really love how exrid 57 ended with soundwave, cosmos, sky byte, and needlenose all doing dishes on sanctuary station while the cassettes look on and laugh at them. It’s a deliberate parallel to MTMTE 57 but it works thematically with characters who never fit in making changes and finding a new place to call home and new people to call friends :)

Do you think Baxter would have a type? I mean, he'd totally be into a fellow nerd (as seen in that one scene in the 2016 film), but what else would he be into?

Sorry this took long to get to anon, life's been a little hectic.

In terms of a romantic interest, It would honestly depend on the version of him.

As you mentioned, Bayverse would definitely like a fellow nerd or woman of science. Under it all, He's a goofy guy that's passionate about science & other nerdy wonders & he doesn't have anyone to share that interest/bond with.

His 87 counterpart I can see being the same way but to an extent though.

From my friend's Exit The Fly continuity (which I genuinely consider canon at this point), 87 Baxter also gives me the vibe he'd be interested in another scientist, granted it would take time for him though. I kinda see him as Demisexual, someone who really only falls for someone through a bond, especially a bond that really hits close to him like other similarities & understandings, not just with science alone.

2012 is a slightly different story. 2012 Baxter doesn't fall into the same category as the previous two in my eyes, if anything I think just showing him basic kindness is enough for him to be drawn to you. I also don't think he falls into being Demi either or only prefers other smart people (tho it would be a plus for him) he'd find ways to build bonds with you, it's even delved upon a little in the Insecta Trifecta

2012 Baxter has gone so long being by himself & without kindness that he'll cling onto anybody that gives him a positive response. Doubt it's canon but even the Xbox game showed this too

Again being a nerd/scientist would be a plus side but in terms of types, 2012 would be into anyone nice, able to handle their own, (especially able to protect him as well), having a sense of humor & being loyal.

IDW is an interesting case tho. Throughout the 13 years we've known him he doesn't give me the intention of being into anybody period. In fact, The Armageddon game opening moves #2 pretty much proved my theory even further that IDW Stockman just isn't an intimate guy.

Even if you're another scientist like him, the most he'd feel about you is either respect, tolerating you or nothing at all. IDW could possibly be Aromantic as the man just doesn't have any sign or example of him being more than content with anybody for that matter. So I'd say his type would just be nobody.

Similar can be said about 2003 too actually, the most friendly you would get from him is also content, maybe not as far as IDW, but he's not in a rush to be with anybody as his own needs are already more important, & can't think about anyone else at the moment. Even if he were to seek out someone, he'd definitely want someone with brains. we've already seen how he reacts or feels about anyone with an IQ lower than his, BUT it's not black & white either. We've also seen how he feels about OTHER scientists, & it's not exactly positive. He'd like to be with someone that's smart BUT as long as they aren't smarter than him. He's still a narcissist after all, so he still wants to be the lead brain in the relationship.

Last example I want to bring up is Mutant Mayhem who would definitely want a companion regardless of their intellect. MMBaxter just wanted a family & anybody to like him, so like with 2012 he just wants basic human kindness & someone that can look past physical flaws (his appearance & ofc mutant children) so he's not exactly picky as long as they match that vibe, but again brains would be a bonus.

For those of you who don't have the time/money/patience/bandwidth to read the new IDW comics...

I know I've shared @thankskenpenders information about Archie, but I haven't seen a lot of people talk about good sources for IDW. So, if anyone here is really is interested in the new comic continuity but, for whatever reason, cannot read/will not get the comics, I take the liberty of recommending @GameApologist. He does analisies on Sonic stuff and other games/comics. The link above will take you to the playlist for all of the IDW Speed Read videos.

Now, the summaries are peppered with his own opinions. I say this because sometimes people get weird about other's opinions. Don't do that. The dude's a chill guy who I haven't heard one cross word about and I personally appreciate that he bothers to do these Speed Reads because I'm a broke bastard who can't afford the comics at this moment.

Also, for clarification, game canon is seperate from comic canon. They overlap obviously because one is a licensed representation of the other, but if you pick up on differences between character depictions/plot/whatever between the games and these stories, that's just the nature of the beast, beasties. I don't know what else to tell you.

Anyway, hope y'all are doing okay, and if you're not, I hope stuff gets better for you soon. The world is positively fucked out there, so every day, in every way, be the best you you can muster. Do your best to be kind. Be willing to learn and try new things. Remember to take care of yourself (I know this last one is possibly the hardest). Thinking about IDW Optimus again and the fandom's aversion to even acknowledging he exists bc he's a cop or whatever and like. Most of the time people literally just replace him in fic with some white bread knockoff archivist/librarian, not even bothering to keep in IDW OP's personality (which just bolsters my theory that the problem isn't him being a cop the problem is that he's too multifaceted but I digress).

And it's annoying because you could totally write IDW Optimus as not a cop while still keeping his canon personality. You just have to realize that the reason IDW OP became a cop in the first place is because his formative experiences when he was young shaped him to basically have two priorities: 1. To help people and 2. To do it by being on the ground actively doing something about the bad things happening to people.

IDW OP would not be a fucking librarian or archivist because even though those are noble pursuits that can help people and change the world, and Optimus is educated/smart enough for the profession, he wouldn't be satisfied just teaching people or spreading information about activism or social-historical studies or whatever. He's a mech of action: he needs to be doing things right now, in front of him, to people he sees/interacts with in his own eyes, improving society with concrete actions rather than indirect action or abstract inspiration.

So basically the alternate job ideas I can think of for IDW Optimus are something like being a firefighter (or any first responder really) or even whatever the equivalent would be to international charity organizations, those ones that send volunteers across the world to do stuff like build housing/infrastructure or distribute food or whatnot. I mean I can't imagine that the equivalents to these things would be exactly the same in IDW Cybertron, so you'd have to get a little creative with it, but these are just some ideas of jobs that would fit IDW Optimus' personality while still filling the niche of "not a cop" for people who are just that opposed to it.

Though I think the revulsion against coptimus is annoying in general tbh because IDW is already a continuity that rejects the idea of easily defined good/evil people or groups. It feels like people really want Optimus to be a good person in a very sanitized and academically approved way, so he has to be nice and squeaky clean but also like, a perfect leftist who knows theory and holds the most progressive opinions on every single issue....

There is no room for the idea that good people join bad institutions, there's no room for the idea that the reason people think cops are good guys who help people is bc of the government propaganda everything is saturated with. Hell there's even later issues of the Optimus Prime series by John Barber where Optimus like, MULTIPLE FUCKING TIMES, is shown in flashbacks grappling with the fact that he as a cop/Zeta's regime that he works for might not actually be improving society like they say they are, and dealing with the fact that he feels more like a lesser evil compared to the Decepticons (perhaps not "lesser" at all).

It's like there's this idea in fandom of like, fictional media and opinions on media having to strictly adhere to progressive ideals at all times. So people just go "cops bad, this character is a cop, therefore they suck" without being willing to engage with the idea of like. IDW OP is born wanting to fight injustice and protect people -> a good way to protect people is to fight the people who are hurting them and committing crimes -> surely following the law is a reliable moral code to guide him in this -> becomes a cop because he's been indoctrinated into a society (much like our own) where he was told that the state/the law exist to protect the people and being a cop means you get to fight bad guys that hurt people. There's really so many interesting concepts there that could be (and CANONICALLY IS) explored about how good, well-intentioned people can be led to harmful actions simply because they have been fed the idea that the things they're doing are good/helpful/noble. Which is especially important for a character like Optimus, I think, who has a cultural icon status as The Irrefutable and Perfect Good, so it's really important actually to use IDW Optimus as an example of how even the most noble people you know have held problematic beliefs or done bad things at some point in their life. You know, because no one is born perfect and ideologically pure, and in fact society is constructed in exactly a manner to make people drink the kool-aid and believe that the systems designed to hurt them/others are just a normal, if flawed, society.

I mean the writing in IDW literally has Optimus deal directly and indirectly with the harm he's done as a cop and how people don't/didn't trust him because of that. I don't know what the fuck else this fandom wants if the source material literally saying "OP realizes that cops suck and he hurt people and earned their disdain by doing the things he did" doesn't stop them from going EW cop bastard sucks and is the worst Optimus. Like the narrative barely stops short of outright saying ACAB and Optimus himself would agree with this sentiment.

At that point, the collective fandom beef with IDW OP isn't because he's a cop and the narrative didn't do enough to condemn that. The problem is literally just that people don't read and don't care

TLDR: Consider the fact that good people can do bad things sometimes especially when living from birth in a corrupt society that thoroughly disguises its vices/oppressive structures as completely normal parts of existence

This is Shadow’s only canonical hug in the games, and aside from jumping slightly from being snuck up on, he seems to like it just fine.

Just look at that smile! He’s happy. He finds it endearing.

It was a hug from a complete stranger meant for someone else, but he still drank it in--and, given that he’d effectively just lost Maria, he really did need it. It’s the combination of Amy’s gentleness AND her speech that changed his mind. After all, if someone as sweet as her sees something in the humans, maybe they’re not so bad.

Shadow doesn’t hate hugs inherently; it’s just that no one hugs him in the first place...

...aside from one person.

Amy’s easily the most affectionate character in the cast. It’s cute at first glance, but there’s a common thread to every instance that puts a damper on it.

She’s always, ALWAYS the initiator.

She puts more into each hug than anyone else does.

She’s always the last to pull away.

The most reciprocated Amy hug I know of in canon is this one:

Which is absolutely adorable...but Amy still initiated. Because it’s always her job. Even the characters who like affection don’t need it the way she does...with one exception.

And this tiny detail just killed me. The little, “wait, come back 😟”

It’s the only time I know of when someone has actually stepped after her like this. In a game where everyone left Amy behind, he wanted to follow her. Mister so-called-prickly didn’t want the hug to end.

Because he’s the only one who needs it as much as she does.

He wants to be held as much as she wants to hold someone else, and no one else is warm and sincere enough for it. Compare these instances:

Sonic thinks Shadow is wrong about something, so he grabs Shadow’s arm to stop him, and Shadow aggressively wrenches it away and leaves.

But when Amy thinks Shadow is wrong about something and grabs his arm to stop him, he gently removes her hand and thinks about what she has to say.

Even when he doesn’t want to be touched, he makes the distinction between “don’t touch me” and “not right now, please.” These are from two different continuities, of course, but I think the point stands. Amy’s special. He’s gentler with her than he is with other people, and that’s consistent across all canons.

Side note: how often does Amy get to feel special like that? I actually really like that Sonic doesn’t place others in a hierarchy of importance, and I wouldn’t change that about him even if I could...

...but Amy does play favorites. I want her to feel like she’s someone else’s favorite, too. I want her to have someone who puts her first and likes her best. I think Shadow’s more than capable of that. I believe he craves clinginess like hers deep down, even if he hasn’t consciously figured that out yet.

I have an entire tag for these two being affectionate. My favorite is probably this one.

Of course, there may be those who say I’m reading too much into one (1) hug. And you know what? Maybe they’re right! We need a bigger sample size. Sega, make more characters hug Shadow, please. Let Rouge comfort him after he confides in her about something. Have Omega give him an awkward metal embrace because he read on the internet that organic beings like that kind of thing. Make Shadow himself pull Silver into a hug when he’s breaking down crying from the stress of always having to be a hero. Show Tails accidentally grab onto him out of fear when they’re trapped in a lightning storm, and when he gets embarrassed and pulls away, have Shadow hold him for the rest of the storm and admit he’s not fond of bright lights, either.

1. It’s more of a Krang feature. I do love when the turtles are drawn with tails, but I didn’t do it from the beginning, and so for consistency sake in the EW universe I’ve held off. Maybe one day I’ll just say “fuck it” and give into the urge to give them all cute little tails. But even if I did, Lita’s would be much longer than any of the family’s (except Raph’s hypothetical tail lol).

2. Lita being albino and pink in the IDW comics pretty much made that Krang connection for me lol. I didn’t have to reach too hard with her design. She leans into it.

3. I have her personality very close to Leo’s canon personality, so she’s more on the ADHD side. She does have some sensory issues with sound, which a lot of ppl with adhd have (👋🏻). But being raised around the quiet and solemn Time Masters Sanctum it’s like really noticeable. When she visits the family, it can be very overwhelming, but rather than shutting down, she gets insanely riled up and can’t contain herself. It works though—everyone is more than happy to let her ramble on.

4. She never met either of them but Splinter of course would’ve been Jiji and Draxum would’ve been just Grandfather. Nothing too out of this world lol. And yes, Donnie chooses to embrace Draxum’s name.

5. Sorry idk what exactly this is asking. Like yes? Lita May is based off IDW Lita, from the comics 😅 sorry if I’m missing the question.

6. She is a spiny soft shell like Donnie, but yes, her spines are significantly more pronounced, thanks to, you guessed it!

So i finished TFE and Megatron being an autobot was one of my favourite things. OP and Megs are a power couple when they get along, ship-wise or no. I do ship them, but I also respect and adore the bond they have. I freaking loved the Earthspark series bc of many reasons (one being the representation of nonbinary stuff), but one of the main reasons being the interesting twist of Megs being a good guy. I know, he's autobot in IDW comics and Megs isnt always the baddest guy, but this series was a banger. I hope we get more episodes!

Also, as someone who adores the Generation 1, (it was a part of my childhood too), I loved all the references to G1. Earthspark is like an AU of the G1, and I loved that too!

No atlmodes takes out the whole funtionist society, are at least Megatron's big chunk in it. Also, Bee being the same age as them is a very weird take. I've always seen Bee as being 20 and Megs and OP being in their 50s.

Changing the backstory?? My dude there IS no one backstory in transformers. Megatron hasn’t always been a miner/gladiator/revolutionary leader against functionism. This is a brand new continuity, not IDW or Aligned. For gods sake have we forgotten the LITERAL EVIL BRAINWORMS he had in G1???

I super love new and weird takes on old stuff, in case you’ve forgotten the premise of this blog. I have some qualms maybe but overall I’m excited for this. Also you seem really quick to dismiss the lore and worldbuilding potential of not everyone having tcogs. Limiting tcog use so that “lowly worker bots” don’t have any, and apparently many don’t even have NAMES, sounds like it could absolutely be a dystopic regime, just with a different manner of oppression than functionism.
