Paul B. Cummings, the director of Rick and Morty’s recent live-action shorts, sat down to discuss how he and Christopher Lloyd crafted the now viral live-action incarnation of Rick Sanchez. The series of shorts aired ahead of the show’s season 5 finale, which premiered in two parts over this past weekend. Jaeden Martell portrays a live-action version of Morty to accompany Lloyd’s performance as Rick, completing the iconic duo.
Lloyd’s casting is particularly poetic considering the fact that series creator, Justin Roiland, first conceived of Rick and Morty as a parody of Back to the Future. The earliest iterations of the two characters were much more overt in their parallels to Robert Zemeckis’ classic time travel trilogy, with the two leads being named Doc Smith and Mharti McDonhalds (riffing on the names of Doc Brown and Marty McFly, respectively). Although the show eventually evolved into its own phenomenon built atop its own merits, Back to the Future’s influence continues to be a foundational aspect of the show; in broad strokes, both franchises follow an elderly scientist and his youthful sidekick as they adventure across different timelines using time travel technology. Now, with Lloyd definitively cast as a live-action Rick Sanchez, Rick and Morty seems to have come full circle back to its humble roots.
Related: Rick & Morty: How It Evolved From A Back To The Future Riff (& Where It Might Go)
Cummings, who directed the shorts, recently discussed how Lloyd’s take on the belching mad scientist came to be. In an interview with io9, Cummings says that he “told Chris [Lloyd] to just run with it and repeat the lines […] to get a little unhinged.” Check out the director’s full comments below:
Everything was pretty scripted out with not much riffing, but when we shot the “100 years” bit I told Chris to just run with it and repeat the lines over and over and try to get a little unhinged. We watched that clip from the show a few times right before shooting it.
Tumblr media
Despite the similarities between Rick and Morty and Back to the Future, Rick Sanchez’s abrasiveness is undoubtedly a drastic departure from the eccentric yet endearing nature of Doc Brown. Lloyd himself would agree; according to Cummings, the veteran actor told the director that the two characters “were like brothers that took two very different paths in life.” Lloyd’s comments cement the notion that, despite sharing some creative DNA, the two franchises stand apart as two unique universes.
As season 5 of Rick and Morty comes to a close, fans are still buzzing over the implications – both in-universe and out – of Cummings’ shorts. Following the release of each short, Adult Swim would tweet a cryptic dimensional designation (such as C-137), seemingly hinting that the live-action iterations are canon to some extent within the universe of the show. If this is indeed the case, it’s very well possible that Lloyd and Martell may reprise their roles in the near future. However, no such connection has been officially confirmed thus far. With season 6 on the distant horizon, fans may have a while to wait before any such theories are confirmed.

The Hugh Jackman-starring Van Helsing failed to make a lasting impact, but a forgotten anime prequel is considerably better than the movie. Released in 2004, Universal’s action-horror movie was an early attempt to connect its roster of classic monsters. Written and directed by Stephen Sommers, who successfully updated The Mummy in 1999, the movie failed to strike the correct balance between action spectacle and cheesy homage to old-fashioned monster mashups like 1943’s Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman.
The Mummy successfully honored the classic monster of 1932 while delivering an Indiana Jones-style adventure. Sommers failed to achieve the same feat in Van Helsing, which doubled down on action and CGI instead of a gripping narrative or character development. Van Helsing follows Jackman’s gung-ho monster hunter traveling to 1800s Transylvania, tasked by the Vatican to destroy Dracula (Richard Roxburgh) and protect the survivor of a Romanian family (Kate Beckinsale). His mission involves vampire brides, werewolves, and Frankenstein’s monster (Shuler Hensley), but before all this, Sommers’ film opens with Helsing battling Mr. Hyde (Robbie Coltrane) atop Notre-Dame.
Related: Van Helsing: Dracula’s Brides Are The Movie’s Best Villains
The events preceding this event were detailed in a little-seen animated short film released the same year, titled Van Helsing: The London Assignment. The 30-minute story features Helsing (voiced by Jackman) and his sidekick, Friar Carl (David Wenham), pursuing Dr. Jekyll (Dwight Schultz) and his alter ego, Hyde, through the streets of London, all the way to Buckingham Palace. Although primarily intended to promote the live-action film, the prequel is a more streamlined and entertaining adventure that isn’t weighed down by its commitment to portraying many of Universal’s Classic Monsters. In fact, The London Assignment suggests the entire endeavor would have been better served as an animated TV show.
Tumblr media
The animation doesn’t shy away from some violent imagery. The opening sets a grotesque, Gothic tone visually reminiscent of the Jack the Ripper murders, recalling 2001’s From Hell. Sharon Bridgeman’s direction suitably echoes the energy of Sommers, but the relative simplicity of Jekyll and Hyde’s rampage provides a more cohesive story than Van Helsing‘s desire to throw every monster on the screen to conceal gaping holes in its script. The prequel begins as horror, succinctly establishing Hyde as an intimidating presence as opposed to his live-action counterpart. Sommers’ film crammed too many villains into one story, none of them appearing much of a threat amidst ghastly jokes and an inability to decide which monster was to be most feared. Jekyll and Hyde‘s solo outing generally fixes this problem, also giving him his own “romantic” motive in common with classic monster films.
The story then transitions into a fantasy adventure, inserting steampunk gadgets and an engaging fight atop a speeding train in the London Underground that evokes the thrilling silliness of the bus chase in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. In fact, the animation bears a stronger resemblance to Sommers’ earlier work than his own efforts, incorporating various wacky set-pieces including a showdown atop Tower Bridge. It demonstrates how the monster-hunting adventures of Van Helsing would have been well-suited as an animated show, in which its fantasy elements wouldn’t be hindered by contemporary visual effects, unlike Sommers’ previous creations, including Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King. The long format of a series would allow more time for character development while introducing a diverse gallery of monsters in various scenarios.
With several of the film’s actors reprising their roles, the animated short is a superficial but lively piece of entertainment that improves on the dour sensibilities of the live-action disaster. It doesn’t boast stellar writing, and its story may prove too eccentric for some. However, the animated steampunk action of Hugh Jackman’s hero captures a greater sense of fun than the demoralizing advertisement for Universal’s Classic Monsters prevalent in the live-action Van Helsing.

One of the best things about The Big Bang Theory is that no matter how much the main characters transform and grow over the years, they’re still incredibly similar to the people whom viewers’ first met in season 1. Characters like Amy and Bernadette have shifted a bit personality-wise since their first episode, but they’re consistent more than not.
RELATED: One Quote From Each Character Of TBBT That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality
However, there are rare moments where the main characters said things that weren’t aligned with their personalities. Everyone from Howard to Penny had moments that seemed unusual for their typical behavior.
7 Penny: “In Fact Recently, I’ve Been Thinking That Given The Parameters Of Your Experiment, The Transport Of Electrons Through The Aperture Of The Nano-Fabricated Metal Rings Is Qualitatively No Different Than The Experiment Already Conducted In The Netherlands.”
When Penny and Leonard began dating, Penny wanted to understand what Leonard did for work. With physics outside the realm of Penny’s understanding, Sheldon promised to teach her a thing or two. Penny didn’t care what opinions others had of her dating Leonard, but she wanted to at least understand what he was working on.
After a long and tiring lesson from Sheldon, Penny learned two long-winded sentences that she recited in front of the group. What she said was true and completely out of character, which is why the group had their tongues hanging out of their mouths as she spoke.
6 Leonard: “Right. Just Kissing. It Wasn’t Even Very Good. She Was A Smoker. I’d Just Been Seasick…”
It was a smart career decision for Leonard to go away at sea to work with Professor Stephen Hawking’s scientific group as he would be a part of history if their experiment went well. But the trip seemed to be more play than work for Leonard.
RELATED: Leonard’s 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Career Decisions On The Big Bang Theory
When Leonard came back from sea and was about to walk down the aisle with Penny, he admitted that he had cheated on her while he was on the ship. Everything he was saying was completely out of character because he had fought to be with Penny for years. Why would he throw it away for a kiss at sea? Penny (and fans) were disappointed at Leonard for how he treated her.
5 Sheldon: “We Lock That Door, Lower Our Underpants A Little, And Make A Baby.”
It took Sheldon years to be comfortable enough with Amy to call her his girlfriend. It took him even longer to ask him to marry her. But somewhere in between the rollercoaster of their relationship, Sheldon and Amy did an experiment on the combination of their genes. Seeing how brilliant the results were, Amy couldn’t wait to replicate the results. Sheldon, on the other hand, had another idea: he wanted to make a baby.
The realization that they could produce a genius made Sheldon excited. But hearing him say, “We lock that door, lower our underpants a little, and make a baby” was one of the best, albeit, shocking quotes Sheldon has ever said. Sheldon is not fond of personal intimacy, so for him to want to procreate was uncharacteristic for him.
4 Howard: “She Wants A Commitment And I’m Not Sure She’s My Type.”
When Howard and Bernadette first started dating, Howard slowly stopped answering her calls. The ups and downs of their relationship were relatable for viewers, but fans couldn’t help but wonder if Howard realized how good he had it with Bernadette.
RELATED: 10 Ways Howard & Bernadette Are The Most Relatable Couple From The Big Bang Theory
Howard was always trying to land himself a girlfriend, and now that he had one that was as beautiful and smart as Bernadette, it was odd that he was suddenly not fond of “commitment.” Out of all the men, Howard was the most desperate for affection.
3 Raj: “Koothrappali Out. God Bless That Boy, I Don’t Know What I’d Do Without Him.”
If there’s one thing that fans would change about Raj’s storyline in TBBT, it would be that he got the happy ending he desperately wanted since season 1. He wanted a wife and kids more than his friends — he even shot his shot with Penny.
In an episode where Raj won an award from People magazine, his personality began to shift. He suddenly thought he was better than his friends and could get any woman he wanted. In one scene, he was on the phone talking to his assistant and sounded cocky and better than everyone else. It’s rare that viewers heard Raj say “Koothrappali out” on the phone, or even rely so heavily on an assistant he had for one day.
2 Amy: “Now, Before This Goes Any Further, You Should Know That All Forms Of Physical Contact Up To And Including Coitus Are Off The Table.”
Amy is one character who changed the most throughout the series. She transformed from a robotic and shy woman to someone who was outwardly sexual and spoke her mind.
At the start, Amy told Sheldon that “all forms of physical contact” were off the table. This is incredibly out of character for the Amy fans know in season 12 because Amy practically begs Sheldon for hugs and forms of intimacy. It’s hard to picture her not wanting to sleep with Sheldon when she asked him to get physical with her for years.
1 Bernadette: “Does She Pick Your Clothes For You In The Morning Like You’re Nine Years Old?”
When Bernadette and Howard go on their first date, the only thing the two have in common is their overbearing mothers. The two shared stories of how domineering their mothers were, with Bernadette claiming her mom still picked out her clothes. This was incredibly strange because as fans get to know Bernadette, they see how independent she is. Her mother is rarely in her life and she judges Howard for how close he is with his mother. The inconsistent quote from Bernadette was out of character for her because it didn’t match her reality.

Warning! Potential spoilers for Devil’s Reign #1 by Marvel Comics below
Marvel’s greatest heroes are banding together to take on the Kingpin but will find out the crime boss and current Mayor of New York has his own army of villains to fight back. In the newly revealed event, Devil’s Reign, the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will take on Wilson Fisk, who will unleash his years-in-the-making plan to declare war on them while unleashing some of Marvel’s most iconic villains to stop them.
Earlier this month, Marvel revealed eight new titles, hinting at what’s to come next. Among the announcements included a new Multiversal epic called Avengers Forever, X Deaths/X Lives of Wolverine, a new series starring Kang the Conqueror called Timeless, the long-teased Fantastic Four: Reckoning War, as well as new takes on She-Hulk and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. But, perhaps, the most exciting announcement was the Devil’s Reign event. The comic spins out of the excellent current run on Daredevil, which has seen Matt Murdock get sent to prison, and Elektra takes his place as the defender of Hell’s Kitchen. The new event will feature both Daredevils and more Marvel heroes teaming up to stop the Kingpin before it’s too late.
Related: Marvel Reveals What Happened If The Avengers Lost In Endgame
Marvel Comics revealed more details about Devil’s Reign from Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto this week, teasing the event will be like a “classic-style Marvel Comics crossover,” featuring numerous tie-ins while introducing new series. Devil’s Reign will feature the Kingpin trying to gain more power in the Marvel Universe with some “shocking truths” that will expose his greatest enemies. Marvel heroes, including the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Daredevil, and Spider-Man, will become the focus of Kingpin, as he’ll use his own team of villains to enact his mysterious plans.
Tumblr media
So, who makes up Kingpin’s villain squad? Marvel teased that Crossbones, Taskmaster, Typhoid Mary, Shocker, Whiplash, Kraven, and Rhino will all assist the Mayor of New York. Kingpin will command those villains to give the greatest heroes on Earth some serious trouble. Marvel hints that unleashing the villains is just his opening act, and the six-issue series will reveal more evil plans from the Kingpin.
Zdarsky and Checchetto’s run on Daredevil has been incredible, so to see the pair team up for a new Marvel event featuring the protectors of Hell’s Kitchen and Kingpin is exciting. Kingpin has slowly been building towards his upcoming power grab, and it seems Marvel heroes will experience his full wrath when Devil’s Reign #1 comes to comic book stores on December 1st.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If…? episode 5.
In Marvel’s What If…?, the Marvel Cinematic Universe confirms just how dangerous the Dark Avengers will turn out to be. What If…? episode 5 revealed how the MCU would react in a zombie apocalypse, and it wasn’t great. The episode changes the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp, showing Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne bringing back a zombie-like virus from the Quantum Realm. The virus spreads throughout the world, taking the lives of numerous characters, including Captain America (voiced by Josh Keaton), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), and Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). After securing the Mind Stone from Vision (Paul Bettany), the few remaining heroes head to Wakanda to use the stone’s power to find a cure.
Marvel seemingly already has the makings of a future Dark Avengers team, a.k.a. a group of heroes with possibly nefarious purposes, and it’s all due to Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a.k.a. Val. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Val made a surprise debut to recruit John Walker (Wyatt Russell), a former Captain America, to her side. She follows up that appearance with a post-credit moment in Black Widow. In the scene, Val chats with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who’s already one of her recruits. Now, Val’s offering Yelena the chance to go after Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), blaming the arrow-slinging hero for Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) death.
Related: Why So Many Of The MCU’s Celestial Beings Never Interfere
Though indirectly, What If…? subtly confirms how menacing the Dark Avengers would be. In What If…? episode 5, the Avengers are the catalyst for the zombie apocalypse spiraling out of control. “It was the Avengers’ heroism that sealed humanity’s fate,” Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher states in the episode, adding, “Because once Earth’s Mightiest Heroes joined the infected, no one else stood a chance.” While zombies are already enough of a world-ending issue, giving them superpowers makes the situation exponentially worse. Though the Dark Avengers wouldn’t necessarily spread a zombie virus, it seems the group could also spell the end for humanity.
Tumblr media
The episode shows just how threatening a united group of villains would be. Thus far in the MCU, there haven’t been many villains working together towards one goal. Though Thanos (Josh Brolin) brought the Black Order to his side in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, his minions didn’t have much of an impact overall. But The Watcher says it all in What If…?. Once the Avengers were corrupted, humanity didn’t stand a chance in the apocalypse. If a united group of superpowered individuals is enough to protect the Earth, it’s also enough to destroy it.
There are still several moving pieces before the Dark Avengers arrive. In the comics, the Dark Avengers come together in the wake of the Secret Invasion storyline, with Norman Osborn forming the team. Many of the elements from the original story, such as the Norman Osborn component, wouldn’t work in the current MCU. However, a Secret Invasion series is already on the way, and Val has begun her recruiting process. With that in mind, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes better start assembling because the Dark Avengers certainly are.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy redefined the superhero genre and the summer blockbuster. The three films provided audiences with a sense of escapism unlike anything they had seen before, thanks to its heart-pounding action scenes and collection of beloved characters.
RELATED: Spider-Man Villains Ranked Least-Most Likely To Win The Hunger Games
Peter Parker, his friends, and his foes all got many chances to show off their abilities on the big screen. Indeed, the trilogy’s characters star in some of cinema’s most unforgettable moments. From upside-down kisses in the rain to heartfelt monologues about the responsibilities of a hero, Sam Raimi’s trilogy has plenty of scenes that rank as some of the most memorable in cinematic history.
10 Eddie Becomes Venom
Tumblr media
To say that Topher Grace’s depiction of Venom is unpopular would be an understatement. In fact, most fans agree he was one of the things Spider-Man 3 got wrong. That doesn’t mean his character didn’t have some thrilling moments on-screen, though.
Eddie’s most memorable scene in the movie is his transformation into Venom. As Peter gets rid of the symbiote while in a belltower, the alien falls and lands on Eddie, quickly overtaking him. A killer soundtrack and fittingly gloomy atmosphere accompany the transformation. And even if Eddie ended up being an underwhelming villain, his conversion into Venom is definitely memorable.
9 Flint’s Confession
Tumblr media
Every fan knows that Spider-Man 3 has way too many villains. None have enough room to shine or prove themselves as worthy heirs to Goblin and Ock’s legacies, but they still get some redeeming moments. In Sandman’s case, it’s his final monologue to Peter, where he confesses his guilt about the part he played in Uncle Ben’s death.
Enhanced by Thomas Haden Church’s performance, the scene succeeds in providing some much-needed closure for Peter. Sandman is less a villain and more a tragic figure of circumstance, and his confession to Peter confirms it.
8 Goblin’s First Flight
Tumblr media
Willem Dafoe redefined what it means to be a comic book villain. His take on the Green Goblin is the perfect mix of over-the-top and seriousness, adding a sense of gravitas that overcomes the more cartoonish aspects of the role.
The character has plenty of memorable moments in the first Spider-Man movie. However, his initial confrontation against Spider-Man during the World Unity Fair will go down in cinematic history as one of the best action scenes of all time. It is fast-paced and thrilling, wasting not a single moment of its four-minute length. The Goblin gives an impressive display of his powers, proving that he will always be Spider-Man’s best villain.
7 Otto Octavius’s Sacrifice
Tumblr media
Sam Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films succeeded because of how much they fleshed out the villains. They weren’t just CGI creations trying to take over the world, but three-dimensional characters with ambitions and limitations of their own. Spider-Man 2‘s Otto Octavius is one of the genre’s most compelling villains, one who succeeds in winning the audience’s sympathy while remaining a fearsome threat.
RELATED: 10 Things Only Comic Book Fans Know About Doctor Octopus
During Ock’s final moments, he sees the error of his ways and decides to go down with his creation. Proclaiming he will “not die a monster,” Octavius sacrifices for the greater good. Thanks to Alfred Molina’s committed performance, the moment is one of the trilogy’s most memorable, cementing Octavius as one of the genre’s most complex characters.
6 J. Jonah Jameson Saves Peter Parker
Tumblr media
J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson is the very definition of spot-on casting. The actor took an already well-known character and translated him into the screen seamlessly and faithfully. Throughout his tenure in the trilogy, he gets plenty of comical moments, but his most memorable is his protection of Peter Parker.
When the Green Goblin blasts into the Bugle’s offices, he threatens Jameson and asks for the name of the photographer who takes Spider-Man’s pictures. Jameson refuses to tell on Peter, telling the Goblin the reporter sends his stuff through the mail. The scene shows a new and unexpected side to JJ, a glance at the empathy he works so hard to hide.
5 Uncle Ben’s Lesson
Tumblr media
Uncle Ben’s death is one of the defining moments in Peter Parker’s storyline. It’s the first of many (many) tragedies to happen to the character, inspiring him to become a hero in the first place. Sam Raimi provides enough room for Uncle Ben’s character to develop before arriving at the inevitable conclusion.
Cliff Robertson’s heartfelt monologue summarises the essence of Spider-Man. “With great power comes great responsibility” has become one of the most enduring phrases in pop culture, adding a more profound layer to Raimi’s trilogy. And while Uncle Ben has little screentime, his presence remains throughout the entire trilogy, thanks in large part to his now-immortal words.
4 Aunt May’s Advice
Tumblr media
Rosemary Harris remains the most compelling and memorable cinematic Aunt May. She imbued the role with plenty of warmth and empathy, avoiding the one-dimensional approach of subsequent movies. Harris’ Aunt May wasn’t just another peripheral character; on the contrary, she was Peter’s anchor, a constant source of inspiration for both the boy and the hero.
Her role as Peter’s guide is blatantly clear during her monologue in Spider-Man 2. While she packs her things to move out from her house, she talks to Peter about the nature and importance of heroism. Her speech is the gentle push Peter needed to understand the true role of his superhero counterpart. It’s a sweet but unforgettable moment that confirms Aunt May’s importance in the friendly neighborhood Spidey’s life.
3 Goblin’s Last Flight
Tumblr media
Throughout the Raimi trilogy, Harry Osborn suffers almost as many ups and downs as Peter himself. The loss of his father leaves him devastated and desperate to find someone to blame, leading to his descent into the Green Goblin persona. Alas, Harry was never his father, and he proves it at the last moment.
RELATED: 10 Most Powerful Variants Of Green Goblin In Marvel Comics
Sporting the Goblin costume, Harry goes to help Peter fight Venom and the Sandman. The two confirm their friendship, and Harry bravely dies fighting the enemies. Harry’s sacrifice continues the recurring theme in the trilogy that every victory comes with a steep price. It’s also a perfect send-off for the character and a way to restore the Osborn legacy.
2 Mary Jane’s Upside-Down Kiss
Tumblr media
For all its strengths, the Raimi trilogy has one undeniable flaw, and that’s its treatment of Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s main love interest in the comics and most movies. The character barely received any development beyond her damsel in distress role. Still, Mary Jane is a crucial figure in superhero movies; she defined the “superhero girlfriend” role for better and worse.
Out of all her moments in the trilogy, Mary Jane’s most memorable is her upside-down kiss in the rain with Spider-Man. It’s not only one of the most iconic scenes in modern cinema, but a perfect summary of MJ and Peter’s relationship. The setup may seem a tad outdated under a 2021 eye, but Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire’s chemistry is so electric that fans can let go of the more dubious elements of the scene and enjoy the romantic aspect.
1 Spider-Man Stops A Train
Tumblr media
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man remains as beloved now as he was back then. His take on Peter Parker gained new life thanks to the internet; indeed, Maguire’s Spidey is the king of memes, from Bully Maguire to the now-iconic “I missed the part where that’s my problem.”
However, this Spider-Man remains a blueprint for cinematic superheroes, thanks to his many heroic moments on screen. None is more memorable or inspiring than his efforts to stop a speeding train in Spider-Man 2. The scene works not only as an action setpiece but as a demonstration of Peter’s strongest power: his perseverance. Peter will never stop trying, even if all the odds are against him. Spider-Man is so relatable because he makes multiple mistakes and spends his time trying to fix them. But the point is, he will always try, and the train scene is the perfect representation of Spider-Man’s essence.

After making her screen debut in 1989, Sandra Oh has enjoyed a remarkable career in both film and television. Although the versatile talent and 12-time Emmy nominated actress is best known for her iconic roles as Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy and Eve Polastri on Killing Eve, Oh has also worked with some of the finest movie directors, including Alexander Payne, Steven Soderbergh, Mina Shum, John Cameron Mitchell, and more.

As fans continue to enjoy Oh’s new hit Netflix sitcom The Chair, it’s worth recollecting her best movie moments for those who want to see more of the talented actress on the big screen.
10 Defendor (2009): 6.8
Tumblr media
Peter Stebbings’ dark offbeat superhero comedy Defendor stars Oh as Dr. Ellen Park, a psychiatrist who gives hilarious facial and verbal reactions to the outlandish story relayed to her by Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson), an ordinary man moonlighting as a vigilante crime fighter.
Cut from the same genre-bucking, irreverent cloth as James Gunn’s Super, once Arthur confesses his secret life to Dr. Park, she convinces the judge to go easy on him and allow him to continue his heroic activity. When tragedy strikes, Oh shows how much heartfelt pathos she can portray by attending a touching ceremony for her patient.
9 Under The Tuscan Sun (2003): 6.8
Tumblr media
Written and directed by the late Audrey Wells, Under the Tuscan Sun is a delightfully uplifting rom-com about Frances (Diane Lane), a writer who ups and leaves her life in San Francisco to live in Tuscany after discovering her husband’s infidelity. Oh plays Patti, Frances’ best friend who encourages her to travel to Italy.
RELATED: Sandra Oh – 10 Best Roles, Ranked (According To Rotten Tomatoes)
In addition to the gorgeous locations, breezy tone, and rich cinematography, Oh adds complexity to the story as Patti, a lesbian expecting a child even after her lover Grace (Kate Walsh) has left her. It’s Patti’s visit to Tuscany when she’s nine months pregnant that helps Frances find the courage to pursue true love despite the painful past.
8 Double Happiness (1994): 7.0
Tumblr media
Oh made her feature film debut in Mina Shum’s must-see coming-of-age tale Double Happiness, in which she plays the lead role of Chinese-Canadian Jade Li. The intensely personal semiautobiographical drama shows how divided Jade is between her traditional Chinese upbringing and her modern Canadian lifestyle.
With a natural performance by Oh matched with the authentic, well-observed writing of Shum, the movie is a universally relatable tale of a person grappling with their own identity while trying to appease the expectations of loved ones. In her first film performance, Oh won the Genie Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, proving what a titanic talent she has been from the start.
7 Rabbit Hole (2010): 7.0
Tumblr media
John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole is a bruising account of a family dealing with the death of a young child at the hands of a teenage driver. Nicole Kidman gives a memorable and towering performance as Becca, a mournful mother who begins to find solace by interacting with Jason (Miles Teller), the driver who accidentally took her son’s life.
Although she has a smaller supporting role, Oh plays Gabby, a fellow grieving parent who helps Howie (Aaron Eckhart) deal with his loss at the group therapy sessions he and Becca attend. With profound empathy for Howie, she becomes instrumental in his healing process.
6 Meditation Park (2017): 7.1
Tumblr media
Twenty-three years after working with Mina Shum for the first time, Oh reunited with the filmmaker for the sweet-natured drama Meditation Park in 2017. The story concerns Maria Wang (Pei-Pei Cheng), an aging woman in the throes of an existential crisis upon suspecting her husband’s infidelity. Oh plays Maria’s daughter Ava, a mother of two who encourages Maria to reconcile with her estranged brother ahead of his wedding and break free from her husband’s hold.
RELATED: Asian-American Movies to Watch If You Loved Crazy Rich Asians
As another trenchant glimpse at the immigrant experience and a statement about the importance of women finding their own voice, Shum’s film is tender, touching, and triumphant.
5 Hard Candy (2005): 7.1
Tumblr media
David Slade’s Hard Candy is a deeply unnerving glimpse at a predatory pedophile (Patrick Wilson) getting his just deserts when a teenager (Elliot Page) tricks, traps, and tortures him in his apartment. Oh plays the man’s neighbor, Judy Tokuda, admitting she only took the role due to her working relationship with Page, a fellow Canadian she worked with on Wilby Wonderful the year prior.
With most of the action set inside the inescapable apartment, the visceral terror of the violence that Hayley (Page) exacts on Jeff (Wilson) is met by the suffocating sense of claustrophobia, making for a really upsetting experience. However, the hugely satisfying conclusion helps atone for the squeamish and uncomfortable moments of carnage.
4 Last Night (1998): 7.2
Tumblr media
The most unheralded of Oh’s top films happens to be Last Night, a mordant pitch-black comedy about the impending apocalypse and the rag-tag band of Canadians with differing views on how to react. With the end of the world set to strike at midnight, Sandra (Oh) tries to make it out of her stranded position in Toronto and reunite with her husband, Duncan (David Cronenberg). One bad thing after another ensues.
Weird, wild, and ultimately winning, Last Night boasts writer/director Don McKellar’s signature brand of dark humor and anarchic energy. As such, the film has become an unforgettable cult classic among those who’ve seen it.
3 Raya And The Last Dragon (2021): 7.4
Tumblr media
With great respect and honor for the rich historical traditions of Southeast Asia, Raya and the Last Dragon is one of Disney’s most beloved recent animated movies. Sandra Oh lends her voice to the commanding role of Virana, the Fang chieftess and mother of Raya’s main rival, Namaari (Gemma Chan).
RELATED: Raya And The Last Dragon – What The Voice Actors Look Like In Real Life
With a moving story, spellbinding animation, and characters never before seen, Raya and the Last Dragon continue to soar in the hearts and minds of viewers.
2 Sideways (2004): 7.5
Tumblr media
Directed by her then-husband Alexander Payne, Oh demonstrated her hilarious comedic chops in the indie darling Sideways, a character study of a failing writer at an existential crossroads. The boozy road trip follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), an uptight novelist, and his lecherous pal Jack (Thomas Hayden Church), as they hit Santa Barbara wine country on a tasting tour.
Praised for its excellent performances and light tonal touch between comedy and drama, Oh gives a standout turn as Stephanie, a cool sommelier who has a steamy love affair with Jack (whom she does not know has a fiancee). When she finds out, she goes absolutely ballistic in one of the movie’s funniest moments. The story is so sharply penned that it won an Oscar for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay.
1 The Red Violin (1998): 7.6
Tumblr media
Despite playing a bit role as Madame Ming in the fifth and final chapter of The Red Violin, the ambitious epic ranks among Sandra Oh’s most well-received movie to date. The film traces a famed 17th-century Violin from its creation in Italy to its auction in modern-day Montreal, and all that the instrument endured in creating some of the most beautiful music the world has ever heard.
Praised for its sumptuous set decorations and costume designs, Oscar-winning original music, intelligent story, and a throwback style of filmmaking that calls to mind the grand epics of the past, the resonance of The Red Violin is still felt today.

From now until this coming Saturday, PC players can claim the seminal Far Cry 3 for free, courtesy of a giveaway from Ubisoft. Developed by Ubisoft Montréal, the crew behind Splinter Cell and Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 hit stores in late 2012 for PC and seventh-generation consoles. The dynamic open-world gameplay, exploration, and Heart of Darkness-inspired story captivated millions of players, yet the villainous Vaas is what keeps the title in the conversation nearly a decade later.
Actor Michael Mando, now known for Orphan Black and Better Call Saul, brought Vaas to life, essentially drafting the blueprint for Far Cry villains that would follow in his stead. Far Cry 4 dropped players into the world of the eccentric Pagan Min, played by Troy Baker. Greg Bryk took lead as Far Cry 5’s Joseph Seed, a David Koresh-like cult leader whose charisma proved equal parts fascinating and unsettling. The brand’s sixth mainline entry arrives this fall, complete with a tyrannical antagonist, Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad fame. In preparation for the next adventure, some players may want to revisit the franchise’s inflection point.

By visiting the “Giveaway” page on Ubisoft‘s official website, Ubisoft Connect PC players can download free access to Far Cry 3. This deal for the open-world first-person adventure will last from today, September 7, through September 11 at 1:30 AM local time. Those who don’t already have a Ubisoft Connect account need only to register should they choose to take advantage of the limited-time free offer.
Tumblr media
This free offer arguably couldn’t have gone live at a better time, considering the impending rollout of Far Cry 6. Like Far Cry 3 before it, the sixth mainline installment takes place in a tropical environment, though the franchise’s newest setting obviously took cues from real-world Cuba.
Far Cry 3 placed players in the role of Jason Brody, a young man vacationing in the fictional Rook Islands with his brother, girlfriend, and a small group of friends. What starts as a fun trip quickly morphs into a twisted game of survival for Jason and his loved ones. By the end of it all, Jason stands transformed, a new man whose fate rests in the hands of a deceptively simple player-based decision.

In stories about growing up for audiences who are growing up themselves, a strong main character is a necessity. Coming-of-age stories have been around for centuries and have always been popular in cinema, from the days of James Dean to the modern world of Netflix originals.
Related: 10 Of The Best Coming Of Age Movies Everyone Needs To See
While there are many elements of coming-of-age movies that work together to create one timeless tale, such as the soundtrack and shooting locations, the key is a lead protagonist with whom the viewer can wholly identify and empathize. Over the years, there have been some truly impressive young actors who nailed this brief and delivered performances that will forever stand out in their careers.
10 Nick Robinson – The Kings Of Summer (2013)
Tumblr media
In a modern coming-of-age tale for fans of Stand By Me (1986), Nick Robinson stars as Joe, a teenager frustrated with his father’s micromanagement. To escape his smothering suburban life, he invites his best friend and an unusual new acquaintance to build a house in the woods and live off the land.
With humor as this movie’s crowning glory alongside breathtaking shots of the Midwest, Robinson demonstrates his acting range in an impressive feature film debut. He manages to effortlessly keep up with comedic veterans like Nick Offerman and Marc Evan Jackson but also demonstrates control and solemnity in the movie’s tenser moments.
9 Thomas Mann – Me And Earl And The Dying Girl (2015)
Tumblr media
Greg is an unusual choice for a story’s main character, and Thomas Mann captures his socially awkward nature but chameleon-like behavior effortlessly. Although Greg has made it his mission to “remain on low-key good terms” with every student in school, he struggles to see outside of himself until he becomes friends with terminally ill Rachel (Olivia Cooke).
Related: 10 Best Coming Of Age Comedy Dramas Like Juno
Greg’s development is displayed with as much poise as such a gauche character can be afforded, from seeming emotionally blank to succumbing to grief in Rachel’s room. Opposite Nick Offerman and other great talents in Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, Mann’s comedic delivery, both verbal and physical, is truly something to behold and never wanes.
8 Elliot Page – Juno (2007)
Tumblr media
Juno is the blueprint for American Independent cinema, primarily for its Oscar-winning script and unconventional story of teen pregnancy. With a host of celebrated actors surrounding them, Elliot Page shines in what is arguably their most memorable and beloved role.
The offbeat comedy and sarcastic quips of Juno is one for the textbooks, and Elliot carries it with ease from start to finish; the odd vocabulary tossed around rolls as effortlessly as standard English off their tongue. They may appear unimposing in stature, but they dominate every scene with wit and hilarious delivery to make not only an unforgettable movie but a memorable main character.
7 Patrick Fugit – Almost Famous (2000)
Tumblr media
Aspiring writer William is something of a wallflower amongst the larger-than-life personalities of the band Stillwater and transfixing roadie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), but he manages to hold his own and becomes somebody on whom they can all rely. Similarly, Patrick Fugit could have shrunk next to the more experienced actors beside him, but he triumphs.
The fresh-faced actor brings shining optimism and gentleness to a story of wild parties and volatile emotions. He captures William’s level-headed nature and wisdom beyond his years while still exuding the excitement of a newcomer to the rock and roll scene, perfectly balancing youth and innocence with shrewdness and morality.
6 Dustin Hoffman – The Graduate (1967)
Tumblr media
A timeless tale of disillusionment in the face of change, The Graduate is fondly remembered for its incredible soundtrack from Simon and Garfunkel and the iconic affair with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Besides that, in a career-launching role, Dustin Hoffman proves his mettle as a force to be reckoned with onscreen.
Despite having an affair with a much older woman (and later falling for her daughter), Benjamin is a graceless and self-conscious leading man, and Nichols cast Hoffman with the belief that he had the perfect demeanor for the role. Between his personality and superb acting ability, Hoffman pulls off a memorable performance and is one of the main reasons why The Graduate has become a classic to stand the test of time.
5 Miles Teller – The Spectacular Now (2013)
Tumblr media
To bring to life hard-partying Sutter from Tim Tharp’s novel of the same name, the correct actor was called upon. Miles Teller oozes charm in this role and makes it easy to understand how Sutter has made it through life without a thought for the future since everything comes easily to him at the moment.
Besides being the life of the party and effortlessly sweet, Sutter is a young alcoholic who, below the surface, realizes that he is sabotaging his future, and Teller does a marvelous job of exploring this side to the endearing protagonist. The serious self-deprecation that follows reuniting with his absent father, who is a vision of Sutter’s own future, is relayed masterfully and leaves the audience in awe of his performance.
4 Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird (2017)
Tumblr media
Star Saoirse Ronan had a number of stellar movies under her belt before Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, with her first Oscar nomination at the age of thirteen only the beginning of an illustrious career. Her range sets her apart from other young actresses in the game, spanning from sci-fi to period drama to raw, coming-of-age movies such as this.
The main character of this tale is anything but meek. Ronan is strong-willed and assured in the role and explores the everyday highs and lows of growing up while cultivating believable onscreen relationships in a way that can place any viewer right alongside her in Sacramento, which feels more like home the longer that you watch her senior year progressing.
3 Greta Gerwig – Frances Ha (2012)
Tumblr media
A coming-of-age movie for people who are already of age, Frances Ha chronicles a woman’s journey into adulthood as, while she has technically grown up, it is clear that she’s “not a real person yet”. While most movies of the genre take place in high school, this one takes place in New York as Frances struggles to realize her dream as a dancer, maintain her relationships, and generally get by as a functioning adult.
Related: Greta Gerwig’s 10 Best Movies (According To IMDB)
In another collaboration between Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, the leading lady fits this character like a glove and harnesses the youthful spirit of teenage coming-of-age movies to prove that growing up doesn’t stop when you leave high school. It is an honest depiction of young adult life in that, really, nobody knows what they are doing.
2 Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Tumblr media
In one of his best movies Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars as young Elio in a story of young love in 1980s Italy. He is both charming and bashful, causing the viewer to fall in love with him even faster than Oliver does, and he manages to convey so much heart and recognizable pain that the extent of his acting ability is never in question.
While Chalamet brilliantly inspires empathy for Elio’s confusion and inner turmoil throughout his relationship with Oliver, his final performance during the credits is a masterclass in understated yet powerful acting, as we watch the cycle of Elio’s heartbreak and are left reeling from his final, heart-rending glance directly into the camera.
1 Logan Lerman – The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
Tumblr media
At only 20 years old, Logan Lerman delivers one of the most honest and moving portrayals of adolescence in modern-day cinema. For an actor who has had widely varying roles, such as a heroic demigod and a plucky rancher’s son, an introverted character like Charlie could have been difficult to embody, but Lerman does so with an awe-inspiring grace.
Lerman’s presentations of depression and trauma are never extravagant; his performance is highly effective using mostly subtle speech and action. He beautifully showcases Charlie’s innocence and love for his friends and keeps a powerful persona waiting behind a meek exterior to offer one of the greatest portrayals of a coming-of-age character that cinema has seen.

WARNING! Major SPOILERS ahead for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The Ten Rings have been part of the MCU since its beginning, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings finally reveals its full origin, along with that of its founder and leader, The Mandarin. The Ten Rings were among the first antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with one of their cells kidnapping and injuring Tony Stark before providing him with the catalyst to turn his life around and become the superhero, Iron Man. Since then, The Ten Rings have had a series of small, yet notable appearances in MCU material, but Shang-Chi is the first properly to properly depict the mysterious and deadly organization.
The Ten Rings were seemingly the villains of 2013’s Iron Man 3, but the real villains turned out to be Aldrich Killian and his corrupt think tank, AIM. Killian and AIM appropriated the iconography of The Ten Rings and had washed-up actor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) masquerade and pretend to be a warlord when he was, in fact, a fake interpretation of The Mandarin. This successfully covered up Killian’s Extremis experiments, but infuriated the actual Mandarin and caused the warlord to step out of the shadows and seek revenge. Thanks to the Marvel one-shot All Hail The King, the MCU established that the real Ten Rings were led by a man known as The Mandarin, and he was far more dangerous than the MCU had previously implied.
Related: Why SHIELD Wasn’t Aware Of & Didn’t Try To Stop The Mandarin
Shang-Chi effectively recontextualizes the terrorist group with a particular focus on their leader, The Mandarin, aka Xu Wenwu. A truly legendary figure who lives up to his seemingly exaggerated reputation, Wenwu’s humanity and complexity resulted in him being one of the MCU’s most compelling villains, especially when juxtaposed with his incredible powers and near-immortality. Although it took three phases of buildup, The Ten Rings and the true Mandarin were worth the wait, and with the Ten Rings continuing to exist by the end of Shang-Chi, the organization will continue to menace the world as they have for over a millennium.
Tumblr media
The Ten Rings began with The Mandarin, aka Xu Wenwu. Wenwu’s exact age is unknown, but he may have discovered his signature ten bracelet-like rings before the Middle Ages. Legends say that Wenwu discovered the rings in either a tomb or a crater, but in any case, they extended his lifespan, allowing him to remain in his physical and mental prime well into the 21st century. The powerful Ten Rings also provided him with fantastic physical powers, allowing him to annihilate armies of his enemies single-handedly. Wenwu’s intelligence and wisdom, augmented by his longevity, soon inspired followers with undying loyalty to their leader.
The Ten Rings quickly grew in size and influence, gaining followers across the world for entire generations. From the shadows, The Ten Rings killed, stole, and manipulated as needed to influence world history. Jackson Norriss, the Ten Rings member who kidnapped Trevor Slattery, acknowledged the scope of the organization, referring to it as a faith. The description is fitting, considering the criminal empire’s sheer age and influence, not to mention its seemingly immortal leader, with even SHIELD and The Avengers unaware of its full breadth. . The Mandarin briefly took a break from leading his criminal empire upon meeting Ying Li and starting a family with her. Her tragic death, however, sends Wenwu back into the life of a warlord, and thus The Ten Rings’ sinister machinations resumed.
Tumblr media
The Ten Rings’ first appearance in the MCU was in 2008’s Iron Man, in which an Afghanistan-based Ten Rings cell kidnapped Tony Stark. Upon building his Mark I Iron Man suit, Tony fought his way through their forces and escaped captivity. This cell’s forces were defeated once again by Iron Man, now in his advanced Mark III suit. Stark thwarted their attempts to use his stolen weaponry and rescued numerous civilians in the process. The cell was later betrayed by Obadiah Stane, who had their leader, Raza, and the rest of the cell’s operatives executed. After Iron Man, The Ten Rings had numerous minor appearances in MCU properties.
Related: Shang-Chi Ending Explained: 6 Biggest Questions, Answered
In Iron Man 2, Ivan Vanko is able to receive fake documents from a Ten Rings operative, thus allowing him to travel to Monaco and fulfil his ambition of killing Tony Stark. The fact that the Ten Rings was keen on killing Tony Stark is nothing new, however. The Ten Rings also appear in an Iron Man 2 prequel comic, along with similar promotional one-shot comics for The Avengers and Iron Man 3, where Ten Rings operatives are defeated by Black Widow and the recast War Machine, respectively. Vladimir Ranskahov, a Russian mobster featured in the well-received and critically acclaimed Marvel’s Daredevil season 1, is affiliated with The Ten Rings, as evidenced by their symbol tattooed on his arm. Similarly, a member of the Ten Rings shadowy organization is responsible for accompanying Mitchell Carson and his Hydra enforcers in 2015’s Ant-Man, before they are swiftly and soundly defeated by Scott Lang.
The Ten Rings and The Mandarin are the main antagonists of Shang-Chi, finally putting the organization at the forefront of an MCU property without any twists or turns such as those seen in Iron Man 3. In addition to revealing the leader and origins, Shang-Chi shows the Ten Rings’ most elite members, such as Razor Fist, Death Dealer, and Shang-Chi himself in his youth. The Mandarin perishes at the end of the film but is quickly replaced by his daughter, Xu Xialing. As the new leader of The Ten Rings, Xialing is now in charge of perhaps the MCU’s most dangerous and influential crime organization, and although Shang-Chi implies that his sister will dismantle their criminal operations, this remains to be seen in future MCU stories.
Tumblr media
In Marvel’s mainstream comic universe, The Mandarin and The Ten Rings have vastly different origins. The Mandarin, whose identity is unknown, discovered ten rings of alien origin, each one being worn on a different finger and granting him a different superpower. With his genius intellect and newfound superpowers, The Mandarin soon became the archnemesis of Iron Man. The Ten Rings, however, originated in the MCU but were introduced into the comics continuity in Ironheart’s comics, which starred Riri Williams, a new Marvel hero with similar armored suits to Tony Stark’s. The Ten Rings of Marvel’s comic universe are not affiliated with the classic version of The Mandarin. Given the popularity of the MCU’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, however, the two may be connected someday.

Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 director Christopher McQuarrie has shared a behind-the-scenes photo of actress Pom Klementieff showing off her flexibility. After directing 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, McQuarrie helmed franchise high point Mission: Impossible – Fallout. McQuarrie and Tom Cruise’s IMF super-spy Ethan Hunt will return in a seventh installment set for a September 2022 release date. In addition to Cruise, the sequel will see the return of Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Frederick Schmidt. Henry Czerny will also reprise his role as former IMF Director Eugene Kittridge from the first film. The cast will be joined by newcomers including Hayley Atwell, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss and Pom Klementieff in unknown roles.
Originally, Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were supposed to shoot back-to-back with release dates scheduled for 2021 and 2022. However, the coronavirus pandemic struck right in the middle of filming and significantly delayed production. Regardless, the production has managed to incorporate locations as diverse as Norway, Rome, and the UK, setting up the most anticipated installments in the franchise. The upcoming two Mission: Impossible films are set to feature more death-defying stunts and an incredibly prepared cast, as is evident in photos shared on social media.
Related: Why Kittridge’s Mission: Impossible 7 Return Is So Exciting
McQuarrie recently took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes photo of Klementieff from Mission: Impossible 7. The image depicts the French-Canadian actress’ impressive flexibility, as she easily holds one leg up straight in the air. Alongside the image, McQuarrie included the caption “Bonne chance…” meaning “good luck” in French. Check it out below:
Click here to view the original post
Klementieff is best known for playing Guardians of the Galaxy’s Mantis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Outside of Marvel, however, Klementieff has made a name for herself in indie films like Ingrid Goes West and the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems, and television series such as Black Mirror. When she was cast in Mission: Impossible 7, McQuarrie referred to her character as being a “femme fatale,” but further details are yet to be confirmed.
While it isn’t yet certain, it would seem Mission: Impossible 7 is the beginning of the end for Ethan Hunt. It’s worth noting that Cruise will be over 60 when Mission: Impossible 8 finally opens in theaters. After accomplishing “impossible” missions for almost three decades, it’s hard to imagine the actor attempting increasingly dangerous stunts forever. The seventh film is set to see him drive a motorcycle off a cliff before pulling a parachute in a highly anticipated stunt involving a train. That said, from what is known about the upcoming Mission: Impossible films, there’s no doubt that both Cruise and the rest of the cast will be in top form on screen. As for Klementieff, whether she will play a hero, villain, or something in between, her role in Mission: Impossible 7 is sure to cement her status as a superstar.

The Abomination (Tim Roth) may have a bigger future in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe than fans realized. Marvel already announced that Abomination and his alter ego, Emil Blonsky, was cast in She-Hulk on Disney+. However, the gamma-powered monster’s surprise appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings indicates the Abomination will have an even greater presence in the MCU than first thought.
Abomination has only made one MCU appearance in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk but the massive brute has the distinction of being the second supervillain in the MCU after Jeff Bridges’ Obediah Stane/Iron Monger in Iron Man. Abomination’s human side, Emil Blonsky, was a British Royal Marine working for General Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt). Ross enhanced Blonsky with the Super Soldier Serum but he was still no match for the Hulk (Edward Norton). Blonsky then infused himself with Bruce Banner’s gamma-irradiated blood, which mutated Blonsky into the creature dubbed the Abomination. However, the Hulk defeated Abomination in Harlem and escaped capture. The Abomination was apprehended and held in cryo-stasis within S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Alaska facility called the Vault. That was the last time fans saw the Abomination, although he was mentioned in the Marvel One-Shot titled The Consultant. The World Security Council intended to release Blonsky so he could be part of the Avengers but that plan was foiled in favor of the Hulk joining the Avengers instead.
Related: The Avengers: What If The Abomination Had Been Recruited
Shang-Chi shows the Abomination cage fighting against Doctor Strange’s Wong (Benedict Wong), Doctor Strange’s partner as part of Xialing’s underground fight club. In the MCU timeline, it’s been about 15 years since Abomination was last seen in Phase 1 and while he was left in the cryo-prison The Vault, he’s now in the Raft, as briefly shown when Wong takes him back in the wake of their fight. How that change of location happened is unclear, but since Tim Roth is also reprising Blonsky and Abomination in She-Hulk, it may be revealed when he eventually meets Banner’s cousin, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), and play what’s been described as “a significant role” in the show. The Abomination was also, of course, a major league villain who possesses Hulk-levels of power, making him “a 30-megaton nuke” on the loose, in Secretary of State Ross’ verbiage.
Tumblr media
As surprised as fans were to learn the Abomination will appear in Shang-Chi, Tim Roth may have been equally astonished to have been contacted by Marvel after so many years. There were initial plans to include the Abomination in Avengers: Age of Ultron but those obviously never came to fruition. In a 2017 Reddit AMA, Roth was asked if he will ever return to the MCU and he replied, “I don’t think Marvel will ever use me again, but it would be fun.” Because of the Hulk’s complicated film rights, which are owned by Universal Pictures, there are no more Hulk solo movies on the horizon. The advent of She-Hulk Disney+ TV show allows Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk/Bruce Banner to continue playing major supporting roles in other MCU properties and it opened the door for Tim Roth’s long-awaited comeback as the Abomination.
Whether the Abomination will further appear in the MCU is unclear, but there are questions off the back of how Wong interacts with the hulking monster. That seems to suggest that Wong has been training him and that the pair have an established camaraderie, rather than being enemies. Following on from the Phase One plan to bring him in as an Avenger, Abomination could potentially be a possibility for the next iteration of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers 5 and he could also be recruited by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis Dreyfuss) to join the new team she recruited U.S. Agent John Walker (Wyatt Russell) for in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Since there’s a relationship with Wong already, some fans speculate that Abomination could possibly impact Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Either way, the Abomination is on the verge of a major comeback after sitting out MCU Phases 2 and 3.

Samurai Jack creator Genddy Tartakovsky has released a striking piece of Rick and Morty crossover art in preparation for the show’s season 5 finale, “Rickmurai Jack.” Tartakovsky is a modern legend of the animation world, having worked on acclaimed shows like Dexter’s Laboratory, Batman: The Animated Series, The Powerpuff Girls, and Star Wars: Clone Wars. Tartakovsky also has a longstanding professional relationship with both Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, where Rick and Morty airs.
Rick and Morty is no stranger to crossovers and pop culture homages. In fact, the series practically lives off of the various spoofs and references that make up its various episodes. The titles of the episodes often reflect those references directly, generally with an added “Rick” or “Morty” for good measure. The Rick and Morty season 5 finale has been of particular interest to fans because of its delayed release and two-part structure. And with a title like “Rickurai Jack,” it promises to have some unique influences.

In preparation for the Rick and Morty season 5 finale’s release on the evening of September 5, Adult Swim has shared a new piece of official crossover art from Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky. The piece depicts Jack meeting an altered Rick and Morty, drawn in Tartakovsky’s iconic visual style. It embraces both the striking aesthetic of Samurai Jack with the humor of Rick and Morty in a fun way, with a caption from Adult Swim declaring that “This crossover hits different.”

Will some of Tartakovsky’s animation actually make it into the Rick and Morty season 5 finale? It’s certainly not outside the realm of possible for a show that is constantly breaking the fourth wall. Adult Swim has had some interesting promos in the lead-up to the finale’s premiere, including a live-action teaser featuring Christopher Lloyd as Rick and Jaeden Martell as Morty. That could all just be marketing, but it’s possible that these different aesthetics could make their way into the two-part finale, which would be especially exciting to see.
Overall, Rick and Morty season 5 has had a bit more of a lukewarm response than previous seasons of the show. A few episodes have been criticized for wallowing too much in low brow humor and eschewing the more serious and emotional storylines that the series has been praised for. It’s still one of the best shows on television, but for many, the latest season hasn’t been up to the high expectations the series has set for itself. Maybe the Rick and Morty season 5 finale can give fans and critics what they’ve been waiting for when it premieres on Adult Swim at 11:00 p.m. ET on September 5.

On the finish of Reservoir Canine, Mr. White (Harvey Keitel) is shot by the cops. Nonetheless, a fan principle means that the cops shoot him earlier than he fires his gun. Quentin Tarantino exploded onto the scene in 1992 together with his crime thriller Reservoir Canine, and the film shortly turned a cult basic. The movie incorporates quite a few traits which have change into synonymous with Tarantino’s must-see motion pictures (together with Pulp Fiction, Kill Invoice, and Django Unchained), from the non-linear storytelling and excessive bursts of violence, to loads of popular culture references and quotable dialogue.
Reservoir Canine facilities on the aftermath of a diamond heist gone flawed. The thieves regroup at their safehouse and try to piece collectively what occurred, however complicating issues is that one in all them is an undercover cop. Mr. Orange (Tim Roth), having been shot throughout the getaway, has been mendacity on the ground slowly bleeding to dying, with Mr. White caring for him. The gang finally activates one another in a deadly gunfight, whereas Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi) makes an attempt to flee. Mr. White, himself now shot, crawls over to Mr. Orange, who confesses that he’s a cop.
Associated: Reservoir Canine: Each Character’s Colour & That means Defined
The speculation (by way of Reddit) units out the mindset of Mr. White and his friendship with Mr. Orange, whom he sees as a “good child“. He doesn’t need him to die and defends him in opposition to his fellow criminals earlier than his confession. Subsequently, whereas he put his gun to Mr. Orange’s head upon realizing his betrayal, he hesitates and reconsiders pulling the set off. In the meantime, the cops arrive, seeing the our bodies of three thieves and a cop, and a felony holding a gun to Mr. Orange’s head. Citing the symbolism of the film’s pictures and concepts of police violence and brutality, the idea argues that within the warmth of the second one in all them panics and fires at Mr. White. The opposite cops additionally open fireplace, killing Mr. White, whereas Mr. Orange survives.
The speculation is attention-grabbing, and Tarantino’s selection to zoom in on Mr. White’s face (leaving Mr. Orange and the gun out of body) provides ambiguity to the scene. On first viewing, there’s potential confusion over who shoots first. Nonetheless, there’s proof that Mr. White shoots Mr. Orange first, to which the cops reply by taking pictures Mr. White. Whereas out of body, Mr. White’s arm strikes barely in time with the sound of the primary gunshot, seemingly as a reflex of his gun being discharged. There may be then a beat earlier than the remaining gunfire, which comes collectively in a single flurry. This coincides with Mr. White collapsing out of body, whereas the primary shot leaves him nonetheless in his sitting place.
The largest piece of proof in opposition to the idea nevertheless is detailed in Tarantino’s script itself. As soon as the police have entered the constructing and informed Mr. White to drop his gun (pointed at Mr. Orange’s head), the script reads; “Mr. White appears to be like up at them, smiles, PULLS the set off. BANG. We hear a BURST of SHOTGUN FIRE. Mr. White is BLOWN out of body, leaving it empty.”
This would appear to place to relaxation any doubt that Tarantino meant Mr. White to shoot Mr. Orange, with the cops then opening fireplace in response. Aside from the smile referred to within the script (Keitel maintains a hard and fast grimace whereas groaning on the ache and betrayal), the film matches the scene as written. Whereas there may have been some totally different decisions made both on the day (corresponding to Good Man Eddie’s destiny) or throughout the enhancing course of, it’s unlikely that Tarantino would have essentially modified the finale of Reservoir Canine as he initially conceived it.

Within the comics, Dr. Robotnik not solely as soon as roboticized Sonic, however Knuckles the Echidna volunteered to change into a robotic to beat him, resulting in a fully epic battle between the 2 mates.
Starting in difficulty #39, Sonic mentions that the most effective likelihood of defeating Robotnik is to get himself roboticized, and though his plan is vetoed by the Freedom Fighters, Robotnik efficiently beats Sonic by turning the hedgehog right into a mechanized robotic that very day and unleashes his new creation on Sonic’s mates. When their final hope of defeating Mecha Sonic is dashed upon Knuckles’ preliminary defeat firstly of the Sonic & Knuckles: Mecha Insanity particular difficulty, the identical Freedom Fighters who rejected Sonic’s aforementioned concept comply with roboticize Knuckles utilizing an older model of the Roboticizer they’d swiped from Robotnik earlier than.

Throughout the epic face-off, Mecha Sonic seems to win when he delivers a calculated punch that sends his mechanized foe flying within the air in a trajectory that can land him in an space of Dr. Robotnik’s metropolis that can destroy him within the ensuing explosion. However Mecha Knuckles shortly creates a magnetic area that forces Mecha Sonic to connect to him as they each barrel in direction of their doom. Mecha Knuckles would have undoubtedly been destroyed if not for 2 issues; Sonic’s true self took over on the final second, compelling the hedgehog to take the total brunt of the explosion, and Knuckles the Echidna’s older expertise making him weaker. Sonic survives the combat and was in a position to retain some semblance of his thoughts earlier than his roboticization due to the ability he acquired after gathering his one billionth ring in difficulty #35.
Each this surprising victory and storyline shocked readers on the time for quite a few causes. All through the start of Archie’s now discontinued sequence, each Sonic and Knuckles steadily battled one another over frequent misunderstandings. However each confrontation all the time led to a draw, together with their epic conflict within the monumental Tremendous Sonic vs. Hyper Knuckles particular difficulty when a zone crammed with greater than sufficient rings and Chaos Emeralds for the 2 to rework explodes as a result of quantity of power their tremendous types generate, chopping the combat quick. However when Mecha Sonic and Knuckles collide within the aptly named Mecha Insanity particular difficulty, there’s a clear victor.
Moreover, the truth that Sonic is roboticized is definitely a feat by itself as the method of roboticization serves because the villain’s most deadly weapon towards the Blue Blur and his mates for a large chunk of the sequence. Sonic struggles with the Roboticizer’s results on a private stage within the early points as Robotnik efficiently turns his Uncle Chuck, his dad and mom, and his canine into robots. Though they largely returned again to regular, Sonic’s father Jules isn’t restored to his regular physique. Sonic can also be haunted by one among his worst failures all through the whole lot of the sequence when he saves Bunny Rabbot however solely after her roboticization had already begun, forcing her to dwell as a partial robotic for years.
With this background, it is no shock why IDW’s rendition of Archie’s roboticization often called the Metallic Virus serves because the reboot’s greatest and most thrilling saga. As a substitute of being an precise machine like the Roboticizer, the Metallic Virus is a synthetically concocted plague that transforms life into metallic zombies known as and even partially impacts Sonic the Hedgehog like how the Blue Blur is absolutely reworked in Mecha Insanity. Though Archie’s Roboticizer is later destroyed, the sequence continued to introduce new methods wherein Dr. Robotnik may flip lifeforms into robots. Hopefully IDW will do the identical.

The Financial institution Job, a 2008 heist-thriller directed by Roger Donaldson, explores the real-life Lloyds financial institution theft of 1971 which happened on Baker Avenue in London.  The worth of the products that had been stolen in the course of the heist continues to be unknown because the police solely managed to retrieve a small sum. Nonetheless, it’s estimated the full quantity stolen lies between £1.25 and £3 million. The true goal of the Baker Avenue heist stays shrouded in thriller too and this theft nonetheless has many unanswered questions, even fifty years after it occurred.
A part of the rationale why The Financial institution Job, which stars Jason Statham (The Expendables) and Saffron Burrows, was made is the producers wished to disclose to the general public some seemingly never-before recognized truths relating to the story of the theft. The film tells the occasions of the heist and its aftermath in a fashion that’s fictionalized in additional methods than one, most notably relating to the character portrayed within the film and the way they evaluate to the true perpetrators. As an illustration, the person who deliberate the Baker Avenue heist, Anthony Gavin, is just not portrayed within the movie. As a substitute, a fictional girl named Martine Love (Burrows) deliberate the heist and assembles the crew to hold it out.

Anthony Gavin was initially impressed to conduct the heist when he learn The Crimson-Headed League, a brief story written in 1891 by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle in regards to the famed detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson’s try and foil burglars. Gavin and his crew broke into the Lloyds financial institution by tunneling from a close-by retailer they rented and used gelignite – generally known as a blasting jelly – to open a approach up into the financial institution from the bottom. Whereas inside, they communicated through walkie-talkie with a lookout who was stationed on the roof. Sadly, the walkie-talkie’s sign was picked up by Robert Rowlands, an newbie radio fanatic, who referred to as the police to make arrests. Initially, the police did not consider Robert which gave Gavin and the crew sufficient time to go away with the stolen items. It did not take the police lengthy to seek out a few of the suspects however the cash and equipment had been gone without end.
The Financial institution Job alludes to the tactic utilized by the unique burglars however the film model is sort of solely fictionalized. In keeping with the movie, compromising footage of Princess Margaret – who was performed by Vanessa Kirby on The Crown – had been being held in one of many security deposit containers belonging to Trinidadian radical Michael X so MI5 arrange the housebreaking to safe the pictures. This may clarify why the British Authorities issued a D-Discover which censored any press releases in regards to the theft after it occurred and newspapers in regards to the theft are nonetheless being held below embargo on the Nationwide Archives till 2071.
It appears odd the federal government would go to such lengths to cowl up the main points of the theft. Whether or not it had one thing to do with Princess Margaret or another person’s private life, no matter was inside the protection deposit containers at Lloyd’s financial institution in 1971 stays unknown to this present day. The Financial institution Job‘s model of occasions serves so as to add fictionalized taste to what actually occurred that night time in Central London, and it’ll probably be many extra years till the reality is unearthed.
