LIFESTYLE POLICE REPORT: Online Controversy erupts as one Pinay TikToker 'Lumpia Queen' deep-fries traditional Filipino dessert, sparking massive outrage among Netizens and Food Enthusiasts
Tumblr media
SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA -- In the vast and disgustingly vibrant realm of social media, particularly on the platform TikTok (owned by ByteDance Limited), a whirlwind of controversy has erupted surrounding a renowned pinay food content creator, who goes by the moniker 'Lumpia Queen' -- none other than the talented Ms. Abigail F. Marquez, hailing from the picturesque region of Santa Rosa City, Laguna in CALABARZON. Ms. Marquez has garnered significant fame for her innovative and boundary-pushing approach to Filipino cuisine.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, a recent video shared on her TikTok profile (@abigailfmarquez) on Thursday [December 7th, 2023], unexpectedly thrust her into the spotlight, albeit for less favorable reasons.
In this particular TikTok video, Ms. Marquez unveiled a rather audacious recipe by deep-frying the cherished Filipino dessert 'Maja Blanca'. This peculiar culinary endeavor sparked a myriad of emotions among online viewers, evoking a mixture of curiosity, surprise and even disdain, igniting a wave of criticism from netizens and Filipino food enthusiasts alike. What unfolded in this viral video was Ms. Marquez's bold departure from the traditional and authentic methods of preparing Maja Blanca, as she chose to subject this revered dessert to the sizzling depths of hot oil below the cooked pans.
Tumblr media
At first glance, the traditional Maja Blanca, a coconut milk-based delicacy renowned for its velvety and luscious texture, holds a special place in Filipino culinary heritage. Often served during joyful festivities across the archipelago, this dessert's origins can be traced back to Spain, making it a cherished part of its Filipino culinary heritage.
Tumblr media
Ms. Marquez legally presented a contentious video on TikTok demonstrating a detailed process for deep-frying 'Maja Blanca', deviating from its traditional and authentic methods of preparation. But this audacious act of subjecting this classic Filipino dessert to the scorching depths of hot oil has set ablaze a massive outcry from those who perceived it as a grievous act of disrespect, potentially eroding the cultural essence inherent in Filipino desserts.
Ms. Marquez's affiliation with NYMA (Now You Must Aspire), a talent management agency under the esteemed Kroma Entertainment, has further intensified the scrutiny. Backed by the illustrious Globe Telecom group, Kroma Entertainment stands as a pioneering tradigital entertainment company, shaping the landscape of digital content creation.
Adding fuel to the already blazing fire, Ms. Marquez's affiliation with NYMA (Now You Must Aspire), a talent management agency operating under the umbrella of Kroma Entertainment (the company behind PIE or Pinoy Interactive Entertainment, BEAM or Broadcast Enterprises and Affiliated Media Inc. and ABS-CBN Corporation), further intensified the scrutiny surrounding her actions. Kroma Entertainment, a tradigital entertainment company backed by the esteemed Globe Telecom group, which have yet to expire the contract by the new year of 2024, is at the forefront of shaping the digital content creation landscape.
Public backlash against Ms. Marquez has been swift and relentless, with a barrage of negative comments inundating her social media accounts including TikTok alone. Filipino critics argue that her actions not only display a lack of reverence toward Filipino culinary heritage but also tarnishes traditional recipes in a manner that is deemed shameful by many.
In response to the mounting controversy… NYMA, Kroma Entertainment and TikTok Philippines have chosen to maintain a deafening silence, a decision that has only fueled further criticism from those who firmly believe that influencers bear a significant responsibility for their impact on cultural representation. Various online platforms and forums have emerged outside of TikTok, fostering discussions where users vehemently express their displeasure, accusing Ms. Marquez of perpetuating a disturbing trend of inappropriate alterations to beloved Filipino dishes. This incident serves as a blatant reminder that the freelanced online influencers bear the responsibility of preserving the integrity of cultural heritage while pursuing internet stardom of the Filipino.
Tumblr media
Now, the fate of the Lumpia Queen's reputation hangs precariously in the balance, as the online community eagerly awaits her response to the overwhelming backlash threatening to overshadow her culinary endeavors.

You Should Have... -P.G
this is the request from @helanahaadock, here you go hun! Also thanks to @dessxoxsworld for clearing the request out for me!
Tumblr media
Summary: Pablo's confused when you tell him something...
"You should have been nicer today, Pablo" Those words of you made him abruptly lift his head from the pillow and look at you confused
"What?" He mumbled but you didn't replied
He looked at you as you closed your eyes pretending to be asleep, confusion settled all over his face and his brain racked a movie from today's happenings.
You have had a lovely, passionate and sweaty morning time together in the bedsheets, then he went to train but in the middle of it he received a call from you, in love with the sunflowers he had sent you out of nowhere, he had come home after his training and helped you around the house tidying it up a bit when you were still at work, when you came home he had settled up a nice bath for you which at the end he joined because you requested it and talked a bit of your days, few gossips here and there and overall just nice, then he pleaded you to let him do your after shower routine which consisted of taking care of your body with oils and body creams and after you ordered in some chinese food and settled up the TV for FRIENDS, you cuddled until it was time to sleep.
He didn't understanded it. In which way wasn't he nice to you?
He was overthinking it, sleep was the last thing on his mind now as he sat up confused replaying over and over again today's events.
Maybe he went too harsh on you in the morning? You would have told him. The sunflower bouquet was too small for your liking? He knew you liked small gestures and not very expensive ones. Did he missed an important date? No, that couldn't be. He always settled up a reminder of everything in his phone in case he could forget about something but he never did.
Were you expecting for something to happen during the bath? You haven't had problems before letting him know that and he never minded unless it was great with you. Did he massaged you too hard while applying the creams? He followed your instructions and after that he made sure to help you dress into your pijamas and gave you some loving before dressing himself. Were you mad he didn't give you his hot sauced chicken? He gave you two pieces of it and the whole package of lumpia. He didn't get it.
He had also replied to your texts today and he didn't get it. He never said something wrong in them. He sighed looking at you sleeping peacefully as he was sat up at 12:50am racking his brain over and over and over again.
It didn't made sense to him, what the hell were you talking about? In his mind he had done nothing wrong.
And he truly hadn't.
He had treated you like a full on queen that day and you knew it. He always has treated you like one, but you decided to trick him into this little prank you've seen in TikTok, to see what his reaction would be.
And until now, it was fascinating you. He had gone like this fifteen minutes.
You didn't had to open your eyes to imagine the fact that he was with his arms crossed, his bottom lip in between his teeth, the sighs he continuously let escape, each one louder than the last one, his frown deeper and you could also imagine the gears of his brain turning and blowing some smoke from the hard work.
You wanted to laugh but kept on with your act
"¿Qué carajos hice mal?" (What the fuck did I do wrong?) You heard him murmur, your heart broked a little and you moved around, pretending to shift your sleeping position
"Amor" You said dragging your words "Why you up? What's up?" He was so concentrated in your words from a while ago that he didn't noticed that your voice wasn't raspy as it always was from whenever you woke up from a nap or your sleep time.
He looked at you as you sat up, one of your hands grabbing his as the other supported your whole weight, he was quiet for a few minutes before he decided to speak up
"Did I do something wrong?" He finally asked as you shook your head
"Why you said that?"
"You just told me I should've been nicer" You acted like you didn't know
"What are you talking about? Amor, you're sleepy"
"I'm everything but sleepy, Y/N" He said laughing in disbelief "Can you please tell me what I did wrong?"
"I don't know what you are talking about, Pablo" You said
"You just told me 'You should have been nicer today, Pablo' and I want to know what I did wrong so I can fix it. I have been replaying today in my mind for the hundredth time and I don't know what I did!" He exclaimed "But I want to fix it!" He said shaking his head "You have obviously thought of something to say that, please, tell m-" You started laughing "What are you laughing about? It's not funny"
"It kinda is"
"It isn't, Y/N. I wanna know what I did to make my girlfriend sa-"
"It is funny because it's a prank" His expression fell and you could see his soul coming back to his body
"La que te parió" You laugh at his reaction "It truly isn't funny" You laugh throwing yourself at him as he groaned "Ugh, no. Pensé que algo había pasado, no me iba a dormir hasta no saber que era. ¡Hasta quería despertarte!" (I thought something had happened, I wasn't going to fall asleep without knowing it. I even wanted to wake you up!)
"Es que nunca estuve dormida" (I was never asleep)
"Joder, Y/N/N" You laugh kissing his cheek "Me has dado el susto de la vida, the sleep flew out of my body when I heard those words" (You have given me the scare of my life)
"I'm sorry" You kissed his jaw this time still laughing "Wanted to see your reaction from it!" You watched how his tongue met the inside of his cheek
"Yes, now that you saw it. You're gonna pay for it, amor" He said before trapping you in between his arms and the bed as you squealed from the surprise and soon let yourself go in your boyfriends arms and touches.

COVER REVEAL
We are excited to reveal the cover for DOPPEL BANGER by Sarah Robinson releasing 10/15!
#PreOrderHere: https://booksbysarahrobinson.com/books/doppel-banger/
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Firefighter by day, drag queen by night.
This one of a kind standalone romantic comedy in the Queerly Devoted series by Sarah Robinson is a boundary pushing bisexual romance as firefighter Mike Dougherty—stage name Madame Michelle in drag—meets Isa Reyes, a Filipina crisis management professional who has no interest in adding any more drama to her life.
Isa Reyes is five foot two and exists solely on her father’s lumpia and her mother’s cynicism to fuel her sixty hour work weeks in crisis management. When she’s not working behind the scenes on the latest political scandal, hostile corporate takeover, or bailing a client out of jail, Isa finds herself sitting on the sidelines of her best friends’ lives. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Isa is tired of watching life pass her by and is determined to find the perfect alpha male to ride off into the sunset with.
In walks the alpha male of all alpha males—Michael Dougherty, lieutenant firefighter at DC Fire & EMS and Mr. July in the charity firefighter calendar, and her new point of contact for her contract. It’s her job to fix the department’s reputation and he’s there to give her everything she needs…in more ways than just professional. But there’s a lot more to Mike than meets the eye and when she runs into him on stage in a very different context, she realizes that everything she thought she wanted in a man might be in question.
Battling the expectations of her family, the professionalism of her job, her lifetime living on the sidelines, and the pull of her heart, Isa navigates her own stereotypes as she takes a leap onto center stage.

6 for the writer asks! 💚
What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year?
sdjfksjdhfs 🙈 typical me, I have more than one favorite, lol
Tumblr media
from Adventures in Babysitting:
Several minutes of coaxing proved fruitless, and Colt’s patience was beginning to wear thin, when he remembered something. “Jordan, gimme a K-I-S-S,” he whispered, jutting his chin towards a small ceramic bowl on the counter.
“Um, okay,” she replied, leaning towards Colt.
“No, no,” he grinned. “I meant the uh, C-A-N-D-Y kind in the bowl over there…but I’ll take the first kind another time.”
from Kairos:
“It doesn’t even matter,” she whispered quietly. She tilted her head to the ceiling and blinked away more tears. “In another life I could have fallen in love with you.”
Liam brushed away the tears that had fallen to Elia’s jawline, gently tilting her chin down to look into her eyes. “I could fall in love with you in this life,” he revealed, shedding a tear of his own when he saw the joy in her eyes.
basically all of Under Duress where Katrina and Liam argue, but this part in particular:
Katrina rolled her eyes. “And it’s certainly not like the move they pulled during the baby shower, with Bread-for-Legs trying to talk me into a deal right before—”
Liam abruptly rose to his feet. “Listen here, Katrina Julienne, you will let me speak!” He raised his voice sternly, drawing up his full height while she remained seated on the couch. Katrina’s eyes followed as he stood. “I am the King of Cordonia, and while you are my queen consort and the woman I love, I am the only one in this room with royal blood coursing through their veins. I am the one with centuries of power bred into their DNA, born from a line of kings and queens blessed by deities as old as the earth itself! You will listen when I speak! Your blood pressure was dangerously high, you needed medical attention, and I did what I had to to get you the help you needed! It was either make a promise to Auvernal, or risk losing my wife and child, and I wasn’t about to put your lives at risk!”
“THERE HE IS!” Katrina shouted back, haughty smile across her pale, dry lips. She waved her hands pointedly at him. “About fucking time, King Liam!” The King and Queen stared at each other, breathing hard from their outburst, daring the other to speak first.
but I think the bit of dialogue that makes me laugh the most is from the lumpia rolling scene in @callmeellabella‘s birthday fic, Extra Rice & Alibis 🤣🤣🤣:
“Wow, you really gotta stuff more than I thought in there.”
“No, that’s too much, Liam,” Donna warned. “If you force that much in one go it’ll burst.”
Maxwell’s eyes bulged and he clamped his hand to his mouth with more force. He wondered if it was actually possible for things to burst, as the woman had warned.
“Wait, start over again,” Anya pleaded. “Why is his so skinny? I’m so used to working with thick ones.”
Drake and Liam stopped what they were doing and laughed nervously at each other. Anya was thankful she was still wearing a mask around them during the ten day quarantine window; her cheeks burned bright red under the fabric covering her face. Drake tried to even out the line of raw meat on the wrapper in front of him, and he tugged on the tissue thin wrapper to encase the filling.
“Don’t stretch it too much or she’ll tear!” Donna exclaimed, lightly rapping the back of Drake’s hand with her fingers.
*****
definitely one of those, 😂 thanks for the ask @alyssalauren
End of the year fic asks

All About the Letter K
Please List! (at least one) Animals I Like: Kangaroos! Heard they can give vicious kicks, which sounds badass. Foods I Like: Kimchi, katsudon, kare-kare. Asiatown up in here lol. I Know Someone Who’s (jobs): Kitchen crew, but that’s in the past. That’s what my dad started as. I Wouldn’t Mind Visiting: Kazakhstan, Kenya; and to go back to Kyushu, Japan. Sometimes I Feel: Kooky, especially if I’m with people I’m comfortable around.
Music I Listen To: Khalid, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West. I also listened to a lot of Killswitch Engage as a teenager. Movies I’ve Seen: Kill Bill, The Karate Kid, both original and remake, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.   Names I Like: Kendra, Kiara, Kiana. And now, onto the random questions! 1. Kiwi: the fruit or the bird - which would you prefer? I don’t think I’ve ever seen the bird but I’ll still have to go with it because I don’t like fruits and probably won’t like kiwis either haha. 2, Kangaroos or koalas - which are cuter? Koalas. I’m pretty sure kangaroos can be dangerous. 3. Have you ever flown a kite before? What did your kite look like? Yeah but just for science class over a decade ago. I didn’t really care for the activity much since it wasn’t my idea of fun. Don’t remember what my kite looked like anymore. 4. Kayaking, kickball, karate, or kickboxing? Kayaking sounds like the best and most relaxing thing to do, though kickboxing is also fun to watch and karate seems interesting to learn. 5. Would you rather be a king or a knight? Why? I’d much rather be a queen honestly haha but between these two I’d be a king because...more perks, I guess? 6. Is ketchup one of your favorite condiments? What do you put it on? Not really. I kinda dislike ketchup actually; I find it sour and I don’t put it anywhere near my fries. I’m willing to consume banana ketchup though – here, we usually pair it with fried chicken, eggs, or lumpia. 7. Do you own any khaki clothing? I have one pair of khaki pants that go down just up to my knees. 8. Do you own a knife? (not like, a kitchen one) I do not. 9. Do you think that kittens are adorable? They are. 10. Do you own/use a tea kettle? Nope. In our old house my grandma used to use one, but we don’t have one at present because no one would be using it anyway. 11. Kettle corn or kettle chips? Not really familiar with what these are but I’ll go with chips hahaha. 12. Computer keyboard or music keyboard - which do you prefer, and why? Computer, definitely. I genuinely like working on the computer even if it means typing my fingers off; it’s why I liked my primary task throughout my internship which was to be on Google Sheets all day :) I’ve no musical talent whatsoever, so I’d be awful with any music keyboard. 13. Would you ever kill someone to protect yourself or a loved one? To protect a loved one, yes. I honestly don’t know if I’m willing to do much to protect myself. 14. How many people have you kissed? Just one. 15. Are you into anything kinky? A little bit, but it’s just for me. I’ve never told Gab about it. 16. Are you a klutz? I can definitely trip over air, yup. 17. How many keys are on your keyring? Just two - the one for my car and the other for the front door. 18. Do you own any keychains, and can you describe them? I used to have a rainbow Mickey Mouse keychain and a UPD keychain. I’ve since lost them since my keyring isn’t good at holding keychains up apparently. 19. Do you know how to play a kazoo? No, I don’t. I don’t think I’ve even seen one of those in real life. 20. Do you remember Kipper the dog? Never heard of him. 21. Do you know anyone who wears a kilt? Other than Roddy Piper, no. 22. Do you have a first aid kit? We were required to have our own ‘Go Bags’ in high school which was basically a first aid kit since that was around the time that rumors about ‘The Big One’ were going wild. But when I graduated high school I left my Go Bag behind in the classroom and I never came back for it lmao. 23. Are you a kind person? It’s always my first move with everyone, unless I’m dealing with someone who I know has done a bad thing like hurting a loved one. 24. Have you ever sung karaoke before? Yeah, very rarely. Not my thing. 25. Do you spend a lot of time in the kitchen? Not at all. [a-zebra-is-a-striped-horse]

Thank you for the lovely ask! It was so much fun to write. But now I'm dying to know: how did you incorporate your Filipino culture into Rhian (or any of your OCs)? I know you've said here and there, but I would love to hear more about any and all of your Bioware OCs!
I have a lot hcs about this that I always forget on the spot so I’m sure I’ll forget something lol.  So, like you most of my OCs before were white because u know how that internalized racism is. I think Rhian might actually be the first brown OC I’ve ever had tbh (which is uhhh kinda sucky since I only started playing DA like 2 years ago).
I’m putting this under a read more lol.
For Rhian, she wasn’t really filipino at first. Just ambiguously brown until I realized I can just make her filipino. Her parents were Seheron elves (not directly from Seheron just ethnically Seheron if that makes sense) who ended up working as servants in Castle Cousland. While she was growing up, her parents would try to speak and teach her Seheron as much as they could. Sometimes if her mom or dad had some free time and enough money, they’d go to the market and get ingredients (or stuff close enough) for making Seheron food and cook for her. She kinda lost most of the Seheron they taught to her because she got separated from them at a young age and grew up in the Circle. I highly doubt that they teach apprentices how to speak seheron. After Awakening, she travels all over Thedas to learn more about the dalish and elf history as well as seheron culture in order to get more in touch with her roots. I kind of modeled that after me trying to make up for all the years I internalized that hate haha. I almost forgot. In Rhian’s Queen!AU, she wears a maria clara gown at her wedding to Alistair. On causal days, she wears a baro’t saya and for more formal events she opts for a filpiniana. She also eventually gets her first tattoo from a seheron tattoo’er. Haven’t decided what it says yet though.
For Alden and Kaia, one big thing I included was that every satinalia, their family puts up a parol. Instead of the image at the center being something religous, it’s the Amell crest. (I didn’t think having Andraste on it would make a lot of sense because Satinalia isn’t about her). Funny thing though, I hc that Leandra tried to make Seheron food for them (bc the Amells are seheron obvs), but she can’t cook and also I doubt that Lothering has the necessary ingredients so Kaia, Alden, Bethany, and Carver all grew up thinking they hated Seheron food. They found out that it was just their mom’s bad cooking when Fenris made them Seheron food that was actually cooked properly. Another thing I hc is that when Leandra ran away with Malcolm, she stole the family tabo. That added to the animosity her family already felt towards her. And when Alden gets married to Fenris, they both wear barongs.
In Lu’s case, the Lavellan Clan is Seheron Dalish. They mostly used to stay in Seheron but had to leave because the fight between the Qunari and Tevinter made it too dangerous. A lot of the food I hc them to have is inspired by Filipino cuisine. For example, one of their desserts is bibingka. They also try to make use of all the parts of animal they hunt so a snack they’d have is isaw and many other filipino street foods. One of Lu’s favorites is turon and lumpia. I have a hc where she brings lumpia and banana ketchup (it might sound gross but trust me its not) with her to one of the war table meetings. Cullen tries one and thinks that the banana ketchup is too spicy lol. Lu is trilingual and can speak common, Elvhen, and Seheron. She also has a Seheron accent when she speaks common or elvhen. Another thing they do is that in addition to calling the keeper “Keeper”, they also call them “Lacan”. Lu also has her name tattoo’d in baybayin.
Bolin is half Antivan and half Seheron. His mom taught him some seheron but he’s not really fluent though he knows some words and can pretty much follow conversations. His parents also fight over what food they’re gonna have for dinner: antivan or seheron. They usually have a competition over who has better food. Bolin doesn’t mind because it means he gets to eat more.
I’m just going to talk about Neneng because I barely played ME:A to develop Bahaghari enough.
Everything about Neneng is Filipino because Mass Effect takes place in our universe. She was born and raised in the Philippines. Her nickname is very filipino. She has a long name that has nothing to do with her nickname. The first time Neneng met Kaidan’s mom, she did the “mano po”. When Neneng was growing up, she sold sampaguita garlands on the street. The whole of the Philippines stans her because she’s a successful filipino. She’s the whole package.
And in general, everyone’s names are filipino inspired (except Kaia and Bolin but all you filipinos out there know that filipino parents would def use these names for their kids).

Ot[her]
A young Filipina mestiza searches for her racial identity among the women of color whom she admires.
 I.                              CHARACTER STUDIES
Lola: an old woman, with silver-grey curls that hint black at the ends like youth that hangs on by its joy. She wears soft pinks and floral patterned dresses, worn slippers, and a large watch that fits her wrist almost as well as the veins that surround it. Lola has a thick Filipino accent, points with her lips, and reads her bible every night. Her glasses are large round frames, and she always wears diamond earrings and a string of pearls around her neck.
Mama: almost a carbon copy of Lola, but middle aged—fewer grey hairs and longer curls tied loosely back, square glasses and a focused brow. She is quiet and gentle but intimidating, though barely over five feet. She wears t-shirts and cargo pants and sneakers, but her hands are the same as Lola’s—the markings, the mannerisms, the creases in her palm all exact. After act one, she wears a necklace made of the same diamonds from Lola’s earrings, and she plays with it when she answers difficult questions.
Celine: the smallest version of the two women above—she is barely seven years old, with bigger, rounder eyes and bouncing pigtails but straighter hair. She is fidgety and curious, with a book and sometimes a stuffed animal in hand. Her clothes are a little too big (just enough that she can grow into them).
 II.                           ACT ONE
SCENE ONE
A bedroom—a queen size bed in a bedframe that lifts it about three feet from the floor. A bedside table holds a lamp and next to it, a large bookshelf. It is morning; light streams in through the window and Mama sits in the bed, eyes closed and whispering her morning prayers.
Celine shuffles in, dragging a stuffed animal (a puppy) behind her. She stops at the bookshelf to pick out a copy of ‘Little Women,’ then takes a running start to jump onto the bed beside Mama. Mama quietly finishes her prayers.
MAMA: (whispers) Amen. (Then, louder) Good morning, cookie. (Sees book) Is it story time? ‘Little Women’ again? We just finished it!
CELINE: I want to read the part about their papa coming home!
MAMA: Okay, little one. What do you say?
CELINE: Please, mama?
MAMA: (Nods, then begins to read the story—in the book, the girls’ father comes home from the
war and they gather around the fire to greet him. Celine interrupts her.)
CELINE: It’s like when papa comes home from work at night!
MAMA: Yes, he’s always happy to see you. But he’s never gone long.
CELINE: Mama?
MAMA: Yes?
CELINE: (Eyes wide) How come people look at papa funny when he holds my hand to cross the street?
MAMA: (Pauses) Oh honey. You and your brother have my eyes and hair, dark brown like mine. Your papa has blue eyes and he was blonde when he was your age. A long time ago, people would have looked at me funny too, for holding your papa’s hand.
CELINE: Mama?
MAMA: Yes, honey.
CELINE: How come we don’t look like papa? Is it because we come from your tummy?
MAMA: (Laughs) No, love. You get some things from your father and some from me. Your eyes may be brown like mine but they’re bigger than mine, better to see with, and you have his creative mind and his compassion. That’s why you paint watercolors together outside on the weekends.
CELINE: Mama?
MAMA: (Patiently) Yes, dear.
CELINE: What’s compassion?
MAMA: Caring about someone a great deal. The way he cares about you.
CELINE: (Sits up) I care about him, too! And I love the crepes he makes in the morning. It means I get to have chocolate for breakfast.
MAMA: (Smiles) I know you do. Let’s go say good morning and get you some breakfast.
 SCENE TWO
Lights turn out in the bedroom and on in the kitchen, where Celine (older now, about thirteen) steps in to find Lola setting the table slowly, in her slippers. There is a large pot on the stove, filled with champorado, or Filipino chocolate rice porridge.
LOLA: Good morning, ang ganda ko. Did you sleep well?
CELINE: I did, but I smelled champorado and I had to get up.
LOLA: (Smiles) Your favorite.
CELINE: You remembered!
Lola begins to serve the champorado, putting a generous scoop in each bowl. Celine sits down eagerly to eat, and Lola stands while she drinks hot tea from a mug that reads “World’s Best Nurse.”
CELINE: Is this why you put chocolate chips in when I make you oatmeal? So that it tastes like champorado?
LOLA: (Nods) Next time I will teach you how to make it this way. It’s easy. Just rice instead of oats.
CELINE: Really?
LOLA: My lola taught me when I was your age. I was like you.
CELINE: (Eyes wide again) What were you like when you were my age?
LOLA: I didn’t have as many questions.
CELINE: What are the Philippines like? Why did you leave?
LOLA: Hot. Lots of mosquitos. My family was there, but there was a better life here for me and your lolo. And for your mama, and you too. So we left.
CELINE: I remember. You were a nurse and he was a sailor?
LOLA: Yes. In the Navy. (She says Navy with a Filipino accent, so that it sounds more like ‘Naby.’ Celine takes note.)
CELINE: Lola?
LOLA: Yes, ang ganda ko.
CELINE: How come you didn’t teach my mama how to speak Tagalog? Or my uncles or my aunties?
LOLA: It helped them fit in—they were American kids who speak English without accents. It
was easier for them.
CELINE: Will you teach me some?
LOLA: You already know some.
CELINE: Do I? LOLA: (Kisses Celine on the top of her head) Ang ganda ko—my beautiful.
CELINE: (Looks up at Lola) I guess I do.
LOLA: And all the foods I cook. You know those.
CELINE: Oh, of course. Adobo, pancit, lumpia…
LOLA: That’s your kuyas favorite.
CELINE: Is that Tagalog, too? Kuya?
LOLA: (Nods) Kuya for brother, ate for sister.
CELINE: But Lola, I want to speak to you in Tagalog.
LOLA: I can speak English just fine. You and I will communicate best that way.
CELINE: But—
LOLA: Finish your breakfast, naman.
CELINE: (Looks down) Yes, Lola.
 SCENE THREE
Lights come up briefly on the bedroom, which is now a hospital room with an IV tube. They come back down and lights in the kitchen come on—Mama and Celine (now 18)—sit in the kitchen, drinking tea. They look tired—it is late, the light in the kitchen is no longer natural light, but dim and fluorescent.
CELINE: I miss her. It’s weird.
MAMA: I know, honey. I miss her too.
She plays with her necklace, absently.
CELINE: I don’t think it’s fully sunken in yet.
MAMA: Me either. But I’m here, if you need me. If you need to talk.
CELINE: Me too, mama.
MAMA: I’m not sure I have anything to say yet.
CELINE: It’s okay.
There is a brief silence.
CELINE: Who’s going to cook at holidays now?
MAMA: We’ll figure something out.
Lights dim further in the room and Celine addresses the audience from a spotlight.
CELINE: We haven’t quite figured it out yet. The pancit tastes almost the same as it used to, but nobody can julienne the vegetables quite the way Lola did. When she was in the hospital, everyone brought Filipino food for two weeks while we slept there, waiting. It was sweet, it was meant to be sweet.
She fiddles with her necklace.
But none of the food tasted like hers, and it sent me into this spiral of fear that I hadn’t learned enough about her culture. That I didn’t know enough about who I was, that I didn’t know how to respect those who came before me and the sacrifices they made. I didn’t have the trials they did—I took the privilege of my white side when it was convenient and I was a minority when the oppressors were convicted. I’m learning that I cannot just choose to be a woman of color when I want to, but I’m also learning that my own culture narrative is eating champorado in an American kitchen. The same kitchen I ate crepes in when I was seven, and the same kitchen I cook in with my mestizo cousins every Christmas. I cannot claim to be one or the other, but I must also take responsibility for both. I carry Lola’s accent with me. When I find myself passing through barriers she couldn’t, it helps me to remember what burdens she bore for my privilege. And I think of her every time I put chocolate in my American oatmeal.
Shuffles out of kitchen in worn slippers. Lights go out.

Mary Murray was the daughter of the world renowned chef, Beth Murray. She was the sole heir to her mother’s only but personally-managed 5-star restaurant in Willow Creek. The Beth’s Italian cuisine has garnered impeccable commentaries and feedback from restaurant critics time and time again. Beth’s dream of delivering a humbling and homey food experience has given patrons and tourists a taste of passion for the culinary arts. At a young age, Mary had immediately adopted this; their love for food was contagious, perhaps hereditary.
Born in the Philippines, Mary and Beth moved to Oasis Springs after they have saved enough for life abroad. However, ambitious Beth did not stop dreaming. She wanted more than having peaceful weekends during the peak of her life. She challenged the norms of the culinary culture being a Filipino cook taking on the meticulous and ancient dishes created in Italy. Her love for pasta growing up and her great appreciation for European flavors inspired her to do beyond than just enjoying these experiences by herself. She decided to use herself as an aficionado of these cuisines to honorably deliver them to the public with her passion and skills.
Beth’s Italian Cuisine started small. She served spaghetti and gnocchi to locals using her very own recipes. People around town talked about her small setup that only sold take-outs by that time. Word of mouth spread to nearby towns and cities, making her spaghetti and gnocchi sensational in a short while. With the money she earned, she rented a spot in Willow Creek and built a restaurant with help from a few other sponsors as well. Because of her inherent love for food, and her humble attitude towards success, her restaurant bloomed beautifully by the time she reached 50. In only a few years, so much less than how she expected it would take, Beth made her dreams happen and they were celebrated by patrons through her own cooking.
Mary witnessed her mother’s grit and enthusiasm to build her empire in her later years in life. She recalled that when she was a kid, her mom would cook so much for their family in the Philippines. She’d cook lumpia, pansit, spaghetti and fried chicken even with the smallest of celebrations. Mary could attest to her mother’s love of food. Her kitchen sang the most beautiful of songs, and smelled like an orchestra of flavors. Mary was there to dance through it all those times, learning and tasting her way through her mother’s cooking. Her love for food may be not as much as her mother’s but her own passion for cooking bloomed under her mother’s abundant sunshine.
Like her mother, Mary had the heart to share happiness with people. She loved seeing joy, smiles and hearing laughter everyday. Her relatives and even her mom nudged her to get married and start a family, but Mary never found the man to start it with. In that case, at 45, Mary adopted a bright and talented young Hillary from the Goodwil Orphanage. Hillary was 6 and she sang the best notes Mary has ever heard. Mary also fell in love with Hillary’s confidence and pride, attributes she highly respected and wished she could have. She saw so much potential in 6-year old Hillary and she believed that she could nurture this further inasmuch as her mother nurtured her.
With Hillary in the house, the entire villa was heaven for the senses. Peaceful mornings, raw beautiful voice, the smell of bacon and the taste of hot cocoa made everyday perfect and complete to the Murray household. Climbing higher and higher through the mountains of life just showed Mary and Beth more of the horizon they’ve always dreamed of seeing. In the Philippines, life was simple and reached its peak everyday just to decline by nighttime. In Oasis Springs, life continued further for the both of them, getting over small peaks each day, only to resume the climb the next day for more altitude and ambition. Mary walked behind her mother’s trail, witnessing a lot more than her mother had. She had visions not to start her own journey, but to maintain a legacy she believed could continue forever.
Later years of Beth’s life came and so she grew frailer, and less capable of running the entire restaurant by herself. Mary was able to expand the restaurant through time by adding more dishes, training more staff, but her mother weakened faster than she should have. At 70, Beth could barely go to the restaurant herself so she had to stay home and rest. The responsibility all fell on Mary’s shoulder. Walking behind her mother was easy, but to continue the path, she felt lost. At first, Mary frantically doubted her capabilities, losing track of how she and Beth started all of this. Beth’s Italian Cuisine was built on love for food, a humble dream Mary and Beth celebrated in their small kitchen before. Mary forgot that for a short while. Perhaps maybe because she missed her mom’s flavors in cooking. At home, her mother still cooked every meal and with each one were memories of her excitement at the start of each day, seeing patrons enjoy their food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The next time Mary went back to the restaurant to open it for another day, Mary reminded herself of her mother’s visions and aspirations. She rooted her perspective on these and extended her grasp of the present. Plates ran in and out of the kitchen. Patrons chattered and laughed through the day. Their food still made people happy and Mary wanted to hold onto that. She wanted to own her spot as the heir of their humble empire, and so she did. That day, Mary personally tended to each table with more confidence than she had the days before. Mary loved what she saw that day, what came to her senses, and what reminded her of her dreams. She then dreamed to be able to continue this for as long as she lives, extending her branches for as far as they could reach.
Unfortunately, Beth died a couple of years after. Mary and Hillary were left behind to run the restaurant themselves, but it was okay. Mary owned and earned her spot as the daughter of the renowned self-taught chef, Beth Murray. That was honorable for any woman to have, and even to be able to uphold that standard had to be recognized in the culinary world. Mary’s contributions to maintain a highly regarded restaurant took interest from the queen herself after Beth died. She and her mother earned honorary accolades and crowns from the queen, establishing their roles and recognition worldwide.
Mary continues to run the restaurant at age 66 while Hillary is taking up History in college and plans to be an actress in the future. Hillary’s dream challenges the legacy of Beth’s Italian Cuisine but Mary doesn’t think that it should. Besides, Beth’s Italian Cuisine was her and her mother’s dream, not Hillary’s. More so, Mary emphasized that she adopted Hillary to share the happiness she had experienced growing up. Knowing that Hillary has learned her worth enough to forge her own dreams, Mary was certain the legacy of good parenting and womanhood continues through her, by her mother, and onto her daughter, Hillary.

At marami pang iba.
