Okay, this idea has now been sitting in my brain for months now, although I took it in a slightly different direction than your initial concept...

If You Give a Sokka a Suki

If you give a Sokka a Suki, he's going to ask to learn to fight.

When you teach him to fight, he'll probably help you defend your village.

When he's finished, he'll apologize for underestimating you.

Then, he'll blush when you forgive him with a kiss.

After you kiss him, he'll want to visit you again on Kyoshi Island, and he'll be heartbroken when you're not there.

But that just means he'll be extra excited when he sees you again.

He might get carried away and act all over-protective.

He may even end up feeling conflicted and guilty about his feelings for you.

You'll have to give him a little space to figure out what he wants.

He'll act like nothing happened the next day, so you'll apologize for crossing a line.

When you tell him you were just looking out for him, he'll get so excited he'll want to kiss you.

He'll kiss you.

After he kisses you, he's going to think about you when you're gone.

And then he'll want to rescue you when he finds out you're imprisoned by the Fire Nation.

Which means he'll need your badass parkour skills.

He'll bring you with him when he escapes the air temple,

and he'll make you a sand sculpture to show how much he loves you.

But then Prince Jerkbender will remind him that they have to defeat the Fire Lord.

So, he'll come up with a plan to help the Avatar.

And chances are, if he rides into battle against the Fire Nation...

he's going to want a Suki to go with him.

Joi Irinaka was not a nervous man. An ill-tempered man sure, but nervous? Not likely. He's only ever been nervous about 2 times in his life so far. There was the first instance when he was younger running with a wild crowd that nearly ended him in jail or worse had he not found his way out. And the second instance was now.

His eyes shifted from the stack of bills and papers in front of him to the clock ticking on the wall and back again. He hadn't been able to focus during this last hour and to him the stakes were considerably high. Tonight was your first year anniversary together and he didn't want to mess anything up. He'd already purchased you a gift 2 weeks in advance and was planning on taking you out to your favorite restaurant tonight. The thing holding him back from everything was the fact that he was still stuck here at work for an extra 2 and a half hours more than he intended. It was getting to be later and later into the evening and he was becoming more anxious with each passing minute. Finally there was a short knock at the door before Nemoto entered. Joi immediately stood up and shifted into his larger form. Shin ignored the daggers being glared at him considering Joi's anger was a daily occurrence to him. "Calm yourself Irinaka. Communications broke down between us and the other group and that is what caused the delay. I will take over from here." Nemoto assured him as he took a seat and began counting the bills. Joi had no time to complain about anything as he needed to get home and get home quick. So he gathered his annoyance at his teammate, bottled it up, and headed out of the base to his car.

On the way home he was formulating a multitude of apologies before settling on the best possible option. Unfortunately everything was cut short given the sudden information he's come across when his notification chimed from his phone. "What-WHAT THE HELL???" He could feel his eyes nearly bulge out of his head as that familiar throbbing came about from the anger welling up. The package got delayed??? It was supposed to be here TODAY! He gripped the sides of his phone and nearly cracked it in half had he not remembered your soft voice in the back of his head reminding him to breath. He reluctantly tried to calm himself down, grinding his teeth before taking deep breaths in and out. "Alright it's fine...It's fine. I'll just get Y/N something tomorrow to make up for the package being late. No time to shop tonight since we gotta go to the restaurant. Speaking of which..." He quickly dialed the number to check up on the closing hour and what he heard next would've surely sent his old self into a blind flying rage...

"Our apologies sir but we're currently under renovations given the new addition to our establishment. Can we offer you a 2 for 1 coupon to make up for this inconvenience?"

"gggggrrrrrrrr NO YOU CANNOT GIVE ME A 2 FOR 1 COUPON BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE SAME THING AS EATING THERE WHEN I NEEDED TO!!!!!!!!" He hung up the phone and swore he was going to explode soon when suddenly he heard a gentle tapping at the window of the passenger side. He looked and saw your smiling gently at him. Your muffled laugher quickly calmed him as you pointed at the lock on the door. He unlocked it and you took a seat on the inside. "Why are you out here screaming over the phone? Is it those people trying to sign you up for their healthcare plan again or is it that group asking about our car warranty?" You teased him. He frowned and looked down at his lap, twiddling his large thumbs and sighing. Your demeanor changed as you shifted from playful to open-eared. "What's wrong Joi?" He sighed once more and looked at you defeated. "Everything is fucked and it's all my fault."

"Huh?"

"Y/N, I fucking ruined our first anniversary. First I wasn't even supposed to go to work today and still went in anyway since we needed the money. Then I ended up staying way too long."

"Joi It's okay! I know you need to work. You can't exactly skip days in the yakuza...well I'm sure you can but you probably shouldn't. I respect you and the hard work you do to support us. It's no big deal."

"Yeah? Well then I get home and find out the gift I wanna get you is delayed in the mail. It was supposed to be here today and now it won't be here to next week likely."

"So, big whoop! I don't need a gift right now tonight just because it's our anniversary. I'm happy just having you by my side for an entire year haha."

"But the restaurant too...I was gonna take you to eat at your favorite place. They're closed. That suit over the phone said they were rennovatin and such."

"Okay? I have a lot of places I like to eat at. If one is closed then I can just eat at another one!" He grimaced and stared at you for a moment longer. "Why are you always so soft on me? Always forgivin me for shit when you know I don't deserve you. I don't de-" You silenced him by grabbing his hand and pressing a long kiss into the palm of it before nuzzling your cheek into it and looking up through your lashes at him. "You shut your mouth or you'll really be in trouble. Irinaka I love you so much. I love you much more than you seem to know. I think you deserve everything and more. Just because everything isn't going the way you planned it doesn't mean that it's any less of an anniversary to me. What matters to me now is that you're here and I'm here...we're here together. Don't you figure that's good enough?" You waited on his answer. He smiled a small smile in return. "Yeah I suppose."

"Now put it in drive will you? We can go somewhere and get something else to eat. Oh let's also try and catch a movie! There's this new one out that I think you're gonna like. It's got that one actor in it that was also in-" By now he was lost to your happy chattering but fully focused on the way you looked tonight. The way your eyes always seemed to twinkle with excitement and the way you smile so softly at him, and mostly just the way you love him despite all that he is. And although things didn't go as planned in the moment, he was finally beginning to feel like this first anniversary was a success. He could only hope for many more with you right by his side.
