Singnsong's writing advice

Singnsong hides little snippets of writing advice throughout ORV. The one that has helped me the most was when KDJ asked HSY if an author can really control everything in the story and her response was something along the lines of:

"The author doesn't know everything and can't control everything. After a character is created, they begin to act on their own. All the author can do is create the setting, and from then on it's up to the character to decide how the story goes."

After I followed this advice, writing became SO EASY.

I used to struggle with writing anything past the 5k word count, and now here I am at 60k words in my docs for a single AU. And I'm still going, my inspiration hasn't run out. It's unbelievable.

It's like stepping into their shoes for a second, looking at their skills, inventory, desperation, and they seem to find a way out of it on their own.

The thought process goes a little like, chatting with the character themselves inside your head. Like:

Me: Ok, KDJ is back. What are you going to do? YJK: I'm going to kill him. Me: Ok, the stage is set and you did it! He's a complicated guy to beat these days and it took so f long. What now? YJK: I'm going to marry him. Me: .... what.

or

Me: Ok, the protagonist had his turn, but you're my favourite so I'm shifting the flow a bit to give you a chance to shine. What are you going to do now that KDJ is back? HSY: I already did everything I wanted to do. He's back. He's happy. As long as it stays that way, that's all that matters. Me: ...wtf... I mean, that kind of pure love is exactly why I ship Doksoo SO MUCH but still!! Can't you pls PLS decide to give me some fanservice?? HSY: You really want me to write everything for you?

or

Me: Can you believe these two?? Say something, PLS. I know you're going to deny how much you love them but I KNOW. KDJ: *after 20k years of heavily dissociating* This is all just a story. A chapter I'm on. A moment ago, I couldn't even remember which regression turn I originally came from... and that's how it will be in the future as well. If they want me to be happy, fine, I will be while I'm reading this passage. This is the story I love the most, you see. If there is a wish I can fulfill, even for a brief moment in this eternity... Me: omfg!!!!!!

...and then you, as the author, just make up a 'setting' (a situation) that bulldozes their desires/preconceptions to force them to act. And you have this conversation with them again in you head. As long as you have a good enough grasp of 'who' and 'what' they are and their 'abilities/skills', they really do come up with the story for you.

But to keep a sense of direction for the story, you need to keep a vague goal in mind for the ending.

And then if you can't decide on a goal, then there's another piece of advice from Singnsong that I got:

"The story and the characters exist to tell that one reader a message."

What's the narrative in your story? What are you trying to tell the person on the other side of the wall? This will help you pick out a path or a goal.

One thing is for certain, you will survive.

* Remember, characters can disagree with your narrative and decide otherwise.

Writing gets easier the less you try to control it, and the more you simply try to describe how a character would react to a given situation. 10/10 thank you Singnsong!!

Rapid fire Fairy Tail rewatch thoughts. May or May not expand upon each point later on.

THIS IS LONG AS HELL BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHEN TO SHUT UP.

for reference, I've reached tartaros so far. I am aware of the canon happenings after that tho.

The female cast is so good idc what anyone says obviously the fanservice is awful BUT I will say, in the earlier arcs, it actually felt decently balanced because of Gray's whole stripping shtick + Natsu's cunty vest wasn't particularly modest either LOL.

Erza is such a wonderful character. I've seen comments that she goes downhill like 100yq onwards but. Um. 100yq characterisation.... that's a whole post of its own.

I never expected to like Lucy so much. idc that it takes her like 200 episodes to win a fight solo because when she FINALLY DOES IT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF THE SERIES BY FAR. characters who's defining traits r kindness and compassion <33

Interesting how Lucy is the traditional shounen protag (underdog, skills develop overtime) because the rest of team Natsu sans Wendy were all like ... already kinda OP established mages even at the beginning.

I know there are debates ab who really is the protag and imo the narrative skews towards Natsu more BUT. it's bizarre how unexplored he is for a main character. Like yes he is my favourite character other than Lucy but his inner psyche is barely explored it's so weird. He doesn't really have a character arc either??? I'll expand on this more once I finish post tartaros (lolll not looking forward to that) and once again it seems like he's completely regressed from what I've seen of 100yq.

I fucking love all the ships.

I don't agree with comments that Natsu can't be traditionally romantic. Like, I definitely don't think he would ever have the natural inclination to be that way as a part of his character on its own. BUT considering iconic rainbow sakura moment I fully believe he would do whatever it is that would make Lucy happy. And if that includes red roses and candlelit dinners he would absolutely try his best.

I totally see why Juvia stans don't like gruvia. But unfortunately I like them. And I've slightly rewritten them in my head so that juvia doesn't get completely flanderized LOL.

the Natsu Erza Gray sibling relationship goes soooo hard.

Just in general there's something beautiful about the way Fairy Tail handles it's numerous platonic and romantic relationships. Nothing feels secondary yk. Everything is given its due time (except maybe NALU goddammit).

I LOVE THAT FEMALE CHARACTERS HAVE DEEP COMPLEX RELATIONSHIPS IRRELEVANT TO THE MALE CAST. Lucy and Levy, Lucy and Yukino, whatever combination between Erza Lucy Wendy, Lucy Flare, Wendy Shelia, Wendy Carla etc

Even when the relationship involves a man in some kind of way like eg Lucy Cana or Erza Kagura it's still not like... in a bad way. The friendship itself is still there, it's just that the inciting incident tends to involve a dude.

Speaking of Lucy having so many deep female friendships is a big reason why I like Nalu so much lol. Like I literally do not care ab ships in media but fairy tail.... just has that something...

Love how often everyone changes outfits.

This show desperately needed a mini arc somewhere with just Natsu Lucy Happy going on a low stake job, where Natsu actually opens up ab his emotions and his relationship with Igneel.

Needed more Natsu and Igneel flashbacks in general.

Wendy triple combo abandonment issues are not talked ab enough holy shit. Grandeeny, Mystogan and then her entire guild???!

Lucy's relationship with her dad was objectively so well written. I skipped starry skies arc sorry the pacing was destroying me so I can't speak on that. But everything else was just BEAUTIFUL.

The fact that she returns to him just to tell at him. The fact that he comes to her with money problems and she STILL stands her ground. The fact that it's HIM who has to better himself and earn HER forgiveness.

Even after it seems like they're on ok terms, Lucy mentions in tenrou that they don't keep in contact, which is soo... realistic...

and then his death... Shout-out to Natsu who actually is emotionally quite mature (as the author himself seems to have forgotten) and dealt with it wonderfully. He gave Lucy her space, he let her vent, he stopped Happy from interfering too much. + Lucy being conflicted ab it and clearly grieving what could have been instead of what was. sighhh. .

idc ab no deaths but I do wish they didn't do fake out deaths as often. Because when actual loss sticks, it's done super well imo. Ultear, Aquarius, I haven't hit this part yet but Igneel... (yes I'm ignoring 100yq)

the episodic fillers r INCREDIBLE.

Rogue and Frosch are so special to me.

Wish they expanded on Jellal and Meredy's relationship a bit more it seems quite wholesome.

I love Virgo.

Really hate the muted colours Ft2014 onwards, but I do like that Lucy's hair became blonde and not yellow.

Pacing 2014 onwards was GOD AWFUL. I WAS SO SAD because I think the story beats in eclipse arc is actually super good but it was DRAGGED OUT SO MUCH nothing had the impact it should've.

Snow fairy, FT, Masayume chasing you will never be forgotten.

Lucy underutilizes Gemini so much it drives me mad. They were terrifying under Angel so like... cmon...

Someone pointed out that Natsu didn't reallyyy hang out with anyone other than Happy pre canon and it changed my life. Every time I notice him and Lucy casually hanging out now I start screaming.

HAPPY IS SUCH A GOOD CHARACTER IDC. His edolas character arc was incredible, his relationship with Lucy is just as (if not more) fleshed out as his one with Natsu and that's part of what makes them such a great trio.

I don’t like that in Mutant Mayhem Donnie is not a “science guy” but instead is more of an anime and pop culture geek. I’m not against him being an anime fan (I love anime too) but I wish we saw more of his science and being a tech genius side instead of him just liking stereotypical “nerdy stuff”. If that makes sense.

I don’t like the Punk Frogs (any version).

The 87 crossover episodes in the 2012 series (as much as I did enjoy them & are great episodes) should not have happened. They leave no real impact or development to 2012’s overarching story and just waste time. These episodes could’ve covered more important things that 202 was desperately lacking like like character exploration and character dynamic development. It was just nostalgic fanservice. The arc in S5 specifically would’ve work better as a movie instead of a 3-4 episode arc in the (most likely non canon) final season.

Shinigami being Mikey’s second love interests ruins her character a bit (for me personally). That was a pointless decision that did NOT need to happen. She would’ve been our first recurring female character to not be a love interest, but nope!

People are allowed to like/ship Donnie x April in ROTTMNT (this is coming from someone who’s not crazy about April being shipped with the Turtles).

I ship Yuichi with 2012 Leo more than Rise Leo (still ship Rise Leoichi, but I just think 2012 Leoichi is way more interesting, plus 2012 Leo deserves a good love interest).

The humans in Mutant Mayhem look ugly af (I know that was probably an intentional design choice but still. It looks bad.)

I hate Raph x Casey (any ver). I’ve stated in part one that I don’t like Raph (any version) being in a romantic relationship with human characters and yes, that meant him with Casey. Not only that but Raph and Casey being a couple ruins their whole dynamic and iconic friendship I love so much. I’m all for friends to lovers but they are a line that should not be crossed. Not every friendship needs to turn romantic.

2012 Karai’s hair looks bad.

Fans often over exaggerate Rise Donnie’s character and badly mischaracterize him in fanfics and fan comics to the point it makes him feel like he’s an entirely different character.

Shinigami should have been revealed to be a villain.

Rise Donnie was just as mean to his brother as fans claim 2012 Raph was to his. Yes, they both do love their families and I’m NOT saying either of them are abus!ce (they’re not), but fans praising Rise Donnie for doing similar things fans criticize/hate 2012 Raph for doing just makes them hypocrites.

Venus does NOT need to be in every iteration of TMNT. It gets kind of annoying when fans keep on saying that she should be in all the other iterations when in truth her presence would not make sense based on the already established canon story. The only (recent) version of TMNT where I think her being included would’ve fit the best and deserved to make her comeback in is ROTTMNT.

The side plot of 2012 Karai being mutated and later getting brainwashed by Shredder was a waste of time and the most boring arc in the series.

2012 April, Donnie and Casey being in a poly relationship does not fix anything with their problematic dynamic and massive flaws with one another. I'm not saying you can't ship all three of them together, you do you! Idc But in reality their relationship would be a train wreck, that's why I personally don't ship 2012 Capriltello.

Renet is probably one of the most powerful allies the Turtles have in the 2012 series.

Rise Donnie would NOT hate 2012 April. He’d go crazy over her psychic powers and want to study them to help her explore them more.

From what I've seen so far, Leo x Usagi seems like the only GOOD ship in the 2003 series (this hot take might change tho).

Raph had the best character arc and development in the 2012 series and changed the most out of the four brothers. Next would be Leo. With Mikey and Donnie have little development (or none at all sadly).

Also love that Pavel and Pooh just straight up skipped all the shy teasy fanservice "may or may not be boyfriends" steps and are straight up (pretend) husbands at the end of Pit Babe now. Good for them. lol.

Also Pavel lowkey genderfluid with this "role" the way he sometimes calls himself wife of his younger husband and later they are both each others husbands. Which kind of depends on if they are PoohPavel or Naret and Tin.

Uh, as a Korean American immigrant who has actually lived in Korea as a child, spent time in Korea for vacation and lived in Seoul while studying, this is 100% bullshit.

I really wish people who aren't Korean or don't have any connection to Korean culture would stop commenting in this way and I really wish people would stop taking Korean shippers at their word. A lot of shippers can not be trusted to remain unbiased and honest and that includes K-tkkers as well. Shippers always have and always put their own agenda first. We have all seen how video editors have been able to twist a single moment into something that seems much more and it's no different than what some Korean shippers do with the language.

Jeongguk isn't any more or less formal with Jimin than he is with Taehyung besides the fact that he's a little more teasing with Jimin in a way that could be considered taunting if you dialled it up (and I'm not saying that Jeongguk taunts Jimin. I'm trying to describe what kind of tone it is...more like sibling/close friend. Actually a bit like VMIN but not as much, if you understand what I'm trying to say)

but jkkers will use the fact that Jeongguk often drops the 형 (hyeong) honorific with Jimin but they won't tell you that it's because he jokingly PLAYS up the formality instead. If you listen closely, you will often hears Jeongguk adding 씨 (ssi) at the end of Jimin's name in place of 형 (hyeong). This is essentially calling him Jimin, sir or Mr Jimin.

(To make it clear, Jeongguk does this is a playful manner, not a cold or disrespectful manner and definitely not a sexual one as I've heard some foreigners claim when they find it out )

His language or tone can be very fond at times but this isn't exclusive to any particular member. It's just that shippers will only zoom in on the interactions between members they ship.

As for romantic tone, what are you people hearing, honestly?

Nobody and I mean NOBODY in Bangtan are speaking romantically to each other. Simply because they would never get away with it, making it so obvious. If you hear ANYTHING like that, it will be done in a way to make it obvious that it's a joke or not to be taken seriously.

If there were any romantic overtures at all, it would be done in a way that can be passed off as fanservice since that's considered acceptable and cute within fandoms (though there still a good portion of the GP especially older men who do not like fanservice between idols at all ) You would NOT find it within the language itself. We (Koreans) take language VERY seriously and that is something that would draw the attention of people outside of shippers.

To make it clear, there is none of this 'nuance' between the way Taehyung and Jeongguk speak to each other either.

The closest you will find to that perspective is that they kind of alter their tones with each other in a way that could appear 'couply' if that's what angle you were looking at it from; speaking lower and higher to appear more manly and soft but even then, in Korea this can be put down to a younger brother trying to impress an older brother by appearing more manly or an older brother teasing a younger brother because of the respect/honorific system.

(With all the other 'evidence' I personally considered it from a romantic angle but the point is that it can be viewed a different way)

I'm sorry to tell people but the only people who consider Jikook real or even Taekook real are their shippers. Korea really isn't as progressive as some of you seem to think it is. It's getting better but there's still a whole generation or two who hold onto the old ways and would not tolerate a homosexual couple and there's still a lot of homophobia within the younger generation that would surprise some people. The tide is turning but it's turning slowly I can see it taking a couple more generations at least before we see any sort of significant change. Personally, I think LGBTQ rights in Korea will be led by feminism and that it will be a consequence of women's rights being taken more seriously. I think we're going to have to wait to see a major foothold gained there before the discussion on LGBTQ is even taken seriously. That's just my opinion though.

So if any ship in Bangtan were treating each other or talking to each other in a way that could be considered seriously romantic, we would all know about it because it would be considered a national scandal.

Even when Dispatch highlights Taekook, they do so in a way that falls in line with the concept of fanservice or Dispatch trying to capitalise on their individual popularity by putting them together (like doubling down on their fans, if you understand what I mean)

Being American raised, I do think the fact that Dispatch highlights them so much and specifically focuses on them as a 'couple' rather than playing with the pairings is one of the more suspicious things about Taekook, especially if it is true that Jikook are the more popular couple with the Korean fandom and considering Jimin and Jeongguk are both more popular with K-Army than Taehyung is. (Up until Running Man at least. That gained him a lot of attention and favor with the GP and an older audience and I know his choice of military service would have been received well, especially by older and younger Korean males)

If you pay attention to the actual words passed between these pairings, you will very easily see who spends much time together and doesn't, who is just catching up after some time apart and not, who is pleased to see each other again or who doesn't feel the need to be, who knows more about each other than not. This is the kind of stuff where any 'nuance' lays but I can tell you absolutely that it doesn't lay directly in their language.

Sorry for rambling but it's just really annoying when I see Korean Army manipulating International Army with our language and culture. Yes, there are some nuances that can be missed if you're not familiar with our language and culture but we are all human beings at the end of the day and some understanding between us is universal. A good rule of thumb is that if it isn't coming across in the body language then don't trust it if someone says it's coming across in the verbal language.

If people really want to use language to frame or understand their ship then I would suggest actually learning it so you can be informed yourself rather than trusting the word of biased people. It might not give shippers the results they want but it is a beautiful, poetic language in its own right.

In Defense of Ruby Hoshino

Or: Yes, the Aqua/Ruby interactions from the last couple dozen chapters ARE necessary for characterization and thematic reasons, why do you ask?

The Oshi no Ko fandom has kind of frustrated me over the last few months. It feels like every chapter that comes out and any discussion of it now has people making over the top angry exclamations talking about how much they hate incest, calling it "bait" and irrelevant to the story. Now, while of course anybody is free to have their own preferences and things that bother them, I do think some of this is taken out of proportion, and perhaps blinding them to the actual narrative importance of Ruby's supposed feelings for Aqua. Which, I do think this is a critical, load bearing part of Ruby's character arc, and corresponding the themes of the story as a whole, so it bothers me when I see so many people dismissing it as "brocon fanservice" or shipping nonsense.

I think perhaps out of an instinctive disgust reaction, people have trouble engaging with it. The way people act seems to be that either this is a serious romance plot, and the series will end with them dating, or that it is merely for sexual titillation and shock value on the part of the author, with no greater meaning, but it's pretty clear that it is neither of those things - Aqua/Ruby is not a romance, they will not date, they do not have romantic feelings for each other. However, that doesn't mean that what's going on between them is pointless.

The issues that Ruby has, both in their relationship and just in general, hinge pretty explicitly on Ruby's assumptions about her own feelings in her past life. she cannot develop past those without first confronting them.

And this is not a new thing. The groundwork for how Ruby has been acting in the movie arc was laid down long before, and needs necessary followup. To simply not have her talk about potential feelings for Aqua, as some fans wish, would have meant leaving many threads hanging, and made for a worse story. Almost everything about how they've interacted was something that could have been predicted from chapter 77. In it, Ruby makes it clear that she believes her feelings for Gorou are romantic, and that she intends to try to initiate something in her new life. However, at the same time, the fact that it was never going to happen is also, I feel, fairly clear.

In the past, in the flashback scene, Sarina claimed she was in love with Gorou. He told her he would reciprocate when she turned 16. In my opinion, I do not think either of the feelings the characters expressed in this scene were meant to be believed by the audience at all. Sarina is 12 here, she might have a puppy crush on the doctor but I think true romantic interest was probably beyond her. Meanwhile, Gorou isn't actually a pedophile? His statement was made with both parties knowing that she would die long before then, a way to make his rejection hurt her less, and as a desperate attempt to motivate her to keep living as long as she could. Though it is clear that both are the most important people to one another, and that this is an expression of their real care, I very, very, much doubt there was any actual romance in this scene.

Does this not seem very relevant for a series with the theme of people not understanding love? Back then, Gorou was Sarina's one true bond. Her parents had abandoned her and she had no friends to visit her. This was the one example of real mutual care she had, of course she would call it "love." (I mean, I'd also call it love, but not a romantic love. Familial, if anything, but friends works too - the actual name on it is unclear, what matters is that they cared for each other, but not like that.) Now, in her new life as Ruby, she has many more people who love her and who she loves in return, but having died both painfully young before, she hasn't had the opportunity to really grapple with all the old feelings about the doctor. It's pretty obvious to me whenever we see Ruby thinking of Aqua now. Just look at this page from 126:

In Ruby's own mind, he's drawn in a completely different style, like a manga romance hero. Her feelings about Aqua are fantasies, dreams, and projections, not substantial or tied to reality.

Much has been made of how Aqua, despite being Ai's son, still puts her on the pedestal of an idol, and can not see her flaws and interiority, even as he tries to avenge her death. Part of this movie arc is having characters like Ruby, Kana, and Akane start to see Ai from new angles, and relate to the human part of her. But for Aqua and Ruby to truly develop past their issues, this isn't the only pedestal they need to tackle. Ruby's regard for the doctor is a direct mirror to Aqua's feelings towards Ai. Even with the object of her affections right in front of her, she can't she past her own assumptions.

And of course, while Ruby is slowly coming to understand Ai and still failing to understand Aqua, there's one more person in the room who Ruby needs to come to an understanding about: herself, both as Sarina and now. Her refusal to see Aqua's flaws is tied up in her own feelings about the past - to acknowledge him as imperfect would mean understanding that part of the reason Sarina loved Gorou was tied up in her own desperation to love and be loved. Furthermore, while she has many more ties in her life as Ruby, I don't think its a stretch to say part of her is still stuck in that past state, holding people at arm's length.

While she has friends now, the bonds she thinks of as strongest are the ones from back then - her idolization of Ai, her love for Gorou. When Aqua reveal's Ai's secrets, in 106, Ruby says that despite being siblings, raised together for 17 years now, she didn't think of Aqua as family on his own terms - she felt a bond solely because they were linked through Ai, and does not hesitate to cut him off. She doubles down on this in 122, calling them "strangers who happened to be born in the same place." Similarly, while Ruby has been shown to be friendly with coworkers like Kana and Mem, as well as classmates like Frill, on some level she is keeping them at a distance. Beyond the simple fact that she can't talk to them about her previous life, she's been keeping plenty of emotions held in for a long time - pretty much every Ruby appearance from the Miyazaki Return arc to today has shown her not wanting to acknowledge her own struggles. Her pain from her life as Sarina is easy to keep buried. When nobody else knows Sarina exists, all she has to do is not think about it, not talk about it, not say anything, and it's almost like it never happened. Not til her breakdowns in chapters like 115 and 121 does she speak it aloud, but always either with plausible deniability or when she thinks she's alone.

I don't think her bonds as Ruby are fake - part of what she says to aqua, I think, is a defensive cope - but much like how she says she is in love with Gorou now, that is what Ruby believes. To her, all the friendships and bonds she's made in her new life are transient and fleeting things. She can never feel secure that they are based in real feelings, that they won't simply drop her when she becomes inconvenient, as everyone in her past life did. This perception contributes to her own willingness to reject others. The only way Ruby is going to solve the story of Oshi no Ko is through coming to an understanding. Of Ai, of Aqua, and of Sarina. Ai didn't understand love until the day she died, and both of her children have in some ways followed in her footsteps, but Ruby has the chance to be the one to break this, to understand what was holding her back before and fully embrace loving her family and friends.(platonically. geez.) Reckoning with her feelings for Gorou (and by extension, Aqua,) was always going to be a key step forward for her. These dominoes have been laid down for 60-70 chapters now, at least, and I am excited to see where it goes.

One of the many many many things I love about Dungeon Meshi, is how unapologetically wholesome it is.

There is literally ZERO fanservice in there (unless you count the mouth watering renditions of the different dishes). None of the characters is sexualized in any way, none of the girls have gigantic boobs, and everyone and anyone can have injuries or look like absolute shit when waking up, fighting, or simply eating.

There is also almost zero shipping or romance, the most is one character having a crush on another, and a couple of characters that are actually married, but of the main cast, nothing of this happens. I'm of course, talking in-universe, the fandom has already decided that Marcille is in lesbians with Falin, OR that Laios and her are mutually in love. Sorta spoiler, but THANKFULLY, nothing ever happens.

So yeah, the story never changes genres and suddenly is all about romance, like so many other stories have done before. It's kind cool that their popularity exploded when the story was finished, so the author won't have to cater to the insane fanbase... Hope they don't change that in the anime...

And two three pages were like released or leaked from the webtoon and one was jm and jk's character's scene and other was with jk and joon's character's scene. The thing about Yoonmin that fascinates me is how their actions are so drastically opposite of what in general is considered "fanservice" and yet they remain as one of the popular duos (if not a ship) for ads, fanfiction, promotion, etc. Like they haven't even collaborated much (out of BTS obviously) apart from Tony Montana, they genuinely bicker and one-up and shade each other all the time, have like minimum skinship and yet or perhaps due to this, they kind of share this insane chemistry. Like I see it now, what everyone's been talking about. Just letting the two of them share screen space their whole vibe just lights up, whether they're actually shooting a script or just being themselves. Authentically as a duo yoonmin are hilarious, (and might I say this without fear, they are kind of romantic too sometimes) while literally pulling each other's leg. I guess my eyes just opened up to Yoonmin this year and now I'm in deep 🙃.

Lmfao I GENIUNELY cannot tell if you are a yoonmin shipper and got confused about if I am also a yoonmin shipper. (I'm not, nor do I think they are romantic in their moments... they are just my biases and they do love each other more than anything for sure) I love their moments and interactions so much though too. Where do you see Stolitz being at the end of the season? I don’t know how much heartbreak I can take.

Oooh Nonnie I’d prepare for some ANGST but there’s nothing in the text to indicate it’s the bad kind imo. I feel confident that it’s gonna be that good productive angst that gets us places we wanna go, that we’ll flail about and be heartbroken about but not that Game of Thrones style pointless nihilist angst that is just for shock value or because the creators wanted a cliffhanger or a twist.

One of the things I find comforting about this show is the people making it are very much a part of fandom rather than corporate studios using general audience analytics or creators who are just there for a paycheck. The creative team of this show genuinely seems to care about these characters. I have a lot of anxiety about my hyperfixation ships so I feel you on the worry but it would be a huge waste of time and incredibly unsatisfying for the audience to change directions midstream. And the beauty of a cartoon is that even if the actors leave or people change out from the creative team as long as there is money and a drive to make it they aren’t beholden to the same logistics issues as a live action.

From a storytelling perspective it doesn’t make sense to reverse course and break them up forever. I’m not writing the show so I can’t tell you with 100% certainty but there are too many threads intricately knotted together and if they cut this relationship out the whole fucking show unravels. I’ve always said Stolas and Blitzo’s relationship was central in the first two episodes of the show, Stolas is how IMP does business, the 2nd episode was literally all about Stolas’s family drama and the show is about Blitz so it would take a lot of work to stop this train and still leave your audience satisfied at the end. Work that it doesn’t make sense to do. This is not a fanservice thing, like Stolitz is too popular or something like that, but a storytelling thing. It’s such a huge part of the show they can’t drop it in a way that wouldn’t drive the audience away, even casual viewers. And being an indie production they have to be very deliberate and careful with their choices, they don’t have the capital to be doing like two sample hypothesis testing with the story or trying out different threads. It’s just not feasible.

If the trailer did anything it was reinforce every assumption or speculation I’ve made, like I got so much dopamine from that fucking trailer. And all the speculation lines up perfectly with my episode deep dives and how I, as a writer and creative, understand the structure and narrative choices being shown. And I am SO PUMPED ABOUT WHERE THIS TRAIN IS HEADING. It’s gonna hurt but in the best way I think.

To answer your question, as far as the end of this season I am of two minds. Either Stolas and Blitz make the decision to start a relationship in S2 and S3 is them working through it during whatever trials and tribulations they are undergoing.

Or they are not together but we get a lot of delicious pining through S3 where they finally get together together and S4 is the working through the relationship season.

How I think it’s going to play out after a few days of rearranging things in my head:

Blitzø and Stolas are both excited and anxious about their upcoming rendezvous. Blitzø is doing sexy date prep and seeking advice from his bestie on sex toys. Stolas is drowning in anxiety.

Blitzø fucks up. Either he says something hurtful or embarrasses Stolas in some way, either about his royal duties or Octavia. I theorize that the issue with the Full Moon is Stolas’s fault and Vassago is the character who will bring that to his attention. Might possibly comfort him. Andrelphus and Stella are going to take advantage of the situation.

Blitzø tries to take it back, that’s why he’s reaching out but he’s denied.

In Apology Tour Blitzø tries to get back to their casual “If I ignore it it’s fine” status quo but Stolas is not having it. That’s the garden conversation where he’s serving so much cunt.

Stolas either defends Blitzø with his song at Verosika’s tour or it’s so heartbreaking Blitzø has no way to hide from it anymore. I also think Versoika herself will point out that Blitzø is treating Stolas quite a bit differently than he did her which also keeps him from shoving his feelings down.

I think at the end of this episode Stolas calls things off but Blitzo is now aware of how Stolas feels and how he feels. He is not ready to act on it yet.

Ghostfuckers I think will be primarily Millie and Blitzø. Blitzø will probably have to confront how he was when they first met, and other things like his mother and Barbie.

Mastermind is probably the CHERUB/DHORKS episode. I still think it’s probably a gag tbh. Like the actual episode is not about them at all because in my mind they are the Sir Pentious of HB. Like they believe they are this big bad but they just kind of fail and disappear and keep coming back as a running annoyance. I kind of think the real threat is maybe Satan or Andrelphus/Stella.

In one of three episodes, or at the end of Apology Tour something happens to Stolas. He is taken out of commission in some way. He loses his job, he is absent. I don’t think it will be his fault.

I think this will come into play in Sinsmas, which maybe very much like Seeing Stars where maybe Stolas promised Octavia something for the holiday or they had a tradition and he misses it because of being out of commission. She finds him with Blitzø who is rescuing him from Andrelphus. I kind of think Vassago will help him or tip him off that Stolas is in trouble. Octavia is mad and lashes out. That conflict I see going into S3.

Blitzø needs proof that he doesn’t fuck up people’s lives and right now the person who’s life is in the biggest shambles because of Blitzø (not like because of him but their involvement, you know what I’m saying) is Stolas. He’s divorcing, he might lose his job, his daughter is going to be pissed at him. Stolas will have literally nothing because of their dalliance. So either way I see no way that the breakup is permanent.

If they breakup for good that reinforces Blitzo’s fear he fucks up people’s lives. There’s no resolution to that conflict. Moxxie and Millie don’t have a lot of life problems related to Blitzø tbh, he’s creepy about their relationship but it doesn’t cause them strife only annoyance. Loona is fine too right now. Fizz and he have started reconciliation and Fizz out right told him he was doing well. Verosika is pissed and still a drunk last we see her but her career is taking off.

By having Stolas break up forever only reinforces the idea that you don’t get a second chance at love for Stolas (or a first chance), and says “Yeah, Stolas IS better off without him” and I doubt that’s the story they want to tell lol. On Stolas’s side it would be all kinds of fucked up to imply that parents can’t have romantic relationships because their kids are mad about it imo. That his only option as a loveless arranged marriage and continuing to lie to himself and the world. Like a child should be priority but parents are also fully formed humans with lives outside of their children and it’s not great to have a child throw a fit and the parent be like “Oh okay, guess I’ll just be alone cause my teenage daughter is sulky”.

Like the issues they’ve set up can only be resolved satisfactorily one way at this point, at least in my opinion. Whether that happens in S2 or later in S3 I still very firmly believe it will be a focus and we’ll get lots of little moments.

I think it’s the fact no one can deny there’s not some legit queercoding going on with shadowpeach. Before I could ignore it as the odd fanservice but now it’s like, their relationship was queer as hell and the way they are now is also queer as hell so I’m curious where the lmk crew is going to take this.

I’m not 100% sure what you’re responding to - did you send this to the right person? - but I’m always happy to talk!

I’m not gonna lie, I consider LMK to be a “friendship” show. I genuinely don’t watch it looking for romance, and wouldn’t like it that much if they did: if I wanted romance, I’d read Beware the Villainess or a romance novel! Developing a romance feels kind of out of place, in my opinion. Despite enjoying a bunch of ships, I’d rather everyone just stay friends in canon (except for tang and pigsy, let married old men lie!!!).

For shadowpeach… you really can read them as a best friend breakup. I’ve had a ton of “best friend breakups” in my childhood and their story fits that to a T: the weird codependency, the lack of self awareness, the innocence and earnest affection they share. Even the idea of just chilling on FFM forever: isn’t that a kid’s idea of what they want when they grow up? To be exactly the same, not working a day in their lives, and enjoying idleness with their best friend forever? I’ve had that wish before!

But there are 2 MAJOR romantic-coded moments that I fully can’t read as platonic: the argument scene and the cloud swoosh scene.

The first is a specific phrase in the argument: “I did this for us!” Emphasis on the us. That sounds so exactly like a quote from a couple’s breakup fight. Even saying “both of us” is less romantic than just “us”: both acknowledges there’s two people. Only “us” has the connotations of being a unit.

And the cloud swoosh scene. You know, when SWK swooshed by Mac on the cloud in the final ep? The camera slowed and emphasized macaque’s reaction: the whole windswept awe vibe of that half second really did seem most akin to a romantic moment, a la who is this beautiful stranger? Or how did I not realize how I felt until now?

But ultimately, staying strict to canon, this ends up reading as childhood-bffs-who-broke-up-before-anything-romantic-could-happen story. They didn’t understand themselves well enough/were happy as they were without romance to want it then, and things are too messed up between them now, but in the future…?

Well, in the future canon, I would like them to hold hands. If they’re a bit fruity about it, all the better.

Anyways, Mikuru bonding with Kyonsis is cute. I wish I could like the Kyon/Mikuru ship. Which is to say, they get enough cute moments and development together that I would totally support this ship if the show didn't also have Kyon grossly indulging in Mikuru's harassment too.

...in general, a lot of the way the show handles Mikuru is gross. Like. They even brought in Future Mikuru at one point to wax nostalgic about Haruhi's harassment.

That's the kind of move a creator makes when they know they're being gross and want defensibility. "It's okay, she secretly likes it; She'll look back on it fondly some day."

I'm never really sure what to make of Mikuru because this isn't, like, a Male Gazey kind of show. It doesn't have the typical background noise of camera shots lingering on objectified body parts or slow panning over female bodies that typify shows made from the perspective of the Male Gaze.

Even things like the bunny girl outfits or Haruhi aggressively beginning to change while people are still in the room as a power play aren't dwelt on to the extent you'd expect from the Male Gaze.

But Mikuru feels like a character from one of those kinds of shows. The recurring joke is Haruhi physically bullying Mikuru, forcibly stripping her, making guys molest her, making her dress in various fetishized costumes, forcing her to eat expired shit from that guy's fridge they broke into, etc. - often to the point of leaving Mikuru in tears, and... that's it. That's the punchline. LOL Haruhi objectifies her body and treats her like shit.

This is one of three main things Mikuru does. The second is to form a Love Corner of

Haruhi -> Kyon (<-?) -> Mikuru

And honestly? Like 90% of the time, Kyon and Mikuru's interactions are great. But then he does shit like saving those erotic Mikuru photos he made Haruhi delete to a private folder for his personal perusal. Or says shit like this.

Or the show does shit like this.

Future Mikuru literally telling Kyon, "For compensation, feel free to make out with my past self while she's drugged!"

He does not. Thankfully. But it's so fucking weird that she even said that. Why would you write this dialogue?

And then her third thing is time travel. Which isn't given the same level of gravitas as Itsuki and Yuki. She can't fight the battles like they can. She can't exposit information like they can because everything's classified. She isn't even very good at time travel; It's explicitly brought up that Yuki's better at it.

Essentially, she has no powers or abilities beyond being present in the group so Kyon can ogle her and Haruhi can molest her.

If this were a big Male Gaze type of show, I'd be like, "Oh, yeah, she's the Fanservice Girl. Got it." But it's not. So I just. I don't understand why she's handled like this. Why is this here?

Which is what makes it nice when the show isn't doing that, and instead we get nice Mikuru content where she's being happy and everyone's treating her well.

Less of... whatever all of that is and more of this please. She's great with kids! She plays Go Fish!

Which she took second place in, by the way. Mikuru beat God at cards and entertained the small child while doing it. So HA!
