Saiyan Pride

I started off having a crack fic continuation from this situation, but I started bleep-booping on it this morning and it turned into some fluffiness featuring a transgender reader with three excitable alien roommates, and a "lost in translation" that actually hit me kinda deep when I got into it. So, uh...yeah. I was having some trans feelings today, here you go. 💖

They really wreaked some havoc when they landed. Or tried to, anyway. Goku and the boys took care of it, or that's what you heard (not from them, though; they tell it a little different). Either way, it's not that hard to believe, no matter which direction you squint at the story.

They're okay roommates, though.

Sure, they come and go at weird hours, and they can get pretty loud. And it's hard to explain the space ships, and the bunker add-ons, but after the first time Nappa grumbles, "Lemme handle this," nobody ever gets a parking ticket at the house again, and they always come through with rent, so you don't ask a whole lot of questions.

It's not clear what they do for a living. Their soft skills leave a lot to be desired. Vegeta can at least dress himself like a halfway normal person, but his skills are granite. Iron. Even Raditz has better customer service game.

But they treat you decently. And when you finally take the plunge, and change your hair, and put on the new outfit you bought, and grab a bag of your old stuff to take to the donation center, you pause for a second in the living room.

And sure enough, Raditz looks up with slight puzzlement and remarks, “Your hair’s different.”

And you shrink a little, and stand up straighter anyway, and explain that there are going to be some…changes. You do your best to explain it, in hopes that it will come out right, and it’s still a little awkward, but you explain to your roommates that you’re transitioning.

They all hop up from the couch immediately, and the atmosphere becomes raucous and excited.

“Whoa, you can DO THAT?!” Raditz squawks.

“Unbelievable!” Vegeta cries. “I didn’t even know you’d been training!”

“What are your new powers?” Nappa demands, and then whirls toward Raditz. “Get the scanner, I wanna see what level–”

You wave your hands and raise your voice and explain that GENDER, it’s a GENDER transition, TRANSGENDER!

They fall silent, eyes wide.

“Trans…?” Vegeta breathes. “TRANSFORM YOUR GENDER?! Not even Kakarot is that powerful!” He places a hand on your shoulder. “You must truly be an astonishing warrior.”

Raditz leans in with a friendly but feral grin and a jubilant, “You wanna spar?”

You back slowly toward the door with promises of pizza in hopes of distraction.

It works.

“Whoa, you look cool,” Raditz observes. “What’s the flag for?”

You inform your roommates that you’re meeting up with some friends to go to Pride, and find yourself immediately caged by a cluster of keen-eyed Saiyans.

“Wait, what?!” Vegeta inquires. “Where are you going?”

You stammer out an explanation about Pride. Pride Month. You add that there’s a parade.

They exchange glances at lightning speed, and round back to you again.

“THERE’S A WHOLE MONTH?!” Nappa hollers.

“IN WHO YOU ARE, AS YOURSELF?!” Vegeta confirms.

“There’s a parade…about PRIDE?!” Raditz yawps.

You nod, quaking.

Vegeta throws an arm around your shoulders, beaming with lunatic glee. “WAVE YOUR FLAG HIGH AND GET IN THE SHIP! EVERYONE! EVERYBODY GET IN THE SHIP, WE’RE GOING DOWN THERE, RIGHT NOW!”

They act exactly like aliens. Which…makes sense, really, but still.

Your friends are polite about holding in their laughter. But they also don’t know exactly how to deal with the situation. The Saiyans gawk unabashedly, but with the same bewildered and bewildering reverence they gave you.

One of your friends nudges you and motions to a space a few yards away, where Vegeta stands, craning his neck to ask a towering glamazon, "So, you're telling me they tried to crush your spirit, because of who you are, but you found your way in a hostile world and became both fierce and fabulous?” He rubs his chin and muses, “Your power levels must be off the charts..."

You trade a shrug with your friend because…well…he’s not wrong.

And you’re not really surprised when Nappa declares, with the carnival glee of a spirited child and the full-chested power of an enormous Saiyan warrior, “This…this is the BEST PLACE ON EARTH!” And, looking around at the crowd, the different flags, and the many different folks, the colors and shapes and all the visuals, the feathers and flair, and cargo shorts and clogs, and rainbows, and neon, and leather, and glitter, and tee shirts and jeans, and everything else, you kinda get what he means.

You can’t really explain why he’s right, but for some of the wrong reasons. But his heart’s in the right place, maybe? And you’re having a pretty good time.

You look up at a sharp knock on your bedroom door, and open it to find all three of your roommates crowded into the hallway, looking serious. Your stomach and heart take racing elevators in opposite directions.

“Hi,” Raditz says, with some measure of cheer.

You give them a cautious greeting.

“Seems like the transformation’s going well,” Nappa observes, encouragingly.

You pause for a moment, then just smile and offer some thanks. It’s a little complex. A little complicated. They still don’t get it. But they’re really supportive, and that’s nice.

Vegeta adopts a businesslike tone. Informs you, “We very much enjoyed attending the Pride festivities last year, and owe you a debt of gratitude for introducing us to the other warriors.”

You offer a hesitant nod.

He continues, “Some of the individuals at the collective have been training us to join the alliance.” Before you can sort out quite what he means, he motions to Nappa and Raditz. They shuffle around a bit while he explains, “You’ve clearly been training hard, but it’s important to be properly equipped, as well.”

He steps out of the way, giving Nappa room to step forward, and present one of those weird cases they ship stuff in. They maneuver it into your room, and watch while you open it.

“We know this isn’t your final form, but this should be able to handle it, whatever the transformation brings.” Vegeta explains, nodding toward the set of Saiyan battle armor. Just your size.

You nod toward it as well, stunned. And puzzled.

You look back up at your roommates, and find them watching you with a look you’ve never really seen from them before. It’s a bit like that weird, smirky expression they get when they cheat at board games, or catch each other cheating at board games. But the fierceness around the eyebrows is different. And the eyes have a kind of contentment that’s still pretty intense.

They just seem…proud.

So, inevitably, whatever else you may be feeling, you do put forth the critical question.

They nearly ricochet off the walls.

“Of course we’ll go with you!” Vegeta assures.

“ARE YOU GONNA BRING THE FLAG?!” Nappa booms.

Raditz sidles up to you and murmurs, “That’s technically battle armor, it’s not really, y’know, formal. LIke, parade-style. But I think you’d be okay.”

And so you prepare yourself to head to Pride with the Saiyans again.

This is something I've been asking myself, but can you tell me everything the brothers Carla and Shin did wrong throughout all the games in and out of their routes? I've been wondering about this recently, sorry if this is sudden to ask...

Hi anon, while I do know quite a lot of Carla and Shin's routes off the top of my head, I'm not quite as good with all of the other Dark Fate routes and there are still routes in CL I haven't played that I don't really want to spoil for myself if I can avoid it. In order to do what you're asking, I'd basically have to go through every single DF and CL route and double check their LE routes (which admittedly I know a little too well but I do generally like to double check things). To my memory Lunatic Parade doesn't contain them doing anything particularly bad aside from Shin picking on some of the guys but if you were to do a really thorough job it wouldn't hurt to check those too.

I'm afraid that is a monumental amount of work that I'm really not willing to commit to for the sake of a single ask, especially as what I qualify as bad enough to make the list might not necessarily be the same as you or someone else. If you genuinely want to know all of the things Carla and Shin have done, then honestly I would suggest you read their routes for yourself as all of the DF routes have been very kindly translated by @dialovers-translations (who has put an incredible amount of work into her blog over the years) and their LE routes have also been translated and you can find links to them on @vampirerosemary's incredibly useful masterlists.

Now if you're asking this because you're not particularly comfortable with dark content and want to know whether to avoid DF or not, I'm afraid I would honestly suggest just not engaging with any of the main games and instead focusing on the bonus drama CDs and Lunatic Parade which is much more fluffy. I know some will say you shouldn't ignore the darker aspects of the series but at the end of the day, it's just fiction and looking out for your own well-being matters more than berating yourself for not engaging with all of the content.

On the other hand, if you're asking this just to measure how "bad" Carla and Shin are compared to the other guys, I'll cut to the chase. Literally all of the diaboys are problematic in one way or another (and even Yui can be in some of the bad endings) so I honestly don't think trying to find a "least bad" is really all that meaningful, especially as you may consider certain actions to be far worse than someone else (for example I actually found Shuu's HDB route to be way more off-putting than Laito's, which as far as I can tell, is a very uncommon opinion).

I have said before that I think out of all of the boys, Azusa is the least malicious but even then he's hardly a saint.

However, I don't think there's any use in feeling guilty about fangirling over the diaboys even though they've all done bad things. I think if you're mature enough to properly engage with some of the themes that feature in DL, then you should be able to distinguish reality and fiction. As long as you understand that irl you should run for the hills from anyone who acts like the boys, there's nothing wrong with having fantasies with dark elements if that's what you enjoy.

Another thing I want to just say while I have the chance that I saw mentioned many years ago but seems to have been forgotten about is this idea of choice. So, in game, particularly the early games, Yui does not have a chance to consent to what the boys do to her, and if you look at it from that perspective, DL is pretty much entirely a horror story (it's one of the reasons why I don't particularly enjoy writing Yui x diaboy scenarios versus reader x diaboy material).

However, the thing you have to take into account is that you, either through listening to the CDs, or playing the games, or reading the translations are effectively giving your consent to keep the scenario going and see what happens. At any point, you have the ability to take out your headphones, or turn off your console or stop reading, make up some ending in your head and never think about the series again. At the end of the day, the person in charge isn't the boys, or Yui, or even Karl, it's you.

Now I know some people prefer to view the player as being completely passive (i.e. Yui is her own character and we're just helplessly watching her story), but the fact of the matter is that in the games, that straight up isn't true, our decisions control the ending. And like I said, if anything comes up that makes you uncomfortable, you can just stop playing, and I would recommend you do at that point, especially if you're not too clear on what your own limits are when it comes to consumption of dark material.

Anyway what I am trying to get at here? Basically, the reason why you can enjoy DL as a dark fantasy is because at any point, you can disengage from it. If you find yourself reading DL and just getting upset about bad things happening to Yui, it's not that those feelings aren't valid, but honestly you are far better off taking a step back, maybe writing her a happy ending yourself if you enjoy writing, and then leaving it be. Please do not read things that only upset you, life is too short to inflict misery on yourself.

Anyway I'm sorry this isn't what you asked for anon, but hopefully it has at least been some use to you.

Hello Haley, I am new to Diabolik Lovers. Is there anything I need to know about Diabolik Lovers?

Hi! I'm not the best at describing things, but I'll try my hardest!

Well, that depends on which media you are consuming. Whether it be the anime, games, drama cds ect.

Most people find the series through the anime, but the games are faaaaar more detailed and expansive of the series as a whole.

DL is basically about a young woman named Yui that gets sent to live with 6 vampire brothers by her adoptive priest father under the guise that they're "distant relatives" while he is called to work overseas in Eastern Europe.

Turns out that they are not relatives, and the church actually just abandoned her as a sacrificial bride to the vampires and she's stuck there. Yui is pretty much tormented and preyed upon by the brothers and treated like a blood bag on a daily basis because she happens to have special blood as her heart belonged to a notorious demon before her.

The brothers as sadistic as hell, and the themes in DL are not for everyone. There is heavy themes of abuse both physical and mental, so that's understandably a major turn off point to a lot of people. Yui is basically a pure cinnamon roll that treats the vampires with kindness regardless of how she is treated and this in turn helps the vampires heal from their traumas and become better people over time, and eventually fall in love with her.

Over the course of time, more vampires end up appearing and try to take Yui as their own over her blood because it's revealed she is what's called "Eve". A man named Karlheinz, which is the father of the main 6 Sakamaki brothers and king of Vampires has a grand master plan called "The Apple of Adam Plan" which basically comprises of having one of his sons "awaken" as Adam by falling in love with Eve and in turn, his goal is to have Adam and Eve create a new race and wipe out/replace the current demon species as a whole. The criteria to become Adam is to be a full blood vampire that learns how to love and feel emotions like a human, and the criteria for Eve is to be a human with demon blood, in this case, Yui.

Make sense? No? Don't worry it's kinda wonky. The anime does not do a good job at explaining any of this so if you actually want to enjoy any plot, you need to play the games. The anime is a good "oooh vampire fanservice!" Thing to watch.

The games unfortunately are not in English so you'll have to play them in Japanese, but I believe the first game or 2 have English patches that you can download online! The way I play them is buy a psvita and get the actual copy of the game and use online translation guides and most games and character routes are fully translated.

Dark Fate is by far the best game, but is 3rd in order of mainline games. Haunted Dark Bridal is first, followed by More Blood.

There's main games that are longer and follow the actual plot line of DL, then there's side games which are what they sound like. Not as plot focused, but more fluffy and shorter.

The actual order of games is as follows:

- Haunted Dark Bridal (main game)

- More Blood (main game)

- Vandead Carnival (side game)

- Dark Fate (main game)

- Lunatic Parade (side game)

- Chaos Lineage (main and side)

All in all, there are 13 vampires (two are technically a different species called Founders but that's not important atm) that are all after Yui's blood for either their own selfish reasons, just for food, or love. Depends on who's route you play and what game you play it in.

I hope that helped a little bit! Once again I am reallllyyyy bad at explaining things and I know there's stuff I'm forgetting to mention, but if you need anything else clarified please don't hesitate to ask!

ー The scene starts in the classroom

*Ding dongー Ding dongー*

Yui: Phew...Finally it’s the end of the day...

( I don’t have any after-school duties to take care of today, so I suppose I’ll head to the limousine early. )

*Rustle rustle*

Yui: ( Let’s see...Textbook goes inside the bag, now just to put away my pencase as weーー )

*THUD*

Reiji: Is Komori Yui present?

Yui: Eh? ...Reiji-san!?

( What brings him to my classroom...? )

ー Reiji walks up to Yui

Reiji: Aah, this is where you’ve been.

I have been looking for you. Now come with me.

*Rustle*

Yui: Eh? ...With you? What do you mean!?

Reiji: Exactly as I said it. Now hurry.

Yui: O-Okay...

( I wonder what he wants from me...? )

ー The scene shifts to the outside of the school

Yui: ( I just followed him for now but... )

Ah...It’s raining...

( I forgot to bring an umbrella with me. However, I guess I won’t need one since we’re going home by limousine. )

Reiji: Yui, what are you doing? Let us get going.

Yui: Eh? ...Where are we going...? Besides, I don’t think that’s where the limousine is parked...

Reiji: Why don’t we go home on foot today?

I’ve been wanting to get into DiaLovers for a while now, but I’m not sure where to start. Got any guides, recs, etc?

oh boy!! this is so exciting, u have a journey ahead of u! >:D

The games are the real meat of the series, so if you want to get into something ACTUALLY good then I recommend watching/reading them in order. The anime adaption is very short and it can be a good first introduction to the characters and the general concept, but you're not even gonna get 10% of the plot. Starting with the anime is fine too (I think most people here did that, and I did too) but I really really want you to understand that it's not actually the best representation of what the games are like. imo, the anime stops before it gets good anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If it's good for anything, it's good for meeting the main characters and getting a pretty good idea of what kind of people they are.

But the games!! This is where the cool stuff happens! There's a lot of games, but some of them are mostly for fanservice so they're optional. The order of games is like this:

Haunted Dark Bridal (for PS Vita or Switch*) More,Blood (for PS Vita or Switch*) Vandead Carnival (fanservice game, for PS Vita) Dark Fate (for PS Vita) Lunatic Parade (fanservice game, for PS Vita) Lost Eden (for PS Vita) Chaos Lineage (alternate universe, for Switch)

*HDB and MB can actually be purchased together for the switch through the Grand Edition

If you're into sadistic vampire stuff, the games towards the beginning are more your style. If you're more interested in like......demon wars, consensual blood sucking, and getting these guys some therapy, then the later games are gonna be for you. There's a main plot throughout these games, so I do recommend going in order.

The thing that stops most people is that these games are in Japanese only. But never fear, because they are translated online! You can check dialovers-translations, for instance! She's working through all the games and is nearly finished with Lost Eden.

You can always just read those translations alone, but I think that the audio and voice acting is pretty critical to the quality of the series (I mean, it's like 80% of the experience lol). You can try searching for playthroughs online, but I don't really know where to find them...or you could just purchase the games yourself and play them, of course. I think the first two games are pretty easy to emulate online, too.
