Dropping the latest Patreon Sketch-a-Wish for May! The opening scene for The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, featuring Cinder, Kai, Iko (who is basically an EVE/Wall-E love-child), an unconscious Nainsi and a bunch of easter egg items, as requested in our poll. (can you point them out?)
This was definitely one where the background itself was its own character; There's so much happening here and it's very nuanced to the context of the scene. I think those who aren't familiar with the book will have a hard time figuring out what's happening here - but seriously, caption this artwork: "Doting dad drops off his two android kids at day camp where the youngest has already stolen the cyborg foot off of the caretaker." ... and it still works. 😂
In order to fish for Easter Egg items, I re-listed to the Lunar Chronicles for the first time since I first read them a few years back; they were my gateway series into the bookish community and I absolutely fell in love with it all over again! I have Gilded on my TBR shortlist, and just recently listed to Heartless last month. I'm definitely on a Meyer bender, with the fabulous Rebecca Soler (the narrator) to keep me company!

Hello, everyone! My name is “Connie” (or Flower if you want to call me that) and welcome to my art! Here is my persona. And yes, I like flowers and stars, which is why my social media is called “FlowersOfStarlight”. 💖💜💕🌸🌼🌟✨🌌
I am a 21-year-old hobbyist artist who likes to draw. I am autistic and a Taiwanese-American. Both my parents were born in Taiwan and many of my family members speak Chinese and English. But I only speak English.
I only know several words that I can speak in Chinese like “Hello”, “Bye”, “Thank you”, “Happy Lunar New Year”.
I mainly draw fanarts from my favorite games, series, and movies. I like to draw my favorite characters and ideas I want to draw. And my birthday is on December 9. So, you can either draw my OCs or my persona as a birthday gift or say “Happy Birthday” in the comment or reblog when I post a gif on my birthday.
But I want to mention to you that I do NOT do request art, art trades, collab, and ships that you want me to draw. I’m NOT interested and there are many reasons why I don’t do those unless it’s my friends who I trusted. So please do not ask me to draw something you want me to draw. I only draw what I want to draw. And I am busy in college doing assignments, so it may take a week or more to post new art.
Anyway, when I draw fanarts in my free time, I sometimes like to either color or sketch them depending on my mood and if I feel like I want to color my drawings or not. I don’t do digital drawings because I’m more comfortable drawing with paper and color pencils only. I don’t have any drawing tablets and I’m not interested in it. I much prefer traditional drawing.
The fandoms I’m currently in are Welcome Home, Hello Puppets, and the Smiling Critters. My favorite games are Kirby, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man (classic), Minecraft: Story Mode, Poppy Playtime, Hello Puppets, Little Nightmares, Undertale, and Deltarune.
I don’t play video games anymore, I only watch gameplays on YouTube.
My number one favorite shows I really enjoyed watching are Amphibia and The Owl House. Avatar: The Last Airbender and Gravity Falls are also my favorite and were my childhood.
So yeah. That’s all I want to mention. 😊💖✨

Alright, opening sketch requests here again because why not? This will be open indefinitely. I will most likely only do one or two a day so I do ask for you to be patient if I get a big backlog, but I'll do my best to get to them in due time! ^^
Rules:
Send me an ask with your request! I have anon on so if you're shy it's no problem! ^^
NO OCs please! If you want me to draw your fandom oc and/or AU, you can DM me about art trades instead! ^^
Please keep it to ships or single characters for the most part! I mostly want to use these as opportunities to warm up lol
NO NSFW REQUESTS PLEASE! I don't wanna get in trouble with tumblr, and a lot of these characters are minors anyway so nope. (Same goes for ships of characters who are related to each other in some way. I don't do that.)
You are welcome to choose from this list of fandoms here, and if you have a fandom that's not on this list, if I know it, I might draw it ^^
Sonic the Hedgehog
Hollow Knight
Project Sekai
Hatsune Miku/vocaloid in general
Pokemon
Lackadaisy
Murder Drones
The Amazing Digital Circus
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Percy Jackson
The Lunar Chronicles
Six of Crows
Inuyasha
Sailor Moon
Demon Slayer (Though I've only finished season 1 so I do ask for no spoilers on that one please)
Hazbin Hotel
Helluva Boss

🐉 Year of the Dragon Lunar New Year DMBJ Treat Exchange 🐉
Tumblr media
We are going to HOP (get it… Year of the Rabbit!) into 2023 with an idea that is a new format for the DMBJ Fandom. The Lunar New Year Treat Exchange is a slow burn of an exchange, with low pressure and plenty of time to create, and is open to fan creators of all types - writers, artists, vidders, gif makers, and all others.
Based on the Fandom Stocking and Fandom Giftbox exchanges that used to run on LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, no-one will be assigned to create a gift for any specific person - instead, anyone who would like a treat signs up with their wishlist of characters, ships, likes, and prompts (and DNWs!). This list is open for browsing, and anyone who feels inspired to create for anyone else is free to do so and add the treat to the AO3 collection for the event. All treats will then be revealed at the Lunar New Year!
Since the New Year for ‘Year of the Rabbit’ is so soon (22 Jan 2023), the first LNY reveal will be for the ‘Year of the Dragon’, on 10 February 2024.
This exchange is open to all the DMBJ canons - if it’s DMBJ, then it’s eligible! Since all treats are to be posted to the AO3 collection, you will need an AO3 account to participate – if you don’t have one, you can request an invitation code here, or ask for an invitation from existing AO3 members.
🐉 Schedule 🐉
Sign-ups open: January 22nd, 2023 - The Year of the Rabbit
Sign-ups close: October 30th, 2023
Deadline for all treats completed and posted: January 21st, 2024
‘Pinch Hit’ period to ensure everyone signed up has at least one treat: January 21st - February 9th, 2024
Treats reveals: February 10th, 2024 - The Year of the Dragon
Creator reveals: February 17th, 2024
🐉 Guidelines 🐉
1. You can start creating treat fills whenever you like - you do not have to wait for sign-ups to close.
2. You do not have to sign up with a request yourself in order to create a treat for someone else.
3. While you do not have to create a treat for someone else if you sign up with requests for treats yourself, we ask that you do create at least one treat.
4. When choosing requests to treat for, please prioritise anyone who does not yet have a treat (the list of requests will be regularly updated to show Y/N as to whether or not someone has a treat fill yet).
     a. If there is anyone without a treat fill by the time of the deadline, mods will ask for people to create treats so that everyone who signed up receives at least one treat.
5. Your creation/s must focus on your recipient’s requested characters or ship (or one or more of their requested ships, if they have nominated multiple ones). While unrequested background ships are fine (unless listed as a Do Not Want), if it is a shippy creation then the focused ship/s must be one or more of the requested ships.
6. You will be expected to create a treat matching your recipient’s request. Filling any specifying prompts is not obligatory, but try to create something you honestly think your recipient will enjoy!
7. You must not include anything that your recipient has listed as a DNW (Do Not Want). Not even as a one-line throwaway reference.
8. The minimum requirements for the treats are 300 words for fic, one sketch on unlined paper for art (traditional or digital), a 3 panel manip or set of 3 single panel manips, a fanvid of any length, or any other fanwork of equal effort.
9. You can create as many treats as you like over the creation period.
10. This is an anonymous exchange: refrain from discussing your assignment in public. After the works are revealed, there’ll be a one-week anon period when the creators remain anonymous before the creator reveals.
11. You are welcome to post your treat to other sites in addition to AO3, such as Lofter, but please ensure that you do post it to AO3 as well so that your giftee gets the notification.
12. Most importantly: be excellent to each other!
🐉 Sign-Up Information 🐉
Sign-ups will take place via Google Form, starting on January 22nd, 2023. The form will be posted in a separate post when sign-ups begin.
The form will ask you for your name and for a link to your Dear Creator letter. Your Dear Creator letter is where you will fill out your request, and can be hosted anywhere you like - Tumblr, Dreamwidth, Google Docs, etc.
Sign-ups will close on October 30th, 2023. While no new sign-ups will be accepted after this date, you are still able to make amendments to your Dear Creator letter.
Treat creation can begin at any time after January 22nd - you do not have to wait for sign-ups to close before creating treats.
🐉 Dear Creator Letters 🐉
Your Dear Creator letter should contain the following information:
Preferred DMBJ canon: You have to choose at least one. If you’re willing to receive a treat in any canon era, you can just say “Any”!
Characters: You have to choose at least one character that you would like your treat to be about.
Relationships: These can be any platonic, romantic, or sexual relationships you would like in a treat. “None” is a perfectly valid answer here.
General Likes: This isn’t a place for detailed prompts, just general themes you enjoy. E.g. getting together, established relationship, alternate universe, dark, crack, hurt/comfort, etc.
DNW (Do Not Wants): Things that your creator must not include - squicks, triggers, or characters or things that you simply don’t like. Remember that you don’t owe anyone an explanation about why something is a DNW, and that DNWs are not meant to be taken personally. Just list the things you don’t like, “DNW: X, Y.”
Prompts/specific ideas: if you have any prompts, you can also put them here! You can be as general or as detailed as you’d like, but remember that while your creator will try to make the best gift for you, filling a specific prompt is not obligatory. You can include a crossover prompt (with other DMBJ verse or other canons entirely), but make sure it’s not the only prompt you have.
Please note in your Dear Creator letter if you are happy to receive a treat in Chinese.
You can make changes to your Dear Creator letter at any time, but please keep in mind that the later you make changes, the higher the chance that someone may have already created a treat for you that will not have those changes taken into account - this includes late DNW additions, so please try to ensure that any/all DNWs are listed as early as possible, and that late changes are just additions to prompts and things you like.
🐉 Multi-chapter Fics 🐉
If you are writing a multi-chapter fic for a treat and don’t want to drop the entire fic at once, these are the posting guidelines for it:
At least the first chapter posted by the deadline, ready for the reveals on February 10.
From February 10, aim to post at least one chapter daily.
All chapters of the fic must be posted by the time of creator reveals on February 17 (If the fic is more than 7 chapters long, then this will mean that multiple chapters will need to be posted on some days).
🐉 Other Info 🐉
If you have any questions, ask on the YuCun Discord or submit a question to @dmbjexchange or @thetombraidersguild
Please follow @dmbjexchange or @thetombraidersguild for announcements and reminders.

creator tag meme
rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 favourite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc!) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2018. Tag as many writers/artists/etc as you want (fan or original!) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
the sweetest @jediknightrey tagged me for this game and it’s time for little me to sob in pain because I can’t choose faves xD
(I’ll do my three main mediums in separate lists because... yeah xD)
ART:
My Wintersong x Labyrinth crossover with Liesl. Ever since I read the first book early in January I had been dying to do something that could show my love for the movie and the book. At the end of the year I finally got around to work on the sketch I did sometime during inktober and omg it is NOT how I imagined it to look like but I AM PROUD!
My Tana Bach in chibi style. I wanted to try something new and I did so with this. Style and program haha. Really happy with it, even if it didn’t do so well lol
“You leave me breathless” aka steamy Nikolina. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH STEAMY (VISUAL) CONTENT FOR THEM AND I HAD THE NEED TO DO IT AND I DID!! Even if it took me way longer than usual because the lineart was out to get me alskjdalk. I also love how my brain has a go-to colour scheme for them XD
Feysand Sunset. I could hate it and this piece would still hit my activity every day lol. I’m really happy with it because the pose was so damn dynamic and I GOT IT! And the outfits too, and Rhys’ skin+hair. I was so nervous about getting it wrong, even if I used all the refs I could find on the fancast haha. A friend who had no idea of what this is about told me it DID look like he was middle-eastern and I was super happy because I was getting cross-eyed and unsure of everything. Also, I did a fancy background and sparkly dress :D ALL THE SPARKLES
Nikolina Wedding. SIMPLY PUT MY MAGNUS OPUS FOR THESE TWO. I had a concept, I achieved it! I absolutely love it. I had so much fun with the soft aesthetic and painting them. The clothes! I put more work into the details than anyone will notice unless they purchase the biggest print ever. But who careS??? Also, Alina’s hair!! I hit the nail in this piece and IT SHOWS!!!
EDITS:
My Eureka Character Aesthetics series. As unkown as this show is here, I still felt the need to work on something Big for it. I remembered how fun doing this project was for The 10th Kingdom, so I did it for this show too. I miscalculated how many I would have to do aslkda but I still had so much fun with it. It was TOUGH as heck at times to find pics to fit each character’s unique aesthetic and personality but I did it!! I got to the end of it with a series of edits that I’m super happy with. ALSO, the psd I made for it works so well for so many other edits??? I DID A THING!!
This Kileana edit. sure the third book let me down after the amazingness of books 1 and 2 of The Falconer but lately I’ve been in a huge Kiaran x Aileana feels mood and I had to do something for them. Something soft and focusing on that epic vow of Kiaran. EPIC ROMANTIC VOWS?? YES PLEASE!!
This Doraelin edit. Look, I love them, they’re soft and perfect. And I had to do something soft and (near)perfect for them!! Especially since it was a gift! I’m still in awe I did it so well haha. Also, those quotes of theirs are so... foreshadow-y. still offended the foreshadowing was tossed aside ¬.¬
This Lunar Chronicles aesthetic. Basically, LEVELING UP!! I grew so much in my aesthetics/picspams style since I started doing TLC edits, and this is one of my VERY BEST. I love the colours and how the pics work so well together alksdakh
The Five Great Queens (10th Kingdom) series that’s ongoing lol. I’m really happy with the whole project so far. But I’m currently stuck on the next queen and headcanons for her XD
BONUS: Fairytale AU for Kai x Cinder and Steamy Nikolina edit. I LOVE THEM.
WRITING:
She’s Magic. AU where Nikolai and Alina are illustionists/magicians(?). Basically an excuse to have both in a magic au hahaha. Think Celia x Marco from The Night Circus kind of magic romance. (Not that hardcore on the slow burn tho). I had so much fun with it. Y’all have no idea!
This Wolfinia one shot. I’m just really happy I got these two right haha. I love the way Wolf talks to Virginia, so unique and eager and honest :D
Unwrap Me. AU where Doraelin are married and ruling together and are just ACHING for some one-on-one Yulemas celebrations asldja. It’s here mostly because I hadn’t written them in ages and I was really happy with this self-indulgent au xD Plus, Dorian would totes pull that gift stunt ;D
Sappy Smutty Fics Fest. While I was so worn out of writing so much smut I had to Take a Break alskdha I had so much fun with it and the feedback?? I never got so many requests (and so varied!!) for a fic request game. Got quite a few that I’m happy with in it ;) I also still have one for Heartless, but I won’t write it until I reread the book. Hopefully I will in early 2019.
So This is Love. THE CINDERELLA AU FOR NIKOLINA THAT WAS JUST A HALLOWEEN ONE-SHOT AND TURNED INTO A LONG FIC!!! Saints I LOVED writing it. Thinking of this au for them brings me the biggest of grins and writing it did that too as well haha. I just... Nikolina and Cinderella AU, what a better match??? (Maybe a fake-relationship au hmmm)
tagging... @theleiaskywalker @newrcmantlcs @caradocdearborn @akivas @stupidape @williamsherondales @kimseaokjin @kestrel-of-herran @fullofgrief

My Darling Illidari child in her Lunar New Year Finest. I finished with enough time to slip in one more commission before the WrA festival event this weekend too!  Check out my commissions if you’d like to see your character kitted out for the celebration! *Edit: 2/8/2019 Sadly, it’s too late to get your commission finished before tomorrow unless you ask for a sketch commission. However I’m still happy to accept Lunar New Year themed requests after the Festival!

Summer 2018 Bomber Sketch Requests: CLOSED
[EDIT: All slots are now filled!]
Well, guys, today is my birthday, and you know what that means! That’s right: presents.
Not for me, though. For you.
/AIRHORNS!!!!!
Tumblr media
Once again, I’ll be taking sketch requests for Bomberman characters (canon or fanmade)! This round will run from August 7th until 11:59PM CST on August 14th. As before, please, please read the rules below before you request anything from me, especially because I’ve changed them from last time.
If you’re curious about previous rounds, check my requests tag on Tumblr and my requests folder on deviantArt!
As stated, your request has to be for a Bomberman character! Whether that’s a canon character, an AU of a canon character, a bombersona, a fan character, or a character that you want me to bomberize, I’m only doodling bombers for this, because as a grown-ass woman I always prioritize Bomberman.
This time, requests will be open simultaneously on Tumblr and deviantArt! There will be seven (7) slots each per site, which means fourteen (14) slots in total! Once they’re filled, that it for this round of requests. Sorry, everyone, I had fun last time and I love y’all for requesting, but the response was pretty overwhelming and it killed my hand and wrist for a while. Between dA and Tumblr, I had forty requests. /facesmush into soft block
Due to the restriction on the number of requests I’ll be working on, I will now allow up to two (2) characters in a picture! Believe it: all y’all filthy-ass shippers out there can now get your ship on with me if that is what your explosive little heart desires. Or you can just have two characters platonically Netflixing. Or two characters doing completely unrelated things. Whatevs! Look, just drop the deets, okay?
Also due to the new rules, I’m limiting requests to one (1) request per person for this round! This is so everyone who wants something from me has an equal chance of doing so. If you request something from me on deviantArt, you can’t request something else via Tumblr (and vice versa)! If I catch you trying to get around this due to having different usernames/handles between deviantArt and Tumblr, I will deny both of your requests. Honor the honor system, and as always, first come, first serve!
No fetish or porn requests, as usual! Nothing overall offensive or abusive either. Be nice, bomberlings. I reserve the right to reject requests at my discretion.
No guarantee on how fast these will get done, but based on previous experience I can apparently dump these out fairly quickly. That being said, I’m going out of town for the weekend of August 17th-19th, so if I can’t get to requests before then for whatever reason, I’ll pick them up when I get back.
Requests will ONLY be accepted through deviantArt Notes or Tumblr messages!
(Character featured in the promo art is Megumi, an OC of mine. Nothing particularly special about her -- at this point she’s more of a legacy character than anything.)
If you miss out on requests, or want art from me that’s not Bomberman-themed, consider commissioning me instead!

Random Text (with some WIP)
Welp, I am just being a busy bee and working on some personal art as well as a set of requests, and also wanted to say thank you for all the reblogs and likes on the photos!
With that said, I wanted to ask if there were any particular characters people want me to make sure to create for the Chalk Sketch Drawing things I have. I already am planning to finish up both squad groups for Mass Effect (The Trilogy and Andromeda), Saren, Morinth, Nihlus, Aria, Nyreen, and two of my OCs from the Mass Effect Universe as well as doing some Overwatch Lunar New Year (WHICH WILL BE LATE AS FUDGE) and some Uprising ones. Though wanted to ask if there is anyone else I should add to the roster! Also as a side side note, I may open up five free slots for some Chalk chibi icons sooo heads up on that... (I have no date when I will post it [maybe soonish?]). Also gonna just dump some WIPs here so enjoy them!

524: Twelve to the Moon
There are 50's sci-fi movies with wonderful titles like The Monster that Challenged the World and IT! The Terror from Beyond Space. I poke fun at how irrelevant or misleading some of them are, but I actually love them: there's nothing better to entice me to see a silly movie than a deliriously hyperbolic title!  Then there's this film, Twelve to the Moon, which is about twelve people going to the moon.  No points for the title guy.
Despite that, I rather like Twelve to the Moon.  It's not my favourite of the MST3K Moon movies – that would be Moon Zero Two – but it's a hell of a lot less annoying than either Rocketship XM or Project Moon Base.  There's some earnest effort that seems to have gone into this film, even when the effects budget was not equal to the filmmakers' ambitions.  The result is not a good movie but it is a functional one, and in the land of MST3K fodder that ain't half bad.
So let's start with the stuff that works.  There's a few places where Twelve to the Moon really did get something right, or at least, where its heart was clearly in the right place even if the follow-through didn't work out.  For one thing, they don't spend half the movie hanging around in space talking about stuff.  They have to dodge a meteor shower, but I'm pretty sure that was mandated by the Space Movie Union rules in the 50's.  Other than that, there is some flight time with dialogue, but unlike the pointless bullshit that consumed significant parts of Fire Maidens of Outer Space and almost all of Rocketship XM, in Twelve to the Moon this actually sets up some honest-to-gosh plot points.
We get a brief sketch of some of the characters, of their attitude towards the trip and their area of expertise.  We meet the animals they're bringing with them, and see the technology that makes the trip possible – some of this, like the sonic shower and the invention of the screenshot, is filler, but some, like the mentions of nuclear power and foreshadowing of Heinrich's heart attack, is important.  It's actually kind of neat that they included some irrelevancies, since it means we don't know which parts will turn out to be vital later.  And we get a setup of the film's main human conflict, Heinrich's distancing from his father's war crimes and what it means for his relationship with his protege David.
The movie also makes quite an earnest attempt to portray people who are different getting along for the sake of the common good.  The characters clearly disagree about a lot of things but when fights break out they're usually quieted pretty quickly.  Somebody put at least a little thought into where each member of the crew came from and how that would be reflected in their personalities, though the results are not especially nuanced.  Furthermore, even when they argue the characters mostly treat each other with respect. The women are allowed to be useful instead of just being there so the men will have girls to kiss.  The black guy is not treated badly on account of either his race or his faith.  Twelve to the Moon really, really wants to be progressive and whatever you think of the result there's certainly less of the Unfortunate Implications that plagued Women of the Prehistoric Planet.
The surface of the Moon as presented in this movie is actually pretty cool.  The backdrops are suitably craggy and desolate, and the black and white film actually adds to the effectiveness of it.  Even when we get stuff like the geysers, the quicksand, and the corals, that enrage Tom Servo by clearly not belonging on the moon, they look pretty neat.  This is obviously where the production spent most of its money and I have to say, good call.  If you’re only going to show us one really cool thing in your trip-to-the-moon movie, best make sure that’s the moon itself!
A related good decision was how the movie never actually shows us the Moon People.  Anything they could have put together on their budget would have been disappointing at best and laughable at worst. By keeping the Moon People off-camera, they are made an ominous presence in the movie, unknowable, unpredictable, and with powers we cannot comprehend.  This is far scarier than people in silly 'moon men' costumes would have been!
Finally, to my grateful astonishment, the movie does not have a love triangle in it!  With ten men and two women on the Lunar Eagle, they could easily have gone that way, but they didn't! Hideko has no love interest at all, and so little time is spent on the romance between the two physicians that when they pull off their helmets and kiss it comes as a complete surprise.  Instead, the movie derives its human drama from the differing political views of the characters.  It's still kind of beside the point of the main 'moon adventure' plot but it's not nearly so tired and cliché as the romantic angle would have been.
Of course, a lot went wrong in this movie, too.  For starters, there are far too many characters.  We simply don't have time to get to know the entire cast: there are too many names and faces to remember, and while we do get an outline of each person, we get no more than that.  Some of the irrelevant stuff that added colour to the first half of the film could have been cut to make room for setting up Dr. Martel's dislike of Americans, or at least to give a brief setup to the romance.  The cast could have been cut down by half, while the film told the same story in a much tighter and more engaging fashion.
Then there are the effects.  I mentioned that the movie spent most of its effects budget on the moonscapes. This means there was not much left for anything else and... yeah. You can tell.  Whether we're watching model spacecraft on sticks, or the cast getting bombarded by cartoon meteors, or the kleig lights intruding into the top of a shot, you can certainly see the cheapness on the screen. The worst moment of all is when we see two men who are supposed to be flying a smaller rocket ship, sitting in front of a blank wall with the shot framed to crop out an instrument panel that does not actually exist.
Perhaps the lack of budget is why they went with the 'invisible force field helmet' thing... maybe they couldn't afford twelve custom-made glass or plastic face plates, plus extras in case of breakage.  Or maybe they worried that reflections on the material would make it hard to see the actors' faces and tell who was who. Either way, they probably would have done better to just pretend there were helmets there, rather than draw attention to their absence – though actor Richard Weber delivers the line with admirable conviction.
A lack of budget is the studio's fault, not the film-makers', but where the movie really stops making sense is when the Moon People decide to make actual contact with the human crew.  They do this by transmitting a series of symbols that pop up on the Lunar Eagle's computer, and which more than anything else remind me of the 'hieroglyphics' supposedly found on the Roswell UFO wreckage.  I don't know if this was intentional on the part of the film-makers... Roswell was mostly forgotten after it happened and didn't become big news until conspiracy types started looking into it in 1978.  What's really weird about the symbols is not what might have inspired them, but the fact that Hideko can translate them.
Tumblr media
What?  The picture-writing we're shown doesn't look anything like Japanese, or any other logographic language I can think of.  Just because Hideko can read one type of pictogram doesn't mean she can necessarily read others – I can read the Roman and Greek alphabets, but that sure as hell wouldn’t help me with Sanskrit or Inuktitut!  Is this one of those things where the aliens came to Earth thousands of years ago and left their language behind, and Hideko just happens to have studied it? Because that would be awfully convenient.
The other possibility that occurs is that the aliens deliberately chose to communicate in a language they knew their guests would understand... but if that's the case, it seems more likely that they would have just done it in one of the languages spoken by their two captives, which would give them a choice of Turkish, Swedish, or English.  The Moon People clearly understand at least one of those languages, since they mention that the hostages “say they are in love”, so why bother with the pictograms at all?
The later actions of the Moon People don't really make any sense, either.  'Leave the cats and go home' seems like a fairly reasonable request (given the option of two cats or twelve humans, I know which I would choose to keep), but then they freeze the Earth so that the Lunar Eagle cannot land.  A later communication makes it sound like this was a test of the crew's willingness to support each other and sacrifice themselves to the greater good of humanity, but was it really necessary to freeze the planet in order to do that?  They'd surely already seen that these squabbling primates worked together well enough to get themselves to the moon, and tried to save their colleagues who were in danger.  It really just seems like the Moon People want to make the point that they can snuff humanity's candle out any time they like... which doesn't make them seem that much more peaceful or enlightened than us, honestly.
So yeah, there's a lot of stuff that sucks here, too, and between that and the good bits the movie balances out somewhere in the vicinity of 'tragically mediocre'.  Despite all that, I really do kind of like this one.  Twelve to the Moon wants to be not just an entertaining movie but an important one, one with an optimistic vision of the future and a message for all mankind.  It fails, but it fails in such ways that I really would like to give it points for trying.
Except for the title guy.  He didn't try at all.

Science fiction authors Andy #Weir and Neal Stephenson look at life after ‘The Martian’

Science fiction authors Andy #Weir and Neal Stephenson look at life after ‘The Martian’
Sci-fi writer Andy Weir (“The Martian,” “Artemis”) makes a degree whereas Neal Stephenson (“Seveneves,” “The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.”) seems to be on.
What may very well be higher than listening to a science fiction author speak about learn how to create complete new worlds? How about doubling that to 2 science fiction writers?
That was the case for a Seattle-area look by Andy Weir — the writer of “The Martian” and “Artemis,” a just-released novel set on a moon colony within the 2080s.
When he confirmed up at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park on Thursday, he introduced alongside Seattle’s personal Neal Stephenson, the writer of science-fiction novels starting from “Snow Crash” to “Seveneves” to “The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.”
A standing-room-only crowd of 600 or so heard Weir and Stephenson maintain forth on the writing racket. Listed below are some gems from the dialog:
How does Weir start writing a novel? “It’s all about beginning with the world-building, after which transferring into the story,” he mentioned. For “Artemis,” the previous engineer sketched out the complete design for a moon base, proper right down to how the domes for the habitats have been constructed.
“I didn’t make a bodily mannequin, however I made maps,” Weir mentioned.
For the moonbase builders on the market, Artemis’ domes have two 6-centimeter-thick layers of aluminum, with a meter of ground-up lunar rock in between. The area between the aluminum layers is segmented into triangular compartments with strain sensors. If anybody compartment is breached, the sensors instantly alert Artemis’ managers to make repairs.
Weir tried to maintain “Artemis” — and “The Martian,” for that matter — as near real-world science as he might. He mentioned he hates to see inconsistencies in science fiction, and “actual physics is great at sustaining consistency.”
That carried over to events when “Martian” movie director Ridley Scott requested his recommendation. He recalled telling Scott that astronaut Mark Watney, the film’s protagonist, wouldn’t pour poisonous hydrazine gas from one open container to a different — and certain sufficient, Watney makes use of a sealed hose within the movie scene.
“I’m glad you set Ridley straight on that one,” Stephenson cracked. “That will have ruined the film for me.”
Weir admits there’s often not less than one little bit of physics that finally ends up getting bent. In “The Martian,” it needed to do with making the Purple Planet’s winds stronger than they’re in actuality. Weir mentioned “there may be one little bit of science in ‘Artemis’ that doesn’t exist in the true world,” however he averted going into element for concern of spoiling the story.
The principle character in “Artemis” is a down-on-her-luck, irreverent lunar porter who comes from a standard Muslim household. Weir mentioned he took pains to make sure that the character didn’t strike a improper cultural observe. The hardest a part of the job was writing from a girl’s perspective, he mentioned.
“Aerodynamics is straightforward,” he mentioned. “Considering like a girl is tougher for me.”
Weir shared his manuscript with girls starting from his mom and his girlfriend to his editor’s boss, simply to ensure the writer’s voice rang true. “I took their recommendation, and made the adjustments accordingly,” he mentioned.
When Weir was requested about his favourite a part of the “Martian” film, he went with a scene that reveals the countdown to the launch of essential aid mission, the hopeful seems to be on the faces of the characters managing the mission, the liftoff of the rocket … after which the explosion that destroys the rocket.
“I hope I ripped your hearts proper out of your ribcage,” he joked.
That obtained an increase out of the viewers, however one of many greatest applause strains got here when a questioner requested Weir which Hogwarts home Watney would go together with if he have been in a “Harry Potter” film.
“He appears sort of Hufflepuff, doesn’t he?” Weir replied.
“THANK YOU!” the questioner mentioned.
In response to a different query, Weir mentioned his favourite science-fiction writer was Isaac Asimov. Stephenson adopted up by choosing Robert Heinlein. Then Weir added Arthur C. Clarke to fill out what he referred to as the “holy trinity” of science fiction writers.
Weir included a tribute to Heinlein and one among his best-known novels, “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress,” by having one of many characters in “Artemis” replicate on the tough realities of lunar life.
“The moon’s a imply previous bitch,” the character says on web page four. “She doesn’t care why your go well with fails. She simply kills you when it does.”
Stephenson has been identified to hang around at Blue Origin, the Seattle-area area enterprise that’s backed by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos. So it was pure for him to ask Weir whether or not he’d ever wish to take a trip on a spaceship.
“No, no, no,” Weir replied. “I write about courageous individuals, I’m not one among them. I’d don’t have any curiosity by any means in going into area. I don’t even wish to fly. I’m proper now in the course of a book-tour dying march … so, principally, as the tip end result, I’m popping Valium like Pez.”
Each Weir and Stephenson have initiatives coming to a display close to you. Stephenson’s breakout novel from 1992, “Snow Crash,” is being made right into a present for Amazon Prime, and movie director Ron Howard is engaged on a big-screen adaptation of “Seveneves.”
In the meantime, Weir mentioned Fox has already acquired the movie rights for Weir’s “Artemis.” Seattle-area native Aditya Sood has signed on as a producer, and the directorial duties are going to Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Past that, there’s not a lot data out there concerning the mission.
“Issues transfer slowly in Hollywood, till they transfer very, very quick,” Weir mentioned.
Weir is kind of accustomed to the Hollywood routine by now, because of his expertise with “The Martian.”
“Once you’re the author of a e-book that will get made right into a film, your essential job is to money the test,” he mentioned.
