April 25 is the national day of commemoration of Australia and New Zealand for victims of war and for recognition of the role of their armed forces.

It marks the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

The soldiers in those forces became known as ANZACs.

Anzac Day is a commemoration of the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli, Turkey.

When Great Britain declared war against Germany for its invasion of Belgium in 1914, Australia and New Zealand, as Dominions within the British Empire, regarded themselves automatically also at war.

At dawn on 25 April 1915, the first of approximately 70,000 soldiers from the Allies landed at Gallipoli.

The objective was to drive through to Istanbul, take Turkey out of the war, and to provide supplies to Russia in its fight against Germany.

Out of these 70,000 soldiers, more than 20,000 were Australian and New Zealand soldiers.

What had been planned as a bold stroke became a stalemate after the invading troops failed to reach their objective on the first day.

For the next eight months, they clung to the land they had captured, before eventually withdrawing at the end of 1915.

After both sides had suffered heavy casualties, the Allied forces were evacuated.

It is estimated that 8,700 Australian and 2,700 New Zealanders were killed.

One year later, in 1916, the first anniversary of the landing was observed in Australia, New Zealand, England, and by troops in Egypt.

That year, April 25 was officially named ‘Anzac Day’ by Acting Australian Prime Minister George Pearce.

Today, we speak of an ‘Anzac tradition,’ meaning the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship that are still relevant to this day.

NOTICE OF MILITARY ACTION

Citizens. Soldiers. Free people of Begroun.

We come to you in a time of newfound danger around every corner. It has long been thought that Zapita might weather the storm of the ongoing global conflict unscathed, but it appears that this is not the case.

Our neighbors, the Republic of Dracea, are in the midst of a political upheaval. Their Independence Party have led a coup d'etat on their standing government, and sacked a palace in their capitol. As the situation progresses, it is likely that their nation will be thrown into civil war.

Although an independent and thriving people is surely a goal to strive for, wanton violence is not the way to achieve it, and conflict on our doorstep threatens our domestic safety. As a result, we at the Consulate have determined to muster military forces on the Dracean border and assist their authorities in quelling the violence. When the fighting has stopped, we may then act as mediators to ensure that the people's interests are met without jeopardizing Dracea's stability.

Recall the oaths you swore when you were enlisted. Now is not the time for fear, but for decisive and glorious action.

The Warsaw Uprising was the main operation of the Polish underground during World War II, aimed at liberating Warsaw from German occupation. It took place in the summer of 1944, led by the Polish resistance movement, the Home Army. The uprising coincided with the withdrawal of German troops from Poland before the Soviet attack. As it approached the city's eastern suburbs, the Red Army temporarily suspended its combat operations, allowing the Germans to regroup and defeat Polish resistance and destroy the city in retaliation. The uprising lasted 63 days with little outside support. It was the largest single military effort by any European resistance during World War II

The misery that is Gaza is played out hourly on our TV screens, on radio and on social media. The Israelis are loosing the propaganda war because of the horrific death toll of Gazan civilians, especially women and children. The accusation that the Israeli's are attacking hospitals has been used as proof positive of their unjustified military response to the Hamas massacre of October 7th. You can therefore understand my surprised reaction when I heard a World Health Organization doctor reveal that Hamas has been attacking medical facilities in Israel.

The doctor was asked about claims by the Israelis that Shifa Hospital was being used as a base for Hamas military action. Here is part of his reply:

“Well, as you say, the reports have not been independently verified. In principle of course WHO always condemns the use of medical facilities for military purposes. We also condemn attacks on health care, and in this crisis we have documented over 150 attacks on hospitals and health care in Gaza, around 170 in the West Bank, and also 33 attacks by Hamas on healthcare in Israel.” (BBC: Today: Dr Rick Brennon: 20/11/23)

To my knowledge, the fact that the WHO has documented 33 attacks by Hamas on healthcare facilities in Israel during “this crisis” is not something the mainstream media has ever reported, and it was only revealed today as an “aside” piece of information to a larger question.

Neither the right-wing Israeli government nor the Hamas run government in Gaza are blameless for the horrors we are witnessing. The Hamas government, and let’s not forget, it IS Hamas who control Gaza, claim to have fired 5000 rockets at Israel on the day of the October 7th massacre.

“At about 6:30am (03:30 GMT) Hamas fired a huge barrage of rockets into southern Israel with sirens heard as far away as Tel Aviv and Beersheba. Hamas said it launched 5,000 rockets in an initial barrage… Smoke billowed over residential Israeli areas and people sheltered behind buildings as sirens sounded.” (Ajazeera: 07/10/23)

Many of these rockets were aimed at cities and towns within Israel, the deliberate intention being to kill as many innocent men women and children as possible.

The point I am making is that if we are going to be subject to a running commentary on what the Israeli armed forces are doing in Gaza, especially in and around hospitals, let us also be reminded of what the armed forces of Gaza (Hamas) did and are still doing regarding their continuing attacks on Israel.

i guess the reason i'm not an anarchist is that i don't think if you get enough people in your community doing mutual aid that one day white supremacy and colonialism are going to poof out of existence. there's a bunch of intermediate steps between those two things, and a lot of them involve large-scale organization, and when it comes to large-scale organization, at some point you're gonna have to do a thing that looks a lot like taking the reins of state power to influence policy.

that necessarily implies some degree of compromise and coalition building and dirty, dirty politics. but i would prefer that people actually do the work of building a better world instead of sitting around in their mutual aid groups going "if only we had a way to organize on a large scale and somehow exert influence government policy! guess this is an unsolvable problem."

#direct action is great for some things #it has literally never done anything to slow down the U.S. war machine #there is no amount of activists who can glue themselves to the driveway of u.s. arms manufacturers #to stop military interventions overseas #at some point you need to combine tactics
