summary: when jacaerys finally meets the hidden bastard of corlys velaryon, he loses interests in his betrothed Baela and intends to make her aunt his, but are you really what your family has made you up to be?

“Will you not say goodbye to your father?” Corlys had not even an ounce of guilt in his eyes. You shook your head as a no, receiving his predictable sigh.

“Come here.” He pleads. You give in and walk into his arms. He held you like he’s about to lose you for good. I’m coming back, you wanted to tell him. But your pride won the best of you. “No matter what happens, or how much you’ve grown to hate or tire of me, you will always-’’ he leaned closer to your temple as he whispers, “-be my daughter.” I could never hate you. When you pulled away slightly, you notice how hies eyes stray from you towards the large ship, specifically towards Daemon and Rhaenyra.

He gives you one last look, a certain graveness in his face that is now devoid of his usual small smile. “Come back to me safely.” You nod in a promise, untangling your hand from his as you turn the awaiting Rhaena, smiling as brightly as the sun.

She gives you a thumbs up as you reach her. “Finally, you will have the best time in Dragonstone, I’ll make sure of it.” She crosses her arm with yours, climbing up the ship. You spare one last glance towards your father, now face to face with Rhaenyra, probably giving her some sort of ‘don’t get her killed speech’. “Grandsire acts like we’ll drown you the first chance we get once we reach home, it’s offending, truly.” You grinned at the younger girl, letting her rest her head on your shoulder for a minute before she jolts up again. She never was the one able to sit still.

“Baela, we have ourselves another woman on the ship!” Rhaena yells out to her sister who’s just arrived from behind the deck. “Auntie?” She asks sweetly, like she’s known you for ages. “I thought grandsire said no?” You winked at Baela who’s now by your left side.

“I made father ask again.” Rhaena grinned cheekily, earning a laugh from her sister. “And it worked? I thought father’s only good at pissing him off even more, that’s what Rhaenys said at least.” She only receives a shrug from the other girl, and so she dropped it.

“Well anyways, this is great, you know sometimes we’d get glimpses of fishes swimming, I’ve seen a dolpin once actually! We were 12, I think, Rhaena thought it was a mermaid.” A mute airy laugh escapes you at the information while Rhaena shoves Baela and tells her to shut up. “It’s always nice to sail around- unless you get seasick like Lucerys that is. Though I will have to warn you of a particular annoyance that’ll occur almost every minute once we’re off. It sounds a lot like this; ‘Oi! Get away from the edge, you could’ve fell you know? Oi! Stop breathing too hard at the water!’ “ Her accurate imitation of Jacaerys cracks a smile out of you as Rhaena decides to join in with her own imitations.

“ Oi! Mother said I’m in charge, that means no littering in the ship!” Baela turn her head to her side as she laughs hardly, hands clutching her chest. “ ‘How dare you disobey me, You’ll hear from mother!’ ” The three of you giggled to yourself, Rhaena already kneeling on the floor covering her face while you and Baela tried not to fall off the ship.

“Oi!” A familiar voice shouts suddenly, the sisters and you raise your heads to meet a confused Jacaerys standing before you.

You share a look with them and start to laugh again in his face. “Can you three at least stop leaning at the edge, we’re about to go.” His words are outrightly ignored as Baela points a finger at his face. “See, I told you.” She says to you, earning an incoherent lip movement from you. I know. You almost said. He’s about as identical as an annoying baby seal. You would know. Always yapping around.

“See what?” He asks desperately. The older girl just shook her head as she calmed down. “Nothing, see nothing.” She attempts to assure him, only deepening his frown. “I feel like you’re all ganging up againts me, which is insulting considering I’ve done nothing but-“

“- But be the most boring person in the whole world.” Rhaena completes his words, earning a glare. “I’m responsible, not boring.” The sisters groaned loudly at that and move to push him away towards another direction. “Hey! What’d I do?” You hear him ask as he’s being shoved away. “Go be a prissy prat somewhere else.” Baela responds. Your eyes wonder towards Daemon and Rhaenyra, further on your opposite, talking again in the same serious and boring old people manner. After fighting your own consciousness, you turn around to the sight of your home, and you let yourself risk crying in public as you search for your father at where he stood.

He was already walking away. I’m sorry. You should’ve said, even though you weren’t. I’ll miss you.

It was a long journey, or maybe it wasn’t, maybe you just hadn’t been in sea for a long time.

You notice how Rhaenyra stares at you from time to time as you spend most of your time looking out the sea and below it. It was not malicious, or scrutiny. It was the kind of look that made her seem like she was searching for something on you. And she wasn’t exactly shy about it either, only smiling whenever you looked back. Is it weird that you’re here? You finally ask yourself. You weren’t family, not really. But you felt like it with Rhaena and Baela. You felt them as your sisters, just like Laena was to you.

Another person whom you’ve noticed couldn’t keep his eyes from you was Jace.

In fact, you were sure the only thing stopping him from walking over and attempting a conversation was the girl by your side. Baela had went to sleep by a chair. You turn your head to the corner where Lucerys is huddled by, trying not to pass out after throwing up all afternoon. Giving a nudge at Rhaena, you cocked your head towards her betrothed. “Oh, at least he’s now throwing up anymore.” She says happily. You raise a brow. “Will you be fine alone?” She asks concerningly. You smile and mouthed to her ‘I’m not alone’, while beckoning to the ship crew and her family. She shares your smile and squeezes your hand before walking over to the boy, pulling him up slightly to help him.

How many seconds would he take? You ask yourself. 5,4,3,2- “Hello.” He’s leaning againts the ship on your left, stealing glances between you and the sea. “Hello.” You whisper, too low for him to hear, but he smiles and you wondered if he did hear it anyway.

“Are you having a good time?” He asks. You nod once, turning from the sea to his face. “Great.” He responds awkwardly. “That’s great…” You turn again towards the waters. After a moment’s silence, he speaks again; “Are you purposely not talking to me, because you don’t like me?” The bluntness in his tone almost makes you laugh. “Do not think yourself too greatly, Jacaerys. I do nothing for anyone else but myself.” You speak gently, a gift for his ears only. His grin, became only yours to see too. "My apologies then." His skin was reflecting the shine of the setting sun. Though you're not sure if it has anything to do with your fast beating heart every time his brown orbs shined from the light.

Neither of you had mentioned the other night. You wondered if he too stayed awake all night with the memory of how the other looked under the moon's glow. You flinched hard when your eyes caught sight of a moving creature under the deep blues. You hastened to look more closely, standing on your tiptoes now.

“What? What was it?” Jace asks worriedly, his hands immediately gripping your wrist in case you fall. The waves are empty as you remain watchful, until finally, It swims back up. Jacaerys himself leans closer to look when he hears you gasping loudly.

Your hands were quick to reach out from the far distance. As if you’re saying; Look! It came for me!

“It’s a seal- gods.” Jacaerys laughs in awe at the sight, watching as the sea creature swims closer before diving back into the deep waters. You grinned wildly at him, the joys you had felt was unspeakable. Did you see that? You wanted to ask him. Of course he did. He was there. He couldn’t understand why you were so happy to see it though. You haven’t been able to leave the confinements of your room in years, the sight of a seal had been enough to excite you. Of course it did.

The prince did not understand why you seemed to be so alive above the seas, but he needed you to look at him the way you just did for the rest of his life.

Your beauty is alien, not that you’re too different from other women, but the unearthly way you carry yourself with had sparked a hunger within him that he never realized was there to begin with. An emptiness he had been content with ignoring before, but now he’s sure there could be no other way to put it off but to satiate it. "Have you seen a seal before?" He inquires, in which you responded within eager nod. "Adorable aren't they? It's quite rare to catch sight of them this easy." You raised your brows and shrugged.

Could he live the rest of his life with that emptiness, or would he risk another glance on your way and move forward with the sealed fate that would come with it? He meets your gaze, and he realizes then, there was no choices left. His heart and mind have already decided since he first saw you. "You must've lured it here, with your voice." He teases, making you scoff and turn your head away. He would honestly believe that the animal had followed you blindly for your small laughs and whisper talks. For he had too.

The first thing you noticed once the ship reached the dock, was how isolated the Dragonstone castle actually is. You’ve read of the island of the Blackwaters and yet it’s sight still sent shivers down your spine. Somehow the singularity of the castle only made it seem bigger.

“It looks like a scale.” You muttered to yourself. “A dragon scale, most accurately.” The prince quipped at your side. You hadn’t notice that he was still next to you. He spares a grin for you despite his obvious tiredness. making you smile yourself. The two of you follow after the elders and the rest of the tired children down the ship. A mental note to hide your obvious awe of the building was made once you notice the glances sent to you by the others. “Beautiful, Isn’t it?” Daemon asks, twisting his neck to give you a glance as he kept walking. You nod in agreement. It is beautiful. “I hope you’ll make yourself comfortable here, dear.” Rhaenyra adds with a polite smile, that you easily returned with your own. You part from Jacaerys’ side hesitantly, pretending not to see him watching you take your leave and move towardsRhaena as she helps you to an empty chamber near hers.

“I know it seems quite lonely here, but there’s quite a lot we can still do.” She exclaims positively. “You told me that you liked to read before?” You nodded. “Well, our library is huge, larger than grandsire’s I’d say actually. Father likes to read as well, he’s much more studious than he looks like.” She explains with a grin. You raised a brow as if to ask, what’s more?

“Welll…” She dragged, tilting her head up as she tries to think of something. “Ah! Chess, it’s a board game we often play in the library, I could teach you later” She says surely. “The boys like to practice their sword fighting outside in the morning, It’s quite fun to pick a side and turn it into a fight.” You frowned in distaste. Humans had weird humor and taste in enjoyment. You lift your head to see around the stunning place. Were the walls made of real Valyrian stones? At least that was what you’ve heard.

The room you were given was bigger than expected. The walls were covered in pale colored florals and the bed seems untouched. You liked it. Though you wouldn’t admit, that the lengthy space was making you feel small, and though it’s too late now, you were starting to miss the comforting and secure feeling of your smaller room back in Driftmark. You notice the windows and leave your clothes to be fixed upon by servants called by Rhaena. Thing but long curtains were all that covered the empty square inside the walls by your bedside. Pulling aside the curtains, a fleeting sense of joy filled you when you saw how you’ve gotten a direct view of the sea. The water here seemed vastly different to the ones at home. They seemed more blue, and it circled around the castle too. If you hadn’t already gotten used to loneliness, the way this castle was caged would’ve scared you. “Are you alright?” Rhaena asks after the servants have left, fluffing out your pillow. You walk over to her with a smile as an answer. Her eyes were already red from tiredness, and the way she hunched told you that she needed a good sleep to go with after a bath. “If you need anything, you can call for the guards and servants. I’m also very near, so you can come to me too.” She briefed quickly.

The two of you exchanged cheek kisses before she leaves to her chambers, and you to your newfound freedom. You make haste to your warm bath that was prepared earlier. The warm water soothed the straining ache in your fingers when you dipped them in. The way you had gripped the edge of the ship, it wasn’t surprising to you that they hurt. You climb inside the tub after ridding yourself of your dirty clothes, letting it envelope your body. As your back finally hit the end of the tub and your feet on the opposite, you start to wonder when exactly had water began feeling so foreign to you. You were the ocean’s child, but has the distance you’ve been keeping from it, made you less of the sea? You remembered the night you went for a swim, risking your own identity when Jace had found you. Would you ever get the chance to be who you really are after this?

It seemed not, unless you’re willing to take the risk of losing everything.

You rinsed yourself off after 15 minutes of soaking in the water. Dressed up for bed, you didn’t feel like sleeping yet, so, you put on your frilly socks before opening your doors. The distant guarding men neither looked nor said anything to you as you kept walking as if you knew the way. You saw the staircase you assumed would lead to Rhaenyra and Daemon’s room. If he’s so keen of the library, then it must be placed close to him.

So you climbed up the large and lavish steps until you reached the top. Large sets of doors with a guard by it was by your right, most proabably their chambers. You turn to your left instead.It was a short distance when you reached a room without doors before them. Easily recognised by the fully shelved books in the space, you congratulate yourself before entering the library. Rhaena was right about one thing, it was bigger than the one back home. The smell of old books and melting candlelight fills your nostrils, putting you both at ease and in excitement. You look through every rack in one glance, recognizing some of the titles and picking up some that you haven’t. It was one of the first glorious finds in your freedom and it was delightful. You inspect a beautiful but oddly covered book entitled ‘Frogkisser’. It seemed to be a children’s book, though you wondered how true does the tale of princesses kissing frog to turn them into princes are.

Considering these same human have also thought selkies as a myth too.

Rising up from your crouching position after pushing the book back into it’s place, you let out a loud yelp your steps on something stiff. An answering ‘ouch’ told all that you needed to know. “Will you stop stalking me!” You whisper-yelled against your own refusal. His eyes widen and a scoff leaves him offendedly. “I’m not!” He’s standing awkwardly before you, hair mussed up and eyes droopy. Like a little fluffy dog. You gave him a pointed look and sighed. “Why are you here then?” He goes quiet. “Look, it’s late. Perhaps we can do a postmortem tomorrow? I’ll leave to my chambers.” You decided. “I’ll walk you.” He confidently says before catching up to you side.

You won’t tell it to his face, but you were almost glad that he was awake, and that he came to look for you. Being alone was what you made yourself get use to, for the sake of survival. That didn’t mean you had liked it. You don’t ask him why he was looking for you, and he doesn’t ask you why you can’t sleep. “Are you always this clingy?” You inquire. He shares a tired smile with you before answering; “Only with those I’ve come to admire.” A laugh strings out of your throat. Jacaerys beams. “Do you use that with every girl you meet?”

The distance to your room felt shorter than it did minutes ago as the both of you reach the doors. His hand brushes over yours. A short flicker you wished you didn’t feel, because now that’ll be all you think of until you fall asleep. “No. just you.” He responds softly. You feel yourself avoiding his attached gaze. At first it was anticipation, and intensity that burned by your chest. But one look at him, you’re reminded of his betrothal towards Baela, and your anticipation was replaced with shame. And what is he doing to himself too? Saying things and doing things he ought not to. “Be careful, squid hands. You should not place them where they don’t belong and your tongue where they are forbidden to speak of.” He is unfazed by your words, gaze dizzy as it remains on you. “I like you with your hair down.” He says suddenly. ‘Excuse me?”

“They look like a mess of waves, even in their neatest form. You are beautiful.” He had left you speechless. You were confused and mute, staring at him like he’s the craziest man on earth. “Perhaps you need to sleep.” You decided. “Yes, I do. I wish to take you on a tour of this castle tomorrow, so you better get some rest yourself.” He makes sure to cut you off before you could speak by turning around and walking away immediately.

Honest question- you're against proshippers, but you ship SidLink, and I'm confused? Link is 17 (canon fact) regardless of how long he was asleep, and Sidon has been actively living for 135 years. There is huge imbalance in so many ways and it's technically underage. Also proship is literally just not harassing people over fiction, you can hate tropes all you want. Would you block a proship that followed even if they didn't do anything but reblog art?

1. Yea im against proshippers.

2. In all of the art ive made with sidlink, and really ANY queer art I have made, I rarely draw anyone who is not over 18. My sidlink fancomic is set several years after the calamity, meaning that Link is well past 18 yrs old. So no, I dont draw him in any context where hes 17. An odd assumption to make that Sidon is like “grooming” him even tho Link knew him 100 years ago when he was a guppy. An odd assumption in general to assume art made by an adult to be playing into weird age/power dynamics really, just because there may be an age difference between two adult characters (who in my art, clearly consent to courting each other and who recognize each other as mutual beings deserving of respect). Do you want to go around to every other sidlink artist or fanfic writer now or what? Because there are genuine weirdos in the sidlink fandom, but of course you send me this message like some sort of “gotcha!”

3. I dont care what proship is to you, but I dont go around harrassing people to explain the art they make when they clearly depict adults, nor do I defend weird shit like extreme age dynamics (teen and adult, child and teen), nor do i defend media with problematic material that clearly has it just for the traumaporn or shock factor. I DO believe fiction affects reality because we have evidence from centuries of racism how written word and racist characters have affected our perceptions of BIPOC communities.

4. I would block a proship if I knew they were, but I have 20,000 followers and far too many notifications to check every blog that follows me. Ive been blocking porn bots for days and I dont care to check peoples blogs. I cant control if someone proship follows me, and I honestly cannot really care, but dont expect to feel welcomed on my blog because I refuse to align myself with a community that has 100% no media literacy skills. Are you proship and WANT to follow me??? Because it sounds like you are. Like dude feel free, i clearly cannot control you, but again, Im not proship and I have been against it for years now.

4. The fanfic you would recommend to somebody not in the fandom

That is a really good question. I wonder if that means someone that’s not watched the show or just someone that’s not in quite as deep? Hmm… for someone that’s not watch the show, maybe something where you don’t need to know canon to understand what’s going on? So an AU. But the characters are still similar to the ones we see in canon? Maybe something like play my song by @ishotforthestars or I love the way you lie by @iwouldnevergetintofanfic

In fact, I'm going to say those for someone who's watched the show but just isn't as obsessed as some of us 🫣

14. Your choice of fanfic for each season

Season as in weather or as in of the show? I'm going weather because I know what I'll answer for that one 😂

I’m going to cheat on this one and say Right Back Home To You by @thewaterloovases, it shows a snapshot of their lives through the years, one for each season. And it’s beautiful. It’s a sequel though, to You’re Still The One. But you should definitely read them both.

20. Your not Wilmon favourite ship couple

I don’t think I can give a straight (ha!) answer to this. Because watching the show: none of them. Buuuuuut in fanfic, if someone writes them a certain way, I would love any. So I’ve loved fics with Maddie/Rosh and Henry/Walter. But I think I’d say Maddie/Rosh wins out slightly, mostly because they haven’t met in canon so I don’t have that clouding my judgment. I think they’d hit it off and be really cute together.

I DON’T KNOW! I don’t think I can choose. I always assumed I’d be above tropes. I AM NOT.

Fake dating probably. But I love them all. Give me all the tropes.

37. The trope you didn’t expect to like

There was only one bed. I assumed I’d find it awkward and contrived every time. And I can’t think of a single time I’ve not loved it. I love proving myself wrong.

42. Do you like to comment on the fic you read

Yes!! It took me a while to pluck up the courage, and I now feel bad for all the wonderful fics I read before I did. But then I read your lovely comments and was inspired to do my own. And as a writer too, I know how much author's value them.

43. Does reading fanfic make you want to write

Yes! I had never written anything in my life until I discovered fanfic. I will be forever grateful that it exists. We have such wonderful authors in this fandom, and people with some many different writing styles, and who write such different stories with the wealth of content we have in canon. I'll read a fanfic and think 'I never thought to do that', and it makes me realise just how many stories we can tell.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

hmm i dont think hate is the right word. i think if anything, fandom 'flattened' how i saw some characters and i had to like sit with my interpretations in more or less a vacuum to figure them out when writing them. misaki and totsuka come to mind for obvious reasons bc they were so often only considered in the context of a ship and i've had to flesh them out in a way that make sense to me for a while. on the flipside, i couldn't stand the vast majority of the fanon takes on fushimi but he is SUCH a fun playground of a character in canon!

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

not unpopular as in disliked but more like overlooked - but i think more people should get obsessed with hidaka like me and then write me super niche hisaru fic!!!!! <3

it would be Really Nice if chiaki and i weren't pretty much carrying the mikoizu fandom on our backs :'))) but my running joke has always been that my relationship with that ship is their relationship with each other ie. IT'S ROTTEN WORK / NOT TO ME NOT IF IT'S THEM 😭

Gosh i hate the age discourse thats sprouted up in the OW community since canon ages got released. Especially the shipping discourse about Hoggie n I. Yeah, he’s 23 years older than me in source. Yeah, he was still 13ish years older than me in my timeline. But that doesnt make our relationship illegal!! I was twenty five in my timeline and i’m twenty seven in canon!! A grown ass man with a fully developed brain who can make rational decisions!! And me rational decision making brain says i want my Hoggie!!! The only person who can stop me on this endeavor is Roadhog himself!!

And on the topic of being a grown man with a developed brain, can fandom stop hypersexualizing and infantilizing me at the same time please?? Yeah, i’m autistic/adhd; yeah i am super coded that way in game. But I am still!! A fully functioning adult!! I am not a kid!! I don’t think like one, I don’t act like one. And its the same people who treat me like that who want to ship me with other people who are around my age and/or they draw me super slutty. N like, yeah, i get it. U got yr lil thing going on. U hate old ppl and dilfs.

Byler vs Destiel (Why I have hope for canon Byler after getting baited by Destiel)

Why compare Byler and Destiel at all?

So, the first thing you’re probably wondering about is why the heck I’m writing this meta in the first place. Stranger Things and Supernatural are wildly different shows, aren’t they? Well, yes, yes they are. However, there are some key similarities that I’ve noticed surrounding Destiel and Byler now that ST season 4 has come out and Byler has gotten big. I thought it would be interesting to explain my reasoning in continuing to hope for canon Byler despite having been thoroughly let down by Spn in regards to Destiel.

2. First things first: a quick rundown of Destiel.

If you’ve watched spn you can skip this part. I’m assuming most Bylers have not watched Spn because Stranger Things is a widely popular and acclaimed show while Spn is… well, let’s say more of a cult classic with a niche audience. Supernatural is a Monster of the Week show created by Eric Kripke, which originally began airing all the way back in 2005 (I was 2 yrs old.. gotdamn) and ran for 15 seasons total, ending in 2020. Destiel is the wildly popular ship of repressed bisexual monster hunter Dean Winchester and gay angel Castiel. If you were on Tumblr anytime around November 5th of 2020 you probably remember Spn fans freaking the hell out and filling everyone’s dash with memes, and you have probably received some sort of important news about world events in this delightful format.

This was a result of the airing of Season 15 Episode 18, aptly titled Despair, in which Cas confessed his love for Dean and then immediately fricken died, never again to be seen on screen. Many fans (myself included) were hopeful that Cas would come back in the finale and Dean would reciprocate the confession. That… did not happen. Instead Dean got impaled on a giant nail and died, without his love for Cas ever being confirmed. Without even his bisexuality ever being confirmed (despite bi Dean having been hinted at before Cas even joined the show). Fans were understandably upset about this.

3. Okay, so, what are these aforementioned similarities between Destiel and Byler?

There are some obvious ones, like Spn and ST both being monster shows, but mostly I’ve noticed some Dean & Mike parallels, Will & Cas parallels, and parallels in the ways the ship is perceived by fans. To be clear, I don't think these parallels are intentional on the part of the Duffers, but I think they're worth examining anyway. I’m going to start with Dean and Mike, because that’s where I feel some of the similarities are the strongest. In the interest of comparison, I’m going to look at this through the lens of bi Mike, although obviously gay Mike is a valid interpretation with a good amount of evidence as well (see the byler google slides). Some strong arguments for Destiel and Byler on the sides of Dean and Mike are their reactions when their best friends are in danger, missing, or dead/presumed dead.

Seeing some similarities? The deeply repressed bi character who only expresses how important their friend is to them when something terrible is happening or has happened? Also, frustratingly, when said friend is possessed or missing and can't hear them. (Yes, both Cas and Will have been possessed and then brought to their senses by a coded love confession from the other half of their respective ships…)

Beyond that, much of the speculation around Mike and Dean by fans comes from body language, specifically micro-expressions and lip-glances.

Mike and Dean are also the characters who are more widely perceived as straight by the general audience, with hints to their bisexuality (or possibly homosexuality in Mike’s case) being subtle enough that you only really catch them if you’re looking for it.

Let’s move on to Cas and Will. These are characters who are canonically gay (or bi maybe for Cas?? Idk they’re pretty unclear about it in the show! Most people say gay so I’m going with that for this post) and canonically in love with their best friends. These are the characters who are more obvious to the GA, and are often painted in a light of unrequited love. Their love is also shown in a more narrative way, mostly through intentional writing choices rather than through body language and things that could be chalked up to acting choices. Cas’s love for Dean comes through very clearly in his character arcs, as he betrays heaven for him (multiple times) and allies with their enemies in an attempt to protect him (multiple times) and sacrifices himself for him (multiple times).

Will’s character arc in season 4 is pretty much entirely about his feelings for Mike, and specifically him, you could say, sacrificing his feelings for Mike in order to make Mike happy by keeping him and El together.

The natural conclusion that you would come to for the narrative arcs of both of these characters, suffering in supposed unrequited love, is a resolution in which their love is returned. However, this didn’t happen in Supernatural. So why do I think it will happen in Stranger Things?

Looking at all of these similarities felt disheartening to me at first. I only got into the Byler after the end of season 4, and I was almost immediately struck by how familiar the situation felt to me. It was incredibly reminiscent of being a Supernatural fan during the airing of Season 15: reading meta after meta filled with evidence for a Destiel endgame, everyone hyped up and so convinced it would go canon, people jokingly calling themselves delusional for expecting the natural resolution of a story-line that had been dangled in front of them for eleven long seasons. But I have a lot of faith in Byler, even after being let down by the Spn finale, and here’s why.

4. Main character Will Byers vs fan favorite Castiel

Are you ready for even more supernatural lore? Again, you can just skim this if you’ve watched spn. The character of Castiel is introduced in Supernatural Season 4 Episode 1: Lazarus Rising. Funny thing about Cas—he was only supposed to be on the show for like three episodes! Cas’s story-line was actually supposed to go to another angel character, Anna. Due to some actor drama or something Cas replaced Anna and got her story-line. And fans LOVED Cas, so much so that when they tried to permanently kill him off in Season 7, ratings dropped so low that they decided to bring him back. The interesting thing about Cas and Destiel is that it was pretty much all accidental, at least at first. It was much less about genuine writing choices, and much more about insane actor chemistry and casual ship-baiting by the writers. Destiel was a ship that started off without much canon basis, but over the next eleven seasons became more and more textually supported until the writers had pretty much no choice except to address it. This was due to a lot of things: changing show-runners, changing writers, and the actors themselves becoming more open to the possibility of the ship. However, despite the wild popularity of Cas and Destiel, Cas never gained the true main character status of Dean and Sam (Dean’s brother). While Dean and Sam both appear in almost every episode of Spn, Cas disappears for episodes at a time and often only appears for the particularly plotty sections. While I think the changing writers and show-runners allowed for Cas to become more valued in later seasons, his character often gets sidelined in favor of the brothers.

So, let’s now contrast this with Will Byers. Will is definitely one of the main characters of Stranger Things—his disappearance is the inciting incident of the series, and his possession is one of the biggest plot points of season two. While he has been less central to seasons three and four, there is always time devoted in the show to his character, and for the past two seasons his arc has mainly dealt with him struggling as a closeted gay teenager in the 80’s, and him feeling sidelined by Mike with his relationship with El. Unlike Castiel, Will was always meant to be a main character, possibly the main character when you consider that the Duffers originally planned to kill El in the season 1 finale. Will being gay was also planned from the beginning, with hints going all the way back to the first episode. Stranger Things is also known for including a lot of foreshadowing, references, and parallels for watchful viewers to pick up on and analyze. Nothing about Will’s character is accidental, and that gives me hope that he will have a satisfying conclusion to his character arc. Which leads me to my second point—

5. Stranger Things is a really good show. Supernatural… is a mixed bag

To be honest, Supernatural is a mess of a show. It changed show-runners like every four seasons, the writers got switched out a lot and the quality of the writing varies drastically between episodes, plot points were recycled, narrative and character arcs were abandoned, everyone dies and comes back to life multiple times, half of it is shitty filler, and like twice a season there’s an episode so incredibly good it keeps you coming back for more. In short: Supernatural is made for TV. Now, I don’t want to get into my personal vendetta against long-running network television shows, but basically I think that having to crank out a new episode of a show every week for years reduces the quality of that show drastically. Things work best when they have a clear beginning and ending, and they know how they’re going to progress from point A to point B. Not to get off topic, but this is why I absolutely love the Mike Flanagan Netflix shows (Hill House, Bly Manor, Midnight Mass), and why I’m actually glad that Hannibal was forced to wrap up in three seasons. The longer a show is, the more chances it has to fuck up the characters and the plot progression. Stranger Things is right in that sweet spot—I think that it will tell exactly the story it wants to tell, no more and no less. Stranger Things is generally a much higher quality show than Supernatural, and I trust it much more to properly handle its characters and relationships. Supernatural, in my opinion at least, made a massive mistake in killing all the main characters in the finale when all of them had pretty much spent 15 seasons suffering and struggling to survive. The only satisfying conclusion to those characters would have been to see them finally allowed to be happy and peaceful and together, regardless of Destiel. I seriously doubt that the Duffers would ever make this mistake, especially as they have already stated that they’re not Game of Thrones and don’t intend to go grimdark and kill all their main characters. I think that Stranger Things intends to give the characters (and audience) what they want—I think at the end of the day the ST kids will all end up happy and safe. And the way they have set this up, there really isn’t a lot of opportunity for happiness for Will without Byler.

My S5 endgame predictions are pretty much: Byler happens, Max wakes up and Lumax get to go on their theater date, El breaks up with Mike and gets to spend more time with Max (the happiest we’ve seen her is with Max), and Dustin has a big brother little brother moment with Steve that will make me cry (I know people think Steve will die in S5 but honestly I think after Eddie there’s no way they would kill Dustin’s big brother figure TWICE, that would be too cruel to his character). I think Stranger Things wants these characters to end up happy, and I trust them to fulfill the narratives that they’ve been building since season one. Will and El as characters have suffered so much, and I don’t think that they will end up in the same crappy patterns they’ve been repeating for seasons now when those patterns obviously need to be broken in order for them to be happy.

In conclusion: despite the similarities I see between Destiel and Byler, I’m pretty confident that Byler is endgame and will succeed where Destiel (and Spn as a whole) failed, because ST is a well-thought out, high quality show, and Spn was a dearly beloved mess. This is my first time writing meta, so I’m sorry if anything is confusing! I’m also admittedly not the best at media analysis (it did take me four seasons to pick up on Byler), so if any of my fellow Byler scholars would like to chime in and interpret these findings further, that would be very welcome! if you ship tim and sylvia (19 and 16/17) than you don't get to fucking talk about age gaps or ageing charecters up. No matter what a 16 or 17 yr old shouldn't be dating a 19 yr old.

On the other hand people who are 20/23 who have know each other since they were 16/19 is fine, that's normal. If they liked each other since they were young and waited until it was fine, or if they only started liking each other when they were adults! As long as everyone is able to consent the relationship is fine

I am at the point in my tumblr career where bashing what people ship is simply ridiculous considering I APPARENTLY ship one of the most problematic relationships in the fandom. But we have to realize any/all of our ships are questionable for any reason. Johnny and Pony are questionable because 16/14 except Johnny thinks Pony is 13 years old canonically so 😭. Apparently aging up steveboy 14/17 is problematic bc that means “we saw chemistry there in the first place,” which isn’t true, we just think pony always had a crush on him and it’d be interesting character work to try to discover how that could possibly fit in some distant future. And then there’s Tally, where they beat tf out of each other and slash expensive tires for sillies even tho they’re all poor. And now there’s all these heterosexual shippings, in which my biggest qualm is that we’re being run by the heterosexuals. But I do acknowledge that claiming Tim is too “grown” for Johnny and then shipping him with a girl who most likely would be around his age is strange. ONLY if you’re trying to make other people feel bad for it. Like I don’t see how we can’t realize we all ship crack shipping, these are all rare pairs other than Jally probably. So like we ALL have to pull a few canon strings to make it make sense that these characters would even talk to each other much less make out. It’s not a big deal unless you’re using fictional people to live out your own weird fantasies. I can acknowledge there’s plenty strange steveboy and dallyboy fanfic. But I’ve seen strange EVERYTHING fanfic. People are weirdos and some aren’t. It’s THAT simple. Not everything has to be a thinkpiece to incite drama. Why would you want clout from a fandom that only has 4 people active at all times?

when I say that Will being canonically gay in stranger things is the biggest proof we need for byler it’s not simply because we know he is gay and that’s it - there is context that comes from being in fandoms for something like 12 yrs or more.

first of all, I’ve started watching ST because of people talking about will and byler on twitter (in july), as a person who barely knew anything about it (I didn’t even know mike and el were a couple, so I was super surprised they decided to make it romantic in s1 when I didn’t really feel like it would happen).

i was a sherlock fan who shipped sherlock/john. i’ve shipped non-canon couples for a long time (fandom spaces are queer spaces a lot of times). i know what it feels like to read things from a text that could imply things - a text that could be queercoded, depending on interpretation. i know what it feels like to have fun with fanon and ship things that are potentially there, but not textually canon (like steddie or ronance, imo). it’s fun and it’s mostly harmless, until the writers decide to use it as queerbait to make their fandom stay with them for a long time because they’re rooting for their queer ship (i think supernatural is the worst example of this, as they confirmed the one-sided love and then killed the queer character and sent him to hell LMAOOO). those are milking the fandoms, knowing the strongest core of a fandom is the hardcore ones (many queers) and not the casual public.

i’m a big fan of hannibal, yuuri!! on ice and she-ra, three shows that are mostly queercoded until they aren’t (and they confirm the queer ship to be canon). i swear, people CAN tell. you can see when there is a creator and writer and team who truly wants to tell a queer story/relationship, even when they can’t show it openly (like hannibal or yoi). as a person of the community myself, i’ve been able to tell it was canon. it’s different from fans just shipping things, or queerbaiting, there is care and intention and writing and parallels and romantic framing and so many things that make you see that it is there.

(now, for byler i hope it’s different. every straight couple in ST has at least one kiss and i think byler HAS to have at least one (dramatic, passionate, show-stopping) kiss because it would be totally unfair if they don’t. they have to be totally and utterly canon)

what is different about byler and stranger things, compared to sherlock or other shows for the straights?

it’s will being canonically gay. bbc sherlock would never do that. bbc sherlock would mock feelings. he would laugh about love. he would probably be even a bit homophobic, just for the sake of it.

and it’s not just will being canonically gay, it’s his love for mike being canon. i’m sure other people have said it, but will’s love for mike is NOT JUST A CRUSH. it’s not ridiculed. sure, it’s used to forward a straight ship (that is sinking), but the story is not finished yet and i want to believe that byler is endgame and the writing in s4 was meant to 1) leave things uncomplete and unseattled between mike and will, between lies and non-confessed feelings; and will being in the middle of a relationship that is sinking. 2) mike responding to will’s feelings of love and to no one else, not even el begging for him to say he loves her. 3) making EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHERS feel sorry for will. cry for will. pity will. root for will. root for GAY WILL. (people who think he is straight and he loves el don’t count, those are morons)

will’s love for mike is LOVE in capital letters. it is not a crush. it’s never treated as something to laugh about, or something like a one-sided crush like Dustin’s crush for Max or Steve’s crush for Robin, those feelings are clearly more superficial and you can see that they’re not gonna happen from miles away. will’s love is A LOVE THAT MOVES MOUNTAINS. it’s totally romantic. deeply rooted. it’s like those loves you can see between jancy or lumax or even more jopper in s4, a love that saves one another, that makes people do crazy things, a love that is inherently part of the character, that makes them FEEL and DO and LIVE and you can’t imagine them not being in love with that person.

these writers know how to write that type of love. each canon ship they made (even s1/2 milkvan in some ways), i’ve loved it. they know what they’re doing, how to make it feel like it’s true love even without writing grand love confessions or making them kiss every other episode. it’s in THE NARRATIVE, the things the characters do and say and imply.

and even more, about byler... something i wrote in a fic i’ll never finish but imo it’s the biggest point we can take away from will’s love and confession in s4. WILL SEES MIKE. will sees mike for who he is and loves him anyways. he sees the best and worst in him and still loves him and knows him and grounds him to reality and tells Mike how he could be the best version of himself, pushing him to fight for it (you are the heart). will’s love is ancient and deep, it’s a love that we don’t even know when it started, it’s always been there, it’s always been part of will (and part of mike, because it IS MUTUAL). it’s like breathing. like the sun every morning, it’s just there. it’s not going away. it’s not even a choice, at this point, there is an helplessness in the love will feels - it’s too big and too much for him he would love to run away from it, but still he can’t deny his heart.

and that’s why i think byler is endgame. because will is canonically gay, and he is in love, and no one is making fun of him for that. his love for mike is serious, profound, romantic, genuine. it makes you cry and root for him. it’s LOVE. the strongest of forces. and every byler scene is made with care. it’s never taken lightly, not even their fights, they always matter. there is no mocking in there. no sneer. it’s treated genuinely. almost like the creators are telling you: “look here, look at them, it matters. it matters to them and it should matter to you. there is something serious brewing here, and it is romantic love”

the semi-popular fanon of people who ship him with other characters is still usually having him as a dom top, cold ruthless boundary crossing dubcon dabi whump. other characters? idk i dont read or surround myself with anything else but obviously shigahaul would be a bit different and obvs this also changes whether or not he has his arms or not, which brings me to naganthaul where it's people's fantasy strong woman (mirko kind of gets this too) and the broken traumatized husk of a ''bad problematic character'' that some ppl feel like means her calling him a faggot is good and cool, and im kind of glad it's quieted down with that pairing.

i used to be way more up-to-date and in the culture of shipping/bnha/fic stuff and probably better equipped to answer this question but its been like, idk 4 years or something now into bnha and dabihaul and overhaul like...... which interpretation of him do you want lol. we've got like so many interations of aus and the canon compliant aus like the things rattling around in his little pink brain and what i think makes him tick and how.......

added tipping to my fic posts and this blog bc i have a 5 digit medial bill i will be paying off for the next 5 yrs and I'd like to not make it last 5 years. maybe 4. even better if it could be in 2.

no, I haven't fully decided on if I'm going to do writing commissions. the answer is currently no, because it takes a lot of time and energy and character research because I'm a perfectionist when it comes to canon character voices

that said, i do plan on doing tarot readings again, so maybe i can have some fun incorporating that into a writing comm fic-like thing for the self ship community. But not right now. I just don't have the momentum to keep up with anything

COTL : Planning on Making my Own COTL AU Very Soon(In Celebration of TROTOF DLC Update coming soon hopefully this Month or April) OCs Included(Sketch Drawings Only)

Hello Fellow Cultists, Well i've been pretty M.I.A for a while, so im not dead and am really excited for The Upcoming Major Update for COTL titled Relics of The Old Faith(with 4 Brand New Structures Coming in it aswell!) and I've been also seeing inspo on Tumblr by searching for cotl AUs and some of them are Amazing & Even Interesting with The Lore of This Game's Characters, Including NPCs aswell! so I've have decided to Plan my own Cult of The Lamb AU(It's Nameless for now) but The Plot is Simply a Epilogue or Possible Prediction for ROTOF's Postgame Story(What If The Bishops can be Resurrected, Reborn as Smol Followers like Narinder has and with Lamberina(My Lambsona OC who's introduce soon) along with Her Faithful & Loyal Followers try their best to Help Nari & His Sibs get along by doing Family Therapy and with Lamberina struggling to Reform each Smol Bishop(or Baby Bishops in this Case) along with Meeting New Friends and Discovering New Locations along her Journey.

This Will Feature Followers in my Own Cult(I have Currently Created 2 Completed Saves both Spared Narinder) and will even have my iwn OCs and Maybe Bring Back Ratuu as a Bonus. But For Now I'll do some Refs for Each Character(And Insert my Good Friends from Discord into the background as Cameos or Easter Eggs, Maybe even Family Members)

As for The Ships that will be involved, Obviously Narilamb will be in this only difference is Lamberina is a Sweet & Sour Lamb(don't mess with her when she's angry or messing with her Sweet Nari or Other Spouses) Next to That will be SozoxHelob(Better Ship than Sozolamb and Makes Sense that their both Insects) and Finally There will be a Bishop x Follower OC Ship in this mainly Leshy x OC type ship(cuz after playing each save, i noticed out of all the bishops Leshy goes easy on you, hence why he's the youngest and he's a pacifist i.e doesn't cause any plagues on your cult like famine or illness/plague sickness to any of your followers or even makes your loyal followers fight against you. he's such a sweet pacifist bush boy i love him) so of course any follower in lamb's cult would easily befriend him possibly even one of the reformed bosses like Barbatos or his Henchman Amduias even.

And There will be a Bonus Part to Revive Ratuu(Since he deserves better and even M.M/COTL's Official Twitter made it Canon that the Knucklebones gang doesn't matter for ratuu vesseling the red crown they love him no matter what he does! which is super sweet and wholesome to me) with Red Shady Fox Included.

This is pretty much my 1st big COTL Based Project Im doing in countdown to the update(in celebration of the Game's 1 yr anniversary this August! but that's later down the line) and maybe i will use this AU as a Main Blog Post if i stop my Journal Diaries of my Saves In-Game.
