I know I said it as kind of a joke but also. I was very serious about it. Anyway. Here’s some au-where-Syb-starts-bustin-kneecaps-to-make-money Syb meeting Micah before the events of canon! anyway ouughg i hope i did micah justice <3 <3 <3

Sybille ain’t ever been to Atlanta before, and she ain’t sure she cares for it.

She understands why her bosses have decided to do business with one of the gangs here. They have a surplus of guns, the New Orlean Mafia is looking to buy, and this gang’s gun-runner went to school with one of the bosses kids, so there’s the hope of a mutually beneficial relationship to be built here.

What she doesn’t understand is why they brought her of all people along as security. They know she prefers to do her work in the French Quarter, shaking down business owners for the money they forgot they owed. But she supposes she’s proved herself reliable enough for Louie to take her on a little field trip.

She’s far too overdressed for the night club where the deal is going down. Black tie tucked into her neatly tailored pinstripe vest. Her slacks match and the press of her button up is so crisp and sharp that it could cut a man. The only reason she was allowed to forgo the blazer was because it interfered with her movement. She sticks out like a sore thumb, but she’s here on Family business, and she finds comfort in the decorum. Bordellos and dive bars are her comfort zone. Modern clubs, not so much.

She watches the door to the private room where Louie and the Atlanta gang leader have since retired to conduct business. She just wishes she could hear what was going on in the private room. She doesn’t know these Atlantans -- doesn’t trust them -- and the fact that she isn’t in there being Louie’s shadow unnerves her. Keeping Louie safe is her responsibility and she can’t do her fuckin’ job if he can’t see what he’s doing. But even if she had her ear pressed against the door, she wouldn't be able to hear shit.

The music thrums so loudly it makes her bones vibrate and pulses in time with the strobing multicolor lights. Louie had told her to relax, wet her whistle, on him -- and her pussy if she felt so inclined -- just make sure she’s sharp and sober tomorrow when the trade happens.

But she’s a guard dog, first and foremost. Always alert and on watch.

So she sits at the bar instead, watching that door in the reflection of the mirror while she smokes and nurses a bourbon on the rocks.

A young woman around her age comes up to the bar beside her and orders two drinks. While she waits, she props her elbow up on the counter and faces Sybille. “Where’s the party?” she asks.

Without looking away from the mirror, Sybille takes a drag from her cigarette, tapping ashes into a nearby tray. “Look somewhere else, cherie,” she says, exhaling the smoke. “Ain’t interested.”

“Well that’s sure as shit presumptuous,” the woman scoffs. “I thought you people from New Orleans were supposed to be friendly. What happened to southern hospitality?”

That gets Sybille’s attention. Her brows arch downwards and her jaw clenches. She turns in her stool slightly to look at the woman who knows a little too much for her liking. Especially considering she doesn’t know shit about her.

Her eyes land on the woman standing next to her and two things rise to the forefront of her mind. This woman is dangerous. Knowledgeable, is the first. This woman is beautiful, is the second.

Infuriating how those two things tend to go hand in hand.

Dark hair falls in thick curtains framing her face; a proud, strong jawline with a pointed chin tilted up in confidence. Her features are soft, delicate. Round eyes, full lips, and a petite nose that slopes gracefully down her face -- but it’s all undercut by a certain sharpness. Not one of her features, no but what’s hiding underneath. A sharpness made clear by the way she carries herself, the worn leather of her jacket, and the holes torn into the tight jeans she wears.

This woman has edges. Lots of them. And all of them sharpened into razors. A rose with thorns too large to prune. A piece of obsidian glass, beautifully reflective, and capable of rending flesh from bone like it’s butter.

The kind of woman that, were Sybille not working, she might have invited into her bed to show a little southern comfort to. But as things stand, this woman has just declared herself a threat.

“I ain’t the one doin’ the hostin’. Less of a need to be hospitable,” Sybille drawls. Casually as she can, she slips her hand into her vest pocket, her fingers brushing against her brass knuckles. “You on the other hand seem to know who I am, yet you ain’t introduced yourself. Ain’t much room for you to talk about southern hospitality.” She downs her bourbon, the ice cubes clinking against the glass and she flags down the bartender for another. “So, who the hell’re you?”

“Calm down,” the woman says. “So long as no funny shit happens in that room you’re watching, you can consider us coworkers. I work with Benny. I’m the one gettin’ you your goods. Name’s Micah.”

What Sybille doesn’t know is that nearly a decade later, when shit in New Orleans hits the fan and she has to disappear, she’ll meet Micah again deep in the heart of Montana’s mountains.

Esther had known about John's relationship with the woman in front of her, had known it ended when he came to Montana but she never expected to actually meet her. Let alone be rescued by her, that she would be the deputy tearing through Joseph's little project.

Micah Hale, the woman John had planned to marry before Joseph sunk his claws into him. The woman he'd left behind. Esther wondered how much John had told the deputy about her. Breathing heavily over the corpse of the Peggie guard she'd killed staring at Micah, she swallowed hard, pushing aside her jealous uncertainty. Getting home was more important, the rest could be figured out later.

"Please tell me this is a rescue?"

Popping open another beer while sat on top of the cooler, Kit watched as Micah let off arrow after arrow with smooth precision into the targets, despite the fact that the other woman had also partaken in one too many drinks at this point.

Pale eyes steered over sun tanned skin and lithe muscle, and despite the drink in her hand she still felt thirsty with a sensation that couldn't be quenched by drink alone. Taking a deep breath she took another sip for dutch courage and walked over to the huntress in her midst.

"Got quite the skill with a bow."

Micah didn't say much in return, she rarely did. If Kit was being honest she kind of preferred things that way, especially when the inebriation hit.

"Think you could show me how to use one? I promise I make for an excellent student. I'm a hands on learner," Kit said with a wink.

Reading update

Based on the cover, I was originally pretty skeptical of this book, but then I read all of Roan Parrish's other books and now she's one of my favorite authors. This is one of her earlier books (maybe her first? not sure) but it's really good. It's got my favorite things—complicated relationship with father and brothers + traumatized young man who doesn't know how to love himself. Also gay sex. Genuinely though, I really loved Daniel's and Rex's love story.

Now this one surprised me. This was an Illumicrate book which I fully expected to not enjoy, because the summary didn't sound very interesting. But it was GREAT. Listen, my opinion that will get me canceled is that I typically don't read books with female protagonists anymore, because they're so often written horribly. This book has wonderfully written women. The world is really unique and cool, and it was just generally an interesting take on the When is a monster not a monster? Oh, when you love it trope.

I read Young Mungo (Douglas Stuart's second novel) last year and loved it, so I snatched this book up when I found it used in my local bookstore. It was pretty much exactly what I expected: sad but lovely. I enjoyed Young Mungo more, but that's because I enjoy romance more than mother-son relationships. It's not a knock on this book at all, which is a devastating portrayal of a child trying to parent his alcoholic mother. Anyway yeah, read it. And read Young Mungo, too.

This was such a fun read! It doesn't break any new ground and it's completely predictable, but that's fine, it's an adorable YA romcom, and the point is to see the end coming from a mile away. I laughed out loud quite a few times as I was reading, and I was definitely rooting for Micah and Elliot. I also am always a sucker for stories that have an evils-of-fame storyline.

So this is a series that I used to love. It's very All Creatures Great and Small, only it's with human doctors and it takes place in Northern Ireland in the 1960s. I don't know if it's that my tastes have changed or if the series just isn't as good anymore, but I really didn't enjoy this book. At all. Patrick Taylor is...not actually a very good writer? Like he's constantly clumsily info-dumping and it drove me crazy in this book. The others must have been the same way but I probably overlooked it because I enjoyed them more.

The sequel to In the Middle of Somewhere, which follows Daniel's older brother Colin. Which was a brave fucking move on Parrish's part, because in In the Middle of Somewhere, Colin is a horrible asshole to Daniel. He's cruelly picked on Daniel ever since Daniel was a young teen, and without going into a lot of details, it was all pretty homophobic (to the point of a physical altercation). He's just a dick, basically.

Anyway, I guess I can't really talk about this one without spoiling the first one, but as it turns out, Colin is gay, has known it for many years, knew it when Daniel came out to him, and was still a dick for all that time. He is very very closeted and wants to please his father EVEN MORE than Daniel does in the first book. I actually like this one even more than the first book, because Parrish takes this character who is nasty and awful and turns the whole thing around. It's really a master class in unreliable narration (CS Pacat might be the only other author I can think of who pulls it off this well). Colin's and Rafael's love story is really beautiful, too.

Ginn Hale! Gay demons! Fantasy noir! Blood! Hurt/comfort! What's there not to like!

This is actually two novellas in one book. The first novella is from Belimai's (the demon's) POV, and is a mystery. The second is a sequel from Harper's (the detective's) POV and deals with the fallout from the first novella. I absolutely loved both but that's not saying anything because I love everything Ginn Hale writes.

This book was weird as hell but really good. The basic plot is, two young men help a goddess escape captivity, but that just like...does not do it justice. The beauty of this book is in its prose and its weirdness. And its slow burn romance. Highly recommended, but it's not light reading. Also isn't that cover gorgeous? I spent a lot of time just staring at it.

Like the cover says, the prequel to They Both Die at the End. It's not as good. And there was some really forced plot stuff that made me roll my eyes. Still a decent read, especially if you liked the first one.

I'm currently reading this one! I'm already loving how it's building on the events of the second book, and appreciated the wonderfully gory opening, haha.

And now for something a little different ...

I was thinking about my favorite shows, and I noticed a particular trope that connects them. I want to talk about it, because I think it's interesting, though I might be the only one. However, if you believe Game of Thrones was nothing but a misogynistic dudebro power fantasy and/or you think that Teen Wolf was nothing but shirtless young men and dub step, there is nothing in this post for you. To be fair, I have reservations about the writing of both shows, especially in the later seasons, but I also think a lot of the writing was deliberate, considered and worth examining.

I want to talk about The Good Man. (I use the male noun because I seldom, if ever, see this applied to female characters. That's another meta entirely.)

Eddard Stark is presented in the show as a good person. He is respected by his family, his peers, his vassals, and even his enemies. While he does make some serious mistakes (things would have gone differently if he had decided to investigate the deserter's claims in the first episode rather than simply dismissing them in a rush to execution), few viewers have claimed that good people must be without flaw. He has principles to which he is devoted, such as loyalty to his country and personal responsibility for those with power, e.g. "He who passes the sentence should swing the sword." He has compassion even for individuals like Joffrey.

Scott McCall is presented in his show as a good person. He is respected by his family, his peer, and even his enemies. While he does make some serious mistakes (things would have gone differently if he had refused to go with Stiles during Wolf Moon), few viewers have claimed that good people must be without flaw. He has principles to which he is devoted, such as the right for everyone to have a life and personal responsibility for those with power, e.g. "And you know this thing's gonna get out of control. That makes me responsible." He has compassion even for individuals like Peter Hale.

So why does Ned Stark die and Scott McCall survive? Of course, they appear in different stories existing in different genres, and Westeros is a little more brutal than twenty-first century Northern California, but I propose that there is a specific test that both narratives make of their Good Men, which Ned fails and Scott passes.

In Game of Thrones, this test occurs in The Kingsroad (1x02) and in Teen Wolf, this test occurs in Abomination (2x04).

We don't get to see Robert's Rebellion in the show, but we do get to hear a lot about it. Robert rides all the way to Winterfell because he is absolutely sure that the one person he can trust to help him hold his kingdom together is Ned. Ned doesn't want to leave Winterfell, but he is torn by his sense of responsibility to the kingdom and his personal loyalty to Robert. It's the suspicion of Jon Arryn's murder that pushes Ned into taking the position of Hand. Ned will discover the truth and if it is, bring the murdered to the King's Justice.

By the end of The Kingsroad, Ned should understand that there is no King's Justice, not anymore. The marriage between Robert and Cersei is a sham, Cersei is vindictive and cruel, Joffery a spoiled brat, but, most importantly, Robert is not the same friend he was twenty years ago. The death of Lady is an injustice, agreed to by Robert simply to buy himself some peace and quiet. The death of Micah is a greater injustice, one that doesn't even have a degree of dignity of being the result of a direct order. The Hound cut the butcher's boy down like he was chopping wood.

But Ned does nothing with this new knowledge. He sees the corruption and clings to his principles -- his responsibility to the realm and his personal loyalty -- that stand opposed to it, while not adjusting his behavior or expectations accordingly. This is the first time, but it's not the last: the realm's financial status, the useless tournament, the sending of assassins against Daenerys, Robert's gross behavior, etc. He will keep believing that the realm is worth defending as if it were twenty years ago and that his friend is still the same regardless of any experience to the contrary, and Ned will die for his refusal to change.

Note, I don't blame Ned for being tricked by Littlefinger, a childhood friend of his wife's, because I don't blame people for being deceived by liars, but there was plenty of evidence from which Ned could have learned he had to alter how he manifested his principles.

Which is why Scott survived and Ned didn't. Up until the end of Abomination, Scott keeps trying to work with Derek while maintaining his principles, which includes independence and saving lives. Yet, even after Stiles heroically held a paralyzed Derek in a pool for hours, even after Scott arrived and drove away the kanima, Derek demonstrates he is still deeply mistrustful of everyone (including himself), Derek demonstrates that lethal force is his go-to strategy ("When I find it, I'm going to kill it"), and that he is blinded by his hatred for the Argents. Note: I don't think there's anything wrong with Derek hating the Argents but there is a problem when he won't look past that anger for the greater good. If Derek had been willing to work with the Argents, it might have scuttled Gerard's plans. Then, Scott gets up close and personal with Gerard, which is painful and scary, but it does gives Scott something he can use against Gerard.

And here is the point: he doesn't share this with Derek, when he's tried to work with Derek in the past. Instead, he pretends to work with Gerard by infiltrating Derek's pack in order to be in a position where he can use the cancer against Gerard. Scott's principles still remains; he wants to resolve the conflict with as little death as possible. However, he changes how that principle manifests in his actions when it is clear that his previous method -- working openly and honestly with Derek -- not only isn't working, but it can't work.

To summarize, principles, the hallmarks of the Good Man, only work if they are used to guide the good person's reactions to the situation at hand. They don't work if they determine the good person's reactions. Ned's principles were set twenty years ago and remained static. Scott was willing to change how he achieved his desired result if his previous attempts weren't working. (As a digression, this is a rebuttal of Peter's insincere "shades of gray" criticism of Scott.) The comparison isn't flawless by any means, but I do think it's enlightening.
