Biodiverse is an LGBT+ science discord server! everyone from all science fields and levels of expertise are welcome! you don’t need to be a scientist to join, just as long as you love science and want to know more about it!
we have text channels for a wide variety of science topics! there is a focus on natural sciences (mycology, botany, biology, etc.) as well as topics like chemistry and astronomy; there’s something for everyone!
there’s also fun events and community projects! this includes weekly trivia contests, occasional movie/documentary streams, study sessions, and art contests to celebrate server milestones! and honestly whatever random fun activity we feel like doing LOL
we recently started a community project forum, where members can share in depth information about any science topic of their choosing. it’s basically an info-dump channel, and personally i’m very excited to read everyone’s entries!

Interesting article by Xavier from Archéo'Japon, overviewing the history and beliefs surrounding May 5th Kodomo no hi 子供の日 (children's day) / Tango no Sekku 端午の節句 (Japanese take on Duanwu festival) traditions.
Original article is in French but really worth a read through auto-translate if you wish to learn more about the origins of some of the Kodomo no hi rituals :)

"Traditionally, there is a particular flower associated with each of the four seasons. The peony is connected to spring because that’s typically when it’s in bloom. Summer is connected to the lotus, fall to the chrysanthemum, and winter to the plum blossom. In Asian culture and in feng shui, we look at time and nature as cyclical, like a wheel, and these four flowers are often depicted together to show the whole cycle of the year through the four seasons."

fuck it. plaguesona
#i thought of this a couple weeks ago on the bus a couple seats away from someone loudly coughing into the open air#i think something snapped and i decided to make a fuckin. medieval ass plague sona. horseman of pestilence fursona#this is also why i was asking abt animals with medical symbolism.. originally i wanted a two headed snake like the staff of caduceus#but it turns out thats actually hermes symbol. the real symbol for medicine is the rod of asclepius which looks pretty similar#the difference is that theres only one snake and its twined around a stick. ironically mercy from overwatch's weapons are named after#the caduceus despite the misconception LMAOOO#snakes were the most consistent medicine related animal i could find even across multiple cultures so it couldve really worked#if i could actually draw scalies.. one of my earliest sketches had a cobra with a syringe at the end of its tail like a rattlesnake#and it had markings similar to the syringe tube but i didnt have much else going on so i scrapped it#i was also recommended animals with less obvious ties to medicine like jellyfish and horseshoe crabs and learned something new ^_^#im not confident i could pull off a non-mammal furry but they were really good ideas i might put into smth else.. i also thought of#axolotls bc of their regenerative thing and growing back limbs but i think that would suit smth like a surgeon or amputation...#possums and bats were also an option bc theyre actually really resistant to most diseases like rabies but i feel like ppl wouldnt know that#if they saw it so it looks a little ironic at a glance. rabbits rats and mice were my second option bc of animal testing and lab rats#less obvious reference but the moon rabbit in chinese mythology is loosely connected to medicine bc it makes the elixir of life#otherwise lab mice in a pharmacy / modern medicine setting seemed fitting and jerboa tails remind me of cotton buds#and. ironically. jerboas are more closely related to elephants than rats and mice. can you believe it#my art#myart#my oc#sona#plaguesona#cottonbud#fur#furry art#character design#ref sheet#oc ref sheet

One thing that always bothered me in high school (and still does, years after!) was touring a college and the tour guides went, "as a college freshman, you'll probably be susceptible to the Freshman Fifteen, so be careful!" as my tour group passed the college's gym complex (it was actually a pretty impressive gym, though, but that's beside the point).
Like, that just bothers me because... I wonder what is so different between American high school and American college that might contribute to weight gain (sarcasm intended)! Even taking 101 classes is very different from the classes you might take in high school, I don't think it's fair to hold your body to the standards you had in high school.
Absolutely, I think it's important to prioritize health for your body, but weight gain associated with major lifestyle changes are normal and why I remember this so clearly is because the threat of weight gain was treated as something that ought to scare us straight. If you gain weight in college, there's a reason why, and it isn't a horrific ordeal that you ought to feel ashamed of.

Kai raised Nya
And what I mean by ‘raised’ I mean: Of course they had babysitters. But Kai is the one who mostly nurtured Nya. Sure the Babysitters and the Village could have been providing for these two, but what about the other needs?
I imagine he was the one who sometimes cooked for her when the other babysitters were busy. The one who probably helped her with homework, helped her with chores, did his and her laundry. We already see that he at least played games with Nya.
Something I usually do with my little sister is not only help prepare her clothes for school but also prep the table so we can both eat. (Sometimes for the entire family) with Nya and Kai obviously leaning towards Asian cultures, usually the older siblings are seen as the Secondary Parents.
So in a way, he DID raise Nya, not in a sense of a ‘parent’ where they provide the needs and support for the child. But in a way that a brother could possibly provide. Love, Care and Respect.
I would also imagine that the Babysitters never really stayed for long since they have their own homes and families to go back to. Especially since both Nya and Kai remark ‘it was just me and my sibling’ cause most of the time It was just Kai and Nya.
That’s just my interpretation on the ‘Kai raised Nya’ thing. It’s more of an elder sibling instinct than a parenting instinct.

Doctor Beverly Crusher @SpaceDocMom There's no such thing as a "bad" macronutrient. Your body needs carbs, fats, and protein to live. Your era's capitalistic corporations really love demonizing macronutrients to take your money from you. Ignore the nonsense and eat what works for you and your health needs. emojis: black heart, blue heart, masked 2:34 PM · Oct 8, 2023

I hope all KidLit sees the light.

As a KidLit writer I left Twitter when the madness became very bad in 2015, and I was blasted for not liking the book "George," about a trans child. Everything I've published since then has been under various pseudonyms (different ones for the different genres I write in).
I'm lucky. Other authors and illustrators were blacklisted, or their publishers were harassed until the authors' books were canceled.
I hope after the Cass Review and all else that's happening now revealing the truth about the harm of medical and psychological transitioning children is finally being heard, KidLit will come to its senses. Though how long that'll take, I can't guess.
I also hope Rachel Rooney's book is reissued and becomes a stellar hit.
