---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naga is the second pecies from the Tokonaga Empire. Following up on my last post, they are the Ying to the Tokai's Yang. Their snake-like bodies and flowing movements show the most delicate and spiritual attributes of their civilization. Although (and I say it again) I don't really agree with the concept of linking a specific species with a single role in their cultures, when I was working on these creatures a barrage of images came to me: dancing priestess and musicians, refined swordmen with delicate techniques, graceful fighters, etc... the aestethic possibilities were the main reason why I wanted to include this race in Drommer, and what better place to do so than sharing an empire with the other reptilian species of this fantasy universe. It's hard to find a succint way to detail the main attributes of their civilization, and this text would have to be way longer than I intend to if I try to do so, and that's why I will just name the main inspirations for them: This Empire is based on Feudal Japan, keeping in line with the Oriental theme of these first two Spheres, which means ther are Shoguns, Samurai, Wandering wonks and priestess, huge terrains of untamed nature, dotted with little towns and villages, only a handful of big cities in the whole Empire, and a cultural and migrant blockade on their borders...

The Double Bass with Zoe Johnson / Day 2.
Kol Nidrei by Max Bruch
Though yesterday I talked about a more modern piece, today I’m going to dial it back to a more traditional piece. The Kol Nidrei (ָכּל ִנְדֵרי) is a prayer traditionally sang by Jews on Yom Kippur to represent atonement. Though generally played instrumentally on cello, it is commonly adapted for double bass as well - though I might be a tad biased, I prefer the sound of a bass for this particular piece. The cello/bass part for Kol Nidre is written by Max Bruch, though the video linked here is performed and arranged by Matthew McDonald (accompanied by pianist Tamako Takahashi.)

The Double Bass with Zoe Johnson / Day 1.
Iberique Peninsulaire by François Rabbath
To kick off this week of bass solos, I’d like to start off with one of my favorite composers and performers for the double bass - François Rabbath. Despite growing up learning Rabbath’s method of bass playing, I hadn’t played any of his solo works until several years into my bass playing career due to their difficulty. The first piece of his I played was a solo named Iberique Peninsulaire, and it’s still one of my favorite works for solo bass. The piece is very unique, but still relies on more traditional techniques than is usual for Rabbath. Iberique showcases how bass can make for a beautiful solo even without accompaniment by a piano or orchestra. Due to the lack of accompaniment, the melody is able to employ both the higher and lower registers of the bass without worrying about being covered by any accompaniment.
Enjoy! - Zoe Johnson, @thatsareallybigguitar

Interview with Zoe Johnson, guest-editor / The Double Bass
This week Musica in Extenso is hosting Zoe Johnson [ @thatsareallybigguitar ] as invited guest-editor in a special week about The Double Bass.
Our staff made an exclusive interview with Zoe Johnson, focusing on some interesting questions about her connection with music, about the instrument and general hobbies.
1. Please tell us a few things about you!
Hello, Musica in Extenso! My name is Zoe Johnson, and I’m a high school double bass student in America. I’ve been playing bass classically for around 7 years, and I’ve started experimenting with jazz for the past couple years.
2. Tell us about your double bass experiences!
The double bass is a very unique instrument - it very much has its upsides and downsides, but I’ve grown to love it. (Gotta say, it’s great for scholarships.) One of the most distinctive parts of the ‘double bass experience,’ so to speak, is just how much variety you get. When I first started I was very classical-centered, but when I came to the arts school I’m at now, I got to learn a lot more about different types of bass playing. Jazz is the most polar example of this - there was a whole other side to bass playing that I hardly knew about - and while that can be very intimidating, it’s great if you embrace it and just see what feels good and sounds right. Bass is the only stringed instrument that gets the best of both worlds like this - you can be playing in an orchestra or string quintet one day, and picking up an electric bass for a band the next. No other instrument is truly like that, and it’s great! Another thing I have to mention is the sense of community that comes with playing bass - generally, you’ll only come in contact with one or a few bassists in an area or ensemble, and you get to grow close bonds with those people, rather than a large and more impersonal section that might come with playing other instruments. Though it may be harder to find other bassists on a day-to-day basis, whenever you find a bass-specific event it’s very rewarding to talk to other people who share the same passion as you, and learn more about it.
3. First contact with music:
Prior to my parents insisting I give learning an instrument a shot, I had little to no interest or experience with classical or orchestral music. Upon my parents telling me to pick an instrument, I had no awareness of any strings other than the violin, and was determined not to learn an instrument that I had to ‘play under my neck,’ for some reason or another. Upon the discovery of the cello, I was eager to pick up a bow and join a beginner strings program. I switched to bass only after a year, as the program then required private lessons - as a very stubborn child, I wouldn’t fare well with the only cello teachers in the area (who were very strict,) but there was a local bass teacher who was great with kids. I liked bass enough to keep going, and here I am today, at an arts high school for music.
4. Tell us your proudest achievement in music/performing!
My proudest achievement would probably be getting first chair in all state orchestra last year (and hopefully this year!) Other than that I won a small solo competition a couple years back, but I haven’t gotten the opportunity to enter many competitions just yet. I’m hoping in the coming years I’ll have more opportunities to apply myself.
5. Five words that describe your character:
If I had to pick five words I’d like to say optimistic, clever, adventurous, cool-headed, and relatively social. I’m up to try anything once, and recently I’ve spent more time outside of my bubble.
6. How do you spend your free time?
Outside of practicing (of course,) I’ve always had a hobby for art. I enjoy doodling quite a bit, and if I can find the time I work on small paintings on occasion. Additionally, I enjoy baking and reading.
7. Lifelong dreams?

I’ve never been one to have hard-set goals for a career or anything of the sort, but I know that I always want to keep music in my life, even if not at a professional level. That being said, I’m quite good at mathematics, and being a teacher or professor is appealing.
Thank you, Zoe!
Join us this week and stay tuned for double bass music! - Editor-in-Chief
