persona misogyny is so fucking wild. ignoring literally everything else about the entire rest of the games, every single s.link with a female character is like “entirely for having been born a woman i have had to work twice as hard for a fraction of the benefit. even now, i am stripped of my agency in a position i never wanted in the first place” and/or “i’m put on a pedestal by the people in my life because of my looks. men see me as an object to be conquered, women hate me for ‘stealing’ ‘their’ men. if i’m withdrawn i’m a bitch, if i’m friendly i’m easy. because of this, i’m alone” and/or “because of my personality or hobby or lack of cooking skills, i feel like i’m failing at femininity. if being a woman is something i can fail at, then where does that leave me? i’m scared at the loss of my identity and place in society”
like very consistently they present female characters with complex thoughts towards their place in society as women, femininity as a whole, and facing issues stemming from misogyny, and then the payoff is always “my problems were entirely my own fault. i wasn’t strong enough, i was a coward. but now, i’m gonna work hard to be exactly what society expects me to be (which is what i want to be)! i’m gonna do better at femininity (which is still something tangible i can fail at)! i’m going to try hard at making friends (which was my fault for not doing)! all my problems are solved through personal responsibility (that im totally culpable for), effort (which i previously was not putting in), or you, a man! i am Happy and Satisfied with this outcome, can i be Your woman?”
and like hello? why are we here. what the fuck are we doing. why do we keep doing this every single time. can we not do the constant lukewarm attempts at criticizing misogyny so you can jerk off to your own thoughtfulness, while ultimately reinforcing patriarchal systems and brushing off any deeper misogyny-bred issues as a lack of deference to one’s rightful place in society? like maybe don’t do that? for fucking once? just an idea

Some Thoughts™️
I keep seeing stuff about Greta Gerwig making a remake of the Narnia franchise; my opinions on the need for the remake aside, I keep seeing people in the comments complaining that she better not be casting black or trans people and that she better not make it a feminist story because it will “detract from the true meaning” (Christianity) and some explicitly saying it will “ruin a good Christian story” and I can’t help but think,,,,,,,,,,, if the inclusion of POC, of queer people, of strong female characters “ruins” your Good Christian Story About Good Christian People,,,,, then I think you Christianity fucking sucks

I think you have nostalgia glasses on cause half of those Roy Kory moments are the dude being a creep. Girl's trying to have a meaningful conversation and even tells him to stop and dude keeps trying to pick her up. This despite her obviously stating she wants to improve her relationship with Dick. The behavior's still misogynistic your just giving it a pass because its sexist in an old timey kind of way.
I am not looking at it with nostalgia lol i am fully aware that the 80s series is full of misogyny and sexist undertones. Roy’s behaviour is creepy for 90% of the time (i think he even forcefully kisses kory which is ew). NTT is very of it’s time i have no misconception of it being some kind of progressive text compared to other contemporary series. But you also need to understand how an audience of that era would read those scenes and they would read it as Roy being very flirty and straightforward to Kory, being a potential option for her. It adds to the whole soap opera vibe of NTT and builds tension for the dk romance. It’s obviously very inappropriate and Kory makes it clear time and time again that she only wants to be with Dick and only him (there was this time dick was sorta gone or presumed dead and roy immediately swings in and says to kory you can date me i’m just like him but better and kory’s like nice try).
It’s very clearly creep behaviour but a young reader of that time would just read it as Roy meddling in their budding relationship and being a potential romantic rival for Dick. This is like, a classic trope in most romance fiction. Throughout NTT you can see dickkory but especially Kory having to prove constantly that they truly love the other. All of Roy’s propositions were rejected by Kory when she’s with Dick. In fact kory pretty much shoots down all advances towards her when she’s dating Dick, she’s also very annoyed by it all. It’s unfortunate but this is a common trope (happens in shounen animanga to this day) where male characters flirt and go after female characters to signal to the audience how attractive she is. It also reflects the writers own behavior towards women imo. That an attractive woman can’t do anything without others in her vicinity objectifying her. The only reason I added those panels was because it’s got an inkling of flirting going on and as time goes by Kory and Roy become very close and understanding friends. So like, a possibility of romance is there. That does not mean i’m ok with Roy completely sidestepping Kory’s concerns in that scene.
If i had my way Roy’s flirting with Kory wouldn’t be so dismissive of her authority. It feels ooc now that Roy would continue to (jokingly or not) pursue her when she’s made it clear she doesn’t want to (she even blasts him with a starbolt i think one time so yeah he deserves to get his ass beat). But i think it’s just a reflection of the writers own unchecked misogyny and unfortunately most readers from that era would not find much issue with it (at most they’d think Roy’s a jerk friend for trying to get with his buddy’s girl).

(CW for SA, suicidal ideation) Here we go. My favorite and simultaneously least favorite panel of Vash and Knives.
I've seen a few interpretations of this scene and before we dive into the one that really struck me, let's start with the more... chill one. We're finally introduced to the third gun of Trigun, Vash's angel arm. And the way we're introduced to it involves Knives forcing him to pull the trigger. Of course, since no one knows anything about Knives, the people of Noman's Land blame Vash for Fifth Moon, and Vash likewise blames himself (this is kinda a spoiler but if you've been paying attention, it's just par for the course). However, he's not the one who pulled the trigger, Knives is. It brings up an interesting moral question of blame - do we blame the gun (and Vash, who is being used/objectified as a weapon here), or the person who wanted it to happen? Guns don't kill people, genocidal twins do!
Now for the awful interpretation, the one that makes me cry and wish Vash was real so I could hug him and pay for his therapy. And really highlights how awful Knives is and how far he'd go for his brother in his own, fucked-up way. I touched on this in a previous post about Legato and the Murder Cafe, and the whole time I was thinking about Fifth Moon but didn't want to say anything for the sake of spoilers.
So. Pay attention to the way Vash and Knives are standing. Knives, when he first grabbed Vash's head, was standing in front of him. He moves behind him to better control him and yeah, he's still controlling him via hand on head, and now he's got his other hand gripping Vash's chest, where feathers/wings are manifesting. Knives is assaulting him. If you wanna get crazy with it and say that the angel arm is kinda phallic, you could say... yeah. This is rape. I heard that specific interpretation once and while I accepted it I also don't know if that would be generally accepted or if I'd be called out for it, so I'm trying to tread lightly here.
It also doesn't escape me that of course the angel arm has feminine features like the plants - the plants that, again, humans are exploiting for their ability to create. There's a lot of feminist commentary to be made here but many people have said it better than me. Specifically I'm thinking of this one post I saw about gender fuckery and Tristamp Vash. Anyway.
Also, the atomic bomb/black hole/sun/whatever that is in the middle... It's just so powerful. It's terrifying. The eldritch body horror here is a punch to the gut. What the fuck, Trigun? I thought this was a funky space western!!!
Oh, and here's more commentary on the following few panels:
Vashussy shot, Knives is still right behind him. Yeah, I wasn't kidding about how bad this pose is for them. Knives, you sick fuck.
Vash shoots himself in the leg (a key difference from '98 trigun, lol), because of course he does, but it doesn't free him from the arm.
The arm's getting darker/the light inside is getting lighter! Stampede did an awesome job with their interpretation of the angel arm and I don't think I would have understood it without that. Also, on my first read I didn't notice that Vash is literally levitating, which is cool, but also terrifying because ?? he's not in control of that either??
Finally. A super painful, minimalist, double-page spread. Nightow loves 'em. Vash thinks he's dying (maybe?) and he wishes he had never existed. It's not suicidal ideation per se, but he wishes he didn't exist at all because he's already caused enough suffering. This is a low for him, because he believes so strongly in the concept of the Blank Ticket. (Come on, soupy brain bitch boy, get it together!) He's a monster, it's just how he was born, and he's not in control. Very specifically too, he says "we", and then changes it to "I"... he doesn't blame Knives at all, and that's very him. I want to shake him! Stop playing the martyr, Vash!

‼️‼️SPOILERS FOR LISA FRANKENSTEIN AND POOR THINGS‼️‼️
It is so hilarious that Lisa Frankenstein and poor things came out at the same time bc on one hand we have
- movie thats really focused on advertising itself as feminist
- uses the moms body as basically an incubator and completely robs her of her singular act of agency right after roe v wade got overturned
- proceeds to sexualize said mothers body while also sexualizing her child’s immaturity plus gratuitous sex scenes showing how she’s “exploited”
- absolutely refuses to show the “female version of Frankenstein” with any scars or body hair she would absolutely be imperfect and wounded like it’s giving let me go shave my hairless legs
- written and directed by a man
- kinda weird and neurodivergent/mentally ill coded and is mean to the characters about it
And that’s the one winnning all the laurels while the movie with
- a female writer and director
- 1 sex scene which is very consensual and shows literally nothing
- multiple female characters all of which display agency and have wildly different personalities
- the characters are allowed to have trauma and be fucked up but also the first person killed is a lady calling the main character insane (bad) and threatening to lock her up because she doesn’t like her
- accurately shows SA without being gratuitous
- male lead doesn’t have any lines except reading poetry to the girl at the end, other than that there’s like three guys who talk
- real pretty visuals
- hilarious
- the male lead lacks a voice and very specific anatomy but it’s still emphasized how he’s still very much a man
- kills the guys who commits SA
- her sister stealing her crush doesn’t ruin their relationship, she’s still emphatic to her
- SO MUCH set design detail and it looks SO PRETTY
-camp
And THATS the one flying under the radar?!? My guy Lisa Frankenstein is what poor things wishes it was
