The Gaang as MASKS Playbooks
(Because I am nothing if not a creator of niche content when I actually make stuff.)
This is for the Alternate Universe where they’re all superheroes because I love both MASKS and Avatar and I have opinions that I’m going to share. There’s at least two potential playbooks for each character because there’s a lot of possibilities and different playbooks can focus on different aspects of the characters. Plus, more option is always good.
Anyway, without further ado (under the cut because this got long, I have a lot of thoughts on this matter apparently) the Gaang as MASKS playbooks:
Aang
The Legacy - This is the one that makes the most sense to me and the one that I feel most reflects Aang’s core internal conflict in the show. The legacy is all about bearing the weight of previous generations and their accomplishments and actions. Aang is just the latest in a long line of heroes known as The Avatar who can wield all four elements. For the portion of the playbook that’s about interacting with previous members of the legacy, you could either go with him talking with the past lives like we see in the show or, alternatively, the past couple Avatars could still be alive and kicking. Either way, they’re still watching what he’s doing and trying to push him in what they think is the right direction.
The Nova - This one fits a little less but could still work. The Nova playbooks’ about having a huge amount of power that you can’t necessarily control. For the most part in the show, we don’t see Aang worrying about not being able to control his bending, but this playbook would play more into his fear of losing control in the Avatar state and his worries about hurting someone with firebending.
The Outsider - Okay, this one is a bit of a stretch since the playbooks’ weighted in favor of the hero being an alien or from another dimension. But! I feel like you could definitely hack the playbook to accommodate Aang just being from a hundred years in the past as well if you want to play with that aspect of canon Aang. This playbook would definitely lean more into the whole ‘a lot has changed in a hundred years’ thing. (The Innocent playbook is explicitly from the past, however, it also has a future, supervillain version of yourself running around which, while could be cool for Aang, also deviates a lot from canon
Katara
I’m going to be honest, Katara was the hardest one for me to come up with. None of the MASKS playbooks’ particular flavors of teenage angst really jive with Katara’s drive and passion to help people and make the world better after it hurt her. I’m going to toss out a few options here, but if anyone else has any better ideas here, feel free to add on.
The Legacy - Katara as this playbook would really play into her status as the last Southern Waterbender. It’d take tweaking of the playbook but you could shift it so it’s about this legacy of heroes and more about the legacy of her culture. So it’s less about the outward pressure to uphold the legacy and more about the inward pressure from herself to uphold it.
The Protege - The Protoge playbook has a specific mentor who’s trying to shape the hero into their vision of how a hero should be. Using this playbook, you could definitely really examine her relationship with Pakku or Hama. However, it’d definitely be exploring more of a niche of Katara than her overall character.
The Soldier - Once again, this recommendation is based less on canon and more on stories that would be potentially interesting to tell. The Soldier playbook focuses on the relationship between a hero and the larger organization that they’re a part of (the generic on the game gives is a SHEILD equivalent). I could see Katara being a passionate member of a similar organization (possibly one White Lotus themed since this is the Avatar version of MASKS) and trying to change the world through that. I feel like this is one where Katara’s character could definitely shine, however, it’s definitely a setup that doesn’t have a lot of basis in canon so if you were wanting to play Avatar more straight in MASKS it wouldn’t work as well.
Sokka
The Beacon  - Sokka is a textbook beacon. The beacon is a low-powered hero who’s in the heroing business because it’s fun and exciting and a lot of their angst draws from the fact that they aren’t really sure if they belong in a world of superpowered individuals. Sokka’s got his boomerang, he’s got his sword, and he’s got his tactical mind. All of his friends are like crazy powerful. He’s the Beacon.
The Joined - The joined is a playbook that shares a lot of the material of another playbook; the two characters have a close relationship. Now, I’m not saying that Sokka’s just playing second fiddle to Katara. What I am saying is that it was Katara’s idea to become a superhero in the first place and she dragged him along with her into it. Did Sokka want to be a hero? No, he want to stay home and focus on taking care of his family. He didn’t want to be the Painted Dude or whatever Katara said his hero name should be. But does his sister listen to him? No.
Suki
I, unfortunately, have less to say about Suki. We should’ve gotten more of her in the show, that’s what I’m going to chalk it up to.
The Protege - Okay. I will admit, this one is purely what I think would be cool and isn’t actually based in canon. But imagine: Suki as the protoge of Avatar Kyoshi who’s still alive, still kick ass, and still very opinionated. Can’t you see the glory? The potential?
The Soldier - This playbook would probably reflect her most accurately. She’s a member of the Kyoshi Warriors first and foremost in the show and her interactions with the Gaang are always affected by that. In a superhero setting, I could definitely see her and the other Kyoshi warriors being some sort of superhero squad that works throught the SHEILD equivalent
Toph
The Janus - The Janus is the spiderman playbook. You’ve got a mundane life, you’ve got a secret identity, and you’ve got to balance them. Toph is rich heiress of the Bei Fong family by day, and notorious vigilante The Blind Bandit by night. This is the perfect playbook to explore the dual life Toph led before she straight up joined the game. Her parents are super annoying, her life’s a drag, at least as a hero she can be free and who she really is.
The Delinquent - The Delinquent is, in essence, a rebel. Try and tell me that that’s not Toph ‘Let’s break some rules!’ Bei Fong. I mean, just look at some of those playbook moves: Troublemaker, I don’t care what you think!, Team? What Team?, Mary Contrary. Those are such Toph moves.
Zuko
Okay, Zuko has a lot of possibilities. I’m going to blame it on the sheer amount of angst that boy has packed into him.
The Soldier - Okay. I know that I’m using the soldier a lot (it’s because they’re all child soldiers) but hear me out. This would be Zuko if you wanted to play with him going through his redemption. In this case, the Fire Nation wouldn’t super obviously supervillains. They’d probably be some sort of organization that looks outwardly good but is secretly fishy. Ozai’s at the top and of course Zuko’s loyal to them. They’re the good guys. (They aren’t.) The soldier isn’t specifically about breaking away from your organization but it definitely can be.
The Reformed - This playbook fits post redemption Zuko like a glove. The Reformed playbook is one where you were specifically a supervillain previously. You’ve done villainous things, but now you’re a good guy and it’s complicated. I don’t think I really need to explain why this playbook is Zuko. It just is.
The Janus - This is for all of you Blue Spirit!Zuko needs. Look, his life sucks, his Dad’s a jerk. There’s way too much expected of him. At least he can put on this Blue Spirit mask and go out and do vigilante stuff.
The Scion - I’m going to be honest, I’m not super familiar with this playbook but I feel like I have to mention it because it’s about being the child of a supervillain. So I’m tossing it out there. Other people who actually know about this playbook can talk about whether or not it actually fits Zuko.
Bonus:
Mai - The Beacon. She’s the least enthusiastic Beacon you’ll ever meet, but look at her and tell me that she’s not in this because being a hero is the most interesting thing that’s ever happened to her. Her life was so boring before Ty Lee walked up to her and was like hey, let’s be vigilantes together. She’d never admit it, but she loves being a hero.
Ty Lee - The Star. The Star playbook is all about being flamboyant, showy, a celebrity. Being a hero is what separates her from her sisters and she’s going to milk it up. She’s still non-powered for the first part, only having her martial arts and auras, but she knows how to play it up. She definitely has a huge social media following.
Finally, The Outsider playbook could work for any of the characters if you just want to play it straight as a character from the Avatar universe getting dragged into this alternate world of superheroes.
Feel free to discuss and share any ideas you have!

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Big Bang Theory (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Sheldon Cooper/Penny Characters: Sheldon Cooper, Penny (Big Bang Theory), Leonard Hofstadter, Amy Farrah Fowler, Bernadette Rostenkowski, Howard Wolowitz Additional Tags: penny being pregnant is utter bullshat, so here is my answer to that Summary:
The baby isn't Leonard's.
While the light is still red, Sheldon leans in and kisses Penny gently. She feels an interesting sensation in her belly as his lips meet with hers, and she is hopeful that there will be a lot more kisses like that in her future.
For Sheldon's fortieth birthday, he and Amy throw a huge party and invite everyone they know. With their Nobel Prize money, they have cash to spend on this affair, which they host at a luxurious mid-century modern beach house in Los Angeles (obviously this was all Amy's idea and Sheldon reluctantly went along with it). Raj mans the grill, providing hot dogs and hamburgers, and there is plenty of alcohol available to enjoy as well--Penny makes sure of that, although she does not imbibe herself--for obvious reasons.
"Are you having fun, Mama?" Bernadette asks Penny, after doing three tequila shots in a row with Amy while Penny watches with increasing jealousy.
"Of course! I love seeing my friends getting drunk and then almost drowning in the pool," Penny says, and Bernie laughs too loudly.
"I'll toast to that!" Amy says, doing one more shot than Penny would have advised.
Kripke and Bert are in the corner of the pool arguing about the season finale of Game of Thrones, and Leonard and Wolowitz are watching some Youtube video of the latest particle physics discovery on the patio, preferring to stay in the shade until absolutely necessary.
Penny is sitting by the side of the pool, surveying the action, happy for her friends and the fun they're having. She is also trying not to think about ruining most of their lives with one small sentence, which will have to be done sooner rather than later.
Sheldon extracts himself from Amy for a few minutes and comes over to sit by Penny. They both put their legs in the water. Penny briefly touches Sheldon's toe with hers, which makes him twitch a little. Penny laughs. She knows how much he hates other people's feet.
"Happy birthday, sweetie. I hope you're having fun."
"It's not the worst party I've ever been to," Sheldon admits. "Although I'd much rather be eating Thai food at home while watching--"
"The new Spiderman Blu-Ray, we all know, babe," Penny says. She loves her weirdo friend.
"Yes, that's correct." Sheldon takes a sip of the spiked lemonade Wolowitz made. Penny does enjoy a semi-drunk Sheldon. That's how they got into this mess in the first place.
"So I suppose you haven't told Leonard yet," Sheldon says, looking across the pool at Leonard, who is now eating a hot dog while playing volleyball with Howard. Penny has never been less attracted to him.
"Oh, yeah, I told him last night and he took it really well. He can't wait to raise your baby and co-parent with you and Amy. He's over the moon."
"Sarcasm?" Sheldon asks.
"Yes, Sheldon. Obviously I haven't told him yet. I wanted to wait until after this party. He's so happy right now--he thinks he's going to be a daddy and he never stops talking about it. This baby was going to give him the chance to raise a child the direct opposite of how his mother raised him."
"Why would he want to do that? Beverly is a perfect mother," Sheldon says, and Penny ignores him.
"Anyway. I'll tell him tomorrow night. Are you ready to stick with the plan? I'm not putting my ass on the line if you're going to chicken out."
For a brief moment, Sheldon puts his arm around Penny and she rests her head on his shoulder. This public display of affection is not a good idea, but nobody is watching them, and Penny can always explain that Sheldon was expressing his newfound happiness for her pregnancy if anyone asks.
"I'm ready. Amy thinks I'm going to a conference in Colorado next week and that's why I've been packing in advance."
Penny nods. "Good. But... you don't have to do this, you know. I realize this isn't how you imagined your life turning out. I can deal with it on my own."
"Of course I know that, Penny. And yes, this is not optimal. I made a vow to Amy and I planned to uphold it for as long as I lived, but things change. Now that I've won the Nobel, I find that I am amenable to other possible outcomes. You are carrying my child, and I am committed to you and the baby. We can make this work."
Penny smiles. "We can. I know we can. Have you figured out how you're going to explain this to your mother yet?"
"No. I can't even picture how she's going to react. There's no telling what Jesus is going to think of my actions but I'm sure I'll find out soon." Sheldon sighs and Penny feels the familiar ache of how their lives are going to change so drastically and how many people it's going to affect. "I have to return to Amy now. You are going to tell him tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," Penny promises, dreading every single second leading up to her telling Leonard that she is actually having Sheldon's baby.
"Then I'll be ready tomorrow," Sheldon says, giving her a quick peck on the cheek. He takes his shiny alabaster legs out of the pool and walks away to find his wife. Penny watches him closely. Although she occasionally had feelings for Sheldon in the last 12 years since they've first met, of course she didn't think they'd end up together. But it feels... kind of right? She doesn't love him, exactly. Not yet. She's hoping that will come after all the guilt from cheating on Leonard with his best friend, and taking her best friend's husband from her, has dissipated somewhat. It's right there on the surface--part of her thinks she's been falling in love with him one small moment at a time for a while now--at least ever since they went shopping together and Sheldon came out looking like a snack in that black suit of his. That's when Penny realized he was way more than a socially awkward comic book nerd.
Penny gets in the pool and swims over to Leonard, who offers her half his hot dog, which she takes gratefully--she's eating for two now. Bernadette joins Howard at the volleyball net and they play together, couple against couple, not knowing that there will be one couple less in the next 24 hours or so.
24 HOURS LATER
Telling him now. Meet you outside in hour. - P
Fine. See you then. - S
It’s about 8:13 PM on a Sunday night. They just had dinner--Leonard made a lovely meal of roasted chicken and mashed potatoes, which Penny had been craving for a week. Leonard is sitting at his desk, writing a grant proposal (or something, Penny isn’t really paying attention) and listening to a TED talk. In other words, just like every other Sunday night Penny can remember in the last couple years. She has no idea what Sunday nights with Sheldon is going to entail, but she’s definitely ready to find out.
This would all be so much easier if she went with her first plan, which was to leave Leonard a note and never speak to him again. But Sheldon vehemently disagreed with that method and convinced her to tell Leonard the truth in person. Penny hopes Sheldon’s inherent goodness will rub off on her.
“Hon? I have something to tell you,” Penny says. She’s sitting in Sheldon’s spot on the couch.
“One second, let me finish this sentence…” Leonard says. Penny waits at least two minutes before Leonard turns around. “Okay! What’s up? Is the baby kicking again?”
“No, that’s not it. But it does have to do with the baby. Um, remember that night when Sheldon and I went out for some drinks and then I came home and was too drunk to, you know… do it with you?”
“Yes… of course I do. The week before is when we made that baby. And as I recall, we haven’t ‘done it’ since then.”
Penny nods. The ever-present guilt is starting to make her a little queasy. The questions she asks herself over and over, day and night, are stacking up again--how could I do this to him? He loves me so much and I cheated on him. I’m the worst wife ever. And the like. Penny has always known her morals have been questionable. In a way, she’s not even surprised this happened. Her relationship with Leonard was bound to derail eventually, just because she is the way she is. This is what she thinks in her darker moments--most of the time she’s able to at least justify it enough to make the guilt go away for a while. But that’s not happening tonight. Most likely tomorrow she'll wake up and her other dominant feeling will take over--that she deserves this baby, that her marriage has been a disaster from the beginning, that Leonard cheated on her before they even got married... you know, that kind of thing.
“Well. Sheldon and I had a good time that night. We laughed a lot. He drank more than I’ve ever seen him drink. He was telling me about winning the Nobel Prize and Amy and the problems they’re having in their marriage, and I did the same…”
Leonard looks--well, he looks a lot of things. A bit hurt, a bit confused, a bit angry. He’s going to be a lot more of those things in a few minutes.
“Why would you tell him about our issues? We barely even have any. You know I don’t want to go around telling our friends everything.”
Penny resists the urge to roll her eyes. They have plenty of issues that her pregnancy was just going to provide a band-aid for; before she got pregnant they'd fight every couple of days about both the little things and the big things. From how Penny never takes the trash out to how Leonard doesn't want Penny to audition for anything because he thought her acting days were over. They fought about that one a lot.
She doesn't argue with him on this point, though, because she's the one currently at fault here. "I know. But I was drunk, and I was in a mood. Well, something happened. Something you aren’t going to like. I made a mistake. Sheldon and I both made a mistake. When we got in the car to drive back to the apartment, we sort of… ended up in the parking lot of the Pasadena Public Library. And…” Penny doesn’t know how to finish this sentence. It’s so bad. It’s so so bad.
Leonard has started to figure out that his worst nightmare may be coming true at this exact moment. “And what? You checked out some books and went home?”
“No. It was dark and rainy and we were both drunk. One of us kissed the other. Then we got in the backseat and things… happened.”
“What are you telling me, Penny? Because surely you aren’t saying that Sheldon got you pregnant? That would be utterly ridiculous.”
Penny stares at the floor. She’s glad she already moved most of her stuff into the car so she wouldn’t have to stick around much longer. Can she leave now? Does Leonard have all the information yet?
It turns out he has a lot more to say. Penny listens to Leonard yell, and cry, and accuse, and say all the mean things she knows are true. He deserves to let it all out, she thinks. He deserves a better wife, and she deserves a better husband. They were never right for one another--just because they lived across the hall from each other doesn't mean they are soul mates. It just means they lived across the hall from each other.
While he goes on and on, Penny thinks about how she used to love Leonard at one point in her life--it seems like a long time ago, but she wasn’t always dissatisfied and bored with their marriage. She should have done something about it instead of ending up in a backseat with Sheldon, but… it happened. Things can change so quickly.
“I’m going to leave now,” Penny says when Leonard has finally run out of things to say. Leonard doesn’t argue with her. Instead, he ignores her completely, which she actually prefers. She gets her purse and a few other things from her room, and leaves the past behind.
Sheldon is waiting for her in the lobby. They hurry to her car, and once Penny has driven a mile or so, she stops at a red light. She turns to him and is surprised to see that Sheldon is smiling. Like, a real, actual, human smile.
"How did she take it?"
"Not well, I'm afraid. I believe she's writing you several angry texts or emails as we speak." Penny knows there's a lot more to the story, and that Sheldon is devastated in his own way. Amy was the first love of his life. She hates what Amy is about to go through, but there's no turning back now.
"That reminds me..." Penny says. She lowers the window and throws her phone out of it. It lands with a satisfying thud on the road.
Sheldon, without even thinking about it, does the same with his phone. Penny is shocked but delighted.
"This is the new me. The 40-year-old father of a new baby. The 40-year-old husband of Penny. The 40-year-old Nobel Prize winning scientist. I like the sound of that," Sheldon says. Penny laughs. She can fall in love with this Sheldon. This is a much different version of the 20-something she met for the first time who proudly showed her his whiteboards so long ago. This is the man she may, in fact, spend the rest of her life with--and that doesn't scare her or bore her to tears when she thinks about the prospect.
While the light is still red, Sheldon leans in and kisses Penny gently. She feels an interesting sensation in her belly as his lips meet with hers, and she is hopeful that there will be a lot more kisses like that in her future.
"Let's do this," Penny says. Sheldon nods, and as the light turns green, they drive into their future.

Writer’s Month 2019
Day 6: Word Prompt: kids
Mark loved his son. Tim was his world. Especially after all the hassle he had gone through during the adoption process; there was the question of stability around Mark’s main source of income coming from his YouTube channel and as well as how he would deal with travelling when con-time came around due to him being a single parent. But in the end, the case went through and Mark found himself with the adorable little Timothy. Tim was only four years old when he came to live with Mark and, in the two years that they had been a family, both Tim and Mark had settled into a comfortable routine.
           Each morning, Mark would wake up early and go for a run or walk with Chica before he prepped for breakfast. Mark would then wake Tim who would pad through to the kitchen, clamber up onto his seat to eat and watch cartoons on the kitchen TV as he ate his breakfast. Mark would then drop his son off at school with money for his lunch in his pocket and his little rucksack on his back before he drove home to record some videos for the day.
           On the days when recording would take longer than planned, Mark relied on one of his friends to pick Tim up. Most of Mark’s friends didn’t mind picking up the now six-year-old as Tim had a way of charming everyone he met, especially his pseudo-aunts and uncles, who all adored the little boy.
           Then when all videos had been edited and uploaded to the channel, the little family would get together and eat dinner before spending quality time together; watching a movie or playing games until it was time for bed.
           Mark would then tuck Tim in and whisper a “Sleep tight, Little Biscuit.” followed by a kiss to Tim’s hairline before Mark left the room switching off the lights as he went.
           Life was good for the Fischbach’s.
 ~💕~
 “So, did you have a good time today?” Mark asked as he entered the dining room carrying two plates of chicken with mash potatoes and mixed vegetables. He placed one plate, with a slightly smaller portion pre-cut into mouthful-size pieces, in front of his son before he settled down in his seat opposite.
           “Yeah, Daddy! It was really cool! We went to the park! But it wasn’t Kyle’s mom or dad who took us, it was his big brother, Jason! He pushed us on the swings and he spun us on the roundabout! And we went super super super fast! It was awesome! Then we played hide and seek in the trees and bushes around the park! And I won because Jason helped me climb a tree and Kyle couldn’t find me for ages!” Mark smiled as he listened to his son’s tale. He expected there might be a small bit of exaggeration concerning how long it took Kyle to find the other boy but so long as he was happy.
           “Remember to eat your dinner before it gets cold.” The adult in the room pointed out when Tim took a pause for breath.
           “Yes, Daddy!” Tim exclaimed, suddenly gathering a large amount of chicken and potato onto his fork and trying to shove it all into his mouth.
           “Not so much, Tim. Just what you can chew. You can talk after.” Tim nodded his head and began to take smaller, more appropriate bites of food. After managing to eat a few mouthfuls, Tim made a show of swallowing before taking a deep breath to start talking again.
           “Then, Jason took us to McDonald’s and I got a chicken nugget Happy Meal! And then! And then! Then we went for ice cream at Scooby Doo’s!” Mark smiled at his son, knowing that ‘Scooby Doo’s’ was Tim’s way of saying ‘Scoopy Doo’, a little cafe and ice cream shop in town that sold homemade ice cream in a wide variety of flavours from the normal and expected to those unique to the cafe.
           “That sounds like fun,” The adult remarked as Tim shovelled another forkful of food into his mouth. “Did you get your favourite?”
           “Yup! I gots a large cone and a flake!” Mark knew all about the flake, when he had picked Tim up, the boy had flecks of chocolate smeared into his t-shirt along with the large ice cream drip stains. “Then we went back to Kyle’s house and we played in his garden all afternoon! We played pirates and guarded our treasures from the evil shark that wanted to steal it! It was so much fun! We pretended that the treehouse in Kyle’s garden was our ship and Rodger was the shark!” Rodger being the other family’s pet dog; a small, excitable beagle. “And then Jason came outside and played with us in the treehouse! He was Davey Jones! And he tried sink our ship by controlling the shark! But then! We fed the shark Davey Jones’ hand like Captain Hook in Peter Pan! And we won!”
           “Well, it sounds like you had a very exciting day.” Mark smiled fondly at his son as the boy scraped the last bites of food into his mouth. Tim then carefully put his fork and knife together in the centre of his plate, copying his father’s actions. “So, I guess that means that it’s an early night for a certain little boy?”
           The look on Tim’s face evolved from a big smile to a look of horror and he suddenly yelled in protest, “But it’s movie night! We always stay up and watch movies on deh weekends!”
           “But surely you’re too tired from your long day of being a pirate?”
           “No!”
           “Alright, well how about we go and run you a bath, then once you’re in your PJs, we can put a movie in?” Tim quickly nodded and scurried from his chair as Mark stood up and carried both his plate and Tim’s plate over to the sink, to wash up as Tim took his bath.
           The running footsteps alerted Mark to Tim’s presence and when he turned around, he found his son donned in his bathrobe, hugging a clear plastic box to his chest. Mark led the way through to the bathroom, where he filled up the tub with warm water and helped Tim to get settled. He then gave Tim his bath crayons and dropped a couple of toys into the water before he said, “I’ll just be in the kitchen, so just shout if you need anything.” Tim nodded his head though he seemed to be already engrossed in creating his first piece of artwork on the tiled wall.
           For the next fifteen minutes, Mark washed up the dishes and wiped the countertops before he retreated to Tim’s bedroom to set out the boy’s pyjamas. Once Mark had completed the few tasks he needed to, he rejoined his son in the bathroom.
           Tim had been busy during the time Mark had been away. The white tiles on the walls now held a collage of colourful pictures. One was, Mark assumed, supposed to be Tim and Kyle on a pirate ship, with a strange beagle-shark hybrid cresting the spiky waves, jagged teeth gnashing. Another image, Mark guessed, was supposed to be Tim’s family; Tim in the centre with Mark next to him, and then gradually scattered all around was Mark’s close friends who had all begun to fulfill large roles in the young boy’s life. Then the other images seemed to be a collection of rainbow animals, though if you asked Mark to identify them, he certainly would have struggled to give any definite names or labels.
           “Hey, Squishy, ready to wash your hair?” Tim turned his attention away from his latest drawing, something that used a lot of green, and nodded to his dad, dropping the crayon into the plastic box. Mark reached out for the children’s shampoo and set about washing his son’s hair for him. “Ready to get out now, or do you want to play some more?” Mark asked once Tim had finished rinsing the product from his hair.
           “Play more!” Tim exclaimed, enthusiastically, suddenly thrusting a shark toy into his dad’s hands, “You’re the shark, Daddy!”
           Mark laughed, glad he was already wearing short sleeves as he plunged his hands into the water to make the shark swim. “Okay, ten more minutes then we’ll get you ready for bed before we watch a movie.” Tim nodded and grabbed the boat toy, talking as though he were the pirates aboard the boat.
 By the time the Fischbach’s were ready to settle down and put on a movie, it was almost eight thirty. Tim had been changed into his Spiderman-themed pyjamas, had brushed his teeth and was hugging his favourite teddy bear; handmade with black button eyes and a little pink moustache, dressed in a little red-and-white striped jacket. Mark had similarly changed into his pyjama pants and a comfy t-shirt and was happily curled up under a blanket with his son under one arm and Chica under the other. The movie played in the quiet of the living room, the only other sound being the rhythmic thudding of Chica’s tail as it wagged happily against the fabric of the sofa.
           It wasn’t even half an hour into the film when Tim was out cold, snoring lightly. Mark sat in place for a while, ensuring that the boy was fully asleep before he carefully untangled himself from the blanket and lifted Tim into his arms. Chica padded behind the man, happy to follow along behind as Mark made his way to Tim’s bedroom. Carefully, he balanced the small boy against his chest with one arm as he pulled back the duvet to tuck Tim in.
           Tim stirred for a moment but showed no sign of waking. Mark smiled and bent down to kiss Tim’s forehead, whispering a good night into the boy’s hair. He turned back towards the door to see Chica staring at him, head tilted to one side. She sat at the end of the bed and lightly pet at the floor with her front paws.
           “Come on, Chica, out. Maybe when he’s older.” Mark whispered, gently urging the dog out the door. “Okay, bed, Chica.” Chica seemed reluctant but eventually she padded out the door, followed by Mark after he had switched on the night light on the chest of drawers.
           Mark then walked with Chica to the sliding door leading out to the patio and back garden and let the dog outside. He flicked on the outside lights and left Chica to her business as he set to work cleaning the bathroom.
           Half an hour later found Mark locking all the doors and checking the windows. Chica was back inside and likely to be upstairs in Mark’s bedroom, curled up on the dog pillow. On his way to his bedroom, he peeked his head into Tim’s room to check on his son and smiled as he saw the small lump shuffle. Mark smiled softly, pulling the door mostly shut but leaving it slightly ajar.
           Mark brushed his teeth and did his night time routine in the en suite of the Master bedroom. Chica raised her head to look at him as he made his way over to the bed. The dog bed was positioned at the end of the double bed, pressed up right against the side. Mark pet the dog’s head lovingly as he passed, leaning down to press a quick kiss to the dog’s nose. “’Night pupper.”
           Climbing under the covers, Mark got himself comfortable before running through tomorrow’s plan. Tim was back at school. He’d gotten his homework done on the Saturday – Tim had sat with Mark as he edited some videos in the home office, working through the sheet of symmetrical shapes and looking for real-world examples - and his backpack was all ready to go by the front door. Mark had already planned out which videos he would be recording and which games he would play, he usually aimed to try and get two or three filmed, even if they weren’t all edited straight away.
           It didn’t take Mark long to fall asleep, listening to the slow huffs from Chica.

Venom-o-us: First contact
I just started reading the comics for Venom and have been falling in love, so here is something I knocked out in a few days. This originally was going to be a story with reader falling in love with Eddie as Venom, but I realized I much rather just date Vemon than Eddie or anyone else, so I cut out the middle man. Hope you enjoy!

...
Another smile, another day you avoid death.
At least that’s how it seems to go in your current workplace. Every day you deal with the people no one else wants to deal with, and act as the barrier between a possible serial killer and the other employees. You deter robbers, scare away creeps, and welcome regulars, all with the same flash of white teeth.
A receptionist.
You watch the latest potential customer smile back to you, grab a pamphlet to the business, and walk away. Soon as the door shut behind them you relaxed back into your rolling chair with a sigh, and rubbed at your sore cheeks. Yeah, okay, so maybe this isn’t what you pictured your life to be like once you moved to New York, but at least you were lucky enough to nab this job. It paid a couple bucks above minimum wage, came with the illusionary title of “Administrative Assistant,” and graciously, all of the free chocolate you cared for.
Which when it came down to it, wasn’t that much, but it was the thought that counts.
You grabbed one of the Kisses from the glass bowl next to your computer, deciding that the sugar might help your current mood. Though you still took your time with it, methodically pulling at the loose corners of the silver wrapping to release the chocolate within without tearing the foil. You freed the kiss, sat it on your tongue to melt at its on pleasure, and continued to smooth the wrinkles out of the square foil. Boredom was never in shortage at this job as well, it turns out. But better to be bored and safe than in danger and face to face with a monster.
After aliens attacked New York a few years ago things have been even more strange in the city. New types of hazardous people were showing up more often, it was like playing Freak of the Week every monday. Thankfully the chances of encountering one of the freaks yourself were incredibly small, despite being in New York.
Nobody thinks of robbing a massage therapy business. And why would they? Most customers come in for a few hours and only bring a credit card. At max you handle a few hundred cash every few days, but that gets sent away before building up enough to risk going to jail for. So you were safe, bored, and had very low risk. A dream job by anyone’s standards in New York.
“Having fun?” A voice slapped you out of your thoughts, and you quickly sat up and put your hand over the perfectly flattened square foil. You looked up to see your boss looking down at you from the other side of the counter.
“Y-yes. I mean, I already finished all of today’s paperwork.” You quickly adjust your shoulders and look at your boss, motioning to the small folder of client forms next to the computer. “I was just waiting to put them in the file cabinets until later today, when less people are likely to walk in.” You clarified quickly, trying to make sure you didn’t make your boss regret hiring you.
She eyed the folder with a slight smile, before she walked past the counter to grab her purse. “I’m out for lunch.” She said and quickly left you alone once more in reception area. Your eyes followed her out the door and past the window, and you noticed the tv across the walkway showing the news.
Another superhero fight was going on it would seem. It was hard to see with the passersby continuously blocking your view, but from what you could see you could tell Spiderman was the focus. Something blurry and green appeared every few seconds you could actually see the tv, but that only narrowed down the villians to half you knew of. If it even was one of the usuals, hell, it might be someone entirely new.
The door slammed open, causing you to jump in your seat and look to the visitor. A man with a leather jacket -never a good sign- and long black hair glanced into the business a moment before looking back and closing the door as he stepped in. You could feel your chest hammering from the bells ringing in your head, but you bit down your thoughts and stood up at the desk, placing a well practiced smile on your face.
“Hello, how can I help you?” You risked a looking towards the computer, not seeing any new clients for at least the next half hour. The man walked further into the room with the barest hint of a limp, turning his eyes all about, but you noticed that he focused more on the windows than the interior of the room.
So, he was hiding from someone. That wasn’t good either.
“Uhh, this is the-” He glanced around again, but you could tell his actions were calculated. It takes an actor to recognize another. “Massage place?” He asked with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. You noticed a single bead of sweat on his brow, and the lump in your stomach grew heavier.
“Yep!” You kept your voice high and cheery. Stall for time. If he is hiding from someone, it means someone more dangerous could be coming. It would be better to just wait it out and not draw attention to here. “I don’t see anyone on our schedule for a while, so I assume you were looking to book an appointment?”
He thought a moment before adjusting his jacket and speaking up. “Not quite, I was looking for possibly a gift certificate? It’s for someone else.” The thoughtful pause between his words made his act even more obvious to you. “How much can thirty get me?”
Your smile faltered for a second. He must have never even been in one of these places before if he thought thirty dollars would be enough for anything. “Not much, I’m afraid.” You pulled out a pamphlet and opened the flap to show the prices of the massages. “Our half hour option is thirty-eight dollars, and we go up from there. I suppose we do offer a twenty minute chair massage for twenty-five, but if this is a gift I wouldn’t recommend that.”
“I see.” His eyes flashed down the paper faster than you think anyone could actually read, before he pulled it closer to him and leaned against the counter, casually keeping his back to the door. You watched as his baggy eyes glanced past you to the window once more, and he reached into his pocket.
Your anxiety skyrocketed for a moment before he pulled out his wallet and started fingering through the cash. He pulled out two twenties and put them on the desk. “Alright, give me a card for the half hour then.” You nodded, quickly reaching back for the envelope and thick cardstock.
“Is there anyone I should make this out to?” You asked, deftly writing in the amount for the card and the date.
“Ah, no don’t worry about that. Their name is hard to spell.” He said, and you left that part of the card blank.
You looked up to hand him the gift card, “Alrighty, well here you go, Mister…” You waited for his name in the most polite way you could think, just in case. He looked like he was about to answer, when the wall next to you exploded.
The ground hit you hard, but not as hard as the shower of bricks that came crashing down on you. Smoke filled the air with a ringing alarm, but the floor you were on seemed to spin as you desperately tried to hold onto a conscious thought.
What was happening?
You heard voices shouting, and glass breaking. You blinked and blinked, finally clearing your vision enough to see utter chaos outside the window, and where the wall used to be, you noticed. The man was nowhere to be seen, people outside were scrambling around in panic as flames licked the sides of the buildings. Someone covered in green metal towered above and shoved people out of the way, looking wildly around and shouting things too quickly to make out. The ringing sound in the air seemed stronger when he glanced in your direction, and you realized that it wasn’t the alarm going off, it was his suit.
He quickly turned around and darted off, the ringing sound quieting when he did. The pain surrounding your body started to register, but you couldn’t call out for help. Your mouth opened, only for no sound to escape you. Your vision started to tunnel, and you realized you weren’t breathing.
You inhaled, or tried to, and felt your lungs refuse to fill. Your ribs couldn’t move, and you realized the overwhelming weight you felt on you were the bricks from the wall, and you couldn’t push them off. Trying as hard as you could, you willed for your hand to move to maybe signal someone, but only burning sharp pains replied.
Then you saw him.
Spiderman.
The red suited hero stood out in your blurry view as he stopped between the buildings and looked at the disaster area. You felt your hope rise as the white what you assumed were his eyes turned to your direction. Yes! Over here! You opened your mouth wider, feeling the slightest bit of air enter your lungs. Almost enough for something.
A chunk of darkness fell from the sky, and the blurry spiderman caught it before dropping it beside him, blocking your view to him. No! He didn’t notice you. If only you could call out, he could save you! You weazed out a breath, trying not to focus on the building pain threatening to make you black out.
Can save you.
A voice whispered next to you, and you couldn’t tell who it was coming from. You started to notice your limbs getting cold, probably blood. You tried to reply. You didn’t want to die.
Then live.
The voice spoke again, and you felt the coldness surrounding you even tighter. The edges of the pain started to lift away, and your vision finally turned to darkness. The last thought you had was of the silent disappointment that a hero didn’t save you in your one time of need.
.
You gasped out, flailing in your bed and kicking the sheets around your feet, before you fell hard onto the floor of your apartment. You breathed hard, heart hammering in your chest as you sat in a cold sweat. Thoughts raced in your head in too many directions for you to make sense of anything. You were at work moments ago, and there was some creep buying a gift certificate, and then… then… nothing. Your brain reached out for what came next, but there was nothing there.
You looked at your arms, seeing them shake in the nighttime streetlight coming in from outside. They were fine. Why wouldn’t they be? You shook your head and took a deep breath, trying to steady yourself. You couldn’t remember anything after the man. Were you drugged? You didn’t think you would have drank anything around customers, but who knows what else could have possibly happened.
Maybe you just zoned out hardcore at work after that point, and nothing happened. One could hope at least. Resting your head in your hands for a moment, you let yourself cool off in the cold night air.
Nothing happened. You were fine. You didn’t feel hurt or otherwise wrong. In fact, you felt great. You might work for a massage therapy place, but working on the computer all day always left your shoulders sore, until now apparently. Were you sleeping that good?
Why were you awake anyway? You weren’t having a nightmare… Not that you remember your dreams much anymore. You hated waking up in the middle of the night, there was never anything else to do other than scroll social media, and that only kept you awake longer.
But it seemed like it was your only current option to get rid of your jitteriness.
You reached out to your nightstand, only to not feel your phone in its usual spot. You blinked, confused, and reached again. Nothing in the surrounding area. You finally turned on the lamp beside your bed and saw that the stand was empty, no sight of your phone. Could you have forgotten it at work? Very unlikely.
You stood up to look at your jacket, only to now notice you were still in your work clothes. How embarrassing. You were grateful you didn’t have any roommates to notice at least.
“Pajamas, then tv.” You whispered to yourself, starting a simple to-do list to survive the night. Walking to the dresser you found yourself thinking about your freshly cleaned favorite pajamas, but once you placed your hands on the drawer you felt the clothing on you tighten. You gasped and stepped back, looking down in time to watch as the work outfit seemed to liquify and pull itself in different directions, and solidifying into your pajamas.
You froze, not exactly sure what the proper reaction to this was supposed to be. A lump in your throat appeared, and you gently tried to swallow it down. “Huh.” Your voice was higher than you intended. You looked around the dark room, double checking just to make sure no one else was here. Nope, no prank crew, no cameras.
Were you a mutant? All of a sudden? The rest of your family was mutants free, but who knows if you got a gene. The gene… that gave you the lack luster power to change outfits. Disappointing, if that was really your superpower. Didn’t mutants get powers when they are younger though? Questions filtered through your head, and it was becoming too much.
Be calm.
The voice spoke, and you did the exact opposite of what it ordered. You yelped and fell to the ground, quickly crawling over to your nightstand and grabbing the bat you had propped against it. You looked around wildly for the source of the voice.
We are safe now. No harm.
You could hear how heavy you were breathing in the empty room, and could feel the sweat trickle down your neck. “We?” You asked out loud, not sure if you were going crazy. You knew you were a stressed person, but this was a bit much.
Yes. We are safe. We saved ourselves, where Spiderman has failed.
Confusion made you lower the bat, thinking about those words. All in a rush, the events came back to you. The explosion. The weight of bricks. The green armored man. Spiderman not noticing you.
You fell back onto your rear at the memories, eyes wide as you brought a hand to your mouth. Deep anger started to build up in the back of your mind, but you knew it wasn’t yours. “Who… who are you?” You asked.
You felt moisture at your eyes, and felt like you were crying. You touched your cheek and pulled back your hand, seeing sticky black ink drip on an arch. Before your panic could rise, blackness filled your vision.
Then you were falling.
But you weren’t yourself. You were… it , whatever it was. The land around you wasn’t earth, it was too orange, too broken. Dangerous animals were fighting below you, and you realized you weren’t falling, you were flying. Then you were violently hit, and space rushed past you. Things flashed black, and you found yourself alone, weak, until he showed up.
He who was so heroic, putting himself in harm's way for the benefit of others.
He who took care of you, taking every chance to use you and enjoy the power you gave him.
He who you grew attached to, as you gave him everything you were.
He who betrayed you.
Spiderman .
You felt the heartbreak of your only weakness being used against you as the one you trusted ripped you to pieces. He tore you off, and left you in the dirt weak and about to die. Until… Until another showed up. Only for spiderman do do the same to you yet again.
The story repeats. You are ripped from people that appreciate you, ones that abuse you, ones that know nothing and ones that know everything about you. Finally the memories slow down, showing a man with long black hair and a leather jacket, the same man that was in your business, getting ahold of you. You trusted him to be good, he was a soldier, someone trained to protect others! And yet, when you desperately granted him power in order for your own survival, he turned it against others, even one he considered a friend. He killed and slaughtered despite you saying no, but he wouldn’t let you go.
Until he was weakened, and chased, and hunted.
We have to save them, they are innocent! You-it-they- shouted. Your other refused, hurting enough on his own, he did not care for the innocent caught in the blast. And so when the sound came and stripped you from him, you took your chance to save the innocent.
That innocent was you.
Actually you.
The blackness pulled itself out of your vision and you gasped for breath. You flexed your fingers, trying to ground yourself in reality, trying to remember who you were. You touched your face, bringing yourself back to your own mind, your own memories.
“You are… Venom?”
We are Venom.
The correction weighed heavy in your gut as you realized the gravity of the situation. You saw how the symbiote, which somehow you knew it was called that now, bonded with a host. They were loyal, they protected whoever their other was. And that other, was now you.
You sat in silence for a moment, slowly mulling over your thoughts, before realizing that they were what saved you from death earlier. “I suppose… I should thank you?” You awkwardly asked, still not sure if you were having the craziest dream ever.
No thanking necessary. We are both innocents Spiderman have failed.
The anger built up again, and you felt the heartbreak from the memories ache in your chest. “He’s less of a hero than I thought, huh?” You asked quietly, recalling the blurry figure being too busy to save you. Sure, in theory you could understand him not being able to reach everyone when things happened, but you couldn’t stop your disappointment from building. He was right there , he only needed to look in your direction and you were sure he would have seen you buried under those bricks.
He is a hero. Does not make him good.
There was a hint of respect in the voice, or was that something more? It was obvious Venom hated Spiderman because how he treated them, but at the same time the desire to be a hero itself was there. One of the good guys, to save people, and bring hope to others. And now it burned in your veins like it did back when you were young.
Superheroes and villains were always so intriguing to you, but you could never fantasize about being a hero for long. The world is too big, too powerful for you to pretend that you could have a impact. There were people that change the shape of earth around them or bend metal with their thoughts, who would have noticed a plain human receptionist stand up to them, when even modern cops didn’t even stand a chance? The most you could ever do is pretend to be a deterrent for mildly threatening humans to protect other employees, but you knew you purposely avoided looking at any sort of news because of how useless it made you feel. You weren’t even considered strong for a human. You were average.
But now? Now you had leverage. You had something that could make a difference. The thought of it thrilled you. “Can… can we be a hero now? Now that I have you?”
Indeed. We would protect others.
You felt the rush of excitement with the idea of your childhood dream coming true. It felt childish, something that you didn’t deserve, something impossible. And yet, memories that didn’t belong to you played in the back of your mind. Memories of fighting monsters you didn’t know existed, memories of saving an underground civilization, memories of being more powerful than you could have dreamt of. Just the thought of how strong Venom was in his past hosts made your mouth salivate.
Huh. You wondered if that was a side effect of wearing an alien as pajamas.
You wiped your mouth and swallowed, quickly standing up to go to the bathroom. Dream or not, you were ready to charge right ahead with all of… this. “Alright, show me what you… we look like.” You spoke, pulling the sliding mirror open for you to get a full body view of yourself.
The pajamas pulled and liquified once more, before darkening and cold black tendrils started climbing across your body. It was rather horrifying to watch, but you stood there and accepted it. Either Venom had already worked itself into you brain to be used to it, or you were much more okay with intimate relationships with aliens than you realized.
The tendrils stacked and climbed up your neck, quickly coating your skin before covering your eyes and mouth. You felt trapped in darkness for just a second, before you felt yourself change .
You could feel yourself moving, shifting, as your center of balanced changed and you start to topple forward. Your hand instinctively reaches out in front of you and hits the mirror, catching you as your vision pulls from black to white, before fading to normal… but the shadows of the room don’t look quite as dark as they should. You looked into the mirror, to find yourself face to face with a monster.
You couldn’t even recognize yourself. For one, you were big . You were never one to work out, but Venom seemed to supply the muscles on their own. They weren’t nearly as big as in some of the memories they showed you, but still incredibly impressive. You were also much taller, at least by a foot, if not more.
The oily darkness coated your skin, or maybe it was your skin now, you couldn’t quite tell at this point, but the white logo of the spider splayed proudly on your chest, its long legs trailing down your ribs and arms, ending at your hands. And oh my, your hands. They were dangerous looking. Strong, sharp, and deft. The nails on those things looked like they could cut through metal without issue. You brought a hand to your face and observed it closer in the mirror.
Large, messy, white eyes were a defining feature for your face, as they seemed to take up nearly half of it. They looked like blobby versions of Spiderman’s mask, if a bit more wicked looking. The other half of your face consisted of a monstrous mouth, which was utterly overflowing with sharp, even more dangerous looking teeth. You ran a nail across them, observing quietly, before opening your mouth.
Like everything else in this change, it was big. You could open your mouth way further than you should be able to, in fact it might be the most unnerving thing about the change, strangely enough. You snap your jaw shut and stand back from the mirror, taking a moment to settle in this new skin.
“We don’t exactly look… Heroic. I can see why we- you had a hard time.” You stumbled on your words, getting caught up just looking at all of the defined muscles in your arms alone. “But this…think we could get used to this.” You smiled, seeing your jaw pull back in an unnatural way.
“Let’s go for a test run.”

MCU’s latest movie Shang-Chi and the Legend Of The Ten Rings explores the powerful Makluan rings belonging to the villain, The Mandarin, in a satisfactory manner. However, there are plenty of other details about the rings that only comic fans are familiar with. One of such details involves the fate of the rings after The Mandarin’s death.
RELATED: 10 Most Bizarre MCU Comic Book Storylines That Actually Made It To Screen
After the villain was defeated by Tony Stark, the rings fled from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Weapon Vault Omega. Each ring found a new host, thus creating 10 different versions of The Mandarin with specific powers. While some of the hosts were canny, enterprising, and innovative, others felt lost after their lives were drastically altered by the rings.
10 Lord Remaker
Tumblr media
Appearing in Iron Man (Vol. 5) #21, Lord Remaker was a Chinese warlord who took over Mandarin City after The Mandarin’s death. The Matter-Rearranger Ring, aka Remaker, located him and chose him as the first host, making him Mandarin-One.
Lord Remaker was one of the worst hosts of the rings because he lacked a proper blueprint on how to live with the ring. His attempts to use the atomic powers of the rings to create bombs in order to attack Troy Central Control only succeeded partially. He couldn’t agree with other ring bearers too, hence he found himself being fought by Mandarin-Seven before being beheaded by Malekith the Accursed.
9 Marc Kumar
Tumblr media
Mark was a freelance marketing executive in The Invincible Iron Man (Vol. 5) #27. He fell in love with Pepper, who together with Tony, makes up one of the best couples in the MCU. By listening to Pepper’s tales about her time with Stark, he concluded that the billionaire had mistreated her. The Mento-Intensifier Ring, aka The Liar, hence saw him as an appropriate host and approached him.
As Mandarin-Eight, Marc failed to accomplish anything. His single attempt at trying to fight Tony Stark ended in defeat as the Avenger took him out with a repulsor blast, leaving him admitted in the ICU of a S.H.I.E.L.D. hospital. His hate towards Tony was also misguided and it led to losing the only person he cared about. After learning that he had tried to go after Tony, Pepper returned the engagement ring he gave her and declared that she had nothing but love for her boss.
8 Colin Sixty
Tumblr media
A clone created by A.I.M. in Iron Man: Fatal Frontier Infinite Comic #11, Colin was selected by the White Light Ring aka Daimonic, as its host, effectively becoming Mandarin-Two. After several failed attempts at killing Iron-Man, Colin was eventually defeated by Iron Patriot.
RELATED: 10 Ways Shang-Chi Could Drastically Change The MCU
Colin’s failure in almost everything he tried also makes him one of the worst hosts of the rings. Despite having plenty of powers (since he wasn’t human) he failed at killing both Iron Man and Malekith the Accursed. He also wasn’t self-sufficient as he had to rely on the help of 3 other Mandarins in his missions. Even with the assistance, he still failed.
7 Lightning Conductor
Tumblr media
In The Invincible Iron Man (Vol. 5) #26, an unnamed Broadway director became bitter after Tony fired him from a musical about his life. The Lightning Ring quickly grabbed the opportunity and made him Mandarin-Nine, giving him Electro-Blast powers.
Lightning Conductor’s lack of goals made him an unlikable host. All he desired was to fight Iron Man and even that task seemed too heavy for him. He was unaware of the extent of his powers hence he found himself needing to recharge at the most inconvenient of times. His lack of awareness also made him fail to anticipate the attack by Malekith the Accursed, who decollated him before stealing his ring.
6 Thomas Wilkins aka Endotherm
Tumblr media
Wilkins was an incompetent security guard at Stark International’s London branch in Iron Man #136. He constantly feared getting fired so he figured that killing Stark would be the best way to avoid that. After Stark thwarted Wilkins’ plans, the Ice Blast Ring approached him to become Mandarin-Ten.
Wilkin’s delusional nature qualifies him as one of the worst ever hosts of the rings. He was also unable to do anything right since even after stealing some of the best gadgets from Stark International, he was unable to put up a fight against Iron Man. Wilkins was also too weak that Abigail Burns was able to take his ring without much effort.
5 Victor Kohl aka The Exile
Tumblr media
Kohl was considered the black sheep in his family because he didn’t pass through Terrigenesis hence he was eager to prove himself.  When the Black Light Ring aka Nightbringer chose him as Mandarin-Five in Iron Man (Vol. 5) #28, he was more than glad to accept.
RELATED: 10 Underrated Marvel Comic Book Characters Fans Would Still Love To See Appear On Screen
As host, Kohl hardly did anything admirable. His decision to allow the ring to fully control him led him to choices he would regret, such as killing his own family. He was also not noble enough to take responsibility for his own actions, and he instead blamed Iron Man for not stopping him. He was also too incompetent as a member of the Inhumans that Medusa had to boot him from the group.
4 Harvey Elder aka Mole Man
Tumblr media
The Mole Man—one of the first villains the Fantastic Four fought in the comics—was also selected by the Daimonic ring in Iron Man (Vol. 5) #26. As Mandarin-Six, he tried to create ring-powered advanced weapons but was stopped so he escaped and took up a new gig as a bounty hunter of HYDRA operatives.
Most villains are often too egotistical to accept defeat but Mole Man knew he couldn’t win against Iron Man and the Dark Angel so he fled. His refusal to become Mandarin Prime when given the chance also highlighted his analytical prowess. He was aware it would all be pointless so he chose to leave the ring behind.
3 Alec Eiffel
Tumblr media
Alec Eiffel was chosen by the Votex Ring aka Spin as its host in Iron Man (Vol. 5) #25, thus becoming Mandarin-Three. Like Mole Man, he aimed to create superweapons that could destroy cities.
Eiffel proved to be smarter than other hosts by making a pact with Tony Stark to retrieve the rest of the rings. It might have been one of the most unlikely friendships in Iron Man comics but it didn’t last because Eiffel betrayed Stark. His cunning ways aside, he was also incredibly gifted. He had super speed, something even Tony acknowledged by admitting that he was as fast as Quick Silver (who moves at 4091 m/s). And unlike other realms, he also had teleportation powers that allowed him to move through realms.
2 Abigail Burns
Tumblr media
Abigail was an activist who felt the world would be a better place without hegemony and capitalism. Seeing her as a suitable host, the Flame-Blast Ring, aka Incandescence, approached her in Iron Man (Vol. 5) #18.
RELATED: 10 Movies & TV Shows Where You’ve Seen The Shang-Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings Cast
Abigail was a great host because she chose to do the right thing after discovering that all her ring wanted was for her to get rid of Iron Man. Most of the other hosts were villainous, but Abigail performed plenty of heroic acts, first attacking Mandarin-One and Mandarin-Five then helping Tony Stark destroy the weapons base in Sinister London. She also had plenty of resilience as she was still keen on fighting injustice even after both of her arms were severed by Malekith the Accursed.
1 Malekith The Accursed
Tumblr media
Traditionally one of Thor’s main comic book villains, Malekith the Accursed was approached to serve as the new bearer of the Disintegration Beam Ring, aka Spectral in Iron Man (Vol. 5) #23. Instead of being content with the single ring, he attacked other hosts as he wanted the entire set of rings in order to become the one and only Mandarin.
Malekith’s ambition set him apart as the best host of them all. He was an incredible fighter and strategist, seen from how he attacked all the other hosts without getting himself killed or harmed. When he was cornered by his new adversary Iron Man, he was also wise enough to make a deal for the Avenger to spare his life in exchange for the ring he had. More impressively, he managed to flee back to Asgard and begin a new war with Thor.

The Sister- Chris Evans One Shot
Pairing: Chris Evans X Reader
Prompt: You are Tom Holland’s older sister and go to visit him for a few weeks while he is filming Captain America: Civil War. When you arrive, you catch the eye of his costar, Chris Evans.
Word Count: 1430
~~~
Living in the US by yourself meant that you weren’t able to see your younger siblings often, especially since the Atlantic Ocean separated you. When your brother called to tell you he would be filming the latest Captain America movie in Atlanta, you were eager to visit him. Your boss allowed you two weeks off from work and you flew out to Atlanta the moment you could.
“Y/N!” You heard someone shout at you in the airport. You looked up and smiled, seeing your younger brother.
“Tom!” You smiled, letting go of your suitcase to give him a hug. You hadn’t seen him in months, except for on the movie screen. You let go of him and he chivalrously took your luggage.
“How have you been?” He asked you.
“Better now that I get to see some family. I get lonely over here.” You replied, “How about you? You’re Spiderman now.”
“It’s so surreal. I can’t believe it’s really happening.” Tom admitted, loading your two bags into his rental car. You got into the passenger seat and he went into the driver’s side.
“How was your flight?” He asked.
“Not too bad. I had the window seat and no one else in my row.” You shrugged.
“I’m excited. You finally get to meet everyone.”
“Everyone? All those celebrities?” You asked with a laugh. You still couldn’t believe that your own baby brother was on the road to being a big time movie actor. You still saw Tom as the dorky little five year old and now he was twenty and filming a Marvel movie.
“Yep. All of them. I told Scarlett that you were a fan, so she’s looking forward to meeting you.” Tom explained.
“Anything I need to know before meeting them?” You asked, “Any touchy topics or weird personal space issues?”
“There’s no personal space issues. Everyone is really friendly.” He assured you. Although you were the older sibling, you were the one who got nervous about meeting people, especially if those people happened to be celebrities. Tom pulled into the studio’s parking lot and put your bags into his trailer. He then took you inside to where they filmed most of the movie.
“Who’s your friend?” Anthony asked, seeing Tom and you standing together. Your brother had his arm around your shoulders as you took in everything around you.
“Anthony, this is my sister, Y/N. Y/N, this is Anthony Mackie. He plays Sam in the film.” Tom introduced. You smiled as you shook Anthony’s hand.
“Nice to meet you.”
“I didn’t know you had a sister.” He said, turning to your brother.
“That’s because whenever I start to talk, you tune me out.” Tom replied.
“I’m sorry. Can you repeat that? I wasn’t listening.” Anthony joked, making you laugh. The older actor soon left you alone with Tom again. The directors called action and they began to film a scene between Steve and Tony. You watched with Tom from the side as Scarlett Johansson interacted with Robert Downey Jr.
“Tom, I think I left my phone in your trailer.” You informed him after not feeling the device in your pocket.
“Okay. Do you want me to go with you or do you know your way around?” He asked, not knowing if you felt comfortable in the large studio or not.
“No. I think I’ve got this down.” You smiled, heading off towards the trailer. He went over to begin talking with Elizabeth after you left.
You successfully found his designated trailer and your phone inside it. You came out of the trailer and began to retrace your steps. You turned a sharp corner and instantly ran into someone. The person caught you quickly, resting their hands on your hips to steady you. You looked up and were met with the bright eyes of Chris Evans.
“I’m so sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going.” You stated, awkwardly clearing your throat after you realized his arms were still around you. He looked down and then let his hands slowly fall to his sides.
“It’s no problem. I haven’t seen you around here before.” Chris said, “I’m Chris.”
“Y/N. I just got in today. I’m visiting Tom for a couple weeks.” You replied with a shy smile.
“Tom?” He asked. Shock and confusion seemed to flash across his face.
“Y/N, there you are.” Tom said, coming around the corner, “I was worried you’d gotten lost. Hi, Chris.”
“Hey.” Chris replied, still trying to process what exactly was happening.
“Mackie suggested we all go out tonight for drinks. Are you coming?” Your brother asked his costar, casually putting an arm around your shoulder again. It was something he loved to do. He was younger than you, but he liked feeling as if he could protect you. He also liked acknowledging the fact that he is now taller than you.
“Of course.” He nodded, “Will you be there as well?”
“If Tom drags me along.” You joked.
“Y/N, let’s go meet the rest of the cast.” Tom said, pulling you away.
~~~
By the time night came, you had met 90% of his cast mates who were filming that day. You also met people from the crew, including the directors.
“No drinking tonight. You’re underage.” You stated, remembering how young your brother was. You two were in his car on the way to the club, where you’d meet up with everyone else who decided to go out tonight. One of his costars knew the club’s owner and, therefore, Tom would be allowed inside.
“But I can drink back home.” He defended.
“You’re not twenty-one yet. The law’s the law, Tommy.” You replied as he parked the car in the parking lot. You two got out and made your way towards the entrance.
“Geez, I thought you were visiting me so we could have fun together, not so you could be a bore.” He said, playfully upset.
“You don’t need to drink to have fun. You stick with your soda and sippy cup.” You stated, ruffling his hair.
“Hey!” He exclaimed, quickly sending a hand up to his hair to fix it, “I may be younger than you, but I don’t use a sippy cup.” You two showed the bouncer’s your IDs and were allowed inside.
“No alcohol.” You informed him in your strict, motherly tone. You two went over to the VIP section, where Chris, Sebastian, Anthony, and Elizabeth sat.
“Thank God Y/N’s here, I’m not alone now.” Elizabeth exclaimed as you sat beside her. In the few hours of knowing her, you became friends with Lizzie. She was glad to have a girl her age around set for a few days.
“Oh please, I have four brothers.” You replied, looking over at Tom. You could see Chris sitting across from you with a cold stare on his face as he glared at the empty bottle of beer on the table in front of him.
“I see you four have already had a round.” Tom laughed, acknowledging the glasses and bottles around the table.
“Tom’s underage so no giving him alcohol.” You explained to everyone.
“Aw, yeah, Tommy the itty bitty baby.” Anthony teased, reaching over to pinch your brother’s cheek.
“I’m going to get another beer. Anyone else want one?” Chris asked, standing up from his seat.
“I’ll take one.” Elizabeth said. Anthony and Sebastian nodded in agreement.
“I’ll go with you.” You offered, standing up and walking to the bar with Chris.
“Four beers.” Chris ordered from the bartender.
“Five actually.” You added. You two sat on a barstool as you waited for your drinks.
“So, you and Tom?” Chris asked, quietly.
“What about us?” You replied.
“Are you two together? Or?” He was looking for another option. His breath hitched in his throat when you began to laugh.
“I hope Tom and I aren’t together. Chris, he’s my brother.” You said.
“Oh,” was his embarrassed reply.
“Did you legitimately think we were together?” You asked.
“Well, you two are very close. I didn’t know what to think.” He said. The beers arrived, but neither of you moved.
“Were you jealous?” You teased.
“Maybe a little.” Chris replied, “But I don’t know much about you, other than the fact that you’re extremely attractive.”
“You think I’m attractive?” You asked.
“I’m not blind.” He laughed.
“I’m flattered.”
“I’ve got tomorrow morning off. What do you say we grab breakfast together? That way I can get to know you.”
“Breakfast sounds great.” You smiled. You two grabbed the beers and made your way back to the table. No one seemed to really notice the difference between you and Chris, until he whisked you away to the dance floor.
“They make a cute couple.” Elizabeth admitted, watching you and Chris from afar. Apart from Tom, she was the most sober one out of the group.
“Do you think he asked her out?” Tom questioned.
“Maybe.” She shrugged.
“At least it’s just Chris.” He replied.

A bit behind...but catching up!
So, I’ve been rather remiss with my writing recently for a ton of different reasons!! But mainly just didn’t get round to it….so here are a ton of reviews all in one go. Hopefully all spoiler free.
The Lego Batman Movie
So, I came into this off the back of loving the Lego Movie, and also as a huge comic book fan. Already, perhaps it is clear what direction this movie is going. I certainly didn’t hate the movie, I actually quite enjoyed it. But….and there was always a but coming….far too many of the good jokes were in the trailers, the characters just didn’t click for me the same way they did in the Lego Movie and whilst it was an enjoyable couple of hours I still felt disappointed.
I think this was more to do with my expectations, which were high. I just didn’t think this lived up to the warmth of character I got from the original Lego Movie, which had real heart. The Lego Batman Movie was trying to be too smart for its own good, and think it forgot to have any meaningful warmth. What warmth of character there was got quickly destroyed by some obvious humour.
This film had me smiling at the jokes, but rarely got close to making me actually laugh.
 Dunkirk
Well. What can I say about this film that hasn’t been said already. For me this was a masterpiece.
The score and soundtrack matched perfectly with the pacing of the film, and the drama unfolding on the screen in front of me. The lack of dialogue added to the weight of the tension that built up throughout the film. Whilst I was, I admit, a bit confused by the three different acts going at different timescales, they all came together beautifully towards the end.
There were no outstanding performances from the cast, as they were not needed. They just had to go with the flow of the film. The action was mesmerizing. And often, the lack of action was even more engrossing.
Having watched it in 4DX….yes 4DX….the seats move, you get sprayed with water, there is wind in your hair….this is the first film that actually benefitted from it! Although have to admit I did feel rather sea sick at stages.
The cinematography is basic in a way, but the film benefits from that. They keep it simple so you can focus on the action and the drama that keeps exploding, literally, all around you.
If I did scoring I would give this film 10/10….I came away exhausted, emotional and enthralled by what I had just seen. There are a couple of moments that jarred with me a little, but that is only compared to the brilliance of the rest of the film. In most normal films this would have been just part of it.
Oh, and as a lover of history, the slight historical inaccuracies bug me….but I just have to bury that pedantic side of me quite deep.
Dr Strange
This couldn’t be more different to Dunkirk. The latest character to come out of the Marvel machine ready for the big climax of the current phase of the cinematic universe. I have to admit as well that the Dr Strange character is one of my favourite comic book characters. Benedict Cumberbatch for me was perfectly cast for the arrogant surgeon who ends up as earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. So if any of that put your teeth on edge….frankly I am not sure you are going to enjoy this film.
It is even more full of comic book nonsense (which I love) than the other Marvel films. A lot of it makes little or no sense, as you are taken through a special effects led tale, full of action and random made up hocus pocus.
I enjoyed it well enough. Although I felt some of it was a bit one dimensional. Once you’ve stepped over the line of sanity into total weirdness, why stop and then try and make any of it make sense!!
A distinctly average addition, sadly, to the current universe. But was great to see Dr Strange finally hit the big screen.
 Guardians of the Galaxy 2
How do you follow the surprise hit of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The original Guardian’s film was a surprise hit, and brought a ton of new fans into the comic book world. The delightful mix of characters that make up the dysfunctional Guardian’s superhero team, where you are often not even sure what their superpowers are!
The film is full again of the nod and a wink humour, as well as some more childish humour.
Dave Bautista is great again playing one of the roles he was made to play – the basic but heartfelt – Drax.
Vin Diesel reprises his role as Groot, this time regrowing from a baby.
Chris Pratt also plays the long suffering leader of the group trying to keep them together in a manner reminiscent of a sitcom.
This film kicks off with a typically entertaining and musically supported entrance that sets a high bar for the movie. Which sadly it cannot quite live up to. There are some moments where it has some moments that border on genuinely moving, but they don’t quite fit with the overall tone of the movie.
It is an amusing, and at times very funny, movie. But like the soundtrack, the movie does not live up to the promise of the first one. Like many others, I came away having really enjoyed it, but I couldn’t point to much now that was outstanding about it.
Moonlight
So the Oscar winner that nearly wasn’t thanks to some drunk PwC staff….we’ve all been there right….night out….few drinks…make a bit of a scene…..nearly ruin the Oscars and break a ton of hearts…..ok….so just me. Alright then.
This movie was a great movie. It was made to win Oscars and awards. How could it not. It is beautifully shot. Deals with some genuinely extremely important issues in a tender and emotional manner. The cast act their hearts out in it. The 3 acts that make up the film chart some heart-wrenching moments and work well despite the distance in time between each of them as we follow the main protagonist.
I found it boring though. I didn’t want to. I wanted to be drawn in and love the film from start to finish. I just wasn’t. Maybe it was whatever mood I may have been in at the time. But it felt like a movie made for critics. Not a movie made to be watched and loved. I guess that is fine. It is just a shame that such a critically acclaimed film had me playing Clash Royal during in on my phone, and not pausing to get water from the fridge!!
You should still give it a try. It may work better for you. Just didn’t work for me.
 Hell or High Water
Having seen Moonlight I decided to watch one of its Oscar competitors. This modern day retelling of a western, set in West Texas, was much more my thing. There, I said it off the bat.
It had the mix of anti-hero and hero – where the bad guys are clearly bad, but you also can’t help but root for them and want things to work out. The hero is….well….a bit obnoxious (played brilliantly by Jeff Bridges). This is essentially a bank heist western, with the sheriff chasing down the robbers across the desolate west Texan landscape. This ochre wasteland full of distant ranches, and populated by a rough and tumble background cast that seems so believable to an outside like me. They could be awful stereotypes for all I know!! But they work for this film. The dilapidated towns the story progresses through are the perfect backdrop to win your sympathy for the two main protagonists trying to make good, but in a bad and illegal way, before their time runs out.
This is a bit of a road trip movie, tinged with violence and a lot of non-PC discussion. It feels authentic and tragic. There are elements of a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid vibe at times. You can’t quite decide who you are rooting for, and this adds to the tension in what is a relatively short film, or at least feels it. As the pace throughout is great.
I really enjoyed this film. But I am a bit of a sucker for a good western….and whilst not part of the traditional genre, it takes a look at the characters you’d see in one through a modern day lens full of diners rather than saloons, cars rather than horses, and high powered rifles rather than pistols.
A sadly overlooked film by many. Full of surprising emotion and left me astounded I’d not heard more about this film.
Spiderman – Homecoming
He’s back. The web-slinger is back for this 3rd reboot!! Probably the most recognisable Marvel comic book character is finally working with Marvel again, and after the sneak peak in Civil War, now gets his own movie. Sony still own him, but they have decided not to butcher him quite so much and get some people who know what they are doing involved.
This movie has been talked about a lot, at least in the social media and media I tend to read….but I think this is fair to say is the most thought through of the Spidey movies so far. No more origin stories with poor old Uncle Ben getting shot, and “with great power comes great responsibility” – we get it alright!! When I get superpowers, I have to do good things. Ok Uncle Ben’s spirit I promise!!
Instead we get something subtly but significantly different. We get a movie that focuses much more on Peter Parker as a teenage boy struggling as a geek at high school, struggling with his new found powers, struggling to work out where he fits in. So basically a normal teenager, except the middle one!! I mean teenagers think they have new powers….like drinking cider at the park and wearing too much aftershave…but that doesn’t allow them to lift cars or do back-flips or walk on the ceiling.
By fitting it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well they manage to also fast-track the origin story of The Vulture, a little known Spiderman villain in the comics (little known outside of well….us geeks).
Tom Holland is excellent at Peter Parker/Spiderman (if that is a spoiler for you….then I’m sorry but everyone knows that!!), who hits the mark as a teenager. I’ve never been to an American High School, so I can only base this on my imagination and all the many films that are based in them. But this one rings true. He wants to fit in at high school. He wants to do more with the Avengers. He is busy fighting low level crime in New York at night. All a lot for a teenage boy. And I found myself really feeling for him.
Michael Keaton is excellent as the villain of the piece. He has an emotional resonance that is set-up very early on. His motivations for what he does are actually very understandable to most of us. It may be illegal, but he is sticking it to “the man” and doing right by his family. He is also a well balanced power vs Spiderman – no giant pillars of light in the sky here or alien invasions!! So it seems well balanced and a bit fresh. More in common with some of the Marvel and DC villains on Netflix and other streaming, than the main Marvel Universe. Plus, Michael Keaton can’t half act.
Robert Downey Jnr reprises his role as Iron Man yet again. As some sort of mentor for Peter Parker. This is the one part of the movie that bugged the hell out of me. Yes Tony Stark is meant to be a huge egotistical playboy….but here his instructions and advice really don’t work for me. He’s literally the worst mentor. Better they’d given him Loki that this occasionally disengaged failed father figure. Don’t get me wrong, they play it light with Iron Man to give Spiderman space to be the core of the film, and there are a few amusing lines. It just didn’t ring true throughout.
Overall though the balance between High School angst movie, bit of crime solving, a load of well done action, and your usual superhero stuff was hugely enjoyable. There were also a number of twists that I didn’t expect, and the supporting cast were great throughout and would like to see more of them.
Welcome back Spidey!!
 Logan
Is this the last time we’ll see the very buff Hugh Jackman as Wolverine? It does seem like the last time we’ll see Patrick Stewart as Professor X…..so how did they do in their swansong?
Well firstly saw this in a nice little cinema, and also dragged my girlfriend along – and so was slightly nervous about her reaction to it.
I think it is fair to say that this was somewhat better than most other X-men related films. Maybe I just like dystopian future type films? This one perhaps isn’t so much dystopian as just all a bit of a mess. Logan, aka Wolverine, is in retirement and seemingly hiding. Just not clear from what. But he appears to have had enough of the world, and is now working as a limo driver whilst also strangely living over the border in Mexico…
This is another film that has touches of the old fashioned western about it, with the scenery of bleak deserts and run down townships, with a fair share of violence.
The interplay between Wolverine and Professor X is actually quite touching. But the outstanding performance sits with the young Dafne Keen as Laura. A young mutant who has been given powers very similar to Wolverine. He flipping between violence and frustration, and the way she brings such an adult performance, reflects brilliantly how you’d expect someone who’d been through what she’s been through to actually be.
At times the film is a bit predictable, and the X rating has enabled them to really let loose with Wolverine’s violence. The ending has genuine emotion, or did for me. Not a great film, but better than I expected!
As for what my girlfriend thought….she enjoyed it as well. But think it may be her choice next time! But that’s only fair.
