Ok so since a few of my friends have been very passionate about Katherine lately I thought I'd also talk about her (and Denton) a bit, not specifically judging or calling out but just some thoughts I had on them personally. So who knows me knows I love 92sies and yeah I was mad at first for Disney shoving a Disney Plot twist (oh no the reporter is related to the villain, we can't trust her now) as well as a love plot for an independent working woman in and then even cut my man Denton when my ideal world would have both of them. (Additional info since seeing UKsies I am much more in favour of Jatherine but before that they had no chemistry for me almost which only made me more annoyed at the love interest thing)

Hear me out. So Denton is interested in the strike but at first definitely only a bit until Kony (or more rather the fight before where police is not stepping in but instead keeping children locked in so they can get hit and beat). In the world we have both of them working for the Sun I am imagining him seeing her drive and want to work, her aspiration and her feeling for a good story and telling her about it, saying she should maybe go to where the newsies hang out and ask about the strike as he knows she wants to get out of the social pages and probably doesn't yet know how big the strike would get. The very latest they'd both be there for the Brooklyn showing up fight (or just taking the picture before Kony, but I do like my world more with Brooklyn here early) and then both for different reasons get really involved in the strike, personally.

So not to talk more about the timeline but more about how different Denton and Katherine get into the strike and connected to the newsies. Denton has seen some things as an ace war reporter, I'm sure, especially terrible things and has most likely seen young boys fight, even if not in a strike. He's feeling for them as an older man who knows he isn't in their shoes, far from it, but he has empathy for them and sees how dependent on child labour the city is after a short while and also how unfair they are treated, admires their fight, but he doesn't get it all, which is where Katherine comes in. Katherine also has to fight, so so much, just to get acknowledged, just to work at all, and even then the newsies first and foremost react to her with misogyny, but she still knows their fight in ways Denton doesn't, knows how it is to earn almost nothing (because even if her father is rich her own money she makes is abysmally small, probably around what a newsie makes that doesn't sell 100papes per edition as as far as I read that is a Huge amount) and knows she will treat them as, in a way, people with an equal fight (at least after Kony).

Which is also fitting on the topic of "oh Denton paid their fees and food" Denton has most likely a lot of money as an older white man who was an 'ace war reporter' and is 'friends' with the governour (Denty *cough*) Katherine has almost no money she makes herself, it is unlikely that at this time she just has money from her father she can use, and she sees the newsies as people that she is sure wouldn't want charity and people just paying for their things (like food) and is therefore not only not able to pay their fees or for food but also at least wouldn't do much for food as they are both rude to her at first and she wants to treat them without thinking of them as "poor orphans where a rich socialite has to pay their food"

One last thing I do think she could see him as a father figure who actually supports her as Pulitzer doesn't seem to be fond of her working until he is bragging in front of Jack and Denton could be so supporting in the Sun, helping her with everything and even trying to get her stories. Just let them co-exist in peace

Ok. So. I've been needing to make this for a while, so I'll just put down my favorites in no particular order, it's SO hard to pick...

Summer Camp AUs :3

Mountain Ridge Camp for Boys by timetogoslumming

Javey & Sprace, T, 22/22

This is a really good summer camp AU of newsies! I love how it combines canon plot with a modern AU!

Summary: David was just looking for a summer job when he applied to work at Mountain Ridge Camp for Boys. He had no idea how much would change. For the first time in his life, David is part of a brotherhood, but not everyone is on the same side.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation by studentnumber24601 (Itsy Royal)

Javid & Specs/Dutchy (Sputchy?? Idk, but I <3 this ship) & Blink x OC, T, 40/40

The prank war in this is honestly the best + the reluctant ladies man Mush is LOL, it had me guessing the ships till the very end, especially with Blink.

Summary: Modern-day newsboys at summer camp. Will wacky hijinks ensue? Gee, ya think?

Make Off Like a Band(it) by thespiritscalling

Sprace, G, 14/14

OMG. It's the funniest summer camp au I've read that sheds light on band camp (I'm an orchestra kid so this was hilarious to me). I especially love the That's Amore remix near the end lmaoo

Summary: It's the summer after graduation. Race is ready to hit the road- metaphorically, of course- but before that happens, it's time for one last stint at the Camp To End All Camps: band camp. Armed with nothing more than a French horn, two best friends, and reckless abandon, Race decides it's going to be the best final year of camp anyone's ever had. It'll be full of excitement, laughter, music, and an absurd crush on the lead trumpet player. Wait. What?

You're gonna need the tissues for this one. I literally sob every time I read it, it's literally one of the best fics I've ever read. It's poetically tragic and heartbreaking and beautiful and HOLY CRAP!

Summary: Katherine Plumber, 17, had been so sure that she could stay the same, that she could stop the world, that she'd stay young forever. The world kept moving, though, no matter how hard she tried to stop it, and it forced her to move with it.

When Manhattan Met Brooklyn by warrior_sif

No ships cause they're kids, T, 4/4 (but the second one isn't finished :( )

Wow. Just wow. This one is honestly sad and I love the brother relationship between Jack, Race, and Spot and how Jack feels abandoned, like Race chose Spot over him. READ IT.

Summary: The only Manhattan newsies that Spot Conlon deals with are Jack and Race. A look back at how they met, eight years before the strike, when neither Jack nor Spot were leaders and Race just wants to sell at the racetracks.

False Rumors and The Truth Behind Them by FrogmanFae

Sprace, M, One Shot

This one is...heavy. The Refuge is such a bad place :( I love it though, the writing is beautiful.

Summary: Rumor has it that Spot Conlon and Racetrack Higgins met when Race started selling in Brooklyn because of his love for gambling. That isn't as true as the other boys in their lodging houses tend to make it seem. Though, they don't necessarily mind the false rumors. They hide the much darker truth. The truth that still causes Race to make the walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn in the middle of the night sometimes, even several years later. Or...It's pretty easy to form connections with someone you're forced into sharing a bed with while you're both being tortured.

The King & The Cowboy by goldenbiebah

Sparah <3, Spot/Sarah/Jack love triangle, T, 11/? (not completed :sob: )

I love this one, it really touches on how Jack is kinda toxic and how Sarah can have someone wayyyy better *cough* Spot *cough*

Summary: Spot Conlon and Jack Kelly are the fearless leaders of all the newsies in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They have a perfect system and hundreds of boys who respect and look up to them. But what will happen when the two leaders let selfishness and pride break up their friendship? And what happens when Spot's dark past begins to catch up with him? There are so many ships that I can't remember but I do know Sprace is one, T, 80/80 (I know that's a lot but it is SO worth it holy frick)

Ok. So. This one is like SO good. It's my fav high school AU because it has a really genius way of incorporating the canon plot with the perfect amount of angst, fluff, and more! :D

Summary: The same old story, the same old song. A tale in which the newsies of Lower Manhattan go on strike, and David Jacobs gets roped into it. High School AU set in 1999. Told through the eyes of multiple characters.

I LOVEEE this one it's so crazy and you're in for a wild ride when (it's so cute that you think I'm letting that be an if :) ) you read it.

Summary:

“Ma– you seriously can’t do this to us!” Jack argued, “I mean it's Halloween!”

Charlie was quick to back his older brother up, “Yeah, do you want us to become hermits? Because that's what keeping us captive here all night will do!”

Medda rolled her eyes, “You will not become hermits by staying in for one night. It won’t be too bad, you can break into our Halloween candy and put on some horror movies, and Ester will be here with David soon. No kids are going out tonight, it’s just a safety precaution. Especially because of recent events.”

This one is soooo worth staying up late for, it's amazing in every way and my heart aches for Spottie boy. And Race. And Jack. And David. But mainly Spot :)

ajlskdfjalkjdkajl this one is so sweet. The concept of it is super interesting and I just LOVE ittttttt.

Meanwhile, in 1999, Tony Higgins receives an antique desk for his birthday and finds an old letter stuffed in one of the slots, the name, Spot, his only lead in this mystery. What becomes of that summer is a series of time-traveling letters, falling in love, and the realization that Spot and Tony know each other better than the two ever could have imagined.

I finished reading this last night and got literal chills. The plot twist is wild and I love it so much, but you might need the tissues again! Can't spoil, but you NEEEEEEEEEEEEED to read it >:( It is the absolute best piece of reading on the Earth and I can't get over this. It's just...wild.

Summary: A lot can happen in five years. Don't believe me? Ask David. Ask Spot. Ask Jack, or Racetrack. You can even ask Oscar Delancey. They know. They're the five who've been waiting for this moment. Waiting for what? They'll never tell - but this story will.

Idk if I should be doing this....but I'm gonna plug my own work and also give a fanfic update!

I'm honestly so proud of this one, it's one of the best pieces of writing I have ever done...

okok so I’ve seen some stuff abt denton/katherine recently n I wanna say my opinion 🥰 I don’t think any of this is gonna be offensive or anything, but if u do get offended pls don’t like,,,get mad n yell at me just tell me why/explain why it was offensive n I’ll totally fix it!

OK SO 😻 I absolutely adore kath, like honestly she’s amazing, and although definitely not one of my favourites (nothing against her btw but my love for all lf the newsboys is crazy so anyone who isn’t them is automatically lower down 😭) and I’m glad she’s a character we were introduced to! I know we got sarah in 92sies, but realistically I do think katherine fits in with the story sm better, not only keeping the idea of a love interest for jack but also actually giving us a female character that actually plays a big part plot wise, and (no offence to sarah 😭) is actually important to the story n has character

When I first watched newsies I didn’t rlly like katherine (but to be completely honest it’s just cuz it was her getting to be with Jeremy Jordan not me 😔💔) but when I was able to get over the fact that she was living my dream, she grew on me for sure! She’s so silly n Kara plays her so well! Also, the fact that we at least get one female character who actually works with the newsies is awesome considering yk,,female newsies existed 😻 (gonna be totally honest Ik nothing abt the actual strike 😕)

That being said, I still think Dentons existence should at least be acknowledged yk 😭❓ Take writing fanfics for example, I’m aware most people write abt the musical, meaning denton isn’t actually in it, which I totally get! Whilst I do like denton, I (as well as most people probably) prefer katherine, but I still definitely enjoy reading or watching stuff abt him, as I can still appreciate that he was the original reporter character, and some people prefer the movie or have only watched the movie, meaning they may like him more as that’s what they’re used to! I absolutely understand liking denton, however saying that katherine is sub par, and saying the fact she is a woman is historically inaccurate is ridiculous 💀 (and that’s saying smth coming from me, considering I know absolutely nothing abt the actual strike n even I know thats wrong 😭) Katherine is a great character, and she doesn’t have to be your favourite to see that! So anyone hating on her or just straight up being an asshole by saying some completely inaccurate and frankly pretty fucking offensive stuff, pls kindly fuck off 🥰 Katherine absolutely does not have to be your favourite character, and you don’t have to prefer her over denton, you just need to be able to share ur opinion without being a dick and not talk absolutely bs!

This one is an Anastasia-Newsies crossover that is already partially completed on AO3!!

I wrote some stuff for Merlin way back when that I still love a lot, but a lot of my earlier fandom stuff is lost to the annals of time, or at least LJ migration. I remember being very fond of some Hornblower fic I wrote. I think most recently, it's the Don/Paddy and the Dragon Age AU series, they're both worlds I'm enjoying spending time in a lot.

Where was Kloppman in Livesies? Really, where?

I wanna know how all the newsies characters were created. Was someone reading A Christmas Carol and was like ‘yes, we need teenage Tiny Tim!’

I noticed they have the same audio of the kid yelling ‘c’mon move it! move it!’ later at the end.

Why did they cut out the ‘takes a smile as sweet as butter?’ bit?

At first I was confused about the woman singing in the background but over time I feel that she brings the idea that not all the newsies are orphans

So it’s raining while they’re having dinner, then it stopped when they're on the fire escape, and the ground is dusty enough so when Jack does his Santa Fe ‘dance’ he doesn’t get all muddy? Huh.

Only thing about Sarah is that I feel her New York accent could’ve been better.

I wanna know who made the birthday cake. One of the cast or crew maybe?

Why is Spot Colon’s slingshot never brought up in Livesies?

Ok when I first watched this I didn’t know what to expect from Spot Colon but I remember that as soon as I saw him I had a crush on him instantly. 🥰

People always make fun of Spot’s height, whether it be 92sies or Livesies. But being a short person myself and knowing other short people I can honestly say that short people definitely can be scary! Seriously I’ve scared more people than I can count even if I don’t mean to, so imagine Spot Colon intentionally trying to be scary! How in the world does nobody notice the newsies hiding out around the refuge or when Davey rides on the back of the carriage? There’s cops literally 10 feet from them and they still don’t see a group of kids?

Even when Jack’s yelling he’s still less angry then Jeremy’s angry Jack.

It doesn’t take going through a whole day sulking and getting yelled at by Katherine for 92sies Jack to change his mind, it only takes the Delancys beating up the Jacobs for him to finally say no.

I like how they show all the different kids at odds and ends jobs, as well as how some kids back then didn’t know how to read.

Only thing is I wish they would’ve talked about the details with the deal with Pulitzer

Overall I’d want to know what the original newsies would think of this. I mean just imagine the ones from 1899 watching this and thinking ‘I don’t think we ever did this much singing and dancing.’

And now to take a moment for the 92sies who did not make it into Livesies: Snipeshooter, Boots, Bumlets, PieEater, Snoddy, Itey, Snitch, Swifty, Jake, Dutchy, Skittery, Snaps, Tumbler, and Flipper. They will be missed. Instead they will be replaced by new newsies that are far more stupid and annoying, but on the bright side are very good dancers. 😔

I feel like 92sies isn’t talked about as much because it’s more dated and not as recent. When people mention that current stars like Ben Cook are in Livesies then everyone talks about it like it’s the best thing since sliced bread. But when people say Christian Bale is in 92sies then they just say ‘oh yeah, he’s Batman’ and just leave it at that. Just because 92sies doesn’t have the A+ Broadway dancing doesn’t mean it’s not a good musical,

My first is my baby, the light of my life, How To Keep Your Head Above Water When You Want To Sink. It’s my current longest fic, and while updates on it are slow at the moment, I love it with all my heart. Steddie slowburn, lots of angst and emotion, super fun to write!!

My second is probably Just How Quickly Worlds Burn Down, which is an angsty Crows fic in which Wylan gets kidnapped.

God okay next is probably 6 Queers and A Jace, simply because it’s my low stress project and it’s been really fun to write something simple and humorous for once. Also the reception on it had been great!! (new chapter soon I promise)

I’m gonna throw in an unpublished work, my Newsies modern day au. It is still in the process of being written and edited, but it has been an absolute pleasure to write and brainstorm ideas. Also it’s one of the first fics i’ve “plotted” fully, and the notes for it are really amusing lmao.

And last one will be In Vino Veritas, my Crows truth serum fic. Bc at the time it was my first big jump into the SoC fandom as a writer, and i really enjoyed making it. I put a lot of effort into it.

ok i want to preface that this is not fleshed out! i don’t know how things happen! i don’t know why things happen! i don’t know and i want to keep it that way @jack-kellys

but ok here we go. a fucked up dystopian thing but jack is a pawn in the game.

i’m picturing,, futuristic, the world has ended and people are starting over and trying to find normalcy but the wrong people force themselves into power. there’s a call for order and a new way of life.

theres the Bad Elites bc the world kind of ended and the wrong people were able to gain power during this big rebuilding thing and the newsies are basically a rebel group, jack as the leader, jack gets trapped and pulitzer is evil and bad things happen and then jack is basically a puppet to be controlled ! i think it’s fun

some more things:

jack is the leader. charlie is the medic. race is the getaway driver for missions. al is the weapons guy. al and race are dating; jack, race, and charlie are brothers; al looks up to jack.

the other newsies are There, i just dont care about them

davey is. whooooooo ok davey is a big thing to me. give me a minute

anyway jack is captured! hes kept for a few days. drugged, tortured, what have you. he’s implanted with a chip that fucks with his brain- when it’s activated, he hears nothing but a sharp ringing, its an out of body experience, and he can See what’s happening but he can’t actually control himself or stop it.

the first time it happens is a few days after he escapes (which is too easy- he realizes after that pulitzer *lets* him escape).

hes sitting at dinner. he’s hurting and he’s hearing ringing and albert comes to jack’s side to help him.

he slashes albert’s throat on impulse, and albert dies at his feet.

cue everything going to shit. race trying to kill jack, charlie has to step in, jack begs for someone to kill him, race tries again, eventually they lock jack in a room with windows in the compound and jack refuses to let *anyone* in.

side note bc @roideny said this and i freaked out: race sitting and watching jack lose his mind bc he knows that jack didnt kill albert- everyone knows jack is being controlled, they just dont know how or why- and race just ,, silently crying every time the chip is activated bc jack is screaming, and writhing in pain, and its what makes him remember that *jack* didn’t kill albert.

anyway moving on!

obviously davey is in this.

davey is one of pulitzers guys but hes being controlled by the same chip thing, but its Constant and Controlled instead of sporadic like jack’s. the gang capturing davey during an ambush or smth and charlie immediately knocking him the fuck out to do any sort of Finding And Removing The Chip just to prove to jack that it’s safe and he can do it

so davey is just a guy

like. an upper level guy i feel like, hes pretty important to pulitzers cause as a soldier type thing, but hes not important enough for people to go looking once he comes up missing. davey is just a frontman in an army serving people who dontgive a shit if hes dead or alive.

but tbh i think this is also ,, rlly good mind control territory bc davey hasn’t been Davey in so long. davey hasn’t even been David. davey has been Soldier, or #0347, or whatever the fuck people are calling him, but he has no name, no personality- he’s a terrified fifteen year old trapped in his own body for six years until hes suddenly a *monster* at 21 who has killed more people than he can ever count

they get the chip out of davey, so they know they can get the chip out of jack, and its just. yeah. its yeah and its so good

davey trying to live life as Himself for the first time in six years, jack trying to overtake pulitzer, things happen and plot happens yadda yadda they win and its good

ohoho don’t mind if i do!!

so. jack and race are my roy and jamie, because of course they are <3 and yes it’s hockey instead of football bc as rizz pointed out not too long ago, i already throw canadianisms into my dialogue without noticing, so now i can really lean into it lmaoo

jack is the captain of a fictional NHL team called the hamilton bobcats - he’s 34 years old and nearing the end (though he’d never admit that) of an incredibly successful career. he was once one of the biggest names in hockey, “the next gretzky” as people called him when he was first drafted, and he’s got stanley cup wins and olympic medals and everything you can think of under his belt. he’s also got a hot wife (kath) and 2 adorable kids and a mansion and a lamborghini, so he likes to think he’s doing pretty well.

race, on the other hand, is 19 - he’s just some kid from small-town alberta, still in the junior leagues, but he’s the #1 nhl draft prospect bc he’s got an unnatural level of talent for scoring and absolutely crazy stats… and everyone’s calling him “the next jack kelly” ;)

after a very shitty season (which definitely doesn’t have to do with jack being past his prime, no way), the bobcats manage to get first pick in the draft lottery, so of COURSE they sign race! pulitzer, the owner of the team, had been ready to stop at nothing to get him in a contract, so it’s lovely that it worked out so easily.

jack and race clash immediately, as soon as the new season starts - jack is a captain with a huge emphasis on the team culture of mutual respect and caring that he’s built over the years… and race is not used to that type of atmosphere at all, so he comes in, guns blazing, ready to be the best and fight his way to the top. he’s arrogant and rude, and it’s infuriating that he’s so goddamn good at playing and scoring goals that he can get away with his bad attitude. the other rookies (al and buttons and finch) flock to him, desperate to impress and get on his good side, and it throws a major wrench into how jack likes to run things.

cue plenty of arguing between those two, a sprace plot that i have yet to figure out the details of (except that spot plays for the habs bc ill jump on any chance to throw quebecois spot into another fic), and some eventual realization that maybe they can get along - likely spurred on by kath saying something along the lines of “jackie, you realize this whole rivalry thing you have going is with a child, right? he’s just a teenager,” prompting jack to reluctantly come to terms with the fact that all race actually needs is a mentor <3

#so jack is a less mean and angry roy kent #and race is a younger and slightly less obnoxious jamie tartt #and they’ll get along eventually but god damn if it doesn’t take a lot of fighting first #also. race has a shitty dad who pushed him way too hard to be great and im envisioning some kind of emotional breakdown mid-season #where it suddenly clicks for jack that this poor kid is just scared and needs someone to be gentle with him #hockey au

first thought: crutchie POV through the strike and the refuge. i think the mentality of the title really encapsulates his character tbh, since initially he was very decisive on just paying what they had to to survive- very realist, grounded pov. but something else about charlie is that he's sort of easily caught up in an idea when it's from someone he trusts (santa fe, and the strike as a whole). hope is dangerous because it's powerful and sweeping and crutchie knows that even though he falls into it because like. damn. believing in something feels powerful too, and getting to be active in that belief–striking, standing with his friends, going against the rich folk against them–is more rewarding than life has ever been before.

and then he pays the price for it. not jack's hope, or davey's strategy, but crutchie's belief pays for it, and he's taken away from it, literally. hope always sneaks up on him and bites him in the ass but he'd be damned before letting go of it if he rly believes in it. ugh. uksies gonna get me back into canon era fics i swear

second thought: definitely some sort of dystopian where all the newsies are split into little survival teams under a horrific and spreading government. star warsy without the magic and just the guerilla/grassroots fight against fascism. adults are caught up in the politics of it and trying to solve it through that but it's very clearly.... this is a fight we have to win yk. also i think i'd toss this into a steampunk aesthetic because i think that and bare-bones fighting tactics go hand in hand very nicely... dumpster-dive weaponry and invention is very newsies and their slingshots.

not to be dramatic but it would definitely start with esther and mayer being arrested (they're in grassroots politics) and davey and les having to escape so they aren't arrested too (or worse!! they have valuable information about rebellion and contacts and etc). they meet jack, charlie, and race while the trio is doing recon so davey & les get pulled into a chase and into jack charlie and race's world. medda's theater is an underground base. jack is an inventor "rather than" an artist (they are the SAME but just different MEDIUMS ok). charlie has a kickass prosthetic that jack made for him that sort of catches on itself sometimes so he still needs a mobility aid until jack can create something better. race has been running information for the resistance without jack knowing. the "strike" that davey offhandedly mentions is that guerilla tactic, which snowballs into small disruptions with big publicity, which draws in katherine- who is a reporter in this still and would totally be held hostage if anyone knew who her father was.

im sure there's an au like it out there (pretty hard not to align a plot like newsies to a more dramatic theme like fascism)...but like lemme try my hand at it the aesthetic would be so good. steampunk new york...say less rn

newsies: oh then I guess it's a party?

and then they tap dance

ok member that piece of exposition about jack painting stuff for medda? he's doing that. he's painting santa fe when all of a sudden hOW ABOUT LETTIN A PAL KNOW YOURE ALIVE its davey <3 and kath and les are close behind and *8 year old voice* 🎶 les has a girlfirend! and they're like ok we have an idea. what if we hold a rally at the theater for the newsies and jack is like FUCK NO???? PEOPLE ARE??? HURT???? *cue "lighten up, nobody died*

pulitzer: oh also shut down the strike or i’ll hurt all of you badly. here’s some money :)

and then he sends his goons morris and oscar who i’ve somehow managed to leave unmentioned until now and theyre like ok we can do whatever we want with you. so we’re going to make you sleep on a printing press. because nothing is worse than sleeping uncomfortably;

ok so now we’re at the theater for the rally and the brooklyn boys are like hi. we are here. we just now this very moment only like two seconds ago very recently found out about this very new and unheard of strike. but we’re here now. so hi. and then they’re like ok where the fuck is jack. and then jack arrives and hes like ok okok so. if we disband the union, pulitzer wont raise the price for three years. and obviously he gets booed off the goddamn stage bc wtf bro. so he. runs off to the roof of the lodging house and theres katharine!

jack: what the fuck are you doing in my room

kathy: umm. specs did it not me

jack: put away my plot devices drawings

kathy: are they the refuge?

jack:.......maybe

anyways they get into an argument and then threaten to punch each other and then they kiss and then they sing their love for each other and devise a plan to create a pamphlet to rouse all of the working kids of new york and theyre like ok where should we print it. and then jack remembers the printing press he was made to sleep on. and gets an idea.

so. they go to the printing press and print the papers and sing a rousing song about changing the world once and for all with a little help from sons of famous people or whatever. then, roosevelt gets a copy and shuts down the whole parade and pulitzer is like ok but. my pride. and so jack is like hmm. ok so what if you lower the price by half, and buy back any papers we cant sell.and hes like ok deal and then jack initiates the spit shake thing adn pulitzer is like thats fucking gross and jack goes thats jsut business so pulitzer does it. and then they go back to newsieing around but this time jack and kath are a couple :)
