thinking abt how merlin is the hero and the sidekick and the love interest and the villain and he's even somewhat the storyteller he's genre-aware throughout he's the only one who sees and manipulates the strings of the narrative he's the only one left to tell the story after it's over... he's every archetype at once and without him there's no story at all. it must be lonely. it must be exhausting

AVERAGE “MERLIN” B PLOT: morgana is slowly unraveling as she struggles to reconcile her identity as someone who lives in a position of unique privilege and unique precarity, in the lap of luxury in the palace but also under the thumb of her abusive genocidal father figure who could have her executed if discovered. she knows that her position grants her special access to end the genocide of her people by assassinating him, but due to her compassionate, empathetic nature, she finds it difficult to contend with having the blood of such a complicated figure in her life on her hands, even as she is nevertheless hyperaware that his death would be a net positive for society. and also she is the most captivating beautiful gorgeoust woman you have ever seen.
AVG MERLIN A PLOT: arthur calls merlin a dingleberry and bops him on the head

colin morgan was literally my age when he started bbc merlin. could you imagine being 21 and you get cast as gay twink merlin and every day you come to work and all you do is joke around with some blonde man and pretend to do magic and ugly cry and talk to a cgi dragon that’s not there because it’s cgi so you’re really just yelling at tennis balls. and the whole time you’re doing some dumb voice because your character is english. and you’re only 21 and are in all likelihood sleeping on a bed with no headboard and regularly eating cereal for dinner.

¡Traducción al español!
Hola!

i love your merlin hateposting. i truly can't believe that show was real and people just watched it and were like this is good :)
i know right it's crazy like i haven't watched that show since it ended (and since realized that i was only putting myself thru such a harrowing and frustrating ordeal bc i was in lesbians w katie mcgrath) but i can still clearly recall the overtly reactionary politics bc it was so unsubtly blatantly embedded in the shows narrative, like it's impossible to separate the wacky fantasy sitcom hijinks from the genocide framing the entire show from the very first scene that merlin steps into camelot and witnesses a public execution. you'll often see people being like "yeah the cgi and costumes and acting and general quality is all shit but that just makes me love the show more because it's so humble and unassuming. the little bbc monarchist propaganda vehicle that could!" and that's so crazy to me because yes, the budget is clearly $5 and a potato, but that is absolutely not why people criticize it??? like, you can keep shipping your abusive boss x beleaguered employee (and also the boss in question is a monarch who would have the employee executed if he knew the truth about his identity and despite knowing this fact the employee nonetheless dedicates his life to the people who are facilitating the genocide that demands he hide his true identity from everyone in his life) from the Genocide Apologia Show, but if you're an adult who is still enmeshed in this fandom, you're completely brainless at best and extremely reactionary (and possibly a literal monarchist??) at worst.

bbc merlin worked because those men are both ugly hot and could not possibly pass for american if they gave it their all. shows these days with english period characters always cast actors who look like could live in la. colin morgan looks like if he even set foot in los angeles he’d die immediately from exposure. maybe bradley could survive but we all know he doesn’t belong there. it’s like how riverdale works because kj apa just looks like he’s failing calculus and has sex with men. sorry i didn’t mean to say it like that. but.

thinking about the way arthur looks to merlin whenever he disagrees with his father or in any moment of internal conflict and how he does this as early as episode five when lancelot is punished. just like. merlin is his moral compass, his impartial party, the person that doesn't expect anything from him but will tell him when he's wrong but he's also the person standing at arthur's side when arthur dares to stand up to his father, he's the servant that isn't afraid to point out when uther's wrong and side with arthur, and arthur trusts him implicitly.
