2023 Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster Ride Review
Photographed along Route 66, throughout Nevada and Arizona in the United States.
Triumph’s iconic Bonneville lineup has been around for a long time. It was the British manufacturer's take on 50s motorcycle Americana and holds a special place in history as one of the original café racers. The first time I sat on the 2023 Bonneville Speedmaster, I wanted to pull out a comb, dip it in a can of grease lightning, slick my hair back, and throw a black leather jacket on with a pair of vintage bottom-cuffed blue jeans. This bike takes you back. Back to the classic rebellious biker films of the 50s and 60s. Triumph’s Bonneville was a cool bike. Cool enough for Marlon Brando, James Dean, Steve McQueen, and the Fonz in their prime. That’s pretty freakin’ cool.
After coming out of a 60s motorcycle film flashback, I saddled up my travel bag onto the Speedmaster, popped my collar, and shifted into gear like a rebel without a cause. The destination? I was headed to the Mojave Desert, through Las Vegas and Arizona on Classic Route 66. Afterward, I’d put this Bonneville to the ultimate test on what is known as the ‘Tail of the Dragon of the West Coast’.
Check out the full ride review.

Boondocking in arizona

Boondocking in arizona for free#
BLM’s Kingman Field Office administers this area. There are also several good pull-out areas off old Route 66 heading north towards Oatman. North of town on old Route 66, about 3 miles, is an extensive BLM (Bureau of Land Management) ATV and off-road vehicle area. Patton’s troops of WWII trained in this area. The town has RV camping facilities, including an RV dump, fuel, groceries, water, trash restaurants, museum, and post office. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Lake Havasu Field Office manages RV camping in this area.
Boondocking in arizona for free#
Surrounded by BLM administered lands, Bouse has virtually unlimited places for free RV camping. The Prescott National Forest manages public lands in this area. There are many lovely free RV boondocking sites in this area. South of Ash Fork along highway 89 is numerous USFS (US Forest Service) access roads. The Yuma BLM Field Office administers this area. Very isolated! There is also BLM public land surrounding AJO available for free RV camping. Free RV camping locations are primitive, which means there are no RV hookups.Ĭlick On The Town Name For Free Arizona RV Camping LocationsĬabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge – Free RV camping information about the Refuge, remote access, and necessary permits. The following list is just a sample of free RV camping possibilities. State parks, US Army Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, and more allow free RV camping. If we had had warmer weather we definitely would’ve launched the kayak and SUP.Free Arizona RV camping is available on public lands administered by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and the USFS (US Forest Service). I’m guessing it got out and couldn’t find a way back in? Regardless, we’re glad to seemingly be rid of it!Īs mentioned, we had water access right from our site and the river looked pretty dang inviting. We got a lot of great suggestions for catching mice in the comments section of our YouTube channel so if you’re looking for ideas, go check it out! Oddly enough, we stopped hearing or seeing signs of the second mouse and now, many weeks later, there’s still no further sign of it. The other bit of excitement was that we caught a mouse in the RV (we use a humane trap baited with peanut butter) and heard another one but it wouldn’t go into the trap. For some scale, look for me in my turquoise shirt Geoglyphs are difficult to date but these are estimated to be between 450-2,000 years old. On the ground you don’t necessarily get a good sense of it but there are placards with images on site letting you know what you’re looking at…and of course we had to put up the drone to really get the bird’s eye view. Other noteworthy items from this visit were that on our way to this boondocking site we visited the Blythe Intaglios, which are geoglyphs! They’re artworks created in the ground to be visible from the sky. There were a wide variety of birds to be seen and it was highly enjoyable to see the massive groups in flight I’m guessing we saw SO many birds because we were here during the winter, so keep that in mind during your visit. There is a short walking trail within the auto loop that takes you to a blind, where you can get a closer view. There’s a 3-mile auto tour in the refuge that allows you to see some really fantastic wildlife – mostly birds but we also saw deer and a coyote. If you can break away from the peaceful sights and sounds of the river, you should be sure to stop at nearby Cibola National Wildlife Refuge. There are thick bushes lining the river so not all sites have a river view We saw a nice big fire ring at another spot right on the water, and the very southern end of the lot, so we thought why not! This gave us a lot of privacy, with thick bushes on either side of us, and there was water access right from the site – although the climb down to it was quite steep. When we arrived there was only one other camper and instead of the pull through spaces, they had actually chosen a spot right next to the water. There’s a vault toilet at the north end of the gravel lot and the public beach is at that end as well. This definitely makes the list of one of our favorite campsitesĪs you pull into this camping area, you’ll see 6 pull through spaces, each with a covered picnic table, fire ring, and trash can. We paid $10 to fill our water at nearby Karl’z Country Store.23-29, 2018 and had mild weather with some windy days This is free camping on Fish & Wildlife Service land with trash cans, a vault toilet, fire pits and picnic tables. This spot is just a few miles from the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, on the California/Arizona border. We hadn’t quite figured out where we were going to be for Christmas this year but when Brad mentioned a free boondocking spot on the Colorado River I was quick to sign on.

Souvenir postcard from Cool Springs, a venerable roadside stop on the Oatman Highway, which is the most picturesque remnant of Route 66.  It runs roughly from Holbrook, Arizona through Oatman where it turns more southerly toward Golden Shores and the California state line.  On a more recent drive along this section of road I stopped at the renovated Cool Springs, which is in quite a scenic location.  I bought this postcard and a soda and even got change from my $10 bill...all in the name of historic restoration, however: today’s Cool Springs is a careful reconstruction of the original shown above, which was completely destroyed as of 2001.
This is a fresh scan, although it loses some sharpness in Vuescan’s moiré effect mitigation.

Oatman, AZ-
Located near the city of Kingman, Az, along the famous Route 66 highway, lies a small, yet busy, one street ghost town named Oatman. Although once a mining town, many decades later, the town has been abandoned by most people; with the miners leaving behind their most useful tool- donkeys. Once the mining operations were shut down by the government, the cart pulling donkeys were set free to roam the town, and even generations later, the little burro herd is still there! Every morning the donkeys descend from the nearby mountains and hang around the town all day to be fed and cared for by remaining townspeople and tourists.
The donkeys have become such an important icon in the town and you can see it clearly! Most of the buildings in the town are “donkey inspired” having punny names to go with the theme. These buildings are all mostly tourist oriented with leather work merchandise, clothing, jewelry, gems, knick knacks and even a few antique stores. There is an American BBQ style restaurant located in the center of the line of buildings but, unfortunately I ran out of time and couldn’t eat there, so I’m not sure how the food is. At certain times of the day, a few members of the town put on a wild west cowboy showdown in the middle of the street, so if you hear some yelling, be sure to get outside quickly to watch- it’s quite entertaining! (But I also advise to know when the next few shows start just so you can leave before it begins again! Since the town is only one road and the show blocks the road the traffic can get a little backed up on the way out) The town also had a small jail that was converted to a little museum. Once again, I was unfortunately short on time and therefore couldn’t see it myself, but I recommend checking it out if you want to know the history of the town a little more.
Now for the main attraction: the donkeys! When I was there and from my observation there seemed to be about maybe 8-12 donkeys roaming around the town. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot one of the baby donkeys who are so unbelievably adorable!!! With the babys you might also notice a little piece of paper taped to their heads and might find it a bit strange. But no worries, they are little signs that state “STOP Don’t feed me, I’m nursing!” Most of the shops in town sell some bags of alfalfa squares to hand feed the donkeys if you wish to do so. I recommend arriving early morning for most interaction with the donkeys because as the day goes on, the donkeys get full from the treats and no longer care to eat any- so don’t be offended if you try to offer some around noon and they don’t take it! There are also signs around the town that advise people to not bring carrots or apples and only feed them the treats that the shops sell, so please be respectful and don’t bring any outside food. If you want more information about any of the donkeys whether it be about their daily routines, names, or best feeding times, there is a small donkey information center you can find along the shops. Overall they are very friendly and will let you pet them and approach them. But with that being said, they are, at the end of the day, wild animals and if you plan on being around them often, I advise anyone to quickly learn the body language/ facial expressions of a donkey as it will help determine whether its safe to approach or be left alone. Please respect the animals.
Overall, I think it is a nice little ghost town to kill a couple of hours in. I don’t recommend driving there to spend a weekend or something since there isn’t much to do. It’s more of a destination to stop by on the way, pet a burro, buy a souvenir to support the town, and carry on.

The Clones as Route 66 Stops
Order 66? Never heard of em! As an oklahoma girl born and raised in a small town off Route 66, this one has been a long time a comin’ From Illinois to California, or Coruscant to the Outer Rim and beyong, there is always time to stop and see the worlds (or galaxys) largest rubber band ball. Route 66 (aka US 66) is a historic highway in the United States extending from Chicago to Los Angeles. It crossed much of the American Midwest, Great Plains, and Southwest. Although US Highway 66 no longer exists, you can still "get your kicks" on the path it took through the United States on other highways and roads.
Rex-Elmers Bottle Tree Ranch, Oro Grande California--- A really cool stop in California, the trees made of hundreds of glass bottles. Rex could make one in about a week with how crazy this vacations making him. Echo- National Route 66 Historical Museum, Elk City Oklahoma--- The National Museum of Route 66 is an old town set up with many cool exhibits and old buildings. Perfect for the little history nerd Fives- Gemini Giant, Willmington Illinois--- A statue of a man in a space helmet holding his favorite spaceship he wants to fly. Hm, sounds like Umbara doesnt it fives? Jesse- Worlds Largest Katchup/ Catsup/Ketchup Bottle, --- Collinsville Illinois. Literally the weirdest but most fantastic little random stop is this Catsup bottle in illinois. Its even on a pillar Kix- The Blue Swallow Motel, Tucumcari New Mexico.---- A fancy roadside motel for a fancy boy Tupp- Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo Texas.--- a bunch of cadillacs buried into the ground that you can spraypaint on without getting into trouble? Good way to leave your mark and artistic expression! Dogma- End of The Trail, Santa Monica California--- Thank Maker this vacation is over Hardcase- Uranus Fudge Factory , Missouri--- This man would want to stop here simply for the tshirt you can get that says the fudge from Uranus is best Coric- The Singing Road, Albuquerque New Mexico --- a road that sings to you when you follow the law is perfect for this guy. Bly- Muffler Man Hotdog Statue, Atlanta Illinois --- strictly for the Bly mun. Im sorry. But a really funny statue of a guy caressing a hot dog. 99- Worlds Sceond Largest Rocking Chair, Fanning Missouri---- This man deserves to kick it back in the worlds second largest rocking chair. Cody- Standin’ on The Corner, Winslow  Arizona--- Okay so this one is actually really cool. The Eagles “Take it Easy” song mentioned this town in the song and they owned it, dedicating an entire corner to it and turning it into a park. Waxer and Boil- Cars inspired town, Galena Kansas--- A cool place for families with kids, The town is old and rustic, typical route 66 fashion, but with cars memorobilia and souvenirs  Wolffe- Petrified Forest, Holbrook Arizona--- Everything about this place is cool. Also, another cool arizona stop to match is the worlds largest perserved crater  Boost and Sinker- Wild Burros, Oatman Arizona--- Everyone wants to see a wild ass on vacation. Oatman Arizona has a ton of wild donkeys running around waiting to greet travelers! Hunter-Big Texan 72 Oz Steak Dinner at the Big Texan Ranch, Amarillo Texas--- A big Texas Sized welcome for a Texas Sized man. If you eat the whole steak in an hour or two the meal is free! Wrecker- Whale of Catoosa, Catoosa Oklahoma--- Whimsical and loud tourist stop and swimming spot in Oklahoma. Tech- Helium Molecule Statue and Time Capsule, Amarillo Texas--- Amarillo was once one of the top distributing places for Helium. They set up a huge hellium molecule and placed multiple time capsules in it to open every few years as a reminder. Crosshair- 2nd Amendment Cowboy, Amarillo Texas--- Nothing screams “ahh no my gun” Like a gigiantic cutout cowboy statue holding a plaque of the countrys second amendment.
Route 66 Roadtrip Superlatives
Most likely to have to go to the bathroom 90 times in one hour- Tup Most likely to get left at a gas station by accident- Coric Most likely to get left at a gas station on purpose- Tech Best Sleeper- Wolffe Most likely to get a ticket for terrible driving- Wrecker Smelliest travelers- Boost and Sinker Most likely to turn this car the hell around and go all the way home if you don’t behave- CodyFor real though guys. If you ever have any time to make these stops, they can be amazing. They may not look like much to you, but to the people in some of these small towns its their pride and joy and to see people stopping and appreciating a part of our home is a feeling your can’t really describe.

Further east along the Oatman Highway from Ed’s Camp is Cool Springs Camp, another vintage stop from the heyday of old Route 66.  It was a pile of rubble some 20 years ago but has been rebuilt and now serves as a roadside stop and photo op.  The Burton Frasher postcard below shows what the place looked like some 80 years ago (squinting recommended).
