Released on this day (10 November 1975): Horses, the groundbreaking debut album by shamanistic high priestess of punk poetry (and the woman described by Salvador Dali as “a gothic crow”), Patti Smith. “I have loved Robert Mapplethorpe ever since I saw his bleak, half-transvestite portrait of Patti Smith, posing like an anorexic Frank Sinatra on her first album, Horses,” Camille Paglia wrote of the iconic record cover. “I think it is one of the greatest pictures ever taken of a woman.”

The Noise
Live Review, with Muck & The Mires & Prime Movers, Church, January 11, 2008
The three-piece (with no bass) My Own Worst Enemy plays Snowflake, my favorite song of theirs, early on, and I question how they will be able to build their set. Steve goes from a sales pitch for their CDs to a "if you dont know me and want a CD, I'll give it to you (free)." They get rocking when they hit their Ramones-like Come On and Steve gets extra aggressive on Hey Hey Sunshine. Then it's Sue's turn to release testosterone in Pay Attention to Me. A.J. grabs the spotlight for the elongated drum intro of Turn It On. They definitely were able to bring the set to a peak, even with Snowflake up front. They end with the Clash's Police on my Back, and though it's typical of original bands to end with a cover, MOWE's own material is more exciting to hear. (T Max)

Live/CD Review, 2008
I saw MY OWN WORST ENEMY at a Nancy Neon show in Boston at the Cantab Lounge. Before they went on, she said to me, "You're really going to like them!" She was right. They are a strong trio of two guitars (no bass) and drums. While the songs on their third CD, Total Action (Pristine Indigo Records, c/o myownworstenemy.net) written by either guitarist (Sue or Steve), most of the vocal focus is on Sue. I remember Steve singing as much as Sue live, and as with her, he does admirable work here. I could throw out descriptive words like indie, garage, folk rock, alternative, and they would all be accurate as influences, but MOWE (as those in the know refer to them) have taken all of that and created something else that works for them. It's hard to pick out a fave song since both Sue and Steve write songs that are memorable with good (non-cheesy) hooks. The CD opens with a powerful drumbeat by AJ. In various parts of the release, AJ also aptly lays down a harmonica. Some of the standouts include "Turn It On", "Green Apple", "Catherine the Waitress", "Drunken Angel", and a strong and sparse cover of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach". (Robert Barry Francos)

Total Action CD Review, July 2008
The guitar/guitar/drum trio My Own Worst Enemy was inspired by Sleater-Kinney to become a bass-less band. But whereas that band was most often a noisy outfit, this group alternates between loud rock and softer folk. Total Action, though always active, moves at various speeds and levels throughout.
You can tell a lot about a group simply by examining the songs they choose to cover. In this case, MOWE takes on works by two of America's best female songwriters. The first is "Drunken Angel," a sad tale about a brilliant, alcoholic Texas musician, penned by Lucinda Williams. The second is "Redondo Beach," by punk-poetess Patti Smith. Each of these tunes features guitarist/vocalist Sue's authoritative vocals.
Nevertheless, MOWE is by no means its own rival when it comes to original material. The peppy "Catherine the Waitress" is particularly memorable for its harmonica part. Guitarist/vocalist Steve also sings some of these songs, and he comes off like a weary psychedelic rocker during the especially mellow "Snowflake". Both singers reveal their softer side via the regretful "Corner of my Eye", which is highlighted by a beautifully twang-y electric guitar solo.
At times, Total Action feels like a spirited garage rock offering. This is especially so with "Come On". The track rides atop handclapped rhythms and loose, but enthusiastic, vocals. Other times, as with "Drunken Angel", alt.country is the label that immediately comes to mind. Oddly enough, however, this group is from Boston, which - while certainly famous for its dirty water – is not especially known for its country music roots.
This band also deserves extra credit for choosing a wonderful name. Isn't it sometimes the case in love and romance where we are our own worst enemies? How many times have we been jealous without cause? And aren't we simply selfish by nature? Thus, this moniker is like the description of us all. While we're quick to point fingers and blame, when things go wrong, more often than not, it's our own darn fault.
My Own Worst Enemy is the sort of group I can easily imagine on stage at Coachella. The act's music appeals to fans of singer/songwriters; albeit, ones with strongly beating rock & roll hearts. The decision to cover both Patti Smith and Lucinda Williams reveals great taste. But, as the old commercial used to say: "Starkist doesn't want tuna with good taste. Starkist wants tuna that tastes good." And with this effort, My Own Worst Enemy shows off great taste while all the while tasting delicious. (Dan MacIntosh)

Total Action CD Review, August 2008
On the latest full-length release from this excellent trio, rumbling toms and drama-building feedback immediately set the stage - you are about to be rocked. The rocking is accomplished without needing a bass guitar, by Steve on guitar wizardry and vocals, Sue on rhythm guitar and sinewy lead vocals and A.J. of the killer drums.
The lead track, "Turn it On" forms a powerful one-two punch with "Used to Be a Fighter," the record's standout second song. Harmonica makes an appearance on Total Action, as does piano, and assorted electronic touches, but this is a guitar record, full of lean, muscular six-string hooks and strong-willed melodies. When the band eases up on the fourth track, another standout, "Green Apple," the result is equally affecting; no matter the tempo, the result is strong without being surly, and honest without being contrived. The honesty of the songs may owe itself to the fact that the band recorded Total Action largely live over three long weekends in Vermont. Recording that way at Pete Weiss's cavernous Verdant Studios, MOWE makes Total Action hang together like a real record rather than a collection of songs.
Much like their music, the band maximizes the effect of its vocals, without doctoring them up, by adding subtle harmonies to Sue's leads, having Steve and Sue alternate verses, and changing up lead vocal duties and arrangements from song to song.
From first song to last, a primitive power-chord rendition of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach," Total Action is true to its title. (Chris Gorham)

Electric Like The Moon CD Review, October 2011
Bad romance, late nights out, the intersection of love and squalor...That's traditionally the stuff of great rock and roll, and it's the territory My Own Worst Enemy inhabits with this album, which makes good on the promise of their last few years of heartfelt live shows. By now they've found a sound that isn't quite garage, or pop, or alt-country or psychedelic, but they can call on all of it when a song demands. And the songwriting is definitely the point here, as Sue and Steve's tunes and lyrics key into the joys and dramas of a life in bohemia. This band knows and loves its Boston roots, covering Tribe's previously-uncoverable "Abort" (one of three outside surprises here) and dedicating "The Kids Don't Care" to a certain keeper of the local flame. Electric Like the Moon doesn't sound like some old-school throwback, but it does take you back to the days when a night in clubland was a true adventure, and the bands didn't mind trying to change your life just a little.

#MusicMonday Review - May 2023
#MusicMonday is the hashtag I've been using for quite a while to share music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check April's review for more music.
Multiple subjects, different genres, yet this month's tracks open up without holding back. Have an honest listen, with a word from the artists themselves. 🎧
Bad Pilot – The sad king & the Singer
We begin this month in Friedrichshain, Germany, with a synth pop hybrid full of drum, bass, and electro beats:
"This song is inspired by one of The Hyperion Cantos' character, The sad king Billy, novel by Dan Simmons that I read during the lock down periods.
The sad king gets bored alone in his Palace while the world is sinking into chaos devoured by a mysterious scourge that spared no one. In love and obsessed with the world of the Arts, he invites his muse and poetess to write and sing songs in a new Babylon that he wants to create with her and 8000 other artists, a world of free spirits without limits to entertainment, without political structure and without police."
The Palava – Comfort Zone
The honeymoon phase it cannot last Just give it two years and it’s in the past I wake from my sleep and I hear your name
The glass is broken and we’re missing a piece Just hold on and follow me We gotta hold tight we can make it work
From York, England, this Indie Rock track let's you channel your broken heart, where you're put in the past, with no signs of going back:
"the song was influenced by the themes of a break up and the feelings that go around clinging onto things you shouldn’t and the feeling of needing to let go but being unable to."
Box Of Kings – Two Timin' Woman
You took all my lovin’, you took all I had You played your part then snuck off to another man
You told me you loved me, said I was your man You’d never ever do me wrong, or so you said
Well, you’d best believe me now, the cat’s out of the bag Your scheming ways are done, too late to make amends
Let's move away from a bad breakup to the Netherlands for some Blues Rock, instrumental interlude included, about trustingly walking into an emotional trap:
"Nothing from personal experience. It’s just a rock song about a deceiving woman. We (the guys in the band) are all happily married. 😁"
Social Station – Secrets to Be Heard
You can be a freak, and I can be a weirdo Take a hit, you can’t quit, look around the corner Push or Pull, empty or full, there is nowhere left Are you talking to me? Well that’s my best DeNiro
From heartbreak, and deception, we travel to Washington, D.C. for a haunting post-punk track that makes you believe. Sink or swim, you have to hold your head high:
"I would say Secrets to Be Heard was a pretty spontaneous track, completed very quickly in the course of a single recording session. The general theme of the song is trying to be comfortable in your own skin, owning up to failings, and just trying to be a better person.
Like many songs on our new album, Secrets to Be Heard is definitely inspired by those trying to be true to themselves and trying to live their best life. I wouldn't say there was one particular experience or person, but a collection of people that I've known personally that unfortunately could not cope with issues of being accepted, mental illness, and substance abuse.
This song is a reflection on those struggles, and imagines if they could have been helped, simply, if their secrets could be heard."
Jared Knapik – Tempered Glass
I blinked just in time to watch it all pass by By in front of me, it's been five years since we're 23 Remember when you said to me, "In five years and we'll be 30"? Is this how you wanted it to happen, or is this just a bad twist?
Now we're 29 and the years are flying by Without much courtesy, just rushing all my memories Remember what you said to me when I told you what you meant to me? Standing out there in the cold, I prayed this life to go slow
We end this month's selection in Granby, CT for an mysterious acoustic track about the concept of time, actions, and consequences:
"I don’t often like to say exactly what songs are about — I think it can detract from listeners’ abilities to extract their own meanings — but I’ll say this:
I like to describe songs as “emotionally autobiographical”. Meaning, maybe there wasn’t an actual car accident like is described in the chorus, but the feeling is real.
The lines in the verses — “Remember when you said to me, ‘In five years and we’ll be thirty’”, and “Now we’re twenty-nine and the years are flying by without much courtesy, just rushing all my memories” — those were real conversations I had with someone about how quickly time seemed to be passing us by. It seemed like as we got older, the times we got to see each other became fewer and farther between; the weeks turned into months, then years."
Listen to them and much more on the complete Playlist:

DEATH AND THE POETESS "SMELLING SALTS" (2021)
Your fav Elizabethan creepers are back! Death and The Poetess's 3rd RPM Challenge tips its chapeau to Weezer's Blue album, among other 1990s ghosts and Pumpkins. "Smelling Salts," a Jane Austen-esque title for a time-traveling mixtape full of Emily Dickinson worthy gallows humor (and a song from one of her poems). This record features some Princess Bride jokes alongside the mythology/archaeology-laden tunes you've come to expect from these cryptorian punks that watch too many history documentaries.
This year's contribution to the tomb-triptych of: Necropolis by the Sea (2019), and Red Skeleton (2020) is "The Tomb-builders' Tombs," a love song about Deir el-Medina, Egypt. "Smelling Salts" the single is about social isolation and the character(s) and spirits one's home might now be inhabited by.
Smelling Salts: Implying one has been unconscious/faint, and one is waking to the liminal space of this record as astral time (restorative psychedelic). / Or perhaps 2020 had you in the doldrums, your own personal non-linear oubliette. We welcome you warmly to - now. Have a whiff, slow exhale, peel yourself off your fainting chaise. Do please re-join the cosmic ball with us.

Chapter Ten: The Round Up
As the officer and his entourage were travelling towards the bar, some of its inhabitants were getting acquainted. They had chosen an extremely lucky time as the group of fairly modern female writers and the ancient Greek women were all present, and had just become aware of the others’ presence.
Sappho and Arete were chatting with beer and observing the coming and goings in the bar. Simone de Beauvoir overheard this and, as would be expected, was rather surprise at hearing this tongue being used conversationally.
“Virginia,” she whispered, leaning close. “Are those two speaking ancient Greek, do you think?”
“Oh, I couldn’t say. I know only a few words.”
“Of course, I remember. You were never offered the institutional schooling, your education was your father’s library... very inspiring.”
“I must say it is a little unnerving that you know such things without me telling you,” giggled Virginia. “I am like an artifact to you.”
“You are Providence, my lady,” smiled Simone, with an exaggerated tip of her head. “You are a miracle. Now, I am certain that those two are speaking Greek - we must go find out who they are. After you, I absolutely refuse to take anything for granted.”
Grabbing Virginia by the hand, Simone led her over to the bar.
“Excuse me. My name is Simone de Beauvoir. Who might you be?” asked Simone, in rusty classicist’s Greek.
Sappho and Arete were extremely surprised at hearing someone speaking their language. The only people they had heard speaking their tongue were Oscar and the three greek men: Achilles, Patroculus and Diogenes.
“Delighted to meet you,” replied Sappho. “My name is Sappho, of Lesbos, and this is the lovely Arete of Cyrene. Your knowledge of our language seems a rare thing in these parts. But you are not Greek. Are you a local?”
Simone was speechless, agape. She shook her head.
“What is it, Simone?” Virginia whispered, noticing her disarray. “Who is she?”
“Sappho,” breathed Simone. And suddenly a wide smile spread like sunlight across her face; she laughed in disbelief. “Sappho of Lesbos.”
Virginia’s eyes widened, and she turned to Sappho in amazement.
“And who are you?” the Greek poetess asked, a smile tugging at her lips.
Virginia looked at her blankly.
“Her name is Virginia,” filled in Simone. “She speaks no Greek.”
Sappho nodded. “And where are you two from?”
Simone, at a loss for a way to describe the concept of France in ancient Greek, paused for a moment. “Gaul,” she said at last. “And…” she glanced at Virginia. “And a nearby island.”
“Oh! You are from an island as well!” Sappho laughed. “We must stay together. To be born on an island is always to risk solitude, don’t you think? Oh - my apologies - I had forgotten you didn’t speak Greek - ” she turned to Simone - “you could translate?”
Simone nodded, and translated what she had understood. Virginia smiled warmly. “Tell her I love her poetry, will you?”
Simone translated, and Sappho smiled. “What year are you from? How far through the years has my work survived?”
Simone did some quick mental arithmetic. “About 2400 years of 365 days, and probably longer.”
Virginia looked at Simone questioningly. Simone quickly translated. “I'm sure her- your- reputation has gone even further than us. I believe some of the women here are from an era after my own, we could investigate.” she suggested.
Virginia looked over the crowd and caught Marsha P. Johnson’s gaze, beckoning her over. Marsha approached curiously.
“Hello Virginia. It still feels really weird talking to you, you died four years before I was born.” she said.
“Well this will seem even more peculiar,” started Virginia excitedly, “Meet Sappho of Lesbos.”
The three women smiled as Marsha’s jaw dropped in amazement. “Really? You mean? Seriously?” Marsha saw Simone translating and understood how they were communicating.  “Well a classical education does help… Can you say hi, and that I… love her work.”
Simone took a little bit more time to explain the situation, “This is Marsha P Johnson. She is far more of a commoner than I am, and younger, but still knows all about you. She fought for,” Simone stalled. Never in her extremely formal education had she learnt how to say gay, homosexual or lesbian. “for the rights of men who love men and women who love women and…” she also didn't have a word for transgender. “Women with men's bodies and men with women's bodies.”
Sappho looked at them in confusion. “How so? How has she fought?”
Simone translated this into English; she and Marsha exchanged a glance.
“Should we tell her about it?” Marsha asked in a whisper. “Stonewall?”
Simone nodded. “I’ll do my best.” She then started with the most accurate retelling that her vocabulary would allow. “An enforcer of law came into a… wine house and arrested her because she would not reveal her genitalia, which I don’t believe correspond to her manner of dressing. She fought back.”
Sappho stared at Simone, then at Marsha, in shock and horror. “An official asked to see... that? And she got arrested when she refused? How terrible has the world become… Please tell me it is not that bad in other lands.”
Simone shook her head, “Other countries would have put her to death.”
Sappho looked like she was going to add something, but at that point the officer burst into the room and it silenced.
“Right, is everyone looking at me? Can you all hear me? I’m looking for anyone hear who thinks they’re in the wrong decade or century. Anyone who feels out of place in this time?”
At this point, Alan Turing, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, Frida Kahlo, Rosa Luxemburg, Virginia Woolf, Simone De Beauvoir, Sappho, Arete and Kristina, as well as Erin and Tina, stepped forward, accompanied by a loose assembly of gangly nineteen-year-olds in classic rock tees too much black eyeliner. Erin and Tina looked at the group and laughed.
“He means people who were born in the wrong decade, you sure that applies to you?” asked Erin.
The teens nodded blandly; Erin shrugged and turned back to Kristina.
“Is this everyone? The ones who don’t speak English - Greeks? Some of you? I think? Is that all under control?” He caught a nod from Simone. “Great. Now, listen, I don’t know how much you’ve already figured out, but there’s some stuff I need to tell you all. I’m gonna need you to cooperate. I’ve arrested four of you already, and that’s enough for me, thank you very much. Is there - are you - is someone translating for whoever needs it?” A second nod from Simone. “Perfect. So. You’ve all just sort of… well, turned up, and it’s all very unexpected, and nobody’s really sure what to do with you. That’s pretty much clear to you all?”
A nod from the assortment of punk-rock teens had Erin laughing as the officer went on.
“You’re probably all pretty disorientated, why don’t we step outside so I can talk about integration. I’ve contacted a job club, and they’ve been very helpful and gotten a large number of offers. I’ll show you everything, and get you registered in the government once we’ve gotten to my office.”
The pile of young adults looked at each other unsure, but tagged along anyway. Most could do with a hand finding a job anyway. Erin glanced back at them, but they still seemed to think they were in the right place, so she shrugged and left them to it.
When the last members of the group had trailed into the police station, the officer sighed, sat down at his desk, and dug out a pile of paperwork.
“Now, I checked this with the mayor and she says the system uses your birthday to identify you and to give you an age so I suggest that you fill it in with the real day and month of your birth, then take your age away from this year - 2017 - and write that down. Other than that, stick to the truth. We’re not sure how this is going to work, but it’s worth a try, right?”
A murmur - “Two thousand-... did you hear that?” - went through the room, but most of the group set to work without much question, too overwhelmed by their new surroundings to question the decision. The modern teens stood around awkwardly, wondering what was going on, but too intrigued to leave just yet.
The officer turned to them after handing out papers to everyone in the room.
“Are you - you all speak English, right? - did you change your clothes since you got here? Where’s all that makeup from? I thought you were all, like, eighteenth-century intellectuals or whatever.”
“What?” asked one of them. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Can you tell me when you were born?”
“I didn’t do anything! You’ve got the wrong guy, officer!”
“Don’t worry,” the officer laughed. “I’m not trying to arrest you. The thing is, for the last couple days, we’ve had a bit of an issue at that bar back there. Some freaky sci-fi time-travel thing -” he stopped, and sighed - “I know I sound like I’m batshit insane, but I swear to God, yesterday I had to arrest William bloody Shakespeare, so I figured I had to do something before it all got way, way out of hand. I guess that’s new information to you?”
The teens nodded.
“We could, like, help, though,” one of them added.
“Can we meet Shakespeare?”
“Are those people in, like, togas - are they, like, actual Greeks?”
“Greece is a country, Harold,” came the sarcastic reply.
“You know what I mean.”
The officer interrupted them. “Hey, I just thought of something. Do any of you have extra beds at home? None of these people have any real money on them, and they’ll need papers before we can find them serious jobs. We can’t afford to keep them all at the motel forever.”
There were a few volunteers. Some knew people who might be able to help. The officer went on: “I’m going to need to check in with you in a couple of days to see how it’s going. How about Saturday? Show up here whenever?”
Erin broke in. “I don’t think we’ll be able to make it for Saturday. Pride is all day long, and I’ve got a space saved for the float I’ve been working on.”
“Oh my god,” cut in Tina. “Oh… my god. Pride. Erin, these people have never been to pride.”
Erin’s eyes lit up. “This is going to be incredible.”
“How’s the float going? Is there still time for some changes? I just had the coolest idea,” Tina gushed. “It’s gonna be the best parade you’ve ever seen.”
“Oh,” Erin laughed, eyes wide with excitement. “Oh, absolutely. I might need some help, but...” she turned to look at Kristina. “I don’t think we’re really lacking volunteers, if you know what I mean. My house at eight tomorrow? We’ll need all the time we have.”
The idea of the project was explained to the roomful of historical figures, along with a quick overview of the concept of pride and a gesture-filled description of a parade float. It didn’t take much to convince them to participate.

“Facebook Memories” reminded me that on this day fourteen years ago … I attended punk poetess Patti Smith’s book-signing at Foyle's at The Southbank in Waterloo. (She was promoting Just Kids, her then-new memoirs about her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe and their early years in New York). I would say she's one of my punk heroes, but Patti Smith is one of everyone's punk heroes! Before the signing started, she sang a few songs accompanying herself on guitar and read a bit from the book. I couldn't actually see her performance as the queue was so long and she was just standing at the front of the store, not elevated on a stage or anything but she was in lacerating voice. As you can see, she agreed to let me take her photo. It was a fleeting encounter, but she exuded charisma and warmth.

Dear kindred spirits, You are linked together spirit to spirit and soul to soul. Two different bodies, two different minds, two different cultures, two different backgrounds yet you are divine complements- soul mates. You are two poetesses who share an alchemical relationship, one in music and the other one in fashion. Patti, sometimes I ask myself which kind of impact an image can provide. Your friend, ex lover Robert Mapplethorpe shot the cover of your first record Horses and changed the life and career of two strangers. Ann Demeulemeester and Patti Smith, you clicked immediately through each other’s work: one through an album cover and the other one through white shirts. You are two fearless women who shaped today’s cultural landscapes. You both share a free spirited approach to life. Patti, you are the punk rock’s only poet, your music was seen as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan. You appear on stage dressed in oversized coat and pegged jean, as if you were embodied in one of those aggressive rock stars. You never made an issue of you gender, in fact by calling yourself an “artist” and not just a “woman”, you had had my day. You never relied on your sex appeal for your success. Ann, you continually evoke serenity and romance with nuances of rock and androgynous elements. You also infuse a seductive awareness of the body by revisiting moments of baroque finery in your collections. Your garments are verses, each layer reveals a soul, and your collections are living poems. One can feel the strength, the sensitivity and the captivity of a fashion poet who live in a darkly romantic world. One can sense the edginess, the rebellion and the sophistication. One can feel the holy words of William Blake and Allen Ginsberg. One can envision Rimbaud’s outfit and the black cravat of Baudelaire in your magical mysterious world. I always felt a connection to both of your worlds. You two empathically reflect the imperfections, the simultaneous strength and fragility of the mankind through your art. I’m writing this letter to thank you for the beauty conception you have brought to our world. Bonne route, Laetitia

THIS IS OUR MUSIC: Romeo Void – “Never Say Never”.
“I might like you better if we slept together.” While its title is “Never Say Never,” Romeo Void’s 1982 single might as well be named after its most distinctive lyric — and, indeed, one of rock’s all-time greatest lines.
Those nine words capture the song’s sexy yet sneering and detached essence, making “Never Say Never” as much of a come-on as it is a put-down. With this song, Romeo Void achieves a deft balancing act, walking the fine line between arty punk poetesses like Patti Smith and the Raincoats and more pop-oriented new wave groups, such as Blondie and the Pretenders.
Though the song’s stark, propulsive rhythm and wailing saxophone are compelling enough on their own, it’s Debora Iyall’s teasing, existential musings — which predated and predicted the aloof yet frank sexuality of early- and mid-’90s artists such as Elastica and Liz Phair — that elevate “Never Say Never” from a mere post-punk relic into a subversive, influential classic.
Even if the band couldn’t follow up on the promise of this single, “Never Say Never” remains one of new wave’s most distinctive and innovative moments.
