Name: Mr. Egg, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Hot Dog
Debut: BurgerTime
BurgerTime is one of those retro games and that's about it. It existed, and it's Retro!, and I feel like people don't really care about it aside from that. It never even got an awkward attempt at a scrimblo adventure reboot, like Frogger did! Poor BurgerTime.
Anyway, my first time playing BurgerTime was not by playing BurgerTime at all, but a SpongeBob Flash game clone of it. I have no personal connection to BurgerTime itself... but I know it has some enemies that are living foods! I always get a kick out of that! So I'm going to talk about some of the various design incarnations of them!
These original designs are exactly what you would expect from a 1982 arcade game. I feel like I've seen Pac-Man ghosts drawn EXACTLY like this. I like how Mr. Egg has the strangely realistic crispy bubbling detail around his edges. They're all fine.
...is what I felt before I noticed their elbows and knees! Ew! Bones! Wretched creatures!
Tumblr media
Ohoho... now what have we here? The in-game sprites are delightful! The simplicity makes them very cute! Their feet are interesting, being just little floating lines, except for Mr. Egg's, because his legs are made of amorphous albumen! Mr. Egg is really the breakout star here. Look at his yolk! That's his EYE! This is so awesome! That's such a rare design choice to see, especially since egg creatures that are not of the "creature hatching from them" variety are pretty rare themselves.
Mr. Pickle is no slouch either! I appreciate him being specifically a pickle slice, often portrayed as nicely crinkle-cut. I just have to question why he is a villain! Pickles are one of Burger's best friends! This is like if Cheese was a villain! I think if anything Mr. Pickle should be a cute little sidekick on the side of burgers, and in his place can be, I don't know, Mr. Olive? Of course, pickles are much funnier than olives!
Mr. Hot Dog is not as interesting as the other two, but a simple sausage with eyes and feet is still cute. He is like the leader of the bunch, the main antagonist of our hero, Peter Pepper, who I do not really care about. I like that it's him! Burgers and hot dogs are like counterparts, but in no way equals. Hot dogs are easier to hold and eat, but burgers are just Better. And hot dogs have finally decided to give burgers a piece of their mind!
Tumblr media
This flyer art is funny. I don't LIKE any of the designs showcased, but they're funny! Faces are moved around on the foods, noses are introduced to the series, and Mr. Egg is now a slice of a hard-boiled egg. You will also notice the elusive Mr. Lemon! Mr. Lemon is not real! I don't know why there is such an emphasis on lemon here. Finally, of course, you will notice the personified Cheese, as she noselessly beckons Peter to recline atop a beef patty. Ooh la la! Don't you wish you were invited to hang out with such a beautiful female cheese who is a girl woman?
Really, the designs of the core food fiends never diverged much from the classic cartoon-style versions they started out with, appearing like that in pretty much every sequel. Except...!
Tumblr media
In BurgerTime World Tour, which was not a good game at all, these guys have been utterly rebooted! Now known as Frank Furter, Ruthless Dill, and Sonny! Are these their real names? Or just some similar guys?
The designs are rather basic, as to be expected from Foods With Faces, but it IS interesting seeing them generally made so much more monstrous. Something ESPECIALLY interesting is that Sonny the egg is the only one with limbs, reminding me of how Mr. Egg is the only one to have actual legs in the original sprites!
Ready for the SCARIEST redesign from World Tour?
Tumblr media
This game's version of Peter Pepper is this horrible gentrifying millenial and I'm glad his game was prematurely delisted. I hope he got eaten by an egg and chewed by teeth made of yolk. I hate him!

I always imagined Burger-Poe’s barking head bouncing open kind of like the animation in the old arcade game, Burger Time. This is a rare strip where I would love to see the gag actually animated. And just a heads up, but I’m not going to rerun ALL of the strips from this storyline. I will be running a couple more reruns over the next few weeks and new strips will start back up on April 5th, so thanks again for your patience as I get back on my feet and get caught up.

BurgerTime
BurgerTime, originally released as Hamburger in Japan, is a 1982 arcade video game developed by Data East, initially for its DECO Cassette System. The player is chef Peter Pepper, who must walk over hamburger ingredients in a maze of platforms and ladders while avoiding anthropomorphic hot dogs, fried eggs, and pickles which are in pursuit.
In the United States, Data East USA licensed BurgerTime for distribution by Bally Midway as a standard dedicated arcade game. Data East also released its own version of BurgerTime in the United States through its DECO Cassette System. The Data East and Midway versions are distinguished by the manufacturer's name on the title screen and by the marquee and cabinet artworks, as the game itself is identical. The game's original Japanese title Hamburger changed outside of Japan to BurgerTime, reportedly to avoid potential trademark issues. In addition to all releases in the Western world, BurgerTime also became the title used for the Japanese ports and sequels.
The first home port of BurgerTime was released for the Intellivision console in 1983, followed by versions for other systems. There have been multiple sequels for both the arcade and home.
When Data East went bankrupt in 2003, G-Mode bought most of Data East's intellectual properties, including BurgerTime, BurgerTime Deluxe, Super BurgerTime, and Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory.
The object of the game is to build a number of hamburgers while avoiding enemy foods. The player controls the protagonist, chef Peter Pepper, with a four-position joystick and a "pepper" button.
Each level is a maze of platforms and ladders in which giant burger ingredients (bun, meat patty, tomato, lettuce) are arranged. When Peter walks the full length of an ingredient, it falls to the level below, knocking down any ingredient that happens to be there. A burger is completed when all of its vertically aligned ingredients have been dropped out of the maze and onto a waiting plate. The player must complete all burgers to finish the board.
Three types of enemy food items wander the maze: Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg. The player can score extra points by either crushing them under a falling ingredient or dropping an ingredient while they are on it. In the latter case, the ingredient falls two extra levels for every enemy caught on it. Crushed or dropped enemies return to the maze after a short time.
At the start of the game, the player is given a limited number of pepper shots to use against enemies. Pressing the button causes Peter to shake a cloud of pepper in the direction he is facing; any enemy touching the cloud is briefly stunned, and Peter can safely move through them. Ice cream, coffee, and French fries appear on occasion, awarding bonus points and one extra pepper shot when collected.
There are six boards of increasing difficulty, with more burgers/ingredients, more enemies, and/or layouts that make it easier for Peter to become cornered. After the player completes the sixth board, the cycle repeats. One life is lost whenever Peter touches a non-stunned enemy, and the game ends once all lives are lost.

🍔 Review № 594 ━ 📍 The Döner Factory ★★★☆☆ • The Döner Factory have two restaurants in Gothenburg, one in the city center by Avenyn and one in Mölndal Galleria, where they serve burgers, pizza and kebab. Their burger menu consists of eight smash burgers, and we ordered two different ones; a Double Cheese Burger with two 80-gram beef patties, four slices of cheddar, pickles and ketchup, and a Hot Gringo with two 80-gram beef patties, double cheddar, bacon, pickled red onions, lettuce, roasted onions, chipotle mayo and a spicy BBQ sauce. They cost 89 SEK (8 USD) each, and we also upgraded them with french fried and a dip for an additional 30 SEK (2.5 USD). • Our burgers came served on a tray, together with a large heap of french fries. But our double cheese burger looked surprisingly small, and we actually had to double-check that the kitchen had got our order right. And when we started eating we immediately noticed how soft our burgers were, especially the cheeseburger. The patties had some crust, but we would have liked it to be deeper to create a better balanced burger with different textures. The beef flavour was a bit anonymous as well, and we would have liked some more seasoning. The pickles were very sweet too, and together with the ketchup we got a very soft and sweet cheeseburger. The Hot Gringo was much better, with some heat from the barbecue sauce and added textures from the added ingredients. The large order of french fries tasted rather nice and was crispy, and were well worth the added cost. • We were happy to find smash burgers in Gothenburg, but we can't escape the fact that The Döner Factory haven't nailed the concept quite yet. But they still serve reasonably priced and decent burgers, and are worth a visit if you're hungry in the area. ━ @doner.factory.se #burger #burgers #burgertime #burgerporn #burgerdudes #burgerlovers #food #foodie #hamburger #hamburgare #stockholm #gothenburg #gothenburgburgers #gbg #gbgburgers #🍔 #🍟 #🇸🇪 (at Gothenburg) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj2DACEj6aJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
