Okay but this is actually hillarious. Right wing thugs fighting with the police on remembrance Sunday because the police have surrounded the cenotaph on Suella Braverman's orders because she was "concerned" about the pro Palestine march.
Fascists fighting fascists.

So, on 2022’s transgender day of remembrance, there was a mass shooting at a gay club which hosts drag shows (Colorado’s Q Club), which left 18 injured and 5 dead.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this is the direct result of the stark increase of transphobic and homophobic rhetoric and the demonization of drag queens in recent political campaigns.
Nor do I think it was a stretch to say that this was the desired outcome.

So it’s Remembrance Day.
My brother is in the air cadets, so I showed up to the parade to support him.
Made my own poppy earrings and everything.
Fab so far.
Hm I wonder why that old man is staring at me.
I find my mum, she looks at me in abject horror and starts trying to remove my coat.
What the fuck is going on.
Instead of my regular plain jacket, I’ve picked up my vintage army jacket without realising.
My vintage GERMAN army jacket.
Compete with very visible German flags on both arms
Tumblr media
Ended up stood shivering with the coat folded down over my arms 🙃

Saskatchewan Lt.-Gov. Russ Mirasty received the first poppy of the year at Government House in Regina Thursday, a day after the provincial government announced planned legislation for the symbol of remembrance — which would include ensuring workers are allowed to wear a poppy while on the job.
The throne speech Mirasty read in the legislative assembly Wednesday laid out the government's policy priorities for the fall sitting, including introducing the Saskatchewan Remembrance Day Observance Act. It would prohibit workplace policies that say employees can't wear a poppy at work.

it is possible and normal to acknowledge holocaust remembrance day — an international day of mourning — without making it about israel/palestine AND condemn the actions of israel AND support ending the occupation of palestine
these concepts can and should coexist
if you’re only acknowledging today’s commemoration of all the jewish people who were systematically and industrially murdered as a way of talking about zionism though you might just be antisemitic

Being on the internet on September 11th as a non-American is so wacky. I feel like I skipped school on the one day a massive fight broke out and I’ll never fully be in on what everyone’s talking about because all the posts I see on that day consists of:
25% heartfelt reflections on how on this day [X] amount of years ago, 2996 people in New York City went to work and never came home, and millions more Muslims were killed in the aftermath
25% “I forgor 💀” “They got the Pentagon?! Rats, that was my favourite shape!” “Mariah Carey caused 9/11 with Glitter”
50% “🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸NEVER❌FORGET✈️🏙️💥🤯😢GOD✝️BLESS🙏🏻AMERICA🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸”

“Twenty Injured In Dublin Rioting,” Montreal Star. November 12, 1932. Page 1. ---- Wearing of Armistice Day Poppies Causes Disturbance --- WINDOWS SMASHED ---- Police Restore Order After Evening of Fighting ---- DUBLIN, Irish Free State, Nov 13— (AP)— Twenty persons were nursing injuries in hospitals today as the result of rioting between Irish Republican army men and police on Armistice evening.
The riot began apparently as a protest against the wearing of Armistice Day poppies. The young men went about the downtown sections in military formations singing songs early in the evening.
Later, when they approached Trinity College the police blocked their way and the riot was on. Several store windows displaying poppies were smashed Pedestrians found their lapel poppies matched away and it was midnight before order had been generally restored. Many arrests were made.

So.
Today is Remembrance Day in the UK.
It’s supposed to be a solemn day of remembrance.
Instead it’s become a ghastly war worshipping wankfest where far right demagogues and middle aged mediocrities glorify death and slaughter.
Sickening stuff.

November 8, 2023
Ms Goehring: Given that the UCP has been taken over by the far right who have demanded these resolutions be implemented, or else, and given that this isn’t just far-right conspiracy theories they want implemented; many of them will do real harm to Albertans – these include allowing doctors to prescribe unapproved and untested medication, ending access to harm reduction, and outing transgender kids – is the Premier planning on making government policy by implementing these resolutions from their far-right base that will risk the health and safety of Albertans, including vulnerable children?
Mr. Schow: Mr. Speaker, thank you for the opportunity to rise again. I find it very disappointing that on this week, of all weeks, the member opposite . . . [Disturbance in the gallery]
The Speaker: Order. Order. Order. The hon. the Government House Leader, from the top.
Mr. Schow: Thank you, Mr. Speaker. As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted by, I suspect, someone that was invited by some member opposite, for the second time, I will say that it is disappointing that the military liaison for the members opposite would be asking this question on this of all weeks. This is the week that we prepare for Remembrance Day, where we respect and show gratitude to those who put their lives on the line and served our country very diligently and bravely.

On Trans Day of Remembrance we remember those we have lost, and how much further we have to go.
The hate, discrimination and violence our trans and non-binary communities face today will never be accepted in a free North.
We will always fight for a free North where trans and nonbinary people have full rights, access to healthcare, and protection from discrimination.

sorry for the weird ask and the follow up rn, im just. extremely baffled and experiencing some sort of culture shock. were they the flags of the german empire? or like, regular modern germany? why on earth would that offend anyone? i guess it could be a faux pas to wear the german imperial flag around the families of british ww1 survivors, but uh, come on, not to make this about death tolls but literally ww1 was so much more traumatic to the german soldiers. how do you not feel compassion after 100 years.
maybe its a me problem since i live in a country of which the population got drafted into various armies of opposite sides for ww1, so there is no one side favorised in our historical politics and historiography, but. what the fuck.
Yeah no I get how this is confusing to people who don’t live where I do, especially those in the younger generation.
I live in a small town where the population is a lot older and they have very set views on who were the “goodies and baddies” in the wars. And the baddies to them are always the Germans. Even in regards to ww2 I’ve never spoken to someone who cared about the other Axis countries, but these people fucking HATE Germany.
My coat is a 1960s era khaki jacket with a small modern german flag on either sleeve. This gained me more dirty looks than my funky hair and multiple facial piercings have ever gotten me.
As much as we in the younger generation now understand the nuances of war and who the real victims were, this doesn’t matter to a lot of people in real life. A lot of people don’t use the internet in the way we do, and they don’t have any interest in changing their views on who the aggressors were.
In my area and tbh with a lot of people I’ve met who don’t use the internet a lot, it’s a very simple “Germany bad England good”. No nuance, no conversation.
Also we have a surprising amount of propaganda taught to us in schools without us realising. No one really teaches us about the atrocities we as a nation committed, or about the widespread support for the Nazi party before the holocaust. People cling onto these beliefs very tightly both nationally and in my area specifically.
The truth doesn’t matter, just what people believe, and they believe generally that me wearing my coat accidentally is a personal affront to them and the deceased. 🤷🏼‍♀️
