A lot of people quite understandably hate August, but he just might be my favourite character. He is heartwernchingly pathetic but still there’s that burning in him. He’s painful but I am infautated with the mechaninsms of his character. He is such an interesting character, the underdog of underdogs. No-one is rooting for him, he has no-one in his corner. In s1 we all think he’s a dick (Justified! he proves us right!) but his father died to drug abuse and it seems people don’t know about it. He too has an addiction issue from self medicating his own fragile mental health, that is all he has inherited from his father except from a mountain of secret debt. Poor kid is financialy struggling in a big way, and his mother just doesn’s seem to give a crap about how much he has to deal with. And not to mention that he will be grieving for Eric too. Like he is under so many pressures and so alone with them. Wille is simolarly lonely in his position of crown prince but at least he has the respect and stability of it, people are nice to him because of it even if it is superficial, and he had Simone, and when he doesn’t he has Felice- he is not alone. But the tragedy of August’s character is his isolation. He is struggling, he is repenting, he it trying so hard. But in his isolation no-one can see it, they don’t register how he punishes himself by witholding food and over exercising, or his drug dependancy. He can’t share his financial situation, he can’t share that he is the ‘back up’, or even admit his guilt for leaking the video. He can only try to appease Wille in his justified revenge and watch everything that he has spent the last several years building, quietly letting the things that gave his life meaning be stripped from him. The way he submits is heartbreaking. He would do anything for Wilhelm, to make it better, but what is that worth? There is nothing he can give but he has to give something so he sacrifices himself. He loses respect of his peers until even their platitudious relationships ring hollow. The kicker is, things are worse now. Despite his portrayal as a goody two shoes suck up overly dedicated to tradition, his rule as prefect was fair. It was almost dorky in hindsight, we see just how thoughtfull he was about the rowing team when he is able to legitimately critique the lack of comradery under its new leadership. Once it is lost we can see the kindess and gentlness he possessed, he took Wille under his wing. But in his isolation he was misguided. When Wille outed his financial situation his ‘friends’ litteraly turned away. And don’t get me started on his relationship with Sara! Initialy misguided- obviously. But who is there to guide him? He is hurting and on his own. Sara is his safe space. Remember the candle lit display in his room, how he makes it special for her, and waits and worries. Remember how despite his financial situation, and how he loathes to sell off the remainders of his legacy, of his father, he buys the horse for her. Misguided, again, but the tenderness in that gesture? Sloppy and ill thought out as it may be- it was a grand gesture he made almost casualy simply because he didn’t want Sara to be upset. And OH how fandom dotes on the unrequited admission at the end of S1 from Wille, gotta know I love some unresolved tension, but the way this gets spat back in his face? He’s an idiot, but I pitty his foolish soul. He comes so close to salvation too. He has a purpose again when he is the ‘backup’, as illdeserved as it may be it gives him drive. But the doomed nature of this glimer of a chance makes is so tragic and unbelievably depressing. It’s a complication, a technicality, and the only thing his hopes can be hitched on. Gahh!! He is tragic, he is trying, he is tearing me appart!

I love Percy Weasley (and Ronnie, but thankfully I've seen more Ron defenders and appreciation posts popping up in recent years, as they should) SO MUCH. He's legitimately one of my favourite characters and my poor little meow meow. Him and Severus have SO MANY parallels. They were both intelligent, ambitious young men who came from poverty and experienced bullying from the people who were supposed to support them. Controversial opinion, but the other Weasley kids (ESPECIALLY Fred and George) were unnecessarily brutal to poor Perce to the point of being malicious. Of course young Severus and Percy went along with the "wrong" crowd when the "right" crowd continuously mocked, belittled, and taunted them, while the "wrong" crowd told them that they were brilliant, that they would go so far, and that anyone who tried to belittle them just didn't get it, that they were just jealous of how successful they were gonna be. Long story short, Percy is adorable and precious and so cute and smart and I want to brush his hair out of his face and kiss him on the nose.
I just drank carrot juice for the first time in 15 years I’m currently going through something
Anyway, I 100000% AGREE. I’ve answered a somewhat similar ask a while ago. I have a headcanon that Percy was actually Snape’s secret fave student. I just know Percy would scold Ronald in a Hermione-like way whenever he’d say anything bad about Severus, “Who cares if he can be a git sometimes? He’s an absolute genius at Potions and passes down his knowledge to his students. If you just got your head out of your arse for a bit, you’d see just how much I’m right.”
Percy’s like my fourth fave HP character, I totally see a younger-Snape in him. Percy was belittled and ridiculed by his family and his ambition and desire for power led him to walking out on them and going after his dreams so his talents can finally be acknowledged. Snape was relentlessly bullied by the Marauders (four Gryffindors) which was dismissed by the headmaster of Hogwarts (also a Gryffindor) and was already ostracised by the rest of Hogwarts for being a Slytherin, he soon joined the Death Eaters alongside Lucius and the Slytherins after graduating because he likely believed that he would finally get recognition for his great knowledge in the Dark Arts. They also both did it at age 19 (I think Sev might’ve joined a little before he turned 19, either way it was after graduating).
Controversial opinion, but the other Weasley kids (ESPECIALLY Fred and George) were unnecessarily brutal to poor Perce to the point of being malicious.
I CAN’T EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I AGREE WITH YOU. I’ve made a few posts talking about this and defending Perce, x, x, x, x, x (my all-time fave Ron defender liked this post and I’m simply never getting over that), x (probably my fave post I’ve made on my blog), and x. Also I hate the claim that their treatment of Perce was normal because “that’s just what siblings do,” like no I literally have 5 other siblings, and while yes we all act like psychos together, we’ve never come close to doing the shit the twins did to Perce and Ron. There’s a difference between being an asshole to your siblings and endangering their life and constantly mocking them. They never took his dreams seriously, and honestly that would be such a horrible thing to go through. Tbh I’m impressed Percy didn’t leave them sooner 💀
and same, I’m such a hardcore Percy apologist that I will go absolutely insane if I see anyone criticise him 😭 He’s literally so hated and for what

im literally so obsessed with the post saying peter pettigrew would never be a traitor… that’s like basically The first thing we truly discover about him. right there from book three. like that is The Basis of his role in the narrative, that he was the traitor and sirius was not. that he was willing to bow to the winning power rather than risk dying for his friends and values (which is. the one issue the narrative never flinches on. doing the right thing rather than the easy.) like these aren’t real people, they are characters with narrative functions. peter is everything harry doesn’t respect, everything characters like ron and neville defy, when they doubt their places among their friends and still fight for what they believe in, and a foil to snape — snape’s love for lily causes him to make a good choice, peter’s lack of dedication to his friends causes him to make a bad choice. a bad choice that KICKS OFF THE ENTIRE PREMISE. like. yes these are characters and you can choose to play with them like dolls. but hp is a very tight narrative, and it’s silly to claim they are somehow at heart the antithesis of the space they fill.
I know like... if there's ONE detail about him then that's it. It showed up as a recommended post on my dash and I was so baffled for a moment haha. I could understand an attempt to defend his reasoning (I certainly like to understand it) but like... his character is nothing without that moment, it literally defines him as a character, so to say it's bad writing is so silly.
It's like if I made an impassioned post claiming that Voldemort would NEVER kill Lily and James. It moves past headcanon into just... outright denial of the basic facts of the characters and the story. Harry would NEVER have green eyes!!!! Tbh though Peter Defence Movement in general is the last thing I'd have expected a few years ago.
Recently just before I really started getting back into marauders fandom on tumblr, I posted in a discord asking for people's views on Peter, explaining my own interpretation and wanting input. And I was legitimately SO confused when EVERYONE replied in the vein of "hmm well that's not how I see him but ok. he actually was a poor little meow meow who took care of his friends and rubbed their shoulders after a battle, he was a scared little boy and he couldnt help it."
I was VERY taken aback by the complete 180 that peoples views on Peter seemed to have done, since I assumed my portrayal was controversially sympathetic. Fandom used to largely just ignore him, and when he wasn't ignored he was reviled. It once would have been heresy for me to imply Peter had any sympathetic qualities at all lol, whereas here I was pretty solidly shouted down for saying he had the unsavory characteristics we're shown in canon, such as enjoying watching James and Sirius bully others.
It's honestly so fascinating, like when did this happen lmao

Strange Things That Happened In History Class
Cryptid Teachers
Professor Gadling had to take a moment. He really did.
It was that or explode into hysterical laughter right that very second and that really wasn't going to help his cause now, was it?
The paper he was trying to grade was supposed to be an essay on the suicide of Crown Prince Rudolf at Mayerling and its indirect effect on World War I. Instead, what he got was "Our Four Cryptid Teachers on Campus."
And a List, which deserved to be quoted in its entirety:
a. Professor Robert "Hob" Gadling - Probably knew Shakespeare IRL; explains why he has such a hate-boner for him
b. Professor Adam Pierson - has an actual motherfucking SWORD hidden somewhere in his clothes (maybe it's like Hammerspace?!!) and might possibly DUEL other immortals; maybe the OLDEST immortal because he talks about ancient EGYPT like he's been there, done that and worn the t-shirt
c. Professor Duncan Macleod - the OTHER sword-wielding immortal
d. Professor Nicholas Chevalier - VAMPIRE?!!! OMG?!!! Also, his Dad is legit creepy and we sincerely believe he's legit a vampire?!!!
Honestly, there was only one, sane, sensible way to respond to this.
Dustin, interesting essay choice there, lad, but I was rather expecting something about poor Crown Prince Rudolf and not speculations about my cryptid status. Incidentally, thank you for realizing that I'm not the Oldest Immortal around, yes, Professor Pierson wears his Ancient Egypt T-shirt with pride and yes, you'd do well to steer clear of Lucien Lacroix, that one gives me the willies.
You have a day to give me the right essay, so chop chop!
2. The Cat Thing
"So maybe his fursona is a cat, did ya ever think of that, genius?!"
"Ahahahaha, right, sure, Steve, he uses meows, purrs and trills like a legitimate language and the cats understand him - this is NOT a fursona thing my friend!"
"Also, Steve-o, I didn't think you knew about things like fursonas..."
"Eh, you've been around the Internet long enough, you pick up on some things, Wheeler."
"So Murphy speaks Cat like legitimately, actually speaks Cat, not just like us humans doing random meows."
"Yep."
"Score 1 for the Cryptid Candidacy! We're adding Murphy to the list."
"Actually, humanity knew how to speak feline once. The knowledge was lost, aeons ago. Isn't that right, Miette?"
"Meow!"
"I could tell you that Story, if you've a mind to listen."
"GYAAAAH!!!!"
3. Typhoon Morpheus
First off, Isabel didn't really actually mean to eavesdrop.
She'd submitted the wrong paper for the classwork they'd done today and while it wasn't as spectacular a mistake as Dustin Henderson's Cryptid List - it was still, obviously, the wrong paper. So she was just hurrying to fix things, although she was a little nervous, because Professor G seemed to be in a bad mood the whole day.
She was just about to knock on the door when she heard:
"Look, Gadling, you gotta do something. Caw!"
That voice sounded oddly familiar.
"Oh, Christ, what now?"
"Whatever it is you two did, fix it, for the love of Murphy. Do you see these feathers, man? I am soaking wet - it's been raining in the Dreaming and it hasn't stopped. Lucienne's already got all the rest of us trying to save the books in the Library from the flooding."
"Raining."
"Yeah. The boss thinks you don't love him anymore. So, boom, cue the rain. Thunder and lightning. Sturm und Drang - the works, you know?"
"Wait. Hang on, he thinks we've broken up?!!"
"Duh? Yeah?!!"
"Oh for Chrissakes, it was just a silly, ridiculous argument - I'm - hey, Matthew, remind me to kiss the stupid out of that idiot. After I yell at him. And kiss him stupid again."
"Reminder set, Other-Boss. Can we go now?"
Isabel told herself she was never, ever, going to speak of this to anyone - even if the fact that she had witnessed Matthew talking was probably enough to confirm Murphy's Cryptid Status on Dustin's stupid list.
4. Stranger Things
"Run this by me again, love," Professor Gadling said, in obvious bewilderment. "You're a Dungeon Master? What is that?"
"Not anything kinky, Professor G! AHAHAHA!" Dustin Henderson said in overly cheerful tones.
Murphy slanted the boy a look of wry amusement. "I think he understands that already."
"He's our DM for Dungeons and Dragons, Professor," said Will Byers. "It's a storytelling game."
"Ah, of course, a storytelling game, why wouldn't His Darkness the Prince of Stories be interested in that?" Professor Gadling said wryly.
"He's the best DM ever," volunteered Iggy Pop. "Like, the way Eddie went down fighting the demobats with Metallica, that was like, truly epic."
Murphy inclined his head in a regal almost-bow. "I can only but inspire. And I rather enjoyed young Eddie's performance. Truly something only a Master Bard could do."
"I'm still dead though!"
"Relax, man, we'll bring you back in flashbacks or something. Or maybe make you into a vampire!"
"Hey, you'd better - because I am this close to writing the Love Song of Eddie Munson and Steve Harrington and posting it on AO3!"
Professor Gadling knew when to give in. "Fine, you can use The New Inn for your session tonight. Just try not to wreck the place while you're off trying to fight the forces of darkness or whatever."
Murphy leaned over to drop a kiss into his hair. "We'll put all the breakables away before we begin our quest anew, dearest."
-end-
Footnote the First: Shortly after Dustin compiled his List of Cryptid Teachers on Campus, a new Professor joined the faculty, having retired from his former tailoring job at Kingsman. His name? Michael Percival Archangelus.
Footnote the Second: Dream of the Endless is not quite sure how he ended up adopting Hob's students and joining their D&D group, but he is quite charmed at their imagination and creativity and thoroughly enjoyed the idea of designing a villain formidable enough to test them.
Footnote the Third: Look, Dream still hadn't quite gotten all the nuances of a healthy relationship but he's at least figured out that minor spats and squabbles do not equate to breaking up and ending things forever. Hob's made sure of that. The kisses definitely helped.
****
Did I also just crossover Forever Knight, Kingsman and Stranger Things into this ridiculousness? Yes, yes I did. Nobody tell Neil.
Also, the "Michael" in this story is the headcanon Michael I came up with for the Lucifer show. Except obviously, this Michael isn't an evil twin douchecanoe but is an actual legit good guy... who uh.... spent a few years with Kingsman.

ngl sometimes i feel like people forget that warriors IS written by authors and not like, random folks off the street. not claiming its super well-written but i think its fair to assume they know what an unreliable narrator is
It's fandom joke that the writers are like, incapable of thinking. And that annoys me a little bit
Every interpretation is the least good faith take possible, very few people try to understand what the writers were actually trying to do because they've left any legitimate engagement at the door. I don't understand how that isn't exhausting.
That's not to say I don't get MAAAAD at warriors at times (if Leopardstar's Honor comes within a 15 mile radius it's ON SIGHT) but like, at least try to understand they Do usually have a point
Sometimes that point is "Leopardstar is actually a poor little meow meow who had endlessly good intentions and was totally tricked guys :(" but that IS what they are saying. I will eat their spleen and dance on their graves. But it is an actual point.
Warrior Cats' worst problems as a series come from 1. It being a corporate product that cannot challenge the status quo in a meaningful way and 2. The writing team's latent biases remaining unexamined (the xenophobia, the abelism, the misogyny, the abuse apologia).
And like... those are interesting flaws. Warriors is a very interesting series to examine. These are super common biases in British and American people, especially your average well-meaning Liberal type.
So I'm willing to engage in good faith, try to imagine what they WANTED to say, share what I took away from it, and conclude with how I'd tell the story myself. I have more fun that way.

Some more cat!bionicle thoughts:
Onewa and Matau are total tornados in your home. You wake up to the two of them playing and Matau makes not-a-cat sounds to confuse Onewa
Having Vakama, Takua, and Jaller is so cute because Vakama honks while carrying one of the kittens to you and is so protective of them both. He'll even growl at you if they're laying by him and you try to move them out pet them. He pants a lot more when he can't find Takua and when Jaller is meow shouting for Takua. They calmed down once he was found
Nokama is happy to have brothers, but having one the judges people, one that goes outside all the time, one that hisses and hits people, one that BARKS, and one that is an anxious mess makes her stare at you like she's asking, "What the hell werenyou thinking?"
While less than favorable family was visiting, Whenua brought some shed snake skin to you. EVERYONE screamed and the less than favorable relative told you to give Whenua back IMMEDIATELY, but you didn't need to because they didn't visit again when you told them he brings A LOT of stuff to you so you can tell him what it is
Matau doesn't mind chilling in your car, but he figured out how to honk the car horn, and now you know you have a time cinstraint whenever you go out because you CANNOT get yelled at for having a mischievous cat that doesn't want to be forgotten
You once woke up to see Onewa staring at you. No purring, no real reaction, just staring. You helped him lay down and promised you weren't going anywhere. Next time you woke up, he was still in your arms, and he was purring
Nuju will steal people's hats right from on their heads. Even yours. He HATES hats. One of your friends tricked him by wearing two hats and once and he was hecking bamboozled. And mad for an hour
Nokama will catch you dozing off when staying up late to study and will "encourage" you to go to bed, but put a bookmark in the textbook you're studying in so you can pick it back up the next day. She helps you take breaks too and will be telling you to do your best and that you've got your test/exam in the bag. She's there for you regardless of how you did. If you pass, thanks to your hard work, or if you didn't do as well as you wanted to, despite all your studying, she's proud of you, and she lets you know she is
Owning Matau and Vakama is so funny to watch sometimes because Matau keeps trying to get his brother to play with him, but Vakama only stares at him like an anomaly. Matau imitated Vakama's panting and honking right in front of Vakama, and Vakama smacked him for it. When you had to leave, Vakama was a little panicky, but you came home to see Vakama napping with Matau laying on him and grooming his furr, particularly his head and under his chin. In another instance, you "lost" Vakama and Matau found him and brought him to you by his scruff, with Vakama growling as he was dragged around
Owning Takua, Jaller, and Nixe is adorable, but also something else entirely. For one, you have three tiny cats running around, one that hides everywhere, one that guards the place, and one that can legitimately read and watch movies. Takua loves following Nixie around the house. Jaller keeps an eye on them both
Bathing the main six cats goes like this: Nokama has an absolute spa day, Nuju only bathes with the water as cold as you can safely get it and still glares at you for bathing him, Matau keeps trying to escape and you learn more than once that he can imitate a car alarm pretty well, Onewa tries to kill you, Whenua growls the entire time, and Vakama screams bloody murder and literally hisses at you the entire time
Bathing the littles goes similarly: Takua doesn't chill out until he's got Jaller with him, and Jaller keeps meowing at you, and Nixie almost falls asleep
If you're dating someone: Nuju judges them even after they've gained his trust even to pet him, Nokama isn't trusting them for a while until she's heard and learned enough about them, Matau is going to try driving the poor soul crazy and ultimately befriend them to the point they do that "Machine Gun Cat" thing, Onewa will attack them even after they befriend each other, your partner is Whenua's original owner so you two are cat parents, Vakama is hiding enough that they think you were lying about having a cat, but then they wake up to see him standing on their chest and staring at them; it took a while for him to warm up to them, but it was so worth it when he ultimately did, Takua steals their stuff and brings it to you, Jaller guards you from them for a while, and Nixie uses her galaxy sized brain to get them to give her books to read and, in rare occasions, treats to nom on
You made a little cart/train to pull Matau in and he DOES NOT leave you alone until you cart him around. In actually, you made a train for all 9 cats. Nuju and Whenua were indifferent, Nokama was fine, Matau and Onewa love it, Vakama doesn't stop panting, Takua sits up and enjoys the ride, Jaller really only enjoys the ride when he sees where they're going, and Nixie falls asleep
Vakama has saved you from some toxic "friends." You were getting ready for a meet up and he made you chase him around the house until you got a text from an actual friend saying the toxic "friend" started talking shit and was very catty despite being an adult. Your friend decided to come hang out with you at your place and Vakama stayed out of hiding because he feels safe with you and your friend

Rating the AF characters on how well they’d handle being transported into a cheesy slice-of-life musical movie:
Holly: -4/10
She hates it. She wants to go home. She doesn’t understand why everyone is singing. She dislikes being the Plucky Female Lead who can Drive Fast and Knows How To Use A Gun. She does enjoy getting to be a hero without risk of an IA audit. But she WILL punch whoever is directing this crap, WHAT is with the lipstick?
Mulch: nil ranking
It’s Mulch. He is completely oblivious to the change in situation, and just thinks the food is pretty darn good for a change.
Juliet: 4/10
She doesn’t hate it, per se. But she always liked the talking animal movies more than the musicals. She takes full advantage of the fact that as the Protagonist she is untouchable and does very questionable stunts ('doing a handstand while riding a wild horse bareback over a narrow bridge spanning deep chasm with rapids at the bottom whilst being fired at with arrows' kind of stunts)
Foaly: 6/10
Too techy to get into the musical side of things and winds up as the stereotypical ‘can’t sing can’t dance’ lead. He sulks about it for a bit but then gets the realization that he gets to play out a bunch of cheesy situations with his wife and perks up.
Artemis: 7/10
He also hates it. Keeps trying to turn it into an opera or other dramatic movie as opposed to PG-13 lighthearted nonsense. Only gets a rating this high because it’s a perfect opportunity for him to have fifteen minutes of fame as an actual poor little meow meow in an extended scene where he is stuck on the side of the road absolutely soaked by a Convenient Rainstorm with only a soggy piece of cardboard as cover and has to Accept the Power of Friendship and ask for help. May also begrudgingly participate in the final dance sequence.
Butler: 8/10
He’s not happy at the beginning because what the hell is happening, then when he realizes what's going on he's a bit embarrassed at the cheesiness of it all, and then accepts that it’s hardly the strangest thing he’s ever had to deal with and he might as well make the best of it. Has a good time with silly low stakes hijinks, also gets a rain soaked scene but is considerably less pathetic about it than Artemis, gets the girl at the end, considers the whole thing a weird but not unappreciated holiday where no one was trying to kill him or anyone around him for a change.
No1: 10,000/ 10
Are you kidding? He lives for this stuff. Has a BLAST with the song and dance routines. He does his own special effects all the time whenever he feels necessary (of course the pigeons need jaunty party hats and bow ties! What kind of musical number is it without fireworks in the background in the middle of the day?). Is legitimately sad when the whole thing ends and looks for ways to wind up in a teen sitcom next.

deep space 9!
ok here we go:
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
it used to be odo but now by far sisko, mainly because the benny russell plotline is my absolute favorite star trek plot ever. is he sisko or benny.... if he ascended to the prophets or whatever did he create benny?? if benny russell was a real author in strange new worlds... what does that mean. "you are the dreamer and the dream" is rotating in my microwave brain constantly. odo is still my emo repressed babygirl though.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
if couples count, worf and jadzia. yes they can and have gotten away with murder yes i still want to put them in a little jar on my desk. they're legitimately one of the best written tv couples ever. worf is the wife and jadzia is the husband though
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
damar, im not saying hes a good person or anything but his arc was so interesting to me and he did have his very good moments at the end
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
rom and leeta. roms development was also SO good and leeta is the cutest side character ever i love her. like star trek does not get better than wimpy alien man finding his passion for engineering and falling in love with his hooters waitress wife who helps him form a union. that was peak cinema
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
i cant think of a character that's necessarily unpopular... maybe lwaxana?? i know she was like a minor villain in tng but i loved her in that ep where she hung out with alexander, and her friendship with odo later on in the show was actually super cute to me. she is a queen idc what tng says. headcanon she's still like alexanders cool aunt and worf is very tired.
also near the end... kai winn?? i do not like her or think she was a good person at all but i did feel bad for her for maybe two seconds near the end. i dont know she spent her life wanting to talk to god only for some alien guy to become emissary so while shes evil and i hate her i kinda have pity for her so shes my meow meow idk
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
dukat for sure. i would drop dukat in hot soup. definitely the best written star trek villain though and marc alaimo is such a good actor, every time i watch a dukat ep im like how does alaimo act so well that i genuinely hate this man with a passion
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)

S2E1-"Seven Thirty-Seven"
Season 2 let's fucking goooo. Said out loud "Jesse kill him" in this moment
TW: Sexual violence, addiction, police abuse, racism
Tumblr media
So I mentioned in the last post that Tuco very much matches a white middle class Idea of what a criminal is. Violent, unpredictable, and indulgent, with a massive temper and hang-ups about respect. At the risk of poor meow-meowing him a little I think its interesting that this is complicated in this episode. Tuco PANICS when he realizes No-Doze is seizing, enough to turn the car around and seek out the closest help he has access to. When No-Doze dies, he gets angry, striking him again. This matches what we'll learn in future episodes (and in BCS). Tuco isn't necessarily violent for the hell of it. Rather, using makes him unstable, and that instability often manifests in actions he regrets later. To be clear: Tuco has definitely killed before and likely would have again had he not encountered Hank. He's certainly not taking any steps to protect himself or the people around him. No-Doze's death is really no one's fault but his own. The Salamancas in general tend to manifest their psychological issues and insecurities into violence directed at a lot of indiscriminate bystanders. But to me, even that capacity for regret and lack of control complicates that "stone cold killer" image that Walt and Jesse have of him. Gonzo is also complicated, worrying that shoving No-Doze's corpse under a stack of a cars "[isn't] very Christian", but I'll dig more into that closer to the end.
So we've got another pairing of eroticism and criminality, but this time its manifesting as explicitly sexual violence. Walt assaults his wife. There's no other way to describe it. She is telling him to back off and until she screams "stop it" he continues to ignore her objections. To me, there's two ways to read this scene. One, Walt is unexpectedly aroused by what happened. Something about the distress of the situation, (or very possibly, being yelled at and degraded by a bigger, younger man) created a sexual reaction in him. And/or, Walt is attempting to imitate Tuco as a way to cope with the fear of that situation. Tuco beats the shit out of No-Doze, Walt attempts to act out his fear and frustration on Skyler's body (including shoving her forcefully against the fridge). Skyler even explicitly attributes it to fear, though she believes it stems from his cancer anxieties. Regardless, this isn't going to be the last time Walt attempts to imitate brown men who humiliate him/terrify him in a desperate attempt to defend his own masculinity. Bringing my inevitable cuckoldry discussion ever closer (threatening).
I think its important to give some due credit: Hank is legitimately making an empathetic attempt at helping Marie with her issues. He doesn't always say or do the right things with the situation (clearly being more comfortable tossing her at a therapist than having honest conversations with his wife). But the thing with dealing with addiction is that there's rarely a concrete right solution. He does his best (for now) to not lay blame at her feet, provides her with multiple support mechanisms, and is resolutely in her corner for dealing with this. Which would be very sweet to see if it weren't also likely some tactics he would make fun of a meth addict's family for employing. Its hard not to connect Marie's issues and Hank's work when the show takes pains to show Hank smacking a prisoner's cell bars after a frustrating interaction with her. Hank may be frequently disrespectful and callous to Marie, but he clearly views her as worth investing in, worth coaching through this, and is clearly conscious that she can't be held meaningfully accountable for what she does unless she has the proper help in place too. An attitude that does NOT apply to anyone who isn't his rich white wife.
It is notable, though, that the Schraders have clearly left this all as a secret in order to save face and keep up appearances. I went after Skyler pretty hard for how she responds to her in the moment, but I want it on record: Hank very much ambushes her with information about her kleptomania, and then immediately asks for support without a word of apology for either her distress or for keeping this from her. What Skyler says isn't kind. It isn't nice and it isn't empathetic to her sister. But she's also not wrong that she's being asked to just box up her feelings at a point when she's already under an immense amount of strain, which no one has really bothered to reach out to her for. They really are Jesse and Jake aged up, both vying to be taken seriously while also being mortally afraid of admitting to weakness in their day to day life.
Walt doesn't nail down the lie about the meth, writing off Jesse's concerns. Specifically what he says is "How much salesmanship do we really need? That degenerate snorts anything he gets his hands on." This is going to bite him in the ass next episode, but is pretty telling of how Walt views addicts. Unthinking, ravenous, almost animalistic, and importantly, with no sense of self-preservation.
Gonzo is my final note: he dies doing something innately human. He dies going back to rebury his friend, another gangster that polite society doesn't give a shit about, because its the respectful, Christian thing to do. He dies slowly and in pain, bleeding out alone. This is all extremely funny to the DEA, who pose for selfies with his corpse and cackle about the idiot criminal.

I’m unsure how to say this but a lot (not always or even a majority) of the time when I see people complain about people liking black/white morality in characters it’s tied to them being upset that people aren’t whitewashing the actions of villains. There’s an intense need for others in the audience to treat the actions of the antagonist as understandable and redeemable no matter how unrepentant the character is about horrific actions. It seems more often they want to simplify the nuances down to the point that the character isn’t help responsible at all.
Tumblr media
I am in complete agreement that too often people who employ "black-and-white morality" as a criticism against a fictional character are simply trying to recast a villain's actions as somehow justified. I find there are very few black-and-white protagonists portrayed in media anymore, especially since the turn of the millennium, United States audiences simply don't have the taste for them.
The greatest irony to me is that the parts of the fandom who rail against a heroic protagonist's "black-and-white thinking" eventually become guilty of it themselves. They choose to scorn evaluating individuals and actions through the lens of a rigid and unbending moral system only to replace it with evaluating individuals and actions through the lends of a rigid and unbending emotional partisanship. In other words, every engagement they have with a character to whom they have an emotional or physical attraction must, in the end, be positive. To use the common parlance, their "poor little meow-meow" must be defended against any negative evaluation, even if blood drips from their hands. In the world of politics, this is called partisanship or a cult of personality, and it can be quite dangerous; in the world of fandom, it can lead to similar, if far less serious, behavior.
Before I give an illustrative example, I want to remind people of the difference between protagonist, antagonist, hero and villain. The protagonist is the primary actor in the story; their decisions are the focus and they are changed by the plot. Antagonists are obstacles in that story with which they must grapple. There is not necessarily a moral component to the relationship between protagonist and antagonist. When there is a moral component to that relationship, they are called a hero and a villain.
My personal fandom, Teen Wolf, has a heroic protagonist in Scott McCall. In a stroke of misfortune that has had repercussions for years, the villain of Seasons 1 and 4, Peter Hale, once criticized Scott for "black-and-white thinking" and the villain-stans ran with it, even though this idea literally can not hold up to any close inspection. Here's the quote that started it from the episode Fireflies (3x03):
Peter: Oh, come on. How much damage can they do? So they off a few homeless people, a drunk stumbling out of a bar too late. So what? Let Scott deal with it. Let him be the hero of his morally black and white world. The real survivors, you and I, we live in shades of gray. Then again, even if you did kill them, you're still an Alpha. You can always make more werewolves.
I can guarantee you that no one in the production wanted the audience to think that this was a legitimate criticism. Peter was arguing that Derek, his nephew, allow his sister and one of the teenagers for which he is responsible to run moon-mad and kill innocents rather than risk injury to them or him, because this was all part of Deucalion's (one of the villains of Season 3) plans.
Peter's position isn't shades of gray. There's no moral trade-off happening here. It's selfishness. Letting Cora and Boyd murder innocents isn't going to stop Deucalion's plans. It's going to undermine Derek by driving a wedge between the alpha and his other remaining family member, one of his two remaining betas, and with Scott, who is -- and parts of the fandom are extraordinarily content to forget this -- Derek's consistent and reliable ally throughout the season. If Derek accepts this advice, it will increase Peter's influence by convincing the alpha that he is more like Peter; that they're the same. They're not.
But, in the unending labor of villain defense, the true context of this scene is purposefully discarded in order to paint Scott as the true danger because of a "black and white world" he doesn't actually live in. Scott's refusal to kill victims or allow innocent people to be killed is oversimplified to a No-Killing Rule he never had. His suspicions about Peter and Derek -- vastly overstated by parts of the fandom -- are transformed from not unreasonable cautions about people who tried to murder him and his friends and lied to him repeatedly about it but into moral rigidity that causes him to judge others unfairly. One BNF has argued that Scott sorts people into Villain and Victim as a function of his black-and-white morality and can't comprehend that people can be both, even as Scott canonically argues that there is hope for Peter, comes to Peter's and Derek's aid, and speaks not one word of criticism to the sheriff.
The whole enterprise is illegitimate because there are plenty of scenes where Scott acknowledges that his attempts to save innocents might end up in other people dying. In Party Guessed (2x09), Visionary (3x08), Lunar Ellipse (3x12), and The Beast of Beacon Hills (5x19), Scott acknowledges that they might have to kill. The key of course is the word reluctant; the truth is that Scott's morality isn't so inflexible that he can't conceive of killing, but it is strong enough that he's never going to make it his first choice. Yet he doesn't cast Peter or Derek into the outer dark for their eagerness to kill. He works with both of them, especially Derek. Several times he does go to Peter for help and advice. He's so non-judgmental of Peter the serial killer that Stiles, his best friend, scolds him twice about it. And when that very same Stiles accidentally kills someone in self-defense and in a panic hides the fact, Scott is shaken, but he doesn't end his friendship with Stiles or even make a moral judgement -- he doesn't throw Stiles out of the pack or call him a monster, no matter what deranged anti anons might think -- a disappointed Scott tells Stiles to go talk to his Dad, the sheriff, which I think is an appropriate response when your friend accidentally kills someone.
But that's where the true black-and-white thinking comes in for the fandom. Scott believes that killing, however necessary or unplanned, is a bad thing, though he clearly doesn't believe that the person who kills is unsalvageable or even unworthy of his love or affection. But parts of the fandom do not share this ability with Scott. In a strange twist, in order to 'stan' a character, they must treat the character as justified no matter what they choose to do, so a villain's crimes -- in Peter's case manipulation, treachery, and serial murder -- must be justified, and any who oppose it in the slightest must be wrong at their core. No matter how much they protest otherwise, they can't acknowledge that the heroic protagonist should be able to react to what a villain does. Thus the very act of a heroic protagonist rejecting the crimes that anyone in their right mind would reject becomes the actual crime.
So suddenly, the heroic protagonist becomes their enemy. If the heroic protagonist has made mistakes as well, they're a hypocrite for even suggesting that the villain's crimes are actual crimes. Stans of a villain draw a bright line around their favorite. Anything within that line is justified, and anything outside of that line is hypocrisy or moral vacuity. This is a black-and-white dichotomy.

okay. okay okay. so i just finished s1 of shadow and bone and started s2 (tho so far im only one episode in). and what can i say except im really into it? and also i now have a lot of feelings.
first of all i appreciate alina and mal being young and also naturally a bit naive but also not stupid? when they accused each other of not sending or reading the letters and then just, you know, talked and hugged it out instead of drawing out the drama? really neat. i love it. love seeing some healthy understanding. babies. and can i just say how graciously mal accepted the fact that alina was very obviously isolated and manipulated and didn’t blame her for it one bit? yeah. that hit me in the feels when i did not expect it bc frankly i mostly started watching it after seeing some unhinged kaz gifs.
and, uhhh. kaz. ouch and also wow. he’s now my son who has 72 mental illnesses and is banned from most public spaces. my man has committed murder fraud burglary and probably arson and looks like he hasn’t had a minute of good sleep in about at least seven years give or take a few months. he’s a badass he’s canonically disabled he’s a criminal he’s a poor little meow meow he’s a bastard he’s a traumatized kid in a neat little hat. love him. he needs all the hugs and can’t get one.
and can i just say that inej is so goddamn pretty? bc she is. knife wife. not to take away from her character and her own trauma. she’s badass before everything else. her killing the inferni that was about to fry kaz? breathtaking beautiful amazing. and yeah i can’t shut up about kaz but showing on screen that the cane is not just for show and cool points but a legitimate walking aid for him that he experiences chronic pain without is so. good. chef’s kiss. the way their relationship progresses hnnnngg. i believe in you. i’m not leaving you. good god. please let them just hold hands.
also. nina and matthias broke my heart. crying screaming throwing up. why couldn’t they get a happy ending. it was either court marshal for matthias or for nina and hell they looked so fucking happy and content eating waffles that for a moment i forgot their countries were actively at war. why. i choose to believe that in my head they’re together and free. nina’s banter with matthias was super sweet and you can see the moment it changes from hostile and acerbic to genuinely playful and this is tearing my heart out all over again.
also genya totally deserved better.

While we are having bisexual class consciousness, here’s a rant:
What the fuck is this shit of pretending bisexuals are completely accepted by society and fully oppress gay people along with straight people and biphobia doesn’t exist etc etc because you can be “straight passing”. Meanwhile every single gay person is a poor little meow meow whose life is the polar opposite of a bi person and is personally victimised by our slutty antics.
Cause obviously a bi woman in a lesbian relationship is insanely privileged compared to her lesbian girlfriend, of course. It’s not like the material way they are viewed and treated by society is EXACTLY THE SAME. It’s not like a single gender conforming bi person and a single gender conforming gay person have exactly the same amount of “straight-passing privilege”. It’s not like bi women are victimised by their male AND female partners BECAUSE they are bisexual, and have the highest rate of intimate partner violence as a result.
And I’m not ignoring the fact that bi women can be in a straight relationship and live a life being treated as functionally heterosexual! I’m aware of that! And I have to mention this cause if I don’t put millions of disclaimers on a rant like this the horde will come for me. But the thing is, some bi women can’t have that! It’s not always a choice. I’m bi, technically. I could never be with a man though. I heavily prefer women. Not to mention the fact you can’t actually usually control who you fall in love with, life isn’t a dating app with structured swiping and messaging.
Like literally nobody is saying that bi women have it worse from society than lesbians or whatever, but any time you bring up legitimate problems that bi people have somebody has to shoehorn in that gay people have it worse and you’re a privileged oppressor and you should shut the fuck up. There’s literally no outlet for us to talk about our problems even amongst ourselves cause somebody who thinks they are the only true victim of society has to come along and tell us they have it so much worse.
hmm i partially agree, like i don't understand this "straight passing" argument when it's *only* applied to bisexuals. like you said there are also gay people who "pass" as straight just like any closeted bi person, but ultimately they still navigate the world as homosexuals and bi people navigate the world as bisexuals. and that's a disadvantage either way. but by that logic, i can't agree that we're viewed the exact same... you're describing a situation where a bi woman would be facing homophobia bc she's assumed to be a lesbian, and that's definitely where we have the most overlap in our experiences, but the internal effect isn't necessarily the same imo so we internalize things differently based on our sexualities
i'm the same way though, i'm a febfem bc i could never happily be with a man, i'm more or less penis-repulsed. being bi doesn't mean you're available to men. i know the majority of bi people end up with the other sex, but that isn't the case for everyone lol and even if you're with the other sex that doesn't make you immune to biphobia. the statistics are there.
i do think there are some bisexuals who wanna go on abt this "monosexual privilege" shit but in radfem spaces? there's no reason why bi women talking abt legitimate concerns should be met with "other women have it worse so shut up," like that's literally a men's rights activist talking point to shut down feminists and i yet see radfems saying it unironically to bi/straight women which is wild to me

Anon said "And who's fault is it that you are awake for 35h+ not having a good time? You, exactly. That's why it's not useful to do drugs while you are in fucking Japan. You are putting the person you are staying with in danger for doing drugs and scare them with not sleeping. Congrats. Sure when you are in Denmark you can do wtf you want but going into a foreign country and doing drugs? That wasn't the wisest idea 🤷🏻‍♀️"
Ok but like... Will anon kindly know their fucking place and take a seat? I know this kind of thing doesn't really deserve an answer, but it pissed me off, and I deal with that by being argumentive :P
Point number 1: whose "fault" is it that Kat is awake on drugs, feeling poorly, for 35+ h? Well, as anon points out, Kat certainly has some responsibility in this situation. But in any given situation, the "fault" can be placed anywhere, depending on who you feel like attacking.
Unless you imagine Kat is literally stealing meds from me without my knowledge, does this situation not also imply "fault" on my side? Have I not knowingly taken on the responsibility of caring for Kat, drug use and all? Please. Don't reduce me to some poor little meow meow being taken advantage of and "put in danger" by the big bad Kat.
What is actually interesting here is anon's need to assign blame in the first place, and the fact that they present this perceived blame as "gotcha", when in fact they are literally repeating what Kat has already said herself.
Then, it would seem to me, that their primary investment is in hurting Kat.
If they truly are SO worried for the well-being of my brother and I, you'd expect them to sense that Kat is already feeling poorly and some amount of guilt/shame-fuelled anxiety. They would be aware that trying to make that worse, will only make the situation harder on everyone. But fact is, they don't care. About Kat, or me, or my brother.
They see an opening, and they immediately punch at it.
Anon, people like you are the reason people don't get help for legitimate problems, people like you actively make life harder for already-suffering people, people like you create a guarded defensiveness in anyone, you are the polar opposite of a compassionate reminder.
Do you think shame and guilt are constructive emotions? Do you think they are good for encouraging healthy behavior? If you do, consider go do some research...
Point number 2: ok no one is in danger, chill out. I think anon is just wildin', but just in case someone out there is legitimately worried, I'm gonna spell this part out. OBVIOUSLY Kat is not doing anything in a foreign country that could get her into serious legal trouble. If nothing else, I wouldn't let her, but she also wouldn't risk that. Misuse of prescription medication is problematic, but it's not dangerous in a legal sense, the way it would be, if we started acquiring street drugs in a country known for cracking down hard on illegal drugs.
Maybe anon is suggesting, rather, that Kat will become "dangerous" from overdoing drugs. I can assure anon that if either Kat or I thought she could become "dangerous" -and by "dangerous" I mostly mean "psychotic" and "dangerous to herself", then she would not have access to these drugs atm.
3: "scare them with not sleeping" .... Ok now you're just reaching. It might have been recently Halloween, but someone struggling to sleep, and subsequently needing a bit of help taking care of herself physically/mentally is not exactly a jumpscare ^^"
4: people who say "congrats" ironically are the literal worst. Go roll in a pile of pebble.
-Quinn
Some words directly from Quinn - the actual real life person involved in this unfortunate affair. So maybe you can all stop putting words in his mouth now? I mean considering that none of y'all actually know enough details about the situation to do anything but make antagonistic accusations

mk for the ask! (new game included if u want but spoiler free as possible pls)
I haven't played through or seen the MK1 story yet so none of my answers will be based on that. Anyway thank you!
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): Kitana and Sub-Zero, specifically Kuai Liang. I remember seeing Kitana for the first time when I was young and just finding her design, weapons and playstyle so beautiful and then falling in love with her lore and personality and idk how anyone could not love her she's perfect. And as for Kuai Liang, I mean after the spine rip fatality rewired my brain and made me fall in love with the franchise it was hard not to love Sub-Zero in general, but Kuai has such a kind personality and interesting journey and I just love him
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): Honestly don't know if I have one for MK. Wait yes I do Raiden and Cyrax (I like cyborgs/robots)
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): I'm gonna say Jade because while she isn't unpopular I feel like she never really gets the attention or respect she deserves from either the fandom or NRS. And part of that is just the unfortunate reality of caring about a female character, but Jade in particular feels like she's always treated like an accessory to other characters and I'm tired of it
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): SAREENA MY BELOVED. Hope she gets to do things some day but at this point I don't have much hope
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Raiden. He legitimately unironically did nothing wrong and I will be a Raiden apologist forever I am on this hill to KILL
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Havik because I know he can handle it. This is foreplay for us
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): Hmm there's characters I don't like but idk if I feel strongly enough to eeby deeby them or if there are I can't think of them rn. Maybe Cetrion or Erron idk. Or Kronika
