Yeah, no, they are. They're attached to their capes rather than being directly tied around their necks, so pulling on it wouldn't necessarily choke them, but could definitely yank them off their feet... So it's not really the most ideal design for battle...

But they look soooooo pretty. The ribbons twirling around with them lends very well to their fighting style and the way they tend to move. And it's a very iconic look, and easily marketable... Sooooo... it got put on the outfits anyway. It just means that the Gemini have gotten very good at moving in such a way that the ribbons tend to stay close to their bodies and out of their opponent's reach, and have learned how to counteract if they do get grabbed. Just another challenge for them.

This might seem like an "old man yells at cloud" situation, but it's just wild growing up and being told how dangerous distracted driving is - how, at highway speeds, you can traverse the length of a football field (100 yards, 91 meters) in a matter of seconds - how one split second sending a text while driving could result in a potential fatal crash, and then getting on the road as a driver and being surrounded by billboards. Their entire purpose is to catch one's attention, so they're lining major roads, which tend to be highways. How is it that you're told how important it is to never be distracted while driving, but still being advertised to?

At best, this type of advertising is an eyesore to pedestrians and motorists and a general waste of electricity to light it, and at worst, it is an active danger considering they are there to advertise and therefore, must catch people's attention.

I'm not even against advertising in theory, but this particular mode bothers me so much and I hate how pervasive it is - especially in large cities or highways.

Separate post to avoid playing into the outrage marketing campaign of the day that inspired these thoughts now, because I do want to talk a little more about outrage marketing in general - namely, two particularly insidious things about it.

One: It plays on one of THE most common cognitive distortions, ESPECIALLY in very individualistic cultures: it relies on you thinking that if YOU don't complain about how awful the thing is, then that's BASICALLY the same thing as letting it just get shilled completely unopposed.

Two: You can't actually call out any given case without playing into it at least a little. It's literally impossible to do. In order to call any specific example for what it is, you have to identify it...and even that helps it in the mighty algorithm. You QRT'ed that thread of people getting mad at obvious bait to call it for what it was? All Shitter cares about is that you shared it. That's a boost. It's not as critical on tumblr, because fewer people use the algorithmic features, but the impact still exists - reblogging the bait to add youreallsofuckingstupid.jpg or childrenthisisbait.png or thatsbait.gif is still reblogging the bait.

What I'm saying is, when a Bad Product is trending, then before you add your voice to the chorus, ask yourself:

"Is my perspective ACTUALLY new within my circle? Has anyone else been saying what I'm saying, who might reach the same people I could?"

And if the answer is no/yes respectively, then the best thing to do is shut up.

It's impossible to describe the experience of watching Total Forgiveness to people, like how do I explain that this is one of the most compelling shows I've ever watched and it's even one of my comfort rewatch shows but also I cannot rewatch a good third of the series because it makes me so viscerally uncomfortable and this would absolutely never be greenlit by the Dropout of today but it's also essential viewing for understanding not only the development of the company but the public personas of many of the key people involved in Dropout. It's funny and then it's painfully dark and then at the last minute it's hopeful and heartwarming again but damn if it isn't raw all the way through. From the crushing pressure of living under late-stage capitalism to the severe toll on personal relationships that the very premise of the show enables. Also there's a jaunty little soundtrack. 11/10 will rewatch again and again. Except the MLM challenge. I am psychologically unable to watch that again for any sum of money on this planet.
