With Mother's and Father's Days coming up, don't forget to thank your parents for all the roles they had in your household growing up.
🫵🏻 And don't you dare downplay your roles in your own households! We all wear a lot of hats in our day to day lives!
"What industry do you work in?"
"Um, self employed, but hospitality and food service...and maintenance...and interior design, and automotive, healthcare. Oh! Agriculture! Arts. Consulting. Finance. Fashion, beauty, religion. Um, non-profit, hehe. I hope to get into childcare soon, as well as sports and recreation, and maybe branch out into education after that, depending on what my husband and I decide on."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"I'm a homemaker."

Okay, so I wrote this before I even knew that Florence was featured on a song. Just listened to it, it's fine. The best parts are Florence.
I don't think it was smart to feature Florence because, side by side, you can really hear how not good if a sober Taylor is. Florence can belt, and Taylor used to belt all the time around Reputation, and does a little on Florida, but not worth the quality that Florence can (there will be simping in this post btw).
Florence has a beautiful vibrato, and is able to make her trills not sound pitchy, just harmonic to the other vocals. Taylor has no vibrato (which is not her fault, a lot of singers don't naturally, I don't but I can fake a vibrato) and that's a nice quality to her voice, is how clean it sounds. It lends very well to her impeccable diction and (historically) conversational cadence, a prime example is I Forgot That You Existed off of the Lover album.
And speaking of that song, it did to great affect what I think Taylor was trying to do to almost all the songs on this new album. See, in I Forgot That You Existed, the verses build up to the chorus, but then the chorus arrives and stays pretty close to the verse it's succeeding. No hype. No bombastic resolution, just a feeling of freedom from the verses. And that worked because that's feeling she's trying to convey in the lyrics of the song! The melody, beat, lyrics, timing, and her conversational delivery all work together to convey the relief of not caring about an ex anymore!
Her new songs, there's no build up, no resolution, no nothing. It's so one note. She goes seamlessly (not in a good way) from verse to chorus to verse to bridge to ending verse with no bombast.
There is bombast on Florida, but only from the parts that heavily feature Florence. But even she can't save this song, because it, too, feels very one note.
I have been writing lyrics since I was very young, and yes, they were as cringey as you can imagine. I would write the lyrics, then come up with the melody as I sang it. Needless to say, I constantly forgot the melody the next time I tried to sing it. Ugh. I can't read or write sheet music, which true, never stopped Elvis or Michael Jackson, but I also can't play any instrument besides my voice and the penny whistle (and not terribly deftly at that). So, basically, all my songs kinda sounded the same, with the exception of two or three outliers through the years.
Taylor's new songs sound the same as the songs I wrote when I was young. And that's not a brag for me, that's an indictment on Taylor. Those songs were terrible. No buildup, no bombast, no resolution, no character. Just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus.
Taylor Swift's newest album would sound better if she had Florence Welch vocals...
