last show: I am also not much of a live-music person generally, but I went to see Barenaked Ladies last summer in Oregon with my best friend, a show that had been postponed since 2020, and it was super fun.

currently watching:

Thanks to @itsactuallycorrine putting it on my dash a lot lately, I've started my first Ugly Betty rewatch, and I had forgotten how goofy and hilarious and sincere and full of heart that show was, so I'm super enjoying that.

@wereadtoliveathousandlives and I are coming to the end of our slow rewatch of Nancy Drew because S4 is FINALLY ALMOST HERE, May 31st on the CW, 8pm EDT!! (@samirant, take note!)

Troy and I are slowly making our way through the most recent season of Mythic Quest, and we just watched the first episode of Night Agent (@andyouweremine kept putting it on my dash) and might keep going with that.

We've paused on Ted Lasso so we can marathon it once the season is through.

currently reading:

I just last night finished my re-read of the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom duology. I might give the Nikolai Lantsov books a try next, since I haven't read them before and now I've met him and some of the other characters on the Netflix series Shadow and Bone (my annoyance with S2 is what prompted my re-read of the Crows books).

Technically still in the middle of listening to Broken Homes, the 4th Rivers of London book, with Troy.

Also, thanks to @amazingstacey's recommendation, I've listened to most of Mrs. Wickham by Sarah Page, a fun audio play about what might have happened with Lydia Bennet after her marriage to Wickham.

I just finished Contested Will, a book about the history of anti-Stratfordians who doubt that William Shakespeare was the guy from Stratford.

I read about ten pages of Murder Must Advertise, the 8th Peter Wimsey mystery, before getting distracted by the Crows, and I'll get back to that at some point (cc: @preux-chevalier)

Elliora and I will start our last two books for the school year on monday, First Light by Rebecca Stead and My Name is Not Easy by Debby Dahl Edwardson

Some of my favorite tropes in media

1. Found family

Welp. Why am I surprised?

In addition to a ton of platonic relationships, there's also a bang-on hilarity in each one of these groups.

Six of Crows (the progression in Kaz and Wylan's dynamic??? Nina and Inej being besties??? Jesper and Inej having a running joke of scheming face lol??? Matthias forgoing his prejudices to team up with Jesper and Kuwei???)

The Hargreeves siblings??? (We're not gonna talk about what's going on between Luther and Allison 💀 but the rest of them 🥺🥺🥺)

2. Ballroom dance scenes

Oh, to be twirling across the dancefloor in the arms of your partner (bonus points if it's your enemy💖) and you can't decide if your heightened breathing is due to the music's tempo or the 🌟tension🌟

Whyyyyyyy did we have to stop balls!?!?!? Whyyyyyyyy???? Are you telling me that we lost the opportunity to wear our most artful dresses and have a night of elegant dancing and food and it was replaced by nightclubs??? T_T

3. The sunshine character actually has problems.

Love, love, love it when the sunshine, always joking, always kind character opens up about their own issues and insecurities yet they don't stop being kind and don't lose their heart just because the world is going to hell

Prime examples: Ron Weasley (au contraire, HP fandom, this guy has one of the best characterizations in the books and y'all just sleep on him because you want your special ones so much), Leo Valdez (my boy repaired a whole dragon alone, dealt with losing his mom, was homeless and yet keeps the atmosphere light and happy and makes hilarious jokes T_T), Inej Ghafa (horribly traumatized, has done things to survive in a brutal world, deserves the world, and yet is so, so, so fiercely kind and compassionate and always there for her friends💖)

4. When the tough, scary one is soft for kids or animals

Nothing is more wholesome than watching a stone-cold badass softening towards a kid or adopting a baby animal or just showing love for their family (Five Hargreeves 🥺). Shows that they still have a bit of their heart unguarded wnd hopeful.

5. Wholesome friendships that just stay friendships + siblings being siblings.

My ace ass hates love triangles with a fiery passion and it's really tiring to see every friendship being shipped left and right or being pushed into love triangle *side-eyes CC*

Lucie Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs are my favorite parabatai duo and I need more content of their friendship and antics pleaseee. I need more of them being a chaotic duo.

Alastair and Cordelia are my favorite brother sister duo, just with the way they address each other and how Cordelia thought about killing him during the demon attacks in ChoG.

Percy Jackson and Grover Underwood. The guy sailed across the Bermuda Triangle to rescue his best friend.

Also the potential we lost with Hermione and Ginny because R*wling couldn't write more than one PoV -_-

But on a happy note, Ron and Harry are my favorite and I love these dorks so much. They really become brothers by the end *gross sobbing*

Aru and her Pandava sisters and the two braincells they share🤦‍♀️😂

Once more, the Hargreeves family going from strangers to dumbass chaotic family in TUA s2😂🤦‍♀️

6. Enemies-to-lovers

Bonus points if they're also academic rivals. Why is this trope not used more? We could explore some great themes on the shit education system.

No one? Fine I'll write a fic myself.

Also, enemies to lovers =/= abusive relationships. Keep that trash away from me where the love interests are manipulative, abusive towards their love interests and then later fall in love with them. My favorite progression goes like this:

Ugh pretentious ass, look at them==>ugh why are we working together?==>why do we work so well as a team!?==>goddammit why are they so nice!?==>I guess we're friends now==>what is this tension!?!==>*notices something pretty about them* uh oh. 😳😳😳

Prime examples: Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Kallias and Alessandra from The Shadows Between Us. Jude and Cardan from TFOTA (I know they're toxic. Would not stan that relationship irl but I loved their development in the trilogy)

7. When the best friends go to an event as each other's date and are mutually pining over each other but are oblivious dumbasses.🤦‍♀️

Bonus points if other people mistake them for a couple and they can't even get out a proper explanation ;)

*whispers* Harry and Ron should've asked each other to the Yule Ball

8. More thoughtfully-written boys in YA

Please move on beyond the bad boy and broody, immortal, muscular warrior trope. Give representation to my PoC, neurodivergent, trans and fat boys. Give boys dark features (I promise they are as entrancing as blue eyes or blonde hair). Make them emotional, make them something other than stoic, make them like teenagers (and not adults playing teens). They deserve the world and well-written role models as much as girls do.

Prime example: Ron Weasley, Jesper, Wylan, Enrique and Hypnos from TGW, and Julian Blackthorn.

I could write essays for Ron but all I'll say is that r*wling did a good job by giving the role of emotional support (that's usually considered a feminine job) to a boy and made him funny and kind-hearted🥺

As for Julian, like I said before ruthless characters being soft for their family make me go T_T

9. Showing feminism with an equal society (as Tricia Levenseller does it), wholesome f/f and m/f friendships, normalizing the presence of LGBTQ people, without trashing men or femininity.

If you have to deliberately create a highly patriarchal society to show off your progressive views and badass female MC, then you're doing feminism wrong :)

I’ve reached the point in the Ozyverse where I’m starting to see the larger shape of things; at least for the next few chapters I know the highlights, but there’s always boring (to write) filler scenes that have to be done between them. I haven’t quite finished all the filler scenes on the way to this one but I always say write the stuff you want to write first; that way you’re not hustling through the rest of it.

Ever since thinking about introducing elements of CC into the story, I’ve been working out how to include Fourteen Back and Bowman Jenkins, Nature’s Favorite Gardener. What I ended up doing is slamming together Fourteen Back and Twelve Grimmauld Place; Fourteen Back is now a servants’ house behind Twelve Grimmauld Place (now known as Fourteen); Back now faces out not onto a real alley but onto Diagon Alley, and it will be the new, improved Court location of Sandust Books (eventually replaced by Tonks & Tonks).

Which made introducing Bowman even more fun....

"Might as well go see what kind of state Fourteen is in. Probably looks like a real haunted h -- " Sirius stopped in the open doorway, gazing out on the coachyard that Fourteen had shared with its servant quarters.

When he'd lived here, as a child, it was usually just a bare yard; off to one corner there'd been a little vegetable garden to serve the kitchen, and there'd been a row of trees on either side to provide privacy, but that was all. That had been almost fifteen years ago; ten at least since his parents died and the place was emptied of the last few servants ("Give them a good pension and don't bring up Fourteen to me ever again," Sirius had told the lawyer). He'd assumed it would be wild growth and weeds.

Instead, he was looking out on a warm, verdant green lawn, lined with hedges where the trees had been and rose bushes in front of the hedges. New trees had been planted at intervals, and he could see they were heavy with fruit -- apples, plums, lemons. Two trees with what looked like mangos on them stood on either side of the back door of Fourteen Back; the building itself was ringed with beds of wildflowers. The lawn narrowed to a single walkway about fifteen feet away, and on either side of the walk were massive beds full of vegetables -- beans and lettuce, onions, all kinds of herbs running rampant --

He stepped out into the tiny Eden, staring around him. Harry ran out past him, immediately heading for a tree to climb. Remus joined him on the lawn, perplexed.

"Was it some kind of charm?" he asked. "I know I never saw the place when you lived here, but -- "

"No. None of this was here. Look," Sirius said, pointing past the vegetables. The garden beds stopped about ten feet from the back door of Fourteen, and the grass withered to brown there -- the malevolence of the house was obvious. "My parents didn't do this. Who -- "

"Hey! You!" someone shouted, and a door burst open in the fence, between two trees where the hedge had been pruned away. The door had never been there before, Sirius thought, or at least he didn't remember it. Someone was barreling through from the yard next door, brandishing a shovel. "Get out of here, you lollygaggers! Trespassers!"

The man was definitely Court; he had a full beard and side-whiskers, and he was summoning some kind of fireball with his free hand. Sirius turned, threw both his hands down at his sides, and let lightning crackle off them. He could hear, behind him, Remus taking up a position in front of Harry's tree. The man drew up short when nobody ran.

"Tough to trespass on land you own," Sirius snarled. "Who the fuck are you?"

The man blinked at him, then closed his fist, the fire there winking out. He dropped his shovel and pointed, then burst out laughing. Sirius, now as perplexed as anyone, dissipated the lightning into little crackles along his fingertips.

"Sirius Black!" the man crowed, clapping his hands together. "As I breathe. Look at you, all grown up."

Remus joined Sirius again, Harry held on his hip but leaning curiously away to study this newcomer.

"You don't remember me. Well, I grew the beard. It's Bowman. I live next door," the man said, jerking his thumb at the door in the wall. "You used to steal my mangos when you were a tyke."

Sirius had a brief sense-memory of scaling the fence as a child, climbing the mango trees there and sitting in one after dark on warm summer nights...

"Holy shit, Bowman Jenkins," he managed, coming forward to shake the man's hand. "You're right, it was the beard. How are you?"

"Well, I'm well. Sorry to burst in but occasionally some young punk comes in here to steal my apples or get drunk on the lawn."

"Your apples, eh?" Sirius asked. "Did you do this?"

"Well, I always was a gardener and it didn't seem right, this whole place standing empty so long. I could see it from our bedroom window and I won't lie, it gnawed at me. I tried to ask about buying up the plot at least, but I never heard back. Finally I said to myself, well, if whoever owns it now is mad about the free landscaping he can sue me. Cut a gate in the wall and started fertilizing." He looked around himself. "Cheered the place up, I think."

"It's beautiful, Mr. Jenkins," Remus said, setting Harry down to run back to his tree.

"Thank you."

"Ah! Bowman Jenkins, Remus Lupin."

"Pleased to meet you," Remus said. "I believe I've heard a few stories about your fruit trees, over the years."

Bowman grinned.

"Anyway, he's here to help me take a look around the old place," Sirius continued. "I'm taking possession of Fourteen Back."

"Are you? That's great. Moving back to Court, huh?"

"Not entirely. I own a little bookstore, and we needed a new storefront. Remus runs the store," Sirius said.

"And...?" Bowman jerked a thumb at Fourteen, glaring down at them. Sirius looked up at it.

"Haven't decided," he said finally. "Considering arson."

"Well, mind the vegetables if you do, I guess," Bowman said unconcernedly. He'd known Sirius's parents; Sirius didn't get the sense he'd liked them. They weren't terribly likeable, and he knew they'd thought of Bowman as <i>new money</i>. "Oh, damn. Do you want the yard too? I can clear out anything you don't want, but -- "

"Hell, I don't care," Sirius said. "I'd sell it to you if I could, but it's entailed. If I can wrench it free, the place is yours. As long as you don't mind a couple of mangos stolen here and there."

"Not at all," Bowman said, eyes drifting past them to where Harry was unconcernedly wrenching a mango free from a branch.

"Ah. That's my boy, Harry," Sirius said. Bowman gave him a thoughtful look.

"Harry Potter?" he asked. Sirius laid a finger aside his nose. "Ah. Bless. I'd like to meet him. Maybe not today," he added. "But you're welcome to come through the gate any time you like. My wife always has something baking and she made more jam than she knows what to do with, this year."

"We'll take you up on that. Good to see you again," Sirius said.

"Likewise. Hope to see more of you. Well, back to my own acres for me. Good luck," he added, as he crossed back to the rough door cut into the fence. It shut behind him gently, and Sirius dropped into the grass, laughing.

"That gutsy land grabber," he grinned, as Remus sat next to him. "What a pair on him. Just came right through the fence and planted zucchini. I love gardeners."

"You have to admit it's the nicest surprise this old place ever dished out," Remus said.

"It's wonderful. You can barely see Fourteen past the runner beans." Sirius stretched his arms over his head, enjoying the smell of the grass. "Feels like a good omen for Sandust."

"I suppose so. He must have put some weather charms on the whole yard, to be able to grow mangos in London. Oh, Harry," Remus said, as Harry came running up to them. He'd skinned his knee coming down from his perch and, while not crying, clearly wanted to be fussed over. Sirius sat up and gathered him close, murmuring a healing charm over the scrape.

Dobie Gillis (TV Series 1959-1963)

Episode: “The Chicken from Outer Space” (1960)

As hard as he tries, Dobie just can't seem to get rid of Zelda Gilroy, the one girl he doesn't want but wants him. Zelda is aware of Dobie's failings, such as not being a very bright student and thus not having any future career prospects. Zelda compensates for that by mapping out their future: they will live on a farm after they get married so that Dobie will at least be able to provide food. In being a farmer, Dobie has to take biology class, with which Zelda will help him. Dobie agrees to take biology only because he knows that brainy Zelda has his academic best interest in mind and will help him. Dobie sees being a farmer as his only future hope, regardless of if Zelda is in that future. As usual, Maynard follows Dobie into biology class. Their first project is to examine the effects of hormones on chicken. One will be injected with female hormones, one will be injected with male hormones and the control chicken will get no injection. Three problems arise with their new arrangement. First, Mr. Gillis, who doesn't know that Dobie has chickens, keeps on hearing rooster crows, which he is made to believe is all in his imagination. Second, Dobie wants out of his arrangement with Zelda if only because he has met the pretty Imogene Burkhart, who he sees as a possible girlfriend/future wife. And third, Maynard is forced to give the chickens their injections. He believes that a 2 cc injection means a 2 cup injection. — Huggo

The clean-shaven star Dobie Gillis played by Dwayne Hickman would later say that the series represented “the end of innocence of the 1950s before the oncoming 1960s revolution”. His friend Maynard Krebbs had a beard and dressed and wore his hair like young Beatnik Zelda Gilroy was a stubborn and “brainy” would-be girl friend (and wife) that Dobie rejected. The series was notable because it was the first series by a major TV network to feature teenagers as the leads. In each episode Dobie would dourble as “narrator” while sitting in front of Rodin’s sculpture “The Thinker”. Zelda had a habbit of wrinkling her nose and scrunching her face as a way of courting Dobie. Dobie would say “STOP THAT”!!
