HI HI HI HELLO I have a THING! That I want to show y'all! HEHEHEHEHEHE I have another rant!! I shall hide it behind the read more thing but yeah!!! Hehe rant!!

(Also! Legal disclaimer! [Not really but same vibe.] This rant is about a super fancy snazzy spiffy science thing [CRISPR] but I'm not a science professional! I'm just doing a school project on this! This is what I got from YouTube videos and websites and such, yeah? If I get things wrong, that's why!)

Hi hi hi so you came to see my rant huh? Huh huh huh? Well I shall show you hehehe!

Have you heard of a thing called CRISPR? I'm gonna assume that you haven't so that I can explain!! It's a gene editing tool that uses a protein called Cas9, which is commonly found in bacteria! You see, bacteria have been using this fancy thing all along for ages! Like whenever bacteria get attacked by a virus (which happens a lot) and that virus is new to it, it doesn't really have a fancy defense mechanism to protect itself. But if it survives the attack, then it takes a bit of the virus's DNA and saves it in a section of its own DNA using Cas9. And then if it gets attacked by that virus again, it'll check the virus's DNA against the samples it has in storage, recognize the DNA, and make pieces of RNA to attack the virus right at its DNA!

Cool, huh? Well scientists found about this lil whizzy thing called Cas9 a while ago and were pretty excited, for good reason. With CRISPR, we can not only edit the DNA of creatures that haven't been born yet but also creatures that are very well and living which can pave the way to treatments for genetic diseases!! Plus it's much cheaper than it cost to do genetic stuff the old way!!! (As in, some folks are trying to get laypeople to try out CRISPR on themselves, and their main struggle is with convincing people to do it cause the cost isn't that big of a factor!) We already have GMOs like the Flavr Savr tomato (which takes longer to rot on store shelves thanks to being genetically modified). If CRISPR is safe (which folks are still trying to work on since there's still so much about genetics that scientists don't know and messing with folks' genomes can lead to unintended consequences [also fun fact: the word consequences is used colloquially to mean a bad effect of something, but in stuff like psychology, it just means an effect of something!!]), then it can be super awesome!

I learned about this lil thing back in... I think 2018? I watched a Kurzgesagt video on it a few years ago at least, and I rediscovered the vid during the pandemic while everyone and everything was shut down and there wasn't much to do during the summer other than sit on the couch and watch TV. And like, I LOVED that video when I first watched it?? I watched it multiple times and I even forced (read: persuaded/begged) my parents to watch it too. And I still love hearing about CRISPR and genetic engineering and genetics in general now because of that (and it's impressed at least two important people in my life so I consider it a success!). Like when we touched briefly on CRISPR in my biology class last year, I was SUPER excited in the back of the classroom because it was CRISPR!! One of my childhood interests that has significantly influenced my life!!

So when we had to do a project on new science in my physics class this year (for... reasons), I immediately looked up new stuff going on with CRISPR within the last couple years. AND TURNS OUT! FOLKS HAVE MADE A CRISPR 3.0 NOW! Like I didn't even get to hear about CRISPR 2.0, it was just straight to CRISPR 3.0!! And hopefully CRISPR 3.0 is safer, more effective, and easier to use than the original version of CRISPR.

ALSO! CRISPR IS BEING TRIED OUT TO HELP FAMILIAL HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA(high cholesterol risk passed down genetically)!! THAT'S SO COOL!!! AND IT'S BEING TESTED ON PEOPLE NOW! I will literally SCREAM this is so cool!!

So yes! I'm having a fun time, hehe. And I'm writing this instead of actually working on my project, but that's cause it's helping me put together my thoughts! Totally not because I'm just too excited to work on it without being able to gush to someone about it (/sarcasm), lol.

I don’t mean about personal stuff. That’s whatever. He can deal with that on his own time, or not because he has the emotional coping mechanisms of a concussed brick, but that’s not my point. My point is: everything sucks.

The solar system Red worked so hard on is absolutely trashed. Half the factions are here just to fight the other half while Guardians do the rounds for loot. There’s not one but TWO enormous derelict alien warships lying around illegally-parked. The Moon’s fucking haunted! Two moons and a planet are gone! Some anime-ass megamind cosplayer keeps swanning around like they can’t even be bothered to kill us! And his stuff! It’s morning noon and night people trying to use his stuff to do something awful! You can be angry, you can fight back, without invoking the war-for-war’s-sake that Xivu represents. You can defend yourself without becoming violence incarnate. Guardians have to learn to walk that line now or we’re all royally screwed anyway. We have to learn to use it as a tool, same as Stasis, without being consumed by it.

So let him get mad. Let him get furious, at high velocity. Let him address a spread of caedometric ordnance “To Whom It May Concern.” Let us see the anger of a gentle machine. Let the solar system remember who was here first.

ONE - A home isn’t always the house we live in

TK leans over, arms clasped in front of him, and says to the floor, “He’s scared, and I don’t know what to tell him to make it better.”

He finds he doesn’t like Carlos’ parents very much right now, which maybe isn’t fair, but he doesn’t know them, and he does know Carlos.  Still, that’s not what TK’s asking.  “Sometimes people don’t need you to fix things, they just need to tell you so that they know someone heard.”  

TWO - a phoenix first must burn

Gabriel nods and pours himself a cup too and tries to decide if this is a good time to try and ask TK what he’s too chicken to ask Carlos.   “Do you want to touch Carlos?”  And then winces, because there had to be a better way to ask that.

TK’s spoon stops halfway to his mouth, and he looks abruptly more awake.  “Umm, what?”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.”

TK mutters something that he suspects translates to ‘oh, thank god’, and drops his spoon back in the bowl and pulls the coffee closer.  “So, if you didn’t mean what it sounded like, what did you mean?”

THREE - stitched with its color

TK won’t meet his eyes, “They shut down parts of New York on 9/11, even if Mom hadn’t been in Manhattan for a meeting that morning she might not have been able to get to me.”  Carlos takes a sharp breath, and TK looks over at him, and his voice is thick, “I need to make sure he won’t be alone.”

“TK,” Carlos starts, not sure what he can say to reassure him.

TK gives him an unhappy look, “The problem with the unthinkable happening is that afterwards it’s not unthinkable anymore.  I’m not blaming Mom and Dad, nobody could have known that something like 9/11 would happen. But, I do know.  I have to plan for it.”

FOUR - through sames of am through haves of give

He knocks lightly on the door before he pushes it open, not sure what he’s going to find on the other side.  TK had been light on details when he’d called, and the whole way over Enzo held on to TK’s promise that he’s fine as a bulwark against panic.  TK had said there was nothing for him to worry about, but it’s hard to forget the last time he was in a hospital room with TK.

FIVE - 5 Conversations Andrea Reyes had in her kitchen (+ 1 she didn’t)

“Every time I try to sleep I think I smell smoke, and every time I close my eyes I think I hear the fire.”  Carlos confesses.  He looks down at their hands, and says very quietly, “I’m scared if I go to sleep that I won’t hear it, won’t smell it, that we’ll be trapped again.”   Her heart breaks a little at how young he looks, with his messy curls and flannel pajama pants.  

TK lets out a low breath, ‘Oh, sweetheart.”

SIX - Your nemeses will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing (Gabriel)

He waves awkwardly at the car, "I could still take you home, we could have dinner maybe?"

Carlos sighs, "Dad, I'm tired; I just want to take a shower and go to bed."

"We can call for something.  Please, mijo, just let me take you home."  He swallows, "I don't want to leave like this.  Please?"

SEVEN - Two paper airplanes flying

“No, it’s worse,” Carlos snaps.  “TK didn’t ask to get shot, or get hypothermia.  You’re doing this deliberately, because what, being a firefighter is the only thing that gets you up in the morning?”

“You love being a cop, right?”  Paul’s getting angry now, and Carlos knows that this is when he’d usually try to calm things down, but realizes he’s angry too.  He nods tightly in agreement.  Paul gestures sharply, as if this makes his point for him, “Right, so tomorrow someone tells you you have to quit, you’d be okay with that?”

EIGHT - Close your eyes, fall in love, stay there

Mack’s looking at him now, lips pursed, “I get that I’m not your forever guy.”  He waves away Carlos’s protest.  “I”m not.  And, that’s fine.  I’ve never kidded myself that I was.  But, Carlos, what are you going to do when you do meet your forever guy?  Are you going to hide him away, go to your parents every other week like a good son and pretend like you don’t have an entire life and family they don’t know about?”

NINE - And our rafters of fir

He tilts his head to look at TK, "I'm going to worry, it kind of comes with the territory.”  He doesn’t say that ever since the fire it feels like all his worry is dialed to 11.

TEN - A Conversation in Eight Acts (+ an encore)

Carlos looks down at the boxes, trying to estimate how much longer it’ll take them to finish unpacking and gets distracted by a trophy poking out of the top of one of them.  He pulls it out and examines the plaque.  “TK, is this a mathlete trophy?”

TK spins fast, blushing, and Carlos dances back, holding it out of reach, reading.  “Is this a first place trophy?  Did you go to State?”  He glances around at the still packed boxes, “Do you have a varsity Mathlete jacket somewhere in here that I can wear?”

Typing quirks can be anything!

They aren't always replacing letters in certain ways. They can be anything related to replacing letters, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, spacing, etc.! They can be subtle, or super obvious, and anythin' that you might not even realize could be a typing quirk can be one!

And most importantly: They're all valid! However you type, there's nothing wrong with it, and nothing wrong with you.
