mama pours me tea, and it brings tears to my eyes for the second time that night; her cruelty and her kindness both maim me. her kindness because I can’t hate her, not fully. and her cruelty because I can't love her fully either.

I had to share Tina being a wounderful mother, I love them so much Transcript: Empanada: Yesterday was a bit difficult, I lashed out Tina: Oh honey, you're just a girl Tina: The relationship of mo-, I'm going to cry just thinking about it, but mother-daughter relationships are one of the more complex relationships that history has ever had to offer, you know what I mean? Tina: You have to deal with, every women out there deal with constant misogyny, you know, it's fine to get a little angry sometimes, we're as girls, we're held to different standarts all the time. If men get angry, then they're just dudes. Tina: You, as a growing girl, sometimes you get a little angry, and that's okay, that's very normal and it's good that you feel safe to express your emotions and part of growing up is learning how to express them in ways that are appropriate, and sometimes we make mistakes and it's just part of the process, but we're not make you feel bad about that because you are growing, and that's the whole point, so do not feel bad.
Tina: But I think it's a very sweet gesture that you want to make her cupcakes, so we can do that together, because I should also say sorry for not being here for Valentine's Day.

The thing about comics canon is that sometimes the level of complexity is off the charts.
Take Barbara and Jim Gordon’s relationship.
Babs is Jim’s daughter. That’s a truth in all continuities.
But her birth parents?
Are they Jim Gordon and Thelma/Barbara Gordon (Silver Age, Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #2), where her biological brother is Tony Gordon? (Pre-crisis can’t decide on what Barbara’s mother’s name is and how many times Jim’s been married)
Are they Roger Gordon and Thelma Gordon (post-Crisis, Secret Origins v2 #20), where Jim and Barbara Eileen adopted Babs after her parents died in a car crash and her cousin and adoptive brother is James Gordon Jnr?
Are they Jim Gordon and Thelma Gordon (post-Crisis, Gotham Knights #6), where Jim had an affair with his sister-in-law that may have resulted in the pregnancy that led to Barbara, and her half-brother is James Gordon Jnr?
Are they Jim Gordon and Barbara Eileen Gordon (new 52, Batgirl v4 #5) where her biological brother is James Gordon Jnr?
Because each of these graduations changes things. Tony is Babs’ older brother. James Jnr is her younger brother.
James Jnr’s psychopathy has an additional twist to it if Barbara joined the family as a pre-teen, where he’s already acting out and being creepy, as does Barbara Eileen leaving with James Jnr. She’s legitimately terrified for her life about her new sibling and nobody is listening.
Whereas if James Jnr is her biological brother and they grew up together, Barbara’s been watching him his entire life, and seen his slide and so spent her childhood questioning herself on how bad he’s become makes even more sense, because that’s her little brother. But also she found him torturing animals, she can never be sure if the action he just took was meant to hurt or to help, etc etc.
And each permutation of this story brings a different edge to Babs’ childhood and backstory. But simultaneously there’s a central truth – the person Barbara calls Dad is Jim Gordon, and that aspect of their relationship on page has never, ever changed.

i love how you explore different types of relationships, not just romantic ones, and i was curious if there's any dynamics between the cast that you love to work on aside from Sera and Lili? or which one you struggle to translate onto the page since relationships can be difficult to explain sometimes?
I'd say favorite relationship i like to work on besides Sera and Lili would probably be Luvart and Powers. I just love how Luvart is a genuinely cruel and vicious person but when she's around Powers she just turns into the over the top cartoonish bully because she's basically trying to impress Powers while demean her.
It's hard to portray on Powers side but it's also the same for her, but a bit more subtle. you'll notice Powers typically jumps to "attack, ask questions later" with other demons but with Luvart she enjoys taunting her and putting her down because its so easy to get under Luvart's rocky skin.
Difficult to translate would honestly be Sera and Powers? Which funnily enough people have stated to be the most confusing because they don't really understand their dynamic. Their relationship is meant to be intentionally hard to pin down (hence why i beg people not to put it into a box like sibling or mother/daughter, nor do i want them to be read as ex lovers) but the big problem is that for a relationship as complex as theirs, its really hard to put it all into 4 panels. The only other example would be Powers and Prince (and yes i havent introduced prince yet so this might be confusing) but Prince is meant to be Powers sort of rival, sort of ally, but there's a noticeable bit of tension between them. but know once people catch on to that, it'll be immediately read as romantic and that i'll turn them into a couple, which isnt my intention.

It occurs to me as I was recently rewatching Chiantishire that something I didn’t pay attention to the first time around is how Caroline handles discussions of the past, particularly the Logan-Caroline divorce and its aftereffects. Unlike Logan, who basically bulldozes his way through memories to reconstruct a future he can handle, Caroline’s engagement in ‘the past’ seems dependent on who she’s talking to.
Long Caroline-Shiv-Kendall post beneath the cut.
I get the sense from Chiantishire that Shiv wasn’t very aware of the details of the divorce. She didn’t really know how or why Caroline left – just that her mother wasn’t there. And in her absence, Logan’s narrative became Shiv’s truth: Caroline didn’t want her – didn’t even care enough to fight to keep her in her life. So fine. Shiv doesn’t want her either. And in Italy, she let Caroline know that.
And then something interesting happens - Caroline actually engages. She admits that she wasn’t the greatest mother in one breath and brandishes a verbal knife with another. “I may have been a bit of a spotty mother but you’ve been a shitty daughter.” It’s vicious all the way around, but it’s a kind of mutual wounding. It’s a conversation. The past is painful, but it’s open for renegotiation. Because underneath it all, there’s the heart of something still alive between the two of them.
But with Kendall...with Kendall there’s nothing left to engage in because the distance is already too great.
In the cut scene from Pre-Nuptial, we get this gem:
Tumblr media
Here, Kendall tries to forgive Caroline for the same “abandonment” Shiv brings up in Chiantishire, but it’s met with a very different response from Caroline. Instead of an acknowledgement of being a “spotty mother,” Caroline goes on the offensive. She presses him on the double standard he’s applying to her because this is an old hurt, one that has its roots in how Kendall is always Logan’s, even when he’s privy to details that should make him think differently.
There’s an underlying implication in Caroline’s response that suggests Kendall has much more of a picture of what led to the divorce than Shiv does. As the oldest, the heir, and Logan’s sometimes confidant, Kendall would have likely had a front row seat to the breakdown of his parents’ marriage. To the moment Logan banished Caroline from her children’s lives. And while he might not have known everything, to Caroline he was capable of knowing the difference between leaving and being pushed out.
And her son’s blame? It’s not unexpected. Kendall has always been Logan’s. Was stamped with his father’s name from the moment he was born. But that doesn’t make it sting any less when her first born, the one she sees her temperament in, sides with the man forcing her out. And while I think Caroline and Kendall weren’t particularly close before the divorce, I can imagine this being the fracture that was never set. An injury that never quite healed right, unable to support the weight of a relationship from that point forward.
Sure, Caroline will coo when she sees him. But that’s because she loves all of her children – including Kendall. Because no matter what, she really does want to be in their lives. But she won’t engage with him the way she will with Shiv because there’s a world of difference between Shiv, who has the ability to one day understand her, and Kendall, who has already chosen not to. So really, what is there left to say? Kendall’s made it clear; he’s chosen to become his father’s creature, to adopt his narrative and echo his actions – and Caroline can’t stomach suffering his blame. But with Shiv? Maybe some day, if they keep at it, they’ll end up on the same page.
As a general note, these relationships are obviously super complex and have a lot more going on than just musings about the divorce so to save this from getting too long and disorganized, second and third parts on Shiv and Caroline and on Kendall and Caroline already in the works haha. Will go back and link them all together as they’re written and posted. If you made it to the end – thank you for listening to the ramblings of an insane Carolinegirl.

Okay sorry I was talking with my mother
1) I hate sir Pentious’s new character. Sure, he’s fun. But oh my gosh, I miss his old character. The way that’s he’s not at all remorseful and just purely wants destruction and to rule over the pentagram city. But now he’s too goody goody(I haven’t seen the new episode, pls don’t spoil it), and turned WAYYYY to easily over to Charlie’s anti-Christ ass, and wanting to be redeemed. He should have stayed a spy for longer and I would’ve loved to see his dynamic grow with the Vees(especially Vox) and how he worked for them as a spy. His rape scene wasp so uncomfortable and unnecessary, and speaking of that his and cherris relationship should of never of even been thought about. It’s such an awkward thing, as they’re rivals and Cherri has destroyed things that he’s made and insults him.
2) speaking of Cherri, she offered Angel drugs(which seems like it’s a normal thing for them as she’s so causal about it) when she knew he was there at the hotel that’s for redemption, but also she was so rude to Angel when he was trying to get Nifty out of the cleaning closet??? She’s a much better friend in the pilot and in the addict music video. She’s showing actual friendship and concern for Angel, nothing like she does now.
3) Alastor. Sure, I like his moments, but he’s so painfully edgy it’s not that good. His radio sound effects are good, I miss the old effects that he had in the pilot and his old voice actor, but of course viv is a “it’s my way or the high-way” gal and she dumped all of the previous cast. He’s nearly completely different now, claiming that Charlie is like his daughter(I swear to god he better be manipulative to her in that moment), when in the pilot he openly mocked her and what she was trying to do. He seems way to open about his emotions and wanting r help Charlie, using a TV(???) and playing along when what she wants to do. He also seems to much like an attention whore, which could be a good character trait if he wasn’t the way he is now. Also he’s too touchy touchy with everyone, especially Charlie.
4) Angel dust is not as interesting now as he was to me in the pilot. Now he’s just a porn star who gets raped and abused and is going to be redeemed. I’d love to see his old character traits(from before the pilot and during, such as mafia, insane, violent, ect), rather than just “oh he’s a gay sex spider who sometimes does violence but he’s such a good person now for finding love and refusing drugs!!!! :3”.
5) Husk’s new voice. I see the appeal of his new one, but his old voice actor just hit different. Make that skinny 1970s gambler man sound like he smokes 5 packs a day. Also I can’t stop thinking about the cat from Coraline.
6) almost everything about vaggie. Her design, her actions, and her backstory. It’s cool that she’s a fallen Angel but oh my gosh!! Don’t reveal that in the first season!! Slow burn that shit!! And why did she do quickly realize that he’s murdering ‘innocent souls’?? They’re in hell for a reason, she didn’t have to think that just because it was a kid it was innocent of any crimes it did. They revealed it too soon, it would have been a good twist for season 2.
7) vivziepop seemingly mocks Christianity and I had to look up how Saint Peter looked like, AND SHE WHITE-WASHED HIM SO BAD. HE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE HE SHOULD, AND HES SUCH A COMPLEX PEROSN FROM THE BIBLE AND AND SHORTENED HIS CHARACTER SO BADLY.
Anyways, my TED talk is over. Thank you
Thanks for your TED Talk, Anon. It was an excellent talk.

The Animus and Animus Possession
A woman is compensated by the masculine animus, the personified spirit of a woman that corresponds to the paternal Logos, representative of rationality, discrimination and cognition. It is the union of Eros, the expression of her true nature – that is, relatedness, connection and the feminine feeling value – and Logos that creates the instinctual drive toward wholeness necessary for psychological development and individuation.
While the animus is an eternal, inherited archetype of the collective unconscious, it is also influenced the context of one’s life, culture and personal relationships with the opposite sex. Therefore, it is both an archetypal image that possesses a degree of autonomy, such that it cannot be wholly integrated into consciousness, and a personal complex. The animus is best thought of as a kind of psychopomp or guide to the unconscious, formulating the bridge between a woman’s ego and the Self, the psychological totality of her being. According to Jung, “If the encounter with the shadow is the ‘apprentice-piece’... then that with the anima [or animus] is the ‘master-piece.’” (Carl Jung, C.W. Vol 9. Part I. Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious)
A woman possessed by the animus will develop emotionally charged, ‘sacred’ convictions and critical judgements, inflicted either against herself, causing deep feelings of inferiority, or indiscriminately against others. She exhibits ‘. . . a priori assumptions that lay claim to absolute truth.’ (Jung, 1951, p.15) When challenged on her position, she becomes abrasive and dogmatic. Such convictions are never true to the reality of her personhood, and in fact threaten her feminine identity and her relationships, for the animus-possessed woman is gripped by an unconscious desire for power and control. This negative animus lures her away from life and encases her in fantasies of how things should be. It can also manifest as a destructive attitude. According to Marie Louise Von Franz, the animus shares the primitive propensity of man as hunter, capable of murdering life for a woman. If the animus robs her of all life and leaves her in a state of emotional paralysis, she may become a vampire who sucks the life from others. This is quite unlike the anima, which serves to enhance life. In fairytales, such a negative animus may appear as the personification of death itself.
“Just as the mother influence is formative with a man's anima, the father has a determining influence on the animus of a daughter. The father imbues his daughter's mind with the specific coloring conferred by those indisputable views mentioned above, which in reality are so often missing in the daughter. For this reason, the animus is also sometimes represented as a demon of death. A gypsy tale, for example, tells of a woman living alone who takes in an unknown handsome wanderer and lives with him in spite of the fact that a fearful dream has warned her that he is the king of the dead. Again and again she presses him to say who he is. At first he refuses to tell her, because he knows that she will then die, but she persists in her demand. Then suddenly he tells her he is death. The young woman is so frightened that she dies. Looked at from the point of view of mythology, the unknown wanderer here is clearly a pagan father and god figure, who manifests as the leader of the dead (like Hades, who carried off Persephone). He embodies a form of the animus that lures a woman away from all human relationships and especially holds her back from love with a real man. A dreamy web of thoughts, remote from life and full of wishes and judgments about how things "ought to be," prevents all contact with life. The animus appears in many myths, not only as death, but also as a bandit and murderer, for example, as the knight Bluebeard, who murdered all his wives.” Marie Louise von Franz, The Animus, a Woman's Inner Man.
The animus becomes a valuable inner companion for a woman only once she is able to differentiate between the thoughts and opinions of this autonomous complex, and what she herself really thinks. To become familiar with the nature of her animus, she must create distance between herself and her convictions and look upon them with a critical eye. Manifest positively, the animus provides her with qualities of initiative, creative action, objectivity and spiritual wisdom. In his highest form, he is the incarnation of meaning.
“Just as the anima becomes, through integration, the Eros of consciousness, so the animus becomes a Logos; and in the same way that the anima gives relationship and relatedness to a man’s consciousness, so the animus gives to a woman’s consciousness a capacity for reflection, deliberation and self-knowledge.” Carl Jung, C.W. Vol 9. Part II: Aion. The Syzygy: Anima and Animus
Anima and Animus The archetype of the Anima/Animus forms a bridge between our personal unconscious, our personal unconscious and what Jung refers to as the Collective Unconscious. The anima/animus is the image making capacity which we use to draw inspirational, creative and intuitive images from the inner world (strictly speaking transpersonal inner world).

I feel like during the thirty years between Eda being cursed and meeting Luz, there was more apprehension between mother and daughter than there was between sisters; At least that's the vibe I got. Obviously a lot of this can be attributed to Eda and Gwen having a very different dynamic than Eda and Lilith, because Gwen was an authority figure in Eda's childhood, which translates to her being perceived as a pestering, disapproving mother in adulthood.
Tumblr media
Whereas with Lilith, even though Lily technically had seniority over Eda, Eda definitely had more agency between the two, taking the lead a lot more, which as we know contributed further to Lilith's whole complex. Plus they're sisters so they still remember being kids who got into mutual dumb fun and antics together. On another level, while Lilith and Gwen both expressed disapproval towards Eda during the thirty years, I think Eda took Gwen's to heart much more personally because it was over the curse, something she was much more insecure about (esp post-Raine breakup), whereas with her chosen wild witch lifestyle, Eda had zero regrets.
So even if Lilith was much more openly disparaging at times, it couldn't get to Eda like Gwen's well-intentioned efforts did, plus again; Gwen is Eda's mom and kids are typically more anxious about approval from parents than from siblings, especially when Eda didn't care for Lilith's approval on account of admittedly not respecting her that much. Lilith eventually DID offer to heal Eda's curse once Belos started promising post-series premiere, but the habit had only just begun and she backed off the first time, and when she tried again that was also when Luz got threatened, and we saw how enraged Eda was up until Lilith changed for her.
I just find it interesting how without even meaning to, Gwen hits so much closer to home than Lilith ever did with her explicit jabs; Because they're poking at different aspects of Eda that she has different levels of confidence about, and there's a different power dynamic in each relationship too. Gwen didn't have any sway over Eda by adulthood, but her role as a larger figure would've still been ingrained in Eda growing up, just as Lilith being an equal, sometimes subconsciously lower, peer was.
Hence, Eda wanting to bring things back to good old times with Lilith and how they used to be troublemaking partners in crime and Lily could only follow, never stop her, whereas with her mother, not so much when Gwen was much more effective at imposing rules in Eda's childhood, and as an adult, that was traded out for a whole 'nother issue. By the end of the day, Eda did react to Lilith with initial hostility in S1 before defaulting back to old dynamics, so I wonder if during the thirty-year gap, there were ever encounters with her mother that weren't all bad and even a little comforting? Like when Gwen learned King was adopted.
And though we did see Lilith did take potshots at Eda's curse from time to time, I also think that with Eda and Gwen, Eda always subconsciously relied on her parents to be nurturing, supportive figures, so it felt like a particularly stinging betrayal when Gwen made her feel ashamed over the curse; Whereas again, Eda always kinda downplayed and underestimated Lilith's vitriol as siblings being siblings, unaware of how there was legit resentment. So Eda was less dependent on Lilith's support on account of recognizing herself as the more forward one, and thus less hurt (at least until Agony of a Witch) VS a parent whose approval meant more...
Plus I think Gwen's obsession was linked to Dell being disabled by the curse and Eda knew it, so it felt like she'd already lost one parent, and now the other one was blaming her for it, thereby exacerbating Eda's particular guilt over all that and making Gwen's attempts to help feel so much more damaging. Meanwhile Lilith was less linked to their parents, which was also another big factor in her complex.

acotar makes me so mad sometimes, and not for all the problematic parts, but for the way there's such a bare bone world building in place 4.5 books later and there could be some seriously amazing and creative and colorful world building potential
acotar has so many vibrant colors and characters and aesthetics but if u scratch the surface and chip away the paint there's so many holes and a lack of creativity in terms of complex characters or complex relationships. The side characters who have created different complexes and trauma in characters don't even have names
I was really hoping to learn more about Nestas past and growth and healing from an incredibly traumatic childhood by her mother only to get.... that
Mama Archeron is a cold, imperious woman who caused so much damage and devastation in her daughters and we don't have her name. I think it would have been so interesting to see something similar with her that I've seen with Cora from OUaT and yet Nothing but more trauma for Nesta and nothing for Nesta to come to terms with
Cassians mom, Azriel’s mom, Luciens mom, Papa Archeron, a SINGLE last name for an IC member
it feels like she keeps adding to the world building (which yay I always enjoy a good world building 🤌🏻) but then doesn't go back and build on things that still have gaping holes. Has Feyre ever once talked to her sisters about the promise that was imposed on her from her mom??
Rhys relationship with his mom and sister. Cassians relationship with Rhys' mom and sister and how those two women and their deaths affected him
idk what I'm really trying to say rn but it feels like,,, there's so much missing in the World Building for the sake of smut and romance but... at the same time she tries to insert commentary on important social issues and then contradicts herself

The Rookie and allowing women to fuck up
So what I genuinely love about The Rookie, is that in a show where you’d expect the opposite our female characters are diverse, complex, and extremely human. Each one of our main three have their different strengths, weaknesses, triumphs and honestly what is the most important to me, their fuck ups.
Starting with Lucy Chen (the character I relate to the most): Lucy is such a good character to me because her strength has always been presented as her empathy, her ability to put herself in anyone’s shoes is what makes so good. Her traditionally feminine trait is seen as a strength by everyone who knows her. BUT Lucy also fucks up, she makes mistakes. She’ll overthink things to the point of paralysis. She was fully prepared to, and was willing to cheat on Chris with Tim, and then stayed with him for months out of guilt and fear. Lucy fucks up! She makes huge mistakes. Which is what makes her such a good character. Lucy will make impulsive choices, she’ll try and solve things without consulting others (Metro), and she’ll think she was right. Lucy will read things incorrectly and she’ll react badly, but she’s the most empathetic, kind, adorable person.  She’s human as hell.  Next: the one, the only Nyla Harper: Nyla is such a good flawed character, because she also thrives at some of the same things Lucy does. Nyla is a rockstar UC detective, Lucy also thrives at UC, but holy shit these two women are not the same. Nyla’s skills and strength do not come from her sense of empathy. Nyla’s skill at UC come with her ruthlessness. Her ability to create a shell around her so impenetrable that people just don’t know the real her. Nyla is so professional, and so competent, and her personal life is a goddamn mess, for a while. She’s bad at opening up. She did choose UC over her family and had to fight tooth and nail to get her daughter back. When she finally did, and her life calmed down, she dated two guys cause she wanted the attention! She was cruel to Aaron because it was for his own good (she thought she knew best). She used Penelope’s past against her, which was an objectively fucked up thing to do, but it was human and it was a *mother’s* move.  Next: Angelaaaaaa Loooopeezzzz Angela is such a good character y’all. She’s someone we’ve seen put on so many different hats. Her TO’ing was different than Tim’s, Talia’s, or Nyla’s, she was Jackson’s older sister. She taught him, she didn’t wash Jackson out on his first day. She looked out for this kid. But also Angela wanted desperately to make detective, her failed tip trading scheme was her going too big. She was overconfident, and it cost her. But she was a badass, she just kept trying. But also we’ve seen Angela be insecure, in her relationship with Wesley, with her mother, and as a mother. Angela Lopez is a badass, but she is so so so soft sometimes. And she’s not perfect, her single minded devotion to catching Elijah, her need to *the* person protecting her family. So many fuck ups there. So many better ways to handle it. But she didn’t, and that’s what makes her Angela. and OH a woman on television being allowed to have realistic views on having another kid. Angela was allowed to be hesistant and not excited about being pregnant again, and no one thought she was being a villain or being terrible. She was scared about her life changing *again* and that was okay. She’s So Human.

Syd pulls Carmy's biggest smile in S2 while talking about the Trauma that was New York.
Carmy: The first ten seconds felt like a sort of panic cause I knew I just had to keep them, I had to retain them. Your brain does this weird thing where it just bypasses any sense of joy. It just like attaches itself to dread.
(2x2)
Chef: Why do you hire fսcking idiots? Do you like working with fսcking idiots?
Carmy: I'll do better.
Chef: Say "yes, Chef."
Carmy: Yes, Chef.
Chef: Can you not handle this? Is it too much for you? Answer me.
Carmy: I can handle it.
Chef: I can handle it, Chef.
Carmy: I can handle it, Chef.
Chef: Why are you serving broken sauces? Why? I get it. You have a short man's complex. You can barely reach over this fսcking table, right? Is this why you have the tattoos and your cool little scars, and you go out you take your smoke breaks? It's fun, isn't it? But, here's the thing. You're terrible at this. You're no good at it. Go faster, mοthеrfսckеr. Keep going faster. Why are you so slow? Why are you so fսcking slow? Why? You think you're so tough. Yeah. Why don't you say this? Say "yes, Chef, I'm so tough."
Carmy: Yes, Chef. I'm so tough.
Chef: Say "fսcking yes, Chef. I'm so tough."
Carmy: Yes, Chef. I'm so tough.
Chef: You are not tough. You are bullshit. You are talentless. You should be dead.
(1x2)
Carmy: I just have trouble breathing sometimes, and I wake up screaming. I know tons of people that cry out of nowhere.
Nat: When did the breathing problem start?
Carmy: I think maybe sometime in New York. I was throwing up every day before work. I kind of dug it.
Nat: You dug throwing up?
Carmy: No, no, no, it was awful. Chef was a piece of shit.
(1x2)
---
Carmy pulls Syd's biggest laugh and smile in S2 while talking about the Trauma of her dead mom.
Emmanuel: You okay?
Syd: It's weird, you know. I think I like...I don't know. I just realized I'm, like, older than her now, you know?
(2x2)
Syd stares longingly at a young mother and daughter while eating a sundae alone
(2x3)
Syd: Well, to answer your question I-I don't really have a great relationship with my...um...she's dead. She died. I could have probably said that a bit smoother. Yeah, she died when I was like four. Lupus.
Carmy: I feel...I'm sorry. I feel like I should have known that or something.
Sydney: No. Don't, don't, don't, don't. Don't do the... that thing. The, like..."I'm sorry for your loss" thing. It's okay, it happened a while ago, and, you know, I don't know. I was young. Whatever.

An Analysis of Aegon Targaryen ll's relationship with family from my fic that no one asked for
(Obviously, this is my take on Aegon based on my own fic, also kind of spoilers if you haven't read)
For the first 13 years of his life, Aegon really couldn't care too much about Helaena, he just saw her as his weird little sister. There were moments of love such as when he handed her a beetle in Driftmark but those were few and far between.
"He passively stretched out his hand, demonstrating a black beetle. Helaena looked as if she wanted to jump in place. She excitedly took the creature from Aegon’s hand and caressed its shell. (1)"
However, something happened in Driftmark that changed him forever. Aemond lost his eye. And Aegon failed to save his brother because he was drunk.
Aegon seemingly understood and put down his goblet. “Very well, but I’ll be drinking some fine wine later tonight. (1)”
Up until that point, Aegon tolerated his siblings but now his own carelessness had resulted in Aemond being hurt. His protectiveness toward his siblings was triggered that night.
"Aegon’s face darkened. His shoulders tensed as he clenched his jaw. Aemond had rarely seen his brother so upset. “That’s not fair! Jace called Aemond a Green!” Aegon suddenly spoke out. (2)"
Now as a grown man, Aegon has stopped drinking. He is married to Helaena and they have twins. He loves his children but retains feelings of self-hatred that sometimes come out in his interactions with them.
"Jaehaerys who was born first had Helaena’s lilac eyes. Meanwhile, Jaehaera who was born next had his eyes. The color was just a shade darker, but he could tell from the moment he saw her. He didn’t know what to feel when he saw those eyes. Her smile was her mother’s, but he regretted that his blood gave her his eyes.(3)"
He loves Jaehaera but she unfortunately inherited his eyes and he hates that. He adores his daughter and despises that she took on his features. He doesn't see himself in the greatest light and her looking like him crushes him because he feels she shouldn't look like him. Jaehaera is sweet, innocent, and good which Aegon feels he is not.
His relationship with Helaena is also complex. Given that he was raised alongside her and surrounded by the traditional Targaryen beliefs, he was aware that siblings married but he didn't think they would. Aegon has always seen Helaena as his little sister in the non-Targaryen way. Even after they married (for reasons I can't spoil yet) Aegon still sees her as his sister, not a romantic partner. Due to his protectiveness following Driftmark, he will sometimes display what others think are romantic gestures.
"With his other hand, he cupped her cheek.(3)"
"Aegon took her hand and cradled it.(3)"
However, he simply does these things platonically. In the example of his holding her hand, he knows Helaena likes certain physical gestures. And with his touch of her cheek, it's his trying to snap her out of her dragon dreams because she goes into a dissociative state. While they clearly have evidence of their consummation, Aegon can't see her as his wife. The idea of her being his wife is simply a title to him. While he realistically does recognize that they are married, to him she's his sister first. An example of this is when they briefly talk about their wedding.
“That child may have grown but he still cares about his little sister.(3)”
He purposely calls her "his little sister" and not "his wife". It could be seen as a way of him putting a distance between them but that's not the case to Aegon. To him, loving Helaena as a sister is more meaningful than loving her as a wife and this goes into Aegon's own issues with the idea of romantic partners in general.
When he was thirteen years old Aegon and his family were forced to flee King's Landing, effectively becoming traitors. Since then, he has been running for six years of his life only surrounded by his two brothers, younger sister, and mother. Due to this, he’s never truly developed a bond with someone outside his family. If he ever possibly began to care for someone romantically it wouldn’t have lasted. Aegon knew that because of how often his family has to move around he didn't try to develop any other relationships. To him, love was never a realistic option. Helaena is the closest he’ll ever have to that type of bond but as previously mentioned he doesn't feel that way with her. Despite this, he takes his marriage with Helaena seriously.
“I promised you that when we took our vows.(3)”
In conclusion, Aegon is a complicated person and things will only get more complicated when the dance begins. No one asked for this but I love explaining characters.

✰ i want the devil tonight: when natasha's latest mission is to identify all of the vigilantes in new york, she shows you the file she has on your boyfriend so you can tell him about it, warn him. little did she know, the sight of matt in his old suit would awaken something deep inside you: a visceral attraction you couldn't quite contain. and you were definitely going to do something about it. (part 1) (part 2)
✰ i loved the present and i love you: your birthday isn't your favorite holiday. damn, you don't even celebrate it properly and you weren't precisely looking forward to it. however, this year you have Matt and he won't let it go unnoticed. at least you will notice.
✰ delicate: matt's midnight visits to your apartment aren't rare, so you never question them. sometimes, he wants his favorite unpaid surgeon to patch him up and do the stitches; other times, he wants your touch, your loving, your attention, and affection. now, after willingly losing his friends to his reckless fears and the terrible-friend reputation of his, he only has you: someone who likes him for him.

❁ tell me what are my words worth (series): while the other ladies have grown with the mindset of marrying and having children, you, as the daughter of a man who wanted a son, grew up being both. you learnt how to embroider, play the pianoforte, fence and manage the estate. however, there were some things that not even the duke of burgundy could do, so after he passed and you thought there was nothing left for you, you decided to move to london for a while and go to the royal academy of art. nothing was going to keep you from what you wanted, and you would do whatever it takes: you would lie to everyone, you would live to death, you would pretend to be a man. you had a plan and it would be a piece of cake for you. but again, when has something that she wants and should not do easy for a woman? especially when a man like benedict bridgerton gets in the way in more ways than one.
❁ gold rush (mini series): you have loved benedict bridgerton since you first met him, but after anthony married, he became the ton's favorite bridgerton, and now that everybody wants him, you realized you don't like a gold rush. (part 1) (part 2) (part 3) (part 4) (part 5)
❁ these colors fade for you only: one thing worse than seeing your enemy often was living under the same roof, certainly, and you and benedict suffered from that unfortunate condition. not even the eleven years you've slept separated by a thin wall only helped you overcome that hatred, you would always hate each other. or not really, because it's too definite to say something as such when a few hours could change the meaning of until the end of time.

❁ tarnished but so grand: you, your mother, and younger sisters were left to your own devices after your father's death with no one to take care or provide for you. thankfully, high society's ties were always useful, and you got an interview with none other than viscount anthony bridgerton for the job of his sister's governess. and yes, he could have expected about anything except to fall for you in such invasive, magnificently cursed manner when he was supposed to be looking for his very own wife. Ollie Chen and Prejudice
Tumblr media
Ollie/Oliver Chen is a character that was first introduced in the first episode of Season 2 ¨The New (Para) Normal¨ along with the rest of the Chen family. The Chens become the Mcgees’ new neighbours and instanly click with them thanks to sharing things in common with them. All appears to be going well until Ollie reveals to Molly something shocking: Their family are ghosthunters. This established what would Molly and Ollie’s dynamic in the episodes that followed and the complex journey that Ollie goes through understanding ghosts through out season 2-A. In this post i’m going to talk about Ollie’s character arc, where his hatred of ghosts comes from and how he changes his mind about them later on.
Being born in a family of ghosthunters, Ollie was brought up to believe that all ghosts are evil monsters that should be contained or eliminated. He believes that by capturing ghosts, he is protecting people and making the world a better place. In his mind he thinks that he is some sort of hero who is saving others from ghosts.
Just like Molly, Ollie really cares about helping his local community and wants the best for everyone. The main difference between them is that he struggles seeing ghosts as ¨people¨. Because he doesn’t fully understand them, he treats them as his enemy, instead of something that just happens to be a different. As Molly puts it ¨He is afraid of what he doesn’t understand¨ (Book Marks the Sprite).
In ¨Book Marks the Sprite¨ it gets explores where Ollie’s hatred for ghosts comes from: When his father, Ruben, was a kid; he was attacked by a ghost. This bad (and possible traumatic) experience lead Ruben to believe that all ghost are evil and they deserved to stopped.
Tumblr media
Ruben passed this hatred of ghosts to Ollie and his daughter, June. Ollie often talks about being proud of following his father ¨legacy¨ even if other people make fun of them for believing that ghosts exist. Being a ghosthunter is important for Ollie’s identity and he wants to prove to others the existence of ghosts.
In the song sequence ¨Ghost Aren’t the Enemy¨ (Book Marks the Sprite) Molly thinks about this strange contradiction between Ollie being so kind to those who are living but cruel to undead beings. She finds it hard to get why someone who appears to be a good person hates those she considers her friends.
In a way, Ollie shares parallels to people in real life who are taught to see certain groups as bad just because they happen to be different. It can be because they live in a specific place, they have different sexuality or different lifestyle. It’s the idea of these people are ¨x thing¨ because they aren’t like ¨us¨. It’s also the lack of information or misinformation that leads to the general population to held questionable to dangerous ideas and how that can be passed down from generation to generation. Sometimes for some people it is easier to fear something than trying to understand it.
Tumblr media
Molly believes that she can persuade Ollie into changing his mind about ghosts. She thinks that the Chens aren’t a real threat until near the end of ¨I Wanna Dance with Some-Ollie¨ when she finds Scratch stuck inside a ghost trap and frees it from it. This motivated Molly to cut her relationship with Ollie since it could put Scratch in danger. While all this was happening, Molly and Scratch didn’t pick up that Ollie was seeing them talk to each other and found out that Molly had a ghost as a friend. Until that point Ollie didn’t get why Molly didn’t want them to be couple, seeing Scratch made him realize what was the reason.
Tumblr media
What is so interesting about the ending of ¨I Wanna Dance with Some-Ollie¨ is that Ollie didn’t tell his mother about Scratch and instead told her that Molly was ¨walking home with a friend¨. It was in that moment he started to have doubts over what he has been taught to believe about ghosts his whole life. It was probably one of the few times he saw a real ghost and that this ghost wasn’t acting evil like he had expected him to be.
Of course, because prejudiced ideas take more time change, for a while Ollie convinced himself that Molly was under the spell casted by Scratch instead of thinking that they both were friends. In ¨Frightmares on Main Street¨ he decided to do a deeper research to find out what was the true nature of the relationship between Molly and Scratch.
In part it could be said that Ollie was suffering from cognitive dissonance in ¨Frightmares on Main Street¨, meaning he was having two ideas in his mind that contradicted each other: ¨All ghost are evil¨ and ¨Molly is friend with a ghost¨. In his own denial, he jumped to the conclusion that Molly was cursed by Scratch somehow, it couldn’t be that ghosts could be friendly.
Tumblr media
So, when Ollie went inside the haunted house and saw all the ghosts scaring other people, reasonably panicked. He had never seen so many ghosts in one place before. Before he tried doing anything, Molly explained to him that Scratch and she were friends and the ghosts hanging out in the haunted mansion were trying to have fun because it was Halloween. While Molly was trying to explain Ollie all this, Ollie remained nervous but somewhat open to listen. The best way to describe it was him being confused by the ghost being friendly instead of agressive and evil.
After the Chens showed up in the festival to catch ghosts, Ollie trapped Scratch in a sticky substance, still holding to the idea that Scratch was evil. He interrogated him and Scratch explained to him the same that Molly had told him before: That he and Molly were friends. In that moment Ollie came with terms that yes, he was wrong about Scratch and he was Molly’s friend even if he didn’t understand it.
A scene worth of mentioning is that when June showed up and almost blasted Scratch, Ollie asked her to not to since he was ¨interrogating the ghost¨ and made June leave. Despite of being confused, Ollie knew that Scratch was important to Molly and he couldn’t let him to be hurt.
Tumblr media
Moments later Molly showed up and had a big argument with Ollie about his hatred of ghosts. Ollie was still trying to grasp to those beliefs until Molly told him that he ¨didn’t know anything about real ghosts.¨ It was that phrase that made Ollie stop arguing and think about how he never had never met a real ghost or talked to one before while Molly had a lot more of experience with ghosts than he did. That, in reality, he barely knew what ghosts were like and that he had was things that his father had told him to believe.
Tumblr media
In the worst moment possible, the frightmares showed up. Molly asked Ollie to free Scratch so he could stop them with his chairman powers. Molly told Ollie that ¨ghost are like people¨ and some are good and others are bad, which it was a more realistic and easier statement for Oliver to believe in while he was still confused on what action he should take. Since he was able to see Scratch as one of the ¨friendly ghosts¨, Ollie freed him from the sticky sustance and allowed him to stop the frightmares. After the issue was solved, Ollie freed Geoff and Jeff, who have been previously trapped by Esther and Ruben and apologized for assuming that all ghosts were evil.
Tumblr media
Ollie shows up again later in ¨The Unhaunting of Brighton Video¨ trying to make up for his past actions and help the ¨Ghost Friends¨ team with saving and assisting ghosts in need. In the whole episode Scratch gives him a hard time due to his past as ghost hunter, making Ollie harder to avoid thinking about the things he did.
Tumblr media
When they find Blair haunting the video store, Ollie relates to Blair’s fear of not wanting to confront her past and joins her, telling the rest of the team to leave him alone. In part it was a good progress for Ollie to be friendly with Blair and hanging out with her, even if this caused some issues for the team temporarily.
Tumblr media
The ¨Ghost Friends¨ team returns and Molly asks Ollie is he is having some issue that he isn’t telling them. Ollie breaks down crying about how he feels guilty for being wrong about ghosts and how he tried to hurt them. It’s easy to see that it has been hard for him to come in terms with this since it was part of his identity. Molly cheers him up by saying that is good that he is now trying to be a better person and that’s what it is important.
Tumblr media
Blair relates to how Ollie feels and decides to explain her backstory: When she was a human, she had a favorite movie that she never returned to the video store and she was never able to give it back because she died before she was able to do so. Ollie comforts Blair by telling her that is okay to feel guilty and the Ghost Friends team helps her with finishing her unfinished business and setting her free.
In conclusion: While Ollie started as ghost hunter, with help of Molly and a bit of Scratch’s, over time he was able to learn that ghost weren’t evil and let go of those misinformed views he had about them. Now he is trying his best to understand ghosts and help those that are lost and have unfinished business in their afterlifes. He can’t change the way that he was raised in but he can chose to be a better person and learn from his past mistakes.
