Harry Transported into the World of Vanitas no Carte (Crossover AU/Fanfic Concept)

General Overview

To combine my current hyperfixation (Harry Potter) with one of my other long-term hyperfixations (Vanitas no Carte) my brain very frequently likes to put Harry through the MochiJun Experience (because he obviously hasn’t suffered enough)

Taking advantage of the Department of Mysteries’ endlessly ✨mysterious✨ nature, we’re gonna throw 15-year-old Harry, fresh from battle, into the world of VNC. Let me set up the small bit of background that I bothered with. A device constructed by a long-vanished vampire who ended up alone in the Wizarding world, whether by choice or exile, gets hit by the chaos of battle. Harry, the main character that he is, happens to be alone with it when it activates. He’s whisked away to the time of the interlude chapters, just after Noé and Vanitas have their attempted murder divorce (courtesy of my son, Misha).

Tada! Harry can add isekai protagonist to his resume now too. But he has to relearn how to use magic in a world with a different framework. A world where he doesn’t have so much weighing on his shoulders. He gets to be free from the prophecy, free from the Horcrux, and it makes sense that Vanitas would notice something off about his soul. I consider True Names and souls to be in the same realm of things. They’re a person’s essence, the shape behind their magic. “Dr.” (this man’s never been to medical school) Vanitas swoops in and gets Harry set right. To ashes and dust with the Horcrux.

Throw Harry into the midst of characters who make him question the structures around him. He’s no longer in a school dividing its students by personal characteristics and life outlooks. Now, he has to keep company with a wide array of dysfunctional companions. They’re also mostly a few years older than him (in the case of the main cast), or a few years younger than him (in the case of Mikhail). Then there’s one who’s actually about his own age (Astolfo). He has to get accustomed to having drastically different people around him. But still, he can relate to them in ways he couldn’t with anyone in his own world. He especially empathizes with the Dhams because the social inequity they face is similar to the kind he understands from what he’s seen before. Sometimes, he feels guilty for appreciating being able to relate to characters like Vanitas. Of course, he misses everyone back home…but…it’s so nice to feel seen.

Harry’s similar to Vanitas in that he’d rather greet death than be transformed into an immortal being against his will. I’d like to make him suffer as Vanitas has. This comes in the form of Faustina marking Harry, taking his choice to greet death with open arms. The mark of the Crimson Moon and his eyes burn like the fire of a phoenix. It’s a horrifying rebirth, and he harbors the same anger as Vanitas over it. Of course, there are somewhat different feelings mixed in there. The vampire who marked him was an enemy rather than family, after all. Since we don’t know much about the fights to come in VNC, I’m keeping the conflict vague. There’s war again. Vampires vs. vampires, vampires vs. the Church, and whatever’s being set up with the Dhams right now. Harry’s there for five years, and it’s during the later stages of this conflict that he’s marked. The events of VNC have played out at the end of that time. Vanitas and Faustina have died, leaving Mikhail as the last to inherit Luna’s powers and Harry as the last to inherit Faustina’s powers.

This series of events will most likely be completely blown away by the canon timeline when it comes around (which I of course look forward to).

After all this, Harry returns home, back to the very moment he left. It was a toss-up whether the device would send him back to the time he left or if it would send him back with the same amount of time having passed in each world. It might depend on what the device’s user does. They’re still figuring out how it works. Naturally, Harry’s goal is to seek out the vampire who made it, and usually I make that vampire a de Sade. Now Harry has to figure that out in addition to the Voldemort shit. Not to mention the new personal issues that he has to work through.

Oh, to be changed and feel almost like a stranger when returning home. Five years have passed for Harry. The battle is the same as he left it. Will he try to hide the changes in himself to keep a sense of normalcy, the sense of nostalgia? He’s not quite human, and not quite a vampire just yet. I love the idea that he comes back wrong, returning to his world, but now with his very soul and magic rewritten.

If my brain’s craving a little chaos, then I’ll throw in some other versions of Harry Potter characters, whether displaced across time or worlds (or both!). They’re like dolls to me. It really depends how far from canon I want to diverge (usually not terribly far since I’m a bit of a stickler for it, at least in the case of characterization).

Anyway! What I wouldn’t give to know more about what’s coming in VNC! There’s so much that’s up in the air right now. We know we’re in for a lot of pain soon, so maybe playing around with the possibilities is a bit of a comfort. What would a war in the setting of VNC do to Harry’s development? How would the different approach to writing affect him? How would he view the people he left back home after everything?

Those are some things I like to think about within the larger story. The larger plot itself is easy enough to change, but the little tidbits remain about the same. Each author has such a different approach to world and character building. I’m so fond of MochiJun’s writing (less so of Rowling’s), and I also appreciate Harry as a main character. It would be awesome to see how MochiJun would approach the story of Harry Potter, and playing around with the possibilities is a great deal of fun to me. Rewriting Harry Potter through her lens would be a much larger undertaking though. So, instead, I send Harry into her world.

Other Tidbits

1. I like the idea of Harry becoming good friends with Domi. She has an interesting mix of characteristics that would make it hard for Harry to view her through the house framework, and I think becoming friends with her would be a big part of him reconstructing his view of people. He shares some traits with her (and other characters) that would push him to self-reflect in interesting ways too.

2. Imagine Harry hearing about Luna and being reminded of his loyal friend by the same name (ough ough the angst)

3. Following that, I think he would understand her better now. VNC would have untethered him in some ways. In addition to more life experience, he would have grown to understand that which is outside of his view more than before.

4. Thank fuck he would be in a text that explores and criticizes abuse in a way that doesn’t echo Rowling’s weird dynamics that cast women as less capable of being perpetrators in certain contexts (namely those of relationships and sexuality). If there’s one thing I appreciate about MochiJun, it’s that her women can be awful freaks just as much as her men can.

5. I like to think about the ways vampires get inside each other’s heads. They clearly have some supernatural mind abilities (like we see with the Archivistes, Naenia, and Ruthven). That could be interesting to explore in the context of Wizard mind magic, though I know Occlumency is often over-utilized in fanfiction. Exploring the variations of how the magic works is interesting. The Archivistes’ ability is similar to Occlumency in that you need more direct contact, though it’s a one-time use. However, we still don’t know much more about that clan’s abilities. Naenia/Faustina has far more open access to the minds of others. It seems like she needs minimal contact. Lastly, Ruthven’s is probably the most similar to Occlumency (if you threw in a little Imperio, yikes). I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out more in the future. (Fingers crossed)

6. I’m curious about Loki Oriflamme since we know so little about him. That makes it fun for me to play around with him as another character Harry could become involved with.

7. Also, I’m absolutely using the timing of this AU as an excuse to keep Sirius alive. It would be a lot of fun to explore their relationship after Harry comes back so changed. Harry would have become more reserved in ways that might be beneficial to Sirius, and help him grow as a person too. Harry’s a lot more understanding now.

8. I think it would also be fun to see how Harry handles interactions with Snape. At this point, he’ll have developed a much different management of his emotions and temper, so I think it could be fun to see them snipe back and forth a little, lol. Who knows, maybe he could have an effect on Snape too (albeit one Snape would find intensely irritating, lol).

9. I love the parallels of Harry’s rebirth with that of a Phoenix. See the burning colors of one in the signs of the Crimson vampire. Death as a human, slowly being born as a vampire. Reborn in body and soul. More than that, he’s changed as a person.

10. He would have grown into his trait of exceptional loyalty during his time in the world of VNC. More than that, it comes from love. A key point of MochiJun’s characters is that they’re deeply, deeply flawed, and love comes in spite of that. They have so much depth to them and they inflict a great deal of conflicting feelings on the reader. So, Harry would come to have more forgiveness to his loyalty, more tenderness. He still burns with it, but it’s a more controlled flame. He’s already canonically loyal to the people he cares about in spite of disagreement and anger, but after VNC, this trait reaches an even greater extent than before.

10. Lastly, I couldn’t go without mentioning my favorite Harry Potter blorbo: Dumbledore. Harry’s parallels with a phoenix and his growth as a person make him so much fun to play with regarding that relationship. Dumbledore is flawed, though not as much as some of the people Harry has grown to care for in the world of VNC. Harry sees the other people he cares about in Dumbledore and feels the need to comfort him. The self-hatred, isolation, and masks that Harry’s companions also share become visible to him now that he looks at Dumbledore through mature eyes. Regret. It’s something he’s seen countless times in the eyes of vampires, muggles, and magic folk alike. It’s what he sees when he looks in the mirror. If Dumbledore can’t forgive himself, then Harry will forgive him in his stead.

PLAY MUSIC

Holding her felt wrong in the most damned way possible but it also felt like heaven, if there ever was one. His hands travelled down her shape, taking in every single detail, kissing her in places that he didn’t think he’d ever see. Places that he never thought, she’d allow him. She was a maze to him, searching for a way out but she had him wrapped around her finger, wrapped around her body.

Her fingers dug on his back while he moved over her, leaving his mark in her skin and inside her. He couldn’t help but laugh in when he heard her slight moans. When she called his name repeatedly. When she cursed and held on his arm like she was holding on for dear life. His laugh would die out every time she took control, her lips leaving an invisible mark anywhere and everywhere.

They laid next to each other, as naked as they ever would be. She’d play with his fingers, tapping them and counting them. She didn’t say anything when they were done, she didn’t even look him in the eye, didn’t try to make a moment. He didn’t either. What could he say that would be enough to explain what he was laughing when he didn’t even know what he was feeling. It was all a chaos in his mind, was fucking her just a way to get her on his side. Was it anger? Pure jealousy? Was it real? He watched her fingers while she moved them in between his, interlocking with each other in just another way for the night. Her head on his chest, hearing his heartbeat, listening to every single part of himself, right after she had seen every single part of himself too. Suddenly she moved away, turning her back on him, and sleeping on her side of the bed. He laid on the side, lifting his body enough just to be able to look at the right side of her face.

“You, ok?” he asked. First time either of them spoke ever since the ended in the same bed. He kissed her ear, her shoulder, her arm, her elbow. His arm hovering over her, but waiting for her to respond before he put it around her. She nodded.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She took his hand herself, holding it up to her lips. He moved closer, taking his place as the big spoon. He nuzzled in the back of her neck, kissing it too. She wasn’t fine, but neither was he because he had never been more confused in his life. Is this what they called hate fuck? It didn’t feel like it because he cared about this woman even if he didn’t know how to show it.

She fell asleep right there, in his arms. He couldn’t sleep. He heard something getting knocked over, jumped in the bed. Taylor moved slightly, but didn’t wake up. He could see something moving I the dark, something like a tiny ghost, but then it turned, two glowing eyes making a difference in the darkness. Luna threw another pen from the desk. Taylor moving again slightly. He got up, walking over to the cat. He laughed

“You must be Luna”

Meow.

“Sh. Your mama is sleeping. Tranquilles”

Luna seemed to be listening to him, she sat tall, curling her tail under her tiny body. Then she meowed again like she was asking for something, He smiled. “You must be hungry. Does she ever feed you?” he asked, laughing. He reached for the light on the desk, opening it. He could see Luna better now, she was pretty cat, looked as dangerous and sweet as her mother. He smiled at the comparison. Luna got of the desk, uncovering the file she was sitting on. It was a white one, labelled as “PSG PLAYER REPORTS”. Next to it was Taylor’s notebook that she always had with her. The urge to know what’s inside came back.

I shouldn’t. he thought. Looked over at taylor that was still sleeping. He should have gone back to her and sleep. He should have never gotten up from the bed. He glanced at the desk, stroked the notebook with his finger, opening it only for a second before letting it close again. He shook his head. “no” he whispered. Then looked at the white folder. Was he in there too? He had just seen everything most personal to her, he was allowed to take a peak at piece of paper, right? Especially if that piece of paper was about him.

He sat on her chair, stared at the notebook and the folder. He bit on his lips. Expecting her to wake up anytime now and yell at him for even thinking about it but she never woke up and he felt like he had too. He looked at the notebook first, her notes were so confusing, her handwriting so messy he could barely get anything out of it. He went back to the first page; her name was written on the label. Her full name.

Taylor J. Wilock.

“TJ Wilock” that’s what Bellingham called her “She was on the under 8 team in Birmingham city. Lost touch after she was picked out by Chelsea.” Kylian’s wheels started turning “Yeah, she was the best they had in woman’s team. Almost joined national as well-“ he closed his eyes.

“He was a great a player…life happened and he had to let go of the sport.” those were her words when she was asked about JW playing.

Kylian could feel his stomach twisting. He looked at the folder next to him, opened it without thinking twice, meanwhile he thought about the things Jude had told him.

“She had an accident on the field. A heart attack— she stopped playing after it. She was diagnosed with a heart condition. It was a shame, they loved her.” Jude’s voice echoed in his mind.

Then Taylor’s voice: “He had to find a different way to get involved”

“You’ve made me watch it repeatedly for your stupid articles” that was Trish. “Have to say she is very unfair with you.”

He searched for his report, it was a bad one. Talking about how he needed a break immediately, he was threat for the team. It was brutal. He scoffed. Her writing on the report- he recognized it all too well. Same expressions, same stats.

“The golden boy” how many times had she called him that? The same nickname was on one of JW’s articles. The same use of vocabulary.

He remembered the first day he saw her, how she jumped in the conversation, introducing herself. “I’m the assistant.” She said to him. But she never looked just like as an assistant.

“You were right”

“About what?”

“Me.”

That’s what she said to him. He remembered the day that happened, same day Neymar was sad about his article. He wanted to throw up. Wake her up and fight. But she was never straightforward with him so why would he be with her? He sat up, rubbing his face. Sweating.

“Who is she?” he asked Marquinhos. And perhaps a part of him already knew by then but just wouldn’t process it until now. And now it hurt more than it would have hurt in any other day, any other time. Cause there was only one answer to his question.

She was JW.

BUAHAHAHAHAHA A SUPRISE CHAPTER???? enjoy the chaos. Don't know when I'll update again, have fun i guess🥲😂 I'm genuinely enjoying this. Because i know exactly what's gonna happen and you don't 👀👀 can't wait for everyone that read the first part to wake up. Chapter 7 is gonna be FUNNNNNNNN. I'm gonna go die in my bed now. Wake up in a week.

Sandman au/ Morpheus or morph that's how most call him he's a bat demon he's there to give the children good dreams and comfort them protect them he lives in his smol dimension in the middle his tree where he lives in with Noah, his brother fushigi, ivy, and hoshiko / personality : he's sweet, caring, comforting his presence his inviting like a soft bed like you're getting tired and all yk but he can also be chaotic he loves to be crazy with his friends and do random funny stuff he's also very adventurous he loves to take a look around at places he wanders around alot of aus when he has time to he's interested in other aus that aren't dangerous or anything he loves to hang out and all so you might find him sitting near where you living at watching the stars!

Monsterbed au / crow is there to protect the children he will be under the bed or in the closet well most likely under the bed he doesn't like the closet very much / he can only speak in chirps outside his au when he's back in his he will speak normally / his au is a dreamcore au / personality : is still in work I didn't quite explored his personality yet but I would say for now that he's sweet and protective of his loved ones

SH wally ( I call him that now idk I feel like it's better then father wally) actually idk if I keep that name if you might have better names let me know I suck at them XD / anyway he's there to take in children in need let's say morph finds a child that has abuse going one or something else like it lost its parents ect morph will ask that child if it wants to come with him he doesn't force them but he if a child declines he will still look to take action and get them to a better place then in the human realm if a child says yes morph will take them to sh wallys realm and leave them there for sh wally to take care of them once they grew up they can decide if they want to leave back to the human realm or stay with wally/personality : not developed yet but he's very calm and patient that's all I can say!

Ugly duckling wally aka Noah he's morphs adoptive son/ personality : sweet, playfully, joyfully,

Hoshiko/wish wally he's also morphs adoptive son / he travels trough different aus grading wishes depending if a person deserves the wish he can see it in thair hearts if a person deserves it or not / he floats mostly in the air but obv he can also swim in water /personality : still in development but I would say he's quiet energetic, has lots of energy, he does like to mess around with someone, he's playfully and teasing,

The world of Fairyverse is set in medieval-esque times.

The Firstborn fairies are those who came before all, and they rule their own respective seasons within the Island of the Fairies.

They are – Dream, the firstborn fairy of summer. Nightmare, the firstborn fairy of autumn. Error, the firstborn fairy of winter. And Ink, the firstborn fairy of spring.

Coming after the Firstborn are the season fairies. They are born in the image of their respective firstborn, bearing characteristics not only from them but also from their hopes and dreams. They are their loyal followers. They are all Sans variants.

They are – The summer fairies, the autumn fairies, the winter fairies, and the spring fairies.

Also known as – The butterfly fairies, the mystical fairies, the moth fairies, and the dragonfly fairies.

The Firstborn and their season fairies reside on the western side of Fairy Island, but they are not the only fairy types that exist here. There are also – Monster fairies (Papyrus variants, Toriel variants, Undyne variants, Temmie variants, etc…), and Human fairies/Fae (resembling humans, often with blackened or iridescent eyes, brought to life by Ink and a human woman.)

There is also the Big Folk that has settled down on most of the eastern side of Fairy Island. These are regular humans and monsters who travelled over the waters to find new and peaceful lands to live on. A few of them hunt fairies (specifically season fairies) for their wings, blood, and bodies. The Big Folk that lives close to the Great Forest (Ink’s domain) are often victims of spring fairy bites, and while they believe these bites cause them to go temporarily insane, they are, in fact, filled with extra magic that makes them able to hear the trees talk, see the bees dance, and feel the winds collect their individual stories.

Other creatures that live on Fairy Island include – The small people/monsters (the same size as fairies but lack any sort of wings. They usually live in hollowed-out trees with tiny doors and windows), the mushroom people (born from residual magic dropped by the fairies, they wander along the forest floor on stumpy legs. They make soft squeaks, but no one knows if they are intelligent or not. Often used as pets by fairies), gnomes (the same size as fairies and wear tall, pointy hats of either red, blue, or green that cover their eyes. They live underground and are only active during winter), stonemen (resembling boulders and mountains, these are gentle giants that often remain asleep for most of their lives. They are immortal unless anyone chips them away), trolls (vicious and dangerous, they live in caves and underground shelters during the day and come out at night to hunt whatever they can lay their hands on, including fairies and Big Folk alike), and finally, the elusive flower people (little is known about them. They live on the Isle of Luna, south-east of Fairy Island.)

VnC 58: the case study of astolfo

After a whole year of suspense, the Case Study of Vanitas is back with a bang and so is this tumblr blog. Time isn’t real, so let’s pretend that this analysis came out when I wrote it after reading chapter 58 rather than the day before chapter 59. Let’s go!

As always, although it’s been a while, this post will contain massive spoilers for VnC 58 and is intended for those who have read up to this point in the manga!

Chapter 58 begins with (an absolutely stunning shot of Vanitas’s tarte tatin) a quick recap of the plot so far and where the main cast is at the moment— Domi and Jeanne tragically finish their conversation offscreen; Domi and Noé have an adorable reunion; and Jeanne leaves the hotel alone, likely to report on her successful mission to a worried Luca. Jeanne looks adorably carefree as she heads out and I pray for a flashback to her conversation with Domi in the near future.

Moving rapidly along, we cut to the Archiviste Noé caught a glimpse of last chapter, traveling through the border between worlds. We learn that she’s familiar with Comte and likely Luna as well, and she and Comte sit down to have a very Pandora Hearts flavored tea break. Comte says that mystery Archiviste hasn’t travelled to the human world in ages, making it very unlikely that she was there explicitly to see Noé, although it’s possible she was (like Comte) waiting in the shadows to intervene if the fair fight reached a certain point.

Mystarchiviste in turn reveals that Comte’s existence is “unstable”. The only context we really have for that term is Vani and Misha, artificial followers of the blue moon lying somewhere between human and vampire… Comte certainly acts like a vampire, but maybe he’s actually something much more in between? My half-theory half-headcanon is that his obsession with Luna stems partially from feeling commonality with another being who doesn’t understand their own existence…

Speaking of Luna, Comte taking their form has interesting lore implications (can he take the form of anyone he’s met, or is there another requirement that has to be met first?) and also interesting fanfic implications but let’s move rapidly onwards to the real meat of chapter 58.

the chasseurs are insane

A majority of VnC 58 takes place in an extended flashback, as Astolfo reflects on his past. This flashback confirms a lot of what past chapters have implied about Astolfo— he was consumed by self hatred and guilt following the vampire attack, to the point of attempting suicide. The whole flashback could easily read as yet another parallel to Vanitas, who, after finding himself as the sole survivor a second time in a row, turned to a path he knew would culminate in his own death.

We meet two fun new characters during this section of the chapter— a guy wearing an earring (I was half-wondering if this was a younger version of Olivier’s assistant, but their eyebrows and earrings are different, so he’s probably one of Gano’s homeboys) and Charles.

Earring guy is suspicious. He might have some sort of plot relevant past (cough cough, No. 7- [i am escorted off the stage]), he might be an average chasseur with a vampire related incident in his history, or he might just be your standard issue psychopath. My favorite Mochijun Flavored Detail this chapter is the panel where, under the guise of breaking up Mira and Gano’s brawl, he moves to block Olivier’s line of sight and path to Astolfo. It’s just so Mochijun and i missed her so much—-

Charles is neato, but he sort of has this vibe where he’s not meant to be the star of the panels he’s in. It’s like Astolfo isn’t fully looking at him. Even though Charles is trying to inspire faith in Astolfo here, the only light Astolfo sees is Roland. In his double-page introductory panel Charles is exclusively lit by light coming in through the door as Roland opens it. Roland, meanwhile, looks like a savior, the light behind him blinding, and Astolfo bursts into tears when he sees him. I’m so excited to watch their relationship collapse as this flashback continues..!

Through Charles’s conversation with Astolfo, we learn a very interesting piece of lore: when a vampire bites someone they aren’t injecting an aphrodisiac or poison with their fangs— they’re actively rewriting their world formula, and sometimes these effects are permanent. I feel like I should’ve been able to riddle this out, given the whole mark of the blue moon thing, but the fact that this happens so frequently throughout the series, and that Jeanne has rewritten Vanitas, is feckin shocking and feels like it has some very interesting implications for the series. Perhaps Archivistes are unique in that, rather than rewriting with their bite, they read what’s already there.

I honestly don’t have many other thoughts on Charles. He gets carried around and nobody’s allowed see him, possibly implying that he’s become sicker/ his existence has gotten more unstable ;) since he originally became a paladin. Maybe he’s the head honcho Roland and Olivier are working against, maybe he’s actually dead by the time we hit the main plotline. At this point, it feels like he could move in any direction.

interpretation, extrapolation, being wrong, that’s the mochijuncycle

Vampires rewrite the world formula when they bite others, often leading to devastating and permanent consequences for those they’ve bitten. Misha and Vanitas aren’t the only two unstable beings in existence— while we’ve never heard of VnC vampires turning humans with their bite, maybe once a human has been rewritten enough times they too become unstable. Maybe Comte, in constantly changing his name and shape, has been rewriting himself to the point of instability. Maybe Noé struggles to rewrite because, as an Archiviste, he was born to simply read and record.

But you probably shouldn’t trust me on any of this because, as always, this is 100% my biased initial interpretation of Chapter 58! I hope you’re all as hyped to see this flashback play out as I am, and I’ll see you (hopefully somewhat) soon for VnC 59!
