The Public Domain Discourse, as I decided to call it ("characters and works should never enter the Public Domain because that's disrespectful to the original artist") is fascinating to experience.
You see, I usually stay very successfully away from fandom discourses. The way I'm doing this is by completely ignoring everything and everyone, and just doing my own thing. Said thing consists to a good part out of older media, because old media fandoms are chill as fuck. There are usually around five people at a time talking about whatever thing, and it is very easy to be friendly if you know that there are only five of you. Even if you don't like something that someone does, you put some effort into ignoring it and focus on the fact that at least this person likes the same thing you do. I have read fic before that features a ship that borderline squicks me out, because it also featured a pulp hero I was hyperfocussing on at the moment and couldn't find anything else. And I had a lovely conversation with the author in the comment section. A lot of old media fandoms is just telling people that the Thing even exists. Or someone draws a picture, maybe writes a story. I have seen a lot of analysis.
So that's what it is normally like. Now suddenly in the middle of it all burst a bunch of randos yelling about how the Public Domain shouldn't exist, because what if somebody makes Bad Art with it. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW AMAZING SOME BIGGER PROFILE ART ABOUT SOME OF MY FAVORITE HEROES WOULD BE?!

A Very Brief and Very Sectional Look At Fandom History With Reguards to Central Archiving With TK
Fact 1: We're starting with a time in fandom when I was 8 or 9
Fact 2: There are some amazing, extrmely well fact checked fandom histories already out there
Fact 3: The internet is forever and so are all your fandom sins.
Pre FF.N days were weird and rough. Star Trek had been the predominate fandom through the 70s, though fandom goes back hundreds of years (see: Sherlock Holmes). Pre 90s was the time of zines and cons and letters. Mid 90s, thanks to the now-much more common place home internet fandoms like DragonRiders of Pern flourished.
In the beginning, creators tried to be very involved in their fandom. Some, like Tamora Pierce were on the peripheral due to their fears of copyright issues (ie they'd accidentally borrow an idea from fans and then somehow need to credi them) and others, like Anne McCaffrey and Anne Rice were significantly more involved.
Redwall was my first fandom. While now I would never say there was a safe space for kids in the single digits to hang around online in, this was actually true statement then. Jaques had safe sites listed on his website and the fandom was a strong one. ITW (rip :(((() was still the primary message board system and most sites were hosted on netscape or angelfire. The death knoll for this fandom was the fall of ITW, there was just too much lore lost when it went down.
As Redwall waned, Anne Rice was cooking up her bullshit. There's some really well done Anne Rice Bullshit fanlore histories, but basically she used actual lawyers to send fans writing fanfic C&D letters and went after websites and fan content. It was horrifc. Some amazing people fled fandom forever, starting in about 1995. This picked up steam in 2000 when she absolutely wrecked her way through her own fandom.
Anne McCaffrey was, at the same time, on some other bullshit. She approved of and liked her fandom, but she was horrifically homophobic and if there was even a hint of gay anything, she'd throw a fit. She also didn't want anyone writing or RPing women in leadership roles (Bronze and Brown riders for those who read the books) and at some point in… 1999? She put a ban on it and would attempt to get your website taken down if they were rolled.
FFN started in 1998, which feels like it was late to the party. It started as an 18+ archive but by 2002 when the greatbreak happened (your sister is your aunt, hey fam) some ⅓ of their accounts self IDd as under 18. At some point they lowered their age to 13+ which is inline with industry standards.
Before FFN central archiving was done fandom by fandom. FFN didn't take this away. Some of these (SG1, LOTR, HP) were hosted on their own domains, but many were hosted on sites like Geocities (rip). Every time a service like ITW or geocities went down, a ton of fandom was lost forever. This was a high flux time, when fandom archives for even huge fandoms like HP were coming and going faster than you could upload your fics and each archive had it's own politics. What ships did they allow, what genres, what ratings… It varied based on who paid the bills.
FFN was a novel concept, and many fans flocked to it. Having a central archive? For all our fandoms? Glorious.
But what one must remember is that this was also a very weird time for media and the portrayal of gay people (mostly men). Anything involving a m/m relationship was basically two ratings higher than it would have been listed if the couple was het. Entire archives banned it (there was an epic two year long fandom battle in the HP fandom about including m/m relationships in archives not explicitly for m/m relationships).
Which of course led to most m/m fics having explicit or at least an R rating.
Several things happened in a quick timeline in the fandom world in the early 2000s.
1) LOTR came out and took over the known universe. And because there weren't a lot of women in LOTR, there were a lot more m/m fics suddenly. And movie studios were seeing that fandom was Big and Exciting and that Geeks Can Make Us Money. They attempted to put up a monetized website run by the studio to host fanfiction but once added to it, you lost all rights to your work and they could republish it, edit it, or utilize the idea however they wished without crediting you.
Needless to say, this went over like a lead balloon and their submissions were…. Choice.
2) FFN got sued or something and all of the sudden Xi cared A LOT about the content of their site. In september of 2202 they pulled all NC17 fics from their site, all RPS, and most m/m content. The NC17 and RPS stuff was sudden, just entire sections gone, but the m/m stuff was slower and more insidious. They had mods of a sort reading through fandoms looking for "violations" and pulling down fics, and the general public could flag your fic and have it yanked without review.
You can imagine how fandom used this exactly as intended and never used it against people they didn't agree with or pairings they didn't like. Somewhere in there FictionPress also started and all original stuff got yeeted to a new home. Adultff.n came into existence around the same time, but was not run by Xi, had the world's shittiest layout, and required archival permission at one point, meaning you submitted stuff for approval. It wasn't great.
Also let us not forget the MPAA sued them because their ratings are proprietary. Yeeeep.
(also note that search functions within categories didn't exist on FFN at the time, not even based on completion status, word count, or pairing)
This was the birth of AO3. I don't remember where the OG idea came about, but there was a whole lot talk about this idea on LJ. At some point, Brad sold us out to the Russians to Six Apart and LJ was lost, and while many platforms tried to capture the soul of LJ, it just never managed to do so. DreamWidth, Tumblr, JournalFen, etc.
Another thing to remember, is that fandom had been predominately male, even on IIRC days, but FFN and LJ fandom had become a predominately female fandom space. There  was an absolute ton of back and forth about this, written by a lot of people who were way more eloquent than I was in 2005, but there is a lot to be said about the regulation and pushback against spaces where men have to ask for a seat at the table, instead of being offered one. Remember that, for good or for bad, slash fanfic is predominately written by and consumed by female fans.
Which is where we come to today and the central archive we know and love that is AO3. And why when asked by AO3 allows ANYTHING GOES on their website, up to and including things you personally find immoral and DEAD DOVE, we have to recall that AO3 was built as we were being censored and fandom was being ripped from our hands. We have to remember that, at one point, just your basic slash pairing was being pulled down from sites because whoever hosted it didn't like The Gays.
We have a decently detailed history of all fandom kerfluffles from 2002-2015, many of which these incidents were involved in, on FandomWank. Many FandomWank details have been archived in wikis and other timelines. Some have not. Wild Award Mentions go to: LimeyBean, MrsScribe, HP Shipper Wars, WIKTT's Pawn2Queen wars, and anytime SPN ever got mentioned ever. But none are as great and incredible as the saga of Limeybean.

Best oc that became a fan favorite in my little circle of online friends
Way back during my countryhumans days, I had this cat oc named Krampus. Krampus was Austria’s cat and the story goes was that one night Austria went to a bar, got black out drunk, fell asleep and woke up to find this long haired black scruffy kitten on his bed, Austria does not own a cat, nor does he remember acquiring said cat
Krampus hates everyone and everything that wasn’t long naps in the sun or salmon treats and was basically an old man trapped in a cat’s body
Krampus once cornered Germany in the bathroom one night while Germany was staying at Austria’s house and hissed at him
Krampus hates the Canadian national anthem
Krampus used to try and trip Austria’s BLIND FATHER ON PURPOSE
Krampus hates his bell collar and ate the bell
Krampus hates Austria’s Austro-Hungarian flag that he has hung up on his bedroom ceiling and would do everything in his will power to tear it down only to get snagged and scream until someone gets him down
Krampus hates classical music and would scream while Austria-Hungary is playing the piano
Krampus stole Austria-Hungary’s eyepatches and buried them in the litter box
One time while Krampus was outside trying to avoid walking on grass, Austria saw a group of dog walkers with their five big dogs walking up the street and he yelled “get your dogs out of here! I have a cat!” And before the dog walkers could explain that their dogs were calm and won’t harm the cat, Krampus flies out of nowhere and beats the living crap out of the dogs.
During one Christmas when they had a fire in the fireplace, Krampus just sat in front of it and starred at the flames for hours
Krampus once got out and climbed a huge pine tree that had a few high voltage power lines running through it, so Austria sends Hungary to risk his life by climbing up to the top of the tree, get dangerously close to the high voltage power lines while holding onto a pillowcase with one hand and the tree in the other all while Krampus is swatting at him and hissing and biting leaving Hungary resorting to yelling “KRAMPUS!! GET IN THE BAG!!” I can’t remember if Hungary just flung Krampus in the bag, or chopped the top of the tree down to reach Krampus. I know it was heavily inspired by the time my Brother had to get his son’s cat, Chris Farley, down from a tall pine tree with high voltage wires running just below him.
When My readers found out that Krampus was put down due to cancer, they were so mad at me. Even my mom was when I told her about Krampus, she said that Cats have nine lives so why not just bring Krampus back?
When Krampus got to heaven he went “so this is heaven, I hate it.”
There was going to be a follow up story where it’s the day Austria had to put Krampus down, and at the end it showed that Austrian Empire was there in the afterlife to look after Krampus.
When I told some redditors about Krampus without saying any of the character’s names or what fandom, one of them said “I don’t know anything about your fanfic or which fandom this is but I love Krampus”
I have decided that if I get another bunny, I’m naming them Krampus.
Krampus became so popular that one of my readers included him in a oneshot and another one of my readers on Wattpad drew this fanart of Krampus

So in addition to re-watching Forever Knight, I'm also watching Highlander: The Series again. They're basically companion shows because they were on TV at about the same time and address many of the same themes, in addition to both being urban fantasies. Their fandoms were also populated by many of the same people.
I was hugely into Highlander for years and wrote fanfic and was in the fandom and was basically crazy for it, mostly because of Methos, the oldest immortal, but I was also watching it in a time pre-You Tube, pre-torrents, pre-everything. We all taped our favourite eps from tv, but most of us didn't tape the complete shows because that just wasn't feasible in terms of time, space, etc. But obviously at least a few people did, because the shows are online now even though they were never released on DVD (edit: FK was released much later, but as far as I know HL was not).
Anyway, one of the peculiar things about watching Highlander in the late nineties was that, although the show had just finished its original run, for some kind of licensing reason that was never entirely clear to me at the time, season one was never played in Canada. It might have originally been, but every replay of the show started with season 2, and I came in right around the time the show was wrapping up or just slightly after, so I never actually saw season one. This was frustrating to me, but since my favourite characters all come in after season 2 starts I didn't get too worked up about it or go to great lengths to view it. But it was a kind of itch that was was never scratched.
Fast-forward to 2022 and I found HL online, the complete series, including season one. I'm actually enjoying it a lot. MacLeod is a lot less of a pain in the ass, quite a bit more relaxed and less sanctimonious, not to mention not quite so 1 BILLION XP INVINCIBLE. Tessa is actually a lovely character. And Richie is very funny in his younger incarnation, with a lot of his rough edges still there.
The show itself still has some rough edges too, as the writers worked out exactly what the mythos was going to be. For example, the Gathering appears to be happening at the beginning of the show, and MacLeod is convinced that no immortal has long left to live, but that convinction appears to have faded even by season two, since it isn't mentioned again, to my recollection.
But my biggest surprise has been Darius, because Darius is a lot like Methos. He's a priest and Methos isn't, but Methos is a researcher hiding in a secret organization, which is quite similar. Darius, like Methos, is a very old man with a young face, not to mention a former warlord who converts to peace (via Light Quickening, which is very interesting, and I do wonder if that's why Duncan is quicker to forgive Darius his past than he was Methos, because Darius is in some ways an entirely different person, while Methos changed the hard way. That actually makes it more commendable, but the blame still belongs to him as well, and you know Duncan...).
Additionally, Darius is a mentor who can predict Duncan's failings before they happen (although less openly cynical than Methos, he clearly understands the way of the world) exactly as happens on multiple occasions with Methos. Both are people that Duncan looks up to and respects intensely. The only thing missing in the Duncan-Darius relationship is the more casual element of friendship (Methos works very hard to dispel Mac's initial awe, which really backfires later), and that homoerotic tension that was always present between MacLeod and Methos, but other than that... I get the feeling that the show was missing a mentor for Duncan and Methos fit the bill. But while he was clearly conceived as a Darius-remix, Methos is a lot more fun, and seemingly far more of a chameleon than Darius was, in terms of how much he changed over the centuries, as well as a kind of fluid gender identity that was never clearly stated but which was easy to perceive. And because of the nature of his own paradigm shift, which was not a supernatural event, you can still see many elements of darkness in Methos that are seemingly absent in Darius.

Title: 'Bodie and Doyle Gimme Your Love' Vidder: zzebeddy Relationship: M/M Characters: Bodie/Doyle Rating: Not rated
Summary: Ray and Bodie find their groove, together.
I found this music track to be an irresistible scaffold for a 7Os/Pros-y adventure, however it didn't lend itself to shortening, so it ended up being a little longer than the projects I usually take on.
Playback tip: For best viewing, be sure to choose the 1080p HD setting on the Youtube player. (Click the settings wheel, click 'quality')
For now, this is an 'unlisted' video, which means it can be viewed via my archive/journal/fan comm posts, but not through general internet or YT searches.
Disclaimer: I do not own the show, characters or music. The music track is 'Gimme Your Love' by Morcheeba.
