everyone screaming about bi obi-wan being canon now as if matthew stover didn’t already give us bi obi-wan 17 years ago in the revenge of the sith novelization with this gem of a scene where anakin assumes that obi-wan was secretly seeing and seducing a male senator for information:

but in all seriousness, obi-wan's assertion here that "power alone is no credit to you" is so important imho to unlock the heart of the entire jedi worldview: the fact that a jedi possesses great power is not particularly respectable on its own.
what matters for obtaining a higher rank in the order is having patience, self-discipline, discernment, awareness of the big picture and one's part inside it, with modesty and commitment to helping others—that's what makes a master, not just skill with the force and capacity for violence.
anakin may have mastered many of the jedi arts like lightsaber combat and telekinesis, but he doesn't think or act like a mature jedi. his power alone does him no credit, not without a jedi's selflessness to guide it. imho in peacetime he would still be a padawan, not a knight, let alone a master.

Finished Reading Padawan
These are just some little facts/snippets throughout the book I really liked, really along the lines of temple life.
Spoilers for Padawan below!
┉┉┉◤▲◥┉┉┉
Obi-Wan tugs on his padawan braid when he is anxious
Bolla Ropal (the Jedi that was killed guarding the holocron in TCW) was Obi-Wan's childhood frienemy. The two played pranks on each other.
Obi-Wan paces outside Qui-Gon's chamber doors as he's trying to figure out what to say what he needs to.
Obi-Wan feels most at peace, most calm, when he is practicing lightsaber forms and says he could do it all day and never bore of it.
Jedi specialize in certain fields, such as communication with animals, and if such a conflict arises based in that Jedi's field, they are sent to help
Jedi who are ready to take have a padawan meditate and the force guides them to who they're meant to train, leading to shared interests.
The temple has several dining halls. There is a padawan meal hall and therefore one for the other ranks. They offer such a variety of food Obi-Wan said one could always find something new to try. And I could've made this up but I'm also pretty sure they said the dining hall for padawans was almost always open, so one was always be able to get a meal.
Some Jedi Masters put a table and chairs in their rooms so they can share a meal with their padawan in their personal space
Qui-Gon doesn't even have an extra chair in his room.
Ships can be requested/reserved down in the hangar. A padawan is allowed to do this without approval from their master (Obi-Wan is told by Qui-Gon to do do but is not directly confronted when he does it alone).
Talking and communicating with animals is actually one of the harder skills to learn and master as a Jedi, so many opt not to. Meaning Ezra's ability to communicate with animals as well as he does is not something all Jedi could do, especially for his age
Nautolans, can live outside of water (we do know this) but since they are an aquatic species, there is a constant strain on their gills and results in them being in pain if out of water for too long.
Obi-Wan thinks Kit Fisto is really strong, he notes Fisto does not seem to be affected by this.
Obi-Wan notes some of his padawan friends have dabbled in physical relationships. But he sees it has an obstacle not as a temptation, feeling that, kissing for example, was a betrayal of himself and the Jedi. He wonders if he'd ever get to a point where it does not feel like that.
┉┉┉◤▲◥┉┉┉
Honestly this book was a really cute read and the planet it takes place on was very captivating. I really liked how Kirsten White writes Qui-Gon too and her references that any prequel fan would love catching.

He breathed in, and he breathed out, and he felt how that breath mingled with the air around him. It landed on the feathery leaves of the pitcher plants and they curled around it, pulling it in.
couldn't get this imagery out of my head after finishing Padawan by Kiersten White. it was such a satisfying moment built up to in all the throes and worries that run through the core of the novel. 💞

The fact that Ahsoka didn't want to be Anakin's Padawan because she was scared of him kills me every time.
She tought he was distant and all she knew was that he would always won the battles, that he was the Chosen One. No one but Obi Wan truly knew him.
She was even shocked when she found out he was going to be her Master: she wasn't going to be able of being as good as him, she could never be good enough for him. And yet, she was able of it, and she could.
Anakin wasn't only her master, but her older brother at the end of the day.

Fans: Qui Gon never looked out for Obi he was always selfish.
The novel:
Tumblr media
You're telling me that, Qui Gon was an unacceptable Master that he would rather put down his own life so Obi wouldn't have to endure any pain? Oh yeah he was really selfish and horrible.

i haven't seen anyone post the excerpt onto tumblr yet so here it is (src)
(image description under the cut)
[image 1 id: a photo taken of one of the pages from the padawan novel (transcribed below):
"Oh, I know!" Obi-Wan smiled at the warning, touched that Casul didn't want Obi-Wan getting his hopes up. "I can't form attachments like that, anyway." Couldn't he, though, if he didn't go back? Was that something he would even want? It had always been so forbidden, even thinking about it was like holding his hand right next to a lightsaber blade. He knew some of his friends had dabbled in physical relationships—suspected Siri would have been open to it, had he ever wanted to—but it had always seemed like an obstacle, not a temptation.
"And besides," Obi-Wan said, rushing to change the subject for himself more than anyone, "I would never want to be in a relationship with a leader. Too close to politicians or royalty. I'm sure if I ever fell in love, it would be with someone calm. Peaceful. Easy to get along with."
"So you want someone who doesn't challenge you."
Obi-Wan laughed, then shrugged. "I don't know what I want, if we're being honest."
Casul mirrored his shrug. "Not many choices around here. I don't think love is in my future, either, and I'm fine with that. As long as I have the Power to keep my family safe, that's enough for me. Though I will admit I've been curious about kissing and why Audj and Zae-Brii enjoy it so much. So if you're ever curious, too, let me know."

[image 2 id: another photo taken of one of the pages from the padawan novel, continuing the passage (transcribed below)
Obi-Wan blushed. "I will. Let you know, I mean. Not that I will do that, right now, with you. Or anyone." Would he ever get to a point where kissing someone felt like anything less than a betrayal of himself and the Jedi? And if he did get to that point, who would he want to kiss? The Lenahrans were confident and charismatic, which attractive. But he couldn't imagine just...kissing any of them.
Maybe he didn't want to be with any of them but rather to be more like each of them.
Or maybe he wanted to kiss all of them. Not Mem, though, because he had a feeling that would upset her very much.
He wasn't going to kiss any of them, regardless. Everything on Lenahra seemed simple and felt impossibly complicated, and that would doubtless make it all worse.

I just finished reading Padawan and had big feels about teenage Obi-Wan 😭😭😭
Padawan is the second best Star Wars book I have ever read. Am I biased about how much I love teenage Obi-Wan being a good kid who desperately wants to help and who loves the Jedi and the galaxy and all the people in it? Am I biased because it has the most hilarious stories about Obi-Wan's group of hellion friends, like them trying to toast a block of cheese with a lightsaber and likely making an unholy mess, while Yaddle refers to them as "a merry band of brats"? Am I biased because I love the descriptions of the planet Lehnara and how beautiful it sounds and the message of how powerful abilities come with responsibility and that, yes, attachment actually is bad? MAYBE SO BUT I'M (WE'RE) STILL RIGHT, IT IS THE SECOND BEST STAR WARS BOOK EVER. (Sorry, but nothing is ever unseating Stover's Revenge of the Sith novelization.)

After reading the "AHSOKA" novel by E.K. Johnston, I couldn't help but feel that the cover art didn't quite match the vibe that the book conveyed. While Ahsoka is always portrayed as a badass character, the novel kind of revealed a different side of her, which I believe should have been represented on the cover to better, you could say, reflect the story's essence. But I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing Ahsoka's journey as she courageously overcame her survivor's guilt and found her place in the galaxy (kind of).

I have to say, I finally picked up the Jedi Quest series and yikes on trikes, nothing on EARTH could prepare me for how desperately I want to pick 14-yr old Anakin up and just shake him.
Every single time this kid opens his mouth, he shoves his foot in it.
Tumblr media
On the one hand, could it be the inconsistent writing and the target age-range limiting the narrative? Sure. Does it make Anakin any more likeable? Absolutely not.
In other news, I would die for Tru, Darra, and Ferus. They are *adorable.* And Siri slow-roasting Obi-Wan over an open flame at any given opportunity is my new favourite thing.
Siri: I would die for you.
Also Siri, in the same sentence: get wrecked, bitch.
