The Nebra Sky Disc - bronze, gold - Unetice culture - Early Bronze Age - c.1800-1600 BCE

The Nebra sky disc is a bronze disc of around 30 cm (12") diameter and a weight of 2.2 kg (4.9 lb), having a blue-green patina and inlaid with gold symbols. These symbols are interpreted generally as the Sun, a lunar crescent, and stars (including a cluster of seven stars interpreted as the Pleiades). Two golden arcs along the sides, interpreted to mark the angle between the solstices, were added later. A final addition was another arc at the bottom with internal parallel lines, which is usually interpreted as a solar boat with numerous oars, though some authors have also suggested that it may represent a rainbow, the Aurora Borealis, or a comet.

The disc was found buried on the Mittelberg hill near Nebra in Germany. It is dated by archaeologists to c. 1800–1600 BCE and attributed to the Early Bronze Age Unetice culture. It served as a reminder of when it was necessary to synchronize the lunar and solar years by inserting a leap month. This phenomenon occurred when the three-and-a-half-day-old moon —the crescent moon on the disc— was visible at the same time as the Pleiades. As preserved, the disc was developed in four stages:

Initially the disc had thirty-two small round gold circles, a large circular plate, and a large crescent-shaped plate attached. The circular plate is interpreted as the Sun, the crescent shape as the Moon, and the dots as stars, with the cluster of seven dots likely representing the Pleiades star cluster. At some later date, two arcs (constructed from gold of a different origin, as shown by its chemical impurities) were added at opposite edges of the disc. To make space for these arcs, one small circle was moved from the left side toward the center of the disc and two of the circles on the right were covered over, so that thirty remain visible. The two arcs span an angle of 82°, correctly indicating the angle between the positions of sunset at summer and winter solstice at the latitude of the Mittelberg (51°N). The final addition was another arc at the bottom, identified as a solar boat, again made of gold, but originating from another different source. By the time the disc was buried it also had 38 to 40 holes punched out around its perimeter, each approximately 3 millimetres (0.12 in) in diameter.

"One last Apology"

Summary: Nebra was sick, and went to apologise to Noelle before her death.

CW: death, angsty.

Noelle and Charmy were at a small boutique at Kikka, trying to get their minds off the other Bulls, carefully gazing at all the delicate dresses the shop had to offer. The bell of the shop's door clinged- signaling that someone had entered, as she got out of the small changing room.

The woman stood taller than she remembered.

Her hair had grown slightly, and she had a genuine smile on her lips, unlike the usual smirk she always wore. Her quartz eyes sparkled with love and regret, as she approached Noelle.

"Nebra"

Her sister offered a smile, one Noelle gladly accepted.

"Noelle, we... we have to talk." She stated, her voice filled with something Noelle couldn't quite place. Nebra led her outside, and sat her down on the end of the walk.

The streets were empty, nobody was around. The sun had set a few hours ago, and they all, including the bulls, had decided to go back to their homes. The walk they sat on was dimmly lit by a streetlight, its flame desperately trying to stay alight. The end of the walk was a bit wet, but Noelle sat down, and was surprised when Nebra did too.

"Listen Noelle... I-I had to talk to you. It's about... About me."

Noelle scoffed. Of course Nebra would want to talk about herself. She intended to get up, but her sister's iron grip was right on her wrist.

"I wanted to apologise. For everything." She took a deep breath. "I know I haven't been the best sister to you, but I needed to be in peace with you." She concluded.

Were Noelle's eyes tricking her? Or was Nebra crying... Was it a trick of the streetlight? It had to be.

But was it?

Noelle wanted to ask, but her sister swiftly got up nada made her way to the carriage the awaited at the other end of the street.

"Oh, and, Noelle?"

"Hm?"

"I love you, little sister" then, Nebra dissapeared in her carriage, travelling into the darkness of the night.

Nebra sat on her bed, in her nightgown. Nozel and Solid stood beside her, on the couch she had moved into her chambers. She felt lightheaded, and leaned her head on the pillow. Upon noticing this, Nozel and Solid quickly went to her side, holding her hands. They knew it was bound to happen.

If only they had more time...

Nebra paled more if posible, as her breathing slowly turned erratic.

"Brothers... I apologised." She said, a tear falling from her eye.

Nozel and Solid assured her they were proyd of her, no matter what. They wished for her to be okay. But that wouldn't happen.

"Mom... wait for me..."

Her breathing stopped.

Nozel and Solid broke down crying, as they realized they would never see their sister again.

Noelle suddently felt something. Something in the back of her head told her something was not right.

If only she had known that was the last time she would see her...

The site where the Nebra Sky Disk was found, including the Mittelberg observation tower, is located on the Mittelberg. The whole history of the sky disc is quite exciting. I was particularly taken by the architecture and design of the lookout tower, which serves as the pointer to a kind of sundial. It is not far from the place where the sky disc was found, on which a sun mirror is installed.
