The thing that's so cool about Shadow is that his original motives actually make sense, regardless of Gerald brainwashing him. He went through so much pain on the Ark so that they could find the formula for immortality. So they could cure Maria, his SISTER. And then she was killed. It was all for nothing.
Shadow had every reason to hate humanity. They took everything from him and it was about time he returned the favor.
It was only because of the fact that Maria means so much to him that he changed his mind in the end. Shadow made a promise to Maria and he NEVER breaks his promises. Ever. If it weren't for his pure integrity, Shadow would've destroyed Earth without a second thought.
And he would’ve gone down with the ship. We saw what Shadow was doing when the Ark started falling. He was just standing there, looking out the window. He wasn't trying to save himself in any way. He was just done. So tired of fighting and ready for it to be over.
It was only Amy reminding him of his promise to Maria that gave him the motivation to keep going. To do everything he could to reverse all the damage he'd done.
He had no reason to care. But Maria means that much to him.

ok but can we talk about Sonic's characterization in Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog for a minute?
Spoilers ahead
Sonic only appears in about a third of the Murder of Sonic game, but his characterization in there is one of my FAVORITE characterizations that I've seen in him in years. Yes, even slightly beating Frontiers (and I adore Frontiers, just for the record). Sonic here embodies all the things I love most in him. It's amazing. Here's a list of why he's great
He is unassuming.
From the very beginning of this game, Sonic is so humble. Like, actually humble.
When the conductor speaks with him and thanks him genuinely for fighting against Eggman, Sonic doesn't make a snarky face and be like "all in a day's work!" or something humble-braggy like that (which frankly is something I feel he would do in the comics). Instead, Sonic is surprised and genuinely expresses how it's no big deal and that he's just glad the conductor and his family are safe.
Tumblr media
Sonic is just a guy who loves adventure. He's not trying to get attention or impress anybody—he's just happy people are safe and well. I love how that is shown here. He doesn't need to tell people how selfless and kind and good he is, he just is. Sonic doesn't need or want to tell people what he stands for. He doesn't care what others think. He doesn't think about his identity constantly; he just is. (In my opinion, people who feel the need to constantly tell you what their character is like rarely actually have the traits they describe. If they actually are those things, it will come out naturally in their speech and actions.) In this game, Sonic simply is. What is this, late 2000s Sonic?? It's amazing.
2. He is encouraging in a private way.
Tumblr media
One of the biggest reasons Sonic felt off to me in Forces (even though I have a soft spot for that game) is because there, he constantly spouts off in a very public way stuff about friendship and not letting fear own you and how 'we can do anything if we stick together', etc. Sonic does believe all of those things, and he is definitely optimistic, but it's largely internal. It's instinctive. Sonic loves to encourage people around him, but he does it on an individual, one-on-one basis. He does this with Shahra in Secret Rings, with Merlina in Black Knight, regularly with Tails, and here with the main character when they get concerned about how they weren't assertive enough when they first felt Sonic was in danger.
Sonic doesn't just brush off the main character's concern either. He addresses and recognizes it for what it is, empathizing with them and helping them feel understood. Only after that does he recommend a way forward in his wonderful Sonic way, which encourages the main character and helps them find strength. It's so natural and it's awesome!
3. Sonic is selfless, also in an unassuming way.
When Sonic starts coming to, after briefly confirming Espio hit him with the dart (since Tails asked), Sonic instantly focuses on the safety of his friends.
Tumblr media
He hasn't fully recovered yet at all and he IMMEDIATELY focuses on protecting his friends and it's AWESOME. He can't even fully speak at this point and just ajsahdfjadsjlajf. This aspect of Sonic is much more consistently done in the games and was beautifully done in Frontiers, so it's not nearly as big a deal here but I am still so happy about the consistency.
4. Sonic is SO AMAZING AND SWEET WITH HIS DEAR FRIEND AMY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Need I say more? :)
This game was released as a joke, and yet it was incredible??? EVERYONE was so well characterized in this! I'm gonna be thinking about this game for a very long time.
If any of the creators see this, thank you so so SO much for making this game awesome! :D

Something that confuses me a lot is some people's reactions/analysis to Sonic saving Shadow in the void in Sonic Prime.
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE it, and its parallels to what happened in SA2. That is incredible. But what confuses me is that a lot of people assume that in this show, SA2 happened and Sonic is losing Shadow again.
But I don't think that's the case...? I know it was said that the show follows modern games/everything is canon, but I dont think that means what some people think it means. I've seen some people criticize this interpretation of Sonic BECAUSE they think all of the games happened in this universe.
What I understood is that this is simply using the current ongoing personalities/traits/styles of the modern Sonic characters in games, but this is NOT the same universe. Its a different one. The direction they are going with the characters in Sonic Prime is writing them closer to their mainline game counterparts, just in a different universal setting. The universe is just not as drastic of a difference as say, Movie!Sonic or Sonic Boom's universe. (Which i think is why they made a point to say its following mainline Sonic; because Boom is a universe with its own games, Sonic, and canon as well.)
This is also why I think so many people judge Sonic Prime on what Sonic should know, how he should act, and what he should have learned from. But this is a different universe Sonic! He's a lot more naive and learning to get around. Its why I interpeted that Sonic catching Shadow was not ptsd of losing him again, it was fear of losing him period. This is very likely this Sonic's first world-saving scenario; he's use to just stopping Eggman's latest 'Robot of the week'. He is out of his depth with the shatterverse situation.
Tumblr media
Now, I think its totally fair if this kind of 'new & naive' direction with Sonic's character turns people off, or if they dislike/hate it. This is not me trying to pursuade people into liking it if they don't. This is not me saying 'hey if you dislike this, its prolly because you're interpreting it wrong and if you see it this way you will like it.' But I constantly see people criticize the show for not taking into account things that happened in games. Or in this case, praising it for taking account events in the games. Those things didnt happen here! This is a different Sonic!
Tumblr media
Of course, I could absolutely be wrong, and if I am, that's fine. But honestly it feels like they're making a different Sonic altogether, and frankly it wouldnt make sense for this to be the exact same Sonic.
So I guess my overall point is that I kind of feel like Prime is being saddled with game expectations it literally cannot meet, via being a different universe. Like I said, hate it, love it, idc I'm not your mom. I just think that this needs to be said and added to the conversation.
('Everything is canon' means 'every interpretation is valid'. Sonic has different universes, so its a lot more validating to fans to say everything happened, instead of alienating entire swathes of fans who all experienced Sonic differently through different media, by saying their experience isn't 'real' or 'true' anymore. And I think the more people realize this, the less people will argue 'evidence XYZ in game and this comic and the Japanese version of this podcast, and this game dev, and this episode, and this writer contradict your theory of Sonic hugging people' you do not need canon as gospel to validate why you like or dislike a certain take.)
Tumblr media
Sonic in general is so fun because of how freeform and multiverse and endless it is. We haven't had that in a long time. There are things I love and things I hate, but not because of how closely they follow mainline. Its because I just like or hate it. We should cultivate this new growth and diversity, not prune it to fit into one shape. 🌱

I love the "ARK siblings" concept and I love cute lighthearted fanart of them being siblings but I feel like a lot of people forget that they literally canonically share a soul and that her death is, in my opinion, I think supposed to represent a part of one's self dying and that they're supposed to be, symbolically, a lot more than siblings.
I always saw Shadow's story as a symbolic way to express the way your inner child and innocence is sacrificed in order to survive complex childhood trauma. Maria's color scheme and the way she's written is, I think, clear to all of us how she's meant to represent innocence and youth. I mean, she doesn't really function very well as a stand-alone character or realistic depiction of a child, shes always been more of an.. idea.
I'm not sure if it was purposeful, but the moon's "Maria" are craters that formed from the moon repeatedly taking the hits of asteroids at it's points of gravity. These points of gravity attract asteroids and draws then away from the Earth. The craters are mostly on the side of the moon we see, so the dark side of the moon, or "shadowed" side is better protected because of that. I feel like this is an extension of Shadow and Maria's symbolism. She took the bullet for him, protecting him, the same way Maria takes the comets, and the same way your brain will sacrifice your inner child (or freeze/rush your mental development) in order to survive intense childhood abuse. I know it all sounds extreme lmao but at the end of the day characters and storytelling are used to explore and express hard emotions and I don't think this randomly tragic character sprung out of nowhere for the Sonic games, which, before that point, always had very lighthearted positive characters (except for the echidna extinction in the game right before Shadow's). Having a character that was easy to approach, yet could represent scarier concepts as a child-friendly stand-in, felt like a very important tool to me growing up. I just hope that that writing can be appreciated in his character, with an understanding of how messy production can be and how a character can get pulled between many different people and ideas. I do think this symbolism was intentional to some degree, especially when it gets to the blatant soul-sharing and how characters insist that Shadow can't be a weapon because Maria's soul (his inner child and true morals despite the damage done to him) makes him "good hearted."
There's other things that uphold this symbolism of Maria dying as representing his inner child being killed, like the rushed/suspended mental development in the face of trauma being illustrated by the fact that Shadow was forced into a dormant cyro slumber right after Maria's death, symbolizing the way he had to basically skip childhood or hit pause on development until he could escape the people controlling him. Much like how victims will have to pause everything and go on autopilot with only a goal of survival until they can escape their situation; only after they feel safe can they begin growing as a person and find their identity. In the Japanese language, there are different types of pronouns people can refer to themselves with instead of just "I" or "myself." In the Japanese dub of SA2, Shadow's creator said in an interview that he had been very insistent on Shadow using the pronouns reserved for young boys, despite Shadow's menacing villain role in the game, because he felt it was important to show Shadow's purity and his lack of experience in life so far. That "live and learn" theme.
And then in his self titled game, Shadow is searching for a way to reconnect with his past and to find the truth about this Maria person he keeps seeing in flashbacks, but in the end he throws away her picture and accepts himself as he is now, forever changed and stained by his past, but more than just a product of his situation. He is "all of him," including the negative impact he never asked for, and including the parts of himself he lost, but also the parts of himself he chose to become. Your environment and childhood shapes you even if you didn't want it to, but that doesnt mean you cant have control in your identity and recover your inherent nature once you've escaped the negative influence (nature vs nurture theme). He will never be the person he used to be, or could have been, (represented by Maria as a pure and untouched youth), but he still has a say in what that grows into.
I just feel like a lot of Shadow's identity issues and inner conflict stem from this whole soul sharing situation with Maria and that his character ends up inevitably being misunderstood if you water them down to just siblings. Especially considering that it was never answered if Shadow actually even ever met Maria or if they're just memories planted by Gerald or caused by the shared soul. In Sonic Battle, it's also said in Gerald's diary that not only do Maria and Shadow share identical souls, but that Gerald literally modeled Shadow after Maria out of his love for her. I'm not sure to what degree or in what ways, but Shadow is supposed to share purposeful similarities with Maria, likely through the content of her character and her morals. That's what makes them so much deeper than just psuedo siblings, he's not only made for her, but designed after her too. It can't really be compared to, for example, Sonic and Tails.
I also think its what makes Shadow's character so substantial and meaningful. His self titled game's entire theme was purity, morals, what is good and bad. This question of purity and morality spreads into his appearances in other stories too- This question that, if you were badly hurt in your youth and shaped by evil- does that leave you impure? Stained? Destined to continue that cycle of harm and cruelty? I think these insecurities feel very real and relatable, and that it's even more realistic that despite these insecurities, that hurt and damage is actually what fuels him to protect others. Just as he said in Sonic Battle, "There's no need to repeat past tragedies! Nobody else ever needs to go through the things that I have!"
Statistically (despite media portrayal) abuse victims RARELY become abusers, because they understand the pain on a deeper level and can't bring themselves to force someone else into experiencing that same pain, knowing the permanent damage it causes. However, childhood abuse leaves people socially stunted and conditioned to harshness, which causes them to accidentally hurt others without meaning to. Or they end up hurting people out of desperation if they feel endangered (like Shadow's "means to an end" approach where he'll prioritize violence if it means reducing the end-impact). Also, they are more susceptible to being abused again after escaping the first abuser, because they are so susceptible to manipulation- Just like how whenever Shadow does switch sides, its usually because someone manipulated him into it or literally brainwashed him. I think Shadow conveys all of this so well, and that Maria's true role is an integral part of it all that can't be ignored or misunderstood, or else Shadow ends up reading as unnecessarily violent or overly obsessed with her when you interpret her as just a sister-figure that he knew for... who knows how few years.
I think this symbolism runs deep with his writing. Just like Maria's meant to be that inherent purity and inner child, I think the black arms DNA is that stain that abuse or trauma can leave on you, that causes you to act out or feel like you're always holding back and trying to keep control over some darker part of yourself that was left behind in the damage done. Especially since they literally have a mind link with Shadow. In the Sonic Universe comic, they succeed in brainwashing Shadow and turn him against his friends. These mind-links, soul-sharing, and brain-washing from both Gerald and the black arms... To disregard the fact that he's deeply connected to these people on a metaphysical, identity altering level is to water down his character and leave it feeling as though his motives are too weak to justify his harsh actions. I've seen people poke fun at his amnesia or insecurity in his identity, as though his confusion isn't justified, and I think it's because people don't realize he has these... literal fragments of other people inside of him, that that's pretty much what he's made of, kind of franken-steined together between a little girl's hopes and morals, an alien race's hivemind greed, a weapon-hungry government and a revenge maddened scientist's painful grief, and even the chaos emeralds which we all know are spiritually whacky and potentially connected to another alien race's memories and energies (the ancients from sonic frontiers). With all of that going on, plus some amnesia mixed in and his memories having been altered by Gerald- I mean.. you'd be searching for the "truth" of your identity too, who you really are. And of course, prone to frustration and aggression, or even a "wish-washy inconsistency." I think there's always a constant tug of war inside of him and that his whole development was a game of tug of war between Gerald, G.U.N and the black arms too. "Am I a cure, am I a death-bringer, am I earth's protector, am I it's destroyer," etc etc
Idk I just think a lot of problems people have with Shadow's writing stems from not realizing how deep things go and what they symbolize. Not to say that something like his boom characterization is of good quality or anything, but I think it's unfair to call him inconsistent when a confusion in his own identity and purpose/goals is kind of the point. And I think people not realizing Maria's deeper, physiological connection to him and influence might be part of the problem.

thinking about nine and how his dynamic with sonic affects his character and. The whole reason nine turned out the way he did is because sonic never showed up to chase off his bullies. He grew up alone and independant and shut out everyone. Tails, on the other hand, grew up clinging to sonic and hiding behind him and we saw in frontiers that part of his whole character development was letting sonic go a little and becoming his own person. Nine is the opposite of that, completely. He’s already his own person, perhaps too much. He grew up alone and tried to push sonic away and ironically ended up needing him to complete his plan, but what really ended the fight in prime was him letting sonic in and accepting his help and the hug solidified that. I just think its so cool how nine and tails growth as a character revolves around sonic holding him back in two very different ways, tails letting him go, and nine letting him in

I've been playing Sonic Frontiers, and I love how much Sonic heeds Amy's word and instruction, despite his impatience to just get things over with.
Sonic is anxious to get his friends back, but when amy tells him what he should do before that, he does it. "Well, you've always had a knack for weird incites. Who am i to argue." "I would think we've got more pressing issues.. but, again, who am i to argue." He helps the koco find her first love, he "wrangles children" as he put it, and he doesn't deny others help. He's anxious, but he does it.
Sonic is never the type to deny others help, but he is more likely to rush the job when his friends are on the line. Even still, Amy's words keep him grounded and on task with more patience, and despite his feelings on the matter, since she takes this seriously, so will he, even if he doesn't quite understand. "You... got all that, did you?" Anf he accepts it.
I also love that when Amy misunderstands him, he is quick to defend himself to her, something he didn't use to do. "Are you telling me that you would leave behind someone in need?" "No! But I'm also worried about you." He's not the kind of guy to stop and justify his actions or thoughts to anyone, but he does for Amy. Her opinion, her stance on what he does, and her words, it all matters. At times, it can even dictate what he does and how he conducts himself. Amy's input matters to Sonic a lot, and it's wonderful to actually see it, not just in their silent actions but now in their words.
Sonic always heeds his friends' advice, but now we're seeing him treat Amy the same way, if not better, Sega has come a long way with these two, and it's beautiful 💕

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon! In celebration, I've made a video analyzing its titular character, for I believe he's one of the most underrated versions of the character, often overshadowed by not only other versions of Sonic but his fellow Freedom Fighters. With all the criticisms he's received, I wanted to give my own perspective as someone whose entire vision of the character was shaped by this show due to a lack of ability to really play the 3D games until much later. So in this video I'll go over his attitude, his intelligence, his kindness and compassion, his trauma and vulnerability, and his relationship with Sally. It'd mean the world to me if you can share this around, as my non-UT/DR content tends to struggle in the algorithm.

⚠️SONIC PRIME SEASON 3 SPOILERS⚠️
While watching season 3 I noticed a lot of cool details
As an example, in a scene where Sonic fights with Grim Sonics, it looks like he's trying to mock and tease them, like he always does with his foes, but look what happens when he does that:
Bots immediately cut off his every move. They're not letting him make a move.
Tumblr media
He's trying to do what he's the best at: mock his opponent, make them mad, make it seem like he's the one who's controlling the situation and who's looking cool. Because it is his personality, he's never serious, even in dangerous situations. Most likely even his coping mechanism.
But these bots are not playing around, they can't be mad, can't lose control, they only have one mission – defeat Sonic and take him to Nine.
And they're much faster than Sonic's usual opponents. Not only that, there're a lot of them and he can't keep up with their attacks and be sassy about it. He's outnumbered
Tumblr media
He tried to make some teasing gestures and he succeeded once, but these robots are clearly too fast for him, he can't even properly dodge without a punch
Tumblr media
And then he just drops all his goofy personality, growls and addresses to Nine, looking really mad:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know that it's getting serious when the most silly and sassy character is mad.
I hope you liked my analysis, I'll do more as soon as I can because hooo boy there's a LOT in Sonic Prime s3 to unpack! My new hyperfixation, here I come!!

One thing I love is how complicated Shadow’s relationship with Gerald was. This man brought Shadow into the world. He gave him life. They spent quite a lot of time together. Gerald trusted Shadow enough to leave him with the responsibility to save the Earth from the Black Arms. He put everything he had into Shadow.
But then you take a step back. Gerald also had to experiment on Shadow a lot. A lot of Shadow’s Ark trauma probably stems from Gerald, not just Maria’s death. When Gerald lost his mind, all sympathy for Shadow went out the window. Gerald manipulated Shadow’s memories to serve his own purposes of revenge. Shadow became just a tool to him. This had a massive impact on Shadow.
I see Shadow as constantly warring with himself over what he thinks of Gerald. Does he hate him? Does he forgive him? Shadow doesn't even know, and I love that. There's no clean cut answer.

When i look at the interpretation of boom sonic i see a depressed teen.
----------------------------------------------------
° He always has his friends but it's not like they always got his back.
° He is the local hero and he feels like the hero but the town doesn't respect him one bit, i think they don't like his attitude or him in general. But because he is sonic he feels like he has to save the town anyway. Because that is just how a sonic is in heart.
° In my own au i gave him some backstory abt what is hidden under his tape (check on ao3 if you are interested: Sportstape and painful Memories) but i think in the canon it's kinda sad. Maybe he needs the tape for support or somth like that.
° Once in a episode he made noise when he ran to fast so that could mean he is always holding back his speed for the sake of everyone's hearing.
° When i look at the relation with eggman that he has i feel like he was his dad in the past. But something throve them apart to be rivals, although that old fatherly bond sometimes comes back up again. And if you look really deep i'm thinking that if he has shit his friends would say to him to not be dramatic but eggman would actually help him.
----------------------------------------------------
Thanks for reading my boom sonic character analysis (sort of) ❤️
If yall got any more ideas abt him i'm happy to read them 🥺

First off, I adore your Sonic analyses--they're incredibly insightful. Secondly... so, Sonic letting Eggman live is like Batman letting the Joker live? Or superheroes letting villains live, in general. What do you think?
Hey, thank you so much!!
I think Sonic letting Eggman live is more so the consequence of Sonic not wanting to play God or some arbiter of justice.
You have to remember that in Sonic’s mind, he didn’t spare Eggman, he spared Mr. Tinker (a huge part of the good that Sonic sees in him). Sonic didn’t want to punish, in essence, an innocent person for the crimes of a terrorist. In that sense, he’s pretty justified.
That said, that’s not to say Sonic has never punished or killed anyone before. Erazor Djinn comes to mind, as the one example everyone cites when they cry about how IDW Sonic is “too soft.” Erazor Djinn was bad and deserved his end, but Eggman is worse. There’s no denying that, but it’s more complicated than that.
Sonic and Eggman have a complicated history and relationship. They hate each other, but they also respect each other, and they have worked together so many times that they’ve come to truly understand each other. It’s not that Sonic can’t bare to lose him (far from that), but that Sonic doesn’t want to give up hope that Eggman can be good. Eggman could do such good for people if he had different morals, and Sonic wants to see that through because he wants to see that in everyone.
Sonic X has probably my favourite depiction of Eggman because we get to see the most nuance from him (what Sonic sees despite what everyone around him says). Eggman has a compassionate side to him that takes a vested interest in those around him, even his enemies. Eggman takes a stand for the common good when thinks things are going too far. Eggman intervenes not only when it serves him, but when he sees that standing by will lead to what he believes to be untimely harm. Saving Shadow, helping Chris get home, confronting Sonic (for his own good) when he was denying that everyone would have to go home, and fighting the Metarex all come to mind.
Sonic doesn’t believe in denying someone the chance to be good, even if that means putting a stop to all the bad they do in the process. And that’s the important thing: as long as Sonic stands, Sonic will stop him—again, and again, and again.

I made an analysis on how eggman seems to design his robots to percieve him as a fatherly figure in order to take advantage of the loyalty and devotion that would breed, and how I think he does it because even if Tails were to reprogram or rewire them to have free will, their inherent desire would be to serve their leader/to make their father proud. (You can read that post here)
Interestingly enough, The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog came out a few days later, and in my opinion, proved this theory of mine!
Tumblr media
Here we see them in shirts which you can assume were either made by eggman himself, or made by one his robots. On the shirt he is literally referred to as their dad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here he outright says that conditioning them to have a motivation is more powerful/reliable than just programming alone. (It was pretty awesome to see a theory of mine I had just posted get proven so soon after with such similar wording, I was really excited lolol).
Minor badniks like motobugs are simply programmed to target Sonic, and we've seen in the IDW comics that they'll all revert to a neutral and docile state without anyone controlling them or upkeeping them. For all robots above that level (like Sage, and Metal), they're all conditioned to see him as a father figure and rewarded for seeking his praise and serving him. He even says that the rewards they ask for are just related to him, showing how highly they view him.
This way, no matter how many chances someone like Metal is given, he will always return to Eggman, no matter what. Of course, it does lead to some rebelling, like Orbot and Cubot ditching Eggman anytime he's defeated or things get too scary (although, they're simple assistants, so he probably didn't focus too much on their loyalty). Or like Omega turning on Eggman when he was left alone too long.
Still, you've got to admit, the success with Sage, Metal, or even the Heavy King, are easily worth the risk of losing a few.
And as always, I'd like to point out, that he does seem to actually have a desire to be both a father and a leader. He seems to have real ideas about how to better the world, like accessible public transport that values citizens instead of exclusively using the railroad system for money-producing-cargo. So I think when he conditions his robots to see him as a respectable leader, it's a real desire of his, and he actually wants to be a good one, he's just too obsessed with control and ends up aggressively taking things over and removing citizens' freedoms because he thinks he knows what's good for them better than they do. He only makes himself a father to a select few of them, and in the IDW comics when he was Mr. Tinker, it seems he had a real desire and skill in being a father to Belle the Tinkerer. He also seems to have set up a relationship with Orbot and Cubot, and seems to play card games or watch shows with them, even buys them toys just for them (Cubot had a popstar figurine in the IDW comics that supposedly belonged just to him, and when it broke they made a point of bringing it to eggman). He also mentions making the Sonic Crew into toys for Sage, and although it's just a taunt, it implies the possibility that he really does build toys for her, which again, I think building toys and amusement park rides are a real passion of his, and you can read more about it in my other post.
