summary: Following a bad breakup and an overdose, TK Strand starts to reevaluate his life with the help of his therapist and he realizes the relationship with his father isn’t healthy… for either of them. Concerned that he might relapse due to his father’s over-involvement in his life and needing a fresh start, he decides to relocate to Austin, TX. author’s note: this is not an anti-Owen Strand blog or fic

Something he likes about his therapist is that she never pressures him to talk if he doesn’t want to. Unfortunately, this means a lot of their sessions consist of them staring at each other, waiting for someone to break the silence - like now. He knows what he wants to say, what he has to say, but he’s scared because voicing it to another person makes it more real and means he actually has to follow through. Right now, he doesn’t know if this is something he actually wants because it’s such a big step, but he knows this is something he needs if he wants to get better.
“I think I need to start over.” He lets out a deep breath, because it’s like a weight has been lifted from his chest. TK slowly shifts his attention from the flower painting hanging behind his therapist’s head to her warm brown eyes.
Is it weird for him to think she seems more motherly than his own mother? Maybe that’s another issue of his that he needs to bring up… with a different therapist.
“Okay.” She nods slowly and adjusts her notebook so it’s balancing on her knee, which gets his anxiety spiking but before he can say something, she starts talking again. “What does starting over look like for you?”
In the two weeks he had been thinking about what he needed, he had never gotten into the planning stages. He knows he needs to start over, but he doesn’t know what that looks like or where to begin.
“I just…” He sighs, tearing his gaze away from her, choosing to look outside at the Manhattan traffic which seems way less chaotic than his life feels. “I love my dad,” he says, still refusing to look at her, “but ever since I overdosed, he has been a lot to deal with.”
That’s not entirely true and TK knows it, so does Dr. Cohen because she’s the one who very gently pointed out that their relationship went beyond a normal father-son bond. Why she would point this out when Owen is paying her bills, he doesn’t know; maybe she pointed it out because she cares more about his well-being than her paycheck.
“I know he loves me and just wants to make sure I’m safe.” But he’s an adult with a career, an apartment, a drug addiction, and a codependent relationship. It’s too much to deal with, and now that he’s aware of their codependency issues it’s a lot harder to ignore all the ways Owen violates his privacy for the sake of “protecting” him.  “Sometimes, he makes me want to relapse.”
At this, he chooses to look over at her to see if she gives a hint as to what she’s thinking or how she feels about him saying he thinks about relapsing because of their relationship, but her expression is blank.
“What does he do?”
What doesn’t he do? He shows up at his apartment uninvited and with no warning, which is bad in and of itself but it’s made worse when TK has a guy over.
“One time, he went through my apartment to make sure I didn’t have drugs.” This had happened about three months ago, after he had overdosed for the first time in years, and at the time he had made excuses for him and downplayed his own feelings. Now, he’s angry at himself because he allowed him to violate his privacy in such a monumental way, and he wishes he had brought it up to Dr. Cohen when it had happened instead of brushing it off as “not a big deal.”
More recently, Owen has shown up at his workplace which would have been fine if he had at least asked or given him a heads up, but he didn’t. “Before my overdose, he would always show up to my work unannounced and it was fine, but now it seems like he’s invading my privacy.” He shrugs slightly and slowly meets her gaze. “Maybe I’m making a big deal out of nothing.”
“What you’ve just told me are very obvious privacy violations,” she says, flashing him a small smile that is gone as quick as it came. “I can’t imagine anyone who would be okay with these things happening to them.”
TK focuses on a stain on the floor, mulling over her words and trying to decide if she’s right about him not overreacting. “I’ve tried talking to him about these things,” he mutters, seemingly to himself because his eyes are still trained on the stain. Is it a coffee stain? He hasn’t ever seen her drink coffee during their sessions though. “He didn't… he told me he was just worried about me and that any parent in his shoes would do the same thing.”
Maybe he shouldn’t have brought this up because it’s draining to think about, let alone talk about, and he’s starting to get the feeling that she might be judging him. He can’t say she would be wrong to judge him; he’s an adult who lacks any sort of independence from his father and sometimes he judges himself for that.
“Your father is very prone to… ignoring boundaries, as we’ve discussed in previous sessions, and that is not your fault.”
She pauses, taking a deep breath and shifting in her seat, and this gets him to look up at her instead of the stain. What kind of stain is it?
“I don’t know your father but I think he sees his actions as normal, healthy behaviors so when you confronted him, suggesting they weren’t, he chose to double down instead of consider the possibility that he has been unintentionally harming you.” She pauses again and he thinks she’s giving him time to process her words, but he’s not quite sure. “I think your father can’t let himself consider that possibility because based on our conversations, he has made keeping you safe and alive his primary purpose in life.”
He wants to object, to point out that Owen is a firefighter and that is his primary purpose in life: to save other people, not his family. But he knows that isn’t true and hasn’t been true since his first overdose eight years ago.
Instead of commenting on Owen’s other behaviors or acknowledging what she said, he chooses to do what he does best when the current topic starts to be too much for him to handle: change topics.
“I just think I need to start over.” He sinks into the plush chair and pops the string of his hoodie into his mouth, which reminds him he should invest in one of those fidget toys he sees his students with so he can stop ruining his $30 hoodies when he gets anxious.
“Why do you think you need to start over?”
Another thing he loves about her is that she handles his topic changes smoothly and doesn’t force him to talk about shit he doesn’t want to; he’s given the freedom to process his problems at his pace, not hers.
“I love this city,” he states, glancing out the window to watch the traffic again. “But if I don’t leave, I don’t think I’ll ever get a shot at being my own person,” he pauses and looks back at her, a frown tugging at his lips when he says, “or recovering.”
Owen is trying his best when it comes to dealing with all of his baggage, he knows this, but it’s too much sometimes and as much as he hates to think it, his dad threatens his recovery more than helps it.
“You said it yourself in our third session,” he starts, leaning toward her, propping his elbows up on his knees, “we’re codependent.” TK pops his hoodie string back in his mouth as he thinks over his next words, trying to figure out what he’s wanting to say. “We need space,” is what he finally comes up with, blurting it out the second it comes to mind.
For a few minutes, the only sound in the room is the ticking of the analog clock that sits on her desk, and he’s not sure if she’s wanting him to say more or she’s trying to figure out what to say. Then, she speaks.
“And you think relocating is the best way for you to get space?” She sounds skeptical which gets his anxiety going and he starts chewing on his string again, worrying that he voiced the wrong solution to his problems and upset her.
Truth be told, he doesn’t know what to do to get out of this rut he feels he’s in, because every decision he comes up with he feels is the wrong one but moving is the one idea that doesn’t seem bad. He wants to scream but he’s not sure how that will help the situation, so he stays quiet until she speaks again.
“Walk me through it, TK. How do you think relocating will help your recovery, your relationship with Owen, and other issues in your life?” She doesn’t sound angry, she sounds like she genuinely wants to understand his thought process, but he still feels like a child who is being forced to explain his decisions so he can understand how idiotic it is.
“I just can’t juggle my job, my recovery, and a dad who is too invested to the point that I want to relapse,” he says, flinching a bit at how loud he spoke. He wants to scream but he’s not sure how that will help anything and it might just make her kick him out, even though they still have thirty minutes left and the session was paid in advance.
“Everywhere I look I’m reminded of what I don’t have, what I lost.” He pulls his foot up into his lap, picking at a chunk of dried dirt on the sole. “When we broke up, I lost my friends because they were his friends first.”
The only friend he has is the fifty-year-old German librarian at his school, but it’s a stretch to call her his friend because he sees her more as a grandmother figure than someone he’s going to watch the 15th installment of Fast & Furious with.
“I love my students.” This year he’s teaching freshman English and they’re not quite as bold in how they address him like his senior class was the year before, but he still enjoys teaching them. He loves hearing their feedback on each unit and their thoughts on how he should make it better for the next class or year and he enjoys reading their essays on the books they’re forced to read because his students are funny and a little mean.
“I love the Jewish bakery on 7th because they make the best bagels and lox.” He has been going to their bakery every morning before school for four years now and he knows the family quite well, but the most they know about him is that his name is TK and he likes sesame seed bagels and iced caramel coffee. It’s weird, because he knows their only daughter died in a car accident three years ago and they’re raising their 9-year-old grandson, and that Mr. Goldstein went into remission three weeks ago. It’s not because they haven’t tried to get to know him, though. They have, but he has shut them out because he doesn’t want them to get too close or they might realize he’s a fuck up.
“I love my Iranian neighbor.” She was the first one to welcome him with a plate of an Iranian dish he can’t remember the name of and a warm hug when he moved into the apartment complex. When he realized she was alone he started visiting her. Every Saturday, they go to the park to watch the birds then they stop by the market so she can stock up on groceries. She teaches him her family recipes and her language, and in exchange he offers her his company which he knows she appreciates because of the way her face lights up when she sees him. No one has visited her in five years and his heart aches to think that she will be alone if he leaves.
He sighs, flopping back in the chair and focusing his attention on a crack in the ceiling. “I can’t go to the Italian restaurant on 4th anymore because that’s where I proposed.” It’s not like he’s banned from the restaurant, he just feels like throwing up every time he passes by the storefront because he’s reminded of the worst and most embarrassing moment of his life.
It’s not just the restaurant, though.
It’s the spin cycle place where Alex used to go and where he met the love of his life; it’s the Mediterranean place they’d eat lunch at on Tuesday; it’s the bookstore on 4th where they met; it’s his own apartment where they would steal kisses in the kitchen as they danced around each other trying to get dinner prepared, or the bedroom where Alex would spoon him while they watched old horror movies.
If it’s not reminders of Alex and the life they could’ve had if he hadn’t cheated, it’s reminders of his failed overdose and everything he has lost because of it.
“My job doesn’t know I’m an addict.” But they do know he isn’t a good fit for the school and isn’t able to perform his duties effectively anymore, so he’ll be out of a job at the end of the academic year. He can’t blame that entirely on his addiction though; the school has been looking for a reason to fire him since his first year when parents complained about him being openly gay. Unfortunately, he gave them the reason they had been looking for because after his overdose his job performance tanked to the point that his students were behind the rest of their grade and parents were, once again, complaining about him. (But at least this time it wasn’t about his sexuality.)
“I need to get out of here,” he whispers, closing his eyes and folding his hands across his stomach. “I need to start over somewhere new, somewhere I can be independent, somewhere I can focus on my recovery, somewhere I can… I don’t know.”
He just needs a fresh start in a new city where no one knows his name or his grocery list of fuck ups.

The Shamrock Social Club by @harryonstage
Somehow you land a consultation with Harry Styles, one of the most renowned tattoo artists on the west coast. He agrees to design your first tattoo and ink it on you himself, but over the course of your sessions together, mischief ensues…
This month’s featured story, The Shamrock Social Club, brought together avid Tumblr fic readers and Twitter stans alike in excitement and anticipation for each update. It tells the story of a girl determined to get a tattoo and her wildly attractive tattoo artist, Harry—fondly known as “tattoorry” among readers. Check out our amazing interview with the brilliant author behind this masterpiece below!
***
How long have you been writing for?
God, as long as I can remember. I have memories of being in middle school, feverishly writing stories in my composition notebook when I was supposed to be paying attention to the lesson. I was conjuring up elaborate worlds and characters long before I ever planned on sharing them with anybody—before I even realized what I was doing.
Do you have certain habits or rituals you have to do while writing?
A lot of my followers joke about this, but I do a lot of writing in the bath. I turn off all my notifications and commit not to check my texts for awhile, and I cannot write without a giant warm beverage, usually coffee or rooibos tea with honey. I put rainstorm sounds on my bluetooth speaker. The thesaurus app and google dictionary are open at all times. Also, part of the creative process definitely happens long before I ever actually sit down to write—I’m constantly jotting stuff down in the notes app on my phone if I’m out and about when I think of a line to work into a scene later. I have all these sticky notes with like cryptic, half-baked ideas all over my desk at work… I’ll pick one up and all it says is like “The clicks a skateboard makes rolling down the sidewalk” or “The feeling of having an orange peel beneath your fingernails.” And I refuse to throw them away, even if I have no idea what I was thinking at the time. I think most people who write do that to some degree, though.
The ever famous question: how did you come up with this idea?
Honestly I was on tumblr and saw a collage of women with dragon and snake tattoos. I began thinking about the type of person who would want that symbol on them forever, and why. Minutes later, I wrote that “Tattoo You, 1981” blurb on my masterlist—of course named after the Rolling Stones album released that year—and then that became the preliminary blueprint for what is now The Shamrock Social Club. I literally thought it was going to be a one shot at most, but here we are nearly fifty-two thousand words later.
Throughout your writing in this fic, you show a great deal of knowledge about the process of getting a tattoo. Is this from experience or something you learned from researching?
Both! I have a few tattoos. One of them is a stick-and-poke. It’s been awhile since I got my last one though, so I had to refresh myself on the aftercare process. I called the actual Shamrock Social Club a few times to gauge what a master tattoo artist there would charge for something as large as the snake. I also wanted to be sure it was possible for an artist to fill in a tattoo as they work through the outline the way Harry does in the story. The researching process of a fic writer is so funny to me… I wish my readers could see me alone in my room at 2:00 AM eating dry cereal, deeply invested in a fifteen minute Youtube video comparing different types of tattoo inks.
When does a story go from an idea in your mind to paper? Is there a process you go through before writing it out, or do you just get straight in it?
I have so much respect for the writers who can just like, wing it. I personally need to have a story mapped out in bullet points beginning to end before I even open up a new document on my computer. That way, I get more time to sit with it and meditate on how close to reality it seems, and it helps me finagle the order of events and decide if there’s any room for improvement. Also, if I think of a detail or subplot that’s not in my original outline, it’s easier to pop it in and visualize how it synthetically fits with the story.
In all four parts (51k words), not once do you give a name for the main character or call her ‘Y/N’. Was this a difficult task? What was the reason for it?
This is a hot topic right now in the fan fiction community! Sometimes it’s difficult, but I think it helped make the prose in this story more seamless to read. As someone who has written original characters as well as self-insert fics, I think a strong enough writer can make a character feel personable and unique and real without an elaborate backstory, and I don’t feel that it takes anything integral away from the creative process for me. If you can get an audience to root for a protagonist in a couple of chapters through their choices, dialogue, hopes, and motivations alone, to me that’s a much more successful story… I deeply respect writers who are like “write for yourself, not for others!” but that notion doesn’t really keep me up at night. To me, it’s obvious that I’m writing for myself if I’m writing at all, and I’m very comfortable with that fact. Imagine that you’re in school for creative writing and your professor gives you an exercise with a few simple parameters… it’s a bit like that. I still only write about exactly what I want, but undergoing the challenge of writing for an audience has 100% made me a better, more versatile writer. To me that does not feel like a loss, or a compromise. Plus, I think it’s such an interesting way to engage with a story—you are explicitly the protagonist, actively steering your own trajectory with every choice you make.
Was the character ‘AJ’ inspired by anyone you know in real life, AJ?
Guilty as charged. I do tend to Stan Lee myself and my friends into my fics. Aijia, Iz, Steph, Ellen… all of those characters are based on my actual friends. It started out as a joke—I literally just needed a name for the roommate character, but someone suggested I name her AJ and I was like… why not? I love having fun that costs nothing and hurts nobody! Annie and I wrote ourselves into Under the Same Roof, too.
This fic very delicately tells the story of a girl who’s been sexually abused in the past in some way and is on a determined mission to self-healing. A topic not many will brave, but you did. Why?
This is such a good question. Honestly I was on the fence at first. As I was drafting the first installment, Nobody Fucks with a Snake, I knew I wanted Harry’s character to turn her away from the shop at first before he decided to take a chance on her, but I needed a reason why. Like, I needed him to see a glimmer of something in her, and simply him being attracted to her didn’t feel compelling enough to me. I thought it would be really meaningful and it would raise the stakes a little if Harry saw this like… tenacity and determination in her. One of my favorite scenes in the whole story is that pivotal moment in his office when we see Harry really start to understand the gravity of her predicament and how much this snake means to her. He’s so affected by her vulnerability, and it speaks volumes about both of them.
In the drafting process, I was talking with my friend Tanvi who also writes fic, and she wanted to know if there was some reason why Harry’s character feels such a strong urge to help this young woman, and why he goes to such great lengths to respect consent throughout the story. Like, does he have a loved one who was sexually assaulted? Is this a more personal issue for him? I considered this, but truthfully, I thought this story would be so much more poignant and effective if there like, wasn’t some special reason. Consent is necessary. Sexual assault is inexcusable and wrong. It is as simple and as complicated as that.
What was it like writing on an issue that makes a lot of people uncomfortable (but is still so important)? Did you feel like you had a responsibility to fulfil?
As a writer, it’s an enormous responsibility to parse trauma and heaviness and sorrow in a way that doesn’t glorify the pain, especially if you have a younger audience. Most of my readers are in their twenties, like me. I read something recently about how it’s true that writers shouldn’t cover topics such as sexual trauma, eating disorders, or major depression as to avoid romanticizing any of these terrible, life-altering experiences, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to people who have been through these hardships and turn to art or writing as an outlet.
I have an eating disorder. It’s something I talk about openly on my blog—as an aside, you should definitely browse my recovery tag! Through fic, I’ve written about what it’s like to have an ED. I’ve also used fic to write about having a stalker, and in The Shamrock Social Club, of course I write about the complex relationship one has with sex and romance and dating in the aftermath of being sexually assaulted. I write to focus on the triumphs instead of the pain, and I always try to make these experiences awkward, ugly, and honestly gross when they need to be. Without divulging too much of myself online, I’m well equipped to know what all of those hardships feel like. In fact, I’ve read many stories, fan fiction and novels alike, that portray eating disorders, stalkers, and surviving sexual assault in a really misleading light, and I wanted to create something I felt like accurately represented how insidious and terrifying all of that actually is. Most of all, for me, writing this story was so much more about the main character overcoming her strife, and finally feeling like she has agency and control over her own body again. At its core, the Shamrock Social Club is really just the story of a fiercely determined young woman on her own path to healing, who happens to meet a boy along the way. The writing process was very, very cathartic.
Your story got popular not only on Tumblr but across Twitter as well in a short period of time—an amazing accomplishment. How did you react to your (well-deserving) popularity?
Jesus, the memes that have been born out of this story on twitter and tumblr are… beyond hilarious. And trust me, nobody lurks on twitter more than me. I don’t know if I would use the word “popular” about this story or even about myself though. To put things in perspective, suddenly being under a magnifying glass is still super strange and new to me. I literally had about 500 followers for most of the eight years I’ve been on tumblr until the end of 2018, which is when I started posting fic. I think about this all the time, I could write a dissertation on how baffling it is that people suddenly seem to give me heaps of attention and put me on this pedestal when deep down I know who I am and I know how tumblr works and I know it’s just as likely that people could be sending messages and giving praise to literally anyone else. Everybody has something to offer, I just got lucky. In the grand scheme of things, this story has only reached a very small pocket of the internet and there really isn’t anything about me that makes me more special than anyone else, I’m just a person who had a few people’s attention for a little while because I wrote a story. I’m very proud and grateful to have people reading my writing and it isn’t lost on me how fortunate I am that anyone does in the first place.
The one thing I will say though, is that it’s profoundly moving to me the amount of sexual assault survivors who have come forward in the wake of this story. Anonymously or not, people have been so open, and have shared so much of themselves with me. It’s amazing how alone you can be made to feel when you don’t have an example of someone who has been through the same struggle as you and come out the other side, even if it’s a fictional character, and I think this story ended up meaning a lot more to people than I ever expected it to. I can’t wrap my brain around how special it is that something I wrote could offer some small comfort to another person who has survived something so awful. The response this story has gotten blows me out of the water to this day.
Who came up with the name ’tattoorry’?
Honestly I don’t remember but “tattoorry” is shorthand for “tattoo artist Harry.”
Lastly, anything you’d like to say to anyone who read your fic?
Thank you for reading my writing. On principal, I think that if you find something that makes you happy and it’s not hurting anyone, then that’s worth celebrating. The people who have engaged with this story made into into something so much bigger and more special than I could’ve ever accomplished on my own.
Thank you very much, this was a lot of fun!

Thank you, AJ, for your time and dedication to these questions! Check out more of her work here!

8 months post op stage 1, 2 months post op stage 2
Hey all! Yesterday I was 2 months post stage 2 and 8 months post stage one (it’s rather convenient that they fall on the same day 😁) so I thought I’d do a super quick update.
As I mentioned previously, I think I’m fully recovered from stage 2. I’ve been working a lot recently (seems like everyone is getting the flu now 🙃) and my job is fairly physical, walking around and lifting/moving heavy boxes, and I’ve been just fine. Yesterday I got back into the gym which was nice. I started off pretty slow and I’ve definitely lost some strength since surgery, but that’s expected as I’ve not worked out for over 2 months. I’m really looking forward to not having surgery recovery getting in the way of my progress as it’s pretty annoying hitting milestones in my fitness only to have to try to hit them again because I’m forced out of the gym for months at a time!
Obviously though, that’s a super minor complaint and I will absolutely take that given how chuffed I am with everything else. I’ve been incredibly lucky with my surgery and recovery, and I’m so grateful for that. Although it hasn’t been an easy process, it’s been one of the hardest things I’ve had to go through, I’m definitely aware of how fortunate I’ve been given how complex this surgery is. I definitely went into the entire process planning for the worst but hoping the best. For me at least, surgery wasn’t an active choice I made, as I KNEW I would have to have this surgery in order to go forward with my life. No matter what happened or if I had complications, this is something I would have to do. I saw loads of stories when I was researching phalloplasty where things went terribly wrong, and I remember thinking that I’d do it, I’d take that if I could have a chance at eventually having a penis, I was so desperate for it. Of course I never wanted complications, but I definitely went into this whole thing prepared for the worst. This isn’t me trying to scare anyone off or anything, but just be aware the my experience isn’t standard, and to make sure you’re making an informed decision with the risks in mind. In saying that, Goossen is great and a very skilled surgeon, if you were to go with him you’re in excellent hands. I honestly think he’s one of the best in the world for this, and we are very lucky to have him.
Recovery wise, nothing much to report, but here are some little tidbits I’ve noticed and thought worth sharing.
Urinating is still going fine, and now I don’t feel like I’m going to pee on the floor which is nice. I don’t think I can feel it any more than before, but my brain is used to it. Still having no issues with peeing and I’m still drinking loads. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how cool it is, and how happy I am that this is my life now lol.
I’ve been massaging my arm a lot more recently and I’ve switched to a palmers cocoa butter lotion as it’s a lot easier to apply than the oils I was using. Because of this I’ve been massaging my scar a lot more than before as I used to put it off because of how much of a hassle it was being. I’ve noticed a difference in the softness of my graft, so I’m just gonna keep doing it. I’m looking into some more silicone products, but they’re so expensive so it’s hard to make an investment without any experience. I’ve had a good experience with cica care scar sheets though, so I’m hunting around to see if I can get them anywhere cheaper than work. My TSL sleeve is on its last legs- it’s gotten very loose and doesn’t compress my arm as much. I think I’m going to have to retire it soon. It was pretty helpful in the first few months post op and having the silicone imbedded was really convenient, but I won’t be buying another one. It was pretty expensive and I don’t think I can justify spending that again.
I’m happy with how my arm is looking, colour wise it still pretty much matches my normal skin colour. I have a few spots that are still a little hyperpigmented, but it is fading still. I don’t expect this to go back to normal though, so I may look into some other options like laser treatment if I decide against tattooing the graft (which at the moment is looking more likely) my other trouble area is the bottom of my mid seam, which is redder and more raised than the rest of my arm. Depending on how easy it would be I might ask for a little revision to be done on it down the line, once I’ve given it some more time to fade and again if I decide against a tattoo. It can be hard to not want to do all these crazy things to improve the appearance of it, and then I remember that I’m only 8 months post op and I’ve got loads of time for the scar to fade and mature. Still really early days, just got to remind myself. For where it is now though, I’m really happy with it and I don’t regret my choice to use my arm as my donor site.
That is all from me for now. If you have any questions as always feel free to comment or inbox. Have a good week!

status update:
So, I got a few friendly, good-natured asks on how I was doing, and what’s up with my life (work, Chandler, etc.), so I suppose this is as good a time to tell everyone: I quit my job earlier this week.
Early followers of the blog may be aware that this blog started as an attempt to find some kinda peace during some very trying times in my life. Since then, I’ve been burning the candle at both ends (I guess, in some kinda misguided attempt to move on with life) and... it’s finally caught up with me. I’m fucking exhausted and at a breaking point. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. ('Spiritually. Ecumenically. Grammatically.' Name that movie!) And so, I'm giving myself a break and am going to be taking some time off to focus on my mental health.
However, this hasn’t been an easy decision to make, as it means bye-bye financial independence and my ~~riproaring Sex And The City life (snort, NOT) and that I will now have to pack up my entire life and leave the country I (and Chandler!) call home. So the next few days will be even rougher; full of transition and second-guessing myself. But in the long run, I think I need to do this now before things get much worse.
Poor Chandler has no idea what’s coming up; that he’s about to be unceremoniously stuffed into a box and flown many thousand miles to a whole new country, with strange new smells and creatures (including my relatives who will want to come around every now and then and friendly-ly harass our socially anxious butts.) I just hope we both survive this move!
As for what it means for the blog, it’ll mostly be business as usual, I suppose. I will have more free time, but it’s going to be invested in moving, and settling in, and recovery (first I have to recover from the moving and settling in, and only then can I focus on *actual* recovery) so... I’ll do as much as I can. Yes, there's lots of new shows, most of them better than IB, and I might wanna watch them too, but.... idk, I don't seem to have it in me right now to get invested in a whole... new.... thing. We'll see once I'm properly settled into a restful routine where I don't feel so battered in the brain. On the plus side, moving to India means proper access to Hotstar and Sony Liv and alllllllll the platforms; I won’t have to jump through hoops and diddle around with VPNs to access what I wanna watch! Yaaaaaaay!
There are a few things blog-wise that I just have to address though, because they’re srsly stressing me out a lot lately:
Messages asking me to explain WHY stakeholders in the industry (actors, makers, the channel) make the decisions they do. Bhai main kahan un sab ke ghar ya boardroom mein ghussi baithi hoon, ki mujhe pakka pata hoga???? All I can do is speculate like the rest of you. Which is what I do. I look at the facts that I do have (social media posts, TRP reports, etc.) and put out MY theory. But it’s all it is. A theory. I do not have any kind of information that you also do not have access to. Asking me to explain the inner workings of complete strangers' minds is just nonsensical. I do not have the complete information based on which I can give you an accurate answer. So please just stop asking me these. At this point, idek why *I* do half the things I do, let alone have any surety of anyone else’s decisions.
Complaints. Look, all of us have complaints about the shitshow that is IB, and the Tellywood industry at large, and its affairs both off-screen and on-screen. But just think of my plight when news breaks/an episode airs and I get like 10 anons in an hour, most of which are filled with cribbing. OVER SOMETHING I DON’T HAVE ANY CONTROL. You have all the right to complain, sure, but not IN MY INBOX. I only publish about 30 - 40% of the asks that I actually do receive, and because of that you may think that you’re the only person sending in this to me; but trust that more often that not, you’re not. I most probably have already received least 5 messages about it, in varying degrees of negative, and it’s exhaaaaaausting for me to wade through it all.
"Asks” that are just STATEMENTS, with no real question to them. I get these and whether I agree with your statement or not, my only reaction is “.... haan, toh???” What really is the point of these? I have nothing to contribute to them. It’s just YOU deciding that your opinion is sooooooo important that you must come tell ME it. In my inbox. On anon. Which is not just stupid, but also RUDE af. What you're doing is the equivalent of going and ringing the doorbell of a stranger's house and monologuing in their face about a random topic when they open the door. Like, I literally did not ask?????? Especially since you’re on anon and I have absolutely no personal equation with you. By having an open inbox, I didn't consent to being the receptacle of every opinion wrt Tellywood under the sun. Like, the whole point of this blog is so I can shout MY dumbass opinions into the void that is the internet without bothering anyone else about things they might not care about/agree with. Anyone who follows/engages with me is here by THEIR choice. Why don’t you do the same? Go make your own blog, instead of using mine. There’s only place for one person here on this blog, and that’s me. Please read your messages before sending them and ask yourselves: Does my tone/content leave anything open for discussion? (FYI: Just putting a question mark at the end of a sentence does not make an engaging question that opens up a discussion.) What contribution am I inviting from the recipient with this message? If the answer is “no”/"nothing", then please don't send it.
The rise of combative and contrary asks; ones that don't come out of a genuine curiosity, but with the intent to mindlessly argue, talk in circles without a point and overall, and just belittle the opinions I’ve expressed by engaging in whataboutery. There's a point at which "healthy discussion" ends, and "debating" starts, and I’m not here to engage in Debate Hour. The open askbox (or replies function) is NOT an invitation to pick at ONE sentence of some post (often missing the context; those other sentences are there for a reason y'know) and demand explanations from me, for which I have to then bend over backwards to clarify to some random faceless person on the internet. Not only does it take tremendous amounts of time and energy (for what is largely a pointless endevour: these people aren't really here to have an exchange of ideas or even try to see my point of view, they're just trying to force THEIR contrary opinion ON me), it really sucks the joy out of the blog for me. Look, I am not an idiot. I can correlate writing patterns and associate them with previously seen comments/opinions and make educated guesses on who these may be coming from. I've been holding off on blocking anyone yet, but these comments and asks have me seriously considering it. (And FYI: blocking an anon blocks you via IP address. So don't think ki 'oh ho ho, I can just hide under the anon function, coz that has no consequences.' All you'd be doing is proving my guesses right, as to who is whom.) I don't WANT TO go to such extents, and want this still to be a place where people can approach me, but this gross disrespect of my time and boundaries is beginning to wear on me now. Before coming at me, please think to yourself if what you're saying is actually necessary. If it's just a passive-aggressive counter-argument to my opinion that's all conjecture/opinion (i. e. things without factual basis and based on feelings) then please; you're very welcome to whatever you believe, but I don't care. If I wanted your opinion, I’d ask for it. If I care for your opinion, I will engage with your posts (by liking or commenting or reblogging or sending you my love in your inbox.) I just really really don’t care what anyone's opinion ON MY OPINION is. Please stop being contrary just the sake of it and ruining my day and mood. Go chronicle your opinions on your blog/twitter/whatever, instead of using MY blog as a platform and arm-twisting me into participating in this unpleasant exchange. I just don't have have the energy or interest to engage in this fuckery anymore.
Look you guys, I love getting stuff in the askbox. I do. If I didn’t, I’d just have closed the askbox and called it a day. I’m just asking that you be a little THOUGHTFUL about the recipient, me, AS AN ACTUAL LIVING PERSON WITH FEELINGS AND A LIMITED AMOUNT OF ENERGY AND TIME, instead of some kinda faceless robot who just processes your messages in binary and spits out an answer. Before engaging, please re-read your message to consider your tone and content and the impact on the person on the other end. Despite this request, if you just decide to engage in the above mentioned ways, I’m sorry in advance if you end up getting blocked; but things have reached a point where I have to look out for myself, and my comfort, and what I want from this space. I would like this blog to be source of joy in my (and others’!) life, not something that I feel resentful about, or as a source of draining what little energy I have left.
Sooooooo, that’s how it is! Things should be the same around here barring some periods of inactivity occasionally due to moving/spotty internet (but the queue should be running anyway.) A lot less negativity and gloom, hopefully! Wish me (and Chandler!!!!!) luck and please send us all your good, restful, soft and fluffy vibes!

7. Compare OS
In July, Mac has released their newest beta OS, El Capitan. While users still might experience a few bugs until the official version is released this fall, many of us are quite happy with the overall experience and all the new features. To make the experience even better, there are numerous apps available for the OS. Whether you want to increase productivity, organize your day better or find a great media player, I’ve got you covered. Here are my top 10 picks of the greatest and most indispensable software for Mac OS X El Capitan.
Disk Clean Pro (Best Mac Cleaner & Optimizer) An all-in-one solution to keep your Mac machine. For those who really don’t like the design of the native macOS Mail app, Airmail 3 is about. Powerful Mac apps that won't break the bank. There’s something of a misconception when it comes.
Top 13 Must-have Software for Mac OS X 10.11
#1. Recoverit (IS)
Recoverit (IS) recovers almost all kinds of files from multiple devices. You can use this powerful Data Recovery to recover your images, video or audio files, ducuments and archives etc. It is also available on Mac computers, video players, USB, hard drive, digital camera, and memory card. This Data Recovery provides the easiest, fastest and safest solution to recover your data lost by accidental deletion. You are allowed to preview your files before recovery. The recovery process is extremely easy and every one can use it without difficulty.
#2. Wunderlist
Apps For Mac
It can’t hurt to have a great to-do app, but finding one that is actually great for you is harder said than done (trust me, I’ve been there). Wunderlist is probably the best one out there, because of its versatility. Whether you want to write a grocery list, manage work projects, create a schedule or set a reminder for that important business meeting next week, Wunderlist has got you covered. The interface isn’t cluttered and difficult to navigate, so organization will be easier than ever. To me, this is an app I couldn’t function without. Plus, it allows you to share lists with family or colleagues and is available on pretty much every platform. You can set reminders, due dates, add hashtags, notes or print your schedule with just a few clicks. That’s power, right there.
Price: Free ($4.99 for the Pro version)
#3. 1Password
Do you know that feeling when you have so many accounts or email addresses that you eventually forget what the password is for every one of them? I do, which is the reason why I love 1Password so much. It keeps all of your passwords in one place, so you’ll never have to click that embarrassing “I forgot my password” button again. There are a lot of similar apps available, but I opted for this one because of its overall simplicity. In El Capitan, 1Password might experience slight display glitches, but other than that, it works fine.
Price: Free ($69.99 for the Full version)
#4. iSkysoft iMedia Converter Deluxe for Mac
iSkysoft iMedia Converter Deluxe for Mac is an all-in-one video converter that converts an audio or video media file to virtually any format. In this case, this can be a very helpful tool that allows you to convert your video files from or to any other format. #5. Mailbox
Going through your emails is often like running through a maze – you get lost in junk mail, subscriptions, newsletters and personal emails, so sometimes, you overlook a few important messages. Mailbox is only one of email management apps, but, unlike most of the others, it’s already available for El Capitan. With mailbox, you get an iPhone-like experience; you can swipe right and left to delete or mark your emails, it has a bunch of useful features and a fast and visible interface.
Price: Free
#6. MalwareBytes
Every computer needs a good anti-virus protection. MalwareBytes has over 200 million downloads, so it must be doing something right. It’s simple to use, while still effectively protecting your Mac from those dangerous Trojans, worms, spyware, rogues and whatnot. Protecting your computer is definitely something every user should invest in, so if you haven’t downloaded it by now, get right onto it.
Price: Free ($25.54 for the Premium version)
#7. Caffeine
This tiny little app prevents your Mac from automatically going to sleep and starting screen savers. Although it doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, it’s pretty useful for users and that’s why I love it. After installation, you’ll see a little coffee cup at the top of you menu bar – when you click it, Caffeine will be active, but you can turn it off just as easily. Plus, it’s free, so if you decide you don’t want it anymore, you won’t shed any tears over the price.
Price: Free
#8. CoconutBattery
CoconutBattery allows you to see everything you need to know about your battery’s life: how often it was charged, how much time you have before you need to charge it again, current capacity in comparison to when it was new, its age and so much more. It doesn’t take up much space on your Mac, but is really useful.
Price: Free (they accept donations, though)
#9. Colloquy
Have you been searching for that perfect messenger to communicate with people? If so, this is the best choice you can make. Usually, Mac’s chat apps aren’t very easy on the eyes, but Colloquy is the exception. It’s really simple, clean and easy to use and has a feel of a high-quality Mac app. Plus, it’s available on mobile, as well. It has a sleek interface and you can customize the look of it however you like. It also includes a dictionary and emoji’s, so communication will be really easy.
Price: Free
#10. Fantastical 2
This is probably one of the best, clearest and most user-friendly calendar programs out there. It allows you to import your schedule, organize your tasks in different categories (family, work, personal etc.) and all of it will be reachable and easy to navigate. You can also set reminders and have 2 different themes to choose from – Dark and Light. Fantastical 2 is the Holy Grail of calendars, trust me on this.
Price: $39.99
#11. Filmora Video Editor
For those who needs a tool for video editing, Filmora Video Editor is by far the most powerful and useful video editor. This software allows users to convert video clips into movies a lot faster. You can also create a timed movie with background music, professional effects and smooth transitions. With Filmora Video Editor, you can edit and personalize your video and audio files with ease.
Price: $39.95
#12. CleanMyMac 3
This is a software useful to anyone with a Mac. Most of us have a lot of apps or old files we don’t really need anymore, but can’t quite bring ourselves to delete them. That’s where CleanMyMac 3 comes in. Hey, did you know that every time you rotate a photo or make any sort of change to it, your computer automatically creates a copy of it? Now, how many unnecessary files is that? A lot. With this program, you can choose which folders you want scanned, so broken downloads, old updates, file copies or old email attachments won’t eat up your disk space anymore. Call it a spring clean, but every computer need a cleanup every now and then.
Price: Free (€39.95 for the full version, €59.95 for 2 Macs, €89.95 for 5 Macs)
#13. Deliveries
Now if you are big on online shopping like me, you’ll love this app. It will be located on the bottom of your screen and show you the status of your purchases. Whether you’re waiting on the latest gadget, a piece of clothing or a new book that you can’t wait to read, with Deliveries, you’ll be able to track your shipment. If you click a particular delivery, it will display more information and there’s also a countdown timer, so you’ll always know how much more you need to wait until you get your hands on an anticipated product. It’s compatible with more carrier services, like FedEx, DHL or City Link.

an update of sorts
Hi babes, a little late, but as promised, here’s a bit of an update. Please feel free to ask any questions and I’d love to make another post or maybe a video answering those...would we be interested in a video??? For now here’s this:
It’s been a while and it’s been so wonderful checking up on all of your blogs/seeing where you’re all at. It’s also been super refreshing to have a break from here/social media in general while I’ve been healing, but I’m experimenting with coming back as I do miss the community. Right now, I’m writing this from my grown up adult bedroom in my very own apartment (well I have a housemate) in LOS ANGELES!!!! I’m snuggled up in bed with some lemon ginger tea after a long day of treatment and work and feeling so lucky to be where I am. If you had asked me at this time last year if I thought I would be here I would’ve laughed in your face. I intended on being dead. Everything was falling apart: my recovery, my relationship, my career.....I was going through so much trauma and loss and the pain was so unbearable. I’m not sure I want to get into specifics yet, but let’s just say my life was literally turned upside down.  I think if you go back far enough you can see some posts alluding to what was going on, though I’ve deleted a lot of them because they were too painful to see. It is still hard for me to cope with all that loss and my heart aches everyday, but thank goodness I’ve invested in myself because now I know I’m strong enough to move on and that I deserve so much more than the life I was settling for. Of course I miss parts of that life and still hope that one day they will come back to me, but I’m learning how to be strong for myself and put myself first and I’ve gotta say that despite the ups and downs...it’s pretty damn amazing! I mean I’m living in FRIGGEN CALIFORNIA!!!!
Backtrack--I went to treatment for a long time back in December. Was in inpatient 2x for a suicide attempt, then residential for a relapse with my eating disorder, and then many months of PHP for the same thing. It was incredibly hard being in the place that I had become so broken in and after years of wanting to start over somewhere and encouragement from my then therapist who unfortunately had left me during all of this, I went to CA for almost 3 weeks to see if I liked it. I had no money or plan really, but I came home, packed my stuff, and 3 weeks later I was driving cross country to my new home in North Hollywood. I had never felt so alive!!!! It has not been easy, believe me. I’ve worked some weird jobs, I’m living pay check to pay check and barely making it, it’s so hard to make friends as an adult, but I have never been more proud of myself. The sense of independence I feel is INCREDIBLE. I make it work. I have an amazing life coach/therapist who sees my potential and does not let me settle for anything less than she knows I can be and deserve, I’m in touch with my real friends from home frequently, I do a lot of hiking and free stuff around LA, and I’m really focusing on my recovery and healing. I’ve also been doing things I never thought I would. I’ve worked on TV shows and gone to cool events. I’m cooking for myself a ton, going to crazy yoga classes, and meeting really interesting and inspiring people. I’m finally becoming who I really am--whoever that is!?! and learning to embrace it all!!! Slowly, I’m letting go of what anyone else thinks and doing what makes me feel good. Does my family think I’ve gotten super earthy crunchy/hippy dippy?? Yup. Do I care? Nope. I know they still love me and it’s ok if they don’t understand.
I’ve lost some good friends in this process as well and that has been very, very painful. I wish I had the words to say to make that better or to rationalize it. I’m still working through this and have very mixed feelings about it.
Recently, I began attending an IOP program in beverly hills for eating disorders. I’m in a bit of a downslide restricting wise due to stress, but I’m determined to turn it around before it gets bad. I refuse to let myself ruin this new life I have created. I’ve been there almost a month and it’s been really tough because I should be in the PHP but they are working with my work schedule/ trusting my therapist that I can balance work and treatment. I’m honestly feeling a bit burnt out, but I just keep reminding myself that I want to LIVE and I can’t do that with an eating disorder that is actively taking over. It’s scary this time around (kinda like the last time I was in program and ran away before I did the work because they were too pressuring) because I’m at a crossroads and the team knows I could leave and be “ok” for a little while OR I could finally do some REAL work that I always avoid and put myself in the uncomfortableness and finally make some real progress in terms of the trauma and ED.
What...a whirlwind, huh? :-)

So many of you have been writing to me about 5G technology and everyone wants to know what I think about it.
I really believe that 5G is going to supercharge the America 2.0 revolution. The revolution that is already accelerating faster and faster as a result of the current crisis.
I think about this tech revolution like a complicated Rubik’s Cube. You can turn one part of a Rubik’s Cube and it affects every part of it.
When I look at our megatrends that build America 2.0, that represent the component parts of America 2.0, I really believe that widespread adoption, availability and usage of 5G is going to skyrocket any number of technologies that change the world.
Let me give you three examples of this.
1 – Real Estate
But more specifically, real estate through the use of virtual reality. We have been told by companies like Zillow and Redfin that virtual real estate viewings are skyrocketing. In other words, people are staying at home and they are looking at real estate.
The millennial generation is buying real estate using these virtual visits.
One of the best ways to look at a house or a neighborhood is to use virtual reality to get a sense of it. Why would 5G accelerate virtual reality beyond real estate and into surgery or manufacturing? It’s because it could bring a level of depth and detail that requires a lot of bandwidth.
5G is fast and is going to be available everywhere because it is wireless. I believe you are going to see an extraordinary acceleration into the adoption of virtual reality.
2 – 3D Printing
At this point, you know that 3D printing is a big part of America 2.0. In fact, the signature America 2.0 stock is the 3D printing stock. 3D printing is also going to benefit from the bandwidth, availability, access and widespread usage of 5G.
Right now, 3D printers are still located on premise. In other words, in the same place where people manufacture today. There’s no reason for that.
We can setup 3D printers anywhere. These printers could be in one place, while the engineers, designers and owners are thousands of miles away. Sending instructions to the printers. You can place these 3D printers anywhere in the world, exactly where they are needed.
They can be in one place, use software to come up with the idea and simply send it. Because 5G will become more available, you can parallel any number of 3D printers to make entire things — an entire house or even an entire space vehicle.
The at SpaceX are already using 3d printers and they are not alone. There’s going to be an enormous move to making 3D printing the default method of manufacturing.
3 – “Robotaxis” and Autonomous Vehicles
Based on what I have seen from recoveries in China and other counties, I believe this crisis is going to drive a greater adoption of autonomous vehicles and robotaxis. People will welcome it. Until now, they have been largely experiments that people have done.
People have been somewhat unwilling up til know. There has been some push back. However, from what I have seen in China, people want private transportation. They no longer desire to be in a collective space where there can be viruses or germs. People want a clean, private space to transport themselves. That is the perfect setup for robotaxis.
Tesla is at the forefront of this. While Uber and Google are innovating in this space as well. I believe there will be impetus for all of these companies to push their services. Governments, which have largely been somewhat unhelpful, will actually encourage the developments.
I believe this is going to create the impetus for robotaxis and autonomous vehicles where you can call a car and it will come to you and take you where you want to be. That will benefit from 5G because we need reliable, fast communication so the cars can communicate to each other, communicate to you and communicate to its base so everything happens the way it’s supposed to.

These are laser-focused, incredible stocks that are changing the world as we speak. This revolution is happening right now. It’s not going to happen in the future, it’s happening right now. When I look at our portfolio, it’s already separating itself from America 1.0 stocks and the old ways of doing things.
Our stocks are beginning to show the benefits of being America 2.0 and being part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Yesterday we suddenly saw a huge move in the markets.
And seeing what caused this, it shows us investors remain incredibly emotional.
But the truth is we are in a “V-recovery.” This bull market will make new highs faster than anyone imagines right now — and America 2.0 stocks will get there first.
If you’ve been on the fence about investing, now is the time.
Today we discuss our No. 1 trade for negative oil prices, the industry we call “digital steel” that will build America 2.0 and hand investors life-changing gains in the process …
And a new update on our big 3 — Tesla, bitcoin and pot stocks.

May 2019 - Mental Health Awareness Month
Tumblr media
Though this has mostly turned into a travel blog, I want to take some pause from my usual routine to discuss something extremely important to me: mental health awareness month. Mental health is slowly but surely becoming something that we humans are okay with talking about, and that makes my heart happy. However, we still have a long way to go. We still lose too many young people who lose their battles with depression, anxiety, etc. We still have so many generations of soldiers who have been taught to “man up” instead of working to understand the medical reality of PTSD. We still have too many people who say that medication is “not for them” when in reality it could save their life.
With that, the world could benefit from more openness about mental health. My biggest resolution this year has been to be an emotional open book. I have tried to be realistic about where my heart is: I have posted on instagram and twitter about how hard being abroad has been on my mental health, and about the reality of pushing through it and what helped me do so. We need to normalize the fact that everyone has their deep dark heavy days, and that they should feel comfortable sharing that with the people they love. Learning to do so is not easy, and it is always a process, especially when we are raised to put only our “best self” into the world.
Going into the month, I want to open up a door for people who haven’t spent time thinking on mental health to do so. This month is about awareness, reduction of stigma, and compassion.
Here are some organizations that are really doing the best work with regard to mental health. If you want to donate this month, donate here. If you need somewhere to get involved, these are also your spots. The names of every organization or individual I mention have links embedded.
Hope for the Day - This organization, focused on outreach, education, and community action, works to equip people with the tools to foster proactive suicide prevention in professional, academic, and civic environments. They also have a coffee shop in Chicago, IL called Sip of Hope, the first coffee shop where 100% of the proceeds support proactive suicide prevention and mental health education. This is a rallying point for resources and engagement, a social enterprise powering HFTD’s Proactive Prevention work. I had the pleasure to visit this place and hear about all that they do, and it was truly breathtaking. Additionally, their instagrams for both HFTD and Sip of Hope are lovely. They post some really lovely and important reality checks as well as posting updates about their work. As noted in their slogan, it’s okay not to be okay.
Bring Change 2 Mind - Founded by Glenn Close, this organization focuses on nationwide reduction of mental health stigma. They achieve this through video “PSAs” that are aired on television and social media sites as well as large advocacy events. They recruit famous athletes and artists to speak at their events and show that mental illness affects everyone, no matter how “strong” they seem or how happy society tells them they should be. Bring Change 2 Mind also has many high school and college chapters in an attempt to start education about mental health at the time when it is most needed.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention/Out of the Darkness Walks - Present in many communities and at many college campuses, AFSP hosts walks all across the country to “give people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss, and the platform to change our culture’s approach to mental health.” I attended the walk at the University of Michigan this past year, and I had never felt less alone before. There were beaded necklaces you could put on to express your personal relationship to mental illness, resource tables, donation booths, discussion areas, and anything anyone could possibly want to know about where all of the donated funds would go (mental health research initiatives.) Particularly on college campuses, this organization is a gem.
To Write Love On Her Arms - To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. Formed after a personal struggle with depression and addiction, this organization has a beautifully personal story and focuses on spreading the idea that better days are always ahead. There are so many ways to get involved with this organization, so do it!!
Project Semicolon - Based on the grammatical idea of a sentence that isn’t finished yet, this project focuses on active suicide prevention. Their slogan is “your story isn’t over,” and has inspired many people to get semicolons tattooed on their wrists as a constant reminder of that. They have a section on their website where you can interactively examine your own mental health, including help lines and resources specifically for teens.
Brain and Behavior Research Foundation - This organization focuses more closely on the clinical side of things, and donating here helps support grants given to researchers working on resolutions to mental illnesses (as well as palliative care methods.) Here is where you can find all of the information on the clinical aspects of mental illnesses as well as see updates on cutting edge research being done. Right up my pre-med alley, but also should be up everyone’s alley - education about the clinical aspects of mental illness helps cement the reality that it is just that - a clinical illness.
The Trevor Project - The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25. They work in primary crisis intervention (with extremely accessible help lines on their website) as well as research, educational outreach, and film. This project is uniquely important because it acknowledges that the unique trauma faced by LGBTQ youth lends itself to a number of distinct mental health challenges, and allows for specific responses.
Next, I want to highlight some celebrities and social media accounts that are wonderful to follow in their attempt to be open about mental health and support others who struggle in the way that they do. They’re worth following and reading about, especially if you want to feel less alone!
1. Kevin Love - the article linked under his name says it all. Through his openness about panic attacks and mental health struggles as an NBA player, he is leading the fight against “masculinity” stigma in sports. Athletes coming out as proponents of mental health education is becoming more common, and his openness has jumpstarted that movement.
2. Lady Gaga - Through her involvement in the movie A Star is Born, Lady Gaga was propelled to the front of a discussion about drug abuse and mental health. Linked under her name is her speech at the Grammys where she openly discusses mental health and sets an example for what every person with a voice as big as hers should be doing. She has also opened up about her own mental health struggles.
3. Ariana Grande - Arguably the most popular singer in the world at the moment, Ariana has used her music to work through her own personal struggles with mental health, and everyone is loving it. Specifically, her song “breathin” works through her struggle with anxiety and really represents the reality of getting through panic. The article linked under her name discusses her comments on the song and the way it has already helped so many fans. It certainly is my go-to on my most anxious days.
4. Logic - Highlighted by his stunning 2018 Grammys Performance, Logic has been outspoken about mental health both in and out of his music. He played a concert called “Who Can Relate?” in combination with a lot of mental health organizations (Bring Change 2 Mind included) at the University of Michigan, inspiring many college students to think about their mental health (now to be repeated in other locations.) His song 1-800-273-8255 (the national suicide hotline) is breathtaking, and what so many people need to hear.
5. Kesha - After a tumultuous few years, Kesha has gone public about mental health issues, including eating disorders. This comes after a long legal entanglement with her former producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, who she was sexually assaulted by during their time working together. She told Billboard that she’s working on new music that will “showcase my vulnerabilities as a strength and not as a weakness.” Her most recent album did exactly that, and it is incredible to watch someone who went through such dark times grow and thrive. We need her. She also released a movie, Rainbow, about the mental health struggles she experienced when writing her most recent album.
6. Brandon Marshall - In this phenomenal article and his work with Bring Change 2 Mind, Brandon has opened up about his struggles with mental health and the dissonance that comes with being a “big macho football player” while going through all of it. He said, “When I first heard the term “mental health,” the first thing that came to mind was mental toughness. Masking pain. Hiding it. Keeping it inside. That had been embedded in me since I was a kid. Never show weakness. Suck it up. Play through it. Live through it.Now, I realize that mental health means the total opposite.” This is critical.
Below are some authors and poets and speakers I turn to for guidance with regard to mental health, and who tell stories beautifully and in a deeply personal way:
Rebecca Solnit
Leslie Jamison
Ned Vizzini
Neil Hilborn
Tallulah Willis
Here is a link to a million TED talks on mental health that are both informative and inspiring.
Below are mental health related instagram accounts to make your feed more well rounded and encouraging and healthy:
Recipes for Self Love
By Maria Andrew
Hope for the Day
Make Daisy Chains
Brene Brown
Breaking Taboo
Mental Health Daily
Lastly, here is a link to the playlist I blast in my headphones on hard mental health days. It’s pretty personal, but it has a lot of songs with good lyrics and melodies to push you through.

The president, sending a signal about his apparently dimming view toward the sitting bureau boss, tweeted comments recently made by the head of conservative watchdog Judicial Watch, Tom Fitton, on Fox Business Network’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight.” Fitton's comments, and Trump's promotion of them, were aimed in part at congressional Democrats who have been ramping up Trump administration probes in the wake of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report. Can you imagine what would happen if I ever said what she said, and says?* Last week, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said in an interview that it gave her "a calming feeling" to think of her Palestinian ancestors giving up their lives and their land to create a safe haven for Jews fleeing the persecution of the Holocaust. She added that her ancestors had to give up their dignity at the same time, which is why she now supports a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On Monday, Tlaib accused Trump and GOP lawmakers of "spreading outright lies" about her. Given the deeply polarized atmosphere in Washington now, and Tlaib's outspoken criticism of Israel's current government policies, her statement immediately caused a furor. "GOP leadership, including President Trump, have twisted and misconstrued my words to spread falsehoods rooted in hate," Tlaib said. _(from NBC News)_ *🐦 Under my Administration, we are restoring [NASA] to greatness and we are going back to the Moon, then Mars. Update: 28 March, 2019
Hi guys. Kai here. As you may or may not know, I have taken over the Spectrum Zine from the original mod, Ali. And honestly? It has been A Fucking Process. I’ve enlisted the help of a few trusted people, including Ardett helping me out with social media, and we are at a point where we are able to enter the final stages of this project and we’re asking for your continued patience and cooperation so we can finish out the project, get you your orders, and make our donation to True Colors.
Okay so the update as it currently stands is:
I got handed a clusterfuck of a zine in dribs and drabs by Ali. Despite repeated requests, I did not receive all the information I asked for. I have still not received much of that information.
Yeah, no, after S8 dropped, I couldn’t look at Voltron without feeling sick for about a month, I’ll be honest about that. And no, that’s not a ship thing. I could give a shit about what ships are or aren’t canon. I mean the characterizations and the million and one ways they abandoned everything they’d built for seven seasons. But I got back into it and I’m not going to abandon a fandom I love because of a silly little thing like Canon Sucking. Since then, I’ve been back to working on this project.
Apparently, the original tumblr page for the zine is gone. I did not do this. I have NEVER had access to this tumblr page. It must have been something Ali, the original project runner, did. I literally even didn't know Ali had nuked the tumblr page until very recently. Ali hasn't spoken to me in months and our last contact was me attempting to get the passwords from them yet again with yet another empty promise.
That said, I have officially GUESSED my way into the twitter account, changed the password, and removed Ali from the recovery info so I have THAT now, at least, as well as the original yahoo email account. I'm going to be posting there starting March 16th.
I did NOT at any point have access to the tumblr page. I have NO idea if anyone sent messages to that page, I have NO way to find that out. (I can only assume any frustrated messages were sent there. Only two people asked about the status of the zine via Twitter.)
Not sure who follows my main but life kind of exploded for me (repeatedly) and I was briefly homeless (again) in January and then was living in a hotel. That said, now everything is settled and our house is continuing in the repair process. We finally got our flood insurance payout from fucking 2012, yayyyy!!
I just got back from Australia for an anniversary trip my girlfriend planned and paid to have me flown to the other side of the planet for.
In regards to my other activities unrelated to the zine, please don’t hassle me about posting a few fics that took me a handful of hours. That's what I do in my sparing PERSONAL time and I have been told EXPLICITLY to continue to do that by my therapist, thank you. I feel plenty of nausea, guilt, and fear every time I post a fic when I have a project outstanding like this but I have been told to not stop doing it. I have posted a grand total of 15,736 recreational words over the last 3.5 months, AKA roughly 15 hours recreational writing time total over the last 3.5 months, AKA an average of 150 words per day broken over the last 100 days. And, again, I’m told to do it by my therapist.
I’d like to share with you guys how much time has been invested in this project:
I've literally been working on this SOLO in terms of formatting.
It took repeated hasslings of Ali to get most of the project pieces.
Once I finally gained access to the email account, I had to download each and every fic and art piece individually. Most of them were not attributed correctly. Almost nobody indicated which pieces were meant to be printed and which pieces were meant to be PDF-only.
Fics:
About half of the fics had to be honestly ripped apart to their bones just to fix and render uniform and readable the formatting because they were submitted as PDFs (note to authors, submit doc files) or with very weird spacing. I’ve seen how AWFUL zines can look when all the fics are haphazard formatting and spacing and it’s not something that anyone ever likes to receive or to see their work as part of.
Several of these fics don’t even have titles (note to authors: please name your fics).
More recently, I recruited my very damn patient girlfriend (who literally bought one of these things) to help me with the fic formatting issue. She has helped me wade through 40,000 words for both formatting and LIGHT beta editing.
40,000 words of fic are in this project. That is literally the length of a damn novel. This is a fucking BOOK.
Editors, professional editors, take MONTHS to go through the edits on something of this length, and that’s when those manuscripts ARE submitted at something vaguely resembling a uniform format. This project… is not. Aphelion utilized an entire team of writers to edit, format, and beta, and it still took several weeks. I was one of those people.
Not  to  call  anyone  out,  but  one  fic  literally  had  double  or  triple  spaces  between  every  WORD,  not  every  sentence,  every  single  word,  like   this.  It  was  4,000  spaces.  Why?  W h y. There were    still additional   spaces  that had to   be removed BY HAND. (Spacing here is intentional to make a point.)
Every fic also had to be read to check whether it was a SFW or NSFW piece because nobody actually marked their work. If a NSFW piece accidentally got dropped into the SFW zine version, that could be a big fucking problem.
Art:
I had to track down a copy of SAI to get those files converted that were submitted as SAI.
My photoshop corrupted itself so I spent about eight hours scrubbing it off my system and getting it back on.
The art pieces were submitted at TWENTY different dimensions, Only six art pieces were submitted at the advertised 5.5” x 8.5” dimensions of the zine at 300dpi. Another handful were submitted at the right ratio but just the wrong size.
Like, I get it, the submission guidelines were shaky at best but I’m the one who’s been trying to wade through all of this to get it uniform.
This has been a LARGE number of hours investment.
Contributor Updates:
The credits doc was sent out to contributors. They have until 02 April, 2019 at 11:59PM EST to submit any corrections to their credits.
I apologize for the radio silence, but the project Ali landed on me was a god damned CLUSTERFUCK and I have been doing a lot of work on the back end trying to pull this out of the flaming dumpster they tossed it in because I believed in the project, especially in light of everything that has happened in the fandom and it has given me nothing but stress. But I really wanted this zine in my physical hands. I still do. More updates on that below.
So as of some time in the last few weeks, Ali has quite honestly cut and run. It looks like they nuked their instagram, nuked their tumblr (hence the zine tumblr disappearing bc they were the only mod on it), and nuked their twitter, and left me holding the bag on this shit. BUT GUESS WHAT, I’M STILL HERE.
Also, in case y’all were wondering about Ali’s Voltron Calendar project? I literally have one. It’s on my wall. They gave it to me in August when I was in Florida for a con and they promised me to my face that they would get me the information I needed for Spectrum. It was just one of the many times they promised to get me the things I needed and that one was to my face. So to anyone who never got their calendar? They had some number of them printed and then never did anything with them which is somehow worse. I don’t know how many they had printed but I literally have one of these forbidden calendars and they told me they were going to start shipping that week which obviously never happened. So that kind of shows Ali’s follow-through.
It is PAINFULLY obvious that Ali never ran a zine before Spectrum due to a NUMBER of points: Lack of organization, lack of consistent formatting, horrible method for final submissions, underpriced zine and bundle pricing, underpriced shipping pricing (even before the pricing hike), contributor count, contributor discount amount given the zine size, writer max word counts, merch quantity per bundle. Literally, we had two people submit final charm designs when we only have one charm listed on the damned bundle so that’s cool.
I couldn’t even tell how BIG the zine was going to be until many, MANY hours were invested into this project. First, there was the countless hours spent downloading one piece at a time and wading through back and forth emails and trying to make sure no one’s submissions got lost which meant basically going through every piece of correspondence individually. Then, there was cross referencing all of that against the emails and the contributor names. Then, it took getting all of the fic into one file and hours upon hours of wading through and formatting and reformatting and recruiting my girlfriend to help to even get to the point where we could see what final page count we were looking at for fic. Then, there was figuring out how long of an index a project with this many contributors would need and how many pages that would take.
I have reached out to several manufacturers regarding zine and merch pricing and what we can do to get those affordably done. This zine is VERY FUCKING THICK and I AM concerned about pricing, for both the printed zine and for merch. If anyone has any affordable manufacturers you have worked with before, I would be happy to hear from you!
Currently, here’s where we stand:
My investment:
Too Fucking Much Time
A few years off my life
A bucket of tears
I think I’m going to follow in Shiro’s white-haired footsteps from this
Seriously, do I have more wrinkles? I can’t tell.
A lot of love.
Orders:
There are 79 total orders
There are 06 PDF-only orders
There are 18 Print+PDF orders
There are 55 Merch+Print+PDF orders
There have been 5 refunds issued
Contributors make up 28 orders.
Non-contributors make up 51 orders.
Content:
The fics total out to 43,000 words. That's a fucking lot. That's over a hundred pages of FIC, before the artists.
There are 50 pages of art.
The zine is currently 126 pages. I’m fucking with formatting to try to shrink it. That's a big, thick, HEAVY fucking book.Yes, some of this is PDF-only and I am still in the process of tracking down which is which, but it is still a large book.
Finances:
The zine was priced at $7.50 for those who used contributor codes.
The cheapest print edition I can source for the zine currently because of the page count is roughly $7.50 per zine. This is why I am SEEKING SUPPLIERS who can bring in a lesser quote for an 8.5 x 5.5 126 page zine.
If the zine costs $7.50/per to print and contributors paid $7.50/per, this means EVERY contributor copy is an AT-COST copy. Not to mention shipping.
The bundle was priced at $13.50 for those who used contributor codes. This has to include the $7.50 zine. That leaves $6.50 for the bundle merch which I have currently priced around $9. That means $2.50 of every contributor bundle has to come from the zine budget.
International shipping was priced at $7.00 for the zine-only and $12.00 for the bundle. This may be feasible for zine-only orders but bundles will need a shipping supplement to come from somewhere.
At this time, I am proposing:
Creators have until 02 April, 2019 to update credits.
A rough final draft will be released to creators by 8 April, 2019.
Any major corrections to works will be submitted by 14 April, 2019.
Then I move on to handling the orders. For which I propose the following first steps:
Everyone who ordered a copy will receive the PDF edition of Spectrum on or about 28 April, 2019. Refunds will NOT be given for that first $10 per order that is the PDF price so that we can actually manage to donate SOME fucking money for how much work has been put into this zine and to make sure we can pay the print costs for those persons who want a physical copy.
As a Thank You for your patience, everyone who ordered (and contributors) will also receive a bonus mini-PDF of additional zine-exclusive content not posted anywhere else (SFW or NSFW version, to match the order).
Assuming none of the item productions are cost prohibitive, the following will be how the physical portion of the project is handled:
USA people who ordered Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option USPrint1 (Default option): Receipt of their printed zine as planned at no additional cost. Customers will have TWO WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to update any addresses as needed.
Option USPrint2: Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($5.00 print + $5.00 shipping). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option USPrint3: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($10.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
International people who ordered Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option IntPrint1 (Default option): Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($5.00 print + $7.00 shipping = $12.00). Customers will have FOUR WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to select a different option.
Option IntPrint2: Payment of an international shipping supplement (est $10.00) and receipt of their print zine as planned. Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option IntPrint3: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($12.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
USA people who ordered Merch+Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option USBun1 (Default Option): Receipt of their bundle as planned at no additional cost. Customers will have TWO WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to update any addresses as needed.
Option USBun2: Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($17.00 bundle + $7.00 shipping). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option USBun4: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($10.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 2 WEEKS to select this option via email.
International people who ordered Merch+Print+PDF will receive their PDF and be given the option of:
Option IntBun1 (Default Option): Donation of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($17.00 bundle + $12.00 shipping = $29.00). Customers will have FOUR WEEKS from the date of the PDF-containing email to select a different option.
Option IntBun2: Payment of an international shipping supplement (est $10.00) and receipt of their bundle as planned. Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
Option IntBun3: Refund of the additional funds beyond the PDF price ($29.00 minus any applicable PayPal fees). Again, customers will have 4 WEEKS to select this option via email.
By following this plan, I hope we can maximize the number of people who can select an option they can be happy with!
If production or shipping of any of this proves to be cost prohibitive once final quotes are in place, options will be adjusted accordingly.
If y’all have any questions please feel free to message either the tumblr or twitter.
Thank you for all your time and continued patience. We look forward to bringing this project to completion.

He’s no chicken: Michael McCain bets some $700M on his company’s future, but he’s one of few
The Canadian business establishment doesn’t part with its cash easily.
Ask Mark Carney, the former Bank of Canada governor, who chided executives in 2012 for guarding a hoard of “dead money,” a barb that became shorthand for the post-crisis disconnect between surging corporate profits and sluggish business investment. The issue remains; Statistics Canada reported Nov. 30 that after-tax corporate profits increased four per cent in the third quarter to a record $325 billion, while business investment declined for the first time since 2016.
So word that a McCain was dropping almost $700 million to build a new chicken plant should have been big news. But it wasn’t, really. Maybe a decade or so of watching Silicon Valley spend billions of dollars on firms of which we have never heard has dulled our senses? A massive bet on something as prosaic as food, in a place as normal as London, Ont., just doesn’t make the heart go pitter-patter in the smartphone age.
Maple Leaf Foods to build new $660 million London plant, shutter 3 others in Ontario
Maple Leaf Foods goes all-natural in entire line of processed meats
Cricket muffins, anyone? Food giant Maple Leaf bets on insects as alternative to meat
Another explanation: we haven’t been reading our Gretzky.
This week featured a lot of puck watching, as politicians and unionists vowed to fight the decision of General Motors Co. to shut its plant in Oshawa. The decision was predictable, since North American consumers want light trucks and electric cars and Oshawa builds neither.
If we were focused on where the puck was going, we would have had our eyes on Maple Leaf Foods Inc., led by chief executive Michael McCain, which is setting up to take advantage of dramatic changes in the global food market. A recent report by Citibank concluded that demand for nutrition will increase by about 70 per cent over the next three decades, and that “business as usual” will result in ecological and human-health calamities.
Unlike automaking, Canada has a natural advantage in sustainable food production because we have lots of water to irrigate crops that are flourishing thanks to longer growing seasons. But without more investment, that advantage will be squandered. Maple Leaf is setting an example of what it will take to become a world leader in a brutally competitive business dominated by American and European companies.
“We are stewards of this business, both as managers and shareholders,” McCain, the scion of the billionaire family of frozen-french-fry makers from Florenceville, N.B., who has led Maple Leaf since 1999, told me during a telephone interview on Nov. 28.
“The supply chain we have today in our poultry business, which is endemic across the entire supply chain in Canada, I think, is sub-scale and inefficient,” he continued. “It’s 50 to 60 years old, or more in some cases, and does not deploy the latest technologies. We know that while it’s a profitable category for us today, it’s not long-term secure.”
They will like the sound of those words in Ottawa.
Stephen Poloz, the central bank governor since 2013, misjudged the strength of Canadian businesses early in his tenure, forcing occasional tweaks to his economic recovery story as business investment and exports remained surprisingly weak. It wasn’t until earlier this year that the Bank of Canada expressed confidence that businesses were taking over from households as the primary drivers of growth.
Anecdotal evidence like the Maple Leaf announcement will dull the sting of StatCan’s latest survey of the economy. The report suggests the animal spirits that the central bank spied were sent scurrying this summer, as negotiations over an updated North American trade agreement dragged on, and transportation bottlenecks caused oil prices to plummet. Economic growth slowed to an annual rate of two per cent in the third quarter from almost three per cent in the previous quarter, as the plunge in business investment sapped momentum generated from record levels of unemployment.
Over at the Finance Department, Bill Morneau, the minister, has spent much of the current fiscal year trying to convince people that he hadn’t made a terrible mistake by ignoring U.S. corporate tax cuts in his February budget. The International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and virtually every Canadian business lobby said too little was being done to correct a litany of competitiveness issues. Morneau finally responded earlier this month with a budget update that promises to forgo some $14 billion in revenue by reducing taxes on new capital purchases, pledges an impressive deregulation push, and allocates about $1 billion for measures aimed at greasing trade with Asia, Europe and Latin America.
McCain is a member the Agri-Food Table, one of six expert committees that the Trudeau government assembled in 2017 to provide advice on how Canada could lead in each of their respective fields. The boss of Maple Leaf, the country’s fourth-biggest food processor by revenue last year, reckons Morneau’s refusal to be rushed might have resulted in some good policy.
The “overarching theme” of the food committee’s advice, “was the need in Canada to invest in productivity, scale and competitiveness,” McCain said.
“The food industry around the world is a scale game. It’s brutally competitive,” he added. “I’m pleased to say that in the fall economic update, I think the Government of Canada, Mr. Morneau, did actually respond very effectively to those issues under tremendous pressure for some kind of tax response to what took place in the United States.”
Aggressively partisan Conservatives back in Carleton County, N.B. might dismiss McCain’s praise of Morneau’s update: the McCains are said to be Liberals, and the finance minister is married to Michael’s cousin. (Disclosure: Michael McCain and I grew up on the same patch of Western New Brunswick; he on a hill overlooking Florenceville and the Saint John River, me on a swampy farm on the outskirts of a neighbouring village.) To counter that sort of talk, the head of Maple Leaf need only point to his company’s share price, which has doubled since he took over almost 20 years ago. He knows something about business.
The specifications for Maple Leaf’s planned London facility are the result of a world tour of state-of-the-art meat plants. It will churn out more chicken with relatively fewer people. It also will be outfitted to treat chickens humanely, minimize food-safety risks and significantly reduce the current environmental impact of processing live animals. The latter set of considerations are at least as important to Maple Leaf’s future as slimming the cost of production.
“I’ve been in the food business all my life,” McCain said. “When I hear activists around the world saying that the food industry is one of the most unproductive production systems on the planet and needs to be re-engineered, that’s hurtful,” he added. “I want to be part of the solution of climate change, not part of the problem. That’s why we’re committed to it.”

Miracle Workers
https://healthandfitnessrecipes.com/?p=7810           The last few weeks have been painful.
Flaring is no fun, but the flight to San Francisco was beautiful!
I went into a flare right during/after my return from Seattle, and it hit me hard. I know how to explain all of the chaos that pain causes, but I have no idea how to explain pain itself. It just hurts. In my English classes, we sometimes discuss the idea of pain as the absence of language. There is no way to let other people in or to get out. Here is what I can tell you: I slept for 17 hours per day for three days in a row. I was unable to go to work. I cried at the dinner table. It was horrible.
Thankfully, I went to my weekly physical therapy appointment for my jaw a few days after the flare started. My physical therapist noticed immediately how terrible I looked, and instead of asking me, "How have you been this week?" like she normally does, she went straight to, "Oh dear, tell me what's going on." I cried and cried as I described the flare, and she listened empathically the entire time, her hand rested gently on my aching knee, without saying a word.
At the end of my rambling and repeated, frantic confessions of, "I have no idea what to do," she convinced me to email my rheumatologist. My rheumatologist, who is attentive and responsive and smart and everything you want a rheumatologist to be, emailed me back just a couple of hours later and sent in an urgent, fast-acting prescription for me, which I started just a few hours after her email. By the next day, I was already starting to feel a bit better.
When I first started jaw physical therapy, I thought I was only going to between four and six appointments total. I brought a different friend to each of them and did not make much of an effort to get to know my physical therapist or the technicians (to be fair, I was also having needles stuck into my face repeatedly, so I was not in top friend-making mode). Once I realized that these appointments were going to be happening weekly for an indefinite amount of time, I ditched my strategy of having to organize someone to go with me every week (too exhausting) and decided that I was going to have to be a little friendlier.
Now that I have become a bit more invested in not being miserable at the appointments, considering that they are a weekly part of my life, I feel so grateful for my physical therapist. She has quickly become one of my favorite members of my medical team. She talks to me about Paris and New York City and Seattle to distract me from discomfort. She invites me to imagine all that I might be able to see and do in the world, even with arthritis. She listens carefully and never rushes or interrupts me, even when I am losing it a bit, and that is rare for a medical professional. She is gentle even when her therapies are invasive and painful. She is kind and empathic and she communicates effectively with the rest of my medical team (at this point, my jaw has a sub-team within my larger medical team, which is as ridiculous as it sounds).
I am equally grateful for my rheumatologist, who acted quickly after I emailed her, and who has been following up with me ever since. She communicated with my jaw surgeon and helped me with a medication plan just in case things get worse while I travel over the next couple of weeks.
At an appointment on Monday, I confessed to my jaw surgeon that I had been hoping to have my October 2017 surgery repeated before I spend two weeks abroad, but that I knew that it was too late now. He truly listened as I explained how much I wanted to chew without pain, enjoy the trip, etc., and rather than brushing these things off as minor inconveniences or viewing my concerns as unimportant, he asked, "What about Thursday?" We talked about the risks of having a surgery exactly one week before getting on a plane. It does not feel great to be at a point where that sounds like a risk worth taking, but here I am. I have no idea how I got here, but I am grateful for miracle workers. Within the span of just a few hours, I had an x-ray of my jaw, a consultation, a surgery scheduled, impressions of my teeth made, a chat with a financial counselor, approval from my insurance company, a health history taken, a consent form signed, vitals taken, and a pre-op appointment in a different part of the hospital.
So there is a third incredible member of my medical team. I am grateful for my jaw surgeon for being willing to make something that seemed impossible happen in a matter of days.
Perhaps most importantly, I am grateful for my friends. When I told them I was having unexpected but long hoped-for surgery, they immediately wrapped me up in words of encouragement and in positive vibes and in love and in the promise of their presence. Without missing a beat, they jumped to, "Okay, we're ready. How can we help?" They automatically began inquiring about my smoothie orders and asking which days they could come over. There is exactly one week between my surgery and my flight to go out of the country for a couple of weeks, and the few friends I have told about the surgery have offered company and rides and promises to check in with me, even after I insisted that the operation is minor. One friend promised to talk about nuns with me, while another suggested driving me around with the windows rolled down if I feel stuck at home. One suggested a spontaneous trip to Target, where we bought face masks in preparation for a bit of post-op pampering. My friends teach me so much about what it means to draw people closer when they are suffering rather than shut them out. If a miracle is something inexplicable and divine, their reactions prove that they are miracle workers. And local friends, if you're looking for anyone to go get manicures/eat ice cream/watch Netflix/cry over minor problems with over the next week, I'm your girl.
Just getting booked for this surgery was a miracle, and because I have had it before, it does not seem justified to feel nervous. I was totally in my "yes, let's go, let's get it done, hooray" mode on Monday, but I have found myself more anxious last night and today, I think in part because it feels like everything is happening so quickly and I have not had adequate time to digest that I have to go through the whole hospital/anesthesia process tomorrow. Today I feel fearful and hopeful. I feel excited and desperate. I feel worried and empowered. I feel relieved and nervous.
Thankful for this adorable, not-so-little pup! 💙

Maybe it is okay to be enormously grateful, overwhelmed by the kindness of my medical team and friends, and a bit scared all at once. I am writing my surgeon a thank you note in advance since I am worried that I will forget to pause and truly express my gratitude when he comes in to check on me before the surgery. I do not feel like I will ever be able to return all of the kindness that people have so freely offered me. It seems like the least I can do is make sure to say "thank you."
Despite all of this chaos, I really am doing my best to recognize and be involved in Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month. This Sunday at 9 p.m. EST, I'll be going live on Facebook (send me a friend request!) and Instagram (rachelksauls) simultaneously with my best friend Faith to do my Humira and methotrexate injections. Weekly injections are part of life for a lot of JA kids, so I hope that you will consider tuning in to see what this process is like and to ask any questions you might have about injections or JA in general! I will also give a little update on jaw surgery recovery.           If any of you have suggestions for reducing pre-operative anxiety, I would very much appreciate them. Also, if you have ideas about what I can do to entertain/calm myself in the two hours between arriving at the hospital and being fully anesthetized, I would appreciate those as well! Many thanks to all of you. It is exciting to think that the next time I post on this blog I may be in much less pain. It feels worth the risk.
