Fic Writing Review 2023 🌈
tagged by @itwoodbeprefect - i have also been thinking about this so thank you for taking the initiative!
tagging @faorism @gallantrejoinder if you'd care to do this in any form (including as writing/art review)!
Words and Fics (on ao3) 📚
words posted: 52,220, apparently. Which is actually... basically last year's but minus 10k because I didn't do H50 Big Bang this year, because med school. most things in my life now can be stated as 'because med school'. (actually I just realised I didn't do it last year either, but that was because I was already finishing a 10k H50 fic. so my point stands)
fics posted: either 6 or 29, depending on whether one counts the advent calendar as one fic or 24. plus 3 posted only on Tumblr.
first fic: love don't treat you like that (babe, I'm letting you know) (H50). on the NINTH of january, apparently. i've already lost my first-fic-of-the-year contest to last year, unless i unexpectedly finish something today.
last fic: Advent Calendar 2023 / ...Zaph Kilkane, the pre-eminent climate scientist of the 22nd century...
-
Ships and Fandoms ⚓
would you believe I literally did not repeat a fandom this year, outside of the advent calendar. and this year's AC had the most fandoms since 2019.
Hawaii Five-0 (McDanno)
NCIS: LA (Sallen)
Starsky & Hutch (S/H)
House MD (Hilson)
MASH (Punnihawk)
and then AC-only ones:
Star Trek (Spirk)
The Man From UNCLE (Napollya)
911 (Buddie)
Due South (i don't know ship names. are there ship names? Fraser/RayK)
Good Omens (Azcrow)
Leverage (thiefsome)
Almost Paradise (Ernesto/Alex. alesto. i'm coining it)
-
Top 5 Fics by Kudos 🏆
I mean, I have 6 posted fics that can be kudosed separately.
love don't treat you like that (babe, I'm letting you know) (H50)
When You're Loving Me (That's When I'm Loving You) (NCIS: LA)
Advent Calendar 2023 (see above. nine fandoms)
my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime / could never do you justice in reason or rhyme (House MD)
Finding A Cure In You (S&H)
-
Top 5 Favorite Fics 💖
okay, I'm going to count distinct chapters of the advent calendar for this. in no particular order and subject to mood change:
When You're Loving Me (That's When I'm Loving You) (NCIS: LA) - I cited this as a contender for my favourite fic I've written a couple months ago, so obviously it has to go in the year's. what can i say, fake dating is an immaculate trope, and this also all came onto the page very easily which is always vaguely miraculous.
there you go pulling me right back in (H50) - sometimes vague prompts i've had down for ages write up as something that's. fine, but a bit clunky, and I just have to move on bc it's the advent calendar and a new fic each day. sometimes I start writing them and they spring into life with joyous delight. or in this case, uninhibited grumpiness and love.
singing yesterday's songs wishing i could be with you tonight (MASH) - the one that didn't make it into the top 5 kudosed, I assume partially due to being locked and partially due to being a serious tone, not terribly shippy, and Peg POV. But I've had some version or other of it for a long time, it's one of those stories I'm genuinely proud of, and I was glad to finally post it.
Totally Normal (Due South) - it's fun. it was fun. I was slightly nervous about it, because the only prior Due South thing I'd written was Dief POV and this was Fraser and RayK POV and the first time writing either of those, but it turns out watching + liveblogging four and two seasons, respectively, of a character in four months is. enough to cement their voices in my head. it was unexpectedly easy and also. fun.
Festive Spice (MUNCLE) - i just think it epitomises the advent calendar. in the words of coolbreezemage, 'yesssss bake cakes and kiss your partner'.
HMs:
Finding A Cure In You (S&H) - this doesn't make it to the above list due to the fact that I haven't actually managed to reread it since I posted it. but just for the amount of time I spent with it, how different it is to my usual M.O. of writing, and the weird way I wrote it (entirely in the notes app, with almost zero rereading while writing), I have to somehow mention it.
A Thousand Words / To Be Spared (Good Omens) - I don't know if they're favourite but I do think they're good. and the format of to be spared was pleasingly experimental and i think it worked.
-
Fandom Fic Events 🤝
also the Starsky & Hutch SHarecon zine! which the zine still holds copyright on, but will be posted in April.
-
Projects for 2024 👀
mmm gonna sort this differently and also ramble
Ones that will definitely be finished in 2024 and if they aren't you have free rein to come to my house and tie me to a chair come November: MUNCLE wip, The Unwitting Truth Affair/The Honesty Affair, I haven't actually decided which title yet;
Starsky & Hutch, the still-unnamed Huggy & Pete wip.
Ones I have both hope and some amount of faith will be finished in 2024 and if they aren't you have free rein to come into my inbox and harass me about them: Hawaii Five-0 wip, Much Ado About Something (*salutes squares*);
other Hawaii Five-0 wip, state of disrepair. yes, I'm manifesting state of disrepair 2024. probably november/december 2024, but i'm manifesting it anyway;
Leverage wip, all that I want is a kind heart to haunt
Ones I would like to be finished in 2024, and if my brain decides it likes them might be, but all you have free rein for is to politely ask me about them once per business month: Hawaii Five-0 cath/steve/danny pwp, Wait A Minute Let Me Take You There;
horny S&H wip, Previews Of Your Body Driving Me Insane;
S&H Vanessa coda, so cordial / so rotten (don't ask me);
Good Omens wip, love won't you be as you've always been
Ones I don't expect to finish in 2024 but would like to get some words down in: angsty S&H wip, Relentless As The Rain;
ridiculous undercover H50 wip, Four Seasons of Love;
other ridiculous H50 wip, The Irritating, Annoying, Infuriating, (Effective) Seduction Techniques of One Steven J. McGarrett;
SPN ..wip? depending on the time limit on 'progress'?, Smells Like Turpentine.
vague thoughts: i'd like to write a full-length (for whatever value of that. the AC ones actually were full-length, especially the second one, but what I really mean is AC-independent) due south fic. they're very weird and i enjoyed writing them, and I'd also like to write something with RayV in it. maybe if I successfully inspired @itwoodbeprefect to write new ds, when she does that it will inspire me to write something, and we can set up a ping-pong game. no, wait, that's mixing fandoms.
I expect more MUNCLE fic. this one's already 3.5k and rocketing along, and i'm only two-thirds of the way through season 1. what form that will take i don't know at this stage but we'll see.
....i was discussing the vague concept of house/h50 crossover fic with squares literally yesterday and on the one hand I haven't written a crossover since 2014 and also don't want that to be my legacy, but on the other hand i think there is at least a 50% chance it's going to stick in the back of my brain and keep niggling.

Xiao doesn't know he can get addicted to love.
How could he? It's not like you realise you're craving something when you don't have it. So the first time it's entirely by accident. It takes a lot for him to get like this, to get vulnerable enough. So much of your human lifespan that he feels indescribably guilty, actually, that you've wasted so many years on worrying at the stone wall of vulnerabilities he'd erected so many years ago.
But, diligently—and so humanly—you had.
And there is still so much of him that screams that he doesn't deserve it. That first time, he won't ever forget—bristling with karmic debt, feeling it ooze out of him like a shameful shadow. It rolled down his back in drops of sweat and beaded in his eyes like tears. With every wet, strangled gasp that left his throat it released into the air like a noxious gas, and he waited, body tensed like a loaded weapon, waited for it to kill you.
And it didn't. And it doesn't.
It feels impossible. Nothing should feel this good. It's slow and hard, in the way that it's deliberate. That's the thing that makes Xiao want to cry. You're deliberately touching him. On purpose, you love him.
Your hands are deliberate; there is no chance you'll forget it's his skin you're touching as you knead it between your fingers like fresh bread, fitting your fingers between his ribs, rubbing slow circles over his thighs, tracing the scars that welt up under the flesh. Your fingers paint fire over his body, and disrobing feels like simultaneously the most natural thing in the world, and also something that makes Xiao want to run and hide.
His own skin seems to scream at him. But you must only hear birds.
Soft kisses, dotted down his sternum as your hands skim over the scarred plane of his torso, thumbs circling. Can you feel the way his stomach tenses under the flex of your digits, the way his breath hitches? His ribs creak and expand with each shallow breath. It's dangerous, and he thinks—perhaps he could grow addicted to this.
How awful. To be addicted to something that will be gone in the blink of an eye.
The touches and the kisses, the little whispers are good, but being inside you is something almost indescribable. It's a slow, conscious effort, something almost akin to a play like in the theatre that Zhongli and Hu Tao frequent on their rare days off. There are roles and lines and actions to be memorised, and he does, opening you up—spit, fingers, the help of some slippery oil in a glass vial you produced from your pocket. This, too, is deliberate—the whole time is Xiao knowing what he's opening you up for, and being struck dumb all over again before he's even—
even—
"Are you ready?" you murmur, and Xiao's mouth works soundlessly for a moment because how could he be ready for something like this? He doesn't even know what it's going to feel like. How can he be ready for that?
But what he is ready to do is trust you. With his life, with everything. In so many ways, he's already given you everything. So he nods, trembly and short.
"Can I hear a yes?" Your hands stroke up and down his thighs, the sensitive skin on the inside, and Xiao huffs out a strangled breath.
"Yes," he grits out, teeth mashing together. If it's going to be anyone, it's going to be you. And you smile at him, all lips and no teeth, eyes crinkling in bows and Xiao swallows past the unidentifiable lump in his throat.
(It is only unidentifiable because he is a coward. He knows, deep down, exactly what it is).
You take him in your hand; he's already painfully hard, had been, really, since you started kissing. It's mortifying, this show of desire, but he's helpless before it as you move your hand slowly up and down. You position him between your legs, and he feels the soft, the hot and wet, spit and oil and something else, and it hits him—
He slides in. Xiao sees your thighs shake with the effort, his hands slipping under clumsily to grab at them to help; it feels like all his own strength as been sapped, and as soon as your body swallows the tip of his cock all he can do is slump back against the sweat-damp mattress, mouth open in a silent gasp before it releases in a high, broken whimper like shattered glass.
Arduously, you take him all. By the time you're practically sitting on him he's already an utter mess, squirming and hot under you, his hands scrabbling frantically for purchase on your thighs. His nails leave little railroads behind on your skin.
"Oh," he moans, head tipped back. "Oh—gods—"
"Xiao..." Your fingers trace over his; he can feel your own shaking. "You feel so good."
He blinks his eyes open, shocked to find them already blurry. "I—I do?" he rasps, pathetically, hating himself for it, but your radiant smile makes him ascend.
"Feel like I was made for you," you mumble, and Xiao's heart cracks because how can you, your mortal form, how can you be made for him—toxic and rotten and old, so old that he will outlive you by thousands of years? But then you smile weakly, and you say, "or maybe you were made for me," and that feels a lot more palatable. Xiao can believe quite readily that he was put on this earth for no other reason than to please you.
He rocks his hips up weakly, chasing more of that squeezing wet heat, that almost suffocating tightness, and your body jolts and groans. "S-sorry," he wheezes, but his body can't stop, he can't stop, every cell is on fire and you feel so so so good—
He comes far, far too quickly; it's basically over before it's even started, as he thrusts up into you with a shattered gasp. For a moment his head goes wonderfully, blissfully blank, and it feels like the first time in forever he's stopped thinking long enough to relax. He slumps against the mattress, breathing fast, and peers up at you with wide, apprehensive eyes.
"I'm sorry," he says, his voice strangled, weak, pathetic. Self-loathing rises up in a vice, twists up his insides. What a useless tool he proclaims to be. His fingers drop limply from your legs and twist up the bedsheets, avoiding your eye, despising himself. "I can keep going."
Your expression pinches—for the first time, Xiao realises with disconcertion. There had been no trace of disappointment when he'd failed to perform, only now that he offers himself up as a sacrificial lamb for your pleasure. The casual concern makes his head rush.
"It's okay," you say soothingly. "It's a lot. I mean—" You glance down for half a second, but Xiao catches it, follows your gaze. Release drips down from where he's still buried inside you, running languidly down the backs of your thighs. Xiao's face burns, but he's caught between mortification and sudden interest.
A piece of him is inside you. It makes his whole body shiver with satisfaction, like an itch that's finally been scratched. He feels the limp instrument between his legs swell, and it's with more conviction that he says this time, "I can keep going. Please—please allow me..."
Shivering, he reaches a hand up, smooths it up your stomach. Your skin is so smooth and hot, so untouched by the ugliness of war. He wonders how you can stand to look at him, but you can, you do, and he swallows hard as he sits up and presses a stinging kiss to the swell of flesh on the left of your chest. This close he feels your breath hitch.
"If—if you're sure." Your voice has become quiet, shaky. Unsure, for the first time.
"I am." He is so fucking sure—every part of him, apparently, because the heat between his legs is starting to get painful again. "C-can... could I...?"
In answer, you roll your hips against his, testing, slow. He feels like dick twitch inside you, and it shocks him like lightning. It's an odd sensation—a pleasurable burning, feeling momentarily so good that it hurts. Is this normal? He shudders, eyes struggling to focus; every small jolt of him inside you sends shivering bolts of lightning through his body, ones that have him whimpering and gasping much more than before.
It's slightly painful—and it's ridiculous, because Xiao has made friends with agony, had lived through so much of it that he'd come out the other side and regarded it almost as an old friend. But it's a different sort of pain than torture, than brutality, than mindless violence for the sake of it. This is a discomfort he would happily self-inflict.
"Xiao?" you ask, breathlessly. "Does it hurt?"
"Yes," he answers mindlessly, then rushes to correct himself. "Th-that is—it doesn't..." He gathers a sharp breath. "I do not... dislike it."
"Are you sure?"
In answer, he gathers his strength and flips the two of you over. You make a grunt of surprise as your back flops against the mattress, and it takes an awkward few moments of fumbling and sliding sweaty limbs to align yourselves correctly again. Xiao kneels between your legs, keeping himself lifted with his arms on either side of your head. Framing you, like you're a painting. You might as well be.
You stare up at him owlishly.
"I'm sure," he says, then fixes you with an attempt at a flat look. It would probably be more effective if he wasn't blushing madly. "I'm not made of glass, you know. It's far more likely that I'll hurt you rather than the other way around."
"You won't hurt me," you say with so much certainty that it throws him for a loop. Xiao swallows, eyes softening as he gazes down at you. You slip your hand between the both of you and wrap your fingers gently around his cock, and Xiao buries his head in the crook of your neck with a muffled moan. The sound that slips out of him is almost pained, wispy and high as you carefully manoeuvre him back to the heat between your legs.
Sliding back into you is what he imagines heaven must feel like, in the event a wretched creature like him could ever get there. And it burns, every clench and ridge catching on his cock as he pushes back in with a breathless noise, every cell in his body fizzing with life and fire.
"Hah—" The noise slips out like a punch. "Oh, oh..."
"Please." You lift your hips encouragingly, pressing the two of you flush together. "Please move."
The first few thrusts are awkward, but after he manages to pick out a steady sort of rhythm it's so easy to fall back into it. Xiao stares down at you, gobsmacked; is this what you saw, sitting on his waist, looking down? Your head tips back against the sheets, fingers clenching the bedsheets, your lips parted in a helpless little moan. He feels dazed, heavy-limbed: how did you not fall immediately and irrevocably in love?
Oh, he thinks distractedly. Maybe you—
You're getting closer, this time—he's not entirely sure how he can tell, but he just can. Your breathing picks up, gets higher and wispier until you're practically wheezing, and your arm flies up to dig your nails into the foam of hair at his nape, pinpricks of pain to match the sensitivity burning between his legs. Every push in and out of you makes his whole body shudder, makes small, pathetic sounds drift out of him almost absently. It's almost scary, how separated from his own body he feels.
It's something he can only compare to committing absolute violence. Leaving yourself behind like this, to do what must be done.
He has just enough wherewithal to bend his neck, mouthing at your chest, the soft skin under his lips feeling like a miracle, an offence to everything he knows. Your answering groan sends heat rushing between his legs. You're making—he it's because of him, and he's—he's making you feel—
His second orgasm doesn't so much as creep up on him as it does slam through him with barely a seconds' warning. Xiao practically chokes on his, his hips stuttering against yours as his cock twitches inside you, again, and it's so much, too much, that his whole body lights on fire with the oversensitivity. Tears swarm his eyes as he clenches them shut, pressing hard against your collarbone before he slumps, practically boneless.
He can feel you breathing beneath him. Certainly you didn't finish, if the way you're swallowing and breathing hard is any indication. Shame fills him all over again, as soon as the feverish heat retreats. He lifts his head groggily and looks up at you, dread pooling in his stomach—but again, there is no disdain in your expression. Your eyes are wide, mouth parted, but when he locks eyes with you all you do is smile weakly and shrug, a gesture that even Xiao understands to mean it's okay.
Still. It isn't. Not to him.
Through the foggy haze that has settled over his brain, he manages to dredge up two words. Hoarsely, whispered into your skin: "One more."
"W-what?" There's barely time for the shock to slip off your face before Xiao pushes himself up on trembling arms. "Xiao, you—oh!"
The noise you make when he presses his hips flush against you is almost enough to have his cock swelling with interest again. "Wait," you whine, even as your hips arch into him. "Xiao, it's too—you m-must be—"
"I can take it," he grits out, unsure if it's true but beyond willing to find out. He blinks down at you with wet eyes, mouth agape, not thinking to close it, not thinking about whether he looks ridiculous, wanton, or any thousand other things. Only thinking that he wants you, and wants you to feel good. "Please..."
The feeling that rips through him when he rolls his hips against yours almost makes him shriek. It's so much, and a loud buzzing fills his ears as his jaw locks. It needles at him, his skin screaming as he grinds against you, barely thrusting really, just trying to ease himself back into the feeling again. Your expression pinches.
Pleasure pricks through the pain. Xiao groans, effectively brainless, and only one thought drives him forward. He wants to make you come. He wants to see you finish, feel it around him, so he moves his hips again, again, relentlessly, through the overstimulation, through the waves of pleasure that roll over him helplessly. Tears swell up against and spill, and every time he rocks into you he makes a sound like he's been shot through; whimpery and high, wet and pathetic.
A film slides over Xiao's brain. All he can hear is your moans, fast and urgent, and all he can feel is you practically pulsing around him. Nothing should feel this much, he thinks senselessly, and it's only when you put a hand on his face desperately that he realises he's saying all of this aloud, mindless babbling under his breath, a constant stream of consciousness like he'd lost the ability to shut his mouth.
Maybe he has, he thinks distantly, and is that such a bad thing? How can it be a bad thing to be mindless in front of you, to only think about this, it's so good, it hurts but it's so good, he loves it, he loves you—
Still speaking aloud; he can tell by the way your expression slackens, your lip trembles, and you shakily cup his face to bring his lips to yours. He's barely conscious enough to reciprocate, his whole body shuddering with every thrust, and he can feel the quivering vibrations of the both of you moaning into each other's mouths, feel the wetness of saliva and tears, his tears, when was the last time he cried? He'd cry for you, he thinks senselessly. You're worth crying for.
"Please," he begs, not necessarily knowing what he's pleading for anymore. "Please, please, please—"
You tighten around him, and it makes his voice cut out with the noise it makes, and even as he watches through the blurry wet haze of his tears he feels and sees you come undone beneath him, your back arching up to meet him as though you two could possibly get any closer. Your broken-off moans and breathy gasps send Xiao over the edge again with a dry, broken sob.
He's so, so sensitive that even pulling out of you makes him wince and shudder all over again. He watches, dazed, as his own release drips out of you, thankful absently that you thought to put towels down before—before.
You're gasping, hands on his face, a frantic look on your face. "Xiao? Hey. You okay?"
I'm fine, Xiao tries to say, but all that comes out is a breathy whimper. He's still sort of crying, he realises, bringing up a trembling back to touch his wet cheeks. You thumb at his face, the touch almost too much—he wants to curl into his clothes, but of course he has no clothes because he's naked, both of you are—
His face burns with sudden shame. He came three times.
"Did I make you feel good?" he whispers, softly, wide-eyed. Your expression trembles, melts into a soft smile that feels like the closest thing to sedation Xiao can handle.
"So, so good," you assure him, and Xiao melts into your arms with a deep sigh. He's still shaking like a baby bird, but you hold him in your warm arms, as his tears turn to sniffles and then wet, quivering breaths. "You pushed yourself too far, though," you tell him, and Xiao curls up, blanching at any semblance of rejection. "I'm not mad," you hasten to assure him. "Far, far from it. Just... go easier on yourself, next time, please. I care about you. I don't want you to hurt yourself for my sake."
Reality returns in doses. Some semblance of awareness trickles back to Xiao the longer you talk. "I understand," he whispers. "I liked it. It was—perhaps more i-intense than I anticipated, but I liked it. I liked... doing it for you." He blushes.
You press a soft kiss to his forehead. "You're so sweet, Xiao. We'll talk about it more tomorrow, okay?"
He nods tiredly. That sounds agreeable. Tomorrow exists in some far-off dreamland. For now, he can curl up to your side as you carefully manoeuvre the towels off the bed so you can sleep on clean, dry sheets. Xiao clings to you, snuffling into your side like you'll disappear if he lets you go, and you card your fingers through his sweat-damp hair.
It should be horribly embarrassing. But it isn't. It just isn't. Nothing is the way it should be, when it comes to you. Not pain, or pleasure, or any of the things he usually feels. He supposes it's a byproduct of never being loved.
But he loves you. And—
"I love you, Xiao," you murmur against his hair, and if he had any tears left he's sure they'd be welling up in his eyes. As it is, his fingers merely tighten their hold on your waist. "You said it earlier—I don't know if—well. I just wanted to say it. I love you, and you did so, so well for me. Now go to sleep."
Xiao thinks he'd die if you asked him to.
But you don't. You just ask him to sleep.
So he does.

The sound the emergency comm makes is referred to in official documentation as a chime. Rex would like to shove a chiming comm up the ass of whoever made that decision.
The comm's screeching jerks Rex awake, and he's half sitting up before he’s even aware of why or that he can’t actually sit up due to the body slumped across him. Cody wakes in the same second as Rex.
Cody snarls a foul curse that he only seems willing to use in the first five minutes of being awake and hauls himself up just enough to fumble in the direction of the self by the bunk.
“Yours or mine?” Rex asks.
“Yours,” Cody announces. His smug delight is somewhat undercut by the fact it’s delivered as more of a sleepy mumble . Rex’s comm hits his bare chest followed closely by Cody who attempts to nuzzle back into the warm spot he just left.
The comm’s pale glow is blinding in the dark. Rex squints into it, the words slowly settling from blur to proper letters. Rex is needed in a holocall. Promptly.
Rex closes his eyes and pretends they can stay closed. It’s an unforgivable hour in the morning, and he’s exhausted. The bunk is warm and Cody is sprawled on top of him, almost too hot where their bare skin has been pressed together for hours.
He breathes deep, Cody’s head rising on his chest.
“I have to go,” Rex says and opens his eyes. Cody makes a sound into Rex’s skin, which Rex chooses to interpret as sympathy.
There’s no reasoning with Cody at this hour so Rex doesn’t bother trying, extracting himself from under Cody who impressively manages to convey bloodthirsty fury despite his refusal to open his eyes or form any recognisable words.
“I love you too,” Rex mutters. He drags himself over Cody, managing with only minimal success to avoid kneeing him in the back; it would be easier if Cody was capable of being at all cooperative when freshly awake.
Rex dresses in the dark, pulling on blacks and then his armour. Cody grumbles at the sound, expanding out to take over the slither of the bed he’d graciously allowed Rex to have all to himself.
“You get to go back to sleep,” Rex hisses. “Stop complaining.”
Cody grabs Rex’s tragically abandoned pillow, shoving it over his head. He rolls onto his side, putting his back to Rex. If life was at all fair, Rex would be able to climb back in next to him.
Hopefully this call won’t mean the 501st and 212th are separating again so soon.
“If I’m still here by—” Rex stops. There’s no point. Now Cody knows he’s not getting up, he’ll be most of the way back to sleep. He won’t remember anything Rex tells him.
Rex finishes strapping on his pauldron, fingers finding the buckles through practised memory even in the dark. It only leaves one remaining order of business.
Rex lifts the pillow off Cody's head. Cody’s eyes scrunch up tighter and he twists, mashing his face into the other pillow. Rex would laugh if it wouldn’t get him kicked, if not now, later. That Cody would remember. He kisses Cody’s temple and is rewarded with another sleepy noise of complaint.
“I hope yours goes off too,” Rex says.
Cody puts every second of his intense training to use. Fast as a Kodashi viper he snatches his pillow back from Rex’s hands. The way he slams it back over his head can only be described as violent.
Rex rolls his eyes and finally leaves Cody to sleep in peace.
Hopefully he’ll be back soon enough.

Nioqimo: A World Map
[fucking finally]
Please click this image is MASSIVE and tumblr is gonna chew it up completely
Tumblr media
But anyway! This is the map of planet Nioqimo. For those unaware, Nioqimo is a somewhat hard-scifi worldbuilding project of mine focusing on hexapodal aliens called the Nioqim [somewhat outdated designs]. You may have occasionally seen bits of Nioqimo worldbuilding around here! Feel free to look at my old stuff through #nioqimo!
This map took like. Two years to make. Mostly because no matter how many times I watched Artefexian's video on climate zones I could not grasp climatology. In the end I tried to approximate using his video as well as this color key below:
Tumblr media
The climate map itself is somewhat self-explanatory [disclaimer sea ice will change with the season yadda yadda yadda].
My next goal is to get all the planetary science done, but all there is to know is that Nioqimo is the first planet in a binary star system, though from its position the twin stars are close enough to be perceived as a single sun. You can also see the planet's axial tilt in the maps--approximately 38 degrees!

[here is my year old sketch of Nioqimo's solar system, featuring the twin stars, habitable zone, and some approximate measurements in astronomical units]
Ill get to that eventually!
Next we have the map of Nioqim polities:
Tumblr media
Is there a story? Maybe. Not necessarily. I'm not planning on delving too much into every single country's culture, though there will be references and all. I'd like to see what people may come up with between this and the climate map!
The naming of these countries was surely something. Because Im lazy and dont wanna make a million conlangs at once, I cheated and scoured databases of reconstructed proto-languages from our own history, and mish-mashed some basic elements to match toponym conventions. See if anything sounds familiar!

The Millennium Bug (2013) is, for me, a brand new entry on my short list of "please stop telling people to watch Cabin In The Woods" movies. I have a long standing grudge over the degree to which CITW is lionized as a great tribute to horror, despite largely showing little to no understanding of the genre in general, nor much in the way of respect to its audience.
So you can imagine how amused I was when Millennium Bug kicked off by immediately front-loading multiple unique horror subgenres into the opening act. While CITW attempts to throw every single subgenre into the blender of the slasher/cabin tropes, giving itself the usual Whedon smug pat on its own back, Millenium Bug wears its clear subgenre stereotypes on its sleeves. Which is both for better and for worse.
As a gruesome slasher / monster mash-up flick, it suffers from many of the major flaws you might expect - particularly because it draws on the redneck murder clan for one of its subgenre story elements. It is a movie where the subtext goes unexamined, and you'll know immediately whether or not you need to tap out within the first ten to twenty minutes. But if you're willing to leave the social elements less examined, what remains is a movie that's having an absolutely incredible and delightfully practical effect fueled time playing around in all the silliness to be mined from its three core concepts.
To return to the comparison, CITW relies heavily on metatextual genre awareness of the audience and the characters. However, in attempting to be ironically detached from the genre cliches, it betrays its own lack of understanding of the material. It's a movie that's 80% less clever than it constantly tries to remind the audience that it thinks it is. In contrast, Millenium Bug has what feels like virtually zero metatextual genre awareness to the characters, and no ironic detachment whatsoever. It does expect an audience to know what's up with the redneck murder clan, monster movie, slasher, and holiday themed subgenres - not to mention doing a nice job at hearkening back to older models of horror as you might get pre-millenial. You will find lots of gore, giant rubber and latex monsters, people acting in the most absurd ways and all of it delightfully cradling you in the comfort of a film that doesn't talk down to you, or expect you, as the audience, to be above it all.
It's hard to call it great or even good, I can't do any of that in good conscience. This is not one of those movies where I want everyone to see it, which I think will be fun and exciting for the casual horror movie viewer, or anyone who is looking to get into horror but doesn't want to get hit with a bunch of triggers and the like. I love recommending all those types of films, but this ain't it. The Millennium Bug is for the deep in the much horror movie fan, it's The Ritual by way of Frank Henenlotter - and if you got that reference you probably wanna see it regardless. It's garbage, but it's our garbage.

One more thing:
People keep saying that the live action has the same runtime (or similar runtime) as the animated series, but that is ignoring the way episode structure works in TV. It's not runtime, in TV.
Before we continue, my credentials are that I have an MFA in writing for film & television and I am a commissioned writer who has written TV episodes.
ATLA had 20 completed 30-minute episodes in season 1 (I know they were more like 20 minute, but in TV writing, people refer to series as 30 minute and 1 hour. A 30-minute usually has a 20-30 minute runtime, and a 1-hour usually has a 45-60 minute runtime. Sometimes, this is referred to as comedy [30] and drama[60], but that's falling out of style now that those runtimes are not as limited to those genres anymore).
Putting 2 full 30 minutes together doesn't make a properly structured 1-hour. 1-hour episodes have a completely different structure and still have to tell a full arc in their allotted time. 8 1-hour episodes is still 8 episodes, not a mashup of 20. That would be terrible TV structure, and trust me, it would've been a worse experience for the viewer.
You don't just... mash together all 20 episodes. You HAVE to mine the episodes for the most important story elements and use them to BUILD your story. If it was 20 1-hour episodes, there would be room to expand each of the original episodes. There just isn't in an 8 episode story. I don't know if what I'm saying will make sense to people who haven't written adaptations, but I can tell you that it makes no sense to think 8 1-hour episodes is the same amount of story space as 20 30-minute episodes. Each 1-hour episode has to tell a cohesive EPISODE of the story. It has to have a beginning, middle, and end. What's more likely to happen is what did happen, which is exploring moments that weren't in the og series and combining things from the og, while just keeping the plot of the original mostly intact. Honestly, the series had way more nods to the animated series than I expected.
Honestly, I wish they had 12 episodes instead of 8, because they could've let things marinate more... but yeah, I just need it to be understood that while the runtimes are similar, they're not actually equivalent.
(And y'all, I'm just rambling while I'm taking a break from writing a different project, which is driving me nuts, so if I sound ineloquent, my bad. I will clarify how the two are different in another post, if y'all want.)

GhostABO pt3
The shuffle of the medics around me lulls me into a tired dissociation. It doesn’t require me to answer any more questions, allows me to just breathe for a moment that I’ve left that cold room behind. It takes me even longer to believe that I’m not going back there. A belief with no promise, but a belief nonetheless.
There a sudden stop in conversation around me between the two and I look up for the disruption, noticing a new shadow in the room. His weight shifting nervously, awkward, as he holds two to-go plates of food in his hands. The alpha named Ghost. The beta nurse named Jacob doesn’t miss a beat, “I’m glad you’ve found us, Lieutenant. We just finished up here and V was just about to get some rest.”
Ghost steps forward, into the room, his eyes finding his way back to me as he situates the plate of food at my bedside table. The situation seems to parallel itself from earlier, the doctor falling into the background as Jacob maneuvers a mine field of its own. Ghost grunts something to him, his voice a reflection of the man himself, he turns his attention to me, his hands idly clenching in a bundle of nerves. “I wasn’t sure what you liked.” He refers to the plate he’s delivered and it’s a normal plate of chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy. Smells decent enough, but it’s nothing fancy, the closest thing to a meal I’ve seen in weeks. “You should eat.” He orders.
I’m too tired to fight him, telling me what to do. My stomach clenching with hunger and famine. I situate the plate in front of me, turning my attention to stabbing at the chicken as I begin to eat. The simplicity of food made with care and attention instead of leftovers and scraps.
Lieutenant Major Mercy turns to Ghost and summaries my initial exam quick and efficiently. “She should get some rest, Lieutenant. You can come back after she’s eaten and well rested.” Ghost knows he’s being asked to leave her, and a rumble begins in his chest at the thought of leaving, but he thinks again and knows she’s right.
He gives in, but he lingers. Trying to find a reason, any reason, to stay for a moment longer. When he’s unable to come up with anything, he relents, “Of course,” he begins to blend back into the background. There are no words as the other alpha begins to gently lead him out to the hallway. He doesn’t know what to say to her. So he says nothing at all.
The medic closes the door behind her, leaving V alone. Leaving her alone to rest. A thought he tries to keep in mind.
Mercy prompts Ghost, not letting the boogieman dictate the interaction, “Should I be contacting Captain Price or you about our guest.” Mine. The thought comes loud and suddenly, surprising even if the sentiment feels right.
“Directly to me.” The medic nods, taking the clipboard with the omega’s information and walking down the hall to leave Simon by himself in the hallway, the occasional person or couple moving passed him, careful to avoid his space, but looking,-watching the grim reaper out of his natural habitat. Never down here anymore than necessary. He can’t find it in him to move. So he lingers. Lingers outside her door, not wanting to go too far in case she needs something. In case she calls for him.
And something about that thought makes him perch outside her door. He finds a comfort knowing that she is eating. Finally acknowledging his own hunger and the plate of food in front of him. He eats by himself in the hallway outside the omega’s door, but there’s a whisper for a thought that finds a familiarity by eating with her. A connection Simon isn’t ready to dive deep into yet, with the want that lays under his skin. He eats in silence.

I designed a pin for the Books Unbound podcast last year and just got mine in the post!
The term Mashed Potato Book on the podcast refers to a book you think you’ll love so much that you haven’t read it yet and are saving it. I guess mine i the last Alice Munro book that I haven’t read. It’s a very cute bookish podcast.

Todays rip: 25/02/2023
BELIEBERDANSEN
Season 8 No Album Release (Read More) Caramelldansen (CA Version) - Caramellagirls
Ripped by DiamondBrickZ
youtube
With Season 8 officially in gear, it means I'm going to have to play a bit of catch-up with it in terms of coverage on here! All other prior Seasons have over 30 posts each on here - you can check for yourself on the pinned post! - but Season 8 still sits at just a single one, with Joke-Explainer™ 7000 Fusion Collab. Well, today marks the second ever Season 8 post, covering its first surprise event - BELIEBERDANSEN and the Justin Bieber takeover.
The idea of cringe culture in how it relates to SiIvaGunner's history is a really fascinating topic, and one I covered back on mlp racism anthem (comix zone arrange) in pretty good detail. To summarize, there was a time early in the channel's life where a good number of the references and jokes were made in rather poor taste - where the crux of the joke was to point and laugh at the weird and different parts of the internet, to have trolled the audience with something "cringe". The feel of internet discussion has changed a lot in the years since 2016, though, and it generally feels as if we're far more accepting, more nostalgic and intrigued by the stranger parts of the internet, rather than blatantly antagonistic. Be it with "dead" memes like in Corridors of Vine and Wario's Hampster Mine, or with phenomena that are still ongoing like with Hidden Headtoilets (skibidi toree 2), the SiIvaGunner channel and community tend to take a far more...playful stance to things nowadays. If something is to be loathed in SiIvaGunner nowadays, it has to truly earn it through its presence on the channel: the Yankin'/Astronaut in the Ocean wars of Season 5, as talked about in Aquarium in the Ocean and Knowledge of the Depths are the clearest example of that.
With all of that in mind, I don't really know why I was still surprised over how much fun the Justin Bieber event wound up being! The event, on February 19, 2024, celebrated the 14th anniversary of Justin Bieber's infamous release "Baby", a song that lit early internet ablaze with exaggerated vitriol way back when. And yeah, a bit of that resentment could still be seen in the comments section - its a fair bit more justified given how much Bieber himself has changed since the song - but overall, the rips made during the event all put a really fun spin on this otherwise overplayed song! I recommend you all give the event a listen if you haven't been keeping tabs this month, but BELIEBERDANSEN is really just one pick amidst a plethora of other excellent ones. That, and as said in Caramariodansen - any song mashed up with Caramelldansen is bound to become funny.
Honestly though, it wasn't a blind pick, and I may just be a little bit biased toward the aforementioned song in particular. Caramelldansen, if you weren't aware, is a Nightcore-ified version/remix of a Swedish pop song - and I, Mel, the writer of this blog, am Swedish. That draws me to any Caramelldansen rip on its own, and the concept of BELIEBERDANSEN alone is just very funny, a mashup of two absolute juggernauts of early "obnoxious" internet culture. Yet ripper DiamondBrickZ went the extra mile beyond just making this a mashup - at the point where the choruses of both songs begin, Bieber's Baby vocals are sentence-mixed to the original Swedish vocals of Caramelldansen. I of course have no idea what the creative process behind this was, especially due to the not knowing much about DiamondBrickZ as a person, but as a Swedish listener myself I have to say: This is SHOCKINGLY well done and still sounds wholly legible as Swedish speech. Like, the rest of the mashup is great: I love the use of the repeated "Baby's" almost acting as a choir during the instrumental break after the chorus, and the use of Ludacris' feature during the midway point of the song is perfectly placed, but like...the sentence mixing genuinely caught me completely off guard in the best way possible - memories of Season 1's double-rugpull in Be Cool, Be Wild, and Be My Girl came flowing back. It's just the cherry on top of an already fantastically creative mashup idea that was excellently done, and turned BELIEBERDANSEN into the absolute highlight of the event for me.

YO! First: I love your inks. Second: any tips for drawing maps? I've attempted to draw the map of my fantasy world so many times but can't seem to get a result I'm happy with? And I just saw the super cool map you've done and need to ask if you have any references or tips to share. Thanks in advance!
Hi! Thank you thank you!!
I'm not that experienced with drawing maps but I'll share what I thought about while drawing the "Eastern Brukiers" map.
First I established the points I needed for the story - so Spring Hill, the forest in the middle and the city Graben
Then I tried to not look at it as a map, but more like a composition - where would it look good visually if there was something there and where would it be nice to have empty space? This became scribbles which later became forests and mountains
Following that I tried to make the world believable - a river would flow from the mountains then split here and there. Villages would appear near the main city and along the roads to it. I added some farms and a mine too
After this the sketch was ready, now I had to decide how to draw it. Should a forest be made of individual trees or as a single unit? How should I draw the shoreline and water? How should I draw the river? I searched for fantasy/medieval maps online and got some ideas which I mashed together with how I'd like to draw it
I experimented a bit with the river and buildings. It's not visible but a large part of the river has been fixed with correction fluid and redrawn because I didn't like how it turned out..
Lastly I added some tone and text - I made sure that the water, forest/grassland and houses were all different tones to make them easy to differentiate
A big tip is to work slow! A map is best done very slowly and methodically. I lit some candles and drank tea for ideal coziness while making this haha
Hope that helps!

Luxiem & A Trace Of Wonder
WARNING: Please remember that I am writing about Luxiem based on their characters online and not of the people behind their vtuber avatars, thank you!
EXTRA NOTES: wuwuywuwywuw did i finally start writing again??? yes . do i have a new fixation on a bl novel???also yes so now im mashing these two interests of mine together... just like how i started this blog
Tumblr media
GENERAL
a luxiem au based on 해의 흔적 (a trace of wonder)
for the sake of this au, they are from the same jp guild - Luxiem (the guild from the original is an sk guild, so since anycolor is jp, luxiem will fall under jp.... plus en is a very broad area... bear with me LMAO)
Luxiem are considered the top JP Guild and one of the top guilds worldwide
the source material IS from a BL novel, but there will be no mentions of romance for this post
i went a little chuuni to name the abilities ok i dont think the novel had that - im just cringe like that
dear god i did not proofread this but something definitely possessed me in order to write this out instead of whatever college essay i got due soon
BRIEF ATOW UNIVERSE EXPLANATION
ok so think of it as like a modern era rpg game - the awakened class of people refers to those with supernatural abilities and dungeons are areas in the world where treasure and strong monsters spawn (sometimes these dungeons are based on parts of history as well)
the awakened class makes up about 10% of the population
those who are awakened have access to these dungeons in order to beat them within a certain time frame with Class S dungeons being the most deadly
those who are awakened also form guilds in order to enter such dungeons and have jurisdiction over ones that spawned with the guild's country - no other country is allowed to interfere with another
those who are awakened have two abilities - one main and one hidden ; the hidden ability also comes with a penalty and should be used with caution as the power may interfere with every day life outside of combat/cause hindrance when dungeon crawling
for the powerscalling in the universe, it is from Class E (lowest) to Class S (highest) ; this works for both the classification of awakened people and dungeon ranking
the main abilities that are at least mentioned here are restorers, hunters, mages and healers ; 2/4 classes are combative while the others are non-combative, but still useful when dungeon crawling
i hope my shitty explanation gets you to read the novel/manwha so that you can understand it better LMAO
MORE UNDER THE CUT
❀•°•═════ஓ๑♡๑ஓ═════•°•❀
Tumblr media
IKE EVELAND
CLASSIFICATION: Class A Healer
MAIN ABILITY: Priest's Waterfall
ike has the ability to heal using his staff without using too much mana. however, he is restricted to water - by using other elements, he runs the risk of depleting too much mana before entering the boss' room in a dungeon.
his staff has the appearance of a large quill. no one knows the reasoning behind it as most staffs on the guild markets are stick-like
HIDDEN ABILITY: Darkness of the Deep
ike has the hidden ability to summon a powerful tentacle-like creature of nightmares. with this, ike switches classes - from non-combative to combative. however, the tentacle-like creature is sentient and moves on its own, ike has no control over what it hits. the creature is also considered to be a glass canon ; while it is powerful, it can only withstand attacks for so long and is on a time limit.
ike can only use his hidden ability when threatened ; he and mysta are the only non-combative members of the guild and this is his only way of protecting them both if no one else could not help.
PENALTY: everything he touches becomes an inky water
without mysta around, most solid objects around ike become an inky liquid that is as viscous as water if he touches it - it's strange, but definitely an inconvenience to his everyday life.
fortunately, his penalty does not harm humans
his strength lies in his durability and mana. he is also quite knowledgable of different types of potions and strengthening spells that help out with dungeon crawling
in fact, ike naturally houses the most mana within the guild followed by shu, mysta, vox and luca.
he originally came from a swedish guild overseas before his meeting with vox, who recruited ike with the promise of hatsune miku figures if he joined Luxiem (this is my attempt at humor)
ike is usually the one who gathers intel on their next dungeon - thanks to his quick reading speed and familiarity with mythos, ike predicts what would the location and boss of the dungeon with 99.99% accuracy
Tumblr media
LUCA KANESHIRO
CLASSIFICATION: Class A Hunter
MAIN ABILITY: Heightened Strength
despite not wielding any kind of weapon, luca is proud of his brute strength - just one tap from him could reduce skyscrapers into dust clouds.
HIDDEN ABILITY: Shapeshifting
luca's hidden ability can only be activated if he has ingested a specific kind of gemstone - however with his hidden ability, he can only turn into a lion that possesses supernatural qualities for a short period of time
the lion is big btw ... just letting you know haha
PENALTY: Lion's Mane
with the penalty in place, luca essentially walks around with a huge lion's mane. he complains about how heavy it is and how the hair gets everywhere
unlike the other members, luca does not possess any magical strength - arguably he could just be a regular civilian who happens to possess superhuman strength; most of luxiem thought he was a civilian until they found out about his penalty
he also is proficient with long range weapons such as guns and arrows, but he is mainly the brawler of the group
while luca was originally scouted by vox to join, luca is actually the one who has the leadership role - the demon said that he prefers a more 'in the shadows' kind of role anyways and handed the position to luca; the guild members aren't sure if luca is actually aware of that, but they all appreciate the work and effort he gives towards the guild.
the guild luca was in has a partnership with luxiem and is currently being led by his older brother
Tumblr media
MYSTA RIAS
CLASSIFICATION: Class A(?) Restorer
MAIN ABILITY: Restoration
after seeing a structure, mysta has the ability to 'restore' it to it's original state - for instance, if ike had turned a wardrobe into ink, mysta has the ability to restore the wardrobe's appearance and functionality before it was turned into ink.
mysta's true abilities is unknown - if anything, he has enough magical strength to bring life back
however, there are some ethical issues involving the restoration of life and is considered taboo for a restorer to interfere with the death of a living thing.
generally, mysta has the strength to restore even stadiums after an earthquake to its original form and functionality - it is possible that he may be a Class S, but no further assessment has been made yet
HIDDEN ABILITY: Medusa's Petrification.
this is the only ability mysta has that is allowed to be used on living creatures - he essentially turns things into stone rather than restoring them to its original state
the only way this ability is activated is when mysta experiences a very strong emotion such as fear or despair
he only has to look at the object or creature in front of him in order for it to turn into stone - fortunately, even with the hidden ability activated, he could still undo the process if he accidentally petrifies a guild member
PENALTY: Floating
for some odd reason, mysta's penalty is that he has no control over gravity - his body becomes weightless and therefore starts to float. he essentially becomes a balloon and many of the guild members just walk him around with a string attached to his belt so he doesn't fly off to who knows where before his penalty wanes off.
mysta was actually not part of a guild when he was scouted - in fact, he was working as an odd-jobs repair man who did small gigs in order to get by.
mysta also has the least amount of dungeon experience as he is of a non-combative class ; surprisingly enough, not many guilds seek restorers to join.
despite that, mysta is a highly sought out restorer due to his efficiency - buildings turned into rubble could be restored within a matter of seconds
he is also the only one in the guild who is responsible for the loot they earned and items each member brings into the dungeons
Tumblr media
SHU YAMINO
CLASSIFICATION: Class S Mage
MAIN ABILITY: Summoner
as his main ability states, shu is a summoner who could gather up to Class A monsters to listen to him.
he also has the ability to call upon 'yokai'-classed monsters through the usage of shikigami ; this aspect of his ability is dependent on the amount of shikigamis he brings with him into dungeons.
HIDDEN ABILITY: God's Messenger
when activated, shu has the ability to call down one of japan's seven lucky gods to battle. this is randomized and he doesn't have the ability to choose which one will come help.
luckily for him, he doesn't have to worry about the gods not responding to him; no matter the call, they will answer.
depending on who is summoned, shu takes on the form of one of the seven lucky gods and uses their abilities in combat.
essentially, shu becomes possessed by the god he has summoned but does run the risk of being permanently possessed by them even though his combat ability is on a timer
the only problem with this ability is that this can only be activated if he senses that the danger is too high ; ideally in Class S dungeons where the survival rate is essentially 0%.
PENALTY: Inability to feel pain
this penalty could be proven fatal to shu as he would be numb to all kinds of pain - from the tiniest scratch to getting his heart ripped out ; it would be too late for shu to notice if anything bad happens to him.
this penalty is activated the minute he uses his hidden ability, thus putting his own life at an even higher risk of possession and even death
similarly to mysta, shu was not a part of a guild when he was scouted, in fact, he had been staying at his family's temple as one of the priests who carried out sacred rituals to protect his town from dungeons spawning nearby.
tragically, shu is one of the few guild members to experience loss through the dungeons.
when vox found him, he was surround by the rubble of what was originally his home town - the Class A dungeon wiped the town off the map. with no where else to go, shu decided to follow vox and the rest of luxiem.
shu often helps ike with intelligence and is often in charge of dungeons that originate in japanese mythos
he was the last member to be recruited - words of a powerful sorcerer had reached vox's ears, but he didn't expect to find him in that state.
despite the tragedy, shu is thankful for having met the boys of luxiem - he's glad to call them home
Tumblr media
VOX AKUMA
CLASSIFICATION: Class S Hunter
MAIN ABILITY: Shadow Swordsman
vox is quite proficient with the sword, combined with the demon-like energy that festers within the shadows, he becomes an unstoppable killing machine
not only can he infuse the dark energy into whatever blade he is holding, he also has the ability to create a clone who wields the sword the same way he does
HIDDEN ABILITY: Divine Judgement
he has the ability to strike a mighty light into his opponents - it is a devastating ability that clashes with his already dark main ability
it can strike through the thickest material and destroy what is wicked ; often destroying the dungeon completely and automatically clearing it in order to avoid any more casualties.
it is another ability that can only be activated during dire situations, similarly to shu's hidden ability.
PENALTY: Temporary Blindness
as the light he summons is from the almighty, it does temporarily blind vox for a little while as punishment for using god's ability for his quest to find out what causes dungeons to spawn
the first and last time vox had his penalty in place, shu was the one who helps guide him around with the usage of his shikigami - on the other hand, luca was the one to pull pranks on vox while he's blind (vox can tell it's luca because of his laugh)
vox has the most dungeon crawling experience out of all the members of luxiem and is the one who recruited all of them to join his guild - he's happy to find such like minded people he could call home.
while his physical or magical strength doesn't exceed all members of luxiem, he is the most proficient and stable in terms of combat ; he has used his hidden ability only once in his entire career as a hunter
luxiem's leader in the shadows, while he doesn't take a direct leadership role, vox usually is the one who approves of or disapproves of luca's wild antics.
ok a lot of the times, vox does approve of luca's antics because "he's just being silly your honour" - only when the situation is that dire will he take matters into his own hands.
he's usually the one calling strategy meetings before going into dungeons

Differently Connected
Who would've believed you'd be having this life all for yourself? The ambience of nature outside the kitchen. Sun shining through the tied curtains. Your attention shifts back to your toddler on his high chair, playing with the mashed food across his table. Your little bundle of joy in his adorable blue onesie and bib, squealed as you strut over to him with a playful pout. “—baby, you're lucky I haven't changed you out of pajamas."
You thinked for a moment. You certainly did say something before referring to the baby. You could only mentally shrug.
Your pout turns to a lopsided grin as he babbles like you'd understand him. Lifting him up, you nodded along, “Oh really?" while wiping his face and hands with his bib. With your back turned towards the entryway, someone walked in.
“Mornin’ babe,” You yelped as someone wraps his arms around your waist and kiss your nape with a groan. You lightly tap his arm within your reach. "Quit startling me.”
…Your husband? He seems to be. In his robe, could only chuckled before squeezing your ass which annoys you even more. His green eyes look at the toddler. "How's my boy been, huh?” He reached one of his rough hands to ruffle his baby's head softly, earning a babble.
You smiled at his display of affection towards his son, happy that six years later it turned into this. Throughout your ups and downs, who knew he'd come around and settled with you at the end of ‘81… is that right?
...
You tiredly blink back to reality, looking around before settling back on your seat with closed eyes. ‘That dream again…’ You thought, tired of it repeating over and over again for almost forever..
It was always those two blurry father and son stuck in that membrane of yours. Fuck, now you need to released that steam off before you fried that cardboard cutout and potentially burn the abandoned pizzaria. Screw Earving, he still hasn't shown up for our once a decade meet up.

i really enjoyed your post on sidney freedman!!!! i'm wondering, what do you think of radar, as a character or as a storytelling device or both? imagine my little anon sunglasses face resting on my hands smiling so smittenly and kicking my feet. i adore your thoughts theyre SO fun and interesting to read
hi! thank you for your kind words.
In Dear Sigmund good ol’ Sidney tells us rather than shows us the Radar character thesis:
Actually Sigmund, it’s a wonder more people around here don’t take a vacation from reality. Some people even manage to grow - Radar for instance. In so many ways he’s still as innocent and naïve as the local orphans he plays with. And yet this boy keeps this unit, this state of chaos running smoothly.
The early years establish that pretty well without actually saying it outright. I do find Radar very enjoyable during that period, but he had to be completely re-tooled alongside the rest of the show as of Season 4. The reason for that is Radar and Henry were a package deal, maybe even in a more effective way than Trapper and Hawkeye because the former pair gives you some contrast. The gag with Radar-Henry was that Henry was this privileged, middle-aged dude, a surgeon, and the CO at the 4077th, but he’d run the camp into the ground were it not for Radar, an almost-legal child. The point of that seems very clear to me, this lower-class kid from rural Iowa with nothing but street smarts going for him is far more competent than anyone else in the camp. I love that. Without Radar, Trapper and Hawkeye can’t pull off a lot of their hijinks. Henry can be something of a wild card, in theory he’s on HawkTrap’s side, definitely more than I can say Potter was ever on HawkBeej’s side, but the thing with Henry is he likes to be liked by others, including by the army brass, whereas HawkTrap and Radar don’t give a shit about that.
That early version of Radar takes a huge hit when Potter rolls in, and we see Radar’s subversive role diminished significantly. Actually if I were a Radar stan I’d be pretty pissed off about that, but usually my annoyance is reserved for the Potter-Klinger relationship. As a class-dynamics stan, I am heartbroken. Think about what we got instead in the mid-late years when it came to class… Rizzo whose class is the butt of the joke 90% of the time, Klinger who gets really into moneymaking schemes for some reason (think about why the only brown character on the show got that as a character beat) and uh… tha’s it. The next person on the ladder might be Hawkeye. Radar is still around until season 8 but they lean really hard into his being “simple” and infantilizing him and he’s no longer this scrappy, street-wise kid, who Charles frequently refers to as a “bumpkin”. I get why Gary Burghoff might’ve started to tire of playing that, he was nearing 40 by the time he left MASH. The early years allowed his character to be much more complicated in my opinion, and tbh, he was funny as fuck back then.
Radar does get some solid content in 4 - 8. Burghoff is a great actor and he convincingly sells the more dramatic moments like in The Interview, Bug Out, Dear Sigmund, End Run, and Mail Call… Again. I don’t care for the framing of Fallen Idol but I think Burghoff and Alda have good chemistry and it was fun to see some conflict in their relationship. My problem with Radar-centric episodes in that era is they rely on “... and now Radar is all grown up!” as the moral of the story, but that only lasts until the next Radar episode rolls around and he’s a little kid again. I prefer episodes where we get to see him have fun. Your Hit Parade has always been a favourite of mine, I love Radio-DJ Radar.
Unfortunately I think the moment Radar is truly seen as “grown up” on the show is Goodbye Radar parts 1 and 2, which is embarrassingly late imo. We see that he’s now grown up in a few ways: his role as the backbone of the 4077th has a noticeably different tone – people outwardly express their reliance on him, and Radar himself “takes on” the burden of running the unit rather than it magically falling to him, and he argues with Hawkeye on his level about staying. Before all that stuff about Radar was unsaid, and the one time Sidney does say it its preceded by “this 19-year-old is as childlike as the 4-to-5-year-old local Korean kids”. In Goodbye Radar it’s called out multiple times in the open. The other way we see that Radar has “come of age” is he takes more of an assertive role during his encounter with his love interest, Patty. We see him actually go for what he wants, trying to delay his flight, making the first move to kiss her and being noticeably disgruntled at having to leave her behind. I suppose it happens so late because they couldn’t manage him past that point, which is why he continues to be stagnant until that point.
When he does finally “come of age” it doesn’t land well for me because it’s so sudden. This is the same Radar who 10 episodes ago sought advice from the whole camp on how to talk to a pretty nurse in Hot Lips is Back in Town. I think that was the third or fourth time we saw that plot. I love a coming-of-age story but they need to be gradual for them to be effective, and that’s not easy to do on a episodic show. Really with the exception of Margaret and maybe Charles, I don’t know that any of the characters on MASH have a concrete character arc. I’ve gone back and forth with BJ - I like to see an arc there, but I have no clue how intentional it was. And with Margaret and Charles it might be a bit easier because they start out as antagonists.
To be clear though, I don’t think “character development” is a surefire sign of a good character or a good show. I think Hawkeye is a fantastic character and he doesn’t develop much. But when the show made the shift to character drama, certain characters suffered a lot. Radar was one of them, Frank was another which is why Linville’s exit makes so much sense to me and he literally said of Frank, “there’s no where else for this character to go”. So that’s it really – I think Radar was a character who couldn’t quite land the leap to the show’s new format, but who was a fan favourite. He shows up less and less throughout season 7 and the excuse we’re given is that he’s “off on R&R”, so you almost get used to him not being there.
To properly answer your actual question: I think he really worked well as a device in the early years. He buttresses the messaging of the show, he’s on the side of the “anti-regular-army” and – something that I think gets overlooked a lot – he’s fucking horny lmao. He may be virginal but he leers at women, he wants to have sex and go on dates with them, he can be devious and he’s not always automatically on Hawkeye’s side, sometimes he wants something in exchange for his help. It was a very fun vibe. So it was weird for me to see him go from that to this delicate little cherub who is only looking for a pure, lasting love – that was what his character was based around in the character drama years and I don’t care for it. Let Radar fuck tbh. He isn’t 10 years old, he’s 18-19-20.
There is also this thing I wrote about him that got way more traction than I could’ve imagined. It started out as a meta post but I kinda hit flow with it and just started writing… it’s half-way between meta and prose and it generally sums up my feelings about Radar in a less analytical way that I’ve done here.
Thank you so much for the interesting ask!
