Tractors Bind

Now that the second copy has arrived safety with @lieu42, I wanted to show off my bind of Tractors.

The cover is a sage green linen/cotton blend for the spine and card-stock for the rest.

You can find the typeset for this bind here, it's formatted for letter sized paper. There are 300 pages total (150 sheets of paper) and it's in signatures of 24 pages.

Next time I want to try doing detailing on the covers and maybe a dust cover? I discovered while working on this one that getting specific materials are a pain but hopefully I can find the stuff to do this.

After seeing the little tutorial for bookbinding by @niennanir, and realizing I had most of the supplies already or could get them easily (and fairly cheaply, too,I ended up finding a couple nice sales like glue for $0.50 a bottle and nice textweight bright white paper for $20 instead of $35-40), I finally nerved up enough to try a hand binding of a fic. I picked one of my own (a 20k one, but split into 4 chapters, so I'll just do 1 chapter per booklet), and got to work.

Bug helped me weigh down the first one. It's currently drying into the cover, while the second one does its first dry. It was actually very easy, especially once I saw it in person. I might do a few others of my own.

A Black Mass Over Highway Ninety Typeset

recently I typeset A Black Mass Over Highway Ninety by @greenvlvetcouch. I was originally going to wait for the epilogue to come out but due to popular demand have typeset it as is and will make a separate one to include the epilogue when it is done (and a typeset with just the epilogue on its own).

Firstly, a few things regarding this typeset:

Please do not use for-profit sites to print this fic. This generally applies to any fic I typeset (so if you do please don’t tell me), but is also specified by the author of this work in their notes on the fic. Instead you can bind it by hand or find a bookbinder who will do it for the cost of materials. I have a list of some resources for bookbinding in the typesets section on my page.

There is artwork from the fic inside this typeset so make sure you are printing in colour for the best quality.

there were also a ton of links embedded in the end notes so I’ve just turned those into shortened url’s and added them in brackets to their respective notes

I usually put the chapter summary just in the appendix but really liked the formatting for these ones so they’re also at the start of each chapter for this fic. I haven’t read this fic so hopefully that works well with the flow of the story.

There are four documents in the folder, all 6″x9″. There is the full fic as both a word document and a PDF, and the two other PDFs are Volume One and Volume Two. The full fic should be a fine length on its own but if you want is thinner volume one and two are for you.

For the cover/title I went directly to the Bachelor logo for inspiration, replacing the classic wedding band with, of course, the ring of keys used in the fic!

The cover is heat embossed by hand, in the same way as my previous bind of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. For that bind I went pretty maximalist, and for THIS one I wanted to aim for a really clean looking, simple but elegant look. I think it turned out pretty good! I ended up going for the white and gold look to match First House Gideon vibes

I also tried rounding and backing here again, which turned out somewhat mixed. I'm still working on my technique for that, but peep the nice yellow headbands to match the endpapers!

Overall, this was SO fun to do, and a great excuse to revisit & spend good time with a fic I love.

Sandcastles: Year One, A Sandman Fan-Fic Anthology ⏳

To celebrate The Sandman's one year anniversary this past weekend (how has it been a year already!?), I started a self-indulgent project and decided I wanted to take a crack at typesetting for the very first time.

So, I'm very proud to present: Sandcastles, an 180-page digital anthology that celebrates some of my favorite Sandman fics from the past year! Sandcastle collects shorter fics ranging from gen to mature, and is print-ready and available to be downloaded for free. Through this anthology, I hope others can get the same joy from these fics the same way I did over the past year (think of it as a glorified fic rec list)! (And, if anyone's interested, the print-ready files are available for download as well, if anyone wanted to print their own copy of Sandcastles!)

this is the one. the most popular fic in the harry potter fandom. the fic that got me into fanfiction. the fic that i sobbed to for months after reading it.

i tried to bind this three separate times over the last two years and bro the first two sucked ASS. it was legit the very first fic i tried to typeset which is like, not the greatest thing to start off with LMAO. it looked funky, i hadn’t fixed any of the spacing, my footers didn’t match the text font or size. it was very much a baby binding.

the second one was my first time using a cricut and there is a very steep learning curve w the cricut, especially in creating designs that aren’t too complex or too plain. i tried to copy one of the popular printable book jackets and omg i spent weeks modifying my designs and printing and reprinting on my cricut and it looked like trash when i was done.

so finally, we have come to this.

i got really into quartos during the winter and was like omg the editing process for this would be so much more manageable if i broke it down into years! so then i did lol. it allowed me to customize each chapter into sections so i could add the chapter title to the footers, and break down graphics into separate years so i didn’t have 100 pages in one canva file. it was just a lot easier to feel accomplished having broken it down bc this fic is a MONSTER.

every chapter heading is the same - just the swirl. i gilded all the chapter titles using toner reactive foil and my laminator (she broke in the middle of this project. i ended up having to buy another laminator, and about 3 packs of foil from icraft. this is my most expensive fic binding to date🫠). i included the songs ms.kingbean put at the top of every chapter, and the bootleg tapes and christmas special.

i am seriously so proud of how this turned out, and can’t believe it’s actually done. sorry this is super long, but this really was a labor of love. they’re not perfect, i’m still really bad at measuring and cutting straight lines, but i’m satisfied. really satisfied.
