The past few days I sat down again to try to merge 3D Blender backgrounds with my drawings for an upcoming (web)comic project. I‘ve worked with Sketchup backgrounds a lot in the past, but at some point they became a little lacking. I‘ll probably still use it for a few things, but my main focus shifted to Blender. (Which is a monster to learn… but it‘ll pay off in the end.)

However it‘s not as easy to get a good look fitting my drawings with a new program.

This was the first try this time and I was quite content with it until my friends pointed out, that it still looked „very 3D“ - which was not my intention. I tried to make it look better by drawing over a few parts and at some point just stopped, crying in frustration.

Something had to have been wrong in the rendering phase already. So I tried again - with a different background, because I didn‘t have this one anymore. It‘s just something I quickly threw together from an asset library and then deleted because it has no use for the comic. So I threw together a new scene from the same asset library, changed some settings in the color management for the render and…

Yeah, that looks a lot better already. I also added freestyle lines back in and rendered the shadows as their own pass so I can change them by themselves in CLIP Studio. I also didn‘t go ham with the filters in Photoshop. Only a slight buz-sim and watercolor filter this time.

I could already use it like this in my comic. =) The day was saved.

And then I accidentally fell down a rabbit hole that is Kristof Dedene and his work for DillonGoo Studios and their own version of Blender that has a few extra nodes. NODES… a thing that I have barely touched but seemingly can help so much more in my quest for good NPR.

So I subscribed to their Patreon, got the Blender version and followed some tutorials…
