May, Coulson, and Daisy, and moments from a day or two in the building of a new life. A story for learning to trust that the good things in your life are going to stick around, and for the days when even those good things are still a little bit hard.
May breathed out a long, slow exhale and nudged into park, staring sightlessly out the window. Her phone pinged with a text. Simmons, probably. Checking in. She wouldn’t trade what they had now for this world or any other, but she missed it, sometimes, the bustling base. Always having something to do, defensible walls.
The text was headed hi May. May stared at it for a long moment, keeping her palms wrapped around the steering wheel. She didn’t feel much like May, right then. Melinda, maybe. For once. Just a woman sitting in her car with an aching thigh and a switchblade in her pocket, feeling every single one of her fifty-two years. Exhausted with not doing a damn thing. She hadn't felt this way in so long.
She felt like Agent May, like she would never, ever be able to be anything else.
May shut her eyes hard and then opened them again. She muted the radio and pulled back onto the road, driving steadily towards home.

“Oh shit!” A stack of papers falls to the ground as Daisy’s body bumps right into someone in the middle of the SHIELD headquarters’ hallway.
“I’m so sorry.” The other woman mumbles as she kneels down, starting to gather all the papers from the ground. “I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
“No, it’s my fault,” Daisy picks up the few papers that flew further away.
The woman gives Daisy a small smile as she stands up, now holding all of her papers. She takes a double take, her brows scrunching together. “Aren’t you the Quake?”
“Oh god,” she cringes at the mention of her superhero name, “please call me Daisy. I hate that name.”
“Okay, Daisy. I’m Y/N.” Freeing one of her hands, Y/N reaches it out to shake Daisy’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
It’s not that Daisy doesn’t pay attention to the people working at SHIELD, because she does, she makes sure to be at least polite to everyone (who deserves it), but right now she can’t help but stare at the woman in front of her, taking her in fully. “Uhuh.” She nods, shaking Y/N’s hand softly.
“Okay.” She lets out a small laugh before pulling her hand away from Daisy’s weak grip. “I really have to get going, but I’ll see you around, maybe.” Y/N waits for a couple of seconds before walking away.
“Yeah…” Daisy whispers, her eyes following her until she finally registers reality. “Wait what?” Her eyes widen as a visceral need to get the woman’s number comes over her. She desperately looks around to find the woman, but the sea of people has already hidden her from sight. “Shit.”
Daisy has no choice but to continue her way to Coulson, who called for her at least 30 minutes ago.
“Hey, Daisy?” Coulson’s hand waves in front of her face. “Are you listening to me?”
Daisy sighs, coming out of her dreamland as she focused her gaze on Coulson. “No, sorry AC.”
“What’s going on?”
Leaning her head over the back of the couch, Daisy smiles softly as she reminisces what happened not too long ago. “I bumped into someone, a woman, today. I don’t think I’ve seen her around before, because I’d definitely remember her if I had.”
“Someone finally caught your eye?” Coulson has a small grin on his face as he listens to her talk.
“What do you mean finally?” She scoffs, rolling her eyes before going to explaining. “She was so beautiful and nice, so cute, and I was acting so weird around her.” Daisy lays her hand over her face, a small grimace on it. “But I couldn’t help it! I got completely mesmerized by her.”
Though Coulson wanted to tease her at first, his grin turns into a genuine smile. Daisy hasn’t really paid attention to people after everything that happened with Ward and then Lincoln, so he is truly happy for her.
“I didn’t get her number though.” She mumbles. “But her name is Y/N, do you know her?”
At the mention of her name, Coulson’s brows raise. “Y/N? About yay tall, great hair, smiling all the time?” He gestures with his hands, wanting to make sure they’re thinking about the same person.
“Yeah! So you do know her?”
“Ask her number from May. I’m banner from that duty since I apparently don’t know how to judge a person’s vibes well enough.” He says it as if it’s the moat ridiculous thing he has ever heard, but there’s fondness in his tone.
Daisy furrows her brows, now lifting her head up properly to watch Coulson. “You know her well? May too?”
“Mhm.” He smiles, his arms crossed over his chest. “She is our daughter.”
There is a prolonged silence as Daisy tries to wrap her head around the sentence. “Daughter? You-“ she opens and closes her mouth, her wide eyes stuck on Coulson’s grinning face. “I know you two are together, but long enough to have a whole adult daughter?”
“Very few people know.”
“Why wasn’t I one of those people?”
“Security reasons. Don’t worry, none of the people on the team know.” Coulson takes out his phone, informing May that Daisy is now aware of their daughter.
“But-“ Daisy huffs before shaking her head. “Philinda daughter…” she mumbles.
“Please don’t call her that. May might hurt you.” Coulson pats Daisy’s shoulder. “Do you want her number?”
“Yes! Yes, I want her number.”
“Go get it from May-“ Daisy is already on her feet, “she is getting the bus ready.” And Daisy is gone, leaving Coulson to chuckle by himself.

Something I’ll never get over:
May looking at Coulson as Daisy talks about how happy she is with Sousa. For one, in a “proud parent” type of way- because look at their kid! She’s all grown up!
But also, it’s almost like she’s fantasising about what she could’ve had with Coulson. That the happiness that Daisy and Sousa have is what they could’ve had too, maybe in some other universe.
I shall never get over them, you guys.
Philinda STAY breaking my heart, always and forever.

strength || philinda
Summary: little filler moment between Coulson and a slightly injured May. Set somewhere around the end of season five (spoilers!!) as Coulson is grappling with his impending doom. Inspired by this prompt:
“I’m fine.” “You don’t look fine.” “I can stand. That’s enough.” “You’re leaning against the wall.” “I’m okay.” Person B walks over and hesitantly slides A’s arm over their shoulder. “You don’t need to pretend around me. I’m not going to let you down.” “That didn’t even cross my mind.”“Then why lie?” “I want. I want to be strong for you.” “I already know that you are.” (source)
Warnings: none really, spoilers for season five, a little sad but also sweet.
Words: 1,003

Coulson sat in the disorganised space, trying to find something useful for the next stage of this ridiculous plan. Of all the cockeyed, deluded, unfathomably impossible-
He sighed. When had “impossible” ever stopped them before? He could hear the others shuffling around a few rooms over, taking stock after the latest incident, making sure all limbs were still attached.
The other “impossible” rose up in his mind as he glanced at the makeshift desk and the crumbled paper that lay there, laughing at him. He shook his head. Not the time.
A noise from the doorway brought his attention to a grinning May standing against the frame.
“You look like you’re trying to figure out time travel,” she joked at his clouded expression and he grimaced slightly. She could always read him.
“I’ll leave that to the British divison,” he answered.
An indignant, “I’m Scottish!!!” came from the other room and the two agents shared a silent laugh as May took a faltering step into the room, closing the door behind her.
Coulson eyed her suspiciously. She caught the look, and before he could say anything, she interjected with, "I'm fine, Director. Don’t look at me like that."
He internally questioned how accurate the title was anymore, but didn’t mention it.
“You don't look fine."
"Thanks,” she deadpanned. “I can stand, Phil. That's enough."
"You're leaning against the wall,” he pointed out helpfully.
"Shut up."
Coulson’s head cocked slightly, the concerned amusement evident on his face. He walked over and slid her arm over his shoulders.
He took her weight and said somewhat awkwardly, “You don't need to pretend around me. I'm not going to let you down."
“That’s clearly not the issue here."
"Then why lie?,” he asked as he helped her sit on the crates they’d been using as chairs.
She sighed, her eyes flicking back to the door, confirming that they would not be overheard.
“These kids need us to be strong. I am strong. I don’t break. Not ever. We can’t, you know that. Besides, with everything-“ She cut herself off abruptly, turning her head to study his face. She found it attentive and reluctantly continued, “You’ve had a hard year too. The kids aren’t the only ones I need to be strong for.”
The agent next to her had clearly let his guard down, otherwise his shock would not have been so easily detected.
Coulson was silent for a breath as he processed what May has said. Had he made her feel that way? That she needed to be strong for him? That was so far from his mind, he hadn’t even considered it. He relied on her of course, she was indispensable. They had always held each other together, stolen moments, the occasional drink; but they had both become so distracted lately.
Or, rather, he had become distracted, since apparently she was so clearly aware of what he needed her to be. He spent every waking moment with his impending death gnawing at him as he intentionally drowned it out. He had tried to write goodbyes but they all felt so… hollow. So disingenuous.
What was one to say in such a circumstance? You were always important to me. No. Too stale. And yet “I love you” was something he had not said in a very long time. He did feel it. For Daisy. For FitzSimmons. For his entire team. They were his family. Even Deke had grown on him. But to just say it was awkward, clunky.
And yet, if he let himself admit it, he felt love for the woman stood beside him. He had accepted it far before she had.
But she had married, so he sat back, telling himself that friendship was enough. That working together was at least better than not having her in his life.
And then everything had gone to hell, and they both told themselves that stolen moments were enough.
And now here she was, being strong for him? Proving herself? Or protecting him?
"I already know that you’re strong, May.” His voice was soft, and yet also somehow slightly scolding. What they had went mostly unspoken; never mind how painfully obvious it was to anyone who saw the two of them.
She was smiling slightly, and he could see the plotting behind her eyes. He knew the team was determined not to let him go. He was trying to prepare them, and he he knew that, eventually, they would have to accept it.
But May… May never liked to just accept things.
“What?,” he questioned, a teasing lilt to his voice as he tried to puzzle out what she was thinking.
She shook her head. “Nothing. Never mind. We finish this, properly, then I’ll answer you questions. Okay?”
He held her gaze as he nodded. “I suppose I can live with that.”
“Good,” she nodded with a note of finality which Coulson knew meant they were done talking about it. For now, at least.
As May stood, his hand found her wrist and she froze.
“What happened? Did Simmons check you out?,” he asked, referencing her injury.
She looked bewildered for a moment before remembering that she was, actually, in pain. She waved dismissively.
“It’s nothing.” Coulson made to counter her when she cut him off. “No, Phil, really. Or nothing to be done about it anyway, I’ll find some pain killers.” She had turned around and was gesturing over her shoulder as she confidently marched out the door; albeit with a slight limp. “Nothing broken or-“ Her voice faded as she disappeared down the hall.
Coulson rolled his eyes as he pushed himself off his seat and straightened his shirt. He might be the one dying, but somehow she was the one who never took care of herself. He followed her out, intent on ensuring that she would actually at least let him make sure she wasn’t bleeding or duct-taping herself back together. After all, injured agents were a liability on missions… yes, he told himself, that was why.
No other reason.

AN: hope you enjoyed 😊. It’s a bit random ig but I just thought the prompt fit them too well. I hope it’s not awkward, romance isn’t really my thing haha but I love these two 🤍

Take Care of Her by sunflowerromcom
“I don’t have much time,” the woman said with urgent desperation in her tone that pushed Melinda’s thoughts of masks and HYDRA aside. “You have to listen to me.”
For the slightest second, Melinda’s stance eased. If this wasn’t an imposter wearing a mask, who the hell was she? Why did she look like her? What the hell was going on? Clenching her jaw, she raised her gun back up.
“Why would I do that?”
“Because I have her,” said her double, and Melinda lowered her gaze, watching her doppelgänger unzip her oversized jacket. Melinda’s jaw fell open slightly. There, wrapped against the woman’s chest, was a baby. “I need you to take her before I run out of time.”

20 questions for fic writers
Tagged by the ever lovely @oliviassunrise - thank you friend!!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
521
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
as of today i have posted 1,189,141 words, which makes me feel insane!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
i have written for a lot of them, but the current three are the last of us (tess/joel), the hunger games (haymitch/effie), and fringe (peter/olivia).
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
but home was a dream (one that i'd never seen until you came along) [jopper]
i am still looking (even when i look away) [kate/yelena]
this is home [philinda & philindaisy]
your heart is a masterpiece [melinda & daisy]
how everything still turns to gold [tessjoel]
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
i do!! i'm terrible at it and usually very late but i cherish every single person who leaves me a comment.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
probably confined, where tess is captured by fireflies and has no hope of escape.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
probably my tessjoel summer anthology fic!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not usually? if i do i'll just delete it and move on, tbh.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i do lmao it is a majority of what i write nowadays if i'm being honest?? i did kinktober and had an absolute blast, especially because i wrote some kinks i never had before.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
i have! i've written plenty of marvel crossovers, but the silliest one was wayyyy back in my ncis days- i wrote a jenny shepard/bruce wayne crackship fic, haha.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
i don't think so?? if i do i don't know about it lmao
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
i have not!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
back in my sons of anarchy days i used to rp gemma/clay, does that count?
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
i'm gonna be honest- i don't have one. i love each ship so deeply in the moment that it always feels like the all-time favorite! like right now, it's tessjoel. but two years ago it was jopper. before that, it was philinda. before that, riverdoctor. and so on, and so forth. i just love what i love, man.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Honestly, my maydaisy + avengers au that has sat unfinished since 2017 haha. i had such a great plan for it and then aos broke my heart and i got discouraged. i really should go back to it because melinda + the avengers is my favorite thing.
16. What are your writing strengths?
description. i have a very flowery writing style that lends itself better to descriptive scenes.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
starting too many projects for my pea brain to keep up with
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
i've added bits and pieces of other languages to my fics before and it is always after intense googling, haha.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
NCIS, for my beloved jenny/gibbs <3
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
this is so tough!! i have been writing for nearly half my life now so i've written so much. but i really really loved i lost a part of me out there, a tessjoel time travel au borrowed from one of my favorite tessjoel writer's verses. i think it's some of my favorite writing ever. but also the jopper marriage law fic (my top kudos fic) is my absolute pride and joy.

for the fic writees ask, 49? (im reading a galling yoke so i hope youll talk about the next chapter 😂😂) and also 15 33 and 41 bc im curios
What’s your favourite AU that you’ve written?
My best AUs are for Philinda lol. My favourite is Committed to the Cause, a POTUS/USSS one with Coulson as the president and May as his head of security.
If you write chaptered fics, what’s your ideal chapter length to write? Is it different from your ideal chapter length to read?
My ideal chapter length to write is 4–7k, which is also about my ideal chapter length to read. Maybe my reading ideal is on the shorter end, so more like 3–5k, but gfhjsgdhs that’s not too big a difference.
Link a fic that made you think, “Wow, I want to write like that.”
There are a few that come to mind. The main ones are literally anything by @indilwenofmirkwood (but especially What Makes Her Tick, which can be read here on AO3 and here on FFN) and Kismet by @midnightlovestories (can be read here on AO3) for how they developed plot/romance, analysed my comfort character, and got some whumpy goodness snuck in there. The former is for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. while the latter is for The Addams Family.
Feel for You by @parksanddownton603 (can be read here on AO3) made me fall in love with a specific tone of AU and gave me the motivation to try my hand at writing an AU like they did (also for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). On the flipside, Defensive Wounds by @rebecca-in-blue (can be read here on FFN) is an in-universe fic but I greatly admire the characterisation in it and would love to know and honour my blorbos as well as they do. It’s for NCIS.
Another one for the Addamses, Human by @unhappychildhavingfun (can be read here on AO3) packs the kind of emotional, meaningful punch that I want my writing to throw. Though I also aspire to churn out numerous one-shots that just put my guys in situations the way @suallenparker does (if I must name particulars, the ones that affect me the most in this way have been Bulletproof, Lifeline, Safe and Sound, Liar, Mayism, Second Chances, and Being Someone Else, all for Philinda hfjsgdhhd).
And can’t play dead by @widespindriftgaze (can be read here on AO3) is…simply some of the best creative writing I’ve ever read. I love how they dabble in various, sometimes small/short-lived fandoms; I long to do that.
Welp, that was more than a few.
I hope the authors don’t mind being tagged—I wanted anyone who reads this post to be able to click onto your blog directly, but if you’d rather I not tag you, let me know and I’ll neutralise the ping right away. Sorry!!
(And of course, the one you’ve been waiting for, anon—)
What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!
I am currently working (well, focusing) on A Galling Yoke, my Sherlock Holmes x Reader exes-/friends-to-lovers casefic. (It was actually supposed to be enemies-to-lovers lolol.) I’m like a third or so into Part 12, and I’ve got like seventeen chapters planned total plus an epilogue. Exciting stuff!!
And hey, you want a few lines? >:P
“No.”
“Mr Holmes, I cannot impose—”
“It shall not happen!”
You straightened in your seat, shoulders tensing. Sherlock groaned and dragged a hand down his face.
“I meant not to be…domineering,” he said. “But […] am I not to assume that you came here…for a reason?”
He and you looked at each other for a long, open moment.
I grabbed that out of the middle of a conversation for Maximum Suspense. I cut out […] because what I have written there currently is a bit of a placeholder. There was another part I wanted to share because it’s got a long quote from Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton”, but I figured that excerpt was a tad too spoilery. I’m sure you guys will prefer this romantic tension anyway. ;P
Thank you, and please feel free to send in more!

19. things you said when we were the happiest we ever were - Philinda
"This isn't funny," she said and pouted.
Melinda May pouted. In his kitchen. And it was adorable.
Phil pulled up his shoulders and walked around his kitchen island. "It's a little funny," he said, unable to keep his smile at bay.
She huffed. "It's pathetic!"
Now he laughed. "It's just eggs, Melinda." Their burning scent was what had woken him up and brought him here.
She looked at the mess she had just pulled off the stove. "And the pan, too."
"I'll buy you a new one to ruin."

oo tell us about the "Vulnerable" one?
Vulnerable is my provisional title for my teen!Skye AU fic. It tells the story of Philinda coming together and ultimately fostering Skye. It's about their individual journeys as people, as well as them coming together as the beautiful found family we know and love! Packed full of familiar characters - it touches on some angsty areas, but the aim is to make it as uplifting and fluffy as is possible and appropriate!
Here's a snippet for you:
Skye was curled up, asleep under the blanket. The edge was clenched tightly under a fist, but it did appear her limbs were properly relaxed for the first time in hours. His heart ached as he watched her chest rise and fall. Her dark hair fluttered slightly with each gentle release of breath. She looked so tiny and vulnerable covered up like that. If only there was a way to protect her from the darkness in the world, to ensure she always looked as relaxed as she did in this moment.
Thanks for asking!

Has anyone else thought about the parallels between that line from Goncharov (1973): “If you loved me you wouldn’t have missed” and AoS in terms of lovers sacrificing each other?
Like, in Goncharov it’s used as a tool to emphasize the complicated relationship Katya and Goncharov have and the repressed yet truer love between Andrey and Goncharov, but if you look at it in terms of AoS?
This line fits Philinda especially well, during season 2 when Coulson wanted May to kill him to avoid a worse fate. He told her as much: if you care about me, you have to kill me. And to show him that she loved him, she agreed. If she loved him, she wouldn’t miss. Idk I think about this parallel a lot.

you’re all i think about and everywhere i look (i know it’s bad, but we could be so good)
A.K.A. Philinda as So Good by Halsey
Coulson was everywhere.  He didn’t seem to understand that she couldn’t bear to be seen, that she didn’t want him there.  She told him over and over that he should leave her alone, but day after day he showed up in her cubicle with a box of take out.  If she insinuated that she had work to do, he’d sit with her and grab some files for himself.  If she locked herself in her home, he’d break in.  If he went on a mission, he convinced Maria to fill in for him.  She was much less verbose, choosing to sit in silence as they filled out paperwork together, but she still showed up every time.  The company was constant.
“May?”
She didn’t bother to look up, knowing that it was Coulson on his dinnertime visit.
“I’ve got a bit of a favor to ask,” he said, not sitting down.
She snapped her head up.  He had never once asked her for something since the incident, knowing that he was already toeing the line by being near her every day.  Coulson was tense but projecting a calm demeanor, holding his normal take out container.  Next to him stood a young girl, still in her teens, looking extremely anxious.  It was like she thought May was going to murder her.
“This is Daisy,” Coulson began, ”I’m watching over her for a little bit.  Is it okay if she eats dinner with us?”  His eyes begged her to say yes.  Even after everything that had happened, May had never been able to deny him.  She was tainted now, and she should’ve pushed him away.  She didn’t deserve him and his gentle presence, but she was selfish, deeply selfish, and she couldn’t follow through on her request that he leave her alone.  She wanted him with her.  Always.
May inclined her head at him.  “Clearance level?”
“One,” Coulson said apologetically.
She glared at him.  The files on her desk were Level Five and up, and he knew that.  She would have to eat without the buffer of doing paperwork.  It was most definitely part of his plot.
She jerked her head at Daisy and raised an eyebrow in question.  Babysitting wasn’t normally in his wheelhouse as a senior agent.
“She’s going to be training under me,” he explained.  May stared at him in shock.  Coulson had never taken on another agent before.  She looked Daisy up and down, trying to parse out his reasoning.  There was nothing particularly special about her on an initial inspection, but Coulson had good instincts about people.  He trusted a bit too easily, in May’s opinion, and didn’t judge them enough.  May would have to do that for him, see if this Daisy was good enough.  If she wasn’t going to ruin Coulson, then May would protect her.  Save her from danger.  She couldn’t save the other child, but this one, this one would be safe.
She ate in silence while Coulson and Daisy talked to each other.  Daisy seemed quite curious about Coulson’s old missions, asking him to recount the fun ones.  As he did, May interjected with a series of looks when he was stretching the truth.  Each time, he knew exactly what she meant and quickly corrected his version of the story.  Daisy seemed befuddled by their interaction.  As they walked away after dinner, May caught her asking Coulson how exactly they knew each other.  It was a good question. They didn’t exactly seem like the type to be friends.  May didn’t know how it had happened, just that he was always there for her, as she would be for him.
—————————————-
May had hoped that that dinner had been a one time occurrence, but Daisy showed up the next evening, and the next, and the next.  She was like Coulson, believing in the good in everyone, even in May.
After the fifth dinner, she went to Maria with concerns about being around Daisy.  It was dangerous, she argued.  Look at what happened the last time she was with a child, she said.  Maria sat her down with an unreadable look on her face and reminded her about her time in the military.  How she had been with her team, how they’d missed a bomb, how they died around her, and how she’d hated herself for living when they didn’t.  The only survivor, Maria told her.  You were the one who told me that I had to move on, Maria told her.  That I had to let go, Maria told her.  That the past was done, and only the future remained, Maria told her.  That I could make the rest of my life count, but only if I wanted, if I tried, Maria told her.
“You are not dangerous unless you want to be,” Maria said.  “I trust you with my life.  I trust you with the lives of our agents.  I trust that you know what the right thing is, and I trust that you will do it.  I trust you with Daisy.  Coulson trusts you with Daisy.  It’s hard, Melinda, but you have to move on.”
Maria’s words echoed in her mind the next time Coulson brought Daisy for dinner.  He had been bouncing ideas off them for a couple nights, thinking on who could take on Daisy for physical training.
“I will,” May said, surprising all three of them.  She had vetoed the last seven people he’d brought up for various reasons.  None of them were good enough for Daisy, for Coulson’s prodigy, who she was reluctantly beginning to care for.
“You will?”  Daisy spluttered.  “But, you work here.  With paper stuff.”
“Are you sure?” Coulson asked.  “Just for training?  Do you want to get back out there?  What’s going on, Melinda?”
“I talked to Maria,” May said mysteriously.  “Just training.  Then, we’ll see.”
He eyed her.  It was a bit of an abrupt turn of pace, but Maria’s words had reminded her of what was important.  Protecting.  Protecting Coulson, protecting Daisy, and even protecting Maria.  The best way to do that would be to make sure that Daisy was the finest fighter she could be.
“Okay,” he said, clearly suspicious but willing to let it go.
“She’s the best you’ll get.”  he added to Daisy, then continued to talk about the new girl he had met out in Oregon, Audrey.  She seemed nice.  Untainted, even.  She would be good for Coulson, someone to match his spirit, someone kind, someone gentle.  May only knew violence.
------------------------------
They sorted out a schedule for Daisy, who worked hard to meet May’s demands.  She came by after her first real mission, wanting to celebrate with May.
Daisy trusted her.  It was frightening to think.
A couple months later, Daisy showed up at her apartment door, shaking.  “They let me go, but I can’t, I can’t control it,” she burst out, sinking to her knees.  “I didn’t tell them, I was afraid and I didn’t know where to go.”  The floor trembled.
“What happened?” May said, alarmed.  She pulled Daisy inside quickly.
“I can’t control it,” Daisy repeated, voice shaking.  She dropped onto May’s couch, curling up and clenching her fists.  “I can’t-”
The glass of water May had been drinking started to rattle.  “Daisy,” she said, crouching down to make eye contact.  “What's going on?  Concentrate on the breathing I taught you.  Steady yourself.”
“It’s me,” Daisy said, hyperventilating.  The water glass shattered over the counter, pieces flying everywhere.  “I can’t control it.”
“You can,” May said.  “Listen to me.  You can do this.  Take a deep breath.  I don’t know what’s going on, but you can do this.”
Talking Daisy down took twenty minutes and May could tell that her glasses were probably in pieces in her cupboards.  She put Daisy to rest in her bed, and immediately called Coulson.  He was the first person that she would want there with her.  She trusted him, and so did Daisy.
“Hmm?”  Coulson replied on the second ring, sounding sleepy.  “Mel?”
“What happened on your last mission?” she demanded.  “What happened to Daisy?”
“What?” Coulson said, a lot more alert.  “She got caught in this room and there was an avalanche but medical cleared her.  They said she was fine.  What happened?”
“Come over.  I-,” she hesitated.  “I want-,” she paused again.  “Daisy’s here, and I think she’s going to need you.” she decided on saying.
“On my way,” he replied.
---------------------
Daisy ate with her friends more often than not, and Coulson begged off to call Audrey each night, so May was on her own more for dinner.  The time difference made it that dinner was the only time he could talk to Audrey for longer than a minute, and he seemed so happy with her that May let him go without a word.  She took to going to Maria’s office, reversing their roles from before as Maria was waist deep in paperwork.  Natasha joined them more and more, bringing her own paperwork.  They swapped news, told tales of missions, and plotted the occasional prank.
Coulson was still there, trying to be around her, but they saw less of each other outside of work. He was getting serious with Audrey, it seemed, and she was his priority.
Five months after Natasha had joined them, her dinner partners confronted her.
“You’re in love with him,” Maria told her.
“He’s with Audrey,” she replied, not even bothering to refute the accusation.  They were all master spies, after all.  “Whatever we had before, he’s put it aside. Maybe we could’ve had a life together, but the cards didn’t fall that way. It happens. I’m dealing with it.”
“That can’t be good for you,” Natasha said pointedly.
May shrugged. It wasn’t like she was going to tell him. He was happy with Audrey, and she cared for him. She would put his happiness over hers every time. She regretted that they hadn’t had the chance to try, that she never would, but he was her best friend. He had never given up on her, spent a whole year talking to her with no reply, and she wasn’t going to throw her feelings at him now.
“Mel,” Maria said, but she couldn’t think of anything to add.  They had been prepared to lay out why they thought she was in love: how she smiled when she heard his name, how she let him bother her to an unheard of level, how she looked at him sometimes like she couldn’t contain herself. They were not prepared for this.
“How’s the paperwork?” May gestured at the pile on Maria’s desk, trying to change the subject. “Or, if you want to talk about love, how are you two doing?”
They froze. “What?”  Natasha said lightly, as if she had misheard her.
“Your relationship,” May clarified. She shot them a glance. They were standing right next to each other, hips just touching, like they had some gravitational pull between them, as they had been for the last several weeks. “I have eyes too, you know.”
Maria let out a little laugh. She relaxed into Natasha’s space more. “We’re good,” she said, a smile coming to her face.
They didn’t speak on the subject further, but May could feel their eyes on her whenever Phil was brought up. It was fine. The pain of seeing him find joy in another was worth it, because he was finding joy.  She couldn’t try to jump in between them now.  The chance had passed.
————————————————-
It was near midnight when Maria called her, a year later.  Her voice was filled with joy, and May could see her face in her mind, smiling as wide as she could.
“Nat proposed!”  she said effusively.
May smiled to herself.  It had been a long time coming, and Maria deserved this.
“About time,” she said.  “Congratulations, Maria. I’m happy for you, truly.  You couldn’t have found a better partner for yourself.”
“Will you walk me down the aisle?”  Maria said, as if she hadn’t heard May’s reply.
May paused. “What?”
“Will you walk me down the aisle?”  Maria repeated. “You know that my parents-,” she cut herself off. “You were there for me when I had no one, coming out of the army. You’re the closest thing I have to a-” she paused again, trying to get the point across. “Walk me down the damn aisle, Melinda.”
“It would be an honor,” May said. She had helped Natasha plan out her proposal, but this had not been on the table. It was a pleasant surprise, and helped distract her from the pang that lingered about Phil. She hadn’t seen him in a bit as he was off visiting Audrey, for something important, she recalled.  He would be holding her tight in bed no doubt, whispering in her ear about his love for her.
“May,” Maria cut in, her mind somehow following May’s train of thought. “Are you going to be okay about Coulson?  It’s a lot to hold onto all the time, and you aren’t moving on.”
“Maria, there’s nothing to be done.  I think about him every day, yes, because he texts me all the time.  Like I said before, if he’s happy with her, then I will be happy for him.  I refuse to let this come between us. I can’t let go of him, and I’m willing to carry the pain for the rest of my life.  He’s worth it.”
Maria sighed over the phone. “Okay,” she said in acceptance. “So, want to go shopping with me?”
“Absolutely not,” May replied, and that was that.
——————————————
Phil was still a mystery to her sometimes despite having known him for such a long time. He’d come back from Portland a month ago with a strange mood, both somber and excited.  He seemed to be in an argument with Audrey, not talking to her at all, and was spending all his time with May instead, not that she was complaining about his company.  He was acting differently as well, almost more free with her, more affectionate.
He had nervously asked for them to have a traditional dinner with Daisy that evening.  May was on her toes, looking out for pranks as she entered her own apartment after work, but there was nothing.  She frowned.  His behavior was setting her on edge.
The three of them joked around like they normally did, eating their takeout on the floor in front of the couch, but Phil got more and more nervous as the night went on.  It was like he had a secret that he wanted to share. Maybe, she thought with pain, he had proposed to Audrey.
“Everything okay, Phil?”  she prompted him, in case he had been trying to create a moment to spill the news.
“Hmm?”  he said around a mouthful of noodles. “All good here!”
Daisy snickered.
May twisted to look at her.  “And you?” she questioned. Daisy hadn’t been quite as weird as Phil but she had been acting a little strange lately as well.
Daisy shook her head, shoving food into her mouth to avoid answering.
After she had devoured her food, Daisy left early, whispering something to Phil on her way out before winking at May.
“What is going on, Phil?”  May said with more force behind it. “Why are you acting so strange?”
“Melinda,” he started, turning to face her. “We’ve been friends for a long time.”
That was an odd sentence to start any sort of conversation with.  She nodded at him to continue, hoping to gain some clarity.
“And I’ve been with Audrey for a while.  But, the whole time I was with her, I felt incomplete.”
May raised an eyebrow.
“I would be in Portland, watching her play, and I’d think, Mel plays piano doesn’t she?  She’d make a joke and I’d think, I should tell that one to Mel. I’d go there and come right back because I wanted to see you. I can’t get you off my mind.”  He paused. “I broke up with Audrey last month.  Or, she broke up with me. I’m not sure. It was kind of mutual,” he said sheepishly. “She called me out and told me that I wasn’t invested enough in our relationship, so I thought about it and realized she was right.  You’re more important. When I go to sleep, when I work, anything I do, anywhere I go, I think about you.”  He reached out and grabbed her hand. “So I told her it was over. And now I’m here, with you, and Mel, what I’m trying to say is that you’re all I think about, and everywhere I look, and-“
“I love you,” May told him. He shut up instantly, gaping at her.
“What?”
“Thought that would shut you up,” she said. “You were going in circles.”
He pouted at her. It was absolutely adorable. “Sorry,” she said instinctively. “Continue.”
“What I was trying to say,” he said, straightening up and fixing her with a playful glare, “was that I’m in love with you.  And, that I want to spend the rest of my life eating take out on the floor with you, and that I want to watch you wake up in the morning in a non-creepy way, and that I really want to kiss you, if that’s okay.”
She placed a hand up to his cheek, pulling him in, and he stepped into her space, hands around her waist. The kiss felt like coming home; it was everything she had been wanting for a long time, years in the making. She smiled into it, into him.
“I love you,” May repeated. It was worth saying again, breaking her years of silence, of holding it close to her chest.
“How thrilled is Daisy going to be that Mom and Dad are together?”  she followed up, after a second of contemplation.
“Oh, off the charts,” Phil said with a grin. He rested his forehead against hers, unwilling to let go of her. “She kept telling me that we would be so good together.  I partially confessed just to get her off my case.  We have to be disgustingly affectionate in front of her.  It’ll be so funny.”
