No, Pac-Kong isn't a clever mix of Pac-Man and Donkey Kong; it stands as one of the worst rip-offs of the latter that I've ever played, by a considerable margin. Even after all these years, the meaning behind the "pac" in the title remains a mystery to me. While forgiving the simplistic graphics — expected for an Atari 2600 game, the console's charm lays in its titles' gameplay, not in their visual appeal - the evident deficiencies in this game are inexcusable..
At the apex of the tower lurks an Octopus (though it resembles more a giant yellow bat) hurling bananas (or bat-like creatures) at our hero. Dodging these bats or airborne bananas presents a challenge; they never cease movement and sway in a manner that makes you struggle to discern when you've been hit until you lose a life - The feeling of "it wasn't even close" prevails often.
The most infuriating aspect emerges when jumping between platforms separated by gaping chasms. Precise timing is imperative; pressing the button when our hero's last foot grazes the platform's edge is the only way forward. It's an exasperating exercise, leading to countless instances where apparent success is swiftly followed by a plummet to failure.
Somehow, I managed to clear the first loop (just two stages) without any deaths, but the sheer frustration led me to opt-out. Continuing seemed pointless unless I was seeking a nervous breakdown.

The source of the video game bleeps and bloops in media
Tumblr media
Have you ever wondered what the source of those specific video game bleeps and bloops were from? Odds are if a show or movie had a character play a video game or if a scene takes place in an arcade than it's very likely that it uses the same distinct sound effects that originally were sourced from the Atari VCS (2600) ports of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. These ports are already historically important with Donkey Kong being one of the few Nintendo games to be released on non-Nintendo hardware and Pac-Man being one of the most anticipated releases for Atari at the time. Today these ports are often mocked for how butchered they are to the arcade originals but at the time these were fine ways to experience these arcade games at home.
Tumblr media
So why are the sounds from these arcade ports used so often in media? You can pretty much thank the widespread use of a particular sound effect library and in this case the Series 1000 Sound Effects Library which initially released on tape in 1979 and released on CD in 1983. A good chunk of this library contains the same sounds found on another sound library called the Network Sound Effects Library.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Series 1000 library however includes audio recordings of gameplay from these Atari games. Ever since then, these sounds have been used for many years and continues to be used to this very day. Before I showcase some examples of media using these sounds I would like to present the recordings from these games. The following is sourced from the Series 1000 Sound Effects Library which feature sound effects from Atari arcade ports.
If you're familiar with these ports than you can make out the specific sound effects present from these recordings. The distinct walking and jumping sounds in Donkey Kong and the dots being eaten and game over sounds from Pac-Man are the more identifiable sounds you hear. With this in mind here are a handful of examples of these sounds being used in media.
(Note: Due to Tumblr restricting one video per post I have compiled all the example clips in a single video so feel free to read below for the specific sound bytes used whilst the video plays.)
Arthur (1996)
The season 1 episode "Arthur Accused!" has Buster investigating an arcade which features sounds from Pac-Man as it eats ghosts and a faint sound of Pac-Man dying from a ghost.
Drake & Josh (2004)
The season 2 episode "The Bet" has Josh playing your typical video game but features several seconds of audio from Donkey Kong. Weirdly music from the Nintendo NES version of Tetris (Type-A specifically) can be heard when Josh is playing on his "handheld" which is clearly a red Game Boy Advance SP.
SpongeBob SquarePants (2007)
The season 5 episode "Atlantis SquarePantis" features a segment of Sandy in a retro inspired environment. The puzzle game segment features various cut up sound bytes from Donkey Kong including jumping over barrels and the walking sounds.
Chowder (2008)
The season 1 episode "Sniffleball" features a brief sound effect from Donkey Kong of Mario jumping over a barrel. (also what is this retro nonsense?)
Ted (2024)
The season 1 episode "Just Say Yes" features Ted and John playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES. For whatever reason no footage of the game is shown and the audio used is from, you guessed it those Atari games. Donkey Kong sound effects can be heard while brief snippets of Pac-Man can also be heard mixed in.
I could keep going but you get the idea. There are plenty of other examples you can find and I highly recommend checking out the Sound Effects Wiki if you're curious to see what other examples are out there. Linked below are the articles for the other sources for these Atari recordings.
Sound Ideas, ARCADE, VIDEO GAME - VIDEO GAME: ELECTRONIC SOUNDS, AMUSEMENT PARK, FAIR 01 Sound Ideas, ARCADE, VIDEO GAME - VIDEO GAME: ELECTRONIC SOUNDS, AMUSEMENT PARK, FAIR 02
I guarantee most folks nowadays aren't even aware that these sounds are from actual Atari games cause out of context they sound like generic bleeps and bloops. That's probably why it's so common to hear these sounds in media as unless you're a nerd like myself this is something you're likely not going to think about and I'd imagine the folks working with audio aren't gonna stop and think about where particular sounds come from outside of the library they're featured in.

Fighter #06 - Kirby
Tumblr media
- Little Mac introduced him to Naruto and now he's a big fan of it. His favorite character is Kakashi Hatake.
- Kirby loves to cosplay! He often makes cosplays of the other fighters. It's not in a creepy way, it's just that he admires them and their unique abilities. Getting a wig is easy enough, since all he has to do is inhale them, but the clothes can be difficult because Kirby's body is so round. Cosplay Pikachu often helps him out and gives him tips.
- He likes painting rocks in his free time. To help earn funds for the mansion, he'll go back to Dreamland and sell them to the locals.
- He's a master of croquet, but somehow terrible at golf. If that wasn't bad enough, he only gets worse when playing Wii Golf.
- Cloud and Link are his idols. He'll hang out with them every chance he gets.
- Kirby's Ultra Sword is the biggest sword in Smash. Unfortunately, this has caused Sephiroth to hate him.
- Kirby is always the first fighter to greet new additions to the roster. No matter who they are or where they came from, he's always super excited to meet them.
- Despite his spherical stature, he's an amazing ballerina. He has a tutu that's pink, just like him.
- Kirby is one of the backup dancers for the Squid Sisters.
- He's a firm believer in giving second chances. He doesn't give a flying flea that the villains tried to kill him, everyone deserves a fresh start in his eyes.
- He loves to read fantasy novels. In his room, there's a giant bookshelf filled with tales about fairies, dragons, unicorns, and other mythological creatures. Speaking of which, he loves reading about Greek and Norse mythology. He finds it really interesting.
- Kirby can inflate anything in three seconds. If the Smash Bros are at the beach and the beach ball is going flat, he can refill it in no time. That being said, if the beach balls are forgotten, Kirby will NOT allow anyone to use him instead. That's just disrespectful.
- Terry introduced him to Earth music and now he can't stop listening to it. He loves k-pop and 80s music the most. His playlist is forty hours long and it keeps growing longer. Kirby wants to expand his horizons as much as possible, so he'll gladly take song recommendations, no matter what genre it is. In fact, that's how he figured out that he was a big Mastodon fan.
- He's really good at Just Dance.
- Kirby is a sweetheart, but his monstrous appetite can be really tough to deal with. Combined with the appetites of Pac-Man, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, King K. Rool, and King Dedede, it's a complete nightmare for whoever's making food that day. These devious fighters need to have at least three servings for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner.
- One time, the roster held a potluck to celebrate the fact that they were all still alive, and the hungry seven were allowed to have four servings instead of their usual three, which was a big mistake. The only thing left over was a single piece of chicken, and the following day, the seven of them fought over who would get to eat it. First, they argued with each other, then it became an all-out brawl. Of course, Kirby ended up winning. To commemorate his victory, he made himself a trophy out of cardboard, gold star stickers, and dried macaroni that he keeps in a display case in his room.
- He really wants to join in on the Mario Kart races, but keeps getting rejected because Warp Stars are too overpowered, apparently.
- Kazuya really hates him, but poor Kirby doesn't understand why. After Kazuya tried to kill him, Kirby picked some purple flowers and gave them to him as a peace offering. The grumpy devil man thought they were poisonous and crushed them underfoot. Poor Kirby was heartbroken, but he understood that Kazuya didn't have much plant knowledge. He seemed to hate him even more after Kirby showed him his copy ability. Legend has it that Kirby is still trying to win him over to this day.
- His favorite dessert is strawberry cheesecake and you can't convince me otherwise.
- Ever since Ken told Kirby about going to Disneyland with his family, it's become Kirby's dream vacation. He's currently saving up for a trip with the entire roster. His main goal is to meet Mickey Mouse.
- Over the winter, Kirby taught Pichu how to ice skate. Sephiroth was proud to see his son learning new things.
- Kirby and Samus enjoy eating spicy stuff together. Though he usually ends up with fire breath, he always has a good time.
- He brews the best tea in the world. If a fighter is feeling sick, he has tons of herbal tea recipes to help with whatever ailment they have.
- When it's rainy outside, he and the Pokemon will go out and jump in puddles.
- He has the biggest sweet tooth, but can't stand orange or lime sherbet. He doesn't know what it is, there's just something about it that he doesn't like.
- He loves scavenger hunts! During holidays, he always sets up themed scavenger hunts for the fighters to enjoy.
- He's one of the only fighters who have seen Meta Knight without his mask (the other is King Dedede). Being the kind friend he is, Kirby's never told anyone what he looks like.
- Kirby's usually opposed to stealing, but once in a while, he just likes taking Mario's hat. It's super comfortable, and it gives him an excuse to hang out with Cappy more.
- He and Jigglypuff are two peas in a pod. They're almost always together.
- When Jigglypuff has a bad fur day, Kirby is there in a flash with two combs and some hairspray. He doesn't really know what he's doing, but he tries his best to help her out.
- Kirby, Jigglypuff, and Little Mac have weekly binge-watching sessions. It all started when Little Mac had Kirby watch every episode of Naruto with him. After they finished, Jigglypuff later joined them and they ended up watching the entirety of Sailor Moon. Now, the three of them plan on tackling One Piece.
- He plays co-op games with Fox all the time.
- Link once took Kirby to Hyrule and introduced him to the Gerudo. Long story short, they're the only two voe allowed to enter Gerudo Town.
- Kirby is the type to snack on ice chips.
- This pink ball of destruction is incapable of getting brain freeze.
- His favorite Song from the Smash soundtrack is Green Greens from Melee. He loves Green Greens as it is, but this version makes him feel like he's on a quest.
Note: Next week, there will be not one, not two, but three sets of headcanons for your viewing pleasure. Stay tuned for the mercenary space fox, everyone's favorite supercharged rodent, and the lean, green fighting machine.

#1 - Galaxian (1979) (Yes, Actually)
Tumblr media
What the? You said you'd be playing all the Pacs! But that's clearly Galaxian! What gives?! Well, if you'll just sit down, you'll understand a bit...
So... Technicality is a funny thing. One moment you're sitting down to play every single Pac-Man game you can think of in chronological order, and the next thing you know, you're playing a game before Pac-Man chronologically released. Such is the power of highly-specific iconography that would later come to be heavily associated with the series actually appearing in a game before it even existed!
So. Galaxian. You've probably heard of it if you've heard of video games before--or at the very least, you've heard of its older brother, Galaga. While the latter doesn't meet the requirements to be a Pac (and quite frankly, this game almost didn't), there's juuust enough here that makes us raise an eyebrow and say, "this'll do."
Tumblr media
What's this? Why, at the top of the "Score Advance Table" is none other than... The word "Convoy"! And below that and to the left is none other than the Galaxian Flagship. On the off-chance you've never gotten far enough in Pac-Man before, or just never used his Neutral B in Smash, that there alien flagship was effectively Namco's de-facto mascot before Pac-Man really shook things up for them. As a result, it got a cameo in the first Pac-Man game and has been closely orbiting Pac-Man ever since!
Also, wait, the Galaxians are the heroes and we're just fighting aliens? That's definitely strange, seeing as in Galaga the enemies are manned by the "Boss Galaga", which seems to imply the alternative.
Tumblr media
Though, not as strange as the fact your ship is also called a... Galaxip. Just rolls off the tongue there.
Tumblr media
Okay, one thing that's not apparent in these still images is that this game is shrill. Like, very high-pitched and very squeaky. Especially compared to many other early Arcade games, it sticks out like a sore thumb in just how dang loud this game is. Anyways, the standard game loop of Galaxian aren't really anything to write home about--and they weren't even when the game first released. Space Invaders had already existed for some time, after all.
No, Galaxian stood out for a few other reasons. For one, as that cyan alien is kindly demonstrating, the aliens don't just sit there and take your fire, only occasionally firing back. No, when an alien wants to fire back, it descends from formation to both shoot at you and also try and take a swing at you--contact damage will kill you! Secondly, and why those Flagships are so important and why this game was as revolutionary as it was...
Tumblr media
Yep, the enemies actively employ the buddy system. Flagships will bring up to 2 Red Aliens with them at a time, descending upon you with not only increased firepower, but the red aliens will actually serve as a meat(? spacecraft?) shield for the Flagship, tanking shots themselves to prevent you from getting a solid shot in.
Tumblr media
They do a good job, evidently, because wow we stink at Galaxian. We'd like to think we're okay enough at video games--we've got a few challenge runs of games much more complex than this under our belt--but it just goes to show that sometimes the simplest things to grasp can totally kick you in the shins.
Tumblr media
In addition, however, there's one last detail; should there only be a few aliens left standing, they'll enter a sort of panic mode and, instead of returning to their spot in formation, they will gladly charge you endlessly. Forever, if necessary! Until either you shoot them down or they take you out, they will endlessly circle from the top to the bottom, wrapping back around and occasionally firing at you.
Tumblr media
So, let's say you brave the trials that the Flagship ship poises, and properly gun it down in spite of its bodyguards. The game's actually equipped to handle various possibilities and reward you accordingly for how "dangerous" the game deemed it. The factors--as far as we could tell--are if the Flagship died last, and how many Red Aliens guarding it you took out. Pictured is the result of gunning down the maximum two red aliens guarding a Flagship, before gunning the Flagship itself down. This resulted in 800 points, the maximum amount you can get out of a Flagship! It's worth mentioning you only have one bullet per round, so your aim needs to be pretty good to get this. One miss and that thing will gladly rocket to the other end of the screen, leaving you a sitting duck while the aliens get to circle back unscathed.
Tumblr media
You may be wondering if anything unique happens if you clear the board of all aliens. Does the game end? Are the Galaxians safe from the intergalactic conflict they've found themselves in? Do the aliens do a little dance?
Tumblr media
Nope, the round simply resets and a new set of aliens shows up. You actually get a little indicator of how many rounds you've cleared in the bottom right, however--looking it up, the game will actually abbreviate the flags if you clear 10 rounds of this. Can you imagine 10 rounds of pure, unaltered Galaxian? Too much for us, at least.
Tumblr media
Still, this was a fun time, and we're glad we got to sit down and warm up to this project with this game. Get our proverbial feet wet, and all that. But let's be real here--you didn't come here for the Flagship. You're here for a different guy entirely.
Never you mind, we getcha, and we hear ya loud and clear. And no fake-outs next time; we're playin' the original Pac-Man. See ya whenever we get around to that one!
