Fic Rec Friday - #24
Intro post | tag
Rec #24: maybe poggers can be our always - Ironicspoon Fandom: Haikyuu!! Rating: G Pairing: Hinata Shouyou/Kageyama Tobio Word count: 81,468 (24/27 chapters) Summary (copied from fic): "Maybe poggers can be our always," Hinata says in the most serious voice Tobio has ever heard from him, and he can't help the loud groan he lets out. Hinata giggles. "You're so dumb," Tobio says, glancing at chat. "No, chat, we are not e-dating!" - Kageyama Tobio - streamer, influencer, a little too cracked at Valorant - has a big problem. His online best friend is hot. Between managing sponsorships, merch drops, mild Twitter drama, the looming promise of a face reveal, and shippers flanking him from all sides, he has a lot to handle. But if MilkBoxBoy Kags is anything, it's stupid. And like the dumbass he is, he falls for him. Hook, line, and sinker. Other notes: it's so hecking good idk what else to tell you. anything else you might need to know is in the tags so just read those and then read it

how i think different hq couples get engaged
kageyama and hinata are dating and living together for over a decade before they get engaged. there's just always something more pressing going on - usually their pro-volleyball careers - and they're both just so content with how their relationship is, marriage just seems kind of like an unnecessary hassle and a logistical nightmare that neither of them want to deal with. once they reach their 30s though, and they've both settled a bit more into their careers, i can see one of them casually proposing one day - they don't even have rings - because at this point, they both know they are going to spend the rest of their lives together, why not make mrs. hinata happy and make it official. plus, a wedding is an excuse to get together with all their friends again. when they buy their rings, they buy chains at the same time so they can still wear their rings on the court.
tsukishima and yamaguchi get engaged a lot earlier than kghn, i think they get engaged a year after they both graduate from undergrad. tsukki bought yams' engagement ring in their second year at uni after saving up basically since they got together in high school, but he waited to propose until after they lived and worked "in the real world," just in case yamaguchi found someone better or if their relationship changed when they didn't have school as an excuse to see each other all the time (kei eventually admits this to tadashi years down the line and tadashi scolds him - the efficacy being undercut by the kisses he gives kei at the same time - for ever thinking their relationship was so fragile). obviously yamaguchi was over the moon when tsukki proposed, and takes to calling him "his fiance" at every chance he gets. they wait to actually have a wedding until after tsukki has finished his masters, and they've both started working, so that they can actually enjoy the event with as little stress as possible
iwaizumi and oikawa get engaged around their mid-20s as well. i think oikawa is the kind of person that has had their whole life planned out in a scrapbook since they were 10, and he knows exactly when and how he planned to propose to iwa, so when iwaizumi beat him to the punch - an evening complete with a romantic dinner in a jazz cafe that iwa scouted for the occasion, roses, and a walk to the playground where they first met where upon iwa finally got down on one knee - tooru was so shocked and generally overcome with emotion that he burst into tears and forgot to say yes until hours later, when iwaizumi asked him again after many kisses and sweet words. ofc, after the shock has worn off, Oikawa Tooru's Dream Wedding Plans are back on, and iwa lets him take over planning the most elaborate and expensive wedding japan has ever seen
(for my bkak headcanon see this post i made a few days ago lol)

like yes the angst premises of kagehina losing touch with each other and rekindling their relationship like 10 years later are amazing but i just can’t imagine that ever happening to them like they are literally hot glued together imo

I'm still thinking about bllk's latest episodes, but now in relation to bachisagi. My first instinct when Bachira said "goodbye" to Isagi as a soccer partner was "oh no I do NOT like that why are you saying this Bachi NOOO." However, on second thought I've seen this before. This is literally kagehina learning to fight individually all over again. In fact, this is the best thing to happen in order for them to move forward together as equals.
In the first part of second selection, Isagi learns that he doesn't need to depend on Bachira's passes to score. Subsequently, he delivers one of my favorite bachisagi lines which I mention here. However, at that point Bachira was still looking towards Isagi as his ideal soccer partner. This creates a sort of mental dependency between them that goes beyond teammates, and long-term I think that would make any relationship between them unsustainable. But now that Bachira has decided to play in his own style and remember that he's playing soccer for himself and his own joy, that unhealthy dependency disappears. It means that instead of "needing" each other, it becomes "wanting", which in my opinion is far more powerful.
It also doesn't mean that Bachira will no longer enjoy playing with Isagi - in fact, I think the opposite will happen. Once Bachira develops his own skills and Isagi continues evolving, their partnership on the field will become even more amazing. I'm so excited to see Bachira come into his own even more than before and I hope we get to see Isagi and the others acknowledge that.
In conclusion, we stan a healthy relationship dynamic <3

Ushijima-Oikawa parallels with Kageyama-Hinata
To me, Ushijima and Oikawa are like a tragic parallel to Hinata and Kageyama. If Oikawa had gone to Shiratorizawa then he and Ushijima could've had the partnership that Kagehina had. But because he didn't, they will never know what it's like to make the other feel invincible.
Shipping goggles aside, the parallels have to be intentional (haikyuu is too well-written for it to be just a coincidence): Both Ushijima and Kageyama were framed as naturally gifted volleyball monsters. Meanwhile Oikawa and Hinata believed that they were just average (even though the people around them know that they have their own strengths). Ushijima was the one who kept winning against Oikawa, just like how Kageyama was always ahead of Hinata. Both Hinata and Oikawa went abroad to gain experience so they could finally beat their rival. Ushijima and Kageyama are both awkward, intimidating, and ASD-coded while Hinata and Oikawa are framed as easy-going extroverted chatterboxes. These pairs are literally so similar it's crazy. Look at them and tell me it's not intentional
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also makes sense when you consider that their playstyles are also complementary. Kageyama and Hinata were a good match for each other because Hinata needed Kageyama's precision and Kageyama needed someone agile to match his own speed. But Ushijima's only requirement is for the ball to be set high and the right distance from the net so it's easy to hit. And which setter is known for dedicating themselves to their spikers, giving them easy sets? Oikawa. They truly could've been a terrifying duo.
I think Furudate was trying to show what Kageyama and Hinata could've been if they didn't team up. They'd still be strong, sure, but not invincible like they were in Karasuno. (as opposed to the Miya twins, who were supposed to show what they could've been like if they had an equal from the very beginning)
But in the end it all worked out for everyone! They all got to play on the world stage together. Ushijima and Oikawa even had their reconciliation at the all stars match (still waiting on the Oikawa-Kageyama reconciliation please please please 👀). They're all happy so I suppose it isn't actually tragic. I just cant help but wonder what could have been if Ushijima and Oikawa learned what it's like to be each other's greatest ally. Hinata and Kageyama were so lucky to have found each other after all.

pre-relationship bullshit haikyuu teams probably had to put up with before various ships managed to get their shit together
daisuga probably was really annoying with like small/petty jealousy, like a girl would hit on one of them and the other would be standing behind their back making faces about it and mocking it and everyone else on the team just has to put up with it. and then theyre all overly sweet to each other to make up for the petty jealousy or some odd version of "winning them back" after the flirting event and the team is rolling their eyes *so hard*
i think asanoya is so annoying bc nobody can convince Asahi that Noya likes him. Like full stop. Eventually someone pulls him aside and is point blank like "Noya said he has a crush on you ask him out" and Asahi is just like: "Haha he was probably joking" and just leaves the scene. Like the absolute refusal to believe it from Asahi combined with Noya's classic teen boy inability to be sincere means that even after theyve both been told they somehow still havent gotten together??? how long is this going to take???
tsukkiyama probably ruins everyone's week the week before they get together bc one of them *saw* a confession letter stuck into the other's bag and absolutely went (emotionally) off the rails for the days leading up to them discovering it was for them.
I am fully of the camp that iwaoi start dating before they label it/make it official so the whole team is screaming like "PLEASE HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT IT" meanwhile Oikawa is saying "we just went on a few dates and kissed a few times it doesnt mean anything" and Iwa is in the background shouting "yeah I dont wanna be anyone's boyfriend that's lame" and then they wander off to go eat dinner together holding hands and the team is left in frustration because ALL they talk about is how theyre *not* in a relationship.
for bokuaka its mostly just Bokuto pestering every goddamn person he knows for like 4 months asking "do you think Akaashi likes me?" or "do you think he'd say yes if I asked him out?" and then one day making Konoha *snap* when he says "I need to tell you a secret" and the secret is that he has a crush on Akaashi as if nobody had known that
with ushiten I imagine Tendou was probably really obvious with his crush/interest but in like a very casual "not taking myself too seriously" kind of way so he's comfortable openly flirting, and Ushijima, against everyone's expectations, doesnt seem to mind the attention but is still who he is, so the whole team just has to put up with the most INSANE interactions. Like Tendou walks into the locker room and cat calls him and Ushijima just replies with a formal "thank you" and Semi is contemplating slamming his head in a locker. There's like 12 months of this.
okay okay but I think arankita is *very classic* in that Aran compensates for his crush by over-supporting Kita. so like the whole team gets super annoyed bc Aran wont risk disagreeing with him, is always offering to do extra work, is generally just sucking-up really badly and the twins suffer the most for this bc Aran used to just ignore their antics but now he's super annoyingly on them all the time to try and impress Kita
kuroken is a little different. Yaku asks Kuroo every single day if he's asked Kenma out yet. Lev asks Kenma if he has a crush on Kuroo every chance he gets. Fukunaga gives them a wink when they leave practice to walk home together. This is the only pairing in which the team is the irritant pre-relationship and then post-relationship everyone loses interest and moves on.
I'd include kagehina but once again the entire goddamn show is everyone putting up with them flirting so whats the point.

it would be hard to quantify but i think it would be interesting to do some sort of study on trends in ship groupings, like if you ship Pairing A you are 70% more likely to also ship Pairing Y and if you ship Pairing B you are 90% more likely to ship Pairing Z. like it probably can be explained just in terms of certain dynamics appealing to certain people, but sometimes i'll notice an unmistakable correlation between two ships that on the surface really shouldn't be correlated together. idk how you would go about even testing this but if someone is doing a degree in fandom studies and has any ideas... hmu pls lol

reading established kagehina in the background in a fic with another primary pairing always gives an extra little kick to the main couple's pining because ah yes these morons, these volleyball-brained idiots, dumb and dumberer...THEY got their shit together before you did

People who dislike kghn occasionally point to how Hinata's desire to stand separately from Kageyama can/does/does cause a rift in their relationship and it's an interesting point and hella valid point considering that one of kghn's biggest fights is when Hinata wants to do more on his own (need Kageyama a bit less) and also how Hinata literally travels halfway across the world in part to establish himself away from the shadow of Kageyama's immense talent. There is so much potential in exploring both of their feelings on how every compliment aimed in Hinata's way is followed by 'but it's all thanks to Kageyama' ("As long as I'm here, you're invincible", anyone?) especially during the Brazil years where it's implied that they didn't even meet when Kageyama came for the 2016 Olympics (unsurprising, really but I have SO many feelings).
But the people who usually bring this topic up tend to center this around “and that’s why Hinata would ditch Kageyama to be romantically involved with *insert setter here* which I think is a pretty big disservice to Hinata and the worst possible reading of kghn’s dynamic. First of all, anyone who reads Haikyuu!! and thinks Hinata Shoyo is the type of guy that would resent Kageyama for overshadowing him needs to reread his every interaction with Hoshiumi and Asahi (both of whom he envies) along with his training camp convo with Hyakuzawa. Like he freely admits that Kageyama is the reason for his on-court prowess, his very first words in the series are about how he knows he can never overcome the wall in front of him alone. Secondly, if Kageyama really was just the face of his insecurities, Hinata could’ve just...ditched him (for lack of a better word) after the jackadlers match where he established himself as a vb menace, beat Kageyama and fulfilled his promise in one fell swoop instead of nonverbally dedicating himself to another lifetime with the guy (i have a lot of words about the last panel of hq)
anyways, this is the fifth time i’ve written this post and i don’t remember anymore where i was going with it so imma just say that we need more kageyama pov fics about this topic

okay so you know when takeda manages to get ukai to come watch karasuno play for the first time and kagehina show off their freak quick and ukai is like "sensei how long have those two been paired together" and takeda is like "oh kageyama and hinata? they just met this year i've heard it was rocky at first but they're getting along well now" and ukai is like "what a shame". do you think he goes home and looks into them and finds out that kageyama's the lonely king and that his teammates abandoned him. do you think he looks and looks for hinata but can't find him until finally he stumbles across a no-name school that barely had a volleyball team and their only match lasted 31 minutes. do you think he wonders about how lonely they were. a coach can't replace teammates but do you think he decides to try and make sure that no one on his team feels lonely again.
