spn thoughts as requested
tw & spoiler warning
they should have kept the grungy filter and aesthetics from the early seasons
bring back the southern / midwest gothic vibes
dean would've listened to and loved 90's & 2000s grunge - I know that the whole "there's no good music past '79" is a key part of his personality but pre series/early seasons dean is soo nirvana / Weezer / smashing pumpkins coded
there is too much flannel in the later seasons - I miss the carhartt and leather jackets so bad
BRING BACK DEANS JEWELRY
there's so much about cas that we don't know. there's all the episodes where he just isn't there and they never tell the viewers what he's doing or where he went
on the same note, cas's personality isn't nearly as flushed out as sam's or dean's are. who is his favorite musician? what's his favorite place to travel to? why does he like the pimpmobile so much? does he actually like the trench coat or does he wear it just because it's there?
so many people characterize cas as a little guy, and while he is cute, it's important to remember that he's also an incredibly powerful eldritch horror who leads angelic armies and brands Michaels vessel just because
dean is bisexual and in love with cas - I won't take the time to list all of the reasons here, but you can definitely find those reasons somewhere
i would've loved for them to use the handprint as a physical manifestation of their bond instead of having it be just a scar that fades with time
i'm actually really ok with the way cas dies, I think it makes sense for his character and provides closure (for him, at least, not for dean)
the parallels of cas and dean meeting in a barn and then dean dying in a barn
cassie is deans first love, cas is his last
the imagery of the empty as cas's wings in 15x18
why do the subtitles spell cas as cass, its awful
there's a few lines in the early seasons that seemingly reference dean getting roofied / sa'd and are subsequently played for laughs, Jensen Ackles confirmed that dean would've done underage sw when John didn't leave them with enough money. I believe that this trauma is a major reason that dean never accepted his sexuality
the way deans alcoholism is overlooked and joked about is actually insane
having dean be completely ok after 15x18 is also insane, especially after the widower arc where the show specifically shows it's viewers how deeply dean grieves cas when he dies
deans death is literally so stupid. I get that the show is trying to make a really meta point about the characters not having plot armor anymore because chuck is gone, but dean deserved to find peace. if the events of the show had never happened and pre series dean had never gotten pre series Sam back into hunting it would've ended the exact same way - dean dead on a hunt and Sam dying from old age
dean spends as much time on earth as he did in hell, and while he would never be the same, I like to believe that if he had been allowed by the narrative to live longer he would've gotten back a little of the twinkle in his eyes that he had before hell
in 15x20 Bobby says that cas helped rebuild heaven but if he was there he would've gone to see dean. additionally, there's no way cas should have been able to escape the empty. this is such a glaringly obvious plot hole and it drives me nuts
I would've liked to see cas's wings in the show - not just the shadow of them
the only time I tolerate serious discussion of wincest is in the context of ethel cain
i am a Sam disliker - while he does have many positive qualities, I have a really hard time getting past him not looking for dean when he was in purgatory and him joking about deans alcoholism and other traumas
i like Sam the best when he's with Eileen, I think they're adorable together and I'm mad they killed her off
I am a chronic jack defender, that boy has done nothing wrong
it would be interesting to explore cas and jacks relationships with their respective genders
there's no way being forced to murder the dean clones didn't affect cas, we only saw him kill the last one but the first few he had to kill had to have been devastating
i'm really disappointed by 14x13 Lebanon, we get the scene with John and Sam but I would argue that dean has significantly more reasons to be upset with John and it's unfortunate that the episode just glossed over this - I believe a screaming match between the two would have cleared the air a bit and been at the very least cathartic for dean
i'm fairly sure that it's canonical that John sent dean away on his 17th birthday to kill lesbian ghosts. my personal hc is that John suspected that dean was bi and sent him to teach him a lesson
i saw a post on here comparing hunting culture to biker and cowboy culture and viewing those things through a queer lens and I thought it was fascinating - there's so much spn could've done if it cared about the show more than money and losing viewers
every time cas and dean beat the shit out of each other, it serves as further proof of their relationship rather than discrediting their relationship - ie demon dean and cas fighting in the library is used to parallel Cain and Collette. it could even be assumed that their love is stronger because Cain killed Collette but dean left cas alive
The purgatory love triangle was so silly
once dean worked through all of his trauma and toxic masculinity he would've been a swiftie
all of the main characters have old / vintage cars but in like season 13/14 dean sam and cas just collectively own and use this really ugly silver truck from the 2010s. its such a small detail but it absolutely ruins my viewing experience every time I see it
dean is actually really smart but most of the fandom overlooks it because Sam is characterized as the smart one. if you know anything about cars you know it takes an insane amount of brains to build a car from scratch (he did this with baby multiple times throughout the show) also he just makes an emf meter using basically nothing. if dean had been given the same opportunities he gave Sam, he would've been an engineer or something
i will always be a John hater, if this man has 0 haters, I am dead

kripke, gamble, and the others put some kind of addictive cocktail into spn where it’s just enough homoerotism to make you go batshit insane but enough wiggle room that there are so many intricate readings and interpretations of the show, so many types of headcanons. it feels familiar and alien at the same time. it’s gothic just enough that it can’t be pigeonholed into the genre while at the same time using gothic conventions masterfully and in an atypical setting for a gothic story. it has conversations about american masculinity and relatable discourses on god and pries open the notion of the american nuclear family into something twisted and it feels like the midwest and has a dedicated aesthetic. it understands alienation! it understands abjection! it is both wildly queer and homophobic. it has terrible bigoted flaws and yet people from those marginalizations are drawn to it!! what the fuck!!!!!! this show is just so. yeah.

Appreciating how lovely and rich spn from a lapsed Catholic perspective could be-- especially when applied to Sam's storylines-- while also wishing more people understood the American gothic aesthetic and application of faith and religion in actual spn is very midwest Protestantism.

What do i do when i have several aesthetics and obsessions like its hard to juggle them. Its like im stuck between these egos SPECIFICALLY
<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3
-mid 2010's dork watching markiplier and Garret watts and old Shane Dawson vids 24/7and dreaming of california and florida, late summer nights, solely drinking starbucks, having the soft girl aesthetic and religiously following niche moodboards from 2018...also downtown coffee shops
-Mcbling Queen living in the 2000s with a pink room and glitter everywhere, watching The Simple Life and going on shopping sprees alot while living off of starbucks, lowkey a slut
-Early 2000s kinda suburban, kinda country kid? Watching Supernatural, Listening to Big Thief, going out on hikes and practically living outside. Collecting bugs and plants, obsessed with the Midwest and South, writing poetry in a beat up journal, mazzy star and dreaming of leaving this town one day
-insane storyteller and writer with big collections turning her house into a musuem and searching for her dark academia soulmate
-cowboy.
-Southern Gothic/coquette? Like, redneck coquette. Out in the midwest or deep south, living in a small town, housed in a trailer park. Early morning runs to the gas station with almost nothing on. Walks in the farmers market. Exploring the woods. Church potlucks. Exploring folklore. Supernatural. Living my best life in the rural empty countryside.
-NEW OBSESSION THAT JUST DROPPED OUTTA NOWHERE FOR ME: 2010s, Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher, cryptidcore, pretending im a hunter, exploring woods and abandoned lots with starbucks and notes, writing a cryprid entry journal, being real dramatic and dreamy, flannel on and boots. BOOTS!!! coffee shop meetings downtown, rainy/gloomy days. Hyperfixated on mystery and supernatural tales and folklore, rambles alot
<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3
Tbh I've embodied each of these but now I'm at a standstill, i want to be all of them but i feel like i just HAVE to dedicate myself to one!!! It's this weird conflicting teeth gnashing feeling like i want to rip all these things apart and eat them
But like, i can be a coquette cryptid hunter drinking starbucks stopping by a gas station in the rural south right? In my soft pink Juicy Couture tracksuit, right? With Markiplier merch in my car?
Also the worser part of this. The men. The men I fixate and associate with all of these.
Johnny Cage is Trashy Y2k, SPN cast is Southern Gothic, 2018 is Markiplier, Arthur Morgan is cowboy, some random dilf for coquette, and idk who it'll be for this new one....

You’re driving down a road. Potholes rattle your car. The last sign you saw read “Kansas City - 112 miles,” but that was hours ago. You feel like you’re not supposed to be there. It’s dark. Your brights are on but you still can’t see. You’re not supposed to be there.

what would you call spn’s aesthetic? it’s the only one I really identify with but I’m not sure how to find more of it beyond, like, american/regional gothic and Pinterest boards for the show
ooh, anon, I wish I could be of more help here, but I’m not sure what to call it either! similar to you I think I would  have gone with back roads americana/rural gothic/surrealist midwest/something like that. it seems like the common consensus is also that the early spn aesthetic was different (grittier, darker) than the later-season aesthetic (grander and brighter but simultaneously campier?), but that’s not even a hard rule because there are certainly zany episodes in the early seasons and dark gothic episodes in the later seasons. sometimes I like to think of it as an aesthetic of juxtapositions. it’s rose windows but also decaying houses; it’s blood but it’s also flannel; it’s a fluorescent bulb but it’s also latin chants by candlelight; it’s a pyre but also a memory foam mattress; it’s empty hallways but it’s also a lush forest at noon; it’s a dimly-lit room but also the open road; it’s a small town neighborhood but also heaven’s gilded prison cells; it’s the boy king of hell in an oversized hoodie; it’s a planned han solo archetype but he’s a kid pouring cheap cereal into a bowl; it’s an angel crammed in a diner booth looking at a menu he doesn’t need.

re: the Fact ask. I'm partial to the fact that he was named after his mom's russian ex-boyfriend, who's name is dmitri but was always called misha so his mom just decided to do like, that exact same thing for him. CLOSE second is the classic "arrested for the crime of acting like an indie film protagonist by reading a book on a bank's roof". And I fully agree with u on wanting a book JUST about the rajneesh stuff. (lmao also lowkey I live in washington too 😂 so many spn blogs are from here for some reason)
ah yes the classics :’)
the fake russian stuff........incredible tbh
also YEAH there are so many spn blogs here! i have a theory that even though spn is largely the midwest gothic aesthetic, the natural cryptid/spooky/twin peaks vibes of the pacific northwest are what push us to the show too

Kripke speaks!
So last weekend I dragged my long-suffering husband to Toledo, Ohio to visit their absolutely amazing art museum (seriously, if you get a chance, visit it; it's stunningly good), but also, because hometown boy Eric Kripke was giving a talk there. A free talk. Two hours from me. I was excite!
Okay, so … Toledo. First time I've actually been in the city, vs. just driving past. It's a ramshackle area, but to explore it is to reveal, in some small way, where Kripke and SPN came from. Smallish and hanging on by its fingernails, Toledo squats like an old cemetery in the shadows of the huge BP Oil refinery. If you head north, you hit Lake Eerie, which—this time of year—isn't awful. If you head south, you're in the middle of nowhere. Every other building seems to be derelict. Toledo's 'historic homes' district is chock full of Victorian painted ladies that have seen far better days, the colors peeling and the yards weedy, but they're still some of the most gingerbreaded, neo-Gothic delights I've seen in a long time.
Tumblr media
( (The stupid watermark-like blur is the back of my phone. Should've rolled down the window, duh.)
The industry in town is the aforementioned oil refinery, glass factories, the University of Toledo and a whiff of tourism. So you end up with this strange amalgam of artiness, decay, and working class valor. I dig it. It's very early-season's SPN. I totally get where Kripke was coming from.
Tumblr media
(A supposedly haunted building in downtown Toledo, the Pythian Castle.)
Kripke himself is an unassuming, warm, funny guy. The first few rows in the museum's auditorium were reserved for his family and friends, including past grade-school teachers. The majority of the audience was SPN fans, quite obviously, and not young ones either. It was a mix of ages, but far and away the crowd skewed older. If anyone yaks on about fandom only being for the young, or that the future of the SPN fandom is the 16-24 year olds, don't believe them. I did a bit of a live-tweet of his SPN-topical points, which I won't repeat here but you can hit my twitter and follow the #KripkeSpeaks tag for the highlights: https://twitter.com/hashtag/kripkespeaks?f=tweets&vertical=default&src=hash Lemme see if I can distill the talk down to a few points here, though. He worked very, very hard to get where he's at, and that hard work—regardless of failure—is what opened a lot of doors. That tenacious Midwest work ethic. No matter how small the job, he did it 200%. He slept on floors, he made huge mistakes, he kept his eyes open for serendipitous forks in the road. You've got to have a freight train mentality, but never … never … think you've got it mastered. Lean into the fear. There were two sticking points in his tenure with SPN that he was ready to quit over: when the WB (the CW's predecessor) wanted to ax the classic rock soundtrack, and in one of the episodes (he didn't specify which one), there was a flashback to young Sam and Dean, and the network didn't want to do it. Kripke simply said, “Then I quit.” And he meant it. “You've gotta mean it, or you have no bargaining chip.” Needless to say, the network caved. But he would've walked over either of those situations if the network hadn't conceded. Kripke always loved comedy, and wrote comedy script after comedy script, to no real avail. But he was getting recognized as someone who did solid work. He was a writer's assistant or some such lower level employee when they needed someone to write a script in a pinch. It was horror, but Kripke shrugged and said “What the hell, I'll do it!” It succeeded far better than any of his comedies. He'd been dreaming and fine-tuning his SPN idea for years, and that horror script got him in front of some big names, finally. They didn't like the idea of the heroes being reporters—it felt like a rehashed “Kolchak, the Night Stalker” to them—but then on the fly, he made the leads brothers. In a muscle car. He plucked inspiration from his Toledo childhood. And the big names perked right up. (The stuff he offered “on the fly” had been notes he'd scribbled in the margins of his script. Never let those gems go; you never know when they'll come in handy!) For me, the biggest take-away was “Show me a confident writer, and I'll show you a bad one.” Now, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't know your worth, that you shouldn't love what you do. Plow forward like a freight train, do your very best work, but never stop learning. If think you're the hottest thing since the Pet Rock, well … whatever happened to those Pet Rocks, anyways? When someone crows too loudly about their own expertise, their own authority, they've likely stopped learning. You miss so many opportunities if you think there's only one way to do things. His next TV adventure, Revolution,, was very stressful and fraught with challenges, but he still did his damnedest to make it succeed. When it got canceled, though, he wasn't disappointed. Timeless was far more of a joy to create. That one, he was sad to see go. Then he showed the trailer for his newest show (to be available on Amazon Prime) and it looks sooooo good. The Boys. He's working with the gang that developed Preacher, and sounds like it has that same iconoclastic, dark-humored vibe. YUM. So Kripke gets to exercise his comedy chops after all! (Though, really, SPN had some fantastic comedy moments too. Who says the horror genre has to take itself so seriously?) He took a handful of questions afterwards, during which he revealed he'd love to participate in the last season/episode if his contract will allow. TULPA THIS SHIT, Y'ALL. I had to split at that point because my husband had been patient enough and I was getting hangry and itching to see the museum, but Kripke hung around for autographs. Like the good egg he is. The industry needs more writers like Kripke. I enjoyed the heck out of Toledo, and him.

An Arranged Marriage Chapter 15
Dean Winchester x Reader
1150 Words
Story Summary:  An AU of sorts. Where hunter’s have communities, and arrange marriages for their young. Y/N is from the Northwest region, arranged to marry Dean, from the midwest region.
Catch Up Here: Masterpost
Tumblr media
Lucifer flashing his red eyes at you, his lips pulled back in a snarl had you curling back on the bed, fear making your hands shake. You knew he was Lucifer, the devil himself, but he had seemed so loose, so at ease. But it had change in once second, reminding you this was the man who could kill thousands of people with a snap of his fingers. And you were his play toy, living in his little house until he decided what he wanted to do with you.
Pacing the room, he mumbled to himself, never loud enough for you to hear what he was saying, but his eyes occasionally flashed red, his emotions getting in the way of his planning. Turning to face you, a smile slowly grew on his face, scaring you almost more than his glowing red eyes did. “I know exactly what I want to do!” He exclaimed, clapping his hands together in excitement. “We’re going to go visit this wonderful little community I made you talk about.”
“No!” You screamed. Sure, you weren’t sure you ever wanted to have anything to do with the communities again, but you knew Lucifer visiting them was not a good thing. It could only bring pain and destruction, and there was no way you would be able to warn them.
Snapping his fingers, your voice immediately vanished. Chuckling, he walked over to you, running his finger along your cheek. “I can’t have you giving my secret away. So, we’ll go, but you won’t be able to talk. Sure, they might think it’s weird. But before they can figure things out, it will all go poof!”
Grateful you hadn’t told him about the wards and sigils on the fences surrounding the compound, you hoped they would be strong enough to keep him out. Or at least give you enough time to figure out how to warn people.
Grabbing you roughly by the arm, Lucifer pulled you to your feet as the room spun before turning black.
Dean’s POV
Following Cas’ directions, I pulled up to a small, lakefront community. A grouping of about five cabins sat at the end of a culd-e-sac, quaint and serene. Nothing like the spot I imagined Lucifer would be holed up in. I figured somewhere dark and gothic, full of pain and torture. This was too light, too cozy for the Devil himself.
Stopping the Impala at the end of the road, I grabbed my gun from the trunk, along with a couple other items. Knowing that nothing would officially take out Lucifer, but I needed something. With Sam by my side, we began moving up the sidewalk, having no other choice. Sure, we were out in the open, but there was no cover in the back of the houses either. Passing each one, we searched for a sign that he was there.
The first cabin was full of toys, cozy and messy. Shaking my head no, we continued on to the next. An old woman sat in the living room, knitting away as classic rock played on the radio. Shrugging my shoulders in surprise, I made Sam move on to the next one.
It was empty, but something seemed off. I couldn’t place my finger on it, but it seemed powerful and old. “This is it. The cabin Lucifer was in.” Cas announced, giving me a heart attack as he popped up beside me. “I can feel his power rolling off it. But he’s no longer here.”
“Cas, dude!” I exclaimed. “You were supposed to be figuring out what his plans were! What are you doing here?”
“I found what I was looking for, and came to see if you needed help.” He answered. “But you no longer need help as both Lucifer and Y/N are gone, and have been gone for at least an hour.”
“Damn it!” I exclaimed. We had been so close, but Y/N had slipped through my grasp. The longer she was with Lucifer, the more scared I became for her. We had to find her, and soon. “Where could he have taken her?”
“I think that’s only one of our problems.” Cas stated solemnly.
“What’s worse than Y/N being in Lucifer’s grasp?” I grumbled, as I placed my gun back in the trunk, slamming it harder than normal.
“The fact that Lucifer is planning on starting the Apocalypse once again. By using the croatoan curse. He has a storage building clear full of the virus, and is in the process of seeding clouds with it.”
Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath. This was worse, much worse than I imagined. If I went off looking for Y/N, it could mean the end of the world. But if I went to stop the spread of the virus, Y/N could be dead before I even attempted to find her.
Your POV
As soon as the spinning stopped, you fell to your knees, retching the little food left in your system. Taking a couple of deep breaths, you looked up to see Lucifer staring down at you in disgust. “I forgot exactly how weak and pathetic you humans are. But at least you all will be taken care of soon.”
Opening your mouth to speak, you frowned when no sound came out. “Yep, you’re still mute.” He assured you, before turning to stare at the fence in front of him. Looking up, you realized you were back home, or at least the only home you had known before you were married off.
Seeing it now, all dark and dreary, made you realize exactly how much you didn’t miss it. You didn’t miss the grim way everyone moved about, the almost military like childhood that had seemed normal once upon a time. It was exactly the same as when you had left. Instead it had been you that had changed.
“So, this is where you grew up? I almost feel sorry for you.” He muttered, his arms crossed, his feet spread as he stared at the tall brick fence in front of him. Even though the warding’s were invisible, you knew he could probably see them. “Did they realize how pathetic these warding’s are? Sure, they might keep out the Demons or Vampires, but they are no match for me.”
Waving his hand, you watched in dismay as they burned a bright red before vanishing, no doubt leaving your old home easily accessible to the most powerful and evil being on the planet. “Let’s go have some fun!” He exclaimed, reaching over and grabbing your hand. With no other choice, you were pulled behind him, fearing for the lives of the people who had at one time been close to you.
