OK THIS PART GOES HARD AS FUCK

I remember reading this for the first time and the line "I could carpet bomb him (sonic) any day" hit my like like a ton of fucking bricks.

but thats not the most noteworthy point here, it's the explanation as to why he doesn't. While generally this comic focuses on why sonic hasn't just killed eggman yet, this goes into why eggman hasn't just killed sonic yet, a question I very much feel needs an answer more then the former,

I think this is the first time we've really gotten insight as to why eggman operates the way he does with sonic, actually addressing why he hasn't just killed sonic in his sleep. This is on some level to eggman a game for him to win. He can't just kill sonic he has to do it his way or it's not a real victory.

Sure this could be inferred through some of his actions in games but it's nice to see it properly addressed

Do you ever fucking think about the ending of the Unicron series. Do you ever think about how it wasn’t a weapon or a battle that saved Earth from extinction but empathy? Do you ever think about how it was a single organic being at the center of Unicron, aching for the billions of lives (of his own species and others) that were slaughtered by Cybertronians and how Unicron is a representation of vengeance but also grief. Do you ever fucking think about how Optimus walked right up to that aching soul and said “you’re right to hate us and maybe we do deserve to die for what we did to you” despite how easy it would be to hate this person for nearly eradicating all Cybertronians? Do you think about how the moment of Unicron’s defeat happened not because Optimus defeated this lonely being by attacking him, but because Optimus embraced him and told him to remember the name of his long dead daughter-- to focus on love for a person he cared about rather than hatred and perpetuating the cycle of violence? Do you fucking think about how Optimus had every reason to hate this person for slaughtering innocents of his own kind but chose compassion, and choosing compassion is what saved the remnants of Cybertronians and Earth from extinction? Do you think about how Optimus sacrificed himself to save his race using the power of love? Do you ever fucking think about it????

At the risk of swinging the bat into the hornets nest for you, what is IDW missing that makes Archie the better comic to you?

The fact Sega wasn't breathing down their throat constantly so they could do whatever the hell they wanted no matter how crazy or problematic? The romance plots? The family drama plots?

(Context that Izzy knows but might be important for anyone else seeing this: I like IDW a lot, but I also missed the boat on Archie. Never read it, intimidated by the idea of trying to catch up now, but I know crazy shit went down in it.)

i think the quickest way for me to explain it is that idw just feels very sterile and low stakes for me. the ocs are cute and all but they're concepts to me, not insanely fleshed out or *real* feeling (which has nothing to do with age btw)

i understand why a lot of people hate archie for having too many ocs or for having penders involved but like... that doesn't negate how crazy insane and fun and dark and elaborate the content was. i have so much to work with when i think of archie as a whole because they gave so much for me to fix or modernize or even just fantastic characters (imo) like mina and fiona and their version of the hooligan characters like 💕💕💕

here's the other thing though: i LOVED metal virus. a lot. it gave me espio back, made silver a character again, got as close as it supposedly could when making sonic traumatized, gave amy a fuckton of responsibility and maturity like she deserves, but also added a lot of depth and newfound appeal and appreciation of characters like cream and charmy and the babylon rogues. tangle and whisper naturally weaved themselves into this arc by having touching and angsty moments without blatantly trying to steal panel time or fan appeal from the secondary cast

my main criticism of metal virus? it takes the older dark robotisizing arc mainly known from archie and underground but takes away one significant thing: eggman being a competent and threatening villain. i LOVE evil eggman i think he deserves to be in control of something like the metal virus, but god forbid he have a skillfull bone in his body these days because now he's running from the virus just like the main cast! urgh,,, i think tinker was a fascinating moment but god i just can't stand idw eggman most of the time they make him way too pathetic so starline can make jokes about him and try to escalate things 💀

oh that's another thing, i think there's a lot of hypocrisy about the penders ocs in archie vs all the new idw characters because my initial response included a segment on how i feel like idw forces fans to love and worship every new addition to the cast even when there's little to no character development, but that feels like something everyone says about archie. i'll never forget when the preview of surge and kit came out and the fandom EXPLODED but like... i barely had anything to say? ME? SPEECHLESS BUT JUST OUT OF NEUTRALITY?!? yeah lol surge is mid to me and i can fairly but probably cruelly attribute almost all of her appeal to how everyone hates penders. oh and big pant cool. but her strength as a character is a result of the uproar caused by scourge and archie, not her own inherent value, which isn't fair in general but also not fair to her idk lol it feels like cheating.

anyways, i'd 1000% prefer messy and concerning/nauseating archie and its army of echidna ocs over the "mandate-restricted" idw which basically does the exact same thing as archie but watered down (including the ocs).

oh okay one more thing— the comics are meant to flesh out the secondary cast from the games because surprise! after 06 we don't get ensemble casts or playable characters other that sonic, so this is a compromise. SIKE! idw ocs are gonna hog panel time, and as much as i love characters like lanolin and belle (and obviously team sapphire) i literally gave up on reading idw regularly because there wasn't anything in it for me and if there was i'd hear it on tumblr and pirate the recent issue lol.

OKAY FINALLY, idgaf about comic beef i think people should enjoy whatever they want even if that means anti archie because like,,, i don't blame you. i just think that we've joked so much about "haha archie RANDOM and also PENDERS make archie BAD" but like... just because penders sucks ass it doesn't mean archie or even his work on archie is as bad as he is. archie actually has a lot of good stuff, and even the bad stuff is elaborate and interesting enough to warrant a rewrite or reinterpretation credit.

tldr; i just think idw is mid and peaked with metal arc which still had some fundamental flaws even if i loved it. i miss my funky archie cast tho

IDW SONIC READERS, PLEASE READ THIS!!!!

I am begging you. On my hands and knees. Begging. More so than anything else I’ve asked of this fandom.

Please please buy the Fang miniseries when it comes out

Don’t just read it. Buy it. I will admit that I’m very guilty of reading through a lot of IDW Sonic through…less than legal means, and I know I’m not alone in that regard. But I think it’s really important that for this miniseries in particular, you actually go out and buy the damn thing. Show your support with your dollar.

Really think about it for a second—they gave Fang his own miniseries. Fang! An underutilized, underrated fan favorite for sure, but hardly a mainstay of the series. I’m sure that this was at least somewhat prompted by Superstars, where Fang is a major antagonist…but Bean and Bark weren’t in that game, and it already received its own online promo comic prior to the game’s release (notably, with Fang as the star).

Classic Sonic stories have also exclusively been relegated to one-shots in IDW, not a full on miniseries like what Fang is getting. Basically all of the IDW Sonic miniseries we’ve gotten so far have been plot relevant side stories to the main IDW comic that focus on side characters with little to no involvement from Sonic himself. Tangle and Whisper, Bad Guys, Impostor Syndrome…the only odd man out besides this Fang miniseries is Scrapnik Island.

Really think about it for a second. FANG is getting his own focus comic BEFORE KNUCKLES.

And that’s why it’s so important that we buy it.

I think Sega is using this comic to test the waters to see if people like Fang and want to see him in more future projects—be it comics, games, or even cartoons. But there’s more to it than just that.

See, Superstars hasn’t been doing that great. I know I said in an earlier post that people seemed to like it, but I retract that statement. It was damned by faint praise at launch, and now most of the discussion I’ve seen surrounding the game revolves around its flaws (chief among them being the middling OST and that the Steam version stealth installs an Epic Games service along with the game). No sales numbers have been projected as of writing, but it’s definitely been beaten out by Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2.

So, Classic Sonic games aren’t doing too hot right now (I’m sure that many modern fans are jumping for joy at the prospect). But the classic characters are.

People really like the extended classic Sonic cast, just as much as they love the extended modern cast. From my experience, the two fan favorites are Mighty and Fang. Fang stands out to me in particular for a couple reasons: people were really upset that Sega specifically said no to Fang, Bark and Bean coming back after Ian snuck in a reference to them in IDW Sonic #3 (using their old team name from Archie, the Hooligans), and the fanmade 16-bit remake of Triple Trouble, Fang’s debut game, received private praise from many members of Sega and Sonic Team. People like Fang and the media he’s in, and Sega is starting to take notice. That’s why we’re getting this miniseries.

That’s why it’s so important that the miniseries sells well. If the big boys at Sega and Sonic Team see Superstars’ iffy reception but see Fang’s comic sell above expectations, then Sega will want to continue to use Fang (and potentially other “classic” Sonic characters as well) in more narrative driven projects. That means modern Sonic.

“But Sega won’t let any classic Sonic character into a modern Sonic project!” I hear you thinking. And to that I say, so? Sega changes its mind all the time. Remember that whole two worlds nonsense? That was thrown out with in Tailstube. Characters debuting in Boom and the comics were previously barred from the mainline games, but they’ve broken that “rule” in both Speed Battle and Frontiers. Hell, they’ve even been talked out of some of their sillier comic mandates, like characters not being able to wear different clothing.

For all their flaws, Sega does listen, and money speaks louder than anything. If this miniseries fails, Sega will just assume that people aren’t hot on Fang or the extended classic cast anymore and throw them back in the bar. But if the comic sells well, then Sega might take it as a sign that, hey, people like this character (and his two lackeys), we should put him in projects that fans are more interested in. Mighty and Ray probably wouldn’t be too far behind, especially given Mania’s success. Whether that means comics or games, modern or classic, who knows. What’s important is that it sends the right message to Sega, and they will listen to their consumers. That means us. If we don’t support this miniseries now, we might have to wait another thirty years for another chance.

This honestly wasn't part of the plan, though you both have talked about starting a family, the timing wasn't right, but that changes of course, and you both end up with a beautiful son together. You make it work, going on missions, leading crews, raising your son, it all works out.

Smiling tenderly, you enjoy the scene before Megatron finally settles the mech in his crib, quietly tucking him in tip toeing out the room, dimming the lights within and making sure the door closes quietly.

"Job well done." You praise through a whisper as he comes closer to sit beside you. "You're truly amazing with him. Sometimes I feel like you're the better parent."

"You're a terrific mother to our son as well." Megatron assures while caressing your cheek plating fondly under his broad digits, making you let out a soft purr while leaning into his affections. "We both do well for him. He's too young to face the war, but maybe by the time he's old enough to understand there won't be any war to worry about."

"We can only wait and see." You sigh fondly and gaze up at him, your smile growing a little more recognizing his lingering stare. "Is there something on your mind, my love?"

"I'm thirsty." He says through a silky tone and moves his servo towards your chest plating, tracing his digits around the edges. "Did our son leave some left over?"

It wouldn't be the first time, and you both got a guilty kink over it as well for a while now, and you respond by unclasping your chest platings, straddling his lap like a panther, full breasts naked in view for him.

"Drink up, handsome."

Wrapping your servo around his broad spike you give him a couple of strokes earning more moans from him, running you digit over his leaking tip as you press your chest more closer against his eager mouth. Once that one was drained, he moves to the next one, and this is when you retract your own panel, soaking valve ready as you lift yourself up a little and sink down onto him, stretching your channel fully as you let out a lingering moan, followed by his increased beast like sounds.

Slowly you rock you hips, feeling every pulse of his spike throbbing through you, letting out gentle mewls as you bury your face into his neck as you keep this tender movement.

Megatron moves his servo across your hips, cascading down over your aft as he continues to consume with greed, feasting and interfacing both together is a wild and fun experience.

"Feels wonderful." You whisper through a lusty tone, letting out more perky moans as you continue to skillfully rock your hips over his spike, moving a little quicker as you feel him twitch deep within you. "Frag, Megs."

He responds by groaning against your breast, denta’s softly nibbling around your perk nipple that sends an aroused pulse through you. His grip tightens and you both know you're close to an overload, and you don't hold back, giving him a few more firm grinds before feeling that electric spark pop through your systems as your fluids soak his twitching spike. sonic's desperately trying to set himself free of silver's psychokinetic powers and before silver even had the time to fully let him go, sonic is already a few meters away from the rest, from the place where they landed.

he demands that he gets on the ground quickly, he has to make sure Tails is alright, as soon as possible. and when the fox doesn't show up immediately after sonic calls out his name, when he doesn't even respond letting him know he's alright, even from afar, it's game over for sonic, or actually, game over for anyone who is responsible for putting his best friend, his brother in danger.

his worry is bottling up as he did just witness a ship (which his little brother happened to pilot) crash on metal overlord and then on the ground. he keeps on calling for him, voice clearly more concerned as he moves forward.

and then he notices it, the yellow line moving away from the wrecked ship, he notices him, flying towards the safer area. tails is there, waving at him. he seems a little banged up, but he's okay, so sonic can't help but smile feeling relieved and proud of his brother. he doesn't wait at all and praises him on the spot, showing how excited he is about Tails's achievement

My god. I've seen some HEAVY answers to this one and I love toying around with those, but as for what I actually believe in:

9) What calms them when they are upset. 

When she's angry and frustrated, she likes to destroy things. Sometimes those things are people. As for sadness and fear, I'm running away with my age regression headcannon again and saying that she likes to hide under a weighted blanket and listen to a safe, trusted love one's spark pulse as they rock her. If there's no one she considers safe, she'll play an audio file of some random spark pulse and pretend someone loves her.

5) A cherished personal belonging. 

During the war, she tried to keep no sentimental belongings ("no attachments"), but after, when she's in recovery, she holds onto the first thing given to her as a genuine act of kindness and belief in her goodness. (In IDW, a Rodimus Star; in Earthspark, a "live laugh love" framed photo of her and Dot; etc.)

Optimus:

1) Something this character is truly proud of.

Can it be someone? Because my first thought was "Bumblebee." Yes I'm on the "Dadtimus" hype train, but more than just the simple cuteness I genuinely think Optimus's pride manifests in the lives he manages to guide and protect for the better

10) How they deal with pain. 

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck you just had to hit me with this didn't you. damn. well. The answer is that he ignores it. Optimus is the #1 target of Ratchet's wrath when he comes in with three rust infections and a completely stripped joint because he played the "I'm fine, tend to others first" game for too long. It's to the point of self harm. And mental pain???????? OH, BUDDY. He just meditates on the Matrix until he loses his sense of self and slips into a state of dissociation so deep that he can function again. Sometimes he implodes and has a 2-hour meltdown in his quarters and then he just starts the buildup all over again.

13) What kind of parent they would be. 

Crying weeping foaming at the mouth clawing at the walls shaking like a little dog. Them as parents is. everythign 2 me

Anyway, Megatron is a hot mess. He oscillates wildly between being the "fun dad" and the helicopter parent. Always obsessed with knowing exactly where they are at any given moment, if their surroundings are safe, if he can trust other mechs to so much as look at them... the moment that sparkling emerges, he's unlocked an entirely new level of PTSD. Also, because he grew up with "wire mother" instead of "cloth mother," he's VERY screwed in the head and doesn't know how to give affection at first. He shows his love through acts of service and protection until he finally adjusts enough to hug and cuddle. When their sparkling becomes a teen, that's when he really hits his stride. He handles the rebellious streak and the angst with an almost supernatural grace and shocking empathy and patience.

Optimus meanwhile is a tempering, nurturing force right out of the gate. He is the Snugglemaster, always willing to provide praise and affirmations. However, he is also just as paranoid as Megatron about their safety and is also a helicopter parent. That sparkling is 2000% homeschooled and has next to NO privacy. He absolutely gets cornered by the likes of Elita and Bumblebee staging an intervention that he's going to crush his bitlet if he doesn't open up that iron grasp, and that Megatron needs a counterweight. After that, Optimus absolutely earns those "#1 Dad" mugs, and even gets Megatron to chill tf out. It's the teenage years he has to watch out for. He struggles adjusting to his sparkling's new interests and struggles and he tries but man... it takes him a long time to break out of seeing his little one with Permababy Syndrome.

4) What they would do if they had one month to live. 

Megatron is no holds barred fighting it with all her might. She'll spend the entire month searching for a cure or a solution, she'll struggle and rage and defy it every step of the way, even if it means leaving her loved ones in a time of peace. She will never go gently into that good night. It is her nature to rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Optimus, if he's not going "finally," then he's using that time to give as much closure to others as he can. Making happy memories with loved ones, tying loose ends, building things. He's already written like three separate speeches for this day, a la "when I am gone, do not lament my absence" and "when you look up at the stars, think of one of them as my spark."

Introducing; my version of Rise’s Venus de Milo!

(she/her/thon/thons) She’s about 9 ft tall since she’s equally based off of Frankenstein, IDW Venus and the OG Venus de Milo. more info about her and her life under the cut! Her Family in the Hidden City

Big Mama had her made by a scientist/patron of hers during the first 2 seasons as a synthetic competitor for her Battle Nexus, but after her change of heart in the S2 finale, she took thon in as her heiress and daughter to try and do something right for a change. It’s very hard for her. Her parenting style is a good balance of gentle and stern but she thinks praise is a good replacement for emotional vulnerability and it’s turned Venus into quite a megalomaniac. Venus just calls her “Mama” and BM calls her “Veedee” (If she calls thon “Venus,” thon’s in deep shit)

Time wise, after the movie she’s physically at age 1.5, 2 years old, though mentally thon’s about where Leo and Donnie are, 16. (Still very young, please keep in mind she is a child and has big eyes like the teenagers in the show, she’s just tall. If you sexualize her I will send you to the shadow realm. BEHAVE.)

Venus also sees the doctor that made her, Dr Shelly, as her father, and they’re quite close. She spent the first few weeks of her life in his home, mostly in his library where she filled her head with everything most people know intuitively. She often can recite information she has no memory of learning, these first few weeks were less like learning and more like remembering information but from no memories.

Venus’s closest friend & surrogate older sister is Jennika, who works as Big Mama’s assistant (and a fine artist!) under the codename “Frida.” The 2 spend most of their days on diplomatic missions in the Hidden City mafia underworld and managing/restructuring the Battle Nexus to be more ethical. Venus is a naturally studious academic who loves philosophy, literature, and of course, renaissance art, so adults tend to think she’s mature, but only Jennika really knows how naive she can be. Jennika misses her human family, so they’ve really latched onto each other.

She picked her name out herself. When thon was first revived, Shelly rushed up to her and almost addressed her with a name starting with V but stopped himself before he could say it in full. Changed his mind and said that he supposed that name probably wouldn’t fit right now. So she had a preference for a V name.

Thon’s Physiology

It’s quite the mystery how he did it, but the secret to Venus’s sentience is a machine that manages to convert any matter she digests into energy in the form of empyrean. This is why she was mostly kept a rapunzel-like secret for the first few months of her life before she had Jennika as a bodyguard. Nobody knows about her heart except herself, Jennika, Shelly and Big Mama.

If she bleeds or cries, it glows bright green, so she hates both because thon feels like she’s drawing attention to herself. She’s insecure about most of her organic parts anyway and pushes herself to appear stoney, inorganic and perfect. (The consequences of idolizing and wanting to emulate a literal goddess statue, skill issue) It’s not like her fears are completely unfounded though, she has no idea where Shelly got her dead body parts.

If she’s too stressed, the seams on her upper arms bleed and they fall off like a gecko tail. She kinda looks like the og Venus do Milo statue when that happens, it’s a bit gruesome.

To represent her need to balance the organic/inorganic parts of herself, thon’s biggest dreams vs realistic expectations for herself, her right hand is organic (and based off the 2012 turtles) while her left is robotic. (& made to look like big mama’s claws in her spider form)

Goals & wants

She wants to overthrow the council of heads and rule the Hidden City as president. (Through a democracy of course!) She sees them as ineffective and useless, she went to them during the Kraang invasion to tell them something needed to be done about the alien invaders but they did nothing and said to let the turtles handle it. She’s grateful everything turned out well but she still has a grudge against them and the way they run things. Big Mama thinks she’s silly and Jennika thinks she’s a mentally unwell, workaholic, megalomaniac but pizza supreme as her witness, thon’s gonna do it.

Thon wants to be a good, ethical leader/politician (oxymoronic, I know lmao) and sees the increasing amount of Battle Nexus estate Big Mama entrusts her with as practice for managing yokai society. She would love “the Good Place.”

She also wants to know more about Jennika and for her to reconcile with her father.

Venus’s arc

“Your life is your own, ok?!” She struggles with dehumanizing (de-turtle-izing?) herself because she believes it makes her greater, more fit to achieve her goals. When the fact that she’s a mortal, breathing, living being, that can’t possibly be anywhere near divine like thon thinks she needs to be hits her, she spirals. Thon desperately needs to learn that being imperfect is a necessary gift, that she is “the protagonist of her own life” and that you don’t need to be a great person to do great things, you just need to be a person.

She’s very studious and seen as intelligent and mature for her age, but when she’s put in real life situations after meeting her cousins, the turtles, she has to learn to to manage imperfections and embrace them.

She’s quite based off of MP100 and Barbie haha.

For this internal conflict I was inspired by how the original character’s depiction back in the 80’s was really,, dehumanizing? if that’s the right word? Misogynistic very much too. I find the message that; “no matter what other people think of you or what you think of yourself, you will never be anything more or less than a regular being” both comforting in itself and a neat subversion of the original VdM since one of my favorite aspects of Rise’s writing is how subversive it is.

I can’t wait to show you more of her! Esp how she interacts with the Mad Dogs!

Bonus; Design Details!

All the turtles have shape motifs; square, rectangle, circle, triangle, her’s is a Raindrop shape! Combined with her electric motifs she’s a bit of a storm cloud lol

The Turtles’s shells are s-shaped and follow the curvature of a human spine, I draw Venus’s shell really distorted and disproportionate to this since she’s inorganic.

Similarly, while the other turtles shells and plastrons are like boxes that contain their whole torsos, thon’s kinda just sits on top of her torso, where her plastron ends and her legs begin don’t line up. It started out as an anatomical error but i liked how it made her look distorted and off somehow. (Kinda gruesome, but it kinda helps her look like a bloated corpse, which is what she is aksjks) To be clearer, the difference between how the mad dogs’ shells/plastrons/bridges(sides) are attached to their bodies vs Venus’s is like the difference between a bodysuit and a t-shirt.

I made an analysis on how eggman seems to design his robots to percieve him as a fatherly figure in order to take advantage of the loyalty and devotion that would breed, and how I think he does it because even if Tails were to reprogram or rewire them to have free will, their inherent desire would be to serve their leader/to make their father proud. (You can read that post here)

Interestingly enough, The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog came out a few days later, and in my opinion, proved this theory of mine!

Here we see them in shirts which you can assume were either made by eggman himself, or made by one his robots. On the shirt he is literally referred to as their dad.

Here he outright says that conditioning them to have a motivation is more powerful/reliable than just programming alone. (It was pretty awesome to see a theory of mine I had just posted get proven so soon after with such similar wording, I was really excited lolol).

Minor badniks like motobugs are simply programmed to target Sonic, and we've seen in the IDW comics that they'll all revert to a neutral and docile state without anyone controlling them or upkeeping them. For all robots above that level (like Sage, and Metal), they're all conditioned to see him as a father figure and rewarded for seeking his praise and serving him. He even says that the rewards they ask for are just related to him, showing how highly they view him.

This way, no matter how many chances someone like Metal is given, he will always return to Eggman, no matter what. Of course, it does lead to some rebelling, like Orbot and Cubot ditching Eggman anytime he's defeated or things get too scary (although, they're simple assistants, so he probably didn't focus too much on their loyalty). Or like Omega turning on Eggman when he was left alone too long.

Still, you've got to admit, the success with Sage, Metal, or even the Heavy King, are easily worth the risk of losing a few.

And as always, I'd like to point out, that he does seem to actually have a desire to be both a father and a leader. He seems to have real ideas about how to better the world, like accessible public transport that values citizens instead of exclusively using the railroad system for money-producing-cargo. So I think when he conditions his robots to see him as a respectable leader, it's a real desire of his, and he actually wants to be a good one, he's just too obsessed with control and ends up aggressively taking things over and removing citizens' freedoms because he thinks he knows what's good for them better than they do. He only makes himself a father to a select few of them, and in the IDW comics when he was Mr. Tinker, it seems he had a real desire and skill in being a father to Belle the Tinkerer. He also seems to have set up a relationship with Orbot and Cubot, and seems to play card games or watch shows with them, even buys them toys just for them (Cubot had a popstar figurine in the IDW comics that supposedly belonged just to him, and when it broke they made a point of bringing it to eggman). He also mentions making the Sonic Crew into toys for Sage, and although it's just a taunt, it implies the possibility that he really does build toys for her, which again, I think building toys and amusement park rides are a real passion of his, and you can read more about it in my other post.

I'm so glad someone else brought up how insular IDW felt, I thought I was insane for thinking along the lines of a similar thing. To me IDW1 felt like a continuity made by the fandom for the fandom, and despite some of its great writing decisions it often felt flat and hollow in a lot of important aspects. The lack of communication between writers and failure to maintain basic narrative and thematic cohesion as well as characterization reminded me a lot of in-fandom arguments over interpretations and headcanons

It took on too much and stretched itself thin resulting in sidelined characters, bastardized character dynamics/relationships or forgotten plots. People praised IDW1's lore and worldbuilding but personally I don't think there was much of it at all and very little of it was to a good enough standard when you consider how long IDW held the licence. It told us a lot and yet nothing at all, which would have been a genius move had it at all been intentional– something I often found myself saying in relation to IDW1 and content inspired by it, which was around post 2010-ish give or take probably

Like I said, I firmly believe that IDW was essentially made by fandom, for fandom, but a very, very narrow cross-section of such. James Roberts, who was arguably the architect for most of it, was a fanfic writer and someone who wanted to make elements of his fanfics canon. Many of the writers were buddy-buddy with TFWiki moderators and the dingus behind Shortpacked, oftentimes parroting their opinions, which was that if you didn't like what they were making, you were a chud or a creep that wanted the entire brand to be Kiss Players. Especially as romance became more and more of a focus on the series, the idea was not "This is boring, I want to see robots punching each other and blowing things up", but "I don't want to see this because it's gay", which is a far easier position to defend. Even when they lost the license, Kit Harrison of IDW insinuated that the complaints were all homophobic in nature.

As an aside, while I think Kiss Players was terrible, it was literally nothing but a side-story manga and some collector's toys. That would be like me saying all the Western-created Transformers media is garbage because of The Car Wash of Doom, Afterdeath, that scene in Age of Extinction where the guy spells out the Romeo and Juliet Law in detail, the complete waste of Sir Anthony Hopkins that was The Last Knight, The Rebirth, numerous parts of Cyberverse, the WFC Trilogy, etc.

Anyway, because the audience was so narrow, it made sense that the audience that it did cultivate was so passionate about the material, but Greek to any audience outside of it, resulting in low sales and general dismissal from a casual audience. Any similarities to how fanfic is written, especially fanfic that has an active follower community and people addressing the work in progress, were purposeful, because that was the world that the writers came from, and the world that they were used to.

And then there were the attempts to integrate those ideas into shows, as shown by WFC not getting a sequel because Netflix said no, as well as Cyberverse and now Earthspark toys rotting on shelves in your local Ollies or Lot Less.

My conclusion remains the same. IDW was overly insular, fanfic-style writing, for people who liked that, and they could not care one iota about anyone outside of that little circle. Especially if you were a fan of super robots, humans that weren't complete jerks, or the mystic elements of the Transformers mythos. And this is why now even Duke's miniseries pretty much outsells anything that IDW published. (To be fair, Duke's miniseries is pretty good).

Hi there, I just wanted to ask your opinion on this matter, I currently have been a downer on the sonic franchise, with Flynn, IDW being canon?? And sonic fans. And the problem is I don’t want to take a break on the franchise, because I love sonic. It’s been one of my favorite franchises, growing up. But it’s hard to ignore the issues, with the fans hating the games and praising Flynn constantly. So what should I do?

Focus on the games you like. It's what I do.

Stay away from the fandom, blacklist Flynn's name, rekindle your appreciation by playing older games.

When I'm sad about the fandom dismissing the games or Flynn spreading misconceptions, I boot up Advance 3 again because it makes me smile :)

Or, hey, today it's 3&K's 30th anniversary! Great time to replay it again!

Or whatever your own comfort game is :D

My philosophy is that no one can take away your experiences and the feelings tied to them. You don't need to stay updated if the situation makes you miserable. It's okay to take a break: I distanced myself from Sonic in the 2013-2017 period because, well, nothing that appealed to me was coming out. I have unofficially distanced myself since Frontiers as well - I could feel that game and the discourse surrounding it breaking me, and it wasn't pleasant. But seeing Sonic merch still makes me undescribably happy, so I know that my love for the blue boy has not diminished :>

my interpretation of the Eggdaddy and Metal SONic dynamic is based on the games first and foremost, with inspiration taken from other media's depictions of it that feel accurate and faithful enough for me to apply in my own stuff too

I LOVE this part in Archie where he's like "aren't you excited to play a part in helping daddy humiliate and kill? >:D" Eggman being thrilled to involve Metal in fucked up shit is my favorite part about the version I like and write, so this is perfect to me 💜

even better is that it's what actually leads to this next panel that's often taken out of context, it's specifically why his boy brings him joy 🤖❤️🥚

and I adore the way he affectionately calls him a murderous machine

and his "heartless weapon of misery and despair", being perfect because he thinks and attacks viciously! IT'S BEAUTIFUL 💕

there's similar in IDW when he specifically praises Metal for punching Sonic in the face and makes him "destroy for daddy"

I also take a bit of inspiration from IDW in other areas, from the way Metal talks about having the rebelliousness programmed out of him

I like how his deep dark devotion to Eggman is based on that with the "I serve the Eggman Empire. the only one who can truly rule it is Eggman" and "I'll sift through the world's ashes to find him if I have to"

I like how his software demands battle and conquest so his desire is to be dangerous no matter what. Eggman doesn't want his boy going soft and/or rogue on him, he ensures he'll always desire violence 🥰

also in Archie I like how he had a kill switch in case of any defiance so he can stay obedient in his control no matter the objective

I also really like the part in IDW where Eggman figured that Metal was feeling overlooked and a bit jealous for wanting in on the action and encouraged him to feel this way. Eggman likes how it makes Metal act to please him, being delighted when he scolded Rough and Tumble for failing.

I'm taking a bit of inspiration from that for how I imagine he'd feel around Sage and others too whenever they get any action and duties over him and make it a bit competitive as a result, which I touched on more here

then taking inspiration from the actual games the most overall of course, this type of affection and praise is conditional from Eggman and he's much more often ranging from uncaring to cruel towards him in punishment, as shown in this segment of my video

he will punish him in various ways when he fails or betrays him, such as removing his voice chip, leaving him at the scene, or deactivating him, etc as some of these examples show. but he can bring him back whenever he sees him useful.

but then taking inspiration from the Sonic Official post too, Metal is shown to be reprogrammed to have the rebelliousness programmed out of him so he feels "unconditional love" for Eggman and seeks his "fatherly approval", which can keep him loyal regardless of treating him like he does in the games.

so before you can say "there he goes taking inspiration from comics again and game Eggman isn't as evil and cruel" or something, the actual game canon is where he's cruelest towards him and he's never as nice and praising or affectionate in it and it's what I'm basing my concept on most.

so I imagine the Archie example of him hugging Metal in glee in the context of his excitement to use his prized creation in his plans with Metal loyally and successfully helping him fuck shit up, is what could get that more positive reaction out of his game self too. it's a way for it to happen at all that feels like it would fit, while still keeping the most important game canon in mind.

idw optimus with a cute fem human that helps him out with organizing data pads and cleaning up, almost acting like a secretary to him. and then behind closed doors, his human absolutely just wants more of his attention and loves displaying her affection to him with face kisses and nuzzles. she gets the honor of seeing him with his mask off

You were the epitome of the perfect pet and assistant to Optimus, but behind closed doors when you were alone with your owner, he got no rest.

"Tell me how I've done," You said with a cute grin and the Autobot leader smiled, his battle mask pulled aside so you could see his gorgeous smile.

"You're such a big help to me," Optimus said as he smiled down at you and scratched your head carefully, "I don't know what I would do without you."

You purred happily as you smiled, pleased with yourself as you heard Optimus praise you for work well done.

But it wasn't quite enough. Soon you raised your arms and made grabby motions with your hands and Optimus took the hint.

He picked you up carefully and brought you up and you immediately latched into his face and showered him in nuzzles and soft kisses that tickled Optimus.

"My Prime is the best!" You said cheerfully as you rubbed your cheek against his before kissing the same spot, "So handsome and kind for little old me!"

"I'm the old one here," Optimus said, but you didn't care. You kept kissing him and showing him your undying love and loyalty and he would do the same to you and show you how much you meant for him.
