CS Fic Rec Monday: "High Scores, Exes, and Neon Lights" by: @xarandomdreamx

I have been slacking and not having the chance to do Monday recs the way I would like, but this week I have some for you that I have recently enjoyed.

This first fic is a modern AU in three parts, featuring not only Emma and Killian, but a whole crew of their friends and loved ones - including a Liam who is alive and well. He and Killian own a bar where, when Emma and her friends turn up, things in the Jones brothers' lives are turned upside down in the very best of ways. I had the pleasure of beta-reading this as well as just enjoying it as a reader, and I loved seeing it as it grew and developed. It had moments of laughter, heartache, sweetness and feels - everything rolled into one. Don't miss it!!

Let's spread some love 😘. What are some of your top five favourite cs fics?

Thanks for the ask, nonnie! However, I have to admit—I couldn't limit myself to just 5 fics! There's WAY too many good ones in this fandom.

So here's a rundown of some of my all-time faves, though I'm positive I'm missing some. Here goes, in no particular order:

break me by @thisonesatellite. Just—the coolest supernatural story and I just LOVE how she wrote Killian in this, as angsty as it is.

Given the Choice by @iverna. There are lots of good 3B canon divergence stories out there and this is hands-down my favorite.

The Path that Moonbeams Make by @madlymel. This one goes all the way back to S2 and is a fair bit angsty and whumpy, but just SO gorgeous. (If you like it, there's some great art for it here by @cocohook38.)

Dark Horse by @initiala. Absolutely stunning modern AU that is also so charming (with the right amount of perfectly done angst).

Days of Future's Past by @optomisticgirl. B is a master world builder and it shows here, with this absolutely incredible time-travel story.

The Masks We Wear by @katie-dub. CS Superhero AU wherein they both have to keep their secret identity from each other. Delicious and SO well done.

Make You Feel Good by @phiralovesloki. I could put so many more of hers on here (as goes for just about every author on this list) but this one is just so FUN. (Rated very M and probably the best magical gender swapping fic out there.)

The Librarian by @mryddinwilt. One of my FAVORITE Cursed!Killian stories, partly because she changed him more than you typically see with that trope, and also because she gave him GLASSES.

Acquainted with the Night by @caprelloidea. Absolutely swoon-worthy Dark CS in a no-curse AU. I LOVE ME some good Dark CS and this is IT, y'all.

The Fluffy Problem by @ineffablecolors. This one also goes back to S2(ish) and is, quite literally, pure fluff. Also proof that CS will fall in love in any way, shape, or form.

Not One of Those Stories, also by @ineffablecolors (she has SO MANY GOOD STORIES btw). The gold—er, silver—standard when it comes to older!Killian stories. Perfectly slipped into a modern setting. I just re-read it again and, ugh— YES.

I could honestly go on and on with more fics (especially older ones!). But if you don't mind some digging, there's a lot of good stuff in my CS fic rec and CSFRM tags.(like, ANCIENT stuff, and there were a good two years of fics before I got active in the fandom.) There are so many gems out there—keep on digging!

CS Fic Rec Monday

One of my favorite writers in the fandom is @welllpthisishappening​ , and while I can confidently rec all of her fics, today I am highlighting this one that was her entry in the Captain Swan Supernatural Summer event last year. This unique story gives an alternate version of the Enchanted Forest, the curse, and Dark Hook. It is really difficult to put this story into words, it is so good! As I was making a picset for this, I realized just how much she packed into this story. She features almost every character we know and love from Once, not just the ones I chose here. And like always, she writes the most beautiful found family in this story. Enjoy!

I’m finally getting in on fic rec monday and kicking it off with some fic fanart because I was drawing it anyways.

You should read about Beth in A Once and Future Thing and in Ro’s Little Pirates series.

There are some amazingly sweet moments throughout of CS trying to raise their kids but with all the trouble you would expect from their offspring. But, A Once and Future Thing gets a special shout out for using the back to the future trope to dig into some heart wrenching parallels and themes as a troubled Adult Beth traipses behind an unknowing Captain Swan in the past. Beth is a fascinating character in her own right and her own rogue partner in crime, Jim Hawkins, makes this adventure all the better.

CS fic rec Monday

Uhm, so, i know i’m new, but it’s time i got in on @csficrecmonday.  And just to clarify:

i know i don’t read enough.  i know i don’t reblog enough.  i know i don’t kudos and like and comment and whatever else enough.

You’re all wonderful and amazing and i just don’t have enough hours in the day to work and read and write – AND IT’S DRIVING ME CRAZY.

Anyway.  i just wanted to tell you that if i haven’t reacted /commented /liked /recced, it’s only because you’re still on my reading list and i am doing my level best to get around to you.  YES, YOU.  (My reading list is now so long that i’m never going to die.)

But when i do get around to reading, i find all these lovely stories, and here are three which i love.  These stories will shred you in the best possible way - and then put you back together at the end, better than you were before.

I’d Know You Anywhere - by @snowbellewells

This story, guys.  It’s a witness protection fic that starts out with a bang, then rolls back slowly, gives you a moment to breathe and get to know the characters.  And then it punches you in the face with violence and plot and danger, loss, misguided notions of chivalry, and finally redemption.  AND a happy end.  i love a spot of violence, and i love it even more when that violence is absolutely organic and makes perfect sense in the world of the story, and this does.  There is nothing gratuitous about it at all, it is a perfect storytelling element.  And i absolutely love lost souls finding solace in each other, and this has all of that, too!  And i am SO HERE FOR IT.  Absolutely epic.

If I Could See Your Face Once More - by @shireness-says

This is now my official headcanon for 5B.  SO AWESOME.  Pain and loss and heartbreak and true love and a happy end so achingly beautiful it just soothes your soul.  i absolutely adore stories which break your heart over and over and yet leave you begging for more, and this does.  It is beautifully written, it is an amazing take on S5, it is what should have happened, dammit, it will pull each of your heartstrings to the breaking point -- and then wrap an absolutely gorgeous conclusion around you like a blanket and everything will be all right with the world.  Absolutely incredible.

Their Way by Moonlight - by @profdanglaisstuff

If you haven’t read her stuff, START RIGHT NOW.  Her writing is like dark chocolate cake and music - rich, gorgeous, and sinfully delicious.  i confess that i love everything of Saira’s i have read so far, but this story.   THIS STORY.  It’s a Cursed Storybrooke and an alternate take on 3B and it’s fantastic.  i personally can’t write a description to save my life, and Saira will set a scene and put you INSIDE of it, until you hear the leather creak and and smell the rain.  And then.  Comes The Story.  The characters are so real they burst from the page, the writing just sings, the smut is a vehicle for absolute love and the most beautiful and complete way two people can connect, the plot will wrap around you like a vine and not let go, and then there is an EPIC WITCH FIGHT. i love this story with everything i have, and even though it’s a WIP - please go read it.  It already has everything you could want and more, i promise. Absolutely amazing.

CS Fic Rec Monday: "The Scars We Bare" by: @piinfeathers

This two shot 5b divergence is full of the best kind of angst and whump - right up my alley! 😅😉 I love how Steph reimagined Emma’s trip into the Underworld to find Killian and their trial to return to life together. It really had so much more emotional impact than all the side character plots that were going on in that arc in canon. At any rate, this is a great read, you’ll be all caught up in it, and if you missed it, it’s time to give it a chance!

Plot: Emma Swan doesn’t do kids. Or, more accurately, she hasn’t done kids. But when a friend in need asks her to do kids - more specifically teach them - Emma dips her toes into the education field. Her first foray into substitute teaching is for Mr K. Jones, who proves to be a great asset in this whole “learning to teach” thing. It helps Emma understand what her friends get out of the job: that the best life lessons sometimes come from students and a nice little note.

All she knows is that the two pink lines on her pregnancy test just raised the stakes.

Given The Choice by @winterbythesea: Post-Neverland canon divergence in which everyone returns to Storybrooke with Pan safely trapped in Pandora's Box, and Emma tries to come to grips with her strange new life featuring pirates, parents, and flying monkeys.

(I’m behind on updates, but I know it’s brilliant because of who the author is.)

Chills and Thrills by @captainstudmuffin: Emma Swan has built her entire career on her reputation as a serious force in the ghost hunting world. When the network executives backing her paranormal investigation show decide that a co-episode with another team is needed to boost ratings, can she swallow her pride and learn to work with the group that makes a mockery of her profession? And what will this partnership mean when the other team's frontman, Killian Jones, isn’t the person he seems to be on television?

(On trend with me, I’m also behind on this one but have read the first chapter and a half and the detail alone is literally the greatest...among all of the other things that make it great!)

Though there is hesitance in his gaze, his shoulders are set with determination, and she knows that ensuring his little brother’s well-being is the only thing that matters to him right now.

He grins, a heart-stopping stretch of perfectly white teeth, and she bites down her answering smile. It won't do to be attracted to the choreographer. Of course, then he walks away, and she can't stop herself from admiring the curve of his obviously toned backside. He winks at her over his shoulder, catching her in the act of ogling him, and her cheeks burn.

She is so screwed.
