Wendy’s LoZ Sickfic Recc List

I was asked to do this by a couple other people in Zelda fandom! I am a massive fan of sickfic and it’s pretty much the only genre I really write myself, and my voracious appetite for it means that I am ridiculously adept at tracking down even untagged/hidden gems!

What constitutes a sickfic? By my standards, it’s any fic where a character is down with a low-stakes illness, and may or may not be looked after by someone nearby. i tend to favour natural illnesses but i’m down for a poisoning or an infected wound every once in a while~

(also, i don’t really read for AUs much, so sorry but those are gonna be absent!)

almost all of these are Sick!Link. the fandom has decided he is the perfect specimen. i can’t really argue with this, but sorry for a lack of variety in sickies.

While this is a recc list, I really don’t have impossibly high standards for sickfic, so it’s more or less just a masterlist of every single sickfic I could find that was... legible, lol. It spans multiple decades and multiple websites. Hoo.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Sidon. Sidon is so soothing in this one. i’m constantly astounded by how sidlink authors write sidon but he is just extra soft and soothing in this one, every word he speaks is like a breath of relief.

Even Heroes Can Catch a Cold by TheBuggu - [Sidlink - 9k+ words - AO3]

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Sidon. PEOPLE WHO WRITE MULTICHAPTER SICKFIC GO TO HEAVEN BEFORE THEY DIE. i don’t even know what to say about this one because its just so delightfully meaty, but i think most of all i love how in character it is and especially how this author writes sidon. he is so perfectly dreamy and dashing, in that way where it’s not even intimidating. this is honestly a must-read if u like sidlink period.

Rain by RosyPumpkin - [Sidlink - 520 words - AO3]

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Sidon. Short and dreamlike, told in quiet little bursts. Link overdoes it on the way to Vah Ruta and fights until he’s too sick to carry on, but Sidon is there to keep watch over him.

Sick!Sidon, Caretaker!Link. SWITCHING THINGS UP! how fucking NOVEL. that sounds sarcastic but i mean it, its so nice to see Link acting as caretaker~! and he’s so tender here, putting his skills as both an alchemist and a doting lover to use~ we love to see it.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Sidon. Link stumbles into the domain having caught something nasty, Sidon is there to adoringly fuss over him. This is literally just the sugariest fluff in the entire world it makes me feel like keeling over in the most affectionate way.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Zelda/Impa, post-calamity. ‘magic-attuned character is so feverish they can see ghosts for a while’ is the most big brained and original sickfic idea i have read in AGES. this is a very good take on the classic botw sickfic trope of Link passing out the second the calamity is defeated, i love.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Zelda, pre-calamity. Zelda’s trying to be softer on her knight, really, she is, but nothing about the way he is makes any sense to her, and she can’t seem to breach his walls... until he’s a little too sick to keep himself quiet, and all those walls come crashing down.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Zelda, pre-calamity. This is one of my all time faves, if just for the novelty of it being a pre-calamity. Link’s bad at being sick and Zelda’s gotta use her big fuckin scientist brain to figure out how to get him to rest for five minutes! Absolutely adore their dynamic here.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Teba/Saki/Tulin, post-calamity. Teba finds Link sick in the middle of his journey and it’s 8 chapters of him forcing him to rest in Rito Village. there’s some references to HWAOC but it’s ultimately set in the botw timeline. love this one, under-utilized pair.

Sick!Koko, Caretaker!Dorian, Cado and Cottla being generally adorable in the bg. oh this one is such a comedy of errors in the best possible way but it just oozes tooth-rotting familial fluff. i LOVE to see sickfic about underrated NPCs and kakariko just has SUCH a cozy vibe every sickfic set there feels so nice.

To the Castle by ficletsandthelike (schulia_jet) - [Mostly just Link - 900+ words - AO3]

Sick!Link, teeny tiny bit of Caretaker!Zelda, pre-calamity. a short solo piece about link pushing through illness to make his way back to the castle, stubborn as he tends to be. this author weaves absolutely delightful little vignettes~

Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu (Please Take Care of Me) by Tony WildRiver - [Link, Koko, Cottla] - 5k+ words - FFnet]

Sick!Link, Caretaker Koko/Cottla/Dorian. Link stumbles into Kakariko, soaking wet and running a fever, and miraculously runs into two of the only people in town who can convince him to take it easy. This is, without a doubt, one of the most ADORABLE sickfics in the entire world.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Tatl/Anju. i constantly forget how good this one is until i’m reading it again. the sickfic is lovely but the introspective bits are such a delight, i’m obsessed with how this writer characterizes both link and tatl. it’s honestly so unique to this story and i can’t recommend this one enough.

Sick!Zelda, Caretaker!Link, adult!Link. apparently the OOT Zelink fandom just knows whats up. i fucking LOVE how the two of them are written in this one, much like the above they are just SO immature and it’s adorable to watch. link as a caretaker is a hot mess in the best possible way and still somehow gets the job done, it’s so quintessentially him i can’t get over it.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Granny/OCs, adult!Link. this one is incomplete and hasn’t been updated in a long time, but still it’s one of my favourites and despite my reluctance to read incomplete fics, i really love what we did get of this one. it’s a higher stakes sickfic that answers the question ‘how did this idiot make it out of zora’s domain without pneumonia?’ and i love it for that. the OCs are charming as all hell, and it does a wonderful job of characterizing NPCs~

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Groose/Old Impa, post-surface. takes place in a fun little spot right after the first imprisoned fight, where groose hasn’t quite grown into his good guy wings yet but is still doing his best. i adore how he’s written here, and this is also one of those sickfics that gets link incredibly right, as well. feels good all around.

Everyone works together to make sure his dumb ass gets in bed and Ilia is very cute. Imo this fic is... such a perfect length I have nothing else to say it’s just perfect. Classic.

AU where daphnes unboats himself and lives w/ link and fam. i absolutely adore how this author writes the both of them. two chapters, the first one is link looking after daphnes and the second is the reverse. just feels like comfort food~

Queasy (orphaned) - [Link & Daphnes - 2k+ words - AO3]

Sick!Daphnes, Caretaker!Link, same AU as above. the utter hilarity of being seasick when u spent a good chunk of your life as a fucking boat. anyways as previously mentioned this author just makes them SO sweet i’d read a thousand more words from this AU.

Sick/Injured!Link, Caretaker!Daphnes, same AU as above. on the whumpier side of things, link and daphnes wash up on windfall on the end of a gyorg attack at sea. daphnes practically tears the island apart to fix his v small son.

Sick!Link, Caretaker!Daphnes. this one is so fucking good. daphnes is actually boat here so he does his best talking link through the mortifying ordeal of being seasick. despite not being able to comfort him traditionally, he’s just a very soothing presence. i really adore nonconventional caretakers and this fic does so good with it.

Boy, do I have a list for you! I’ve actually been waiting to see if anyone would ever ask me for fic recs for a while, so I am prepared haha. We haven’t talked about any of these, so hopefully they’re new for you! Actually, I had to stop myself from completely regurgitating my whole subscription and bookmark lists on AO3 haha

Let Us ‘verse by @tobiblack — It’s a bit lengthy but I managed to binge-read it in like 3 days it’s so good. Basically, it’s “hey, what if the clones started a rebellion against the Empire” and also speeds up some of the events of the OG to happen earlier. It’s got clones, Ghost crew, the Skytwins, and basically everything I love about Star Wars in one series

Change Order 66 by @lunaemoth — A fix-it series (3 parts), because we all know I’m a sucker for those haha. Basically, the chip protocol for Order 66 has been changed from “kill the Jedi” to “protect the Jedi at all costs”

Insomnia by @moonbittern — I read this so much. Just a little bit of Kix in the future while he’s with the pirates, one-shot. Honestly, part of what kicked (ha) my feels toward Kix in the future which resulted in Beginn

Literally anything (and I mean anything) by @captain-fives but to get you started, I’ll say the death and subsequent life of arc trooper fives. The main premise is “hey, what if Fives faked his death and is now with the Bad Batch,” set in The Bad Batch arc. It’s a wip and takes some time between updates (I get the feeling) but is absolutely worth it. I have been thinking about it so much lately it’s so. freakin. good.

Echoes of Malevolence by @naberiie — Finn and Rey run across the remains from the first 104th fleet and can feel the echoes in the Force. A bit more horror than I normally go for but it’s great and angsty

Young Enough to Try (To Build a Better Life) by AndiinaRaethTash -- Following the Rebels finale, Ezra somehow gets sent back in time to the Clone Wars and is found by the 501st. Absolutely great, also a wip. Just updated today, actually.

From Which Stars Have We Fallen, to Meet Each Other Here? - this is the rarepair hell I mentioned above. Fives/Rabe, will end you. I also highly recommend all the other works in this collection, because wow.

Memories Lost - A Finnpoe AU that will make you laugh then cry then yell then cry again. Another one of my all-time favorites.

time to change the road you're on - A time-travel AU that’s centered around Ahsoka and the painfully cathartic fix-it we all need.

hold me 'till it sleeps - A Hamilton AU- high angst. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve reread this, and I think I have a few parts memorized. This is one of my forever favorites.

Currently craving: A feeling of success. I have a couple writing projects I need to finish that are making me stressed. One is for my MA application, and the other is for my Ovid class. I’ll feel so happy once I’ve finished them.

✨ Why do you like AtLA?

So many reasons! The world building is expansive and the different styles of bending is so clever, but what really resonated with me is how well the show can balance humor with more serious and dark moments. The season one finale still gives me goosebumps! Also, I had a mega crush on Kyoshi.

✨ What character and card resonate with you? Why?

The Star, the card of hope and rebuilding. And I've always loved Katara! She's passionate, good-hearted, and stubborn as all hell.

✨ What book/text would you want to read the most? Or, talk about a book/text you've read or will read and what it means to you.

Two books that I started recommending to people before I even finished reading them myself are The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers and Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Chambers writes some of the warmest, coziest science fiction I have ever found. There’s a huge emphasis on found families, the characters and worlds and alien species are all charming and loveable, AND it’s gay! I reread it at least once a year. Kimmerer is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi nation and a botanist. She couples indigenous knowledge with her scientific training for this book about the natural world, our place in it, and the reciprocal nature of that relationship. Her writing is absolutely gorgeous and definitely made me cry more than once, as well as filled me with a deeper appreciation of... basically everything. Her writing is a celebration of the world; this is one book I think absolutely everybody needs to read!

1. finally got help for my depression so my mental health has improved a lot since earlier in the year! my grades haven’t quite caught up yet, which is frustrating, but it’s a start

2. started volunteering at the los angeles natural history museum, which i hope to continue doing for as long as possible!

3. spent 4 weeks over the summer taking an aquatic microbiology class at the USC wrigley institute on catalina island, and challenged myself to be more outgoing and actually hang out with my classmates while i was there

4. turned 21 and got drunk for the first time at galaxy’s edge at disneyland which was frankly extremely iconic of me

5. bought a nintendo switch and played a lot of great games! (including but not limited to fire emblem: three houses, breath of the wild, and abzu)

finished boulder by eva baltasar today and am a bit conflicted. i really related to the disgust the pov character, a queer woman, felt towards all things pregnancy and childbirth related. it was so genuinely refreshing to read the way the author wrote never couched that disgust or ever shamed her for it. the despair i felt while reading as the noose of her situation gradually closed in with no way out was an incredibly unique experience. and then it flipped on its head to ‘i didn’t love my child until i held it and now i want nothing more’. i recognize that it’s a subversion of a heteronormative trope, where it’s the father who feels increasingly alienated from and confused by his changing partner throughout a pregnancy but then he holds the baby and finally Gets It. i didn’t want her to get it. i wanted her to get out, with that same utterly refreshing lack of condemnation

Formative Crushes

I was tagged by my dear friend @absynthe--minded to, I quote, “talk about my formative crushes”. A lot of this has just been rewinding through my childhood and stopping when I, for Absolutely No Reason, thought a particular female character was Incredibly Beautiful and I wanted to Spend All My Time With Her.

1. Susan Pevensie, Prince Caspian (2008)

Little Braigwen was beside herself to discover and being a badass warrior and a beautiful queen were not mutually exclusive - and that a queen needn’t be involved in that distasteful having-a-king-husband business to earn her title. Little Braigwen was also beside herself at Susan’s steady skill and leadership in a crisis, the way her chain-mail swung when she drew her bow, the beauty of her face and figure .... She was absolutely gorgeous, and I was absolutely smitten.

2. Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (2008)

When I first read The Hunger Games, Katniss struck me as incredible, in a very vulnerable way. I’d always wanted to a woodswoman, hunting vigilante, walls and fences drove me wild, and I had recently moved to a city for the first time, and was shocked by the overload and plenty of it all. But most of all, this was a girl who stuck with her morals even when it meant her certain death. And yet she managed to live. That was who I wanted to be, that was what I wanted to do. She gave me hope... and if I was outraged in more ways than most young feminists when her legs and arms were waxed, and if I was frustrated in more ways than most young revolutionaries when she was pretending to be in love with Peeta... Well.

Now I look back at it, I’m able to see even more aspects of myself in Katniss - the inability to play society’s expected charade, the weight of supporting a family at fifteen and the fury at your mother that comes with it. The ancient lesbian adage of “do I want to be her or date her?” here, could more accurately be: “Do I want to date her because we’re similar, or because she gives me hope a happy ending is possible?”

3. my current girlfriend

I’m sure I’ll think of more people later, but for now I feel I must conclude that archery is what made me gay.

Water and Sunlight by antheiasilva: I was sold on this fic from the very first chapter. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are very much contrasted in terms of their ideas about the Jedi Code and what is appropriate, and I’m always such a sucker for hurt!Obi-Wan convinced that he doesn’t deserve to be snuggled and looked after, and of course Qui-Gon lets him know that that’s rubbish. Whenever I see the tag “Obi-Wan Needs A Hug” the pressing question on my mind is...WILL HE GET ONE?? And this story does not disappoint! I also thought the QuiObi issue (that is, the fact that they were once master and padawan) is very conscientiously handled here, even though it’s hard for Obi-Wan to accept Qui-Gon’s boundaries. Can definitely recommend for high quality snuggle time and discussion of feelings!!

untitled by incognitajones: This is such a tender moment between the two of them! What really stands out to me is how well Jyn and Cassian understand each other, and how even though Jyn has exactly 0 patience for Cassian not wanting to take care of himself, she also knows his boundaries. The hurt as well as the comfort is visceral in this fic, I loved the image of pain dulled “like touching a blade insulated by a thick blanket”. Anyone who knows me knows I live for the hurtcomforty details of a fic, tell me where it hurts and what makes it feel better, especially if it’s their loved one’s touch. This little one-shot hit all those buttons for me.

Hands in the Dirt, Head in the Sun by naberiie Um hello, this is adorable? I’m in love with the idea of Kix in the Resistance and I melted at the thought of his experiences echoing Finn’s, and the bittersweet discussion of the scars it has left on both of them, but they have one another, and Kix just understands in a way Finn didn’t know he needed and I loved, loved, loved watch them both take steps towards healing over the course of the story. You couldn’t ask for a sweeter ending. XX

untitled by pandora15: Ok, confession time: sepsis is the end-all be-all of hurtcomfort for me. You’ve got the injury/infection, usually one that’s been hidden or not treated for some time. You’ve got the fever, the chills, the delirium (this fic is a bolt straight to the heart on that one, poor Obi-Wan and his disastrous visions of horrors he can only imagine), you’ve got the angst, the life-and-death drama, the hospital stay, but you also more than likely have a happy ending too, because antibiotics are wonderful and the GFFA has bacta galore. I particularly loved the image that we are left with (look away now if you don’t want spoilers), Obi-Wan safe now but still suffering, and Anakin by his side until the morning, when hopefully poor Obi will feel better. This is sooo sweet and gentle and if you like it you should also peruse Pandora’s Whumpmas Masterlist because let’s be honest, it’s ALL fantastic.

Leia, afraid by weary-hearted-queen: Wow. All I have to say about this is wow. I included this fic for the emotional hurt/comfort, but I think the character study of Leia is really the shining aspect of this, the conflict between Leia the Person and Leia the Symbol of the Rebellion. I loved the quiet support from Luke and Han, and the beautiful, flowy narrative. It’s moments like these that I remember why Leia has always been my favorite character in the series. I love how this highlights the before and after, Leia before the destruction of Alderaan and Leia after, how things will never quite be the same again. Just gorgeous writing. <3
