#like macaroni salad and potato salad and green bean casserole
Text
Whoever gave the foods for that American food poll is clearly either west or east coast. No one from the south would slander good food like that, and no one from the midwest would neglect to mention the atrocities that every aunt or neighbor brings to potlucks. If you’ve suffered thru the mayo and jello based salads and the Frankensteined casseroles, you know they belong on there over grits, biscuits and gravy, and boiled peanuts. Also like, the basic white person from the suburbs meal of boiled/baked chicken, steamed broccoli, and steamed carrots, all with no seasoning…that should honestly have a spot too

Decided it would be fun to make some Sing headcanons for Thanksgiving!!:
(this is just be thinking stuff up as I go mostly, and for fun)
Firstly, Buster Moon would organize the whole event with the help of Miss Crawly and Porsha Crystal. The whole ordeal would be held at Clay Calloway’s house. It’s big enough to deal with everyone’s families together, and it would help Clay deal with leaving his comfort zone and socializing after a long time. Everyone is invited to bring food, homemade or store-bought. It is also worth noting that ever since Clay’s end of hiding, he has made the entrance to his home more visible
In preparations for the party, Buster, with assistance of his trusty assistant Miss Crawly, and old rock-star Clay Calloway, they decorate the abode with lots of fake leaves and pumpkins, and a myriad of handpicked flowers from Clay’s garden. The tables are adorned table rugs and mats. The whole shaboodle. Porsha Crystal played the role of moral support.
When the day finally arrives, here’s what everyone brings:
Buster Moon brings homemade sandwiches. This is the only thing he knows how to confidently make, and he tries not to buy anything because, as he learned from his father, the food made with love is the best food of all. Thus, sandwiches. Additionally, Porsha assisted in making these sandwiches. She really wanted to help out, and Buster did appreciate the assistance. They did have to make a lot of sandwiches, after all.
Clay Calloway wanted to make his special gumbo, but decided against it, as that would be a filling dish itself, and so he decided to work with Miss Crawly to make an assortment of muffins. They tried to account for different people’s different flavor preferences, so they made chocolate chip, banana nut, and blueberry muffins.
Additionally, Clay also decided to go out on a limb and also make hushpuppies. He figured that if anyone was too daunted by all the food, they could just settle for some small finger food, and hushpuppies is one of his favorites. For anyone doesn’t know, hushpuppies are like little balls of cornbread and vegetables. Just imagine a spherical french fry.
For Rosita, she prepared a sweet potato casserole. A lot of sweet potato casserole. She believes that sweet potato pie is one of the best parts of fall, and so she wanted to incorporate that into her dish. In other words, she really likes it, so she chose it.
Gunter, accounting for the possibility of having to feed Rosita’s children, and learning from his previous babysitting experiences, made sure to bring a non-sugary food: rice dressing. It’s not the greatest, but he wanted to try to make something himself, so it’s the thought that counts, really. Besides, it’s not even that bad.
Johnny, Ryan, and Nooshy decided to work together on their dish, producing: Oh, that is just mash potatoes. No, that’s literally it. It’s just potatoes...mashed. They didn’t even peel the skin.
Okay no, I’m kidding don’t worry! They made green bean mashed potatoes, seasoned well, and garnished with a single leaf of basil. Ryan had said that it would make it look fancy, and he’d seen it all the time. The three of them, one brain cell total, decided not only did it make sense, but it was perfect and would be the best dish at the event. It was not, but it was good. You can never go wrong with mash potatoes. They also decided to bring some store-bought cookies, just in case.
The mash potatoes were also made at Johnny’s house, so they were under supervision. This also meant that they were lots of laughs shared around.
As for the Stan, Marcus, and Barry themselves, they each decided to make their own dishes. Marcus decided to go with his ol’ reliable baked macaroni and cheese. Who doesn’t like that? Up next was Stan, who cooked some potato salad, with a little extra mustard, as per his liking (and to the disdain of the rest of the family). Finally, Barry fished out his cooking magazine and decided to make some bacon-pecan cornbread dressing by the book.
Meena wish she could have come, but unfortunately she had other Thanksgivings to go to, but she still prepared a cake, as per her family’s request. She gave the food to Johnny to bring in her stead, and in return he would try to make a plate for her to bring back. The cake in question was a skillfully made pecan pie. Upon telling Johnny what she made, they proceeded to have a conversation about the correct pronunciation of the word pecan. Of course the house residence, plus Ryan and Nooshy, had to be included, so this went on for a while.
Ash isn’t too confident in her abilities, so she decided to bring store-bought wings. An easy win for her, to be sure.
Eddie
Now, if you’ve been closely reading, you might be asking. What about the turkey? YOU FOOL! THERE IS NO TURKEY! *ahem* They uhm. Yeah they forgot the turkey. Woops?
The Moon Crew was a bit disappointed at the missing main meal, but glad nonetheless that (mostly) everyone was able to come together.
I hope y’all enjoyed this post, I forgot how ma-
*knock knock*
“What? Who’s at the door? I thought we had everyone” Inquired the koala.
“I’ll go get it, sir” the old lizard responds, starting to get out of her chair.
“No need, Miss Crawly. The guests should be greeted by the hosts, anyways.” Buster hops off his chair to the floor, making his way to the front door. As he walks past the long table, the  scent of all the different foods pass him, egging everyone on to eat before thanks have been given. Once at the door, adjusting his signature tie, and putting his Host Smile™, the koala opens the door to...
Gasping, the koala’s smile widened and his ears flicked up. “Eddie, what! I thought you said you couldn’t make it”
“Well, I was supposed to go to this fancy ball dinner with Nana, but when I told her about the dinner you wanted me to go to, she decided to let me bail out. She told me to go out and buy a turkey though. Something about you being too cheap to buy one yourself.”
“That hurts, but we did need a turkey. ITS A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE AMEN HALLELUJAH (I’m sorry I’m not great at writing dialogue)
With his boyfriend added to the party, and a newfound turkey, the koala makes his way back to the table. Everyone is flabbergasted at the turkey, and very excited to say the least. They say their thanks and the feast begins.
Post-feast, they head off to do their own activities. Clay, Norman, and Marcus and crew make their way to the living room to watch the pork skin throw-ening. It’s the Redshore Pandas versus the Echo City Cougars.
Johnny, Ryan, Nooshy, and Ash go of to play games in the garden. Johnny keeps making jokes about he’s British and supposedly doesn’t know what Thanksgiving is. Every other remark of this kind by him is returned with a punch in the arm by the lynx. They also are practicing their dance routines by making it a competition.
Rosita was going to wash dishes, but Buster Moon insisted that she enjoy herself, so instead she is sitting outside watching the teens and the piglets, who are having the most chaotic game of tag ever seen. Gunter of course is also joining in.
In the kitchen is Buster, Eddie, and Porsha, picking up the remainings of the supper. Eddie is talking about how the three of them are going to celebrate Christmas this year, since now they have Porsha. Does she even believe in Santa? According to this magic 8 ball I looked up, signs point to no. Jimmy never really bothered to embed the idea into her. She kinda just asked for gifts and received them, no questions asked. They’re thinking of showing Porsha of how the two of them usually celebrate the holidays outside of just gift-giving.
As for Miss Crawly? Well, she’s passed out in the lounge. The first of many who will fall victim to the curse of the Thanksgiving sleepiness.
Okay now I’m done. I was writing this as I go, and I had to look up a ton of stuff because my family usually doesn’t do much for Thanksgiving 😅. We usually just eat and talk and that’s it, so hopefully this stuff made sense. I also forgot how many characters there were, so this took me a while LOL. Partially because I took my nap halfway through. Anyways, I hope y’all had a good holiday.

thanksgiving Day is next week! If you have some ideas for a good meal plan just don’t bring these items to the table
FOOD
17 Dishes You BET NOT Bring to a Black Thanksgiving
You'll be better off bringing paper plates than potato salad with raisins.
By

There are more than a dozen things that are off the table (or should be kept off the table) when it comes to what to bring to Thanksgiving. Or rather...a Black Thanksgiving.
I don’t know what the white folks do over there but over here? We eat sweet potato pies, not pumpkin pies. We eat mac n’ cheese without breadcrumbs. We’d also rather you make one item in its classic recipe versus making it into a casserole.
Black folks stick to the same menu every year and it hasn’t budged for decades now.
If you’re debating on what to bring to Thanksgiving this year, check out this list of 17 things not to bring. And remember: when in doubt, bring the liquor.

Green Bean Casserole
Amongst the several polls I sent out requesting ideas for this list, this abomination was at the top. The only acceptable form of green beans is with smoked turkey neck and potatoes. Why is it a trend to make this a casserole?

3 / 19
List slides
Mashed Potatoes
This may be debatable, but trust...you’ll never find this in my household. We have other things to hold gravy. Enter: rice, dressing, and of course, turkey.

4 / 19
List slides
Potato Salad with Raisins
Matter fact, keep anything you got with raisins in it. Keep ya potato salad, ya pasta salad, macaroni salad and the criminal attempt at a pan of macaroni and cheese if it has raisins. You must do time over this.

List slides
Pumpkin Things
I don’t have anything against pumpkins for the rest of the Fall/Autumn season, but on Thanksgiving? This is strictly a sweet potato household. If I bite into a pie and it’s pumpkin, we might have to fight.

6 / 19
List slides
Creamed Spinach
Why? You’re better of bringing artichoke dip for us to snack on while we wait for the food. No one is putting this on their plate.

7 / 19
List slides
Brussels Sprouts
There’s a specific selection of vegetables that are Thanksgiving-friendly and Brussels sprouts ain’t on the list, sweetheart. Now...if you know how to make them Capital Grille style, you can bring me a pan ;)

List slides
Canned Greens
Since I was a child, I sat in the kitchen snapping green beans and watching my grandmother clean the collards. You think I don’t know the difference between fresh and canned vegetables? Go head...take the risk of being embarrassed by the shady banter of the entire family if you cut corners and bring canned greens.

9 / 19
List slides
Boxed Gravy
Again, we can tell the difference. There are too many leftover greases and turkey juices for you to not be able to make a gravy. Leave that flavorless roux home.

10 / 19
List slides
Fruit Cake
The main desserts include pie, cobblers, banana pudding and maybe a pound cake. If you walk in with a fruit cake, you will also leave with that fruit cake.

List slides
Sugar- or Gluten-Free Sweets
Speaking of desserts, we like sugar. We embrace gluten. Even if you’re trying to be conscious of the one guest who has a dietary restriction, please let the rest of us enjoy ourselves.

List slides
Beyond Meats
On any other day, I will embrace vegan alternatives. But please don’t play with my pork chops and turkey wings.

13 / 19
List slides
Gelatin-Based Oddities
We’re wayyy past that odd 1980s moment when everything edible was put in gelatin. Leave it alone, babes..unless it’s Jell-O shots. Those are always welcome.

14 / 19
List slides
Ambrosia
I just learned that this unicorn vomit had a name. That being said, don’t you even dare.

15 / 19
List slides
Soup
Why?

16 / 19
List slides
Broccoli-Cheddar Whatever
I get it. Tis’ the season to embrace all variations of broccoli-cheddar dishes. But do us a favor and leave your go-to lunch food in the fridge.

17 / 19
List slides
Spaghetti
Are you crazy? Your kids have been eating spaghetti for the past week and that’s what you bring to the feast of feasts?!

18 / 19
List slides
Whatever You Know You’re Not In Charge Of...
Every family has the one relative they can count on for a prominent Thanksgiving dish. If Mama makes the mac n’ cheese every year, please don’t consider this your moment to play Hell’s Kitchen. You will lose.

Serve one of these casseroles as your meatless main for dinner tonight. With only three steps or less, these vegetarian dishes are easy to make. Recipes like our Cheesy Sweet Potato & Black Bean Casserole and Broccoli & Quinoa Casserole are delicious and satisfying choices for dinner. A cozy, cheesy casserole is classic comfort food. We amped up the nutrition by including plenty of nourishing veggies. Black beans provide powerful plant-based protein while the sweet potatoes offer up a healthy dose of vitamin A, an antioxidant important for vision and immunity. This easy egg casserole is filled with spring green vegetables and rustic whole-grain bread. It's perfect for a healthy vegetarian dinner or a springtime brunch. You can assemble it the night before and bake it in the morning when you're ready. This broccoli-quinoa casserole makes a hearty vegetarian main dish. As the quinoa absorbs water and cooks, it creates the perfect amount of steam for cooking the broccoli. The broccoli is crisp-tender and adds texture to contrast with the creamy, cheesy quinoa. Swap in tricolor quinoa, if you prefer. Tomatoes and briny feta cheese form the base of the sauce that coats the pasta in this easy one-pan meal. Enjoy on its own as a vegetarian dinner or top with grilled chicken for some extra protein. This cauliflower casserole is inspired by nachos and stuffed with tender roasted cauliflower, sweet red pepper and brown rice. Salsa helps bind the ingredients together, along with melted cheese. Crushed tortilla chips on top add crunch. Serve with the suggested garnishes, or add your own favorite toppings to complete the dish. This one-pan recipe is the casserole version of spanakopita! It's hearty enough to enjoy as a vegetarian lunch or dinner, yet versatile enough to serve alongside just about any protein. To make it extra creamy, top each serving with a dollop of sour cream. Think of this vegetarian enchilada casserole as a veggie-packed Mexican-inspired lasagna with corn tortillas standing in for the noodles! If your peppers are mild and you like heat, opt for spicy pico de gallo. This easy vegetarian dinner recipe is sure to become a new family favorite. This is the macaroni and cheese recipe that would have been made in the kitchens at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Jefferson first became familiar the creamy, cheesy baked dish of macaroni from his time in Paris and it was enslaved cooks, James Hemings, Peter Hemings, Edith Hern Fossett and Frances Gillette Hern, who prepared this favorite dish over the years. The popularization of this iconic American dish can be traced to Black cooks, like Peter Fossett (the freed son of Edith Hern Fossett), Rufus Estes and Freda De Knight, who helped spread the dish throughout the United States. Learn more about Macaroni and Cheese at Monticello. This ooey-gooey dish has baked-pasta vibes but features protein-packed beans instead of noodles. Look for dried corona beans, a larger, creamy white bean, at natural-foods stores or online. Cannellini are a good substitute. Serve with a green salad and toasted baguette. This cheesy tortellini bake is a dish the whole family will love--it's filled with sweet-tasting marinara, mushrooms and spinach and topped with melted cheese. Complete the meal, plus get in another vegetable serving, by adding a side of broccoli or a small green salad. Cherry tomatoes and mushrooms bake along with goat cheese to form the base of the sauce that cooks the pasta right in the baking dish—no stovetop required. source

Eating tarantulas is a thing from south East Asian countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam or etc. and I only suggested it cause arachnophobia there’s a video on YouTube of two girls cooking a back full and it’s terrifying,
mm gotcha! thanks for sharing anon! /genuine
It's really interesting to me what people eat around the world! This kind of reminds me of a dish in Iceland called hákarl that's fermented shark meat. I wasn't brave enough to try it when I was there, but one of the people in my study abroad did and he was not a fan lol
Also let's point out some weird american foods while we're at it:
- spray cheese (which... I feel like people don't eat that often)
- pb and j sandwiches (i love a pb and j with like... rasberry or hucklebrry jam. but like. it is not a very filling lunch for how popular it is)
- garbage plates, which are a regional food to western NY (specifically rochester). I've never had one, but I've always been curious. It's like fries , hot dogs, burger patties, macaroni salad, cheese, etc all piled on top of each other It'd good drunk food.
- ambrosia salad, which is like... jello, fruit, and whipped cream that's inexplicably always served with the main course at potlucks (but like. only if it's a green or orange. and red ones served with the desserts)
- most casseroles (but im thinking specifically of green bean casseroles. tater tot casseroles, and sweet potato marshmallow casseroles)
- donut burgers. I feel like these are really only seen at state fairs
- and lastly, the general concept of drinking milk with dinner. Idk how common this one is any more, but my parents made us drink milk with dinner growing up. my brother still drinks a ton of milk. i've become lactose intolerant

*disclaimer...things are a bit different now that she and her brother are both in London. They have to celebrate together now, only making Christmas Day instead of Christmas Eve.
TRADITIONS:
Are you a Grinch, or do you enjoy the holidays?: Emilia loves the holidays. She’s got a big family and they’ve got a lot of traditions to uphold. She does a little something special for her birth mom in private.
On which day do you celebrate Christmas?: Christmas eve AND Christmas Day. Everyone gathers in the house for a big breakfast cooked by Mrs. Lefebvre, stragglers from the French are always welcome and included.
Is it a religious celebration or non-denominational?: While her parents do believe in Christianity and it does have a bit of that in there, Emilia could take it or leave it. Growing older, she realized she didn’t believe in religion as much as her family does...not that she’d ever tell them that.
Who do you usually spend the holidays with?: The women at the shelter, the French allies, The Lefebvre family
What does your typical Christmas dinner include?: While turkey is done on Thanksgiving, Christmas includes steaks expertly cooked by Mr. Lefebvre. Her vegan sister hates the idea but it’s four against one and they wouldn’t miss anything for the world. Her mother cooks twice baked potatoes, homemade macaroni and cheese, and a beautiful salad.
Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?: If there are multiple gifts, the kids get to open on Christmas Eve, and then everyone opens Christmas day.
Do you still have a stocking?: At the Lefebvre house? Duh.
Do you still get an Advent Calendar?: They were never big on advent calenders.
Do you leave all of your Christmas shopping until last minute, or are you organized?: Organized. So. Organized.
Do you take charge of the day, or are you the one in the corner sipping Baileys?: While her brother and sister tend to hang back, Emilia is in the kitchen with their mother cooking and working on dinner. She basically works alongside her mother.
Any traditions passed down through the family?: Sitting together and singing Christmas Carols next to the family tree and piano. Usually her father plays and they sing along.
Any weird things your family does that others don’t?: Not that she knows...but most would call her christmas one of the more traditional of the bunch.
Do you go all-out with decorations, or keep it basic?: Emilia personally keeps it pretty basic but her parents should basically be the Lampoons Christmas
Post a picture of what your Christmas tree looks like:
Tumblr media
Do you ever spend the holidays away from home?: Lately she has been since moving to London
Do you like to get a bit tipsy, or is it an alcohol-free zone?:A little buzz is always nice.

Staples in American Cooking
I consider myself something of an amateur cultural anthropologist in that I don’t have a formal degree, but I absolutely love learning about and studying other cultures. I have the utmost respect for these cultures, and one of my favorite ways to learn about them is through their food. Food seems to transcend all barriers (language, religious differences, political differences, regional boundaries, ect.) and it brings people together. It’s a way to celebrate different things. Food makes people happy. For dinner this afternoon I had haluski noodles (a traditional Czech recipe that I will share at the end of this post) for the first time. They were absolutely delicious! It was like taking a bite out of another country, so I decided to share a list of American cooking staples for anyone who is from somewhere else and might be interested to learn about our cooking the way I love learning about yours.
Please note that, just like anywhere else, staple ingredients vary from region to region, but overall, these are the most popular. Also, this is not meant to be a comprehensive list; I’m sure there are things I’ve forgotten, so please reblog with your additions.
-Chicken (we eat all parts of the chicken, but breasts and wings seem to be the most popular)
-Beef (most popularly ground beef)
-Pork (most popularly in the form of bacon and ham)
-Turkey (not as popular as the others, but we do eat a good bit of it)
-Shrimp
-Butter
-Noodles
-Cream of chicken soup
-Cream of mushroom soup
-Cream of celery soup
-Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, and parmesan are most popular)
-Cream cheese
-Velveeta (a pasteurized processed cheese that melts super smoothly and is popular in dips and casseroles)
-Chicken eggs
-Cow’s milk
-Heavy cream
-Sour cream
-Canned tomatoes in all forms (diced, fire roasted, crushed, tomato sauce)
-Rotel (canned diced tomatoes and chopped green chilies)
-Canned mushrooms
-White rice
-Worcestershire sauce
-Soy sauce
-Ketchup
-Ranch dressing (we will dip almost anything in ketchup or ranch dressing)
-Pre-packaged flour tortilla shells (we will roll up almost anything in a tortilla shell)
-Potatoes (one of the most versatile vegetables out there)
-Garlic
-Chicken and beef broths
-Strawberries
-Blueberries
-Peaches
-Flour
-Sugar
-Brown sugar
-Corn
-Carrots
-Bell peppers
-Cabbage
-Sausage (pork, beef, smoked, Polish, Italian, breakfast)
-Sweet potatoes
-Marshmallows
-Onions
-Jarred salsa
-Jarred spaghetti sauce
-Boxed macaroni and cheese
-Asparagus
-Celery
-Beans
-Salmon
-Tuna
-Grains like quinoa and couscous have become increasingly popular
-Taco seasoning
-Apples
-Cinnamon
-Pumpkin spice
-Olive oil
-Vegetable oil
-Sweetened condensed milk
-Ritz crackers (they make a buttery, crunchy topping for casseroles)
As I said earlier, staple ingredients vary from region to region. I am from the American South, so I would also like to share with you some popular dishes from my region. I don’t personally like all of these dishes, but nonetheless, they are wildly popular in my neck of the woods.
-Fried chicken
-Cornbread
-Collard greens
-Turnip greens
-Mustard greens
-Black-eyed peas
-Peach cobbler
-Blueberry cobbler
-Apple pie cooked in a cast iron skillet
-Venison (deer meat)
-Stuffed bell peppers
-Beef stew
-Pimento cheese
-Steamed crawfish
-Shrimp creole
-Fried turkey
-Fried catfish
-Coleslaw
-Potato salad
-Homemade baked beans cooked in a Dutch oven
-Fried pork skins
-All kinds of BBQ
-Tomato gravy over homemade biscuits
-Sausgae gravy over homemade biscuits
-Tomato sandwiches
-Fried squash
-Fried okra
-From-scratch spaghetti
-Fried chicken gizzards
-Meatloaf
-All kinds of casseroles
-Salmon patties
-Bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers
-Deviled eggs
-Pigs-in-a-blanket (little smokies wrapped and baked in crescent roll dough)
-Butter beans (Lima beans cooked with meaty ham bones)
Now as promised, here’s that recipe for haluski noodles. I added more bacon than it calls for because four slices of bacon is practically a single serving, and after it came out of the oven, I added a tiny splash of Worcestershire and soy sauces to make it a little more moist and flavorful.

Extra Stuffing - Sinday Drabble
Taehyung x American Reader - 🔥💕
Note: This is purely self indulgent and I didn’t have anything for Tae on the list yet! There is definitely some humor and hopefully some enjoyable smut. The other members do make an appearance. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
Note note: omg this was longer than expected. I was hella sick for the last two days, but here it is. Hope everyone had a good holiday!
-
So far, the guys seemed to enjoy Your American traditions. Everything from exchanging valentines all the way to hunting for colored eggs and even stealing kisses under mistletoe. You hadn’t had the chance to subject them to the wild day of over eating and taking naps and shopping online yet, however, and it was that time of year. “Kookie, you better get out of the kitchen! I swear if you stole another-“
The Maknae gave you a sheepish, deviled egg grin as he swiped the remaining filling off the edge of his lip and tilted his head. His English had greatly improved, though it still had an adorable accent and fumble to it that made you grin as he quickly apologized. You still didn’t know why he had to speak in English when you had learned Korean. “Noona, I’m so sorry. These egg... things are... so good. We need more.” You nodded, shooing his large frame out of the kitchen only to be pushed back in by another large frame.
Taehyung didn’t care too much to apologize to Jungkook as he shoved him aside for you, only giving the younger man a playful eyebrow waggle, his eyes going up in that silly face he made before he grabbed the ladle from the crock pot to pour himself another cup of apple cider. “This is good. But... I’m afraid I’m going to drink it all.” They were all in and out of the kitchen now, examining the plates you had assembled. Jin and Yoongi were really the only ones allowed since they cooked the most, but it seemed the smells were too much for the others to resist. “Don’t drink it all or you’re gonna be sick, Tae.”
He shrugged, and after eyeing you for a long moment, he retreated. Things had been different between the two of you. Stolen glances, less than innocent flirting and suggestive gestures. You had always known he could be down right dirty, keeping up with even Jimin and Namjoon, but lately it seemed he’d fallen into a habit of making you blush. Earlier, when you’d been found searching the cupboards, he’d all but given you a heart attack when his hand slid up the inside of your thigh to support you.
Originally, you’d passed it off as a caring gesture, one he’d do for any of the guys as well, but the rush of desire that came when he actually hefted you off the counter when you found the can of corn spoke otherwise. Maybe you were projecting your desire for him, but you couldn’t help but feel your body heat when his gaze left you to disappear under his lush lashes. Why did he have to look so damn good?
Could you just eat him for dinner?
“Namjoon!”
The scuffle in the dining area and several mumbled apologies from Namjoon alerted you right out of your wandering thoughts, making you gasp as you narrowly dodged burning yourself on a hot casserole dish. “What happened?” Tae came rushing in to pull off his shirt, the warm drink he’d just served himself staining the front of the white sweater. “Oh no.” You rushed to him, wiping the sticky liquid from his chest with a wet dishtowel before you looked his shirt over. “Go wash it according to the directions. It should be ok if you do it fast.”
He had frozen in place, missing your command while he gawked at your hands on his abdomen and chest. There had been several times the two of you had touched, but never like this that he could think of. Your touch was soft and careful, like you were somehow concerned over him being burned, though he was sure it hadn’t been quite that hot. “Noona, it’s ok.” As your eyes lifted to his, you finally snapped out of it to realize what the hell you were doing. “Oh! Sorry... uhm. Hurry! Dinner is ready.”
Aside from Namjoon, who was cleaning up the spill, you asked the others for help as Tae backed away toward the laundry room, and thanked the heat of the kitchen to explain your flushed face. The guys did not need to know that you were crushing on Taehyung. It would... be disastrous. “Careful, guys.” Hoseok and Jungkook placed your perfectly roasted bird on the table and you clapped your hands. “Oh my god, Norman Rockwell would be impressed. TAE! Put a shirt on and come sit for a picture.”
And so you could fucking breathe again.
The guys sat while Jungkook set his camera up on a delay, rushing back to his seat beside Jimin before he held up two fingers as they posed. The flash of the camera saved the moment in time as you let Jin cut the turkey, the others digging into the dishes. Green bean casserole, candied yams, dressing, salad, potato salad, mashed potatoes, rice (per their request), macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs, kimchi that Jin and Jungkook demanded, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and a caramel cheesecake, what was left of the cider, Soju, beer, soda, gravy, ham, and rolls.
If this wasn’t a carb load, you didn’t know what would be. They better be energized after this and ready to go... though the turkey might slow them down. “So... most of these are things I am used to eating at my own family gatherings. But we added some of your things so everything is balanced! Eat up!” You didn’t have to speak twice, the seven men around you stuffing their faces. Animated chatter had you distracted, but a tap against your shin made you turn to look at Tae, who offered you a bite of ham, rice, and kimchi. “Noona, this is good. Try.” You took the bite, the smirks around the table missed by your eyes.
Tae had voiced his interest in you several times with his members, but he had never really imagined you were going to even come close to reciprocating until now. The blushing cheeked glances and giggles and touches spoke volumes to him about your comfort with him, and he was not afraid to use that to his advantage. “Wow. That... the kimchi... it totally made that better!” Tae nodded and laughed softly, taking a sip of his cider as he eyed you over the rim of the cup.
If you could actually melt... you would’ve.
Between reminding Jungkook to chew his food fully so he didn’t choke and coordinating how to have them put whipped topping on their pie without unloading an entire can on their hands for a trick video for tik tok or their mouths to just eat it, dinner was rather entertaining. Eventually, the tryptophan started to kick in, however, Yoongi being the first one to retreat for a nap. Jungkook and Jimin had attempted to watch a movie while digesting, luring Namjoon and Jin in before they were all snoring.
Hoseok was able to help clean up before he retreated too, and you were sure you’d seen Tae disappear to his room. “Thank you Hobi!” He nodded and shuffled out, leaving you alone. Or at least you thought you were. Humming softly, you began putting the bit of leftovers away, leaning into the fridge. You closed it and turned only to immediately press back into the cool metal, Tae’s face right in front of you. “Kim Taehyung... where do you get off thinking you can just-“
The hungry kiss was not expected. How had he even just snuck up on you?! His lips were needy, working yours open to plunge his tongue past, leaving your reeling. Nope, this was not real. You had simply fell into a post feast day dream. There was no way you were playing tonsil hockey with Tae. But you had to let yourself enjoy it, moaning into the kiss as you threaded your fingers into his messy hair. Being lifted from the floor, you wrapped your legs around his waist and let him carry you, hiding your face in his neck when he proudly toted you past the snoring pile of men on the couch.
Maybe it wasn’t a dream?
The click of his door shutting as he shuffled with you in his arms pulled you from his neck, and he laid you down, lips finding yours again as he climbed between your legs. “You’ve been torturing me all day... and months before that. How am I supposed to keep my hands to myself?” He spoke softly against your lips before he opened his eyes, meeting your gaze. “I... Tae...” He worried for a second if he had read the signals wrong...
But then your hands pushed his new sweater up his back and he groaned softly when you nipped his bottom lip. “I’m still hungry... for you.” If that wasn’t the way to melt your panties you were sure the slick between your thighs was arousal for him then. His left hand pulled your body tight against his, right arm switching as he rotated out of his sweater you so insistently tugged over his head. “Tell me this is what you wanted... tell me I wasn’t wrong.” He was practically begging you to reinforce your attraction to him, and you whimpered and nodded.
Not satisfied, Tae caught your jaw in gentle fingertips, eyebrow raised as if he was waiting for you to clarify. “I... yes. I want you, Tae. God, I want you.” That was all he needed to hear, it seemed, his kiss feeling like it would swallow you up. Who knew he’d be this intense? Well, based off of Singularity, you should’ve known. His hands left your hips to tug your longer sweater dress off your body and over your head. You laid beneath him now in only leggings, leg warmers, and your underwear.
Long, delicate fingers traced the lace detail on your baby pink bra before they dipped up and inward to map out the swell of your cleavage. “Fuck... I can’t believe this... look at you.” He seemed beside himself and you blushed under his gaze, eyes tracing his features. He had gained a lot of muscle over the last few months, looking absolutely delectable. Your tongue and teeth were practically itching to trace every inch of him. And dammit... you meant every inch.
He called you up with the waggle of his fingers before he reached behind you to undo your bra. It took a moment, and he laughed in his frustration before you helped him, his laugh softening against your lips. “I’ve dreamed of this moment, baby. Making you mine... showing you how you make me feel.” His deep voice left you vibrating under him, pressing closer wherever you could for contact. His fingers hooked under the tack of your bra and tugged, freeing your chest from its prison. You didn’t miss the little inhale he did as he laid eyes on you.
Your mind could have never imagined being the reason for Tae’s undoing. He looked so enraptured by just looking at you, but acted like a man starved as he kissed between them, over the soft mound of each as well, before he swirled a nipple with that skillful tongue of his and then all but swallowed it up. The sound you made was probably just as unbelievable because you were sure you didn’t sound like a damn pornstar. “God... Tae...”
He felt the need in your pleading words and use of his name, deft fingertips already shedding your leggings and panties right along with them. He needed to feel you. Instantly greeted by your slick arousal, he groaned and pulled back to watch his fingers work you into a panting frenzy. “That’s all because of me? Damn baby, I should’ve made a move a long time ago... fuck, look at you.” You wished you could. For now, you’d have to take his word for it. “Ah... mhmm, like that.”
“I’ll taste you fully another day baby. Right now I need to fill you up.” He sucked his fingers clean so lewdly that you clenched around nothing, dazed and needy as he stripped off his jeans and boxers. Jimin hadn’t lied. Tae was impressive on all accounts. He was perfectly thick, longer than you’d expected, and the softest dusty pink you had ever imagined. Any other day you might’ve sobbed and begged to suck him off. But right now... you needed him buried to the hilt inside you.
“Condom?”
You almost missed the question, and you sputtered to life, fingers reaching to touch him as you kissed his lips. “No, I’m a big girl. I come protected thanks to Mirena.” He blinked and you laughed. “Sorry... birth control.” Finally understanding, you squeaked when he launched forward, scooping you up to drag you up the bed, before he dipped between your thighs and wasted not another second in connecting your bodies.
You’d never felt so full. So whole. So... stuffed.
“Oh my god.”
He grunted when you grappled with his body, trying to hang on somehow when he thrusted. It was so much all at once that you made a ridiculous attempt to catch your breath at the same time it was being forced out of you. “Are you ok?” He whimpered, his next thrust gentler as you nodded. Your Head was too far gone to form sentences, so you inhaled softly, able to breathe again, and stroked his face. “I’m fine... so big. Fuck.” His smirk was your only warning before he snapped his hips again, with gusto, earning frantic noises from your lips before he tried to silence them with a kiss.
“You’re so fucking tight... damn.”
You were vaguely aware of his arm over you, gripping the headboard so it didn’t hit the wall. Legs hitched up higher, your brain spiraled down into pleasure as he let himself go, fucking you into the mattress. His pace was almost bruising, the poor man having been driven insane over the last few months, wanting you but not knowing if he could have you. Gasping your praises as he pushed you over the edge, you caught the perfect sight of Taehyung losing his mind over how you clenched around him through your blurry vision.
“Fuck baby, that’s it... take it.”
He was so damn dirty, and you loved it. Feeling him empty himself into you after a handful of stuttering thrusts, you fell limp under him, only to be scooped up and held close. Taehyung groaned as he laid back in his bed, letting you straddle him. Hot kisses spread up your throat and along your jaw before he kissed you in a much softer way, almost lazy and indulgent. “I promise I’ll go softer in round two baby... I just couldn’t wait...” you found your words as you laughed, pulling from his lips to look him in the eye. “Wait for what?” His smirk told you something dirty was coming, and he snorted. “You know... like you said about the turkey...” He chuckled at your face, and licked his lips.
“You said it needed extra stuffing.”

🌿 Appalachian Funeral Customs and Kentucky Funeral Cake 🌿
“During the time [mourning] rituals were taking place, the neighbor women would be preparing food to be brought to the home of the deceased. This practice is still done today in many Appalachian communities. The food was to help feed the family and all of the visitors that would be in the home during the period of mourning. The term “comfort food” may have roots in this custom as the foods were to help comfort the family.”
- Mystical Mountains (Haley & Jackson)
Tumblr media
I have always found funeral customs intriguing. It’s interesting to see how major cultures and and countercultures approach the aspect of death, mourning, preparation, burial, and belief (religious or spiritual). How we respond to death often says a lot about the cultures we are a part of. Is it a celebration of life? A mourning period? A process of spiritual transition? A taboo subject not to be mentioned? One thing that is always sure: death often arrives swiftly and unexpectedly--sometimes just to brush elbows with us, sometimes to embrace a loved one, and other times to whisk our own selves away.
As an Appalachian, deaths and funerals in my family and many other families in my community served as a time of reflection and grief: reflection on oneself, and one’s own mortality as well as on the life--both the good and the bad recollections--of the deceased. Regardless of the circumstance surrounding the death, families in the community--especially if they are a part of a church community--will receive food from members of the community. Typically, these dishes are homemade and are comprised of “comfort foods” like ham, green beans, corn bread, potatoes (mashed or in a salad), coleslaw, deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese, and assorted baked goods and desserts like cake or banana pudding. When my husband’s grandfather passed, my in-laws’ kitchen counters were covered with Tupperware containers harboring casseroles and cooked foods of all kinds and the aluminum foil-covered plates and bowls were filled with assorted breads and salads (and not the green kind). His family was able to eat on the meals provided to them for the better part of two weeks due to the love and support for the deceased and the family themselves from the community, friends, and extended family.
The high levels of food that were gifted could potentially be left uneaten, so my in-laws invited other members of the community, close friends, and extended family to come eat with them during afternoons when the mourning period and grief had momentarily subsided. Therefore, this gift to them was ultimately shared--as well as the burden of the loss at times. Food, especially that which is prepared from the heart, can be an act of love and can foster healing in its own right. Cooking and baking with the intentions to heal a wounded heart or an ailment of the physical body or soul is an art in itself--a magic, of no small sort.
Kentucky Funeral Cake was one of these “comfort foods” to help feed families in Appalachia during times of mourning. This particular recipe was shared on October 12th, 1988 in a New York Times article called “An Old Custom, Funeral Cakes” by Florence Fabricant. The recipe itself is a type of pound cake and the recipe has been adapted from Kentucky Cooking by Charles Patteson with Craig Emerson.
Kentucky Funeral Cake Recipe
1 cup butter, at room temperature, plus butter for greasing pan
2 and 2/3 cups all-purpose flour, plus flour for dusting pan
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 cups of sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup milk
1 and 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Steps:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter and flour a 9-inch springform pan.
Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly. Fold in the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Stir in vanilla.
Pour into prepared pan and bake for 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and bake 60 to 70 minutes longer, until the cake is brown and a  cake tester comes out clean. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes, then remove from mold/pan and continue cooling on rack. Drizzle with homemade icing if you wish.
What types of customs and comfort foods does the culture you are a part of have? Feel free to share!🌿
