⟡ To be honest, I am not sure what I can say about Kihyun's artistry that isn't abundantly clear from his studio and live performances. If I say that I believe he is one of the most competent vocalists in the genre, it may sound like an understatement — although it is not something I say lightly, and I mean it with my whole heart. His level of musicality is built on a strong foundation of fundamental skills and would not be possible without it. Minhyuk once described him as a stone that does not shake in the wind, and to me this also embodies his steadiness and reliability in the recording booth and on the stage no matter how challenging the primary and secondary (e.g., ad lib) lines are asked of him and no matter how deep they are into a rigorous concert set. Kihyun excels at singing high and singing loud (genuinely), but he also has a wide and well-supported range, and I appreciate the opportunities to enjoy his lower/mid end and lighter moments just as much as his robust belting. I understand why Hyungwon loves composing for his voice (who wouldn't?). Kihyun has been a strong singer since the beginning of his career and makes many of his parts seem effortless, yet most of all I respect his commitment to growth despite how much effort it takes to improve when you are already among the best of the best. He was honest with himself about when he felt his abilities plateauing, and he sought a way forward by resuming vocal lessons. We are fortunate as fans that he is also open enough to share that with us. I didn't think I could love and respect him more, but for that personal strength and dedication to his craft, I did. I do.

Postscript, to listeners. This was a challenging set of excerpts to compile (and even more to order) because Kihyun has many, many parts throughout the MX discography that showcase his abilities. As with my other compilations, it strives to capture a breadth of his output while also being very much biased toward my own favorites (Crescendo/Lost in the Dream/AND occur successively because they carry the most gut-punching, emotional weight to me). But I expect to revisit these in the future and would love to hear about your favorite moments in the tags. ♡

Postscript, to Kihyun. I miss you. Kpop is not the same without you. At the same time, I am so proud and happy for you that you are continuing to make music, as it is such a core part of your being and (if it is not presumptuous to say) brings you fulfillment and joy. I am absolutely tickled that you play the trombone. I hope you are having the best possible time playing in the band (and that your low brass section is delightfully weird, as tends to be the case — with lots of love to low brass players, from a percussionist who overheard all your shenanigans), and I can't wait to see how this musical experience contributes to your transformation and growth as an artist.

Misti Tope is the current head principal of Classen School of Advanced Studies at North East High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Misti Tope has been fostering an environment of fear & hostility among everyone including students, faculty, educators & parents. It is to the point where parents are organizing private meetups to discuss her. Students are creating petitions.

Misti Tope has recently stated multiple times to students & faculty that she wants to create an educational environment that aligns with Ryan Walters views.

Misti Tope has been firing teachers of color & working to force them out. Misti Tope recently fired a trans teacher, Mx Mustain, who was close to receiving tenure. Misti Tope, of course, lied about the reason behind these firings.

Misti Tope has threatened female students who wanted to report predatory behavior from faculty. She went so far as to make threatening phone calls & disbanded an after school club over these students compiling information. Misti Tope has threatened to disband any club that seeks to protect themselves from predatory teachers.

Misti Tope physically gropes students over dress code violations. Whether they are violating dress code or not, this is unexcusable. Misti Tope also makes derogatory commentary on female students being "busty" & "curvy".

Misti Tope actively intimidates the female student body. There have been situations where male students have shown their penises to female students & all the male students receive is detention. Misti Tope has called female students "overemotional" & "dramatic".

Misti Tope keeps seeking ways to disband the Black Student Union. Misti Tope has vocally compared black students in BSU more than once to rats & roaches pulling at each other's weaves. Misti Tope also stated that black students are equivalent to goldfish & don't deserve an education because they are incapable of retaining information.

Misti Tope is an active Holocaust denier. The son of a Holocaust survivor was kicked off stage while giving a presentation. Misti Tope shuts conversations surrounding the Holocaust.

Misti Tope's son who is a student is known to carve & graffiti swastikas & other Nazi imagery all over the school. Misti Tope's son also states antisemitic, homophobic, transphobic & racist rhetoric. Misti Tope scapegoats by saying he learns this from anime, which is untrue. Misti Tope also allows her son to skip classes & wander around the school.

Misti Tope attempts to force transgender students to use restrooms of their biological gender. Misti Tope has told transgender students to dress according to their biological gender.

Misti Tope is seeking to end funding to the athletic departments & divert funds to a swim team.

Misti Tope is not the future of Classen. Misti Tope is unfit to be a part of any school district in any capacity.

Again, I am not the only parent. Other parents are organizing & mobilizing of their own accord & having meetups. The same is being said of students. I have added screenshots because the admins of the Classen Parent group like deleting posts as evidence when things become heated.

Students, though this action was not right, cornered Misti Tope in her office this Friday (05/03/24). This is how threatened they feel by Misti Tope, this is the environment she's creating.

Today is Juneteenth, the anniversary of the announcement of federal emancipation of enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. It is often considered the freeing of the last enslaved people, but it is important to mention that in the US, slavery still legally exists in our prison system with the 13th Ammendment.

In honor of Juneteenth, and protests against police brutality (which specifically targets Black people), I have donated the entirety of my tax return totaling $889 (rounded to $900) to a variety of Black-led organizations and individuals. I am asking the Quixol community to join me, by collectively matching my donation. Meaning, that we would like to collectively double that $900 to raise $1,800. There are over 200 members in our Discord server, so if everybody were to donate $10, we could easily surpass that. We ask that you donate directly to a cause or an individual, and send your donation receipt to a staff member. I am glad that Quixol is a place we can be vocal about racial justice, but we can, and we MUST do better. All of us. We must uplift and celebrate the lives of all Black people in our communities, and we must be actively anti-racist. We must have the hard conversations with our friends and families and here in Quixol. As a non-Black person of color, my experiences with racism are incomparable to the injustices faced by Black people here in the US and globally. While I speak mainly about the US, this is a global issue. To quote Jasmine Richards, who has run the Black Lives Matter chapter in my area since 2015, (#BLMDENA) “this is a movement, not a moment.” To encourage sustained support, Quixol will be continuing these donations monthly.

I’ve included a list of resources and places to donate but I also encourage you to do your own research. This is a limited list. I welcome you to share with us any places or individuals you would also like to uplift. I have specifically found organizations and groups that are specifically Black-led, or are vocally intersectional for BIPOC with Black people in leadership roles.

I’d also like to point out that many of the links I include often include reclaimed slurs in their titles, or in click-thru links. If it is a word that I, Mara, can reclaim, I have not censored it, though some may have had to be abbreviated for Tumblr’s content rules. Personally I feel that the work being shared is too important to exclude, even if it is typically against Quixol rules. However, I have also made it a point not to share links with graphic images or videos that show violence against Black people. There is no need to share or spread those images, and doing so causes more harm. I have tried to limit any written descriptions of violence, and provide as much warning as possible.

Okay y’all, here’s my top kpop songs of 2020 list for this year (finally, good lord this year felt like an eternity). These are the 20 songs that I felt really made an impact on me this year and why 💕

Starting from last to first, here we go!

20. Dr. Bebe, Pentagon - this song deserved so much better tbh the music video was everything, their acting was excellent and the vocals were *chefs kiss* i also loved the dark, creepy vixx -reminiscent vibes

19. Back Door, Stray Kids - Ok like objectively i know that God’s Menu was like their piece de resistance this year, but Back Door was just so fun and had a great bass line and the choreo was SO good

18. Cry For Me, Twice - this literally JUST came out like two seconds ago but let me tell you cry for me has legit been stuck in my head from the SECOND i heard it just ask my sister she’s this close to killing me next time i sing the chorus

17. Red Sun, Dreamcatcher - Let’s be real, dreamcatcher’s entire studio album was perfect from start to finish, and red sun was a standout among that perfection for me like from the magical mystical instrumental to dami’s absolutely earth-shattering rap line, just absolute gold my dude

16. Kick It, NCT 127 - This was a very polarizing song for a lot of people i feel, but for me the concept was literally executed to perfection. It had so much potential to be cheesy and gimmicky, but it totally wasn’t and i think it’s because nct 127 committed SO wholeheartedly to the concept

15. So Bad, StayC - THIS song. I actually already had my list all written out when i discovered so bad by stayc and i literally had to reconsider my ENTIRE existence. They are so so good with such a talented production team backing them and they’ve literally just debuted.

14. Dun Dun, Everglow - A lot of people really hated this song, and don’t get me wrong i had my own issues with the line and screen time distribution for sure, but you can’t deny it’s a total banger

13. Nonstop, Oh My Girl - This is the kind of song that i never really expected to fall in love with. It’s bubbly and cute and quite like youthful, but oh my girl honestly pull that concept off so well and they had me immediately hypnotized

12. Be In Love, Itzy - 2020 was the year of bailey eating her own words aka the year of me falling in love with itzy. when itzy debuted i seriously thought if they stuck with their concept i probably wouldn’t ever be into their music but lmao. they showed me. anyway this b side is seriously underrated and it really shows the girls vocal talents off, especially lia and yuna

11. Love Killa, Monsta X - hyungwon. that’s it that’s the post . . . jk but for real, visuals popped off. love killa was exactly what i’ve been wanting from mx for the past year or so. they hit the nail right on the head with the this one.

10. Secret Story of the Swan, izone - my relationship with izone is basically like my relationship with itzy part 2. I always appreciated them for their talents and having a very recognizeable sound but i could never get into their music. then SSOTS happened, and to be honest it STILL gets stuck in my head at random times

9. Phobia, Stray Kids - i LOVE this b side. for a while i thought it might replace Voices as my favourite skz track, but it just didn’t have the longevity that voices does. that said, it’s still such a good song with an important message did i mention that i love stray kids

8. La Di Da, Everglow - i have said it before and i’ll say it again: no one is doing it like everglow. this song came so out of the blue and blindsided so many people with how unexpectedly different it was, all while being a certified banger. the line distribution is aMAZING, you get to hear each member’s unique flavor, the straight 80’s vibe is immaculate, the styling is God-tier, just . . . everything. i LOVE this comeback

7. Eternally, TXT - if you know me, you know i love a good beat switch-up (i mean, my ult group is stray kids for crying out loud) and ladies. this song is the switch up to end all switch ups. txt somehow managed to combine two completely different tracks, each of which would have been A+ songs all on their own, and somehow make something a million times better. listening to eternally is a whole experience in and of itself and i haven’t heard anything that could compare to it to this day

6. Girls, Nature - UGH. WHAT an underappreciated masterpiece. girls by nature does everything that other companies are so afraid to do with their girl groups: a strictly dark, horror concept, a haunting melodic line with no need for a rap breakdown because it stands on its own as is, a visual concept that does not sexualize the girls in any way but instead tells a story of a person at the mercy of the one they love. it’s e v e r y t h i n g. Not to mention the song has one of the best pre choruses i’ve EVER heard.

5. Wannabe, Itzy - Let’s be honest, you knew this was going to be here. Everyone and their grandma was learning ryujins shoulder move. this was literally the summer of itzy’s wannabe. This is actually the comeback that got me onboard the itzy train and now i’m barreling down the mountain going 200mph and can’t find the breaks

4. I Can’t Stop Me, Twice - I think onces really had no idea where this comeback was gonna go. after more and more got such mixed responses from fans, we all weren’t really sure what direction the company was going to take twice in next. personally, i’m SO happy they went for the retro synth 80’s vibe concept. it was current enough to fish in non fans and keep new onces engaged but they also added their own unique twice spice to it, and i’ve been playing it on repeat for weeks also stan risky risky wiggy wiggi

3. Oh My God, G Idle - Ahhhh, yes. another polarizing song from gidle. omg for me was exactly what i needed from gidle. They’d been playing around with the darker concepts but had never fully committed to the potential that i saw in their music, but with omg we finally got the see them go full out with it, and i don’t think ANYONE could have done it better. The drop while empty was somehow so satisfying, the visials in the mv were visceral and witchy and to think that soyeon wrote and produced such a masterpiece. all i can say is bravo

2. Daisy, Pentagon - if this song doesn’t hold a very special place in your universe heart then buddy i think it’s time to throw the whole heart away. daisy, on top of being the first song to earn pentagon a well deserved music show win, was so emotionally moving from the lyrics to the mv to the choreo. you don’t need to know korean to feel exactly what the writer is feeling when hui sings that chorus, and that my friend is true artistry.

1. Answer, Ateez - Bet you were expecting a stray kids song. answer though has had my whole entire heart body and soul from the second it came out all the way back in january. for it to last a whole year as my favourite song of 2020 really speaks volumes as to how incredibly talented ateez and their production team are. Over the course of this absolute shit year, this song really inspired me to push forward, to keep working toward my goals and to keep believing in myself, and i think that’s a pretty amazing feat for one single song.

While contemplating what a feat it will be to pare down all my favorite Changkyun musical moments in his eventual full (rap + vocal) compilation, I decided to console myself with a separate post dedicated to his vocal (melodic) introductions in songs. In other words, any time he is the first main voice heard, and he is singing rather than rapping. To the best of my knowledge, this is every MX song that met those parameters to me. I didn’t expect it to be 19 songs, and I didn’t expect this to be over 6 minutes long (although I did consciously make the choice to include the entire instrumental beginnings).

I will save the full ramble rant reflection for that future, full compilation, but I just have to say here (as if it is not obvious every time the #wings bari agenda possesses my keyboard) that I LOVE his vocal timbre. His is actually the voice in mx most likely and with little effort to make me want to swallow a bucket of glass or eat a wall. Changkyun may not be a “main vocalist” by the kpop genre’s standards and preferences, but he is my beloved gentle baritone, he is irreplaceable, he is one of a kind.

(No one asked, but my absolute favorites from this list are Beautiful Liar, all the ones from Shape of Love, If with U, One Day... Blow Your Mind... ok it's hard to pick favorites beyond that because I love them all.)

• also him participating in the polished man campaign raising awareness for child sexual violence. you can see that he is a very supportive and inclusive person, and even if there was a chance he was straight himself (which is minimal tbh) he’d still be a supporter. 

• his most iconic look up to date  no hetero man is this stylish by himself and if you don’t think so you can keep lying to yourself 

• in the beautiful era mnet meet and greet they had to act in pairs, wonho was paired with changkyun in a romantic scene and looked like he fell in love when changkyun grabbed his face [ timestamp: starting 40:55/ find here ]

• during mxray season 2 in the drama acting episode it’s a gay gold mine, first of all saying that changkyun is a guy with gorgeous lips, mentioning stuff abt kihyun’s lips too, falling in love with girl hyungwon and saying he wants to be lovers with her - watch it [ here ] and here are some screencaps | gifsets highlighting what happened (worth mentioning: changkyun & minhyuk’s gay moments there too, forming the chaotic trinity of monsta x)

• in a pretty old post i’ve made  asking lgbt monbebes to tell me their bias, roughly 1/3 of the ones who reblogged either put wonho as their bias or pointed out that he is the highest possibility of a non-straight member, (some cases, along with minhyuk*/and changkyun), with a rough difference of 57 answers from the other members. you can argue that it’s because of his popularity, but second came changkyun, and it is very likely for lgbt fans to pick the one they identify with the most as their bias 

• speed round → taking every chance he has to mention male monbebes, or just overall being a gender inclusive king who gives no fuck: 

• shows a lot of love to male fans, always blowing them kisses (happened on after school club multiple times) and saying he loves them

• was extremely excited when he read a comment on a vlive calling him “wonho hyung”

• he was asked about a group’s performance but all he kept saying is that they’re really handsome

• says that he enjoys wiping the sweat off his members

• “headband is not only for girls, no difference for gender, so i can wear it” + calling shownu the most beautiful and saying “beautiful isn’t for girls only” ( also, the members kept calling wonho beautiful in the same vlive the headband thing happened, which you can find here )

• when members were asked about their ideal type, he said someone that can cook ramen well, and proceeded to tell that gender doesn’t matter as long as you can cook ramen [ here ]

• i couldn’t find a video but during kcon mexico when speaking about monbebes he said “everybody my girl my boy” ft. changkyun who said “beauties and handsome guys, please be quiet” [ here’s a gifset that shows the points i mentioned before + this one ] 

• read a comment about monbebes becoming female characters from internet novels on their "love story" with monsta x and he said "i bet there's also male characters since there's also male fans!” [ here ] 

• him getting scared at everything which you may think is not relevant but it is actually gay culture [ here’s a cute compilation ]  

• a fansign was held at a wedding hall and him and changkyun walked together as ‘grooms’ while the rest of mx was singing wedding themes (ft. hyunghyuk) [ here ]

giVE ME REASONS WHY I SHOULD STAN MX

okay so finally after a whole century, i’ve finished this !! :’) this shouldn’t have taken me so long i’m srry ;; nd i’m not good at explaining things but..i tried my best !

1. talent ! monsta x rlly,..is so multi talented? like firstly you have the breathtaking vocals, vocalists: shownu, wonho, minhyuk, kihyun, and hyungwon and the rap line that always goes so hard ! rappers: jooheon, and I.M (changkyun) they rlly have such a nice discography bops after bops! and they’ve worked with many different artists ! also dancing !! they’re always so powerful onstage ! (the members also have a lot of other talents/hobbies for example: minhyuk and wonho are gr8 artists ! mister kihyun is a top notch photographer, hyungwon is a dj DJ H.One !! he’s performed with changkyun, jooheon, and some other amazing artists a few times ! jooheon, I.M, and wonho are very talented lyric writers/producers ! nd mister shownu !!! our own superstar bear nd leader is the king of variety shows and dance !) 

2. 7 sweethearts ! mx is never afraid to show their love for their fans, and i rlly like how they’re so open about a lot of different things; they discuss their struggles a lot and always reflect on things nd try to share what they’ve learned. here’s just a few examples of them being the sweetest:

wonho mx’s biggest cheese is always telling us how much he loves us nd how much we mean to him; he’s even proposed to the whole fanbase dkjfdf wonho’s also been a part of different charities nd is constantly breaking gender roles; his ideal type is just someone who can make him ramen well ! “as long as you can cook ramen well, gender doesn’t matter to me”

idk if u saw or not but there was an article abt mx’s youngest, mister I.M ! at a recent fan event the fans were told to kneel among other issues and he told them not to and he and the rest of mx asked the staff for chairs so the fans wouldn’t have to kneel on the ground :’(( lately things aren’t being organized that well, but mx rlly tries to make the best out of it and always makes sure mbbs are taken care of ;;

mx loves kids !! there’s a lot of videos where mx stops to say hello to babies and kids, nd in their show mxray they worked in a daycare !! and in the second season they’re reunited with their babies and it’s the cutest and purest thing i’ve ever seen :((( (a compilation of some of the cute moments from mxray season 1 !! x )

nd lastly the members just genuinely love each other so much?? they’re always so supportive and they always make sure to tell each other how beautiful and amazing they are ! when they go on separate shoots they always mention how much they miss the other members nd shownu’s even said that the members are all he has ;; 

3. the fandom ! i’ve been in quite a few different fandoms but i’ve never been more comfortable than i am being a monbebe !! in my experiences, mbbs are usually just rlly funny, kind, and supportive; nd i haven’t seen us start many fanwars, we’re typically the ones to end them; we have our issues here and there, but overall we’re pretty chill, and most of us do our best to welcome new fans and reflect well on the boys ! ofc u don’t have to be involved in the fandom to stan them, but for me it’s a plus ! i’ve met a lot of cool ppl !!

It’s late but I want to say I’m kind of sad about line distribution but oh well ;-; As long as he have line, that’s okay for me ;; even though I wish for even line distribution but saying it won’t change otl

it’s ok that it’s late!! honestly i hadn’t said anything yet because i dont like to be negative especially Right as everyones full with excitement but i was a bit disappointed as well :-( idk.. there was both good and bad!! i dont wanna clog anyone’s dash so it’s under the cut

jealousy was a bit disappointing for line distribution for both hyungwon and minhyuk.. hyungwon’s was ok but only because of his “jealousy baby jealousy” which isn’t really.. a singing line.. so im kinda :/ the distributions for the main tracks were the best during beautiful and since then they’ve returned to this questionable state.. it’s frustrating. they barely get stage time either (obviously.. since they barely have lines) except for when they’re in the middle (and lmao it’s painfully obvs starship is trying to push them as visuals over vocals).. rip... but yes at least they both have lines.. and truly it could be worse so!! yea..

but! this is both positive and negative.. depends on who you focus on :-( i was pleasantly surprised by the full album’s distribution? ignoring jealousy and largely ignoring destroyer lmao but the other songs had a Lot of minhyuk and also just.. mx mixed up their “formula”! like normally the same members sing the same parts in each song (i.e. jookyun get rap verses, kihyun sings the chorus with wonho or shownu, minhyuk and hyungwon fill in the verses and remaining shownu/wonho get the bridges) but this album rly strayed from that which allowed the distributions to be better and also just.. a lot of variety!! it was refreshing!! but... while i was soo grateful looking at minhyuk’s parts they sort of threw hyungwon in the dirt for half of the songs still which was. again. frustrating :) it was a bit the other way around for the code -- minhyuk only had one line in the majority of the songs while hyungwon had decent distributions... i know it’s unrealistic to expect every song to have a good or even distribution but i just dont understand how within one mini album there are members whose parts can probably be played in a compilation of less than 45 seconds.. :-(

anyway... here’s to hoping that we get to hear their lovely voices in the future!! and that they get to sing covers for us!! that wonho and jooheon will continue to compose and arrange songs since they’re the only people who know how to distribute parts properly apparently!! :D

⟡ Back after too long with the second entry in this little audio compilation series for my not-so-secret fifth beloved of Monsta X, the one and only Jooheon. Where do I even begin? I should provide some context for my general music tastes, which do not include a keen interest in rapping. It takes someone special to sink their hooks in me in that arena — and Jooheon is unequivocally someone special. He is an immensely skilled and versatile composer, writer, producer, rapper, and singer. I do not say this lightly: he is in a tier of musicians that fully lives, breathes, and embodies music. You can hear and feel the intention behind his musical decisions in every single note and syllable. His abilities as a rapper and singer clearly feed into and support one another, from breath support to tone control. He has, in my humble opinion, some of the greatest diction in the business. His performances are explosive and captivating, whether he is barreling through a rap verse with both speed and clarity (대동단결), building to a literal roar of emotion (too many to list here), or drawing you to the edge of your seat, air leaving your own lungs, as he deliberately ends a phrase with no breath left to give (Mercy). I respect him so much as a musician — as a creator and performer always challenging himself to reach new heights. I realize this compilation is heavily skewed toward my favorites (and the arbitrary limit I'm giving myself is only 1 true solo song per comp), but I hope it captures the intensity of his range as both a rapper and singer.

⟡ Kicking off a little audio series of some of my favorite Monsta X vocal moments with Minhyuk, a versatile tenor with a unique timbre that has swept me away the more I’ve gotten to know it!  This compilation may seem to favor Reason, but in my (brainrot’s) defense, he sings over two octaves on their latest mini-album and one of my goals is to highlight as much of each individual’s range as possible. I included many of my favorite moments, phrasing and context permitting, and veryyy roughly presented them in ascending order (with some exceptions to alleviate some of the abrupt shifts in mood).

I am very partial to Minhyuk’s range in approximately F4 to C5. He can sound incredibly sweet there (If With U) yet also really dig in when the moment calls for it (Got Me in Chains, Rush Hour). Also his range, as already mentioned and showcased especially on Reason, is just... phew, breathtaking. I love the contrast between his low, nasally Gambler opening or the moodier The Dreaming against how magically floaty and nimble he can be in passages like the bridge of Got Me in Chains. If you’ve been on my blog for five minutes, you probably know that tenors have to work a little harder for my undivided attention, but he has captured it with his unique tone and musicality, and I’m always delighted to hear him tackle new challenges (looking at you, Crescendo!).
