bayverse raph x reader / fluff + angst

notes: 1.8k words, first person pov, established relationship, gender neutral reader (no pronouns used,) details of injuries and tending to said injuries.

a knock on the window at 3am? that only means one thing: the turtles are here. smiling, I rub the remnants of sleep from my eyes and hop out of bed to open up the curtain. only one turtle faces me at the window though - raphael.

I open the window and help his wide frame step down from the ledge, but my previous smile fades fast when raph groans in pain as he steps onto the floor.

“raph, what’s wrong? where are the rest of the boys? what happened?” I speak as fast as possible to try and get to his answer, worry eating away at me with each second that passes.

my raph is the mass strength and rough hand amongst the turtles. he can handle a lot of damage since he always manages to deal out more than what is done onto him. seeing him bent over, actually using my arm for support and not simply holding me because he wants to, groaning in genuine pain rather than letting out his usual gruff noises of acknowledgment - that scares me. it terrifies me when I don’t know what has happened.

“I told them to check on dad,” he begins breathlessly, “I needed you. it’s really bad this time.”

my eyes widen and I hurry him to the side of my bed, the mattress creaking under his weight. I grasp his face in my hands to check him over, turning his head every which way, but see nothing apart from a few new scratches on his skin.

“what do you mean ‘really bad,’ raph? you’re scaring me.”

“my—“ he lifts his arm and tries to reach for the back of his shell, failing miserably and almost howling out in pain, “my shell, sweetheart. I haven’t seen it yet but I heard it crack and this pain is too much for it to just be taped up.”

I scuttle around his large form and am immediately hit with the sight of a deep crack in the middle of his shell. he was right to come straight to me with this one. he should always come to me with injuries but is too stubborn most of the time and rides out the pain: ‘it may look bad to you but it’s nothing on me.’

when the boys started to properly use their skills outside of the lair, with the risk of larger injuries increasing, I began to research and teach myself how to handle ones specific to these mutants. thanks to many in depth articles about turtle care, I have safely cleaned and covered up small cracks before. the only difference between the boys and ‘normal’ turtles in regards to care like this is their size - it takes longer and requires more focus to clean cracks, ensuring that they can heal appropriately over time. although tonight’s damage will take double that, and maybe more.

“oh raph, oh my…how? wait, don’t answer that. I’m doing my first aid stuff then we can talk about it, okay?” he nods with a sad smile and all I can do is reach out and cup his cheek, returning the expression he gave me. he moves my hand to his lips for a quick kiss before I start scurrying off to grab what I need.

let’s see - chlorohexidine solution, q-tips, cotton pads, adhesive patches and a towel. is that all I need? I have no idea right now; I’m so scared to touch him that I feel like stalling for as long as I can.

I walk slowly back to where he sits on the edge of my bed, his head resting in one hand as the other rubs at his tired eyes. I lay down all that I grabbed from the bathroom before taking a deep breath and sitting down behind him. the room is silent for a couple of minutes after that, my heart beating loudly in my ears. I can’t break my anxious stare away from the crack in his beautiful carapace.

“hey…” raph speaks ever so softly to get my attention.

“yeah— sorry. I’m sorry,” I feel tears begin to form in my eyes. I hate seeing him hurt like this. “I’m going to fix you up. I promise I’ll fix this. I’ll touch around your shell, away from the crack, and you tell me how it feels. let me know how much the pain has spread.”

he gestures ‘yes’ to me but with a frowned brow, “don’t cry, love. everything is okay. I’m raphael, remember? this is nothing on me!”

but I can see it - I can see the pain written on his face, the way his eyes look misty. I don’t want to push him to talk nor do I want to directly acknowledge the pain I can see; I don’t want to break his protective wall at a time like this. it wouldn’t be fair to do so. I wipe my tears and get straight to work instead.

my small hand reaches out for him, gently patting around the edges of his shell then smoothing over the surface, “that’s not bad at all. it just feels tingly, like the nice kind of tingly you give me.” I giggle at him. it’s a relief that the shell hasn’t shattered or anything and he can feel my hand like always.

I’ve spent so many nights tracing over the faint patterns of his plastron and committing the texture to memory. it helps calm him after a stressful training day or when he can’t sleep. it secretly calms me too because it’s just us in those moments, the rest of the world fading away and leaving only raph and I. there’s no need to jump away from my hold to save new york when my touch melts away the city completely. nothing can break us out of that warm paradise as long as we are together.

despite the touch test going well, the cleaning of his wounds will definitely be painful since the crack is open and noticeable. I pour some of the solution onto a q-tip and tell raph to start breathing slowly and deeply. I help him set a pace for it before I begin to clean.

he hisses in pain when the piece of cotton comes in contact with the wound and my tears start to flow again, “I know baby, but this part is important,” I sniffle and reach my free hand for his, “use me to balance yourself.”

“I’ll break your little hand,” there is a fracture in his voice as he speaks but he still manages to let out a chuckle with his words.

“breathe and squeeze, raph, don’t worry about me.”

and so he did - each time I dipped the cotton into the crack he inhaled and exhaled quickly whilst grasping my hand in his. I rubbed my thumb over his rough skin in an attempt to ground us both over and over again.

“one last clean and then I’ll patch it up and be done for tonight.” he lets out a loud sigh at that, obviously glad that the stinging will be over soon. I hear him lowly whimper but force a cough after in an attempt to hide the noise. once again I don’t press him on it, I just kiss the back of his hand to let him know it’s alright.

the last step is to cut adhesive patches to fit the crack, making sure to leave small gaps at the ends to allow air to flow through. this process isn’t all that different from putting a bandaid on a human arm, and thank goodness for that. I want to do everything I can to help raph, to ease his pain, so this being a somewhat ‘easy’ task to complete means luck is on my side right now.

with the last piece secure I get up from the bed to face him again, giving him a small smile to let him know it’s done. I slip myself between his legs and reach out to untie his bandana. his eyes close as he presses his head onto my chest to give me access to the tie at the back.

sliding the cloth from his face, I set it on the bed and wipe underneath his eyes; he looks so worn out. my fingers move down to draw along the scars from previous battles and to check over any new cuts, the pad of my thumb eventually landing on the most prominent scar across his upper lip. my raph, my hero, our hero…with the scars to prove it all.

“give it a week and see how the shell starts to heal. if we need to do more then I’m ready for that. I’ve done my research, you’re looking at a certified mutant turtle nurse,” I wink at him as he laughs and nuzzles further into my hold.

he looks up at me with those gorgeous eyes, the light of the moon catching in them. he may be hurt but he’s here with me and healing in my arms, and I’ll hold this man forever to show him how much he means to me. he’s looking at me in the same way - in awe of what’s in front of him - both of us dumbly grinning at each other. although, he does break eye contact when a yawn suddenly comes bursting out.

“do you want to talk about what happened, or do you want to catch some z’s first?”

“hmm…as much as I want to tell you about how much of a badass I am, I really want to crash.”

he moves to lay on his back before I catch his shoulders with high pitched squeak, “shell!” I whisper-yell at him. his lips form an ‘o’ and I shake my head. only raph could forget about his injuries that quickly.

I slip into the bed first and hold out my arms, beckoning him to follow and to lay on his stomach. he does so almost instantly, getting comfy against me and wrapping his arms around my waist.

“thank you for everything. I trust you with my life, you know.”

“and I trust you with mine, big red.”

I’m seemingly stuck staring down at him, just in stupid awe once more. watching how his eyes are effortlessly closed, evident that he is exhausted, with a faint smile playing on his lips as he shifts around to find the best snoozing position. his shell is now what catches the attention of the moon and I feel satisfied with my work on the crack. I’m still worried but the patch looks good and secure from afar so I’ll take it for it now.

I’m so happy that this brave and unstoppable mutant turtle trusts me with his open wounds, with his physical and emotional scars, with his love and being. this life of ours is crazy in so many ways but I wouldn’t ask for anything to change. well, less wounds here and there would be nice but that might be asking for too much.

What inspired you to write a Rise!Leosagi fic?

What was your favorite scene to especially write for A World of Samurais and Ninjas?

Do you listen to music when you write? If so, is it the songs from the playlist you put together for the story, or is it songs that get you into a certain mood for writing?

It’s not a problem at all.

I fell in love with rottmnt. I saw people talking about the movie and I’ve always loved animation so I figured I’d watch it and I got hooked. I love all the characters and their relationships. I love how much it focuses on familia love.

Leo was (obviously) my favorite.

As I went down the rabbit whole that is joking a fandom I saw Usagi’s name popped up and I love doing deep dives and research. This lead to me watching tmnt 2003 episodes for context and deep diving into the Usagi comics lore. I really love the relationship they had in 2003 and wanted more of it but in a universe I was more familiar with. So I went out to find it.

And while there are great leosagi stories in the community both of 2003 variety and of Leo x Yuichi, nothing really hit exactly what I was looking for.

Mind you we would not be here with out “The Rabbit Has Always Loved The Turtle” by HailSam (if someone has their tumblr let me know) and the “The Tortoise and the Hare” series by @bluepeachstudios their stories really had me falling in love with this ship.

I had read and seen plenty what if Leo was thrown into cuz dimension instead of escaping the prison dimension and was like what if. I watching Inuyasha and played Pokémon legends of arceus and something about putting a modern day person in feudal Japan has always been fun for me. So I took inspiration and I wrote.

I have experience helping my friend set up dnd coma pins and making mini intro coma pins for kids who are just learning how to play. And I love world building so it was a fun exercise in my skills. I got to learn more about feudal Japan, the turtles and Usagi. It’s was really fun for me.

I write kinda like how a movie is filmed. I would write what ever scene was in my head at that moment and then figure out how to build up to it. At first I was just playing around. I wrote the flower crown scene first followed by Leo revealing his powers and then the confession and I realized I was to far in not to make it a story. I started laying out all the prices and planing it all out. I knew the ending I wanted right away and now it was just putting the prices together. I also knew I wanted to honor rise and focus on the beautiful family relationships they gave us and build them which is why you get so many chapters with the rise family.

My favorite scenes are probably Usagi seeing leo under the tree (AWoSaN 8) as it is what started this madness. But I also love their confession (AWoSaN 12) and gift exchange (AWoSaN14)

I am also very proud of some of my horror scenes the Krang’s almost escape in (AWoSaN 9) Shingen’s death (TWoFFaF 1) and I am very proud of Hikiji’s backstory as I already have it written but you will have to wait for that.

I actually don’t listen to music while writing. I can do it when I’m sorry boarding or imagine the scenes but not when I’m actually writing. My brain hooks on the the noise around me and then I can’t write or I’m writing the song lyrics. I will listen to instrumental music when editing as long as I don’t know the words to the song. My brain will start sing along to the instrumental and then we’re back to the original problem. So normally it’s me, my thoughts, and my dog who is not happy that I’m writing and instead of petting him

I listen to the playlist I made when I need ideas or need to get into the mood to write/story board. That and to pick out chapter titles.

In conclusion I have the worst case of brain rot and you all get to benefit from my torture.

Okay okay, OKAY OKAY!! I read ch 11 and am GIDDY!! WE GOT THE STEP DAD BACK!!

And let me tell you, seeing commander April O'Neill is great treat indeed!! It made me happy knowing that Karai teached her how to communicate with F!Leo.

I even were in complet shock when i knew Commander is there with P!leo! I hope she can see the brothers and talk to them, Same with F!Leo he deserves it.

Now after P!leo left the bedroom, F!leo told CJ to grab a slice, i Couldn't help but think of old people when they try to sneak candy to their grandkids xD

And " i want 4 slices of different pies with garlic bread " Mhm~ April you have a great taste🥰

But as soon as the human of the surface saw F!Leo i couldn't help but mumble " oh... Fuck! " and suck air as i was panicking, Purple seeing pictures of older leo also doesn't help me mentally.

The fact Commander April's asking blue to hurry make me think; will she vanish once older leo get the herb? And switch from blue to it? Because as she said she's a clock to p!leo.

Then comes CJ's selfie, i laughed at it when donnie " we need to work on his selfie game " but i laughed hard when there was a fly on Old peepaw's nose xD

When they teleport to the rooftop and older leo grabbed blue's wrist out of " old habit "? I was excited!! Like damn yeah 🤩 glad no bones were broken.

Then when leo felt April helps him out gather the energy? I could swear i can imagine her gather snow and make snowball with it... Tho my first thought was her patting leo's head.

And the talk about " first personal slice " i couldn't help but Older leo was talking about pizza while blue was thinking of 'Why Commander april's with him only?'.

But i was so so happy seeing older leo knowing april's with blue, now this gives me more room to think about questions of WDS.

Many about the fact peepaw WDS can't get into relationship without his ghost brothers interfere or judge him.. Wonder if blue would feel the same towards Commander April..?

Karai won’t be a part of the turtle gang in F!Leo’s head (lol) but I’ll sprinkle her in like this every once in a while. But I love the idea of her helping them out as she rests.

And, ya know, Commander just casually hitching a ride in Blue’s head. A normal day in the Hamato household as she plays the alarm for F!Leo’s battery recharge /hj

F!Leo is already well on the way to spoiling Casey Jr with all the goodies in the present. *mischievous hand rubbing*

Yellow knows her worth and she’s going to take advantage of F!Leo’s mischievous antics hahah /j

But yeah, the surface stuff is making me nervous too hahah I have an idea where I want it to lead but also don’t. It could go either way at this point

Commander O’Neil in Blue’s head is just a means to help F!Leo get better. She won’t disappear and I don’t plan on making anyone disappear, this story is for the future brothers to live on through F!Leo… literally lol. And to make fun of F!Leo while F!Leo introduces Casey Jr to the present.

Peepaw Leo is a gross old man who’d scratch his ass after a good nap, and after a good while of sleeping in a tub? He probably stinks horrifically, I’m surprised he doesn’t have more flies

And the sudden wrist-grab is a necessary evil /j (totally not my way of sneaking in a sample of how Commander O’Neil watches over the younger turtles)

The idea in my head for Commander O’Neil helping pack the pieces of Blue’s ninpo into a ball was directly inspired by the snow day episode and I thought how cute it would be if Commander O’Neil hummed their snow day song while helping Blue. :)

And I almost ended the chapter without F!Leo knowing that Commander O’Neil is with Blue, mainly because I initially planned on a different ending that leads to the following chapter. Almost didn’t get the silly “I did all the work!”

About the relationship thing, I don’t plan on F!Leo getting into a relationship because my main focus for this fic is family and recovery. And I don’t really prefer me writing in a romance genre when it comes to the turtles. Idk I don’t think I’m confident in understanding how the turtles would be in relationships and I’d rather not bash their characters with my lack of understanding. After all, I absolutely love the familial aspect of tmnt

But Blue’s feeling of being under Commander O’Neil’s watchful eye is currently in awe of how he met the future counterpart of his big sister April.

46 it seems. Which...look I’m slow man so that’s not surprising. lol Also crippling depression does not make for much production, at least for me.

So do I could only AO3 or in like life? lol I suppose it should only be on AO3 since this is an AO3 ask game. Hrm. Basically AO3 can be summed up as: Marvel (in several iterations - all Avengers related) Torchwood Highlander But isn’t it more fun to consider my entire fandom life, which, I’m sorry, I’m old so...yeah. Not all of this is was published and beyond that a lot is not available anymore...which is likely for the best. Highlander Star Wars Babylon 5 Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers Marvel (again, several iterations also of note Avengers and X-Men both count) Torchwood Star Trek LOTR Stargate (SG-1, SGA) Mortal Kombat I dabbled with the idea of Potter fic but never got past the ideas stage.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

1: You rearrange me till I’m sane Clint finds himself spiraling into a deep depression after the Battle of New York...until the Winter Soldier ends up saving him and inadvertently giving him a new purpose – to save the man that the Soldier had once been – Bucky Barnes. Not one to be outdone, the Soldier decides that his new mission is to ensure that Clint remains alive himself. Protecting a blonde man with a self-destructive streak is somehow very familiar to him. Through the back and forth of who is saving whom they cross the country and learn more about themselves and each other – and perhaps find a reason for living. 2: Five Dates Bucky Didn’t Realize He Was on And the One He Planned Himself To say that Bucky was surprised when Clint kissed him was an understatement. But it was nothing compared to the shock he felt when he learned they'd been dating for months without him realizing it.Clint gets whisked away for a mission before they have time to talk and Bucky is left to figure things out on his own - hindsight being 20/20 he can't help but wonder how he missed things the first go around.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not.

I really really really want to do it but I often times don’t end up doing it. There are a few reasons. First, I am akwward AF and bad at interaction adn I feel like just saying thank you would be...not enough? Second - I often times tend to like...turtle (aka retreat into myself) when life gets Too Hard/Busy which happens a lot to me (sigh) and then I miss the vague window in my mind in which it would be okay to respond and then it’s even more weird. I do love and cherish all of them. Like there was one months ago that made me go “hmm...I didn’t think I was going to do a sequel to that fic (You rearrange me till I’m sane), timestamp glimpses sure but a sequel hadn’t come to mind” but then the comment made me think! So...who knows? lol Anyway, I literally have been rereading some in an effort to try and get myself going again. Know that if you have commented, I love you.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

At the moment? Probably: Look at you look at me Bucky's in love with Clint - problem is he's really not supposed to be. For Winterhawk Week 2019 - Forbidden Love (I really don’t want to give away the spin in the fic but...if you’re familiar with the Secret Avengers Vol 2 run circa 2013ish (aka when SHIELD initially ‘took control of the team’) that’s a bit of a hint as to the spin). Were it done, Torch Song would be up there. ;) Torch Song Clint is sent back in time, via an alien device, to 1938. While he tries to figure out how to get back home, he takes up singing and entertaining to make ends meet and does his best to not disrupt the timeline.Then he meets a 21 year old Bucky Barnes. --- A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship.

7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?

Does *wanting* to write crossovers count? lol I want, so badly, to do more crossovers and fusions (which...are kinda deeper versions of crossovers in a way). The only one I do have posted is a crossover between Highlander and Torchwood -

The Immortal Mr. Jones A series of vignettes (some long, some short) in the life of the newly immortal Ianto Jones. My most ambitions project that I have been working on since late 2011/early 2012 is a fusion of the Avengers with Stephen King’s the Stand. I will get that done at some point *shakes fist*  The Stand, for those who don’t know it, is an epic 1000+ page novel about a flu epidemic (I know) that wipes out over 99% of the population and then two figures representing Good and Evil pull the survivors in two directions for a showdown. So basically it’s a non-powered modern AU set in that universe. It’s a passion and comfort project. lol

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes. Well, minor bitching back when I was in a prior fandom because I tagged a pairing in a fic but it was pre-slash and not labeled as pre-slash. I got hate on...I think it was Torch Song? And I’ve gotten hate on tumblr re me and my fic in general as well. Fandom! *jazz hands* Oh! And I’ve also been hit by those reviewers within Winterhawk (among general Clint pairings actually) who like rate you on either number scales or the “meh” scale. Which isn’t hate exactly but...it’s passive aggressive bullshit because I can’t believe none of them realize at this point that the authors can see their bookmarks - you know?

9. Do you write smut?

Yes. Do I write it well? I have no idea. lol

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware of. Well...there was, I think, one of those reposting sites that had a few fics on it but I don’t think it was being passed off as someone else’s? I can’t quite recall. It’s why I have a note on AO3 about reposting my work anyway.

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not entirely, but sort of. Let me explain - I am part of a PBEM game; which for those unfamiliar since it’s a term that was most heavily in use 15-20 years ago, in which you basically do a round robin type writing thing but rather than everyone writing the same characters you write your own characters and you play off what other people have done. Another way of looking at it is  it’s basically DnD without dice and written down rather than done out loud. You also don’t have to all be around at the same time. It’s a lot of fun and yes I have been in it for 20 years even though there aren’t many of us left but they are some of my dearest friends and fabulous writers. Wins all around.  One of the other writers and I have actually toyed with the idea of doing a co-written fic actually, mostly because we work super well together and keep getting ideas for things but can’t really do them as rpgs since the pbem style isn’t used much anymore.

12. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Winterhawk probably. Though, let’s be real - Han & Leia are epic and amazing as are John & Delenn (from Babylon 5).

13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Does wanting to expand The Black Stallion books as a wee child count? lol Not much of that was written save for world building ideas but there was a great oral tradition of telling stories to my friends. Otherwise...maybe a tie between Star Wars and Highlander. Star Wars was a love since I was super young but the writing bug didn’t hit me until around the same time Highlander was a thing as well.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? You rearrange me till I’m sane for sure. Though Torch Song, if it were finished, would be tied I imagine (I suck at picking favorites). The nerve some people have! Haha I know I would be pissed if people were questioning my intelligence like that especially after a couple of drinks in haha. Though I do like taunting people when I play group games, I'll be like "don't need to try that hard guys, you're gonna lose anyway" just to mess with them or just call people sore losers if they accuse me of cheating haha (they're probably right on the accusations tho). People get real mad sometimes it's kinda funny. 😂

Omg literally laughed out loud reading this! Hahaha, how did you manage to fall over a road sign then end up in a ditch? lol omg hope you didn't get hurt too bad 😂 I was trying to downplay my drunken escapades but since you shared yours I should tell you my worst one:

I was at this summer street party at night and got drunk on something made out of tropical herbs and cachaça (which is about 48% alcohol), drank 3 and a half bottles of that like it was apple juice, made friends with a bunch of strangers in a bathroom queue (who tried to talk to me weeks later but I had no idea who they were), had to be held by my best friend while I peed (mostly missing the toilet), fell in the middle of the street and scraped my knee, threatened this boy who was helping me walk and told him not to try anything funny or I would beat him up, then dragged my friends to the beach and left them shortly after to go make out with my ex, came back with lipstick all over my mouth and chin and when my friends asked what I was doing I said I was just talking to my ex and they were like NO YOU WERE NOT, hahaha then I kissed all my girl friends on a dare and we danced under the full moon, then I told my best friend I had to puke so she took me to the ocean but I changed my mind and happened to step on a dead turtle on the way back and started crying bc of it, but last month my best friend told me it was a rock I had stepped on (I believed it was a dead turtle for 7 years!). Had the worst hangover of my life the next day. ✌️✨

Oh I could talk about Dani and Jamie forever I think. I love the beast in the jungle speech too and it's so painful to watch, VP delivered that beautifully, but I have to admit I'm always a crying mess from episode 1 when older Jamie starts reciting that song about being sad while waiting for her lover to return, this show is fucking cruel I hate it and love it at the same time hahaha. I used to draw a lot, really loved doing it when I was a kid as I said before, and all throughout adulthood too but I haven't done that in almost a year now bc I've got a bit of a case of burnout I guess, it just takes a lot of effort to do it when it shouldn't be like that at all. I used to do fanart too, for other fandoms. Even made one for Dani x Jamie but ended up not liking how it turned out haha. I've got a lot of respect for writers and fanfic writers also! Yall can make words make sense in really interesting and beautiful ways, build worlds so enthralling I can see them vividly in my head. Writing is such an incredibly fascinating skill to have! And I guess the most important thing is that we enjoy doing these things right? Even if we think we're not particularly good at it.

I was fine and was just laid laughing while my friend looked down at me and in the most northern accent ever just said "get up you dickhead." and helped me off of the floor and then asked if I was okay... and I was so it was all good!! Haha 😂 I love this drunken story that sounds like one hell of a night and is a roller coaster from start to finish!! I'm sorry you thought you had stood on a dead turtle for 7 years though, someone really should've told you that it was just a rock!! But that sounds like my kind of night!! I love nights like that... stories that will last a life time... the only down side is the hangover... luckily I have only ever had one hang over in my life and it wasn't the morning after the road sign fiasco... I am so enjoying all your responses to the y/n topic. I used to read a lot of online original fiction and never actually encountered y/n before. Is there a reason as to why y/n or blank names are chosen for fanfiction? Or is it because most fanfiction is written in that second pov?

So, a lot of the people who don’t read/write reader-insert fics will assume that what’s going on is either that 1) readers can only stand the idea of BTS being with them specifically or will get jealous or 2) that fanfic writers can’t be bothered to create original characters. But I think both of these are oversimplifications that ignore how excellent reader-insert fics can be. 

I frequently read reader-insert, member ship, and original female character stories and have read excellent and terrible versions of each. But now I want to make some arguments in favor of reader-insert fics. 

1. Exposition is boring

Lots of exposition without any action or conflict makes for a boring story. And a common pitfall of trying to write an original character is assuming that you have to tell the audience their entire backstory and physical description in the first three paragraphs or something. This is what often leads to the cliched “character describes themselves while looking in a mirror” scene or the “we go through a whole normal boring day in the characters life before anything interesting happens” problem. This stuff isn’t necessary when writing original characters, but amateur authors assume it is when trying to write their first original characters and it makes for a boring story. 

With a reader-insert, because you are purposefully not describing much about their background or appearance, the story often jumps into action faster. 

2. A lot of “Original Female Characters” are just the author inserting themselves into the fic

This isn’t surprising and it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes authors have very distinct and interesting voices that then carry over to their characters. But I find it weird that putting a character that is obviously you into a story is somehow perceived of as “nobler” than a reader-insert. 

I particularly enjoy the inclusiveness of reader-inserts in terms of race and body type, as long as they aren’t accidentally written in a way that is exclusionary. With original female characters, there is often a moment for me where something in the story makes me feel badly about myself in comparison to the female romantic lead like “what if my boobs aren’t perky enough? what if high-waisted jeans make me look fat? what if my messy ponytail is actually just messy and not in any way secretly hot?”

3. 2nd POV is more immersive

So I recently read John Green’s Turtles All The Way Down and in the climax of the novel, the POV suddenly switches from what has been 1st person for the majority of the story to 2nd person. I won’t go into what’s happening in that scene because I don’t want to spoil it for people, but it’s clear that John Green made that artistic choice because in that moment he really wants to force the audience to feel the thoughts inside the main character’s mind directly. And 2nd person is more effective at that. I think that’s why so many of us use it to write porn. 😂

I’m not trying to say any particular way of writing is better than the others. The craft and the story you tell are much more important than whatever POV you chose to use and I have read excellent stories with all of the different POVs. I just think reader-inserts are unfairly maligned.

Or: The Hologram Story Nobody Asked For

Hey everyone! So I’ve begun working on the alternate ending- which is to say that I’ve finally finished writing the actual story!

Would you all prefer to have updates spaced out, once a week or so, or given to you all at once?

I’ll be updating again on the 18th, so you have until then to vote!

          Michelle Unwin was not a proud woman. She was not a pillar of strength, or monumentally kind- but she was loyal. To the point of fault, when she allowed herself to be blind, but loyal nonetheless. She understood the necessity of secrets, of doublespeak and hidden caches, and knew that there was a time and a place for most everything one could imagine.

          But she was also an impatient woman, desperate to finally finish bridging the gap between she and Eggsy. The one she had accidentally widened by pushing too far in the wake of Merlin’s visit. Eggsy’d rung back later and apologised, but she hadn’t really thought about it all that much until Harry had come by. She hadn’t really bothered to try and see the whole picture.

‘Hey, babes, want to come by for dinner? Makin’ Daisy’s favourite, and I know she’d love to see you- don’ say you’re not feeling well, I was havin’ a chat with Harry earlier and he said you was just lazing about the house.’ She paused, phone propped between her shoulder and head, before nodding. ‘I’ll see you tonight, then- give Harry my love.’ There was a muffled squawking from the phone, I can’t just go and give Harry love, mum, but Michelle cut it off with a small giggle.

          ‘Eggsy coming?’ Daisy tugged at the end of Michelle’s shirt, and she picked her daughter up and tossed her gently in the air.

          ‘Yes is is, flower, and we are gonna make his favourite cookies,’ Michelle kissed one cheek, ‘and your favourite dinner,’ the other, ‘and you’re going to help me pick some flowers for the table, yeah?’ 

          ‘Yeah!’ Daisy ran from the room, and Michelle heard the telltale sound of the back door opening. Eggsy would accept a handful of weeds from her with all the grace of a prima ballerina, but she’d try to at least get Daisy to clear the dirt off, first.

          ‘Harry, did I do something?’ Eggsy padded down the stairs, one hand pulling at the hairs at the back of his head as the other started confusedly at his phone. Harry looked up from his place at the dining table briefly before returning to his newspaper.

          ‘I have no idea- you tend to do a rather large number of things on any given day.’

          ‘Ha ha ha, smartarse- why’s my mum know I was home relaxing today?’

          ‘I… wasn’t aware that was a secret? She rang earlier and I mentioned that you were home today... and had only come down from your room an hour or so ago.’ Harry shrugged and turned back to his tea, and Eggsy groaned, dragging a hand down his face before glaring at Harry who, for all intents and purposes, shrugged him off.

          ‘Do you know the last time I had a day where I just got to… be when it wasn’t medical-mandated bed rest?’ Eggsy threw himself down into the chair opposite.

          ‘I don’t keep a detailed mental calendar of your life, Eggsy-’ lie ‘but if your mother and sister want to see you, is it really such a hardship? In fact,’ Harry turned in his seat, and put down his cup, ‘weren’t you saying just a few days ago that you missed them?’ Eggsy flushed and looked away.

          ‘For fuck’s sake- of course I miss them- it’s no’ like being a Kingsman comes with regular hours and shit.’ Harry looked skyward and huffed a breath, why was Eggsy being purposefully obtuse?

          ‘Then what’s the problem?’ Eggsy muttered something that Harry couldn’t make out, and Harry deflated. ‘Eggsy, what’s stopping you from enjoying a meal with your family?’

          ‘I dunno, okay?! I miss them when I’m not around ‘em and then I get there and I feel like an outsider! Mum talks about her work and Daisy’s school and I have to make up some cock and bull story about some ponce and his fabric choices, and-’ Eggsy cut himself off, jaw clenched and Harry leant forward to rest one hand on his shoulder.

          ‘And?’ He dared not point out that lying about his duties as a Kingsman was entirely his own choice at this point. Being a Kingsman came with many risks, and Harry could not fault him for trying to protect the few that were his own- no matter that Michelle had all but figured it out on her own, but Eggsy had no way of knowing that.

          ‘Nothing, Harry. Just tired, is all- I wanted to go back to bed, but we don’ always get what we want, yeah?’ Harry took the deflection at face value- he was not one to push or pry into Eggsy’s personal thoughts if they were not offered freely.

          ‘No, we don’t, unfortunately; but even if it will be a difficult evening, for whatever reason,’ Harry mad eye contact, and smiled softly, ‘you will feel better for it in the morning. Rest is more than physical, after all. So you’re going to go and enjoy dinner with your family, and I’m not going to hear a word otherwise- okay, Eggsy?’

          ‘Yes, Harry.’ Their eyes met, and Eggsy pat the hand on his shoulder once before he sat up from the table and made his way back to his room. While pulling together his clothes- clean, but unfolded and scattered around the room in piles, an organised mess is the only mess- Eggsy remembered his mother’s other instruction before she’d hung up on him. He grinned, and pulled out a pen and a spare bit of paper. See, he’d been the shit in school who had remembered all the useless bits of information he stumbled upon when he was supposed to be working hard.

          For example, how to make a jumping origami frog.

          Eggsy had made hundreds of them- they were easy to make, easy to destroy, and had infinite possibilities of shenanigans when used proper. Draw (or imagine) a circle and you’ve got target practise. Just about anywhere. How small could you make one and still make it jump? How big was just too big? Did cardstock work better than construction paper, or was it too brittle? Paper didn’t make noise and didn’t make a mess, so Dean had never been suspect- and even if he had done, paper was necessary for school and shit. He always had paper.

          Eggsy pulled the cap from the pen and doodled a bit, wrote Michelle’s love in the midst of the senseless scribbling, and got to folding. He gave the finished product a set of eyes, and went about his getting ready for dinner.

          Harry hadn’t moved from his position at the dining table, though he had acquired some biscuits in Eggsy’s absence. Eggsy pat his pockets down with one hand, double checking that he had what he needed, before placing his paper creation on the edge of the table. Harry didn’t look away from his paper, so Eggsy took his opportunity to gauge a goal before pressing his finger to the end and letting it fly.

          The frog landed wrong side up between the edge of the table and the paper. Eggsy threw both fists into the air briefly and grinned to himself as Harry blinked and reached for the unexpected intruder.

          ‘For you!’ Eggsy sauntered out the front door, and left a confused Harry with the paper frog cupped in one hand behind him.

          ‘Door’s open!’ It was muffled, but Eggsy heard well enough and let himself into his mum’s house. Daisy was in the sitting room, laying on a plush purple blanket that was wholly unfamiliar to Eggsy and playing with a doll. She didn’t look up from her doll as he made his way into the house.

          ‘Hey, mum,’ Michelle was pulling off mitts, a tray of oddly-shaped bread rolls sitting on the stove, as Eggsy bent his head to press a kiss to her cheek, ‘brought a bottle of that gross bubbly lemonade you like so much. An’ some of the normal kind for Dais’ and I.’ Eggsy dodged the hand that swat out at him with a laugh, put the bottles into the fridge, and ducked back out into the sitting room. ‘Look how big you’ve grown, Daisy!’

          ‘Eggsy!’ Daisy tossed down the doll, careless in a way Eggsy was envious of, before launching herself at him. Eggsy let himself be toppled by her weight, laughing loudly even as his head hit the floor and Daisy propped herself atop his chest. ‘You was gone too long- I missed you.’ Eggsy sat up, cradled Daisy in his arms, and pressed his face firmly into her hair.

          ‘Missed you, too, flower- promise I’ll try to come ‘round more.’ Eggsy spoke softly, eyes shut tightly as if by will alone he could stop himself from feeling like an awful brother. ‘I’ll bring proper prezzies, too- but this time I jus’ brought some lemonade for us.’

          ‘No bubbles?’ Daisy pulled back, brows scrunched together and a small frown on her face, and Eggsy chuckled.

          ‘No bubbles.’

          ‘M’kay. We’s having mac ’n cheese and turtles for dinner!’

          ‘Daisy, you wan’ to show Eggsy how to set the table? It’s been a long time, he prolly don’t remember how to do it right.’ Michelle called from the kitchen, and together the Unwin siblings set the table, Eggsy taking each instruction from Daisy very seriously, and asking if he did it right each time. Eventually, after several no, Eggsy, it goes over here see?’s, the three sat at the table, a small plate piled high with bread-roll turtles and a large bowl of mac ’n cheese passed between them.

          Dinner passed with such ease Eggsy was convinced he was dreaming. He hadn’t spent time with his mum proper since the whole Harry fiasco. Oh, he’d come by now and again but it was always quick, always more of a ‘look I’m alive’ than an honest bit of time spent with the little family he had left. He just… hadn’t known how to move past that moment. 

          He��d apologised, he knew he’d reacted too harshly to what was obviously his mum tryin’ to be, y’know, a mum- but it didn’t feel like enough and Eggsy just… didn’t know what to do. So he avoided the problem, and threw himself into his missions, and he knew it was unhealthy but he couldn’t make himself stop- til his mum and Harry teamed up, apparently. So now, here he was, scrubbing up after dinner, side-by-side at the sink with her, wishing he had words.

          ‘Eggsy, babes? You got anywhere to be?’ Eggsy took a breath, slowly as not to give away how close to breaking down he was, and shook his head, refusing to look away from the dish he was drying.

          ‘Nah, mum, I’m free an’ clear for the next day or so.’ True nobility is being superior to your former self. Maybe he wasn’t quite ready- but, honestly, would he ever be? Had to take a first step somewhere, right?

          ‘Well, let’s put Daisy to bed, and then… maybe, you an’ I can chat a bit?’ Michelle’s voice wavered, but her eyes never left the sink where her hands were idly messing with the suds under the pretense of searching the murky water for more dishes to clean. 

          ‘Sounds good, mum.’

Fanfic Rec list PART 2!

Fanfic Rec List Part 2: (All stories found on AO3. I would do the cool link through the title thing but that requires tech skills that I don’t have… cause I have none… I can barely post on tumblr)

Satisfaction Brought it Back @siderealsandman

I am not going to lie- when I saw Miraculous Ladybug and BDSM in the same tag set I was hesitant. However eventually I caved to the high kudos ratings and I am SO glad I did. This story is an absolute gem. Not only does it handle a somewhat controversial subject with breathtaking sensitivity and care, but the actual build up of the romance is some of the best I have seen in the fandom. It is the best kind of slow burn (in a smut fic no less??? ) and leaves you really cheering for the characters. (This is NSFW so know that going in) 

Trouble in White @imthepunchlord

Another author with many great titles to their name, however this one in particular jumps out at me. Anyone who has ever had a longer than 2 minute conversation with me about fanfics would know that i am a very harsh judge of soulmate AUs for a variety of reasons, so the fact that i have 2 on this list is saying something. This fic also did something very refreshing with the “Chat Blanc” troupe which is what caught my attention in the first place. The story really emphasizes what Adrien and Marinette can bring to each other in a relationship by taking away the Ladynoir dynamic and having them building to the same sort of trust and support in a more round about way. A great read that I highly recommend. ^_^

Summer in the City kali_asleep (don’t know tumblr url ::sobs:: ) 

This fic is just so fun! And sexy. Getting to watch Adrien struggle with his feelings for Ladybug and dedication to her while being attracted to his classmate is just endearing. This is only 3 chapters long (with an additional explicit sequel for you sinners out there) so if you want something quick to brighten up your day I highly recommend it.

Straying off the beaten path a little bit- this is a HawkNath Soulmate AU.

Yes you heard me.

This is worth every second of your time to read it. From Nathalie’s POV it’s a great look at dealing with a difficult situation and a difficult person and finding the balance between being forgiving and knowing when it’s time to punch someone in the face. (Literally)

Psyche by poppicock ( @gabriel-fucking-agreste on tumblr)

My other “Older generation” rec on today’s list- this was a story that was actually recommended to me and I am going to be honest- I was a little skeptical going in. I tend to not get invested in “Alternate” miraculous users (and by that I mean things that are highly unlike in canon or directly contradict canon). Nothing wrong with them just not something that really clicks for me. However this story sold me. Nathalie centered again and Gabe/Nath ship based, this story really hits home with the “Agreste Family Feels” as I like to call them. The lore building was really neat and I did NOT see the plot twist coming- which is not something I say often. This fic is a great example of why it’s a good idea to be willing to look outside your normal ship zone. It can be worth the adventure.

Won’t Tell as Soul/The Weight of Jade @thelastpilot

Turtle!Nino I will continue to be devoted to the hope of you happening someday ^_^

I will be shocked if you guys don’t already know about this universe, but even so it deserves to be called out. I adore the dynamic that is established between Nino and his assorted friends as well as seeing one of my favorite characters get the development they deserve. The other thing I love about this story is that at least from what I saw, the writing gets better every chapter, and I love seeing a good author (I had already read several of Pilots earlier works at this point) truly find their voice.

Talk to Me by 1004_Angel ( @the-noble-idiot  on tumblr)

Ok I am going to admit this now- I am a sucker for Non-magic AUs. I will always give them a shot when I am scrolling through AO3 looking for new fics. This one caught my attention and kept the same engaging, fun dynamic that got me hooked all the way through to the end. There is a really nice balance of tension where we get to see the characters dancing around each other’s lives without feeling like it is being drawn out just for the sake of torturing the readers.

You don’t Know Me @ferisae

OK, so I am not usually all about the angsty train- and this story definitely cranks the the angst dial up to the max. (Seriously give poor Chat a break my poor baby!) However the story is wonderfully compelling and this is one of the few fics I have walked away from remembering the akumas we have encountered because of the attention and care given to the action sequences, which I really appreciate seeing in a fic. Tom and Sabine feature heavily as well and they are just such a blessing. If you don’t mind crying your eyes out, this is a well done story that is worth getting invested in.

It’s February 15th, time once again to celebrate International Fanworks Day! Seriously, how great is that? Whether it’s books, movies, comics, games or television series, fanworks make up a huge part of their communities. This year I’m tackling UNDERTALE, the game that most people (myself included) fell in love with and whose fandom is still going strong more than a year later.

Some of them have been completed, some of them are only partially done, and some of them have been forgotten. Regardless of their status, I think they’re special and amazing and I hope you will love them as much as I do. I’ll do my best to leave out any spoilers.

Death by Glamour

Here’s a neat animatic featuring our favorite human and robot. Animated by Alyssa Gerwing, this video makes their battle look really cool, bringing the fight sequence out of the box and into UNDERTALE’s real world. You have to love the pacing and timing, which is perfectly in sync with the boss music. The facial expressions really give it something extra, whether it be humor or drama. What a stylish video! @walkingmelonsaaa

Papyrus Finds a Human

This animation was an unexpected delight. This was not the cutesy video I thought it would be. With it’s mild swearing and cartoon violence, Mike (a.k.a. Piemations) created a brilliantly funny video. The voice acting is flawless. The punchlines hit home. Papyrus is the best. I can’t write much else without giving all the best bits away. Just go experience it for yourself. As an added bonus, I highly recommend turning on the subtitles while watching the video for the second time. You will not be disappointed.

UNDERTALE ANNIVERSARY

This animation blew me away. I was a fan of iscoppie’s Game Grumps animations before this, but wow. This six-minute video depicts a moment I rarely see people tackle: how Undyne and Alphys met. It’s a bittersweet meeting when you really think about it, and this animation captures and balances all of the emotions involved: fear, hope, resignation, awe. The colors are gorgeous, the voice talent is wonder, and the music is beautiful. This is the best UNDERTALE tribute to date. @iscoppie

The Sons of Gaster

There are many theories as to how, or even if, Sans and Papyrus are connected to W.D. Gaster. One popular theory is that they were created by the doctor. This two-part comic series by sansybones depicts the skeleton brothers’ beginnings: their time with Gaster, growing and gaining independence, and how the two bros become family. The black-and-white style–with the occasional blue–is very effective and looks really nice. I especially love Papyrus’ facial expressions; they capture his personality perfectly. One thing I do appreciate is that this isn’t just a Sans story. Papyrus is just as important and has just as much focus and growth. Sansybones’ depiction of the UNDERTALE characters is fantastic. Their feelings, struggles, and personalities feel genuine and sincere. It’s an emotional roller coaster well worth the ride. @sansybones

They Say He Shattered

I’m a big fan of the multiverse theory. I’ve talked about it extensively in regards to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you’re like me, then this comic is right up your alley. Emily plays with the idea of timelines collapsing and converging in They Say He Shattered, creating the best kind of mess. It’s a fascinating story that balances humor and seriousness very well. Each game ending results in another dimension, but it seems the very fabric of time and space has been broken. Characters come face-to-face with different realities or feel the effects of forces on their other selves. Some things happen out of order. Some things that never should have been are now possible. It’s really hard to explain, but well worth a read. I’m really excited to get to the bottom of this mystery. @theysayheshattered

A CHARActer Analysis

Normally when we think of “fanwork” we think of art, music, fanfiction, cosplay, videos, and animation. However, this thesis bears recognition. Toby Fox created a cast of characters rich in personality and full of life. Chara is one of the only characters in UNDERTALE to be almost unanimously revered and portrayed as one-dimensional. They’re evil and hate humanity and that’s the end of that. Only it’s not. In this analysis we are shown every detail we may have missed. Chara’s story is scattered throughout the game. There are so many subtle hints and clues that most people wouldn’t notice or even think twice about. This in-depth thesis is by far the best explanation of who/what Chara is, who they were, and their role in the overall game. With all of this evidence, you may find yourself viewing Chara in a completely different light. @thefloweryfanclub

Never a Lovely So Real

Of all the UNDERTALE AU’s, the Gangster/Mob AU is my big favorite. I adore this AU, and this fanficiton was heaven-sent. Kaesa’s Never a Lovely So Real is loosely based on Hnery’s neat headcanons and spectacular art surrounding the Gangster AU. This story is told from Sans’ point of view as he tries to keep the family safe. You have all of your favorite major characters playing their roles in the operation, while a lot of minor characters show up frequently as well. I really appreciate that Sans and Alphys are science bros and have to work as a team. I normally don’t like a who lot of new characters being added into fanfictions, but here it works. Getting to know the rival gang members goes to show that not everything is black-and-white, especially in these types of situations. Much like the game, the “bad guys” aren’t always bad guys. One of the greatest things about this fanfiction is how much research and knowledge went into it. I was impressed by how authentic this story felt the first time I read through it. Kaesa did her homework and it shows. There’s mystery. There’s action. There’s romance. There’s suspense. This is a great work. Did I mention the Gangster AU was my favorite? @kaesaaurelia 

Under Shield

Here we have my favorite post-true-pacifist story. Under Shield by Fantasia Wandering is a series of fics told out of order telling of Frisk growing up and growing into their role as ambassador, as well as dealing with their past and becoming part of a family again. Frisk is given a lot of character and background, but it never seems like too much. Frisk is a person with big feelings and big thoughts, and sometimes they can weigh too heavily on their mind. These feelings, accompanied with the struggles of growing up, are relatable to everyone and make it easy to slip into Frisk’s shoes. Although Frisk is the main focus, some of the main cast have important developments as well. One of the most powerful chapters in this series is the eighth part: Penance. Asgore’s redemption arc is a prominent theme throughout the series. He’s not immediately forgiven for his sins by Toriel, or even himself. This in turn affects his relationship with Frisk. It’s a process that takes many years and the reader is there for each important step. This fic’s strongest suit is its stunning imagery. The environments Fantasia has created are painted so vividly. Any reader can picture the settings in great detail. Overall, this is one well-written series. @fantasiawandering

Blood of the Covenant

Remember when PTA Sans was a thing? Well, this is the PTA slice-of-life UNDERTALE story the fans deserve. Blood of the Covenant takes place nearly a decade after the game. Everyone has grown up–and it shows–but they still retain their character. Doni’s characterization is so on point. This fic has the most realistic high school you’ll ever find. None of that Lifetime or Disney Channel nonsense here. The history teacher coaches the football team, the PTA is a hot mess, and aside form a few ass-hats the kids are generally nice and friendly. (Is this my high school? I feel like this was based on my high school.) The story’s strongest appeal is that every character’s time is balanced and utilized effectively. This cast is huge and yet every single one of them has their time to shine. I’ve read a lot of UNDERTALE PTA fics and most of them are a lot of fun, but a common trend in those stories is that the human members of the PTA (Linda, Helen, etc.) are usually so cartoonish and two-dimensional, like their only purpose is to be ignorant evil villains. Here our antagonists are fleshed out. They have feelings, struggles, even arcs of their own. They learn and grow just as the protagonists do. This is a fantastic, well-rounded story. I lost so much sleep the first time I read through it because I could not stop. It was all worth it, though. I promise. @doniblogs

The Scientist

This is my favorite pre-game scenario. Out of all the fanfictions I’ve read, this two-part series written by Pen has the best portrayal of Dr. W.D. Gaster and his backstory. The first part of the series, The Scientist, revolves around the life and times of the royal scientist before Dr. Alphys got the job. The passage of time feels seamless, from the point of monsters’ imprisonment to the end of Gaster’s existence. It makes sense and goes right along with UNDERTALE’s timeline. Everything fits together like a puzzle. I could go on and on about the relationship between Gaster and Sans. It is just so strong and told very well. They are co-workers instead of father and son as I’ve seen in many fanfictions. (I prefer the colleague dynamic, actually.) The audience can get a real sense that their bond teeters between healthy camaraderie and toxic friendship, eventually falling to the side of the latter. The second part in the series, Entropy, shifts the focus onto Sans and how he deals with the aftermath of Gaster’s disappearance. It shows Sans’ own decline; he is deteriorating into the character we see in-game. This story is as well-written and intriguing as its predecessor. It paints by far the most natural, realistic relationship between Papyrus and Sans. Their situation, their dialogue, and their banter is so believable. There’s something really pure about it that just makes me smile. This series, you guys. This series. @talkingsoup

I JUST SAW THE NEW PREVIEW AND I AM SCREAMING!!!!!!!  I’m so ridiculously excited to read the full scene!  It’s entirely possible some of the noises I made were not entirely in the normal human register.  There was probably some blushing and flailing (read: there was definitely some blushing and flailing.)  Peter being all shy and trying to cover it with sass.  Chris being so confused about just what the implication of the offer was.  Noah being amused at both of them but also not even fully letting Peter ask before bursting out with an emphatic yes.  My precious awkward turtles, I love all of them so!

And if you would like my perspective as an American who would have been just a few years behind the boys in school, I will say that it’s highly likely they would have known about some methods of contraception and such, even if their parents weren’t the type to bring it up.  In that sort of post-emergence of the AIDS crisis time period, safe sex became a thing that was hammered into you in health classes, after-school specials, etc, unless you lived in the much more rural, conservative areas (so I guess with Chris it would depend partially on where all he lived growing up?)  Now their ability to (legally) access anything like condoms, etc, would have been much more iffy (though the idea of John, Talia, or Deuc offering to get some for Peter is hysterical to imagine.)  How much they would have cared about/been stopped by this lack of access is really a matter of character interpretation, though :D

I’m so down for attempted family prank shenanigans.  (Also, side note, the best way to find Linden’s Insta is actually through links from his Twitter.  He had to do one of the variation things, like Hoechlin, because someone was already using his name for one.  His vibe is pretty much a combo of aging surfer dude and MASSIVE dad energy.)  Actually speaking of family shenanigans, may I put forth the idea of game nights?  Can you imagine them sitting around playing Apples to Apples or Monopoly (and how many fights between Stiles and Jackson this might cause)?  Or even better, when the younger kids are off at a sleepover, or at least busy in another room, the older kids and the parents sitting around playing Cards Against Humanity?  Seeing who can manage to make the group break through card chosen or the reading of said card (and boy are there some doozies to choose from)?  I feel like the best at maintaining a complete deadpan presentation or reaction would be Noah, Jordan, Erica, and Lydia.

I had to look up some of those music ideas (and boy are my YouTube algorithms probably confused right now), but yes, I love all of those.  Especially Peter’s, because it reminds me of a headcanon/scene I thought of for a fic I will never actually write because I am a coward where Noah wanders into the kitchen one morning to find Peter making breakfast and full-on rocking out to Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” in nothing but an ancient BH Sheriff’s Dept t-shirt and a pair of boxer briefs.  With Chris I just keep going back to the ball thing because one of the few Nickelback songs I know is “Something in Your Mouth”. XD  So, I have a fun story for “Never Gonna Give You Up”!  When two of my friends got married, they had a friend of the groom’s be the officiant.  Rgiht before he got to the part with the vows and having them repeat after him, it only took me like one or two lines into his lead in speech to go “…wait a minute this sounds familiar…”, at which point he began having them recite the lyrics to that song as their wedding vows.  Pretty sure everyone was cracking up (I mean, the ceremony took place in the middle of a zombie walk with all of us in full costume.  no one was expecting anything normal, but still.  that was hilarious.)  But oh god, can you imagine if any of the kids ever figured out Chris liked that song?  The sheer amount of rick-rolling that would occur boggles the mind.  The things Jackson could try to talk Danny into using his tech skills to do.  It might be one of the things Stiles and Jackson could bond over.  For Noah, maybe he heard them while he had some kid pulled over one day and was like “well that’s stupidly catchy” (because it is), or maybe Stiles had some of their albums at one point, and he kept hearing them and realized he rather liked it, so snuck in and burned himself a copy at some point?  I also considered suggesting ABBA, because that also seems like one of those out of left field choices.  And omg, yes, on the Caramelldansen.  I feel like they’d play it up even more once they notice how horrified their older kids were, because they’re assholes like that.  (Related if you want it to be note: Did you know YouTube has a 10 hour loop of the Swedish version?)

The funniest thing to me with the kids eating the dog cookies is how often it happens and how rarely it gets noticed.  And they always pick the nastiest ones, too.  If they’re gonna do it, they should wait until Christmas, that’s when we get the ones that are basically like the blandest sugar-style cookies ever (I will neither conform nor deny having taken a plate of those to a party once, because I, too, am sometimes an asshole)  And yeah, I don’t get the cat water thing either, particularly since the tap water in our area is actually really good quality.  Some other entertaining stories I forgot last time:

1) Our corporate office told us we had to start carrying snakes, so now we have a ball python named Julius Squeezer.

2) Speaking of eating weird things, we once had a group of college kids come in on a scavenger hunt and one of them bought and ate a feeder fish to check an item off their list.

3) A guy who worked in one of the other businesses apparently lost a bet of some kind and had to come up to our front doors after hours, dressed as a cat, and rub all over them and generally act like a cat wanting back in the house.  We know this because the whole thing was caught on one of the security cameras, and it ended up getting shown at the company holiday party, and one of our cashiers was like “Hey I recognize him.”

4) We have a cardboard stand-up of Rachel Ray (a celebrity chef) that we have to have out because we just started carrying her pet food, and this thing is the stuff of nightmares.  It is technically life-size in that it is about as tall as I am, but the proportions aren’t quite right.  All the employees are weirded out by it.  Every time you walk past it, you can feel it’s soulless gaze following you, mocking you with it’s dead eyes and rictus grin.  Recently it got damaged, and my boss had to temporarily move it until it could be repaired.  Unfortunately (and perhaps coincidentally) the spot he chose was directly across from the employee entrance, so that was the first thing they’d see entering the building.  I witnessed some great reactions that day.  I wish I’d gotten to see the ones from when he took my suggestion back when we first received it to slide it behind one of our propped open warehouse doors so that the face was right where the little window in the door is.  Apparently one of my coworkers jumped a solid two feet when someone pointed it out to him.  I was probably more proud of myself for suggesting it than I should have been, but oh well.

Glad you were spared having to attempt public transport.  I can’t imagine how nerve-wracking that would be right now.  Hope your day has somewhat improved (I know other people who work tech support, I understand there’s only so far up that part of it can go), at least!

No seriously, my workday was absolute shite and I come out of work and I see this wonderful message and my god my friend. You made me smile today. I smiled for the first time today when I read this.

I’m so excited to read your response to this chapter, I’m just so excited and that’s what’s keeping me going. Because I really feel like crying and giving up for a bit. But this, this means so much to me. Thank you <3

I’m definitely going to need people to have a little bit of suspension of disbelief I guess. I mean, yeah, teenagers can do very stupid things and technically only Chris & Peter did the stupid thing, but I might need a little bit of suspension of disbelief. Now that I read how well-known birth control was in the US during that time. I know it was a big thing in The Netherlands (where I’m from) but I wasn’t sure about the US.

I like to think werewolves would be pretty open about these things and Talia and John were definitely like; wrap it up. Deuc definitely bought Peter a whole box of condoms after they found out Chris and Noah were knocked up. ‘Just to be helpful’. 

Talia definitely talked to Chris and Noah about birth control more and educated Chris on sex and what’s going to happen now that he’s pregnant. I might actually include that in the story somewhere or in the prequel. I like to imagine that due to moving so much he never really got much education on everything and when he did he was probably tired from hunting and couldn’t focus much on school.

DUDE

I wanted to put Cards against Humanity in the story but the game doesn’t come out until May 2011, the story takes place in January XD

But yeah, game nights are definitely a thing, especially CAH, Monopoly, Life, Clue (Cluedo in Europe), Trivia Pursuit (Stiles, Lydia, and Noah rock that one), I actually don’t know Apples to Apples but it looks like fun and definitely something they might play!

During Monopoly, they have the general rule that no-one can flip the board and Allison is the bank. (she’s the fairest and most level headed during Monopoly.) Although that role is passed to Kira when she starts playing.

Noah wanders into the kitchen one morning to find Peter making breakfast and full-on rocking out to Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” in nothing but an ancient BH Sheriff’s Dept t-shirt and a pair of boxer briefs.

This is one image where I’m like, yeah, this is going into the story because it is awesome! I need it more than life itself. 

Also, I can see the three of them swapping clothes quite often too. Like Chris wears Noah’s BH Sheriff’s dept jacket or cap and Peter’s Stanford Hoodie, Peter wears Noah’s worn BH Sheriff’s dept t-shirt and Chris’s worn Metalica/Green Day sleeping shirts, Noah tends to wear Peter’s leather jackets and Chris’s sunglasses. (Because Chris’s shirts are a little too tight for him and his pants too short. He does occasionally steal those loose sleeping shorts from Chris)

Occasionally he’ll take Chris’s weird pens (from Argent Arms or places like BK that Chris collects) with him on patrol. His favorite Pen to steal is a pink feathery one while on late DUI patrols where he can write tickets with them. 

And dude the rickroll at the wedding is brilliant! I should have done that at my friend’s wedding.. damn.

But yeah Jackson would enlist Danny into helping them. Stiles still pitches Derek shirtless to use as leverage against Danny. (Which to me is extra funny because Derek is actually their cousin.) Derek is okay with it because he gets to extract revenge on Uncle Peter for that time where Uncle Peter gave him the talk by just throwing condoms at him.

At some point there’s just a rickroll VS Carameldanssen battle, it needs to happen XD

All of these stories are wonderful, honestly, they really made me smile and if I wasn’t this tired I would’ve shared some from my vet tech days too. Those days were wild man. But I do want you to know, I’ve read all of them and tell Rachel Ray she’s awesome and Julius Squeezer he’s a ball and I love him <3
