underrated part of the unwanted guest is dulcinea knowing full well that palamedes and camilla are a package deal. like, she’s in a weird emotional situationship with palamedes, and she is aware that means that she is Also, By Extension, in a weird emotional situationship with camilla. and she’s quite happy about it

25.04.2024 📖 today's anthy!
i need finish reading this book because i got half way through and i really wanted to look up fanart because everything described sounded so cool but then i got spoiled for the ending of the first book and it just turned me off of reading it 😭 i really like gideon and harrow though and i was enjoying the book a lot !! so im going to give it another try on the train on my way to see my friend. theyr the one who gifted the book to me actually haha
[ID by @fagofgod: three versions of a drawing of anthy from revolutionary girl utena. she is wearing a pink and white jacket and a pair of frayed jeans. she is sitting on the floor outside, leaning against a tree, holding up a book next to her face. she is looking up to the side with wide eyes and raised eyebrows, lips parted. the book she is holding is gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir. there is a colourful charm hanging from the book, presumably acting as a bookmark.
the first version of the drawing shows it in full. the second version zooms in to show the frayed end of anthy's pants as well as the book she is holding. the third version zooms in to show the book and anthy's face. end ID.]

1 week and several "maybe i will write my thoughts at some point eh maybe not" moments later and i think i can summarize my central issue with the book as this:
how and also WHY do you go about writing a book that thematically hinges on feminism and the power fantasy of rebelling against the constraints of misogyny while only including ONE female character of any particular note or depth and NO compelling relationships between women. how and why.
anyway, more rambling thoughts below:
"The good" of this book is mostly that the concept is at its base, pretty cool (big robots fight monsters! everything is based off of chinese culture!), and everything absolutely falls apart from there.
The politics are simplistic, twitter soundbite level theory and are so unsubtle I feel like I'm being repeatedly hit in the face with a brick. There is WAY too much going on plot wise, to the detriment of the book -- it feels very unfocused, I still don't understand why the media circus story line was even there except for as bait for people who liked the hunger games for the wrong reasons and have been thirsting for more ever since.
The main characters are simply uninteresting, in part because the writing goes to such lengths to inform us how developed they already are. They are repeatedly made to give mini-speeches so that we the audience know how politically and socially progressive they are, this not only makes them really really uninteresting (as they have NO personal growth or change wrt these beliefs left to do, so like why should I care about them) it is entirely divorced from the society that raised them in a way that is just deeply unbelievable.
The worldbuilding is simply bad. next topic.
The main character is canonically disabled, but disability as an axis of opression or as an identity is never explored in a way that feels confusing and honestly counter to the books apparent insistence on smacking you in the face with theory. it's weird!!!!
I read a reddit review that described this as a "power fantasy", and I think that's a good description. it IS a power fantasy, about what if you were really fucking angry about misogyny and then got to kill and torture people about it AND got 2 hot boyfriends out of the deal (and didn't even have to deal with any bitches and nags women while you did it). And like, that's fine to enjoy but it's just. not a compelling story. end post.
well i finished iron widow 😐
