a/n: bruh I just wanna have fun lol and yes the peeling shrimp/perilla leaf debate has been ongoing in some Korean threads. in case you don't know, the peeling shrimp debate is when your friend or a third wheel peels a shrimp for your S/O.

orange peel theory is making it's rounds on local tiktok and twitter. this is my humorous take on how the VOCAL UNIT discuss/deal with the orange peel theory with their significant others.

JEONGHAN

"thank you." she grinned up at him as he placed a plate of oranges in front of her. she had been nose deep in her laptop, trying to complete her last email of the week when he unsolicitedly placed the snack in front of her.

much like all other times he had done when she was far too busy with work to remember to eat.

jeonghan placed a kiss atop her head as she happily munched away on the snack, a sly smile slowly growing on his lips as she grabbed another slice.

"would YOU peel oranges for me?" jeonghan crossed his arms over his chest.

"yes?" his girlfriend was taken back by the sudden hostility.

all while she was preoccupied with her daily zoom meetings and endless emails, jeonghan had brain rotted away on his phone – stumbling upon videos of girls testing their men .... with oranges.

he didn't understand why this was up for debate, knowing he would peel millions of oranges if it meant making his girlfriend's day all the better.

but he also wanted to have fun; setting up his own phone away from her sight as he captured the video just for him to laugh at.

he always did enjoy messing with her.

JOSHUA

joshua sighed for the third time since they had sat on the couch.

which was only about 5 minutes ago.

he glanced over at her to see that she had yet to take notice of the sound he had made, this time letting out a much more dramatic sigh.

giggling, she finally had taken the hint; taking her eyes off the television and looking over at him. "yes, honey, can i help you?"

"everyone else's girlfriends are asking for oranges..." he pouted. "peeled."

joshua wasn't much to keep up with trends, let alone be chronically online the same way his members were. she didn't think he would be well aware of the current debate taking over social media – and frankly, she didn't care for it.

it was just an orange.

"did you want me to ask if you would peel an orange for me?" she asked with raised brows.

"duh..." he nodded. during today's practice, he had overheard seungcheol and mingyu exchange stories of how their significant others had tested them with the theory – the rest of the boys soon joining in. everyone else seemed to have their own share of stories... but him.

"i– it's hypothetical though. it's more of if you're willing to peel–" she watched as he pouted once again. "would you peel an orange for me?"

joshua grinned, digging into his hoodie's front pocket to pull out two oranges, a banana, and an apple.

"apple?"

"i'll use my teeth."

"no!" she cried, grabbing the fruit from him.

JIHOON

"have you guys heard of the orange peel theory?" soonyoung asked, shoveling a spoonful of rice into his mouth.

she and jihoon shook their heads at their unsolicited guest who somehow managed to make himself a little too comfortable in their shared apartment; claiming that before she came along, he was jihoon's babygirl.

she didn't care to fight soonyoung over it; jihoon did enough of that himself.

"isn't that a gym?" jihoon quipped.

"that's orange theory, babe." y/n corrected, grabbing another shrimp from the middle of the table.

soonyoung always came over unannounced, but never empty handed – arriving today with seafood boil for all three of them to share.

"ah..." he nodded, taking the shrimp from y/n's plate – peeling it for her.

she was shit at peeling her own shrimp and jihoon was more than happy to make sure she didn't ruin her perfectly manicured nails.

soonyoung rolled his eyes at the couple who never stayed up to date with the latest internet trends. "sickening." he mumbled.

peeling shrimp was far more romantic than peeling oranges, anyways. but if anyone were to ask jihoon, he'd skin anything she asked him to.

including their unannounced guest.

SEOKMIN

he didn't exactly fail her humorous attempts to test him on the orange peel theory.

but he didn't pass either.

in his defense, she had asked him in the middle of the night – waking him from his slumber to ask if he would peel an orange for her, only to reply "tomorrow."

and he knew she wasn't mad. there was no reason to.

it was a silly tiktok she had seen while she scrolled next to her boyfriend who was deep asleep – practically shaking their walls with his loud snores.

but seokmin felt guilty after he had read the groupchat he had shared with his members, each of them sharing how their significant others had managed to bring up the hot debate topic circulating social media.

if he had known....

"babe... why is our fridge full of peeled oranges?" she laughed. she had originally gone into the kitchen to grab a drink only to be distracted by the lack of bottled waters.... and an abundance of orange filled tupperwares.

"i'm sorry."

glancing over her boyfriend who stood at the doorway of their kitchen, she let out another laugh – walking over to pull him into a hug. "did you peel all those?"

he nodded into her shoulder, making her giggle.

"i didn't take it personally."

"i did." he pulled away, bringing his fingers up to her face. "and now i smell like an orange."

SEUNGKWAN

"look what i brought!" he sang as he kicked off his sneakers, shaking the bag in his hand.

seungkwan had paid his family a visit, coming back from the tiny island just south of the mainland with various treats he enjoyed growing up.

including a bag of tangerines.

"ooooh!" she clapped, following him into the kitchen – digging into the bag of his mom's homecooking. "these are going to be so good. can you–"

before she could even finish her sentence, he had placed a peeled orange on top of one of the containers; a large smile on his face.

"thank you?" she reached for the fruit hesitantly; wary of the strange smile on his face.

"i'd peel oranges for you."

popping a slice in her mouth. "i know... thanks."

"any mundane thing, i'd do."

she nodded, still quite confused with his actions. "i know."

"just getting that out there." he clicked his tongue.

"okay... weirdo." y/n chewed.

seunkwan frowned at her reaction.

"i take it back." he snatched the fruit from her hand.

220513 - - - ♡ eun calls namjoon after watching bts' mbti lab and reminisces the time when namjoon complained about eun peeling shrimp for the members, forgetting that he doesn't eat seafood

a/n why are they so cute and for what?!?? i'm blushing it's not funny because i've been listening to indigo and birthday and sighsfkshdja also i just watched the album film and it gave me a lot of insights on namjoon, imiso excited for the both of them, since it'll be rocky for the next months 😬 sorry not sorry also didn't edit, i was rewatching and thought it was cute how namjoon was okay but when the context changed he was suddenly defensive, especially since he doesn't eat seafood hehehe

He didn't even know the video was uploaded, but exactly 30 minutes after Namjoon's phone rang. Namjoon didn't think less and accepted your phone call. It was normal.

It wasn't until Namjoon heard Eunseo's giggles behind the screen, automatically, his lips twitches in curiosity. "You seem to be having fun, did anything happen?"

As the screen loaded Namjoon greeted her with a bright smile as Eunseo turned the camera towards her face, "Is that why you were sulking on the way home?"

Namjoon raised his brows in confusion, his thoughts contemplating on last week's events if there are things he missed when you two were last together.

"I'm not catching the question love, is there something I did? If so, please tell me."

Namjoon stares at the screen in confusion, but not enough too worry as he sees Eunseo stifling her laughter.

"It's not what you did, it's what I did. Remember when we went out to eat dinner with the members and I peeled shrimp?"

As soon as Eunseo's words hit him, Namjoon became a blushing mess and began to hide his face in the pillows in front of him.

He could hear the sound of laughter making him feel giddy and nervous at the same time, as he slowly remembers the words he said in the debate.

Though most of his statements were edited out by the staff, as the members also reminded him as to what happened, which Eunseo doesn't have to know.

"The members reminded me as well..." Namjoon slowly lifted his head from the pillow, watching Eunseo laugh on his screen.

"I don't like perilla leaf but the shrimp was so funny, when you grumbled about me peeling the members shrimp."

Namjoon groaned underneath his breath, before smiling at the thought of his own actions. Deciding to be smug about it, Namjoon owned up to his feelings during the situation, something he couldn't do back then, from embarrassment.

"Yeah, I was jealous about it, and what?"

Eunseo's laughter ceased as she looked at Namjoon lovingly before smiling at him, "Joon... even though you don't eat shrimp?"

"Even when I don't eat shrimp... Moreso because I don't eat shrimp, it means you're peeling the shrimps for them!" Namjoon confessed the same words he told the members.

Taken aback, Eunseo slowly faced Namjoon and paused the video, curious about his response. "Is there something else you want to say love?"

Eunseo raised her brows as Namjoon shuffled in his seat before looking at her.

"You shouldn't peel their shrimps okay? I will peel them for you whenever we eat, though it would be a waste of shrimp since I'm bad at it, are you willing to let that go at least?"

The call started out as a joke to tease Namjoon yet here he is, professing a vow to peel Eunseo's shrimps everytime she eats them. Though it will be a waste of shrimp, Namjoon can learn.

"I don't know if I'm shocked or happy that you said that, I initially wanted to tease you but why would you make me fall over you again." This time it was Eunseo who hid her face away from the camera.

Namjoon could hear the faint voices of Eunseo's screams muffled by the pillows.

"You're so adorable." Namjoon whispered to himself.

"You can teach me how to peel shrimp, after ten months surely I'll become good at it, so don't peel shrimps anymore okay? I will do it for you, if you want I'll peel the shrimps for the members, I'll do it for you." Namjoon concluded, as he watches her glaring at him.

"I'm sure it'll take time, so why don't we start practicing now?" Eunseo replies, catching Namjoon off guard.

"Is this you way of asking me out on a date? Jung Eunseo, you've gotten so smooth at this, asking me on a date casually. But I agree, the faster I learn, by the next dinner the members have planned with us together, I may have learned a thing or two." Namjoon purses his lips in thought, thinking it's a great idea to start now.

"It's a date then! Why don't you order in various shrimp and I'll come over there and teach you." Eunseo stood up excitedly as she ran to her closet.

"I'll give you time to prepare love, see you later!" Namjoon spoke as he stood up, gathering to prepare for a spontaneous shrimp date.

"Make sure you order something for yourself, it would be unfair if only I get to eat the shrimp we'll peel. I love you." Eunseo pressed her lips into a kiss as she waved goodbye.

"I love you too. Please take care on your way here, don't use your phone when you're driving, love." Namjoon reminds her before ending the call simultaneously.

Standing alone in his own apartment, Namjoon smiles to himself, before sending a message to the group chat.

Ah Kook-ah What do I do with you?

I instantly thought of what Yoongi said during the perilla leaf debate: "If they can't even peel a shrimp by themselves, then they don't deserve to eat shrimp" 😂. Anyway, it's fine if Jungkook does things like that for Tae because they're already in love 😌 (although I'm pretty sure that's lobster 👀)

But if we ever see taekook peeling perilla leaves for each other I'm going to lose it. I'm going to assume they're getting married if that ever happens.

Traces: Magic wedding leaf

aka the perilla leaf fight

I've having too much fun making Traces posts :D There's a dozen drafts lined up now because Jinkook is always on record and there are so many pieces to the same puzzles. I especially love the continuity over days, weeks, months and even years. I still remember last year when I declared wanting to write and analyze Jinkook but it's actually impossible to do so because everything is in their content already. There's not much room left for inferences. Maybe I'll still work on that one post about the history of shipping since these days, it looks like most shippers are at most 2-3 years into the fandom. There are some things you just have to be there realtime to know what it was like :/

Who knew this quarrel could have such a long continuity?

I'm cackling every time I think of Jk's pout during the debate, and even more now that they've shown the Busan concert episode.

But seriously Bighit, we get ok. Stop exposing them.

This debate is so hot in the fandom there shouldn't be a single person left who doesn't know about it. The controversy level is even higher than the [mint choco ice cream] debate.

The question is: are you ok with your partner peeling a perilla leaf for a friend?

The reason why it's a debate is because perilla leaves are notoriously hard to peel apart, very thin and tend to stick together as layers. It could be considered an intimate gesture peeling the leaf for someone.

Jk's stance: absolutely no. What if they end up getting married? Also, no peeling shrimp either.

Jin's stance: married??? There's nothing wrong with helping out a friend. I'll peel shrimp, cut fish if it benefits the mass.

It's also hilarious that Jk had clear distinctions. He stated that scooping noodles or soup is fine. So when Jin indignantly asked, "Why? Why not the perilla leaf?" Jk finally burst out that peeling a perilla leaf can lead to hand holding, then eye contact, then marriage.

Watch the clip for the audio to understand how heated (loud) the argument got. And it's pretty clear Jk and Jin were arguing as two different parties in the same relationship...Jk the one watching and Jin the one peeling for their imaginary friend.

And for people who still believe the members haven't dated since debut or aren't in ongoing relationships, maybe take note of the few who had strong opinions during the debate (esp. the ones who insisted 'they didn't care').

Ignore the important message of this festa and just focus on their petty conversation and dinner table manners.

So the MBTI lab video was released a week before this filming, and Jin likely watched it because he brought it up after offering to peel king crab for the members.

Jin: "I think we can just use one set of hands to do the work"

BTW I rewatched the first part of the video (armys know why) and saw how these two naturally ate off each other's plates, helped to cut/reach for food etc. For example, Jin nudged JK to get the plate of noodles, were out of frame when picking up the noodles but once done, the noodles were on Jk's plate instead of Jin's and Jin was constantly eating off Jk's plate afterwards. Domestic, cute.

The happy ending:

This almost seems like it was shown on purpose. (BH I see you) They didn't have to expose Jinkook like that.

On rehearsal day 2, Jinkook sat down to eat together and Jin picked up a sesame leaf for Jk.

I'm curious who brought over the plate of perilla leaves because that wasn't there when Jin was eating nor when Jk sat down with the two bowls in front of him.

Overall, amicableness and good vibes all around.

Also perilla leaf goes surprisingly well with cream-based pasta. I had a period when I was obsessed with the combo.

The epilogue:

V and Jk weren't eating the pizza because they were on a diet and to tease V, Jin handed him the pizza crust which he normally doesn't eat.

But notice how Jin and Jk were about to start bickering again because of opposite views, RM, Suga and Jimin stepped in before it could get heated? Subsequently, Jimin remembered the perilla leaf debate from months ago, and blurted out his question.

Look at Jin: eyes down, mouth closed, concentrating on his pickle as if he wasn't at the heart of the debate last season.

This happened after the Busan concert and notice neither of the two protagonists volunteered new information on their truce? Instead of pretending like the topic didn't concern him, Jin could've easily chimed in, "I only peel perilla leaves for Jk now."

Have you ever felt, looking at taekook content, they were jealous? I don't assume them to be jealous all the time one partner touches someone else but I feel there are some moments which are too obvious.

Lmao I mean we’ve all seen the perilla leaf debate right??

In fairness, I do think we sort of collectively, as a fandom, conflate the concepts of feeling possessive with being jealous.  I think it’s pretty clear that whether they’re together or not, Taehyung and Jungkook are fairly possessive people.  Even before the perilla leaf/shrimp peeling stuff came out (seriously I just find that whole thing so funny), they both make a lot of claiming gestures, toward each other but also toward other people they’re close to as well (although, I would argue, mostly toward each other), and they act with a lot of entitlement toward each other’s things: their bodies, their food, their prizes, their attention.

I don’t think we’ve seen any indication that this is to a harmful extent.  They seem to both be into it, so if they are together, then power to them.  As long as they’re not holding each other back, but just do it because they enjoy that element of their relationship, then I think it’s not doing any harm.

As for actual, legitimate jealousy, I do think there have been a handful of instances where we’ve seen it, or at least where we’ve seen what seems to be jealousy.  Like you said, I seriously can’t imagine they feel jealous even a fraction of the time that some people say are “jealousy moments,” because that would be ridiculous.  But, for example, the time Bogum came to one of their concerts, I think jealousy is the most logical reason for Jungkook to have been acting like such a little shit lmao (that or he has some other problem with Bogum that is related to Taehyung somehow).  Or the time when they were onstage with a bunch of other idols and someone was talking to Jungkook and sort of got in between JK and Taehyung -- I mean, Taehyung looked pissed in an extremely charged way, I have a hard time seeing that as anything else.

I think a lot of what people see as jealousy is likely them reacting to their situation, how everyone else gets to be all over each other, as loving and affectionate as they want, while Taehyung and Jungkook have to be much more circumspect lest anyone get suspicious.  That’s just a guess though.

Whatever they’ve got going, they seem to be really happy with it.  I was talking to a real life friend earlier, someone who doesn’t ship at all in any capacity and whose biases are Hobi and Tae, and even she said that Jungkook has seemed especially happy and at peace to her lately, since Vegas.  It made me really happy to hear that idea validated even by someone who sees things so differently than I do.  (And it fits well with what I was talking about earlier, how to me, it seems like Taehyung and Jungkook both are really ready for these new moves and next steps.)

This could have gone in the comments, but since it's here, I'm now all curious about how the two are different. I've been avoiding this debate with Kev and X but I think... it's TIME. It was kinda all the exact same conversation with two different kinds of food. One that touches chopsticks (an extension of the fingers, in Korea) and one that is fingers proper. Both involve paying attention to and assisting someone who isn't their partner with something that's about to go in the mouth. Maybe it has to do with the fingers getting gross while peeling the shrimp, and the time it takes. Thoughts?
