CS Fic Rec Monday: “The Mystery of Pixie Hollow” by: @wefoundloveunderthelight
Oh my goodness!!! This multichapter CS AU was finished way back in the Fall of last year as well. (One of these days maybe I’ll get caught up!) Anyway, as is the case with all of @wefoundloveunderthelight‘s fics, it has an incredible plot that just keeps pulling you along, desperate to know what happens next! I was actually slightly glad in this case that I was behind, because waiting (even a few days) between updates of this one would have been incredibly difficult.
I loved the father-daughter and mother-son bonds illustrated in this one, for both Kililan and Alice and then for Emma and Henry. Plus, the mystery of it, the danger from Pan and his cronies, the angst adn the hurt, adn how that brought this version of Emma and Killian together in a way that was different from canon, and yet still very powerful. Such a GREAT read!!

I wish Silvermist was Periwinkle's twin sister instead of Tinker Bell!! That way some of the character of Rani from 'Tales of Pixie Hollow' (2006) book series can be combined with Silvermist and the ableist trope of "character who becomes physically disabled is magically cured of the physical disability" trope can be avoided (simply cut out each instance of "being twins means their wings glow when near each other"). A wingless Silvermist would be awesome and her needing to learn to think ahead would be nice character growth she could have in the Pirate Fairy movie. Secret of the Wings coulda been titled 'Tinker Bell and the Winter Woods' as was originally intended.

“THE CRANN OF THE FAE” Spread 1 : ✨introductions✨
MAIN TEXT: “HELLO ME! Or who I can only assume is me, considering that this is my journal. But if for some mysterious reason this highly valuable tome of knowledge has fallen into the hands of a stranger (and not the more likely scenario where it was snatched by the pixies that keep raiding my treehouse) then hello you! When I decided to write this new journal, I hadn't really considered that the knowledge it will contain might one day find its way into the hands of another. But if that be the case, I feel like some context, and maybe a proper introduction would be a helpful start.
My name is Aiva Abara, and this is my book of wonders. I grew up on a small farm in County Kilkenny, Ireland, and have always felt especially drawn to nature. Not surprisingly considering that most of my childhood was spent stumblin' about the forests surrounding my home and tending to the animals on the farm. For all I know I might’ve been under the Faeries spell for most of my life, my parents sometimes joking that I might be a changeling…although that was quite the astute observation on their part, I was most likely just what I like to call a “bug Kid": meaning the kind of kid that grew up covered in dirt, converting hollow stumps into makeshift cauldrons, and quite honestly wreaking havoc over my backyard. It's in these things that I find my comfort, endlessly fascinated by the ever changing and unpredictable nature of the forest and its inhabitants. I guess I'll never know if that unnamable force that's kept me wrapped around natures finger my whole life was due to me actually being a changeling, or maybe the work of Faeries whispering subliminal messages into my ears as a child. I am currently studying to become a nature conservationist, so ya know? Fair play Faeries…”

Yep!
So Cellbit is an Enigma Fairy, and his first ever case was him investigating who was stealing all of the Cooking Fairies’ silverware/cooking utensils. Roier is a Cooking Fairy, and he didn’t know Cellbit at the time, so he immediately started smacking the shit out of Cellbit with a spoon when he caught Cellbit snooping around the kitchens. But then BAM! His spoon was gone!! So Cellbit and Roier had to work together to solve the mystery. Along the way, they became Best Friends(tm), and they just kept hanging out after that. Gradually, and without noticing, they started getting closer and closer until they were dating, and then they, of course, got married.

The Best Album Per Year for Sixty Years
No-one asked for it, of course, but I do like making lists, so here's me pondering what have been the best Long Players in the album artform the past 60 years. I originally tried to keep it to just one per year, but many years that proved impossible: when listing multiple albums I have tried ranking them with the one I feel narrowly edges out the others first, and I use lower case to indicate an album that is not at the same level as others on the list but was the best I've heard from that time.

Despite being a prince in his brother’s precious kingdom, Leona was more of a phantom in the shadows with the way he appeared and disappeared throughout the day, avoiding the incessant duties the royal family was expected to complete as leaders of the kingdom. If Leona wasn’t king, then what was the point in working in a position he did not wish to have? He’d much rather doze off in the palace’s serene gardens or order around his gentleman-in-waiting, Ruggie Bucchi, rather than waste his days in a drab, old meeting room with nobles who were only there to suck up to the king’s power through Leona. It sickened him and sent a bile taste to the back of his throat. Being around those leeching nobles, he means. Each one wanted the same as the last: money, control, the king’s place at the throne—you know, the usual needy desires a noble can have.
Although, the young prince of Sunset Savanna had come to realize that you had been drastically different. As the heir to a dukedom in a far off land, you were a common visitor at the Kingscholar’s palace, with you attending each and every meeting, ball, and social gathering his brother’s kingdom had to offer. You were kind, so intelligent, an overachiever in every way possible, took part in royal gatherings, and—
It pissed him off. Every smile on your face was fake, every word you spoke was hollow, and each thing you did felt so… manipulated. Like you were a marionette while your dukedom was the puppeteer. The picture perfect heir to a controlling duchy. Leona could see right past your goody-goody facade and he hated it. He despised the way you two had been chained to the orders of your families, despised the way you barely showed any authentic emotions, and despised the fact that you both had been drowning in your own misery.
Leona wanted to change that.
And so, lazily pulling you along the long, barren halls of the grandiose palace, the prince of Sunset Savanna guided you away from royal grounds and into a mystical forest adjacent to the Kingscholar’s castle. The forest was filled with enchanting creatures and flowers alike, with pixies, magical butterflies, mysterious mushrooms, and plentiful groups of fairies adorning the forest trees with golden dust that looked like heaven. It was like a dream you wished would never end.
“I’m leaving this godforsaken place, and you’re coming with me,” Leona declared, interrupting your entranced state.
“Wait, what? Why me all of a sudden?”
Leona immediately stopped in his tracks at your words. There was no way you could be so clueless, right? I mean, you were the only other person he spoke to in the palace and the only noble he genuinely enjoyed speaking to! Were you also so blind to his obvious stares and glances back at every ball you both would attend?
The young prince sighed and thought to himself. Wow, all of these brains, but you can’t tell when a guy likes you? Pfft— The whole ordeal was laughable, really, but he realized that now was not the time to tease you about it. Maybe later, he supposed. After he dealt with your airheaded self.
“Ugh, fuck it! I can’t take it anymore,” Leona said as he gently grasped your shoulders to make you face him, while gradually inching closer to your figure intimately. His actions were so tense that even the fae flying around you two halted in the jittery energy the prince had exposed. This was completely unlike him, and he knew it. But since when did falling in love ever make sense, hm?
Leona held your body close to his as his emerald eyes bore into your own colored ones. “I’m afraid your existence in my life has tremendously done wonders to my racing heart. It’s not fair. It was never fair. I may have to ask for yours in return.”
“Leona, I—”
"Just take my hand, herbivor. Don't you dare second guess yourself and come with me. I know you hate this place just as much as I do.”
Perhaps a knight in shining armor isn’t all a tale needs to be saved. Perhaps what it truly needs is two suffocating souls, lost and bleary, finding each other in the masses and pulling one another out of the shadows they had found themselves in. There was no sole “savior” because the two souls would save each other.
A happily ever after only you and Leona could create for yourselves.

Author’s note: Hoist the Colors may eventually inspire fiction. Most likely will and I’ll gladly write it. But right now, it’s a role-playing game setting with what I hope is an interesting take and look at an “Alternate History” of Earth. It isn’t really “steampunk”, though I can see how someone would get that impression. For me, it’s more a “gaslamp fantasy” set on Earth of 1722 in all it’s historical mess… that I’ve stirred up even more!
So, with that said, I thought I’d cover the playable species and cultures players will have to choose from. Starting with the Thayans. So if you’re interested in worldbuilding for a setting, enjoy!
Thayans
They’re a people of magic, mystery and determination.

Thayans are one of the many species that appeared after the Crossing’s Fall disaster. A charismatic folk of tight-knit communities, they hail from Afalon Isle in the mid-Atlantic, southwest of the Azores. The same island that crashed to Earth after the Otherworld shattered.
At first, they remained hidden, but not for long. Thayans, or ‘pixies’, were the first Otherworld survivors to make themselves known to the world. They were also the first to be displaced by the Mid-Atlantic War that erupted after Afalon’s arrival.
Thayan refugees fled the war and scattered to far lands. Some settled in Ireland, others in the Caribbean. Some landed on the North American shores of the League of Nations. A determined few refused to leave their island home and rebuilt towns on northern Afalon. Some looked to rebuild their lost civilization. Others turned to immigrating into human nations to start over.
All But Human

At a glance, it’s easy to mistake them as human. They look human in many ways with a human-like face and body. In comparison, the typical thaye is only slightly shorter than a human. Thayans average about four inches shorter than most humans and have a thinner build.
Their hair color is like anyone else from black to brown, blond to red. Also, their hair does turn gray as they age. In the face, they look every bit human, but their eyes are a different story. Thayan eye color spans any color imaginable. Some are human colors of amber, green, brown or gray. But red, copper, gold, and even jade are not unheard of. Thayan males also have facial hair. Beards are often neatly trimmed affairs among the men.
As for complexion, that is no different than the average human. Which is quite a surprise given thayan blood is green instead of red. Their ears however are another story. Thayan ears are slightly pointed with the traditional faerie point. But the shape is not that pronounced and easy to overlook.
Out of all their similarities and differences, the one feature that sets them apart are their wings. Thayans possess delicate, yet durable, dragonfly-like wings that let them fly. Most assume that thayans possess hollow bones, like a bird. This is just not true. Thayan bones are lighter than a humans but still just as strong. Their bones and wings are strong enough to let a thayan carry themselves, a backpack, and even a human with them in flight. This is a startling surprise given their thinner stature.
Their wings have another characteristic and that’s a yellow-gold dust they shed in small amounts. Humans call this ‘pixie dust’ while thayans refer to it as ‘mana dust’. No matter the name, it is a soft, powdery dust that has a faint glow. For the average person, it’s either a curiosity or a nuisance. humans call ‘pixie dust’. This magical substance is a powder-like form of solid magic. A mysterious substance that, if collected in large amounts, aids anyone from human to thayan wizards alike in the practice of magic.

Backstory: Mother Dove is mysteriously losing her magic and dying and Tinkerbell left in search of a way to heal Mother Dove, or find a new source of pixie dust on the mainland. She has a bag of pixie dust with her she can use for her magic, but is slowly running out and has to rely on her inventions more and more. She has to be the tinker who fixes everything, before her light fades for good.

"The traditional metaphysics of Elfland lie at the heart of true Witchcraft, a body of ancestral faery teachings and arts which formed a hidden tradition transmitted down the centuries across Europe and the British Isles. The historical documentation provides ample evidence of the witches' trafficking with Faerie and their close associations with faery beings and the people of the Sidhe, 'the lordly ones in the hollow hills'.
The underworldly realms of the Sidhe is conceived of asbeing literally 'beneath' the earth, 'underneath' the surface phenomena of nature and middle-earth as an underlying depth-dimension of archetypes and endlessly regenerated potentialities. This is the spiritual landscape of Elfhame where the 'People of Peace' dwell, known to the Irish Celts as Tir Andomain and Tir Na n'Og, the Annwvyn of Welsh tradition and in Teutonic lore, the kingdom of Hel. In the mediaeval period the chthonic realm was known as the Land of Faerie.
In the Netherworld we descend to the very roots of being, into the faery radiance which emanates from the haunted mounds; concealed in the depths is the secret source of generation, death and rebirth for it is the place where the souls of the dead reside between incarnations according to traditional lore. There, the dead are restored and renewed by partaking of the sacred fruit, the apples of the Otherworld plucked from Mother Holle's subterranean orchard or from the trees of Ynys Afallon, ruled over by Morgan Le Faye. The Silver Branch or Craebh Sidhe, which allows passage into Elfland, is a bough upon which three silver apples hang, emitting faery music that entrances all who hear it.
The 'Hooded Ones', the land-spirits and faery ancestors of ancient Britain; their pointed hoods became the caps of the pixies.
Our ancient forebears possessed a perpetual awareness of other worlds and states of reality which at particular times and places could break through' into our world, often in eerie and eldritch ways. There were also traditionally known loci where the worlds touched, places of intercommunication between middle-earth and Elfland such as trees, mounds, hills, caverns, watercourses, pools and wells. At these sites passage between the worlds could, and still can be effected through the use of the faery arts.
The kingdom of the Sidhe exists outside and beyond the cycles of space/time which govern the material universe - it is well known that travellers to Faerie have spent years there only to find mere minutes have elapsed upon their return to our world. Those who reside for a night in that land may find that centuries have passed when they come back into middle-earth. Elfhame lies outside the circles of time and this mysterious atemporality is the inner key to the metaphysics of rebirth and the cyclic reincarnation of ancestors in their tribal and familial descendants.
Elfland is inhabited by a diversity of intelligences ranging from the divine beings and godlings within the earth to divinized ancestral-souls and non-human faery-entitities, theriomorphs and ornithomorphs. All these beings can be accurately described as faeries, for they all inhabit that mode of existence which is utterly 'other' - the wild and mysterious faery 'state'.
According to the inner doctrine of the faery-faith, the post-mortem soul descends into Elfhame and enters into the state of the Sidhe, sojourning as a faery in the otherworld whilst awaiting the right cyclical patterns which will enable it's earthly rebirth to occur, usually in the body of a clannic descendant. The spirits of the dead thus become mystically unified with the inner heart of the land, merging with particular loci such as hills or trees for the world of the Faerie is the inherent spiritual dimension which exists concealed within the natural landscape as it's inner archetypal reality.
The human' and the 'faery are the two poles of our being between which we oscillate through our transmigrational cycles of rebirths, our countless discarnations and incarnations. In other words, the Sidhe are ourselves awaiting birth in middle-earth and we ourselves are the Sidhe awaiting our return to Elfhame. The faerie Craft is concerned with regaining the totality of our awareness, bridging our human and faery natures and activating the 'Sight of the Two Worlds' or 'Second Sight', the faculty of trance-seership and direct spiritual vision into Elfhame.
The dead thus become faeries between incarnations and certain souls in the underworld may, in time, undergo a complete faery metamorphosis and no longer incarnate as human-beings - these are the 'Master Men' of Scottish witch-lore. The identification of the faery- faith as an ancestral cultus clarifies many hitherto obscure problems and allows us an insight into the destiny of the soul and it's post mortem relationship with the noumenal and natural environments. The Faery Rade or Sluagh Sidhe rides out at Halloween, the liminal and intercalendary time of the hallowed ancestral souls. This Faery Host manifests along the dead straight 'faery passes' which link the sepulchral tumuli which are their forts, changing their hunting-grounds at the four Quarter-Days. These 'faery-roads' are a Celtic analogue to the Dutch 'death-roads' and German 'Geisterweige', the Saxon 'deada waeg', the tracks of the Wild Hunt and the spectral Black Dog and the traditional English Corpse-Roads', 'Coffin-Paths' and 'Church-ways' - they are all funereal lines of spirit-movement which link burial places, graveyards and mounds. On the west coast of Ireland much oral folk-lore makes the identity of the faeries as the souls of the departed very clear for they say that if you have many dead friends you will have many good faeries about you. The Sidhe of Irish tradition and the Elves in German folklore, are the chtonic faery-ancestors, divinized souls who have passed below the land and who exert a subtle influence upon the living in whom they await rebirth, mysteriously informing their minds and bodies from the depths of the hidden kingdoms. As Jacob Grimm astutely observed: "The dead were known to the Norsemen as elves."
