Dracula revival clashing with my Discworld brainrot is really making me revisit the sadly off-screen adventure where a recent graduate on a truly horrible ivy league frat boy eurotrip comprised entirely of assasins and an ancient evil entity help each other become the girlboss of their dreams and then stay lifelong penpals

vetinari: we can't afford an army of mercenaries because the city is bankrupt. downey: what do you mean it's bankrupt? don't we pay our taxes? vetinari: as a matter of fact, you do not. this may be why we're bankrupt in the first place.

After rescuing the dog that would become Wuffles, still a misbegotten puppy, Vetinari brought it to the Guild in order to ascertain its age and what was needed to ensure survival. Which meant knocking on Downey’s office door, interrupting him whilst he was grading, and holding the dog aloft: What is this? A dog, Vetinari. I’m busy. Vetinari entered, shutting the door with his foot and set the dog on Downey’s desk. Since he was simply a teacher at the time, a mere Dr. Downey, no lord, no anything else, the office he was afforded could be more aptly described as a hatbox. The desk took up most of the space and Downey had it covered in papers and books and days old cups with remnants of coffee or tea or some mix of both. The window was open and a bowl serving as an ashtray perched on the sill. I am aware. I would like to know what kind of dog it is. If you say ‘small’ I shall be unpleasant. Downey sighed. Picked the little thing up and turned it about, this way and that, the puppy squirmed as he did and Vetinari briefly worried he might hurt the creature before reminding himself that Downey loves dogs more than anything on the Disc. Downey loves dogs more than he loves Downey, which says a lot for Downey loves himself a great deal. Mutt, Downey said, he’s a mutt. Terrier mostly, though. Six or seven weeks old, a little young to be taken from the litter. Where’d you find him? In a bag. Part of someone’s poor life choice. Downey handed the dog back over. He should be easy to keep, provided he’s reasonably trained. Low maintenance, so far as dogs go. At least from what I can tell. You’ll have a better sense of size and temperament once he’s a little older. A pause as Downey ruffled up a spare bit of paper and scrawled notes on how the care for the animal. He included a list of reference books. Vetinari thought that an unexpected act of kindness. Or, perhaps, it is merely that Downey knew Vetinari and knew that he liked to read up on a subject as much as was reasonably possible. Wrapping the dog in a scarf, Vetinari thanked Downey for his invaluable time. Downey provided a withering expression in return. Vetinari departed.
they've been married for decades and they don't even know it. Idiots.

‘Surely a little bit of conquest would be in order?’ ‘An empirette, perhaps?’ said Vetinari sourly. ‘We use our slaves to create more slaves? But do we want to face the whole world in arms? For that is what we would do, at the finish. The best that we could hope for is that some of us would survive. The worst is that we would triumph. Triumph and rot. That is the lesson of history, Lord Downey. Are we not rich enough?’

Writing Vetinari and Downey like "No, I obviously fucking hate you, inviting you over for a drink doesn't mean anything."
"Of course this a ploy to psych you out, its not like I want to have dinner with you."
"I don't care about your well-being at all, but considering the amount you've had to drink, there does happen to be a bed made up if you want it..."

The Vetinari Hogswatch shipping forecast day 2- Lord Downey / Lord Vetinari
Tumblr media
Enemies to lovers but add in a load of childhood rivalry and teenage hormones into the mix, then leave to marinate for 30 years of civil service and professional rivalry. Stir and serve hot, but do be careful to run it past a food-taster first.

Character ask: Downey of course
(poison murder man our beloved)
Poison murder inhumation man our beloved
First impression: Oh, he is going to be a problem and a pain in the arse. As if this series didn't have enough of snobbish pricks
Impression now: He is one of the five people in the series who actually does his job and I respect him so much for it.
Favorite moment: When Vimes breaks his nose in Feet of Clay. A few books later Vimes throws an orange at Inigo Skimmer, also trained as an assassin, who doesn't dodge, catch or deflect it, because it isn't dangerous.
Idea for a story: TBH not like I have a coherent idea, but I want a story where he is in his element and for once given free rein to do what he has or wants to. Preferably right next to Vimes who is trying to be White Saviour and Good Cop Detective and failing to help the situation by it at all. Meanwhile Downey speaks four languages in five minutes, wears the shiniest black and disappears in an empty well-lit room at midday and ssets off a long Rube-Goldberg machine that ends up in one unconsequential death and crisis averted, and Vetinari later notes, not even to him, that it was a lucky coincidence that it happened.
Unpopular opinion: He is actually smart. Not genius, not brilliant. But smart. Extreme street-smarts on him.
Favorite relationship: whatever he is having going on with vetinari, I take that in almost all flavours. As an old Homestuck, I do love me some pitched spades.
Favorite headcanon: His doctoral thesis was on the usage of arsenic in candles as a method of inhumation, and he reported that thesis as stolen a month to the Watch or so before the events of Feet of Clay. That theft was dismissed and forgotten. Afterwards he didn't give Vetinari an earful and not even a weary sigh, but it was really, really obvious that he wanted to.

1, 3 and 7 with Discworld?
Hahah that's so vague! So I'm going for overarching stuff, as much as possible. Rather than character specific.
1. Canon I outright reject
Moist von Lipwig is not tall. I refuse to accept that. He should be average in all things: facial features, coluring, height. Deeply, deeply average. Mediocre, even. Nothing to write home about. You wouldn't notice him.
Because that's the point.
Oh - I refuse to accept that the merchant's guild was a relatively new creation (as per the timeline of the series). Ankh-Morpork is a fundamentally mercantile society - it makes no sense for it to be so recent an establishment.
Therefore, I reject TP's world building on that front because it doesn't fit the world itself.
3. Obscure headcanon
Not sure if it's truely obcure, but obviously I head canon Madam as Vetinari's mother rather than aunt. They just fudged things to ensure in the eyes of Polite Society he had ""Proper Parentage"" and wasn't the offspring of a sex worker and one of her favoured johns.
7. Age/height/weight headcanon
I'm not sure! Most people fit with their descriptions pretty well so I've not augmented much in my headcanons. I've just drawn things perhaps a little firmer?
I know fandom prettifies people, so I tend to try and make sure Vetinari isn't described as this handsome man but rather weird looking and Beauty is Very Much In the Eye of the Beholder with him.
I also like characters to have a bit of weight on them. Downey is in his fifties - people put weight on with age, for the most part. He's not going to be a svelte twenty year old. Same for Vetinari - he's in his fifties and he's less mobile than previously due to the gunshot wound. He's going to be carrying more weight in the paunch than when he was young. Ditto for Vimes and Boggis and Sybil and all others of a Certain Age.
I just like these people to have aging, changing bodies. It's important that their skin hangs a little loose, that there are squishy bits that weren't like that when they were twenty-five or thirty, that there's weight on hips/thighs/stomach/arms, that there are wrinkles and lines and skin pores and random black hairs that show up overnight and all that stuff that is part of the beauty and grace of aging.

Thank you! <3 <3 <3 <3
