hey guys, i’ve listened to all episodes so far and i am looking forward to more. i was just wondering if y’all can recommend any other podcasts, supernatural the show themed or otherwise?
Hi! I'm so glad you're listening and enjoying!
This gets quite long so we are putting it under the cut.
My knowledge base lies pretty strictly in audio dramas, and I feel like you may be asking for podcasts that are more talk-show-y, but on the off-chance that you don't mind, here are my top recs (also, coincidentally, all of these have protagonists of color if you care about that):
1. Alice Isn't Dead is a mystery/horror story about a truck driver on a road trip across America as she searches for her missing wife. Its approach to the strange beauty and loneliness of the dusty corners of America is beautiful, Jasika Nicole's voice is so soothing, and Supernatural fucking wishes it could pull of the "complex commentary on America and monsters and the terrible price of freedom while also being infused with humanity and hope" gambit that this podcast executes. It's explicitly referenced in this post about How to Make SPN Not A Magic Cop Show and extremely rightly so.
Transcripts can be found at @alicescripts!
2. Mabel is a horror/fantasy podcast about "ghosts, family secrets, strange houses, and missed connections." Anna Limon, working as a live-in caretaker for the elderly Sally Martin, starts leaving voicemails to her estranged grandaughter, Mabel. If you want to listen to houses that love you so much they want to eat you, eerie fairies under hills, lesbians dealing with family trauma, and a podcast where every episode sounds like pure poetry, step right up!
Transcripts are on their website.
3. Unwell is a Midwestern gothic mystery about a woman returning to her hometown to care for her mother. It's a podcast about ghosts, erasing town histories, secret societies, caring for your home, and complicated but loving family and found family relationships. Also, the sound design is fucking banger.
Transcripts are on their website!
4. Janus Descending is a 13-episode sci-fi/horror podcast told through log entries of two astronauts exploring a new planet. Chell's story is told in chronological order, while Peter's is told in reverse chronological. As you go on, you piece together exactly what happened on this flight and how impossible it is for you to stop this tragedy. The writing is very tight and also Chell is my beloved.
Transcripts are on their website!
5. The Far Meridian is a magical realism podcast about an agoraphobic girl in a traveling lighthouse searching for her missing brother. Featuring: a candle named Guillermo, found family, adventure, and longing.
Transcripts on their website!
6. The Strange Case of Starship Iris is a space drama about space smugglers, cool aliens, found family, and oppressive regimes. The characters and their friendships are all a delight, and it's both a fun and emotional time.
Transcripts on their website!

Hello! I, on the other hand, like more laid back, personality driven, people just talking podcasts. Here’s my rec list!
First off, for Supernatural related podcasts, you can find a list of currently airing ones here. We are especially shouting out Monster of the Week, Escaping Purgatory, and Mensch of Letters.
If you are also into star trek (like I am), you may also enjoy The TNG podcast. They talk about every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s super fun!
I am also a big fan of the Green brothers’ various podcasts.
Dear Hank and John is an advice podcast hosted by John and Hank Green. It’s super fun and it’s the podcast that got me into podcasts.
Delete This is a podcast by Hank and Katherine Green where they talk about Internet-famous Hank Green’s tweets to evaluate what has happened in their personal life and in the world that week. I love the husband-and-wife dynamic on this one. It’s one you rarely hear in podcasts, I feel.
Finally, The Anthropocene Reviewed (Transcripts) is a podcast by John Green. It talks about humanity and the world by ranking different things through a five star scale. I am a fan of non-fiction books and essays, and this one is That in audio format, to the point that it has actually become a book (which I haven’t read yet.) I am not a fan of the John Green‘s fiction writing style, but his non-fiction is heart-wrenching and dynamic, and has the ability to make me cry like a baby (which this podcast has done many times so don’t listen to it in public!)
That’s all!

Hi hi, I’m obsessed with your HBO SPN stuff, but can we please hear more about HBO Unnatural? I’m even more obsessed with that!
nobody should have given me the power to create unlimited high-budget spinoffs of the spn universe but here we are!!! hbo unnatural (see hbo emma and magda for ref) is just [all the monster kids the main narrative fucked over or forgot] [they’re grown-up and yet still just kids in so many ways] [doing their damn best in a world that never wanted them to survive] [helping the people around them not out of altruism or righteousness but because they know what it’s like to be alone and frightened in the dark gutters of this life] [because, despite everything, they still believe in kindness]
spn is the gothic sprawl of midwestern americana, but unnatural is the glitz and blaze and rush of cities that tower high enough and bright enough for the unwanted to hide, vibrant and pulsing enough for monsters to vanish into the slipstream and walk unnoticed in the teeming chaos, it’s [emma and jacob fleeing miami after they cross the amazon clan one too many times and have a bounty placed on their heads] [jesse narrowing his eyes when he senses their energies cross the threshold of manhattan] [magda sitting next to jacob on a bench in central park, both of them staring at sparrows without really seeing them] [neon storefronts seen as blurs through a rainy taxi window] [emma coughing up blood on the fire escape] [the four of them sprawled on a roof passing a blunt back and forth] [jesse walking into a morgue and walking back out with a cooler of human brains and no one the wiser, because every staffer in the building felt their eyes and thoughts slide involuntarily away from him the moment he entered] [emma trying to show magda how to throw a punch] [jacob leaning over a ferry rail, hair ruffled by the damp wind off the bay] [magda’s head pillowed on jesse’s shoulder, the tv flickering, volume turned down low] [kitchen table piled high with newspaper clippings and scrawled research notes] [piling a bunch of blankets onto the floor of their tiny living room and calling it a sleepover] [when really they just don’t want to be alone with their nightmares]
and it’s the ley lines of enemy and ally being shifted, it’s [jacob bartering secrets with a wraith informant in the back table of his favorite coffee shop] [magda and jesse linking fingers and psyches in order to eject the demon currently curling emma’s mouth into a sharp grin] [creased map of the subway system with territories marked in pale green ink] [dropping by the best nightclub on the east side because the vampires who run it also sell protection charms out of the back room] [magda bringing a plate of cookies to the werewolf family living downstairs] [jacob crouched behind a dumpster with shaking hands and his heart hammering in his chest, as the red and blue police lights screech past] [blankets and raw hamburger for the vetala child who shows up on their doorstep shivering and alone in the middle of winter] [shifter sidling up to jesse in a crowded bar, murmuring a code phrase in his ear] [magda shoving her consciousness up past the skyscrapers so that she can scan the streets for Harmonia’s demigod assassins] [angels kicking down the door and nearly gutting jesse before jacob shows up with a holy fire molotov] [bela leaning back in her chair, smirking at the four of them as they squirm in their seats in the downtown brasserie where she prefers to meet new buyers] [emma sprinting through a maze of back alleys trying to lose the british men of letters who have been tailing her ever since she exited the subway twenty blocks south]
and it’s, you know, just [jacob’s hand nervous on the thermos of liquified human tissue he was trying to enjoy by the riverside] [because the suited young man who wanted to ask him a few questions is smiling an easy, sharp smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes] [it’s ben braeden, two weeks into his internship at the fbi’s new york office] [ben braeden, young and brilliant and knife-eyed and hungry to prove himself] [ben braeden, who paces the floor of his tiny studio, fixated on the brief glimpse of jesse that his brain keeps doing its best to forget] [ben braeden, always driven to asking why, always picking at the story’s edges, the places where things don’t quite make sense sense] [like maybe if he can chase down the inexplicable gaps of the world he’ll be able to explain away the empty gaps in his childhood, too] [put a name and a face and a file to the hazy figure who skirts the edges of his memory on the nights when he wakes up from half-remembered dreams of terror]
oh and obviously crossover episodes with wayward like [uneasy alliance with the wayward girls after the unnatural gang tails an amazon emissary to sioux falls] [emma flirting shamelessly with claire until kaia looks her dead in the eye, takes claire’s flannel off the back of the chair, and pulls it on] [crammed into alex’s sensible minivan fighting over stakeout binoculars] [claire and emma splitting a soda on the back porch after a sparring session where they beat each other bloody] [donna hailed as a hero when she arrives with fresh doughnuts and coffee] [hissed arguments over the best way to do recon in a sleepy midwestern town] [patience wondering why jesse is a blank spot in her senses] [magda and kaia glancing at each other’s scars, eyes soft] [alex showing jacob how to splint a wrist, how to thread an iv line, how to breathe slow and ignore the way blood smells fresh from the vein] [jody trying to adopt the lot of them and getting gently but firmly turned down] [they don’t have a place with hunters] [they’re their own family, making their own home]

i can def toss around some other ideas for hbo!deanjohn but before i do i also have some thoughts around WHY which are basically that we know hbo is a boundary-pusher, especially about sex. we also know that kripke-era spn, especially the first few seasons, is heavily defined by the genre of gothic horror (lots of writing on this both academically and on this webbed site), and that the genre of gothic horror often dabbles in the horror of incest. and that spn often dabbles in the horror of incest.
so combine that with hbo's penchant for pushing the envelope, i think you'd end up with a show that digs itself deeper into the aesthetics of midwestern gothic and horror while also playing up the triangular desire between john-dean-sam and the taboo of the fact that they desire. so i think there would also be a lot more intensity between sam and dean (which is saying something, given how the wb played it from the jump) while increasing john's presence within that.

aired-on-fx-spn, so exciting. there is a weird sort of balance between spn’s midwestern rural gothic and atlanta’s southern urban gothic that is really compelling. the nutella sandwich guy is definitely some kind of creature. something about how the scariest monsters are the ones who are just people. something about not knowing who you are and what you want but trying to latch onto something or someone so you don’t wash away.

"you take it any way you want" oh for FUC- HE- I-
he looked so Sad, so like...he's stopped idolizing him
jesus christ.
boy there's gonna be overlap ok here we go.
1. poor dean. Ok couple things: 1) he elder sibling'ed it SO HARd! he didn't even like Adam, but he still tried to keep him safe(I think). he gave him a hunter's funeral! I just. It was nice to see. It was also INCREDIBLY painful to hear the realization of "you were always like dad, I never could be" and the fact that he didn't even see it as a good thing anymore? fUCK man, that huRT me. Dean tried so hard to be something he wasn't, he got probably the brunt of the abuse(because he didn't measure up to that metric like Sam always would), and in the end all it got him was...just. so much pain. Like it felt like John left his Broken children behind to get a new one, and just turned them into his quest for revenge. It was SO So fucked
Hey actually speaking of
2. AM I SUPPOSED TO LIKE BEING A HUNTER/JOHN? WHAT HTE FUCK?
YALL ALREADY MARTYRED HIM BUT UR MAKING HIM WORSE?
LIKE ok listen. John's kinda set up as the ideal of hunting. They martyred him! And I was halfway sold provided they didn't mention him again. Then! he did this thing where he abandoned his kids, seeing them only as tools to fulfill his quest for revenge, literally broke them(that too late thing+zachariah saying "it's in your blood" when really it was just trained from a young age), got a NEW family he treated a lot better. I just. I have...NO idea how I'm supposed to see him as a good guy here. Maybe I just kin Dean, or his plight is WAY more sympathetic(it is, Sam is kinda pissing me off), but John's just...coming off worse and worse and they KEEP doing it!
Also! this whole cycle of revenge thing! about how if you keep taking an eye for an eye, everyone ends up blind! they barely escaped this time, and I think this was the second revenge plot that I can think of with MONSTERS alone! it was a BIG theme! Like!! hunting sucks! revenge makes you end up in worse places! it's like this one episode was made to show how SHIT hunting was!
wait who wrote this
Dabb+lofflin. The hunting sucks always comes from-
this GODDAMN INCONSISTE-
3. Fuck John Winchester
4. Individualism. Ok this is a big one. Alongside the whole revenge plot thing(which is BIG, and a hunting sucks), this one drove home the sheer individuality of hunting. But while some of the writers see that as Badass, this one made it seem lonely, and painful. Like the flip side to American Individualism is American Chronic Loneliness. I know this one was used to process the ennui of the post recession/post 9/11 time, and it's doing very well for that, but it kinda ends up like this show is EVERYONE'S therapy all at once! the gang's all here! and we're gonna traumatize you in the process as well.
EDIT: and yeah yeah yada yada american individualism is King and then so is it’s accompanying loneliness in the post 9/11 post war in iraq post recession world(we were not having fun in 08/09)
and I get that this show is the writer’s therapy and whatever
(I just thing this is phrased better)
5. bring him back. Connect! Look. I know it breaks the core ethos of this episode. But having Weird Esoteric Hunter siblings would have been SO FUNNY!
give me more sibling content! Sam+Adam teaming up against the Eldest Sibling Dean WAS SO FUNNY! I WANT MORE OF THAT
6. SAM WHAT THE FU-. Look. I hate John. I very much hate John. They set up the Sam/Dean dichotomy in regards to John first episode, and Sam acting more like an ass+like his dad is. Not making me like him. Also I feel like this was written to sympathize with Dean. Which makes the finale even more ironic, I feel.
7. Listen. Listen. One of you has to keep track of continuity. Like I know this becomes a WAY bigger problem later in the series, but if a certain writer wants to process/examine a certain part of the Life/Story(and they should, they set up a lot of interesting stuff), they have to keep track! Because then the show becomes everything all at once.
Like this show has ALREADY started feeling like fanfic of itself, where it just kinda does whatever it wants with its own concepts. And the concepts are GREAT! but you can TELL how inconsistent it is, even in the kripke era
like it ends up being Study of X, Riff on X! and I think that's where the inconsistency comes from. It's also why it's so fucking Excellent in places.
whelp this was a lot holy hell.
OH AND ONE MORE THING!
Bela didn't fit the narrative. That's why they didn't like her. I said at the beginning that an Int'l art thief does NOT fit the vibe of "grungy Angsty American Midwestern gothic" and I was right. With the lucifer story and the vibe she didn't fit, and so they just killed her as foreshadowing, and only used her like that. God I wish they'd riffed on her, especially because her callouts were all completely correct
we're Bela Salting again
listen she was preppy Jack Sparrow with some spiritualism, how dare you tell me not to like her.

man I’ve been thinking about supernatural too much lately and it’s really making me want to put together a Monster of the Week campaign with a midwestern gothic aesthetic. So kind of like early seasons spn but crank the religious imagery way up....

I'm primarily looking for SPN rps <3
•Angels/demons/humans (fallen angels; fallen for love, for pride, for power. Who is to say what the price of Falling is. Those that were guardians of humans and watched over them; how could they not fall for love of their father’s favored creations. If angels are capable of Falling are Demons capable of Ascension?) •Witches/familiars/something like the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (deals with the devil for power; summoning demons as familiars; trading parts of your soul to stay young and beautiful. Sewing parts of the soul together when you find your mate. You may become an abomination but you won’t be alone in the vast emptiness) •Mythology, particularly Greek mythology. (Hades and his Persephone, Ares and his/never his Aphrodite, Achilles and his beloved Patroclus, Hades and Minthe, Icarus and Shining Apollo.) Fandoms: Supernatural. Just really want someone to play Castiel/Lucifer/Gabriel/Michael for me. I’ll play anyone for you. Or Supernatural with ocs! Word Bank {enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies, to be possessed; to be obtained. To love that which is ineffable. To love that which is infernal. Friends to lovers. Southern Gothic. Midwestern Gothic. Deals with the devil. Soulmates. Jealously. Obsession.} email: [email protected] discord: luciferous #2453
